ABSTRACT We and others have shown that infection of dendritic cells with murine cytomegalovirus (MCMV) leads to severe functional impairment of these antigen-presenting cells (D. M. Andrews, C. E. Andoniou, F. Granucci, P. Ricciardi-Castagnoli, and M. A. Degli-Esposti, Nat. Immunol. 2:1077-1084, 2001; S. Mathys, T. Schroeder, J. Ellwart, U. H. Koszinowski, M. Messerle, and U. Just, J. Infect. Dis. 187:988-999, 2003). Phenotypically, reduced surface expression of costimulatory molecules and major histocompatibility complex molecules was detected. In order to identify the molecular basis for the observed effects, we generated MCMV mutants with large deletions of nonessential genes. The study was facilitated by the finding that a monocyte-macrophage cell line displayed similar phenotypic alterations after MCMV infection. By analyzing the expression of cell surface molecules on infected cells, we identified a mutant virus which is no longer able to downmodulate the expression of the costimulatory molecule CD86. Additional mutants with smaller deletions allowed us to pin down the responsible gene to a certain genomic region. RNA analysis led to the identification of the spliced gene m147.5, encoding a protein with 145 amino acids. Experiments with an m147.5 mutant revealed that the protein affects CD86 expression only, suggesting that additional MCMV genes are responsible for downmodulation of the other surface molecules. Identification of viral gene products interfering with functionally important proteins of antigen-presenting cells will provide the basis to dissect the complex interaction of CMV with these important cells and to evaluate the biological importance of these viral genes in vivo.

The aim of this paper was to identify which psycholinguistic variables are better predictors of performance for healthy participants in a picture naming task and in a picture categorization task. A correlation analysis and a Path analysis were carried out. The correlation analysis showed that naming accuracy and naming latency are significant and positively correlated with lexical frequency and conceptual familiarity variables, whereas they are negatively correlated with H index. Reaction times in the categorization task were negatively correlated with lexical frequency and conceptual familiarity variables and positively correlated with visual complexity variable. The Path analysis showed that subjective lexical frequency and H index are the better predictors for picture naming task. In picture categorization task, for reaction times, the better predictor variables were subjective lexical frequency, conceptual familiarity and visual complexity. The pressure drop and heat transfer characteristics of a single-phase micropin-fin heat sink were investigated experimentally. Fabricated from 110 copper, the heat sink contained an array of 1950 staggered square micropin fins with 200×200μm2 cross section by 670μm height. The ratios of longitudinal pitch and transverse pitch to pin-fin equivalent diameter are equal to 2. De-ionized water was employed as the cooling liquid. A coolant inlet temperature of 25°C, and two heat flux levels, qeff″=50W∕cm2 and qeff″=100W∕cm2, defined relative to the platform area of the heat sink, were tested. The inlet Reynolds number ranged from 93 to 634 for qeff″=50W∕cm2, and from 127 to 634 for qeff″=100W∕cm2. The measured pressure drop and temperature distribution were used to evaluate average friction factor and local averaged heat transfer coefficient/Nusselt number. Predictions of the previous friction factor and heat transfer correlations that were developed for low Reynolds number (Re<1000) single-phase flow in short pin-fin arrays were compared to the present micropin-fin data. Moores and Joshi’s friction factor correlation (2003, “Effect of Tip Clearance on the Thermal and Hydrodynamic Performance of a Shrouded Pin Fin Array,” ASME J. Heat Transfer, 125, pp. 999–1006) was the only one that provided acceptable predictions. Predictions from the other friction factor and heat transfer correlations were significantly different from the experimental data collected in this study. These findings point to the need for further fundamental study of single-phase thermal/fluid transport process in micropin-fin arrays for electronic cooling applications.

