The inverse degree r(G) of a finite graph G = (V,E) is defined as r(G) = ?v?V 1/d(v), where d(v) is the degree of vertex v. In Discrete Math. 310 (2010), 940-946, Mukwembi posed the following conjecture: Let G be a connected chemical graph with diameter diam(G) and inverse degree r(G). Then diam(G) ? 12/5 r(G) + O(1). In this paper, we settle the conjecture affirmatively.

ObjectivesOptimum transfusion trigger for adults undergoing cancer surgery is uncertain. Published guidelines recommend restrictive transfusion strategies in hospitalised adults. We aimed to measure the red cell transfusion rate and haemoglobin trigger in patients undergoing cancer surgery and how closely practice reflected published guidelines.DesignRetrospective cohort study.SettingSingle tertiary centre.ParticipantsAdult patients undergoing surgery for upper gastrointestinal or liver malignancy.ExposurePostguideline change (2015–2017) versus preguideline change (2011–2012).Outcome measuresPrimary: transfusion rate, secondary: transfusion trigger. Multivariable logistic regression was used to assess factors and adjust for confounders affecting our outcome measures.Results1578 surgical records were identified for 1520 patients. 946/1530 (62%) patients had preoperative anaemia. The transfusion rate decreased from 23% in 2011–2012 to 14% in 2015–2017. This change remained significant after adjusting for other variables associated with transfusion rates. Mean pretransfusion haemoglobin in those who were transfused was 78±13 g/L in 2011–2012 and 80±15 g/L in 2015–2017. This change in haemoglobin transfusion triggers was not significant.ConclusionTransfusion rate has decreased over the study period in patients undergoing surgery for malignancy and is consistent with a restrictive transfusion strategy.

AbstractLet G be a non-abelian finite simple group. In addition, let $$\Delta _G$$ Δ G be the intersection graph of G, whose vertices are the proper non-trivial subgroups of G, with distinct subgroups joined by an edge if and only if they intersect non-trivially. We prove that the diameter of $$\Delta _G$$ Δ G has a tight upper bound of 5, thereby resolving a question posed by Shen (Czechoslov Math J 60(4):945–950, 2010). Furthermore, a diameter of 5 is achieved only by the baby monster group and certain unitary groups of odd prime dimension.

Tuberculosis (TB) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. IRGM1 is an important protein in the innate immune response against intracellular pathogens by regulating autophagy. Polymorphisms in the IRGM genes are known to influence expression levels and may be associated with outcome of infections. This case-control study was done on 150 patients with PTB and 150 healthy subjects to determine whether the IRGM polymorphisms at positions −1208 A/G (rs4958842), −1161 C/T (rs4958843), and −947 C/T (rs4958846) were associated with PTB. The polymorphisms were determined using tetra-amplification refractory mutation system-PCR (T-ARMS-PCR). The results showed that the IRGM −1161 C/T and −947 C/T polymorphisms were associated with decreased susceptibility to PTB (OR = 0.06, 95% CI = 0.03–0.13,P < 0.001 and OR = 0.27; 95% CI = 0.013–0.55,P < 0.001, resp.). No significant difference was found among the groups regarding −1208 A/G polymorphism. In conclusion we found that the IRGM −1161 C/T and −947 C/T polymorphisms but not −1208 A/G polymorphism provide relative protection against PTB in a sample of Iranian population.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the actions offered in the Teacher Development Program from the perceptions of the teachers of the medical course of a public university that has been working with active teaching and learning methods since 2002. After each action of the program, an evaluation instrument was applied to the participants, and the answers were submitted to content analysis and then organized into three categories: infrastructure and logistics, the teaching-learning strategies and the developed content. Teachers highlight the importance of organization and planning of activities and the environment in which these actions are developed; they emphasize the importance of using teaching–learning strategies that allow greater re?ection on own practice and the integration of theory and practice. They point out that the themes proposed were timely and necessary, they recognize the importance of being in development, they talk about the motivation from the experiences lived. It is concluded that the Teacher Development is a process through which the teacher is in transformation, through a conscious and constant reflection of his own practice. This process can be promoted by institutional investments and by the regulatory mechanisms of institutions, constituted of an evaluation referenced in objective indicators, consistent with the goals to be achieved. In this sense, it is necessary to invest in permanent education, because long-term programs allow the development of the teacher´s and the institution´s needs. Abstract Background Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are becoming more frequently isolated in microbiology laboratories. There is no standardized diagnosis, treatment, and/or monitoring of patients with NTM disease. We described the experience of the Panama National Mycobacterial Laboratory in isolating NTM in patients suspected to have active tuberculosis in Panama. Methods Data registries of the National TB Program Laboratory of Panama between 2012 and 2015 were reviewed. Demographic information, relevant history, sample source, and isolate identified for each specimen obtained at the time of specimen submission was extracted. Identification of mycobacterial species were made using culture and PCR. Data were exported to an Excel workbook and a descriptive analysis was performed using STATA. Results A total of 4,545 samples were received during this period. Of these, 288 (6.3%) were not processed. From the remaining 4,257 samples, 705 (16.5%) were negative, 2,783 (65.3%) were positive for M. tuberculosis, and 769 (18%) were confirmed NTM. NTM species identification was achieved in 715 (93%) using PCR. Median age was 55 years (0 – 92); 49.4% were male. The most frequent NTM isolate was M. avium complex in 172 (22.3%) samples, followed by M. fortuitum in 131 (17%). M. chelonae was isolated in 98 (12.7%) samples, M. gordonae in 50 (6.5%), M. scrofulaceum in 20 (2.6%), and M. triviale in 16 (2.0%). NTM isolation steadily rose over the study period with 490 (63.7%) of the samples being from 2015 and 465 (94.5%) of these typified by PCR. Specimens mainly originated from the Panama metropolitan area (88.2%) and were mostly sputum samples (70.8%). Conclusion Nontuberculous mycobacteria represented an important proportion of isolates among TB suspects in Panama. The implementation of more sensitive diagnostic techniques is increasing the recovery of NTM. Further evaluation of the clinical significance of these finding is required for appropriate guideline implementation. Disclosures G. Henostroza, Aeras: Investigator, Grant recipient.

