This article offers suggestions for strengthening school-based grief support following an adolescent’s death. Such interventions must be considered within the context of: (a) development during adolescence; (b) the role of peers in adolescent development; and (c) the fact that an adolescent peer’s death is a non-normative life crisis in developed countries. Review of those three topics leads to an overview of death during adolescence; an exploration of adolescent bereavement, grief, and mourning; consideration of disenfranchised grief in relation to an adolescent peer’s death; and an integration of this foundational knowledge in supporting bereaved adolescents within a school setting.

The aim of this paper is to establish which parenting style is associated with optimum outcomes among adolescents of Spanish families considering adolescents with low vs. high self-efficacy. Although classical studies identify the authoritative parenting style (based on warmth and strictness) as the best parental strategy, emerging research seriously questions the benefits of parental strictness. Additionally, the impact of parenting on the adolescent’s psychosocial competence has been studied for years, but less is known about whether it might vary depending on individual characteristics of the adolescent (e.g., self-efficacy). Participants were 1029 Spanish adolescents, 453 males (44%), aged 12-17 years. Families were classified in one of the parenting styles groups (authoritative, authoritarian, indulgent, or neglectful), and adolescents were grouped by low vs. high self-efficacy. Adolescent psychosocial competence was examined through emotional and academic self-concept, psychological maladjustment (hostility/aggression, negative self-esteem, emotional responsivity, instability, and negative view of the world), and academic performance (grade point average and number of failing grades). Main and interaction effects of parenting style and adolescent self-efficacy were tested. Main effect results indicated that adolescents with low self-efficacy were always associated with the worst psychosocial competence. Consistently, the main effect findings indicated that adolescents from indulgent and authoritative families were associated with better results than those from neglectful and authoritarian families. However, the indulgent parenting style yielded the best results. The impact of parenting might not be the same for adolescents in all cultural contexts. Contrary to findings from classical studies, parental strictness seems to be unnecessary or even detrimental for adolescents with low and high self-efficacy.

Inadaquate parental monitoring is widely recognized as a risk factor for the development of child and adolescent conduct problems, including early premarital sexual behavior. Previous studies examining parental monitoring have largely effect to adolescents premarital sexual behavior. Parental monitoring is the most important and effective factor to prevent early adolescents sexual activity. This paper examines the role of perceived parental monitoring in adolescent’s premarital sexual behavior (study on Adolescent’s Junior High School in Pontianak). A cross-sectional study and proportionated random sampling was conducted among 402 adolescents of junior high school at six subdistricts in Pontianak. SEM analyses was conducted using SMART-PLS. Result of path analysis revealed that parental knowledge (r = 0.389) and parental-adolescence relationship (r = 0.334) had a strong influence on parental monitoring. Then, parental monitoring had a significant indirect relationship with adolescent premarital sexual behavior through attitudes about premarital sexual (path coefficient = 0.063), and attitudes about premarital sexual and intention to sexual behaviour (path coefficient = 0.03). Parental monitoring can act as protective factor in early adolescent premarital sexual behavior. Therefore, risk reduction interventions with adolescents should include their parents to learn about monitoring skill and develop skill that will allow them to buffer negative influences.

Adolescents contraceptive need to be the top most priority in the national policy to prevent the adolescent pregnancies and it’s adverse consequences. All the countries of the world should have their own national strategy liaison with global consensus regarding the Adolescent contraceptives. Global challenge is to tackle the adolescents Pregnancy. Contraceptives use is the answer. So adolescents should be the centrals to everything we want to achieve, and to the overall success of the 2030 SDG Agenda. Without Contraceptive “SDG achievement” is not possible. About 21 million 15-19 year old girls in developing countries become pregnant every year. Half of these pregnancies (49%) are unintended. If we are successful to implement contraceptives among the youngsters, adolescent’s pregnancy complications can be eliminated. But again this needs strong political motivation and hard work of health care providers. Health care team should design and deliver a Confidential, personalized, adolescent’s friendly service taking into account adolescent's psychosocial & sexual needs. Almost all methods of contraceptives are suitable for adolescents except few. After taking a comprehensive medical history & assessing risk factors counselling should be done for risks & benefits. Good & sensible communication with women, their husband or partner is important. It remains a critical aspect in empowering adolescents to make informed choices and only then adolescents will use contraceptives wholeheartedly.