Abstract Background: AHSCT is standard therapy for recurrent or progressive, yet chemosensitive lymphoma, both non-Hodgkin’s (NHL) and Hodgkin’s (HL). However, relapse is frequent, and augmentation of existing conditioning regimens (e.g. BEAM) is one approach to reducing these relapses. Since BEAM has considerable regimen related toxicity (RRT), methods to allow safe dose augmentation are needed. Prior experience (BBMT2004;10(7): 473–83) indicates that AF may be useful in protecting vs RRT produced by high-dose MEL used alone; thus, we postulated a cytoprotective effect in this situation as well. Goals: Determine the maximum tolerated dose (MTD) of escalated dose MEL in BEAM, using AF and AHSCT, in a classical Phase I trial. Methods: We utilized AF 740mg/m2 daily before and during BEAM (i.e., −7 to −1) with MEL, starting at 140 mg/m2 (level A) and escalating by 20 mg/m2 per 4 - pt. cohorts. AHSCT and other supportive care measures were routine. (Thiotepa was used in patients with a history or at high risk of central nervous system (CNS) disease.) The Berman (JCO1989; 7(9): 1288–94) scale of grading RRT was used to determine the MTD in 4- pt. cohorts; those who died of non-RRT causes were deemed non-evaluable and replaced. Results: Between 07/30/2003 and 06/28/2006, we entered 18 patients (NHL13 /HL 5), med age 60 (range 23 to 72) years. All had progressed or relapsed; 12 were chemosensitive. To date, 6 patients at level A (140mg/m2), 4 patients at B (160mg/m2), 5 patients at C (180mg/m2) and 3 patients at D (200mg/m2) have been evaluated >D +30. Three patients (2 at level A and 1 at level C) were non-evaluable due to: Removal (pt’s request) during BEAM, Death due to CNS bleeding; and MI (with known pre-existing coronary artery disease), and were replaced. None of the remaining 15 had Bearman RRT >II; 2 had none and 10 had only grade I RRT. All (save one case of hepatic II RRT) were stomatitis and/or gastrointestinal. All had CD34+ > 2.0 x 10e6/kg and prompt hematopoietic reconstitution: ANC >0.5 and platelets >20K at median D+ 11 (range +9 to +12) and D+ 12 (range +9 to +24), respectively. No late (i.e., >D+ 30) hematologic or non-hematologic toxicities were noted. At present, 11 patients are alive, 7 in CR, one too early to evaluate at median D+ 469, range + 27 to 999. Conversely, 7 are dead, due to relapse (5), MI (one), and CNS bleeding (1). Responses occurred at all dose levels. In evaluable patients < CR before AHSCT, 9/14 achieved CR (mostly confirmed by imaging studies, notably PET scans) by D +100; 6 remain in CR at median D +593, range +36 to +614, including one patient who had a “consolidation” allogeneic HSCT. Another patient in CR at AHSCT remains in CR at D +514. Conclusion: Although not strictly proven, we believe the use of AF allows the safe use of escalated doses of MEL in the BEAM regimen >/= 180mg/m2. Dose escalation will continue until a MTD is found.

Исследование внутривидовой изменчивости трех функциональных признаков листьев: площади – LA, сухой массы – LDW и удельной площади – SLA показало их взаимообусловленность и зависимость значений признаков от благопритяности условий местообитания и антропогенной нагрузки. Анализ полученных данных исследования показал, что универсальные информационные показатели LA и LDW являются низкими в неблагоприятных и низкопродуктивных местообитаниях и более высокими при изобилии ресурсов в более продуктивных условиях существования. Полученные значения SLA видов растений, произрастающих в сообществах интенсивно эксплуатируемых пастбищ, часто имеют более высокие значения. Возможно, адаптация в условиях постоянного изъятия биомассы на сенокосах и пастбищах идет в первую очередь через сокращение массы листьев при сохранении листовой поверхности. В сообществах мезофитных лугов в условиях заповедного режима, характеризующихся высокой продуктивностью, показатели функциональных признаков всех исследованных видов выше по сравнению с менее продуктивными лугами, существующими в условиях дефицита увлажнения. Пастбищные нагрузки, оказывающие отрицательное воздействие на луговые пастбищные травостои, вызывают не только сокращение запасов общей биомассы лугового сообщества, но и изменение индивидуальных функциональных признаков видов растений, их образующих. ABSTRACT We have previously shown that vaccination with a vaccine based on the recombinant N-terminal domain of Als1p (rAls1p-N) protected BALB/c mice against disseminated infection caused by a single strain of Candida albicans (A. S. Ibrahim, B. J. Spellberg, V. Avenissian, Y. Fu, S. G. Filler, and J. E. Edwards, Jr., Infect. Immun. 73:999-1005, 2005, and B. J. Spellberg, A. S. Ibrahim, V. Avenissian, S. G. Filler, C. Myers, Y. Fu, and J. E. Edwards, Jr., Infect. Immun. 73:6191-6193, 2005). Here we show that the rAls1p-N vaccine also improves survival of outbred mice from disseminated candidiasis and that it is active against multiple virulent strains of C. albicans and non-C. albicans spp.

