Filed experiment was conducted to test the effect of saline water and potassium fertilizers rate on proline and water potential of Pisum sativum L. (Var.Senador Cambados ) leaves . Treatments of the experiment included two levels of water salinity( 2, 7 dSm-1) as a main plot and fertilizer rates as a sub plot. Results indicated that irrigation of plant with saline water 7 dSm-1 and fertilization 150 kg/donum increased proline accumulation and water potential 0.31 mmol/g,-17.00 bar at 9 AM morning and 0.62 mmol/g , -21.00 bar at 3 PM afternoon ,Irrigating plant with a 2 dSm-1 and fertilization 300 kg/donum decreased proline accumulation and water potential of leaves 0.22 mmol/g, -16.00 bar at 9 AM and 0.43 mmol/g,-18.00 bar at 3 PM . Irrigation plants with saline water 7 dSm-1 and fertilizer with 150 kg/ Donum K2SO4 increased Root/Shoot to 0.89 ,while 0.41 after irrigation with 2 dSm-1 saline water and fertilization with 300 kg/ Donum K2SO4 . The Na/K ratio increased to 0.53 under 7 dSm-1 of irrigation water and 150 kg/Donum fertilization and decreased to 0.1 under 2 dSm-1 irrigation water and fertilized 300 kg/ Donum . The results lead to the conclusion that potassium fertilization may reduce the inhibitory effect of increasing salinity of irrigation water on pea.

Background: Bone graft has been widely used in bone tumor reconstructive surgery. Extracorporeal irradiation (ECI) is commonly used to eliminate malignant cells before bone autograft. However, it may have negative effects on autograft incorporation. This study aimed to evaluate the ability of bone autograft incorporation after extra corporeal irradiation. Methods: 24 Sprague-Dawley rats underwent 7-mm en bloc resection of tibial diaphysis, and were divided into 4 groups. The first group did not receive irradiation; the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th groups received 50, 150 and 300 Gy bone irradiation respectively, and then reimplanted. Radiologic score were evaluated at week-6 and -8, while histopathology, osteoblast count and BMP-2 expression were examined at week-8. Data were analyzed with ANOVA or Kruskal-Wallis tests. Results: At week-6, radiologic scores in group 150 and 300 Gy were significantly lower compared to control group (4 vs 6 dan 4 vs 6; p = 0.011; p = 0.01). The same results were also obtained at week-8 (5.40 vs 7.14; p = 0.009 in the group 150 Gy and 5.60 vs 7.14; p = 0.018 in the group 300 Gy. Histopathological scores of the groups receiving 50, 150 and 300 Gy were significantly lower compared to the control group (6 vs 7, p = 0.017; 4 vs 7, p = 0.005; 6 vs 7, p = 0.013). Osteoblast count and BMP-2 expression were not significantly different among all groups. Conclusion: ECI with the dose of 50 to 300 Gy is associated with delayed bone autograft incorporation. However, the osteoinductive and osteogenesis capacity for autograft incorporation were maintained.

To ensure the productivity of rice in drought condition, ‘NERICA’ varieties of African origin has been introduced in Bangladesh and subsequently mutant lines are also developed for improving the performance further. The present study was undertaken to screen out better drought tolerant mutant lines of NERICA having other desirable traits. Thirteen NARICA mutant lines, four susceptible (BINA dhan8, BINA dhan10, BINA dhan11 and BINA dhan12) and one tolerant (BRRI dhan56) varieties were included in the experiment and selection was based on morphological and molecular characteristics. The plants were grown in pot containing 9 kg of soil and when they were 60 days old, drought was imposed by adding 1L of distilled water at every four days interval till harvesting. The quantity of water applied to control pots was double. The results showed that important yield contributing morphological attributes like days of 50% flowering, plant height, total number of tiller hill-1, panicle length, 100 seed weight, fresh weight of plant and dry weight of plant were significantly positively regulated due to drought in N10/300/P-2(1)-3-5, N1/250/P-6-2-7 and N10/300/P-2(1)-6-13 mutant lines. The findings of genetic diversity analysis through SSR markers RM32, RM202, RM351 and RM510 for N10/300/P-2(1)-3-5, N1/350/P-2-2-6 and N1/250/P-6-2-7 lines appeared to resemble to that of control (BRRI dhan56) from the UPGMA dendrogram. Based on morphological, molecular characteristics and UPGMA dendrogram study, mutant lines N10/300/P-2(1)-3-5 and N1/250/P-6-2-7 lines appeared superior as genetic material for developing better drought tolerant rice varieties.Progressive Agriculture 26:15-21, 2015

Despite remarkable advances in the treatment of T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL), relapsed cases are still a major challenge. Moreover, even successful cases often face long-term treatment-associated toxicities. Targeted therapeutics may overcome these limitations. We have previously demonstrated that casein kinase 2 (CK2)-mediated phosphatase and tensin homologue (PTEN) posttranslational inactivation, and consequent phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/Akt signaling hyperactivation, leads to increased T-ALL cell survival and proliferation. We also revealed the existence of a crosstalk between CK2 activity and the signaling mediated by interleukin 7 (IL-7), a critical leukemia-supportive cytokine. Here, we evaluated the impact of CIGB-300, a the clinical-grade peptide-based CK2 inhibitor CIGB-300 on T-ALL biology. We demonstrate that CIGB-300 decreases the viability and proliferation of T-ALL cell lines and diagnostic patient samples. Moreover, CIGB-300 overcomes IL-7-mediated T-ALL cell growth and viability, while preventing the positive effects of OP9-delta-like 1 (DL1) stromal support on leukemia cells. Signaling and pull-down experiments indicate that the CK2 substrate nucleophosmin 1 (B23/NPM1) and CK2 itself are the molecular targets for CIGB-300 in T-ALL cells. However, B23/NPM1 silencing only partially recapitulates the anti-leukemia effects of the peptide, suggesting that CIGB-300-mediated direct binding to CK2, and consequent CK2 inactivation, is the mechanism by which CIGB-300 downregulates PTEN S380 phosphorylation and inhibits PI3K/Akt signaling pathway. In the context of IL-7 stimulation, CIGB-300 blocks janus kinase/signal transducer and activator of transcription (JAK/STAT) signaling pathway in T-ALL cells. Altogether, our results strengthen the case for anti-CK2 therapeutic intervention in T-ALL, demonstrating that CIGB-300 (given its ability to circumvent the effects of pro-leukemic microenvironmental cues) may be a valid tool for clinical intervention in this aggressive malignancy.