Adolescence is a transitional period between childhood and adulthood. Nowadays, adolescents in Lebanon are growing during a time of unprecedented health crises and political instability. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and correlates of malnutrition, dietary diversity in adolescents’ households, and adolescents’ self-reported food insecurity in Lebanon. A national representative sample of 450 parent–adolescent dyads (parents: mean age ± standard deviation (SD) = 46.0 ± 7.0, mothers: 59.0%; adolescents: mean age ± SD = 15.0 ± 3.0, girls: 54.6%) were interviewed. Anthropometric and blood hemoglobin measurements were performed for adolescents. The Food Consumption Score, the Arab Family Food Security Scale and the Adolescent-Level Food-Security Scale were used. The overall prevalence of adolescent stunting, thinness, overweight, obesity and anemia was 6.7%, 4.7%, 19.3%, 12.9% and 16.7%, respectively. Almost 40.4% and 68% of adolescent’s households consumed undiversified diets and were food insecure, respectively. Food insecurity (FI) affected 54.0% of adolescents. Adolescents attending schools (vs. university) were eight times more likely to be stunted (p = 0.04). Boys had a 4.3 times higher thinness risk (p = 0.005) compared to girls. Households reporting an income decline since the start of the Lebanese economic crisis were three times more likely to have a thin adolescent (p = 0.01). Parental overweight/obesity (p = 0.002) and lower education level (p = 0.04) nearly doubled the risk of adolescent overweight or obesity. At a time when escalating crises in Lebanon are shifting diets for the youngest generations, the development of adolescent-responsive nutritional policies becomes a must.

Palavras-chave: Saúde do Adolescente. Enfermagem. Educação. Sexualidade. Reprodução. Abstract In recent decades, the highs fees of adolescence pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STI) cases became the main subjects of important debates in many countries. According to SINASC (Live Birth Information System), in Brazil, the number of children born from adolescent mothers represents 18% of the 3 million live births in 2015. Moreover, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) (2016), more than 1 million new cases of STI arise among people aged by 15 to 49 years old. These data highlight the flaws in the application of an important implement for adolescent’s prevention and health promotion: health education. This study aims to board the implications of health education in the adolescent’s sensitizing regarding sexual and reproductive health. A narrative review was accomplished through articles found in the SciELO (Scientific Electronic Library Online) database and periodicals, in addition to Ministry of Health Primary Care notebooks. Thirty articles, which did not evade the theme, in Portuguese language, and had the publication dates from 2009 to 2018, were analyzed. It is noted that there's still a long journey so that sexual and reproductive education are effective and integral in the adolescence process. Problems such as humanization and lack of acceptance, in addition to stereotype maintenance and non-holistic view of the adolescents represent s some of the obstacles to be faced in this scenario. Nursing professionals have the conditions and the duty to contribute for the improvement of Brazilians adolescents’ health situation. Keywords: Adolescent's Health. Nursing. Education. Sexuality. Adolescent depression is highly prevalent, associated with negative effects and likely to recur, this provides a cogent argument for finding sustainable, cost-effective, developmentally appropriate approaches to preventing depression. Although there is good evidence to support efficacy, there is no evidence of the effectiveness of programs preventing adolescent depression. Thus the primary aim of this thesis is to evaluate the effectiveness of a universal, school-based, adolescent depression prevention program when implemented by teachers and local mental health professionals. Participants were 1003 secondary school students drawn from three pairs of matched Year 9 cohorts. The three pairs were assigned to either: (a) Resourceful Adolescent Program (RAP), an 11-session school-based resilience program delivered as part of the school curriculum (n = 522) or (b) a comparison condition (n = 481). All students completed measures of depressive symptoms and hopelessness at pre-intervention, post-intervention and 6-month follow-up. The intervention group completed quantitative and qualitative evaluations of perceived program benefit. Small program effects on depressive symptoms for the RAP group were evident for the whole group at post-intervention (ES = 0.30) and for girls only at follow-up (ES = 0.35). However, both boys' and girls' self-reports indicated very positive overall benefits from the RAP intervention. Teachers were not less effective as group leaders than mental health professionals in terms of outcomes on depression measures, perceived program benefits or acceptability to students. Public health implications of this population-based approach are discussed in the light of small effects, high recruitment rates and potential use of sustainable school resources.

