Artificial intelligence (AI) seeks to make computers do the sorts of things that minds can do, which involves psychological skills such as perception, association, prediction, planning, and motor control. Intelligence is a richly structured space of diverse information-processing capacities. Accordingly, AI uses many different techniques, addressing many different tasks. ‘What is Artificial Intelligence?’ explains the two main aims of AI: one being technological and the other scientific. It looks at AI’s influence on the life sciences and philosophy. Can any AI system possess real intelligence, creativity, or life? It also considers how AI began, virtual machines, the major types of AI, and cybernetics.

Consciousness is perhaps the most familiar aspect of our existence, yet we still do not know its biological basis. This chapter outlines a biomimetic approach to consciousness science, identifying three principles linking properties of conscious experience to potential biological mechanisms. First, conscious experiences generate large quantities of information in virtue of being simultaneously integrated and differentiated. Second, the brain continuously generates predictions about the world and self, which account for the specific content of conscious scenes. Third, the conscious self depends on active inference of self-related signals at multiple levels. Research following these principles helps move from establishing correlations between brain responses and consciousness towards explanations which account for phenomenological properties—addressing what can be called the “real problem” of consciousness. The picture that emerges is one in which consciousness, mind, and life, are tightly bound together—with implications for any possible future “conscious machines.”

Allen, Rachael. The Body Beyond the Anatomy Lab: (Re)Addressing Arts Methodologies for the Critical Medical Humanities. Edinburgh University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.3366/edinburgh/9781474400046.003.0010.

Bearing witness to these anatomies ‘in the flesh’ is rooted in the cultural history of human anatomy and dissection: the meeting of artists and anatomists around the dissecting table; the public spectacle of ritualised dissections in Renaissance anatomical theatres; the study of anatomy in institutions; the contentious display of dead bodies in Gunther von Hagen’s Body Worlds, to name a few. Our bodies have commonly been understood by both medical and lay people as a biological machine of sorts and an image ‘embedded in popular culture and sustained in the anatomy lab’. First-hand experience of anatomical dissection has become a guarded professional ritual and a marker of special knowledge that depends on the violation of the taboo (access to the interior of the body and to death): ‘The anatomy theatre lies at the mysterious heart of medicine in the public fantasy and the professional imagination.’ Categorical, turbulent and romantic accounts of human dissection have circulated widely over the centuries, through prose, poetry and the arts, and it is precisely because of the body’s moral centrality that it can be used subversively by contemporary artists today.

This volume discusses media ethics perspectives on truth in the context of digitalisation, while also addressing loss of trust and interpretations of the truth in public communication. It develops theoretical classifications of ‘fake news’ and disinformation from both a sociological and a media philosophy perspective. Empirical investigations and case studies on manipulation focus on image editing and communication strategies in political debates. Moreover, the book presents problems and solutions in relation to disinformation from a journalistic perspective. The volume concludes by examining normative challenges posed by online communication in the context of both machine learning and on Twitter and YouTube. With contributions by Sybille Krämer, Simone Dietz, Günter Bentele, Charles M. Ess, Ingrid Stapf, Nikil Mukerji, Tilman Bechthold-Hengelhaupt, Christian Filk, Jan-Hinnerk Freytag, Christian Schicha, Olaf Hoffjann, Natalie Ryba, Ole Kelm, Marco Dohle, Saskia Sell, Bernd Oswald, Tobias Eberwein, Tanjev Schultz, Thomas Zeilinger, Markus Kaiser, Hektor Haarkötter, Christian Riess, Lisa Schwaiger, Mark Eisenegger and Michael Litschka.

This book exposes how a coalition of political, religious, and civic leaders are using the issue of sex to frighten, misinform, and bully Americans—paving the way for dramatic new public policies that are already restricting everyone's rights. Americans are more vulnerable today than ever to anxiety about sexual danger, to believing that their sexuality is not "normal" or moral, and to laws and public policies that restrict their rights, criminalize their consenting behavior, and confuse and miseducate their children. In the second edition of America's War on Sex: The Continuing Attack on Law, Lust, and Liberty, psychologist, sex therapist, and courtroom expert witness Marty Klein sets the record straight and uncovers how the "Sexual Disaster Industry" works—a powerful social and political propaganda machine that is supported by the very citizens it victimizes. This book analyzes eight "battlegrounds" in which America's War on Sex is being fought and examines how each one is the focus of an unrelenting struggle to regulate sexuality in direct contradiction to our Constitutional guarantees, scientific fact, and the needs of average Americans. Klein places these various attacks on our rights in historical context, explains how the money and political power are coordinated from the same sources, and shows how the Religious Right inflames Americans' anxiety about sexuality even as it proposes repressive schemes to reduce that anxiety. This book tackles a sensitive and volatile topic head-on, addressing how the political, social, historical, religious, and emotional issues surrounding public policy interfaces with sexuality as no other work has before.