Field experiment was conducted to test the effect of saline water and fertilizers rate on Pisum sativum L. plants . Treatments of the experiment included two levels of water salinity (2, 7 dSm-1) as a main plot and three levels of potash fertilization K2SO4 (44%K) namely 150 control, 300 and 450 kg/Donum as a sub plot. Results indicated that irrigation of plant with saline water 7 dSm-¹ caused a significant decrease in K and P contents specially in the upper parts of the plants , the percentage of the K increased (2.80%) under 2 dSm-¹of irrigation water and 300 kg/ donum fertilizer rate in the upper leaves, However K decreased(1.10%) in lower leaves under 7 dSm-¹ and 300 kg/donum fertilizer. while P increased in pods under same water salinity but with 150kg/ donum potash fertilizer. although P decreased( 0. 3 %) in pods under 7 dSm-¹ salinity water with 150 kg/donum fertilizer. However the results showed irrigation with 7 dSm-¹ saline water and 150kg/ donum fertilizer increased Ca, Mg and Na percentage ( 3.1 ,0.45 ,1.19 % ) in the roots of plants respectively , the lowest Ca ,Mg percentage was in pods of plants irrigated with 7 dSm-¹ saline water and fertilized with 150kg/ donum (0.39,0.05%), beside Na lowest percentage was ( 0.16 %) in upper leaves after using 2 dSm-¹ saline water and fertilized with 300kg/ donum. Accordingly, conclusion could be made that potassium fertilization may reduce the inhibitory effect of increasing salinity of irrigation water on pea.

Valence-band and Yb 4d photoemission spectra of YbXCu 4 (X=In, Cd, Mg) have been measured with high energy resolution from 10 to 300 K. In the valence-band photoemission spectra of YbInCu 4 and YbCdCu 4, the structure due to the Yb 2+ 4f 7/2 states is clearly observed near the Fermi level (E F ) at 10 K. The intensity of the Yb 2+ 4f 7/2 structure decreases with increasing temperature and the structure almost disappears at 300 K. The amount of the enhancement from 50 to 107 K is much stronger for YbInCu 4 than for YbCdCu 4. On the other hand, the Yb 2+ 4f 7/2 structure of YbMgCu 4 is observed as a broad peak near E F and the spectra show little temperature dependence. In the Yb 4d photoemission spectra of YbInCu 4 and YbCdCu 4, the structures due to the Yb 2+ and Yb 3+ states are recognized. The intensity ratio Yb 2+/ Yb 3+ increases with decreasing temperature. In the Yb 4d spectra of YbMgCu 4, on the other hand, almost only structures due to Yb 2+ states are observed.

Abstract Background: Oprozomib (OPZ) is an oral proteasome inhibitor. This phase 1b/2 study (NCT01416428) is evaluating single-agent OPZ in patients with relapsed hematologic malignancies, including those with multiple myeloma (MM) and Waldenström macroglobulinemia (WM). In the phase 1b portion of the study, the maximum tolerated dose (MTD) of single-agent OPZ was 300 mg/day when administered on days 1, 2, 8, and 9 of a 14-day cycle (2/7 schedule) or 240 mg/day when administered on days 1-5 of a 14-day cycle (5/14 schedule) (Vij et al. Blood.2014;124:abstr 34). Here, we present final results from the phase 2 portion of the study. Methods: Adults with relapsed MM or WM (≥1 prior therapy) were eligible for the phase 2 portion of the study. The primary objective of the phase 2 portion was to determine the overall response rate (ORR). During phase 2, patients on the 5/14 schedule received OPZ at the MTD of 240 mg/day, or in a step-up dosing scheme where patients received 150 mg/day in cycle 1, and stepped-up to a target dose of 180 mg/day thereafter (ie, 150/180 mg/day). Patients on the 2/7 schedule received OPZ in a step-up dosing scheme of 240/300 mg/day. All patients received premedication with a 5-hydroxytryptamine-3 inhibitor and dexamethasone 4 mg. Results: During phase 2, patients were initially treated on the 5/14 schedule at the MTD of 240 mg/day (MM, n=27; WM, n=17). Three patients with MM died on study: 2 due to treatment-related gastrointestinal (GI) hemorrhage and 1 due to progressive disease. The study protocol was then amended to test alternative regimens and lower doses, and patients were subsequently enrolled on the 2/7 and 5/14 step-up dosing schedules (240/300 mg/day and 150/180 mg/day, respectively). The phase 2 portion enrolled 56 patients on the 2/7 step-up dosing schedule (MM, n=41; WM, n=15) and 34 patients on the 5/14 step-up dosing schedule (all MM). Median ages in MM patients were 65 years (2/7, 240/300 mg/day), 64.5 years (5/14, 150/180 mg/day), and 63 years (5/14, 240 mg/day); median ages in WM patients were 65 years (2/7, 240/300 mg/day) and 62 years (5/14, 240 mg/day). Median numbers of prior regimens were 4, 3.5, 5, 2, and 3 in these cohorts, respectively. Among MM patients, 68% were bortezomib (BTZ)-refractory, 37% were carfilzomib (CFZ)-refractory, 75% were lenalidomide-refractory, 45% were pomalidomide-refractory, and 71% had received prior transplant. Median treatment durations were 11.4 weeks (MM, 2/7 schedule, 240/300 mg/day), 10.1 weeks (MM, 5/14 schedule, 150/180 mg/day), 5.4 weeks (MM, 5/14 schedule, 240 mg/day), 34.6 weeks (WM, 2/7 schedule, 240/300 mg/day), and 8.1 weeks (WM, 5/14 schedule, 240 mg/day). Across all cohorts, the most common grade ≥3 adverse events (AEs) included diarrhea, anemia, thrombocytopenia, fatigue, nausea, and vomiting (Table 1). Among patients with MM, the proportions of patients who discontinued treatment due to AEs were 44%, 12%, and 48% in the 2/7, 240/300 mg/day; 5/14, 150/180 mg/day; and 5/14, 240 mg/day cohorts, respectively. Among patients with WM, the proportions of patients who discontinued treatment due to AEs were 20% and 47% in the 2/7 and 5/14 schedules, respectively. No on-study deaths occurred in the 2/7 schedule nor in the 5/14 step-up dosing cohorts. Efficacy outcomes are shown in Table 2. Among response-eligible patients with MM, ORRs were 34%, 22%, and 25% in the 2/7, 240/300 mg/day (n=38); 5/14, 150/180 mg/day (n=32); and 5/14, 240 mg/day (n=24) cohorts, respectively. Among BTZ-refractory patients with MM, ORRs were 28% and 17% on the 2/7 (n=29) and 5/14 (n=24) schedules, respectively; among CFZ-refractory patients, ORRs were 8% and 10% on the 2/7 (n=13) and 5/14 (n=21) schedules. For response-eligible patients with WM, ORRs were 71% and 47% on the 2/7 (n=14) and 5/14 (n=17) schedules. Conclusions: Single-agent OPZ appears to have promising activity in patients with relapsed MM or WM, with durable responses overall and responses observed in those refractory to BTZ or CFZ. GI events (primarily diarrhea) were among the most common grade ≥3 AEs with single-agent OPZ. Further exploration of OPZ therapeutic effect is planned with modified formulations and optimized schedule and dosing administration. The tetranuclear neutral species [CrIII4(μ3-O)2(μ2-CH3CO2)7(tbpy0)(tbpy•)]0·3THF has been prepared from a mixture of [CrII2(μ2-CH3CO2)4]·2H2O and 4,4′-di-tert-butyl-2,2′-bipyridine (1:2) in tetrahydrofuran (THF) under anaerobic conditions. Black crystals of [CrIII4(μ-O)2(μ-CH3CO2)7(tbpy)2]0 were grown and investigated by X-ray crystallography: a [Cr4O2]8+ butterfly core structure has been identified. In addition, the presence of seven μ2-acetate bridges, a neutral (tbpy0) ligand, and a single π-radical anion (tbpy•)1– have been clearly identified. The magnetic properties have been investigated by solid-state SQUID (superconducting quantum interference device) measurements (2–300 K) and a coupling model is presented. Its X-band electron paramagnetic resonance spectrum has been recorded at 10 and 300 K in toluene solution and successfully simulated. The spin of the (tbpy•)1– radical couples strongly antiferromagnetically to one Cr(III) center (J4 = –129 cm−1). These properties are compared with those reported previously for the monocationic species [CrIII4(μ3-O)2(μ2-CH3CO2)7(bpy0)2](PF6) in Bino et al. (Inorg. Chem. 1991, 30, 856).