The achievement of family well - being is an aspiration of all families including families of migrant workers, to achieve the well - being of one of the ways that the families of migrant workers with the departure of the wife work as domestic servants in various countries. The purpose of this study was to analyze social capital, economic coping, sress symptom’s husband and family subjektive well - being of women migrant workers. This research use cross sectional studies. The location was chosen purposively in Tanggeung Village, Pagermaneuh Village, Margaluyu Village, Karangtengah Village, Tanggeung District and Pasirdalam Village Kadupandak District, Cianjur, West Java, Indonesia. Seventy five families were selected purposively among the families of women migrant workers. The finding indicates that social capital is in the moderate category, the coping economy is in the moderate category, the sress symptom’s husband is in the low category and the family well-being is in the low category. Finding in this study family subjective well-being is influenced by income per capita, sress symptom’s husband and economic coping. Keywords: economic coping, family subjective well-being, social capital, stress symptom Abstrak Kesejahteraan keluarga merupakan sesuatu yang ingin dicapai seluruh keluarga, termasuk keluarga Tenaga Kerja Wanita (TKW), untuk mencapai kesejahteraan tersebut salah satu cara yang dilakukan oleh keluarga TKW adalah mengirim istri sebagai pembantu rumah tangga di berbagai negara. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisis modal sosial, coping ekonomi, gejala stres suami, dan kesejahteraan subjektif keluarga TKW. Penelitian ini menggunakan cross sectional studies. Lokasi dipilih dengan metode purposive di Provinsi Jawa Barat, Kabupaten Cianjur, Kecamatan Tanggeung, Desa Pagermaneuh, Desa Marguluyu, Desa Karangtengah, Desa Tanggeung, Kecamatan Kadupandak, Desa Pasirdalam. Jumlah sampel sebanyak 75 keluarga TKW dengan metode purposive sampling. Penelitian ini menemukan modal sosial berada pada kategori sedang, coping ekonomi berada pada kategori sedang, gelaja stres suami berada pada kategori rendah, dan kesejahteraan subjektif berada pada kategori rendah. Penelitian ini juga menemukan kesejahteraan keluarga berpengaruh terhadap pendapatan perkapita, gelaja stres suami, dan coping ekonomi. Practitioners in many domains–e.g., clinical psychologists, college instructors, researchers–collect written responses from clients. A well-developed method that has been applied to texts from sources like these is the computer application Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC). LIWC uses the words in texts as cues to a person’s thought processes, emotional states, intentions, and motivations. In the present study, we adopt analytic principles from LIWC and develop and test an alternative method of text analysis using naïve Bayes methods. The Book of Hours of Louis De Roucy was a magnificent manuscript, illuminated by a pupil of the so-called Master of the Troyes Missal. In the inauspicious date of 2009, like many others, the Book of Hours of Louis De Roucy was also the victim of an act of biblioclasm in Germany. Professor Carla Rossi, thanks to the WayBack Recovery(c) method, has found 99% of the manuscript’s iconographic cycle and over a hundred text leaves, thus digitally reconstructing the book and providing a virtual facsimile edition. In the Office of the Dead’s first lesson, the text is extremely rare and, according to K. Ottosen, is only found in sources from Châlons-en-Champagne. This non-negligible detail, alongside the textual reconstruction of other prayers in the final section of the manuscript, allows for the tracing of its production as well as its first owner in a Champenois environment. This geographical location gains support (in che senso?) from the All Saints miniature, depicting St Stephen in the foreground, since Stephen himself is infact the patron saint of the cathedral of Châlons-en-Champagne. In at least six initials appears a heraldic shield, made of a lion rampant azure, langued and armed gules. In the 15th century this shield belonged to Jean VII, Count de Roucy-Pierrepont and Sire de Montmirail, in accordance with the wishes of his mother Jeanne. As a matter of fact, in 1438 she signed a document in which she undertook to leave all her possessions to her son, on condition that the latter used her father’s (Jean VI, Count de Braine and de Roucy-Pierrepont, died at Azincourt in 1415) heraldic coat of arms. Jean VII, in turn, without any legitimate heirs, left his title as well as his heraldic coat of arms to Louis (1465-1536), his illegitimate son from the relationship with Isabelle de Montchâlons. The teenage male patron depicted on folio 191v, kneeling before the Virgin in a full-page miniature to the 'O intemerata' prayer, is likely Louis himself. The obsessive presence of the De Roucy coat of arms in the manuscript may be explained by the de facto legitimisation of the young aristocrat.