This study investigated the quality and quantity of sexual communication between teens and parents in relation to the teens' sexual intentions. Perceptions about communication were examined of parents and adolescents of both genders separately. Both same- and cross-gender effects of parental communication on adolescent sexual intentions were explored. Approximately 290 families (target teen and parent) were measured in pre- and posttests. Parents perceived higher quality communication with teens than teens did, but not necessarily more frequent sexual communication. As teens' perceptions of quality of communication with mother and father went up, teens' sexual intentions went down. The higher sons' intention toward early sexual involvement, the more often sons perceived that their parents talked with them about sexual issues. Daughters who perceived more sexual communication with parents at Time 1 reported higher sexual intentions at Time 2. Fathers perceived that as quality and frequency of communication with daughter went up, the daughter's sexual intentions also went up. Fathers perceived that as frequency of communication with all teens went up, the teen's sexual intentions also went up. Mothers perceived that the higher the quality of communication with sons at Time 1, the higher the sexual intentions among sons at Time 2. The more often mothers perceived that their daughters talked with them about sexual issues at Time 1, the higher the daughters' intention toward early sexual involvement at Time 2. The more the discrepancy between teens and fathers and mothers about c communication quality, the more the adolescents' intention toward early sexual involvement.

Abstract: In modern society, the media play a central role in different sectors, since they appear as a fundamental tool for the exercise of citizenship and the dissemination of knowledge - a situation that is also verified in the fields of alimentation and nutrition . The topic of alimentation and nutrition is increasingly noticeable in various media: this presence has been valued for its potential to contribute to the promotion of healthy nutrition and health in general; however, it has also been questioned as to its credibility and adequacy which are often compromised by market influences (determined by the esthetic industry, for instance). Given these issues, this dissertation sought to analyze the quality of the content related to the topic of alimentation and nutrition in two online teen magazines - Todateen and Capricho. A qualitative research was performed using the Content Analysis method in combination with theoretical and conceptual frameworks of the Cultural Studies. The corpus for analysis consisted of 111 texts (68 texts of the online magazine Capricho and 43 texts of the online magazine Todateen). The corpus was selected by searching in the websites of the magazines Capricho and Todateen using keywords related to the topics of alimentation and nutrition, and we selected the time frame of one year (year 2012). The main results and analysis of the texts in the corpus were: celebrities were always the preferred sources of information; the main role of the sources was to report personal experiences; the approach was predominantly factual; the use of linguistic terms was inadequate and presented a loss of meaning; the occurrence of information promoting healthy nutrition practices was reduced; issues of public interest hardly entered on the agenda; the framework was characterized by the prevalence of a biological dimension for alimentation and nutrition with a focus on esthetics, and the concepts of alimentation and nutrition were more based on the idea of a restrictive diet than on healthy eating. These results allow us to affirm that the contents of the magazines analyzed do not present satisfactory quality and potential to contribute to alimentation and nutrition safety of adolescents

Introduction: High amounts of fat, cholesterol, refined sugar, and low amounts of fat acid and fibers present in the diets of adolescents is results in high rates of obesity, chronic non-communicable diseases, and death in adults. Objective: Evaluate qualitatively and quantitatively the daily eating habits of adolescent males and females from a São Paulo city state school. Methods: Students between the ages of 14 years and 18 years 11 months old in four different times in a six month period were evaluated. The students logged their food intake over a 24 hour period and the data was processed by the Virtual Nutri software. The statistical analysis (Kolmogorov-Smirnow, T Student test for two repeated samples, Wilcoxon Signed Tank Test, and McNemar) was made by SPSS 11.0. Results: For every day of the test, fat accounted for more than 30% of the caloric intake. The fiber intake showed a tendency to improve on week days when compared with weekends, as did the intake of unsaturated fats. The food most frequently consumed was rice. Snacks were consumed mostly on the holiday, and during holidays the students frequently skipped breakfast. Conclusions: This study of the eating habits of adolescents can help shape the public policies of health, nutrition, and diet for specific groups and interventions.