Results of two bottom grab surveys in the Olyutorsky Bay of the Bering Sea conducted in 1985 (37 stations with 60 samples in the depth range of 20–200 m) and 2012 (26 stations with 48 samples at the depths of 51–270 m) are compared. Average biomass of macrozoobenthos was rather stable: 561.1 ± 95.2 g/m2 in 1985 and 581.3 ± 94.5 g/m2 in 2012. Sea urchins, bivalves and polychaetes dominated by biomass in 1985 (84.7 % of the total biomass for these 3 groups), but sipunculids appeared in the list of the dominant taxonomic groups in 2012 when 91.3 % of the total biomass consisted of the top 4 groups. The main communities of macrozoobenthos practically retained their location and quantitative parameters. There is concluded that composition, distribution and abundance of macrozoobenthos in the Olyutorsky Bay were stable over a quarter of century.

The allotropes composed of close-packed (CP) structures that differ only in the stacking order in the system are called the CP polytypes [1]. The CP polytype is also considered one of the physical systems realizing the Kepler conjecture [2]. Since the significant changes in physical properties due to the intentional polytype formation have been reported in various fields of metallic and semiconductive systems [3-5], the material engineering demand for polytype phase control is diverse. The acquisition and deepening of scientific knowledge for the polytype phase control is therefore promising to lead to the creation of new functional materials. However, the scientific control of the polytype stacking order is still incomplete in the field of practical materials engineering. This is because the polytype control technology has many uncertainties since the formation mechanism of polytype is physically unsolved yet. Predicting polytype phase stability for a material has also been a long-standing issue in condensed matter physics and/or materials science. This situation stems from the fact that the atomistic interactions on polytype energetics might be surprisingly quite complex and delicate despite the simplicity of their geometrical structure. In the previous paper, we have presented an analytical theory on the total energetics for the CP polytypes based on the geometrical analysis for the correlation between interlayer interactions and interatomic ones in CP polytypes [6]. Our theoretical studies have shown that the long-range nature of interatomic interactions is an important factor for reproducing the static polytype energetics [6,7]. Based on our theory submitted [6], we have tried to construct an EAM (Embedded Atom Method) [8] type interatomic model for metallic La reproducing the theoretical polytype energetics. Our primary motivation for the present study is to grasp why long periodic polytype structures other than 2H and 3C ones appear as the stable phase under the crystal growth for the specific elemental systems. Therefore, we aim to develop the interatomic potential to reproduce the theoretical polytype energetics and to adopt it to the dynamical simulations for the long-periodic polytypes systems. The ground state for La is the 4H structure which is the simplest long-periodic polytype and La can exist in both 4H phase and the 3C phase under 583K [9]. Thus, it is possible to investigate the essential factors determining the polytype selection rule through the atomistic dynamics for metallic La. From our research so far, we have succeeded in constructing an EAM-type potential that mimics the energetics of metallic La with the 4H as the ground structure [10]. The following three procedures are found to be essentially important for deriving an interatomic interaction model with the 4H structure as the ground state; (i) The cutoff radius should be set to have a relatively longer distance (three or more interlayer distances in the 4H stacking structure). (ii) The equations of state (EOS) for the energetics of 2H, 3C, and 4H structures need to be reproduced as accurately as possible. (iii) The adiabatic potential along important transition paths between crystal structures such as the Bain path for the bcc-fcc transition must be exactly considered [11]. These procedures have made the interaction model describable for not only the energetics but also the lattice dynamics such as dynamical instability, which is known to be generally significant for the phase transition phenomena [11, 12]. The transferability of the associated potential and some results adapted in the molecular dynamics (MD) simulations will be also discussed in the presentation of the day. [1] A. L.Ortiz et al., J. AbstractDisturbances of social and affective processes are at the core of psychiatric disorders. Together with genetic predisposing factors, deprivation of social contact and dysfunctional relationships during development are some of the most important contributors to psychiatric disorders over the lifetime, while some developmental disorders manifest as aberrant social behavior early in life. That the cause of mental illness is rooted in the brain was long held as a truism, yet finding the causes for and neurobiological correlates of these conditions in the brain has proven and continues to be difficult (Venkatasubramanian G, Keshavan MS, Ann Neurosci 23:3–5. https://doi.org/10.1159/000443549, 2016). In clinical practice, psychiatric disorders are diagnosed based on categorical manuals, such as the DSM and ICD, which form a useful guide for clinical diagnosis and interventions. Yet, understanding the specific neural mechanisms leading to or characterizing distinct psychiatric conditions through this categorical approach has been slow (see, for example, Lynch CJ, Gunning FM, Liston C, Biol Psychiatry 88:83–94. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.biopsych.2020.01.012, 2020). Findings in the brain often do not seem to lend support to common mechanisms for the defined disorder categories. This is not particularly surprising because, in these diagnostic manuals, multiple combinations of symptoms can often lead to the same diagnosis, which is reflected in highly variable phenotypes of psychiatric disorders.

<em>Abstract</em>.—In this paper, we report fish resources in the upper reach of the Yangtze River from 2011 to 2012. The five sampling locations were Yibin, Hejiang, Mudong, Wanzhou, and Zigui. Yibin and Hejiang are the most upstream locations; Mudong is at the upper end of the Three Gorges Reservoir while Wanzhou and Zigui are in the inundated areas of the Three Gorges Reservoir. During our investigations, we collected 56, 94, 93, 67, and 64 fish species, respectively, from these five locations. Among them, 13, 21, 17, 4, and 4 are endemic to the upper Yangtze River. Catch per unit effort calculated with pooled data were 1,221.6–6,433.9 g/(d• boat). Because Yibin and Hejiang are still in the riverine state, endemic species remain. These areas are also in the national protected areas range. We suggest that commercial fishing should be banned in these areas to protect endemic fish species. However, for Wanzhou and Zigui, because they are in the inundated reservoir area, dominance has shifted from riverine to lacustrine species. Fisheries strategies should also be changed to target on different species, employ different fishing gears, and apply different management strategies.