(R,S)-4-Amino-3-(7-methylbenzo[b]furan-2-yl)-butanoic acid (7-MBFG), a new benzofuran analogue of the GABAB receptor agonist baclofen, has been evaluated for pharmacological activity on GABAB receptors in the guinea-pig isolated ileum and rat neocortical slices. 7-MBFG (300 and 500 µM) reversibly antagonized the (R,S)-baclofen induced depression of cholinergic twitch contractions in the guinea-pig ileum and shifted the concentration-response curve for baclofen to the right, in a parallel manner, giving an apparent pA2 value of 3.7 ± 0.3. Likewise, 7-MBFG (300 and 500 µM) reversibly blocked the baclofen-induced suppression of spontaneous discharges, in rat neocortical slices maintained in Mg2+-free Krebs medium, and caused a rightward, parallel shift of the baclofen concentration-response curve, giving an apparent pA2 value of 4.1 ± 0.1. The compound 7-MBFG belongs to a novel, new class of antagonist at central and peripheral GABAB receptors, in which the antagonist properties reside in the pseudo-aromatic character of their 3-benzo[b]furan-2-yl substituents, and might provide useful leads for further development of GABAB receptor ligands.Key words: (R,S)-baclofen, 4-amino-3-(7-methylbenzo[b]furan-2-yl)-butanoic acid, GABAB receptor antagonist, rat neocortex, guinea-pig ileum.

18088 Background: Pem and CDDP are active agents in many tumor types, and the combination is approved as first line therapy in malignant pleural mesothelioma (meso). Vorinostat (V), an orally active histone deacetylase inhibitor, was shown to induce PR in 2 meso patients (pts) (Krug 2006, Kelly 2005). A Phase I trial was undertaken to determine the safety and maximum tolerated dose (MTD) of Pem+CDDP+V. Methods: Pts with advanced solid malignancies, adequate organ function, ECOG PS = 2, = 1 prior chemotherapy, >18 yrs of age, and at least 6 months from prior treatment with Pem+CDDP were eligible. Patients were treated on 21 day cycles. V was started 2 days before standard doses of CDDP (75 mg/m2) and Pem (500 mg/m2) and was given on 4 schedules: dose levels were: I-200 mg BID for 14/21 d, II- 300 mg BID for 3/7 d wk1, 2 wk rest, III-300 mg QD for 7/21 d, and IV- 400 mg QD for 7/21 d. Results: Twenty-two pts were treated: median age was 60 (range 31–81); 13M: 9F. Tumor types were NSCLC 8, meso 5, bladder 3, colorectal 2, other 4. Nineteen of 22 patients were evaluable for investigator determined response: 1 CR (5.3%), 1 PR (5.3%), 11 SD (57.9%), 6 PD (31.6%). Conclusions: Dehydration and fatigue were common DLTs on different schedules of Pem+CDDP+V. V 300 mg x 7 days was tolerable in this combination. Hints of clinical activity were observed in bladder cancer and sarcoma patients, and stable disease was seen in three mesothelioma patients. Alternative dose schedules of Pem + V are under investigation. [Table: see text] No significant financial relationships to disclose.

Non-linear to linear negative magnetoresistance (MR) was studied under the magnetic field ranging from −7 T to 7 T with a change in measurement temperature from 2 K to 300 K. Under the magnetic field of 7 T, a maximum MR magnitude of 8.2% was observed at 2 K. The chemical vapor deposition technique was adopted to synthesize the amorphous carbon thin films. Non-saturated and non-linear negative MR was observed for the lower temperatures, while 10 K was observed as transition temperature. Afterwards, the more likely linear MR behavior was observed up to 300 K. MR shape change was correlated with the structural morphology of metallic disordered graphitic layers or the random stacking of graphene layers with amorphous carbon. The negative MR mechanism for such a non-linear to linear shift was partially assumed as a combined effect of the diffused scattering theory and the weak localization theory. The negative MR effect has a direct relation with the degree of structural order.