Intuitive eating is defined as an adaptive eating process that involves focusing on internal hunger and satiety to guide eating behavior, using those physiological cues rather than emotions to determine when to eat, and choosing what to eat based upon preference and not external rules and expectations. The purpose of this study was to examine intuitive eating within the context of contemporary sociocultural models of eating in 701 early adolescent boys and 769 early adolescent girls. Support was found for the model and suggested that pressures to lose weight or gain muscle, restrictive messages about food from caregivers, and internalization of the thin ideal were related to the early adolescents’ intuitive eating behaviors, suggesting that many of the sociocultural variables that have been found to impact disordered eating are salient for understanding healthy eating behaviors. However, the relations among many of the variables, as well as the model’s ability to explain intuitive eating overall, were stronger in girls than in boys. These findings can be used to help parents and schools begin to teach early adolescents about intuitive eating and how they can resist external pressures that may negatively influence their eating behaviors.

Adulthood, once defined as a goal, today, has increasingly blurred outlines. While many speak of "adultescenza" (adult-adolescent) to describe the situation of those who interpret their adulthood in adolescent terms, today, we have, in one way, less certainty, in another way, more possibilities. For example, social sciences assign adolescents the task of choosing, where reality confirms that the choices taken in adolescence are not "for life," but circumstantial. Adolescents, rather, discover; adults rediscover. Thus, in adulthood, a detachment from the family of origin can take place which in adolescence was thought inconceivable: freedom, autonomy and responsibility can finally be considered adult goals, because the family of origin sometimes still has to-be-thought-of.

Adolescence is a developmental period characterized by a series of remarkable transformations and transitions in social roles. In this chapter, some of the critical concepts for threat assessment and management raised when the person of concern is an adolescent are explored. First, the developmental changes in neurological, cognitive, and psychosocial maturity that occur during this period in the life span are discussed. Consequences arising from deviant peer influences are a concern for any threat situation, but the importance of peers among adolescents intensifies during this developmental period and can be explained in part by neurological changes. Second, the role of the adolescent’s internal world in assessing and managing concerns about targeted violence is examined, including violent ideation and fantasy and psychopathology. The final section presents a discussion of key concepts relevant to managing concerns about risk for targeted violence by adolescents that are consistent with developmentally appropriate and scientifically informed principles.

Abstract Adolescents, because of their particular developmental concerns and vulnerabilities, present doctors with special problems in communication. Because of the proximity of their own adolescence, medical students can tune in to what an adolescent is saying much more readily than an older doctor. But this close identification with adolescents’ attitudes and concerns can make it much more difficult for the student to form an objective, detached assessment of the extent and nature of problems within families. By and large, they are a healthy group; medical contact is more likely to arise as a result of psycho-social problems than from physical illness. Apart from the regular medical consultations associated with the treatment of chronic disorders, such as juvenile diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, sensory impairment, and so on, the physical conditions in adolescents for which medical advice is most frequently sought are glandular fever, traumatic injury, and pregnancy. However, the last two are often associated with psycho-social problems, and these also complicate, or contribute significantly to, the functional impairment of adolescents with chronic disability.

Adolescence is a period in which human organism develop rapidly physically and mentally. It is also the age of great searches and dreams, of affirmation and changes. Every adolescent achieves his own identity, learns to make decision and find his professional vocation. This period of development is focused on the search for one’s own values, can be a continuous source of stress, dissatisfaction, many doubts, disappointments and dissolutions. Stress is common phenomenon for different periods of development, but during adolescence because of multiple and different changes in adolescents’ life, stress is experienced and felt more intensely than in order periods of human development. Changes in social, economic and educational spheres conditionate a state of stress at modern adolescents demanding all their resources. Sources of stress for adolescents can be body changes, overloading at school, fear of evaluation, involvement in many activities, high expectations, demands and frustration in different school circumstances, negative thoughts and emotions about themselves, unsafe environment, family problems and difficulties. A high level of stress can generate physical disease, anxiety, different maladaptive behaviours such as: aggression, alcohol or drug consumption, isolation, etc.