The catalytic reduction of the alkene 1 gave the cis-fused product (not illustrated), by kinetic H₂ addition to the less congested face of the alkene. Ryan A. Shenvi of Scripps La Jolla found (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2014, 136, 1300) conditions for stepwise HAT, converting 1 to the thermodynamically-favored trans-fused ketone 2. Seth B. Herzon of Yale University devised (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2014, 136, 6884) a protocol for the reduction, mediated by 4, of the double bond of a haloalkene 3 to give the saturated halide 5. The Shenvi conditions also reduced a haloalkene to the saturated halide. Daniel J. Weix of the University of Rochester and Patrick L. Holland, also of Yale University, established (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2014, 136, 945) conditions for the kinetic isomerization of a terminal alkene 6 to the Z internal alkene 7. Christoforos G. Kokotos of the University of Athens showed (J. Org. Chem. 2014, 79, 4270) that the ketone 9, used catalytically, markedly accelerated the Payne epoxidation of 8 to 10. Note that Helena M. C. Ferraz of the Universidade of São Paulo reported (Tetrahedron Lett. 2000, 41, 5021) several years ago that alkene epoxidation was also easily carried out with DMDO generated in situ from acetone and oxone. Theodore A. Betley of Harvard University prepared (Chem. Sci. 2014, 5, 1526) the allylic amine 12 by reacting the alkene 11 with 1-azidoadamantane in the presence of an iron catalyst. Rodney A. Fernandes of the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay developed (J. Org. Chem. 2014, 79, 5787) efficient conditions for the Wacker oxidation of a terminal alkene 6 to the methyl ketone 13. Yong-Qiang Wang of Northwest University oxidized (Org. Lett. 2014, 16, 1610) the alkene 6 to the enone 14. Peili Teo of the National University of Singapore devised (Chem. Commun. 2014, 50, 2608) conditions for the Markovnikov hydration of the alkene 6 to the alcohol 15. Internal alkenes were inert under these conditions, but Yoshikazo Kitano of the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology effected (Synthesis 2014, 46, 1455) the Markovnikov amination (not illustrated) of more highly substituted alkenes.

When Lord Byron decided in May 1819 to publish his Gothic fragment, ‘Augustus Darvell’, Blackwood’s Edinburgh Magazine seemed to him the obvious choice (Byron 1973–94, vol. 6: 126).1 Though founded only eighteen months earlier, the magazine had quickly established itself as one of the leading periodical publications of the day, and one that specialised in terror. Led by its editor, William Blackwood, and key contributors such as John Wilson and J. G. Lockhart, Blackwood’s routinely used variously aestheticised forms of violence and fear as a method of engagement with a host of social, critical and cultural issues, and as a means of promulgating its virulent version of High Toryism, as seen most clearly in its bellicose attacks on Whig enemies such as the Edinburgh Review, and its literary assassinations of ‘Cockney School’ writers like John Keats and Leigh Hunt (Schoenfield 2013).

Abstract Human’s motion and its mechanisms had become interesting in the last years, where the medecine’s field search for rehabilitation methods for handicapped persons. Other fields, like sport sciences, professional or military world, search to distinguish profiles and ways to train them with specific purposes. Besides, recent findings in neuroscience try to describe these mechanisms from an organic point of view. Until now, different researchs had given a model about control motor that describes how the union between the senses’s information allows adaptable movements. One of this sense is the proprioception, the sense which has a quite big factor in the orientation and position of the body, its members and joints. For this reason, research for new strategies to explore proprioception and improve the theories of human motion could be done by three different vias. At first, the sense is analysed in a case-study where three groups of persons are compared in a controlled enviroment with three experimental tasks. The subjects belong to each group by the kind of sport they do: sedentary, normal sportsmen (e.g. athletics, swimming) and