The experiment included anatomy study .Results water salinity ( 2,7 dSm-1) as a main plot and fertilizer rates as a sub plot. Results indicated that irrigation with saline water 7 dSm-¹ caused a significant decrease in N contents especially in the lower parts of the plants. The percentage of the N decreased in lower leaves to (0.01%) under 7dSm-¹ and 300 kg/donum fertilizer; however the percentage increased in the upper leaves to (2.80%) under with 2dSm-¹of irrigation water and 300 kg/ donum fertilizer rate. Fresh weight decreased to 6.26g under 7 dSm-¹ and 450 kg/donum fertilizer rate, but irrigated with 2 dSm-¹ and 300 kg/donum fertilizer rate increased it to 18.87g. The nodules number , fresh and dry weight decreased to( 114 nodule/plant ,2.18 and 1.70 g/plant ) with 7 dSm-¹ salinity water and 150 kg/donum fertilizer, respectively , the results showed that irrigation with 2 dSm-¹ saline water and 300kg/ donum fertilizer increased them to ( 167.6 nodule/plant,5.43 and 2.20 g/plant )respectively. Increasing levels of irrigation water from 2 to 7 dSm-¹ salinity, caused increased vessels thickness in both leaves and root; this is because the salt accumulated on cell wall .whereas cortex cell wall was thicker in root for same reason . Thus of nitrogen fixing symbiosis in pea was more determined with anatomy change in root tissues which caused decreasing in nodules number fresh and dry weight. Accordingly, conclusion could be made that potassium may reduce the inhibitory effect for nitrogen fixation in saline water irrigation condition.

Hepatitis B vaccine has contributed to the reduction in hepatitis B virus infections and chronic disease globally. Screening to establish extent of vaccine induced immune response and provision of booster dose are limited in most low-and-middle income countries (LMICs). Our study investigated the extent of protective immune response and breakthrough hepatitis B virus infections among adult vaccinated healthcare workers in selected health facilities in northern Uganda. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 300 randomly selected adult hepatitis B vaccinated healthcare workers in Lira and Gulu regional referral hospitals in northern Uganda. Blood samples were collected and qualitative analysis of Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), Hepatitis B surface antigen antibody (HBsAb), Hepatitis B envelop antigen (HBeAg), Hepatitis B envelop antibody (HBeAb) and Hepatitis B core antibody (HBcAb) conducted using ELISA method. Quantitative assessment of anti-hepatitis B antibody (anti-HBs) levels was done using COBAS immunoassay analyzer. Multiple logistic regression was done to establish factors associated with protective anti-HBs levels (≥ 10mIU/mL) among adult vaccinate healthcare workers at 95% level of significance. A high proportion, 81.3% (244/300) of the study participants completed all three hepatitis B vaccine dose schedules. Two (0.7%, 2/300) of the study participants had active hepatitis B virus infection. Of the 300 study participants, 2.3% (7/300) had positive HBsAg; 88.7% (266/300) had detectable HBsAb; 2.3% (7/300) had positive HBeAg; 4% (12/300) had positive HBeAb and 17.7% (53/300) had positive HBcAb. Majority, 83% (249/300) had a protective hepatitis B antibody levels (≥10mIU/mL). Hepatitis B vaccine provides protective immunity against hepatitis B virus infection regardless of whether one gets a booster dose or not. Protective immune response persisted for over ten years following hepatitis B vaccination among the healthcare workers.

Abstract Major advances have been made that have improved survival in FA patients undergoing alternate donor hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (AD-HSCT). While addition of fludarabine (FLU) to cyclophosphamide (CY) and single dose total body irradiation (450 cGy TBI) has been the single most important factor improving engraftment rates in FA patients, risks of infection and late effects remain important challenges. Seeking to reduce these risks, we hypothesized that FA patients undergoing AD-HSCT could reliably achieve neutrophil engraftment with less or no irradiation due to the profound immunosuppressive effects of FLU. Therefore, we conducted a single center, single arm, TBI dose de-escalation trial designed to determine the lowest possible dose of TBI required for engraftment in recipients of T cell depleted bone marrow (TCD BM) or umbilical cord blood (UCB) from AD. All patients received CY 10 mg/kg x 4 days, FLU 35 mg/m2 x 4 days, ATG 30 mg/kg x 5 days and a single fraction of TBI with CT guided thymic shielding. TBI dose de-escalation strata were: TBI 300 cGy (cohort 1); TBI 150 cGy (cohort 2); no TBI (cohort 3). All patients received CSA and methylprednisolone as GVHD prophylaxis and G-CSF 5 ug/kg/day until engraftment. The decision to proceed with each stepwise decrease in TBI is based upon achieving primary neutrophil engraftment in 10 of 10 patients at each dose level or 14 of 15 patients if one graft failure is observed in the first 10 patients. More than 1 graft failure in 15 patients was considered unacceptable and the next higher TBI dose level was thereafter to be considered the optimal dose. Between July 2006-July 2007, 13 FA patients were enrolled with 11 in cohort I (as patient 11 was enrolled prior to proven engraftment in patient 10) and 2 thus far in cohort 2. All patients achieved primary engraftment at a median of 11 days after HSCT. One patient (TBI 300) however developed secondary graft failure at day 178 and died at day 253. Two patients developed grade II acute GVHD and none developed chronic GVHD. With a median follow up of 10.2 months, 12 of 13 patients are alive with complete chimerism and no active GVHD. Abstract The response of 2- to 3-year-old ‘Tifblue’ rabbiteye blueberry (Vaccinium ashei Reade) plants to periodic flooding of different durations and seasons was studied under field conditions in 1985 and 1986. Soil redox potentials (Eh) decreased to between 0 and −300 mV within 2 days of flooding and recovered to preflood levels (200 to 300 mV) within 8 to 10 days after flooding release. Plants survived 2-day (four periods) and 7-day (two periods) spring flooding treatments, whereas losses of 17% to 100% occurred after two 2- to 15-day summer flooding episodes. Most (83%) plants survived 106 to 117 days of spring flooding, while 33% and 0% survived 78 and 90 days of summer flooding, respectively. Generally, leaf area, percent fruit set, and yields decreased after two 7-day spring flooding periods, whereas the number of flower buds formed decreased by 38% to 70% with as little as two 2-day summer flooding periods. Stomatal conductance and transpiration decreased after the onset and increased after the release of the two 2- and 7-day summer flooding treatments, but remained low for the 15-day (two periods) and 78-day treatments. The effects of periodic flooding on plant survival, stomatal conductance, and the number of flower buds formed were similar to those found for continuously flooded plants in a previous study.