Abstract Spatial conservation planning methodologies have traditionally been implemented under the assumption that species distributions change relatively slowly, unless they are directly affected by human activities. However, over the past 100 years, Earth’s climate has become warmer and precipitation regimes have changed. For example, from 1850–99 2001–05, global temperatures increased 0.76°C with warming in the past 50 years being nearly twice that for the last 100 years (IPCC 2007). Climate projections forecast even greater changes in the century to come, with impacts on biodiversity being expected to parallel changes in the climate (e.g. Thomas et al. 2004). Interactions of climate and land-use changes are only likely to compound the individual effects of climate change on biodiversity (e.g. Jetz et al. 2007; Pyke and Andelman 2007; Araújo et al. 2008). Environmental changes challenge the conventional approach to conservation planning, because they can alter the quantity, quality, and distribution of suitable areas for many species (e.g. Peters and Darling 1985; Hannah et al. 2002b). Some species will persist only if they can colonize new areas, although in some cases their dispersal abilities might be very limited and dependent on the existence of suitable ‘stepping stones’ between protected areas. In other cases, species might persist in areas where they can retain parts of their former ranges (i.e. ‘range retention areas’); the question is whether such range retention areas and/or stepping stones for species dispersal have been captured by existing conservation areas and, if not, whether there are tools available for helping the identification of such critical areas for biodiversity conservation in a changing world.

Chem. 2009, 74, 7203) that pyrimidines such as 4, readily prepared from the corresponding phenol, underwent smooth Pd-catalyzed ortho acetoxylation. Trond Vidar Hansen of the University of Oslo observed (Tetrahedron Lett. 2009, 50, 6339) that simple electrophilic formylation of phenols such as 6 also proceeded with high ortho selectivity. Kyung Woon Jung of the University of Southern California optimized (J. Org. Chem. 2009, 74, 6231) the Rh catalyst for ortho C-H insertion, converting 8 into 9. Jin-Quan Yu of Scripps/La Jolla devised (Science 2010, 327, 315) a protocol for carboxy-directed catalytic ortho palladation that allowed subsequent Heck coupling, transforming 10 into 11. Norikazu Miyoshi of the University of Tokushima established (Chem. Lett. 2009, 38, 996) that in situ generated strontium alkyls added 1,6 to benzoic acid 13, to give, after mild oxidative workup, the 4-alkyl benzoic acid 15. Amin Zarei of Islamic Azad University showed (Tetrahedron Lett. 2009, 50, 4443) that their previously developed protocol for preparing stable diazonium silica sulfates could be extended to the preparation of an aryl azide such as 17. Stephen L. Buchwald of MIT developed (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2009, 131, 12898) a Pd-mediated protocol for the conversion of aryl chlorides to the corresponding nitro aromatics. Virgil Percec of the University of Pennsylvania has also reported (Organic Lett. 2009, 11, 4974) the conversion of an aryl chloride to the borane, and Guy C. Lloyd-Jones has described (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2009, 48, 7612) the conversion of phenols to the corresponding thiols. Kwang Ho Song of Korea University and Sunwoo Lee of Chonnam National University demonstrated (J. Org. Chem. 2009, 74, 6358) that the Ni-mediated homologation of aryl halides worked with a variety of primary and secondary formamides. Kwangyong Park of Chung-Ang University observed (J. Org. Chem. 2009, 74, 9566) that Ni catalysts also mediated the coupling of Grignard reagents with the tosylate 22 not in the usual way but with the C-S bond to give 23.