With the popularity and spread of social media, more and more social software is helping to bring people closer to each other [1]. It is increasingly easy for adolescents to get other people's updates from social media, including celebrities, internet celebrities and peers [2]. Also adolescence is a time when the brain undergoes many structural and functional changes, so it is likely that the part of the social brain responsible for regulating imitation is still maturing throughout adolescence, which may lead to more pronounced imitative behaviour [3]. In addition, adolescents gain popularity, status and attractiveness through imitation of their idols or among their peers [4]. Therefore, making good use of the prevalent behaviours that social media has created in society has the potential to provide better behavioural interventions for the adolescent population [5], helping to shape better behavioural habits in adolescents, improving the current trend of younger disease and potentially reducing the likelihood of preventable health problems. The aim of this study was to analyse how popular behavioural mimicry among adolescents can be used to promote the activation of their health behaviours. We asked two questions: 1. the extent to which imitation behaviours activate adolescents' health behaviours; 2. measuring the impact of knowledge, skills and beliefs involved in the activation of behavioural imitation on adolescents' health maintenance and disease prevention.A questionnaire was used to enumerate the population groups that have the greatest influence on adolescents as the test sample in this study. 100 participants took part in the questionnaire, including 50 participants from mainland China and 50 participants from Hong Kong, whose mean age was 16 ± 3 years. After administering the questionnaire, 50 of these participants, who were randomly and equally divided into 10 groups of 5 participants each, were surveyed using the Activation Inventory (PAM) to measure the current level of knowledge, skills and beliefs involved in the activation of the adolescent population to maintain health and prevent disease, and then measured again using the PAM 30 and 60 days after the adolescents were exposed to the imitated subjects. The adolescent group itself was not highly aware of healthy behaviours and the effectiveness of positive health behaviour imitation in changing health behaviours and outcomes was somewhat proven when they were exposed to positive health behaviours of imitators for 30 days. However, 60 days after participants were exposed to imitations of healthy behaviours, although the imitations were still effective in maintaining healthy behaviours, the 60-day activation of healthy behaviours produced some decline compared to the first 30 days of outcomes. Therefore, in the future, more research should be conducted on the preferences and needs of adolescent groups to identify the social factors and groups that best trigger imitation among adolescents, and to promote positive health behaviours among adolescents by developing mobile applications that are more in line with adolescents' expectations to trigger trends, create widespread social discussion and be present in their daily conversations.References1.Moira Burke and Robert E. ABSTRACT Background: Menarche (first menstrual period) is a sign of physical maturity in adolescent girls, which has an impact in the future, both from a psychological and socio-cultural perspective on adolescents. Menarche provides different responses and emotions to adolescent; this is due to differences in preparation for dealing with menarche. Scoping review aims to overview the menarche acceptance among adolescent. Subjects and Method: This was a scoping review study using the Arksey & O’Malley framework with 5 stages, including: identifying scoping review questions, identifying relevant articles using databased including PubMed, ScienceDirect, and EBSCO. This study using gray literature, selecting relevant articles using inclusion and exclusion criteria, mapping data charting and compiling, summarizing and producing a review report. Results: There were 6 articles selected using the Hawker assessment checklist tools. Articles obtained were using qualitative methods. The article selected in this study were based on the methodology, year of publication, and the participants used in the article. Two major themes that emerged as a result of the scoping review were knowledge and attitude. Conclusion: The acceptance of menarche among adolescents will differ depending on the information and support environment for adolescents. The acceptance of menarche in adolescents was still need an attention from health workers, families, and teachers. The provision of pre-menarche health education before adolescent reach menarche is important. So that adolescents are better prepared to gain good experiences and perceptions. "The article’s main purpose is to present the value structure of adolescents. The period of adolescence is significantly important in an adolescent´s life in terms of the formation of the value structure. The structure of values firmly directs adolescents to choose their lifestyle and shows the direction of personality motivation. The preference for specific values is influenced not only by the adolescent´s personality, but also by his interests, needs, attitudes, and various events in his life. The research sample consisted of Slovak adolescents (N=335, girls N=205, boys N=130). The average age was 16.3 years. Our interest was focused on gender differences in the structure of values, measured using the Portrait Value Questionnaire (PVQ, Schwartz, 2003). The results showed a difference in preferred value structures (statistically significant) between girls and boys. Girls scored higher in the values of self-direction, universalism, openness to change, and self-transcendence."

This article raises and discusses the main issues related to the technologies of working in conflict situations in the adolescent environment. Speaking about the conflict in adolescence, it is worth noting that scientists agree that it is communication with peers that is most significant for a teenager and largely determines all other aspects of his behavior and activity, personal development. Consequently, disagreements in the peer group, the struggle for status leads to a conflict of the parties. In this regard, we decided to develop technologies of psychological and pedagogical influence in working with conflict adolescents. We have developed a model of consistent work of actions, which will be aimed at preventing conflicts in the adolescent environment, as well as the formation of their stress resistance, self-control and self-control.