The adsorption of the organometallic compounds bis(hexafluoroacetylacetonato)zinc(II) (Zn(hfac)2) and bis(hexafluoroacetylacetonato)nickel(II) (Ni(hfac)2) on the surface of Si(111)-7×7 were studied by a combination of scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). These compounds are analogues of the compound bis(hexafluoroacetylacetonato)copper(II), which is an important precursor for the chemical vapour deposition of copper that we have previously studied. Both XPS and STM results indicate that the Zn(hfac)2 is adsorbed intact on the surface, and remains intact on the surface at temperatures up to 300 K. The XPS shows a transition from a physisorbed state to a chemisorbed state at temperatures between 160 and 300 K. At higher temperatures Zn(hfac)2 decomposed to form Zn and fluorocarbon fragments. The metal component diffused into the substrate. The Ni(hfac)2 complex could not be successfully adsorbed on the Si surface: it was shown that this was due to decomposition of the molecule in the vapour phase, probably due to the higher temperatures needed to evaporate this relatively involatile compound.Key words: scanning tunnelling microscopy, chemical vapour deposition, zinc, copper.

In this study, recycled glass is used to replace the natural fine aggregate in different mix proportions to obtain the optimum combination that will produce the highest strength. The control samples are Grade 30 ordinary Portland cement concrete (OPCC) containing 100% natural sand and coarse aggregate. The recycled glass concretes contain 70% natural fine aggregate + 30% size 300 micron crushed glass (Sample 2), and 70% fine aggregate + 15% size 300 micron crushed glass + 15% size greater than 300 micron crushed glass (Sample 3). The compressive strengths of the concrete samples with recycled glass are higher than the control samples at all ages of 7, 28, 56 and 90 days. At age 60 days, the strength gain of the control samples shows no significant increment but both samples that include recycled glass still show significant increment in strength. It is found that recycled glass performed better when utilised at size 300 microns and less. The recorded strength of the control, Sample 2 and 3 at 90 days are 47, 61 and 55 MPa.

e13040 Background: Darinaparsin [Zinapar, ZIO-101(S-dimethylarsino-glutathione)], is a novel organic arsenic compound with in vitro and in vivo anticancer activity in tumor cell lines resistant to arsenic trioxide. An oral formulation is now available. Methods: This study used a 3+3 escalating design, dosing orally for 21 days followed by 7 days off (28 day cycle). Pts with AST refractory to standard therapy, ECOG performance score (PS) ≤ 2 and adequate organ function were treated. Study objectives were safety profile evaluation, pharmacokinetics (PK) and preliminary activity of oral darinaparsin. CTCAE v. 4.0 and RECIST 1.1 were used. Results: A total of 10 pts (8 males, 2 females), with ECOG PS 0=2, 1=8, mean age of 71 years (range: 60-81), median of prior therapies 3 (range: 1-4) were treated. A median of 2 cycles of darinaparsin was administered (range: 1-6). Dose limiting toxicities (DLT) were confusion (n=1; 400 mg), cognitive disturbance (n=1; 400 mg) and encephalopathic syndrome (n=1; 300 mg), reversible with drug discontinuation. The highest tolerable dose was 300 mg per day. Most frequent AEs were: hypokalemia, nausea (40% each), fatigue (30%), anemia, diarrhea, hypophosphatemia, pneumonia, vomiting (20% each). Most frequent grade ≥3 AEs were: hypokalemia, hypophosphatemia (20% each). Best overall response was stable disease (at 2 cycles), observed in 5 pts: adenocarcinoma of colon (2 pts), chordoma, adenocarcinoma of small bowel and carcinoma of tongue. PK analysis of 400 mg cohort (n=4) and 300 mg cohort (n=6) resulted in Tmax at 9 hr post treatment and Cmax slightly greater than dose proportional (p<0.05). Steady-state trough levels were achieved on or before Day 5. Approximately 40 % greater Cmax was observed on D15 compared to D1 for the 300 mg cohort (p<0.05) while unchanged at 400 mg. DLTs were observed when duration of exposure was more than 7 days and serum trough levels were 800 ng/ml or above. Conclusions: Oral darinaparsin is well tolerated at the dosage of 300 mg per day for 21days in a 28 day cycle in pts with AST. Preliminary evidence of clinical activity and a predictable PK profile justify further evaluation of darinaparsin in selected indications.