This chapter concerns the practice and procedure of derivative claims, both at common law and under the Companies Act 2006. It considers the control of litigation in the name of the company and then analyses the differences between common law and statutory derivative claims. It goes on to discuss the relevant statutory provisions, rules, principles and practice directions that apply to all stages of a derivative claim, including pre-action conduct, the form of (and parties to) a derivative claim, the commencement of proceedings, the two stages of the application for permission to continue a derivative claim, the role of the company at the permission stage (and subsequently), costs indemnity orders, conditional fees, and procedure generally. This chapter also explores the relationship between a personal claim and a derivative claim, the use of section 996(2)(c) of the Companies Act 2006 to bring a derivative claim, how much and in what circumstances the statutory derivative claim is likely to be used, and whether derivative claims can be brought where the company is in receivership or liquidation. Finally, it addresses derivative claims in respect of foreign companies and multiple derivative claims.

(+)-Hirsutellone B 3, isolated from the insect pathogenic fungus Hirsutella nivea BCC 2594, shows good activity (MIC = 0.78 μg/mL) against Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Approaching the synthesis of 3, K. C. Nicolaou of Scripps/La Jolla envisioned and reduced to practice (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2009, 49, 6870) a spectacular tandem intramolecular epoxide opening: internal Diels-Alder cyclization (1 2) that established all three of the carbocyclic rings of 3 with the proper relative and absolute configuration. The construction of 1 began with commercial ( R) -(+)-citronellal 4. Wittig homologation established the ( Z )-iodide 5. Selective ozonolysis followed by condensation with the phosphorane 7 set the stage for Jørgensen-Córdova (Tetrahedron Lett. 2006, 47, 99) epoxidation with H2O2 and a catalytic amount of the Hayashi catalyst 9. Condensation of 10 with the phosphorane 11 followed by Cu-catalyzed coupling of 12 with the organostannane 13 completed the assembly of 1. This approach underscores the strategic advantages of the Jørgensen-Córdova epoxidation over the Sharpless protocol. It is not necessary to reduce the aldehyde to the allyic alcohol, then reoxidize. Furthermore, the Jørgensen-Córdova epoxidation, using catalytic 9, is operationally easier than the Sharpless procedure, which often uses stoichiometric amounts of tartrate ester. The cyclization of 1 proceeded by way of 13, with the newly formed stereogenic center having the diene equatorial on the cyclohexane. Endo cycloaddition catalyzed by the Lewis acid in the solution then gave 2. The facility with which the cyclization of 13 set both the substituents and the stereogenic centers of 2 raises the possibility that the biosynthesis might also follow such an internal [4 + 2] cycloaddition. To complete the synthesis of 3, it was necessary to construct the strained paracyclophane. The authors took advantage of the facile cyclization of the thiolate liberated from 18, then installed the ring-contracted alkene with a Ramburg-Bäcklund rearrangement of 19. They completed the synthesis of (+)-hirsutellone B 3 by exposing the ketone 21 to NH3 in CH3OH/H2O.

<EM>ABSTRACT. </EM>Whirling disease occurs in salmonid fishes infected by the myxosporean parasite <em>Myxobolus cerebralis</em>. This review summarizes the literature regarding control and management of the disease. Suggested methods for killing the myxospore stage include thorough drying, heating for 10 min at 90°C, calcium hydroxide at more than 0.5% for 24 h, and calcium oxide or KOH at more than 0.25% for 24 h. Chlorine was also effective at 1600 ppm in 24-h exposure or 5,000 ppm in a 10-min exposure. Roccal (alkyl dimethylbenzylammonium chloride) at more than 200 ppm active ingredient was also effective. Calcium cyanide at 4,000 kg/ha has been used effectively for control in infected ponds. Treating incoming water with 2537 Å of ultraviolet (UV) light at dosages greater than or equal to 35,000 microwatt-sec/cm² was effective in preventing infection of rainbow trout fry. Filtration of water through a 25 µm commercial filter cartridge did not reduce or eliminate the disease, but sand-charcoal filters have been used successfully in France. Prophylactic treatment of incoming water with 0.5 ppm chlorine for 2 h once a week over a 4 month period reduced infection by 63–73%. Electrical charges of 1–3 kV pulsed for 1–25 times at 99 µsec per pulse have killed a high proportion of the triactinomyxon stage. Triactinomyxons were also inactivated by 260 ppm chlorine as sodium hypochlorite, 10% hydrogen peroxide for 10 min, or 50% povidone-iodine for 10 min. Various drugs have been tested, some of which reduced the level of infection but failed to eliminate the parasite. Management strategies to control the disease include control of the worm host and its habitat, stocking larger fish into infected waters, not stocking infected fish, education, enforcement of disease regulations, and stocking less susceptible species.