"Background: An important predictor of adolescents’ developmental outcomes is a model of family education, described in terms of parental behaviors. Various parental behaviors were strongly associated with increasing risk of deviant behaviors at school. Methods: The study was conducted on 566 adolescents, comprising 280 males (49.5%) and 286 females (50.5%), of grade 11th and 12th, of age rang 16-17 years from different government colleges in Vietnam. There were 2 self-reported scales to be used: Parental behavior scale; Adolescent deviant behaviors; Data was analyzed by using reliability analysis to examine the psychometric properties of the scales. Results: There was a strong, negative correlation between school deviant behaviors in adolescents and the parental support model (with rfather =-.53, rmother =-.61, p-value <.01); a strong, positive correlation between the school deviant behaviors and the parental psychological control model (with rmother =.45 and rfather =.47, p-value<.01). Conclusions: In family education, positive behaviors used by parents such as supportive, warmth and moderate control would have a positive impact on the adolescent’s behavioral development; conversely, parents’ psychological control would negatively affect and give rise to deviant behaviors among adolescents."

Adolescence is the process of growth and maturation to adulthood, and according to the Statute of the Child and Adolescent (ECA) this period comprises the age group between twelve and eighteen years (ESTATUTO DA CRIANÇA E DO ADOLESCENTE, 1990), however, the Ministry of Health (MS) determines that for the receptions that occur in Primary Health Care (PHC), the age range between ten and nineteen years is considered, which is subdivided between pre-adolescence (10 years to 14 years) and adolescence (15 years to 19 years) (BRASIL, 2018). This phase of human development is a period of biopsychosocial and physiological changes, where the individual seeks to understand the changes of the body in addition to establishing their identity as part of society (BATISTA, 2021).

A fundamental phase in the human development is adolescence. Defining for adolescence are the complex and complicated biological, cognitive and psychosocial modifications. The large changes and evolutions on all the plans influence significantly the emotional sphere of adolescents. The emotional experiences reach a pronounced intensity and instability. Adolescents demonstrates emotional instability and inconstancy, an exacerbation of negative emotions (anxiety and depression). As results of experimental study of negative emotions at adolescents we worriedly, we find that most of the adolescents, more than half of them (59,60% and 8,90%) have a moderate and high level of anxiety. A comparative analysis at the level of adolescents’ batch, depending on the dimension of gender, concerning the anxiety, allows us to declare that the high level of anxiety is more characteristic to girls. For depressive states: more than half of the adolescents (53,10% and 2,10%) experience moderate and high levels of depressive states. The correlation coefficient between anxiety and the depressive states confirms the existence of an interrelationship between anxiety and depressive feelings. Even though there are no gender differences in manifesting the depressive states at adolescents, the girls have an obvious higher frequency for depressive states than boys.

This article deals with the problem of conflicts in adolescence, which in the modern socio-cultural space has acquired unprecedented relevance. Dynamically changing society from day to day, dictates its own rules in the adolescent environment. Differences in views, preferences, thoughts and worldview are acutely perceived within the adolescent group. Due to the age and physiological characteristics that occur at this age, adolescents often do not know how to control their behavior and correctly respond to emerging controversial situations. All this sets the task of teachers and psychologists to help the teenager, to teach him a rational way out of the conflict, as well as to carry out preventive measures, to create programs to reduce the level of negative manifestations.

Historically, major adolescent and reproductive health initiatives have failed to explicitly consider the needs of married adolescents. This paper provides insight into what is being done—or not being done—to support married adolescent girls and boys, how these populations’ needs are being conceptualized, and the extent to which social context is factored into program design. Some early work with adolescent mothers (married and unmarried) is considered. The degree to which selected adolescent programs have been able to reach married girls with their activities is briefly examined. A few basic parameters of potential interventions for married adolescents are presented, including an inventory of current projects, to examine how, when, and at whom efforts typically are directed. Finally, three in-depth examples of recent, ongoing programs for married adolescent girls are presented.

