This study, conceptually replicating the study by Funder and Harris (1986), examined the difference between African Americans and white Americans on measures of social acuity. Social acuity, as defined in this context, is the ability and inclination to perceive the psychological state of others and guide one's behavior in accordance with that perception.

Austen, Benjamin. "Raceball : African Americans and myths of America in baseball literature". Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/18419.

Texto completo da fonte
Resumo:
This paper will examine moments in literature where the narratives of baseball as American myth and those involving African Americans converge, moments where authors confront (either consciously or not) the implications of both narratives within the same shared space. It is at these moments of convergence that the mythic language surrounding the game and its interaction with African Americans are thrown into dramatic relief. A myth, says Roland Barthes in his Mythologies, is a kind of "metalanguage," a narrative which refers to and talks about another narrative; it is at least twice removed from any referent which exists in reality. "What is invested in the concept," writes Barthes, "is less reality than a certain knowledge of reality." Examining this space will reveal how myths operate and continue to affect an understanding of personal and national identities, especially since this space involves the intersection of the emblematic discourse of baseball with a black presence that appears to question the very tenets of established national memory.

This thesis will highlight the role of the colour-line in the construction of U.S. foreign policy, in addition to providing insight into African-Americans' interests in foreign affairs between 1900 and 1945. Significantly, it examines the formation, maintenance and construction of an African-American Foreign Affairs Community (AAFAC). The thesis will determine the influence of AAFAC and establish the connections that existed between it and the dominant foreign policy establishment during the aforementioned period.

Texto completo da fonte
Resumo:
The effects of nonadherence to prescribed blood pressure medication adversely impacts African Americans (AA) in comparison to their European American counterparts. The associated health consequences of uncontrolled hypertension include heart failure, stroke, and renal dysfunction. And the treatment of the complications negatively impacts quality of life and contributes to increased health care costs. To address the problem at 1 clinic, a quality improvement (QI) project was developed by the clinic nursing staff, but the project had never been evaluated. The project included blood pressure measurements assessed among AA patients before and after implementation of a 4-item Morisky Medication-Taking Adherence Scale (MMAS) and education by the nurses. The purpose of this project was to evaluate whether the use of the MMAS and education improved blood pressure control in the AA hypertensive patients. This QI evaluation project was guided by Johnson's medication adherence model and the Kolkaba comfort theory. Deidentified results of 3 months of patient blood pressures taken before and 3 months after the QI project was implemented were obtained from the site for statistical analysis. A paired sample t test was used to determine if a difference in blood pressure existed between the 2 groups, before and after implementation (n = 33) of the teaching and the MMAS. Results indicated a statistically significant (p < .05) decrease in blood pressures after implementation of the QI project. The findings of this project may positively influence social change by improving adherence to blood pressure medication and thereby improving healthcare outcomes for AA patients.

Hull, Susan Hall. "The fighting spirit of hip hop : an alternative ghetto experience". Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1988. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/28073.

Texto completo da fonte
Resumo:
This study investigates the expressive youth movement hip hop, a predominately black male subculture defined through participation in the competitive activities of graffiti writing, rapping and breakdancing. The general objective is to determine what is being communicated through these expressive forms, to whom, how, and finally to suggest why it is being communicated. The extent to which the encoded messages are consistent with reports of the subculture's goals is then discussed. It is asserted that hip hop operates as an alternative identity management and problem-solving mechanism within the black American ghetto. Drawing on traditional aspects of black cultural identity and expressiveness, hip hop creates a distinct way of life, reflecting a constructive and optimistic philosophy, to challenge the existing roles of the street hustler and gang member. Developed in the inner city boroughs of New York City in the late 1960's and early 1970's, hip hop functioned as a non-violent means of projecting a self-image and of measuring self-worth. It continues to be used to confront fundamental issues in a fight to overcome the restrictions of ghetto living, providing an expression of both an aesthetic and a cultural style based on the pursuit of excellence. The focus of the study is a form and content analysis of a selection of recorded raps, which parallels an interpretation of the messages conveyed in the musical form with assertions made by insiders regarding the functioning of hip hop. The thesis explores the hip hop male persona and worldview, his social relations and his role in the community, as they are articulated in the raps. The results of this analysis are then applied to a discussion of hip hop graffiti and breakdancing symbolism. The study concludes that the three expressive forms are communicating the cultural agenda of its members as well as providing the means through which to achieve their goals. It is contended that within hip hop, members empower themselves through aggressive self-glorifying imagery and role-playing, and that they apply this sense of greatness to motivating their community, outlining a strategy for coping with their existence by re-energizing it and transforming it into a positive experience.

Velox, Andrea Jean. "Use of the Rorschach as a personality assessment tool with African American students". Diss., Texas A&M University, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/2265.

Texto completo da fonte
Resumo:
African American children comprise 16.5 percent of all public school enrollments, but account for 27 percent of all students in Seriously Emotionally Disturbed (SED) classes (U. S. Dept of Education, 2001; U. S. Department of Education Ofice of Civil Rights, 1997). Being in such a position sets these children in the position of being assessed more often for placement and diagnostic purposes. Test instruments often use norms that either have not been standardized with African American children, or the cultural impact of African American socialization has not been validated with these children. In this investigation, the Rorschach was administered to 40 African American students of low-and middle-socioeconomic status. Comparisons were made between the Rorschach??s established norms for 9- and 11-year-olds and the study group of 40 African American male and female, 9- and 11-year-olds, to investigate any trends for the study group. In addition, the relative impact of acculturation on the Rorschach scores of this study??s participants was examined. Results revealed significant differences from the norm group on six of the 15 variables for the 11-year-olds in the study group, although not all significance was in the same direction, nor in the direction expected by the investigator. F+, and m were found in higher amounts for the study sample; CF, Pairs, Zf, and T were all found in significantly lower amounts for the study group. Significance on six (CF, Pairs, R-total, Zf, AG, and T) of the Rorschach variables investigated was found for the 9-year-old study group. There was no significance found due to the impact of acculturation for the entire study group. It may be that the 9-year-olds have a less sophisticated or negative "worldview" than their 11-year-old study group counterparts, or that when they are younger African American children perceive or process images more similar to their mainstream peers. Implications for further research and practice were discussed.