Kawasaki Heavy Industries launched the L20A gas turbine, rated at 18MW, in 2001. The design philosophy adopted for the turbine includes a high efficiency transonic axial-flow compressor with eight can-type combustors and a high turbine inlet temperature of 1250 Deg C. This results in a thermal efficiency of 35%, an electric efficiency of 50% for combined cycle power plants and an overall thermal efficiency of 81% for cogeneration systems. In addition, the NOx emissions from the combustor are lower than 23 ppm and the engine has a long service life. These features permit long-term continuous operations under various environmental limitations. Details are presented in 2002-GT-30255.(1) The first commercial unit has been in operation as a daily start and stop cogeneration plant in Kawasaki’s Akashi Works in Japan since October 2001. Accumulated operation hours are 5500 hours and 410 starts as of March 2004. Reliability higher than 99% has been demonstrated during this period. During the shop test and the commercial operation, some additional improvements have been developed for the compressor, turbine and combustor.

RESUMO A sociedade atual vive em um contexto tumultuoso, sendo comum as pessoas viverem de forma mais estressadas, se alimentando mal e convivendo cada vez menos com as pessoas, perdendo oportunidades de fazer e manter relacionamentos pessoais. Como este estilo de vida está saturado, gerando problemas de saúde aos indivíduos, existem diversos estudos que comprovam a tendência de que as pessoas buscarão um melhor aproveitamento do seu tempo, com um maior contato com a natureza, dando valor ao seu próprio bem-estar, prestando mais atenção no que consome e em como consome, assim como a valorização do prazer de estar em um meio social. Nesse contexto, o objetivo deste trabalho é contribuir por meio da visão sistêmica e do design, o incentivo e a prática da filosofia Slow Food, e dessa forma, promover a preocupação com uma saudável forma de alimentação e a ação colaborativa entre as pessoas, em que um indivíduo possa cooperar com o outro, resgatando o convívio e socialização. Assim, pretende-se atuar em pequenas unidades urbanas externas, como prédios, condomínios, praças e avenidas com intuito de criação de um artefato que motive a prática dessa filosofia, assim como impulsione também as práticas colaborativas nestes locais, buscando a integração social e desenvolvimento econômico e ambiental, atendendo os princípios da sustentabilidade e o desenvolvimento local. O método de pesquisa usado é descritivo, em que se observou e analisou as situações e relações dos indivíduos, tanto de forma individual quanto as relações em sociedade. Os instrumentos escolhidos para coleta de dados foram o questionário, entrevistas e observações abertas, feitas informalmente ao decorrer das entrevistas. Neste trabalho integrou-se dois métodos de projeto, a ferramenta HCD/IDEO (Human Centered Design - Design Centrado no Ser Humano), usado como base, com técnicas para o entendimento dos desejos e necessidades da comunidade estudada e o Guia de projeto NASDesign/UFSC (Núcleo de Abordagem Sistêmica do Design/Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina), dividido em três fases: Sentir, Agir e Realizar, como complementação. Ao final, conclui-se que o modelo físico do produto proposto atende uma lista de requisitos divididos em três grande grupo: requisitos de produto, referentes à forma, materiais e texturas do objeto; requisitos do usuário, referente a necessidade entendida a partir do tipo de ambiente em que o produto está, e de como ele está sendo usado e aos requisitos do contexto de uso, que consiste nas necessidades do usuário observado durante a pesquisa.Palavras Chaves: design de produto, slow food, sustentabilidade. A high throughput microfluidic system including a 96 continuous flow (CF) thermal reactors and a multi-zone thermal control system was designed and fabricated. An infrared camera (IR) was used to analyze and verify the uniformity of the temperature distribution. Temperature variations from the nominal values were ±2°C in the denaturation zone and ±1°C in the renaturation and extension zones. Six different DNA fragments, with lengths ranging from 99 bp to 997 bp, were obtained from a λ-DNA template, each with a distinct renaturation temperature. As an initial demonstration of the biochemical performance of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) reactor arrays, a column device comprised of eight 25-cycle CFPCRs was used to amplify identical PCR cocktails for each DNA fragment simultaneously at a flow velocity of 2 mm/s. All but the 997 bp were successfully amplified. Yields for the 99 bp fragment varied from 15%–36% of the amplicon on block thermal cycler. In a second experiment, a row device composed of six 25-cycle CFPCRs was used to successfully, simultaneously amplify cocktails for all six DNA fragment lengths at a flow velocity of 1 mm/s in parallel. Each device in the row had a distinct renaturation temperature to match the DNA fragment length. The parallel thermal arrays can be used in modular systems including both PCR for amplification and, for example, ligase detection reaction (LDR) for mutation detection.