Abstract Bortezomib (btz) has established efficacy in relapsed/refractory multiple myeloma (MM) patients (pts). Combinations of btz and other agents can produce even higher response rates. We have reported that oral cyclophosphamide (CY) + prednisone (P) produced partial remissions (PR) in 41% and a median progression free survival (PFS) of 18.6 mos in MM pts who had progressed after ASCT. We now report a phase I trial adding btz to CY + P in 27 patients with relapsed/refractory MM. CY was given p.o. once weekly on days 1, 8, 15, and 22 of a 28 day cycle while P 100 mg was given every other morning. CY was given before btz on appropriate days. A total of 8 cycles was planned. The median age was 59 yrs (48–74); 16 were male. Ig subtypes were: IgG (19 pts), IgA (4 pts), kappa light chain (4 pts). The median number of prior regimens was 2 (1–6); all had undergone prior ASCT and 59% had received thalidomide and/or lenalidomide. The median pretreatment β2-microglobulin was 228 nm/L (114–875), albumin 38 g/L (30–46) and creatinine 86 nmol/L (58–153). The dose escalation scheme and toxicity with cycle 1 is shown below: Table 1. Dose levels and toxicity Dose Level N CY dose (mg/m2) Btz dose (mg/m2) Gr 3–4 Toxicity (cycle 1) *Community acquired pneumonia without neutropenia; ** protocol amended to exclude G-CSF for 2 weeks before study entry. 1 6 150 0.7 d 1,8,15 2 CAP* 2 3 300 0.7 d 1,8,15 0 3 3 300 1.0 d 1,8,15 1 ↓ PO4 4 6 300 1.0 d 1,4,8,11 1 ↓ANC**; 1 ↑ AST/ALT 5 6 300 1.3 d 1,4,8,11 1 N/V 6 3 300 1.5 d 1,8,15 0 All the above toxicities above were gr 3 except for 1 transient episode of gr 4 hypophosphatemia. Dose limiting toxicity was not seen. The median number of protocol cycles given per pt was 7 (1–8); 1 pt chose to continue therapy and has received 15 cycles. Toxicities in cycles 2–8 were generally mild. Episodes of infection included shingles (5), gr 3 respiratory infection (6) and febrile neutropenia (2). A total of 168 cycles have been administered; the dose of CY was reduced in 5 cycles due to neutropenia (↓ANC) (3), thrombocytopenia (1) or increased AST/ALT (1), while the btz dose was decreased in 4 cycles due to gr 2 peripheral neuropathy (PN) (1) or ↓ANC (3). 12 pts have completed all 8 cycles, 5 are on therapy and 7 have progressed after a median of cycles 3 (1–7). 3 stopped protocol therapy (physician choice in 1 pt with minimal response, gr 2 PN in 2 pts (after 7 cycles at dose levels 2 and 5) including the pt with prior btz dose reduction. 14/15 pts treated at dose levels 4–6 (effective btz doses) were evaluable for response after receiving at least 2 cycles. Best response was CR/nearCR in 6 (43%) and PR in 7 (50%) for an overall response rate of 93%. The median follow-up is 12 mos (1–20). 6 pts have progressed after stopping therapy. The median PFS is 11 mos, while the median overall survival (OS) has not been reached. The actuarial 1 year OS and PFS are 83% (95% CI 61–93%) and 47% (95% CI 24–68%), respectively. 7 of 10 planned additional pts have entered the phase II portion of the trial at dose level 6. 3 have completed at least 2 cycles; 2 are in CR/near CR while one is in PR. We conclude: Btz 1.5 mg/m2 can be given safely on a convenient weekly schedule days 1, 8 and 15 of a 28 day cycle in combination with full dose oral CY + P in relapsed/refractory MM pts; preliminary response rates at this dose level include 4/6 (67%) CR/near CRs and 1/6 (17%) PR.

Abstract Treatments were applied to 7 tree plots replicated 4 times in a randomized complete block design. The orchard block consisted of 'Empire', 'Red Delicious', and 'Rome' on M7a, planted in 1982 on a 15 by 18 ft spacing. Replicates 1 and 2 were on 'Red Delicious', while replicates 3 and 4 were on 'Empire'. Sprays were applied with an FMC handgun sprayer using a 5 HP diaphragm pump at 280 psi until run off, with approx. 4 gal of spray applied to each tree. One application of Pydrin 2.4 EC 178 ml/100 gal was made on 6 Jun in order to build mite populations, since few mites were present early in the season. Miticides were applied on 1 Jul and again on 10 Jul. Conditions during applications were 75°F on both dates, with 2 mph winds and cloudy skies on 1 Jul, and 2-4 mph winds and clear skies on 10 Jul. Treatments were as follows: 1) BAS 300 00 I 20 WP .05 lb AI/100 gal, 2) BAS 300 00 I 20 WP . 12 lb AI/100 gal, 3) BAS 300 11 I 75 WP .05 lb AI/100 gal, 4) BAS 300 11 I 75 WP . 12 lb AI/100 gal, 5) Omite (propargite) 30 WP .60 lb AI/100 gal, and 6) Omite 30 WP .30 lb AI/100 gal, 7) Untreated. ERM counts were taken in samples of 15 leaves per tree on 7 Jun (pre-treatment), and again on 3, 8, 15, 22, 29 Jul, and 5, 12 Aug. SP populations were evaluated on 12 Aug. Predacious mites and beetles were not present early in the season, since they had been eliminated by the Pydrin application. Fruit finish was evaluated by taking 30 fruit from each tree and evaluating for fruit russet on a 0 to 5 basis. Values were used as follows: 0 = no russet, 1 = raised lenticels, 2 = 1-10% russeted, 3 = 11-15% russeted, 4 = 16-50% russeted, and 5 = >51% russeted. Each fruit was evaluated, and an average per replicate was used in the calculations.

Abstract Interior longevity of chrysanthemum (Dendranthema grandiflora Tzvelev.) increased 9 to 16 days on plants maintained at a mean maximum PAR level of 500 μmol·s−1·m−2 compared to plants shifted to 100 μmol·s−1·m−2 7 weeks after the start of inductive photoperiods. Termination of fertilization 7 weeks after initiation of inductive photoperiods increased interior longevity 7 days at PAR levels of 100 and 300 μmol·s−1·m−2 compared to plants where fertilization was continued until flowering. Plant quality and interior longevity were higher at a simulated shipping temperature of 4C than at 16 or 24C. Shipping duration had little effect on longevity at 4 and 16C, but decreased longevity 7 days when duration was extended from 2 to 7 days at 24C. Termination of fertilization 3 weeks before flowering increased longevity from 6 to 10 days at all simulated shipping temperatures and durations.