martial sportmen (e.g. karate, judo). They are compared thinking about the following hypothesis: “Martial Sportmen have a better proprioception than of the other groups’s subjects: It could be due to the type of exercises they do in their sports as empirically, a contact sportsman shows significantly superior motor skills to the members of the other two groups. The second via are records from encephalogram (EEG) while the experimental tasks are doing. These records are analised a posteriori with a set of processing algorithms to extract characteristics about brain’s activity of the proprioception and motion control. Finally , the study tries to integrate graphic tools to make easy to understand final scientific results which allow us to explore the brain activity of the subjects through easy interfaces (e.g. space-time events, activity intensity, connectivity, specific neural netwoks or anormal activity). In the future, this application could be a complement to assist doctors, researchers, sports center specialists and anyone who must improve the health and movements of handicapped persons. The rock shelter of the Roc-aux-Sorciers at Angles-sur-lAnglin (Vienne, France) is one of the archaeological reference sites for the Upper Paleolithic. The sculpted, painted and engraved frieze was gradually brought to light in its archaeological context by Susanne Cassou de Saint-Mathurin and Dorothy Garrod from 1949 onwards (Saint-Mathurin, Garrod, 1950). A wealth of archaeological material was discovered alongside the parietal art, comprising numerous works of portable art, tools made of animal bone, jewellery, etc. It was very rapidly observed that the portable art and the parietal art shared the same graphic and thematic conventions. For example, images of female bodies are rendered in high relief, in a monumental way, but also in the form of small statuettes. Our research has demonstrated the undeniable intra-site links between the portable art and the parietal art (Pinon, 2012). Here we propose to broaden this analysis within a well-identified culture of the Middle Magdalenian known as the Magdalenian of Lussac-Angles spearpoints. At the time of the discovery of the Magdalenian site of La Marche in 1937 (Vienne) (Lwoff, Pricard, 1940), some similarities had been identified between this site and that of Le Roc-aux-Sorciers, where the discoveries dated back to 1927 (Rousseau, 1933). These similarities are also perceptible in shared techniques (Chehmana, Beyries, 2010), as well as in the production of objects in hard organic materials such as the Lussac-Angles spearpoints (Pinon, 1988), the jewellery in fossil mammoth ivory (Dujardin, Pinon, 2000), the engraved horse incisors (Mazire, 2009) and the figurative art (Bourdier et al., 2016 Fuentes, 2016). We propose to further explore the links between these two sites through the analysis of the dynamic processes of reworking images. In particular we examine the engraved plaquettes of La Marche and the parietal art of Le Roc-aux-Sorciers to bring these links into perspective. This could shed light on some common ways of seeing the world in this Magdalenian group. Bourdier, C., Pinon, G., Bosselin, B. (2016). Modern broadband seismic data provides new insight into the Eocene-Miocene syn- to early post-rift sections of the East Java Sea (North Madura) and South Makassar Basin. Previous subsurface imaging suffered from shallow imaging obstacles and “hard” Eocene-Miocene carbonates, which render the interpretation of basement and overlying early syn-rift sections difficult. Thickness and distribution of these syn-sift sections differ significantly when comparing the North Madura area and the South Makassar Basin. Late syn- and early post-rift carbonate development also differs significantly in that a carbonate inter-reef blanket interrupted by pinnacle reef formation on top of a syn-rift section is present in North Madura. This contrasts with carbonate sections including bioherms that are controlled by the geometry of the underlying basement substrate, and which occur over extensive parts of the western South Makassar Basin. Early syn-rift including source rocks appear limited, requiring petroleum charge generation and migration from the central South Makassar Basin or the Central deep depression.