Operating NPPs license extension activities in Russia produced strong demand for safety improvement of plants build according to earlier standards. Installation of additional supports as pipe whip restraints is one of requirement in acting regulatory documentation which should be followed or compensated by appropriate measures like Leak Before Break (LBB) analyses and improvement of In-Service Inspection (ISI) and Leak Detecting System (LDS). Basic document for LBB concept application to Russian NPP piping is RD 95 10547-99. Its requirements correspond to classical LBB principles used in many countries in Europe, USA and Japan. In many real cases requirements of RD 95 10547-99 could not be applied to safety important NPP piping systems due to the presence of specific features of operational degradation due to some corrosion mechanisms: for example, erosion-corrosion (E-C) for carbon steel piping and intergranular stress corrosion cracking (IGSSC) for heat affected zones of austenitic piping weldments. For special case of RBMK piping with outer diameter 325 mm (potentially susceptible to IGSCC) special Break Preclusion Concept has been developed in Russia after IAEA Extrabudgetary Program in 2000–2002. Contrary to LBB Concept demanding for all four basic principles to be completely fulfilled BP Concept accepts some principles to be fulfilled in a balanced way with demonstration of monitored degradation effectively achieved in operation. Special BP Concept is being developed now to support integrity assessment of RBMK carbon steel steam and feed water piping potentially susceptible to E-C which requires another set of measures to demonstrate principle of controlled degradation in operation then in case of austenitic steel piping. General scheme of piping integrity analyses according to LBB and BP Concepts is discussed and examples of specific approaches to achieve controlled degradation are illustrated in paper. As result of LBB and BP Concepts application it is possible to substantiate reject of additional piping whip restraints implementation on-site. Examples of similar safety methodology development in other countries have been reported at IAEA Specialists Meeting on LBB in Kiev, Ukraine in November 2006.

In 2008, following the general French plan for nuclear waste management, Électricité de France attempted to find for irradiated graphite an alternative solution to direct storage at the low-activity long-life storage center in France managed by the national agency for wastes (ANDRA). EDF management requested that its engineering arm, EDF CIDEN, study the graphite treatment alternatives to direct storage. In mid-2008, this study revealed the potential advantage for EDF to use a steam reforming process known as THermal Organic Reduction, “THOR” (owned by Studsvik, Inc., USA), to treat or destroy the graphite matrix and limit the quantity of secondary waste to be stored. In late 2009, EDF began a test program with Studsvik to determine if the THOR steam reforming process could be used to destroy the graphite. The program also sought to determine if the graphite could be treated to release the bulk of activity while minimizing the gasification of the bulk mass of the graphite. In October 2009, tests with non-irradiated graphite were completed and demonstrated destruction of a graphite matrix by the THOR process at satisfactory rates. After gasifying the graphite, focus shifted to the effect of roasting graphite at high temperatures in inert gases with low concentrations of oxidizing gases to preferentially remove volatile radionuclides while minimizing the graphite mass loss to 5%. A radioactive graphite sleeve was imported from France to the US for these tests. Completed in April 2010, ‘Phase I’ of testing showed that the process removed >99% of H-3 and 46% of C-14 with <6% mass loss. Completed in September 2011, ‘Phase II’ testing achieved increased removals as high as 80% C-14. During Phase II, it was also discovered that roasting in a reducing atmosphere helped to limit the oxidation of the graphite. Future work seeks to explore the effects of reducing gases to limit the bulk oxidation of graphite. If the graphite could be decontaminated of long-lived radionuclides up to 95% for C-14 while minimizing mass loss to <5%, this would minimize the volume of any secondary waste streams and potentially lower the waste class of the larger bulk of graphite. Alternatively, if up to 95% decontamination of C-14 is achieved, the graphite may be completely gasified which could result in lower disposal volumes.