The majority of sexually active girls aged 15–19 in developing countries are married, and married adolescent girls tend to have higher rates of HIV infection than their sexually active, unmarried peers. Married adolescent girls represent a sizable fraction of adolescents at risk and experience some of the highest rates of HIV prevalence of any group. Nonetheless, married adolescents have been marginal in adolescent HIV/AIDS policies and programs and have not been the central subjects for programs aimed at adult married women. This paper offers a partial explanation for why married adolescents have so often been overlooked, the reasons why marriage might bring elevated risk of HIV, initial analytic tools to assist policymakers in determining how to accord appropriate levels of priority to the marriage process, five brief case studies, and a menu of potential policy interventions and actions to make married adolescents an integral part of reproductive health and HIV-prevention initiatives.

Key Points The COVID-19 pandemic and its associated restrictions raised concerns that adolescents in Ethiopia may face reduced access to youth-friendly sexual and reproductive health services. Public and private service statistics data reveal that from March through the end of 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic had at least a short-term impact on adolescent sexual and reproductive health outcomes. The COVID-19 pandemic is estimated to have resulted in an annualized increase of: 20,738 adolescents with an unmet need for contraception 8,884 unintended pregnancies among adolescents Approximately 10.1 million Ethiopian birr (more than US$250,000) in costs for the Ethiopian health system for pregnancy-related and newborn care 438 adolescent women with major obstetric complications 14 adolescent maternal deaths Ethiopia’s Ministry of Health and private health providers could take several steps to ensure that access to sexual and reproductive health services for adolescents continues throughout the remainder of the COVID-19 pandemic: Adopt an emergency response plan that addresses adolescents’ sexual and reproductive health needs Support health care workers, particularly health extension workers, to increase access to contraceptives for adolescents Engage adolescents at all levels of the Ministry of Health decision-making process Support the expansion of youth-friendly services across regions with additional staff and resources

The nascent work reviewed in this compendium indicates that married girls experience significant social isolation and limited autonomy. Across the studies examined, on indicators of mobility, exposure to media, and social networks, married girls are consistently disadvantaged compared to their unmarried peers. Similarly, across studies, on most of the domains explored here (mobility, decision-making, control over economic resources, and possibly gender-based violence), married girls tend to be less empowered and more isolated than slightly older married females. There may also be health issues associated with marriage during adolescence. Married girls are frequently at a disadvantage in terms of reproductive health information—particularly regarding STIs and HIV. First-time mothers, many of whom are adolescents, by virtue of their parity may have distinct maternal health needs and risks. Finally, early marriage potentially plays a role in exposing girls and young women to severe reproductive health risks, including HIV. Many of these elevated health risks may be largely, though not exclusively, derivative of their social vulnerability.

This report reviews research and findings on adolescents and reproductive health in Pakistan. The material is drawn from a range of national surveys and medical research, as well as information gathered by nongovernmental organizations. Although adolescents make up a quarter of the population of Pakistan, they are still a new subject for research. The characterization of adolescents for this review is individuals ages 10–19, whether or not they are married, sexually active, or parents. The discussion of the research material is based on the assumption that adolescence is a developmental phase, a transition from childhood to adulthood. Basic data on education, employment, and reproductive health among adolescents shows that they are not receiving adequate schooling and capability building to equip them for the future. Due to their relative youth, lack of decision-making power, and incomplete personal development, adolescents are ill equipped to handle the reproductive health burden they face. Policies and programs, as well as legal provisions, do not protect adolescents and need to be designed to meet the needs of adolescents without disrupting their development into adults.

Previous research on the reproductive health of adolescents and youth in Pakistan has not addressed the diversity of adolescent experiences based on social status, residence, and gender. To understand the transition from adolescence to adulthood more fully, it is important to assess social, economic, and cultural aspects of that transition. This brief presents the experience of married and unmarried young people (males and females) from different social strata and residence regarding their own attitudes and expectations about reproductive health. More young people aged 15–24 live in Pakistan now than at any other time in its history—an estimated 36 million in 2004. Recognizing the dearth of information on this large group of young people, the Population Council undertook a nationally representative survey from October 2001 to March 2002. The analysis presented here comes from Adolescents and Youth in Pakistan 2001–02: A Nationally Representative Survey. The survey sought information from youth aged 15–24, responsible adults in the household, and other community members in 254 communities. A total of 6,585 households were visited and 8,074 young people were interviewed.