This paper is an introduction to the design solutions implemented within the EU-funded SIXTHSENSE project; a multidisciplinary innovation and research project with the overall goal of significantly improving the effectiveness and safety of first responder deployment in hazardous environments by optimizing on-site team coordination and mission execution. The project proposes an innovative multimodal monitoring system based on biochemical and physiological sensors data that allows the detection in real time of the physical and mental status deterioration of the first responders deployed in the field. The core of the SIXTHSENSE platform is a sensing garment with a closed loop tactile biofeedback [1], that allows first responders in hazardous situations to receive recommendations related to their physical and mental status, as well as operational indications from the remote command center. The concept of the platform developed within the project focus on the applications related to the deployment of firefighters [2] and mountain rescue services in extreme conditions [3]. The system is equipped with integrated electrochemical and electrophysiological sensors embedded in a garment that ensures intimate contact with the skin to accurately detect parameters related to physiological and mental strain. System also comprises an array of electro-tactile pads providing intuitive tactile feedback in hazardous situations. The garment also combine electronics for acquisition and fusion of sensor data, a microstimulator and controller for generation of spatio-temporally distributed electrical pulses, and communication modules, all embedded in a wearable device. The development of the system is performed iteratively, advancing in parallel hardware (sensors, electronics, electrodes), software (sensor data processing, calibration algorithms, electrotactile feedback control, command center dashboard), and research (data analytics, feedback representation, new telecommunications paradigms, etc .).The overall approach of the project is envisioned through core activities that are embedded in both applications. These are complemented with specific actions, like integrating the system with a specific sensor configuration into appropriate garments and using telecommunication channels best suited for the intended environment. These activities have been performed in three consecutive iterations, following a progressive processing approach to result in two demonstrator systems related to the applications, based on three main development iterations, named Alfa, Beta and Gamma each producing a prototype platform.[1]M. A previous PVP paper [1] identified suggested improvements to be made to ASME Code, Section XI, Nonmandatory Appendix G, “Fracture Toughness Criteria for Protection Against Failure” [2]. That paper also identified that the current version of Appendix G does not have any provisions for when the calculated operating stress (pseudo stress) exceeds the material yield strength. The treatment of stresses exceeding yield was included in earlier versions of Appendix G, but it was removed via Code Action ISI-94-40 in 1995. The specific reasons for removal of these provisions were not documented. In some Appendix G postulated flaw evaluations for pressure-temperature (P-T) limits, the calculated total linear-elastic (or pseudo) stress (i.e., including the primary stress due to pressure loading and thermal stress) may exceed the material yield stress. The ASME Section XI Working Group on Operating Plant Criteria (WGOPC) decided that this provision needed to be more fully considered, with appropriate benchmarking and possible adjustments to Appendix G made consistent with the current state of knowledge in elastic-plastic fracture mechanics (EPFM) methods. This is appropriate since the state of knowledge in EPFM has significantly advanced since the time the technical basis for Appendix G was established, as documented in Welding Research Council (WRC) Bulletin No. WRC-175, which was published in 1972. Furthermore, EPFM provides an improved method for evaluating the effects of high stresses. This paper describes the results of preliminary investigations of stresses exceeding the material yield stress in fracture toughness assessments associated with Appendix G. Also included in the technical evaluations presented are the temperature conditions for which upper shelf conditions are present and where EPFM methods are applicable.