The objective of this study is to investigate the application of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) in the treatment of wastewater contaminated with furfural. The AOPs investigated is the homogeneous photo-Fenton (UV/H2O2/Fe+2) process. The experiments were conducted by using cylindrical stainless steel batch photo-reactor. The influence of different variables: initial concentration of H2O2 (300-1300mg/L), Fe+2(20-70mg/L), pH(2-7) and initial concentration of furfural (50-300 mg/L) and their relationship with the mineralization efficiency were studied. Complete mineralization for the system UV/H2O2/Fe+2 was achieved at: initial H2O2 = 1300mg/L, Fe+2 = 30mg/L, pH=3, temperature =30oC and irradiation time of 60 min, for 300mg/L furfural concentration. The results have shown that the oxidation reagent H2O2 plays a very important role in the furfural mineralization.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the possible effect of two doses of hCG (100 and 300 IU) applied at two different times (7 and 14 d) after a fixed-time artificial insemination protocol (FTAI) upon some variables involved in the embryonic implantation rate in goats during the natural deep anestrous season (April, 25° north). The experimental units considered crossbred, multiparous, anovulatory goats (n = 69, Alpine, Saanen, Nubian x Criollo), with average body weight (43.6 ± 5.7 kg) and body condition score (1.86 ± 0.28 units) located in northern–semiarid Mexico (25° N, 103° W). Once the goat’s anestrus status was confirmed, goats were subjected to an estrus induction protocol. Upon estrus induction confirmation, goats (n = 61) were subjected to a FTAI procedure. Immediately after the FTAI, the goats were randomly distributed to five experimental groups: (1). G100-7 (n = 13) 100 IU, hCG 7 d post-FTAI, (2). G100-14 (n = 12) 100 IU hCG, 14 d post-FTAI, (3). G300-7 (n = 12) 300 IU, hCG, 7 d post-FTAI, (4). G300-14 (n = 12) 300 IU hCG 14 d post-FTAI, and (5). Control group, CONT (n = 12) 0.5 mL saline, 7 and 14 d post-FTAI. The response variables conception rate (39.36 ± 0.23), fertility rate (27.96%), prolificacy rate (1.1 ± 0.29 kids), ovulation rate (0.74 ± 0.20 corpus luteum) corpus luteum diameter (10.15 ± 0.59 mm), embryo number (1.58 ± 0.20), and embryo implantation rate (48.96%), did not differ between treatments. However, while the variables fecundity rate (67%), embryo efficiency index-1 (33.99 ± 0.20%), and embryo efficiency index-2 (27.94 ± 0.30%) were favored by the G300-14 treatment, the corpus luteum area was favored (p < 0.05) by both G300-7 (113.30 ± 0.19 mm2) and G300-14 (103.04 ± 0.17 mm2). Such reproductive strategy emerges as an interesting approach, not only to enhance the out-of-season reproductive outcomes, but also to boost one of the main rulers defining the global reproductive efficiency of a heard, namely, the embryo implantation efficiency.

3003 Background: ECHO-204 is an ongoing, open-label, phase 1/2 (P1/2) study of epacadostat (E; potent and selective oral inhibitor of the immunosuppressive enzyme indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase 1) plus PD-1 inhibitor nivolumab (N) in patients (pts) with advanced cancers (NSCLC, MEL, OVC, CRC, SCCHN, B-cell NHL [including DLBCL], GBM). Preliminary P1/2 safety and tolerability outcomes for the overall study population and P2 response for select tumor types (SCCHN, MEL, OVC, CRC) are reported. Methods: In P1 dose escalation, pts received E (25, 50, 100, 300 mg BID) + N (3 mg/kg Q2W); in P2 cohort expansion, pts received E (100 or 300 mg BID) + N (240 mg Q2W). Safety/tolerability was assessed in pts receiving ≥1 E + N dose. Response was assessed in RECIST v1.1 evaluable pts; for recently enrolled pt subgroups, only preliminary DCR (CR+PR+SD) is presented. Results: As of 29OCT2016,241 pts (P1, n = 36; P2, n = 205) were enrolled. No DLT was observed in P1. Most common TRAEs (≥15%) in pts treated with E 100 mg (n = 70) and E 300 mg (n = 135) were rash (33% and 22%, respectively), fatigue (26% and 31%), and nausea (24% and 19%). Rash was the most common grade ≥3 TRAE in E 100 mg and E 300 mg subgroups (10% and 12%). TRAEs led to discontinuation in 7% (E 100 mg) and 13% (E 300 mg) of pts. There were no TR-deaths. For the 23 recently enrolled, efficacy-evaluable SCCHN pts treated with E 300 mg, preliminary DCR was 70% (n = 16). Of 30 MEL pts, 8 were treated with E 100 mg and 22 were more recently enrolled and treated with E 300 mg. ORR (CR+PR) and DCR in MEL pts treated with E 100 mg were 75% (n = 6; all PR) and 100% (n = 8; 2 SD), respectively. Preliminary DCR in MEL pts treated with E 300 mg was 64% (n = 14). Of 29 OVC pts, 18 were treated with E 100 mg and 11 with E 300 mg.ORR and DCR for OVC pts treated with E 100 mg were 11% (n = 2; 2 PR) and 28% (n = 5; 3 SD); for 11 OVC pts treated with E 300 mg, ORR and DCR were 18% (n = 2; 2 PR) and 36% (n = 4; 2 SD).For 25 CRC pts (all E 100 mg), ORR and DCR were 4% (n = 1; PR) and 24% (n = 6; 5 SD).Safety/efficacy evaluations are ongoing for all cohorts. Conclusions: E + N was generally well tolerated up to the maximum E 300-mg dose. P2 ORR/DCR outcomes are promising, particularly in SCCHN and MEL pts. Updated data will be presented at the meeting. The mixed-ligand dinuclear complexes (2,2'-dipyridyl)-(3-methoxysalicylaldiminato)copper( II) perchlorate (1) and (2,2'-dipyridyl)-(4-methoxysalicylaldiminato)copper(II) perchlorate (2)were synthesized and their crystal structures determined. Both structures consist of a dimeric unit involving a planar Cu2O2 group. In both structures, the coordination sphere of the Cu atoms can be described as an elongated octahedron where the basal plane is formed by the twoN atoms of the 2,2'-dipyridyl molecule and the two O atoms of the salicylaldehyde anion. The phenoxo O atom is the negative ligand of the monomeric unit. Two apical Cu-O contacts complete the 4+2 coordination of the Cu atoms. They correspond to one of the O atoms of the perchlorate anion and to the O atom of the nearest salicylaldehyde molecule. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility data obey the Curie-Weiss law with Θ = -10.3(2) K for 1 and -10.1(2) K for 2. The decrease of the effective magnetic moment from 1.89(7) μB at 300 K to 1.77(7) μB at 70 K for 1 and from 1.88(8) μB at 300 K to 1.76(8) μB at 70 K for 2 and the negative Weiss constants indicate weak antiferromagnetic interactions between the two copper atoms in the dimeric units.

