Resumo:

Purpose Although new drugs were approved during the 1990s for the treatment of metastatic breast cancer, it is not clear whether their use has changed the outcome of patients in daily practice. This study sought to determine whether survival has improved over time for breast cancer patients who had metastases at diagnosis. Patients and Methods A total of 724 patients have been treated in three French cancer centers for an initially metastatic breast cancer between 1987 and 2000; 343 were diagnosed between 1987 and 1993, and 381 were diagnosed between 1994 and 2000. Tumor characteristics, treatments, and outcomes of these patients were compared by χ2 test, log-rank test, and Cox regression analysis. Results Characteristics were not different between the patients diagnosed from 1987 to 1993 and those diagnosed from 1994 to 2000. Ten percent of patients treated from 1987 to 1994 and 58% of patients treated from 1994 to 2000 have received either a taxane or a new aromatase inhibitor. The 3-year overall survival rates were 27% for patients treated from 1987 to 1993 and 44% for patients treated from 1994 to 2000 (P < .001). The treatment period (1994 to 2000 v 1987 to 1993) was a prognostic factor in multivariate analysis (relative risk, 0.6; P < .001). Conclusion The survival of breast cancer patients presenting with metastases at diagnosis has improved over time. This study strongly suggests that this improvement is related to treatment.

Resumo:

The conodont genus Teridontus was introduced in 1980 by Miller and was based on the Late Cambrian species Oneotodus nakamurai Nogami, 1967 from the Yencho Member of the Fengshan Fm. of northeast China. Teridontus was later reported from either the Upper Cambrian or Lower Ordovician (Landing et al., 1980; Miller, 1980; Landing and Barnes, 1981; Landing, 1983; An et al., 1983, 1985; Ni et al., 1983; Peng et al., 1983; Nowlan, 1985; Landing et al., 1986; Bagnoli et al., 1987; An, 1987; Buggisch and Repetski, 1987; Pohler and Orchard, 1990; An and Zheng, 1990; Seo and Ethington, 1993; Wang, 1993; Lehnen, 1994; Nicoll, 1994; Seo et al., 1994; Ji and Barnes, 1994; Taylor et al., 1996; Lehnert et al., 1997; Jia, 2000; Dubinina, 2000; Pyle and Barnes, 2002; Zeballo et al., 2005) sediments in numerous localities around the world, but a unanimous interpretation of the composition of the Teridontus apparatus organization was far from accepted.

A retrospective review was done to evaluate the detection of hepatocellular carcinoma preoperatively, using ultrasonography and α-fetoprotein in patients awaiting orthotopic liver transplantation. Sixteen of the 187 patients who underwent 209 orthotopic liver transplantations at the Ochsner Transplant Center from 1987 to 1994 were diagnosed with hepatocellular carcinoma, 3 preoperatively and 11 at the time of pathological inspection of the liver explant. Two developed metastatic hepatocellular carcinoma while awaiting orthotopic liver transplantation. Ultrasonography detected abnormalities in the region where hepatoma was identified in 5 of 11 (45%) patients with incidental hepatocellular carcinoma, in all 3 with overt hepatocellular carcinoma, and in neither of the 2 who developed metastatic hepatocellular carcinoma while awaiting orthotopic liver transplantation. Hepatocellular carcinoma was present in 5 of 23 (22%) patients with an α-fetoprotein greater than 20 ng/mL and in 3 of 10 (30%) with an α-fetoprotein greater than 50 ng/mL.

OBJETIVO: Acompanhar a evolução da prática do aleitamento materno na clientela de maternidade e avaliar as ações para sua promoção. MÉTODOS: Foram comparadas duas coortes de crianças nascidas em épocas diferentes em hospital de Porto Alegre, RS, quanto às prevalências do aleitamento materno nos primeiros seis meses de vida das crianças bem como as taxas de interrupção precoce da amamentação. Os dois estudos foram prospectivos, envolvendo 202 crianças na coorte de 1987 e 187 na de 1994, todas saudáveis, com peso de nascimento igual ou superior a 2.500 g, tendo iniciado o aleitamento materno e cujos pais morassem juntos. O acompanhamento foi realizado através de correspondência, no estudo de 1987, e de visitas domiciliares, no estudo de 1994. RESULTADOS: As curvas de sobrevida do aleitamento materno revelaram que o percentual de crianças amamentadas ao longo dos primeiros seis meses foi semelhante nas duas coortes. A prevalência do aleitamento materno exclusivo, apesar de baixa nos dois grupos, foi superior na população de 1994, especialmente entre as crianças cujas mães tinham maior escolaridade. Não houve diferença no índice de interrupção precoce entre as duas coortes (36% na coorte de 1987 e 39% na de 1994). CONCLUSÕES: Os resultados apontam para uma apatia do serviço com relação à promoção do aleitamento materno no período estudado, justificando plenamente o investimento na promoção da amamentação, especialmente nas famílias menos privilegiadas.