15 populations of black medic (Medicago lupulina L.) of various ecological and geo-graphical origin were studied by the type of ontogenesis. It was found that 1 population is represented entirely by monocarp forms of plants, 7 populations have 20–60% of mono-carps. Wild alfalfa from the Moscow region and mutant forms created on its basis consist of 100% bicarpic plants. Bicarpic plants of varieties Georgia, Nordol, Rinata and selection number LH19-3, whose average dry matter productivity was 40.8–48.0 g/plant, are valuable as a source material for breeding of black medic. As sources of high seed prod-uctivity (10.0 and 10.3 g/plant), you can use bicarpic plants of the selection number VIK 256 and Georgia varieties, and high leafed (52.4 and 55.3%) — selection numbers DS-1 and VIK 61/94.

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is the staple food for Sri Lankans, and it serves as a key source of essential mineral elements. The variation of grain nutrient concentrations as affected by genetic factors (variety, grain color and age group) are not known, and those were tested in the current study. Total of 200 rice grain samples were collected using a stratified random sampling approach, representing all agro-climatic zones in Sri Lanka. Grain nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) concentrations were measured using Kjeldahl, Colorimetric, and General methods, respectively. Grain N P and K concentrations were significantly different among rice varieties (P<0.1). Grain N concentration varied between 4-19 mg g−1 . The highest grain N concentration was recorded in Bg 307 (14 mg g−1 ) while the lowest (i.e., < 10 mg g−1 ) in Bg 367, Bg 374, Bg 358, Bg 310 and Bg 379-2. Grain P concentration varied in the range 0.6- 1.7 mg g−1 . Grain P concentration in At 406 was the highest (1.6 mg g-1), followed by Bg 307, Bg 94-1, Bg 367 i.e., >1.3 mg g-1 and the lowest in Bg 403, Ld 365 and Bg 310 i.e., < 1 mg g−1 . Bg 357, Ld 365, Bg 406, Ld 368 and Bg 310 rice varieties showed significantly lower P concentration than other varieties (P<0.1) Grain N, P and K concentrations were similar among different age classes of rice varieties (P>0.05). Moreover, grain N and P concentrations between the red and white grain varieties were similar (P>0.05). However, varieties with white color grains had higher K concentration than in red rice varieties. There was a significant correlation between grain P and K concentrations (r =0.496, P<0.001). This information would be useful when selecting rice varieties with high and low nutritional qualities and implementing sustainable nutrient management practices in rice-based cropping systems in Sri Lanka. Abstract We present a proof of concept demonstration of solar thermochemical energy storage on a multiple year time scale. We designed and fabricated a 4-kW solar rotary drum reactor to carry out the solar-driven charging step of solar thermochemical storage via metal oxide reduction-oxidation cycles. During the summer of 2019, the solar reactor was operated in the Valparaiso University solar furnace to effect the reduction of sub-millimeter cobalt oxide particles in air at approximately 1000°C. A particle collection system cooled the reduced particles rapidly enough to maintain conversions of 84–94% for feed rates of 2.9–60.8 g min−1. The solar to chemical storage efficiency, defined as the enthalpy of the reduction reaction at 1000°C divided by the solar energy input, reached 20% for an input solar flux of 1400 kW m−2 and a cobalt oxide feed rate of 60.8 g min−1. Samples of the reduced cobalt oxide particles were stored in vials in air at room temperature for more than three years. The stored solar energy was released by reoxidizing samples in air in a benchtop reactor. Measurements of the oxygen uptake by the reduced metal oxide confirm its promise as a medium to store and dispatch solar energy over long durations.