AbstractAiming at the development of new photolabeling agents, the synthesis and photoreactivity of all monofluorinated derivatives of 2-azido-1-methylbenzimidazole are described. In the case of 4-, 5-, or 7-fluorination, irradiation in the presence of carboxylic acids (300 nm, Rayonet) afforded the monofluorinated 2-amino-6-acyloxybenzimidazoles in a regioselective manner, presumably after conversion of the initially formed nitrene to the N-cyanodiazaxylylene. Incorporation of chloride was also possible, and yields were comparable to those observed for the non-fluorinated parent compound. When blocking the reactive 6-position by a fluoro substituent, the title reaction was not possible. The analysis of the 19F NMR chemical shifts of the 5- and 7-monofluorinated products allowed the distinction between carboxylates and other nucleophiles.

Detailed neutron powder diffraction measurements have been carried out on two polymorphs of anhydrous magnesium sulfate, α-MgSO4and β-MgSO4. α-MgSO4is orthorhombic, space groupCmcm(Z= 4); at 4.2 K the unit-cell dimensions area= 5.16863 (3),b= 7.86781 (5),c= 6.46674 (5) Å,V= 262.975 (2) Å3[ρcalc= 3040.16 (2) kg m−3], and at 300 K,a= 5.17471 (3),b= 7.87563 (5),c= 6.49517 (5) Å,V= 264.705 (2) Å3[ρcalc= 3020.29 (2) kg m−3]. The axial and volumetric thermal expansion coefficients are positive at all temperatures and exhibit no unusual behaviour. Structures were refined at 4.2 and 300 K toRP< 3%; less precise structural parameters were determined during warming from 4.2 to 300 K. β-MgSO4has a more complex structure, crystallizing in space groupPbnm(Z= 4); the unit-cell dimensions at 4.2 K area = 4.73431 (8),b= 8.58170 (12),c= 6.67266 (11) Å,V= 271.100 (5) Å3[ρcalc= 2949.04 (5) kg m−3], and at 300 K,a= 4.74598 (7),b= 8.58310 (10),c= 6.70933 (10) Å,V= 273.306 (4) Å3[ρcalc= 2925.42 (4) kg m−3]. The thermal expansivities of theaandcaxes, and the volumetric thermal expansion coefficient, are positive at all temperatures and normally behaved. However, the thermal expansion of thebaxis is both very small and negative below ∼125 K. Structural and thermal motion parameters for β-MgSO4as a function of temperature are also reported.

Guava (Psidium guajava L.) is a perishable and climacteric fruit. The peel surface of guava is soft. During transportation, guava surface is rupture lack of proper packaging. Two types of corrugated fibre board (CFB) cartons of 7 and 5 ply and one type of wooden box were designed and fabricated for transportation of guava in Farm Machinery and Postharvest Process Engineering (FMPE) Division, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Gazipur in 2013. The dimensions of the cartons were 513 x 300 x 240 mm and 400 x 300 x 300 mm. The 7 ply cartons of both the size were found better than those of 5 ply cartons in terms of static load bearing capacity. The carton of 513 x 300 x 240 mm was better than that of second one. The holding capacities of these cartons were about 18-20 kg of guava. The static load bearing capacities of both the cartons of 7 and 5 ply cartons were 90 and 70 kg, respectively. Green matured guava was harvested, sorted and packed in different packages, such as bamboo basket, wooden box, plastic crate, and CFB cartons. They were transported from Sharupkhati of Barisal to Gazipur by a track. Then the guava packages were opened in FMPE Division, BARI, Gazipur and stored at ambient temperature (28.8 ± 2°C) and humidity (87± 2%) for 8 days. The highest shelf-life of guava was found in wooden box without wrapping and the lowest shelf-life was in CFB cartons with polyethylene (0.05 mm) having 2% perforation. Wooden box was found suitable as packaging material for transportation of guava in terms of freshness, shelf-life, and packaging cost. Packaging cost of CFB cartons was higher followed by that of plastic crate, wooden box, and bamboo basket. Packaging costs of plastic crate and wooden box were cheaper than those of CFB cartons and bamboo basket. Plastic crate and wooden box should be used for local market to transport the fruits. CFB carton may be used for export market or supper market. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/bjar.v39i2.20437 Bangladesh J. Agril. Res. 39(2): 337-350, June 2014

Abstract The objective was to determine the interactive effects of particle size reduction and pelleting on the apparent ileal digestibility (AID) of starch and the standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of amino acids (AA) in corn-soybean meal diets fed to pigs. Six corn-soybean meal based diets were arranged in a 3 × 2 factorial with 3 particle sizes of corn (i.e., 700, 500, or 300 μm) and 2 diet forms (i.e., meal or pelleted). An N-free diet was also used and there were, therefore, a total of 7 diets. Pigs were allowed ad libitum access to feed and water. Pigs (n = 7; initial body weight = 59.30 kg; SD = 2.77) that were equipped with a T-cannula in the distal ileum were allotted to the 7 diets using a 7 × 7 Latin square design with 7 periods. Ileal digesta were collected for 2 days after 5 days of adaptation. The statistical model included diet as fixed effect and pig and period as random effects. Contrast coefficients were used to determine effects of diet form, linear effects of particle size, and the interaction. Results indicated that the AID of starch was linearly increased (P = 0.001) with reduced particle size of corn and pelleted diets had greater (P = 0.029) AID of starch than meal diets (Table 1). The SID of Leu, Lys, Met, Phe, Thr, and Val linearly increased with reducing particle size, but the increase was greater in pelleted diets than in meal diets (interaction, P < 0.05). The SID of Arg, His, Ile, and Val also linearly increased (P < 0.05) as the particle size of corn was reduced, and the SID of all indispensable AA except Trp was greater (P < 0.05) in pelleted diets than in meal diets. In conclusion, reducing the particle size of corn from 700 to 300 μm increased the AID of starch and the SID of AA, but the AID of starch and the SID of most indispensable AA was greater in pelleted diets than in meal diets. If there were interactions, the effects of reducing particle size were greater when corn particle size was reduced from 500 to 300 μm in meal diets and from 700 to 500 μm in pelleted diets.