Copper dissolution and intermetallic compound (IMC) formation during reflow of soldered joints are critical issues for joint reliability. Most of studies in the literature aimed at the coarsening and growth of the IMC layer of the soldered joints during service and only limited data is available during soldering process. This is particularly true for lead-free solders, which have attracted the attention of researchers just recently. This paper presents an experimental study of copper dissolution and IMC growth of lead-free solders during the reflow process. Solder buttons of either Sn or Sn-3.5wt%Ag were reflowed over a copper (99.9% pure) substrate for various reflow time periods ranging from 10 seconds to 10 minutes. Four reflow temperatures were selected, 232°C, 250°C, 275°C and 300°C for pure tin and 221°C, 250°C, 275°C and 300°C for Sn-3.5%Ag respectively. The average thickness of the grown IMC layer and the amount of copper dissolved during reflow were determined using the images obtained from the metallurgical microscope. The kinetics of IMC growth and Cu dissolution were then quantified and the estimated kinetics parameters can be used to determine the copper dissolution and IMC layer thickness during reflow soldering.

In this study a Polyimide film exposed to ultraviolet laser forms porous graphene foam. Laser-Induced Graphene Foam (LIGF) so produced absorbs >99% solar spectrum, reaching 90.4°C in <60 sec at 1kW/m2 irradiation.

We demonstrate via modeling and experiments the feasibility of O-band transmission over ultra-low loss G.654.C fiber in cabled conditions. Lab experiments with a 100G O-band transceiver show no penalty and transmission up to 99 km.

This paper presents an experimental study of copper dissolution in molten tin and tin-silver (Sn-Ag) solders and the formation and presence of the Cu-Sn intermetallic compound at solder/copper interfaces. During the experiments, copper (99.9% pure) samples, coated with a RMA flux, were dipped vertically in a molten solder for different time periods ranging from 5 seconds to 10 minutes. The molten solder was maintained at temperatures of 232°C, 250°C and 300°C for pure tin and 221°C, 250°C, and 300°C for Sn-3.5%Ag respectively. The samples were then cut, cleaned and cold mounted in epoxy at ambient temperature. Mechanical grinding, finish polishing, etching, and optical metallographic procedures were utilized for examining the microstructures of the polished and etched samples. The average thickness of the intermetallic compound and the amount of copper dissolved was determined. Experimental results indicate the temperature of molten solder to control the rate of dissolution of copper and the formation and presence of intermetallic compounds at the interfaces. At a given temperature of the solder temperature, the rate of dissolution of copper in the solder revealed a rising trend with an increase in dwell time of copper in the solder. For short contact time periods, the dissolution rate is low and the thickness of the intermetallic compound is small. With an increase in dwell time, the dissolution rate of copper rapidly increases and eventually reaches a plateau. Initiation of dissolution of copper causes a layer of the Sn-Cu intermetallic compound to form around the copper substrate. This in turn prevents direct contact of the copper substrate with the molten solder. The rate of formation of the layer of intermetallic compound reveals a similar trend. Based on experimental results, the kinetic parameters involved in governing the growth of the intermetallic were determined for the two solders. The parameters can be used to estimate the kinetics of copper dissolution and intermetallic compound formation during soldering.

Subcritical (hot/liquid) water was used in a simple static (non-flowing) vessel to treat three soils from former defense sites which were contaminated with the explosives TNT (12 wt.%), or RDX (0.62 wt.%) and HMX (0.16 wt. %). Significant degradation of RDX began at 100 C, and at 125 C for TNT and HMX, with the bulk of the undergraded explosives remaining in the soil rather than in the water phase. Based on HPLC/UV analysis, intermediate degradation products formed, but quickly degraded at < 250 C. Remediations performed using a generator-powered mobile pilot-scale unit (4 to 6 kg soil) with 4-L of water at 275 C for 1 h of real soils resulted in > 99.9% destrcution of TNT and HMX, and > 99.5% desstruction of RDX. None of the mutagenic nitroso derivatives of RDX and HMX were formed. “Microtox” acute toxicity tests with Vibrio fischeri showed no significant (compared to background) residual toxicity in either the process wastewaters or leachates from the treated soils. The operation is closed-loop (no air or water emissions), and process water can be recycled without treatment. Initial cost analysis indicates that the process should be competitive with other approaches such as bioremediation.