In recent years, as social scientists questioned the intellectual boundaries set by customary perceptions of criminality, their discourse expanded to incorporate more than purely legalistic definitions of crime. In addition to conventional street crimes, some scholars began examining both interpersonal and collective actions and behaviors that were once considered to be outside the scope of commonly accepted definitions of criminality. For example, criminologists now study crime categorized as occupational (Albanese 1987; Cressey 1953; Green 1990; Hollinger and Clark 1983; Horning 1979; Nettler 1974; Tracy and Fox 1989), environmental (Block and Bernard 1988; Brady 1987; Stone 1987; Tallmer 1987), political (Barak 1994; Block 1989; Block and Chambliss 1981; Chambliss 1993; Quinney 1970; Schwendinger and Schwendinger 1970; Tunnell 1993; Turk 1969), and corporate (Clinard and Yeager 1980; Clinard et al. 1979; Coleman 1994; Reiman 1979; Sutherland 1949), using methodology and terminology once reserved for predatory street crime. This trend can be traced to the pioneering work of Thorsten Sellin (1938) and Edwin Sutherland (1940, 1949), who argued for broader, more inclusive definitions of criminality and less conventional approaches to the study of crime.

Resumo:

David Smith was an international authority in the biological discipline of symbiosis and an influential leader in academic life. Through his work on photosynthetic symbioses in lichens and invertebrate animals, David transformed the field of symbiosis from a study of taxonomy and morphology into an experimental science. In particular, he applied novel radiotracer techniques to demonstrate that lichens are metabolically dynamic, with photosynthetically-fixed carbon transferred from symbionts to lichen host at high rates. His subsequent study of diverse symbioses led him to develop common principles underlying symbioses, including the regulated transfer of metabolites between partners and the role of ecological processes of colonization and community assembly in the establishment of symbioses. In his academic service, David had multiple leadership roles, including head of the Department of Botany at University of Bristol (1974–1980), head of the Department of Agricultural Science at University of Oxford (1980–1987), principal of University of Edinburgh (1987–1994) and president of Wolfson College, University of Oxford (1994–2000). David was biological secretary of the Royal Society (1983–1987) and he was knighted in 1986.

Statistics has emerged as a major component of the school mathematics curriculum during the 1990 (NCTM 1989). We know that understanding the statistical-investigation process (Graham 1987) is central to working with statistics. A statistical investigation typically involve four components: (1) posing the question; (2) collecting data; (3) analyzing data; and (4) interpreting the results, in some order (Graham 1987). Kader and Perry (1994) suggest a fifth stage of a statistical investigation: communicating results.

Résumé Notre essai porte sur l'action récente des universités francophones du Québec pour améliorer la maîtrise de la langue écrite de leurs étudiants. Nous nous intéressons d'abord au contexte dans lequel ont été conçus les premiers examens imposés à l'admission, notamment à ce qu'on peut en déduire relativement à l'importance de la langue dans la formation de l'étudiant. Suit une analyse détaillée de l'épreuve de production écrite du ministère de l'Éducation. Cet instrument de mesure mérite en effet qu'on s'y arrête, car on peut en dégager le profil de compétence communicationnelle reconnu comme préalable aux études universitaires.

Se analiza el hipocentro y el mecanismo focal del terremoto del 10 de mayo de 1994 (mb=5.9). La profundidad y el mecanismo focal es obtenido usando las formas de las ondas P, SV y SH registradas en estaciones de periodo largo ubicadas a distancias telesísmicas. El epicentro fue obtenido mediante una determinación conjunta usando los tiempos de llegada registrados en redes locales y telesísmicas. El 8 de agosto de 1987 ocurrió un evento tensional (mb=6.4) a una profundidad de 76 km; este evento y el evento compresional de 1994 están ambos localizados en el extremo norte del área de ruptura del terremoto de 1877, a aproximadamente 200 km de distancia de la fosa, cercano a la zona de transición de la parte desacoplada de la placa de Nazca en subduccón. Considerando los últimos 32 años de información disponible, la ocurrencia de los terremotos de 1987 y 1994 ha sido inusual. Se sugiere que ambos eventos podrían estar asociados a un pre-deslizamiento sísmico que estaría ocurriendo en la parte más profunda del contacto sismogénico interplaca, en la breca sísmica del norte de Chile, la que podría estar cercana a la etapa final de su ciclo sísmico.

Because the detectability of host eggs is low, egg parasitoids rely on infochemicals other than those from the host egg itself, such as host plant synomones (Nordlund 1994; Meiners et al. 2000) and adult host kairomones (Nordlund et al. 1983; Nordlund 1994; Colazza et al. 1999; Meiners et al. 2000). Egg kairomones are used only in the final stages of host selection (Kainoh et al. 1982; Strand and Vinson 1982, 1983; Nordlund et al. 1987; Meiners et al. 2000; Takasu and Nordlund 2001).

Psorospermium cf. haeckeli Hilgendorf 1883 is a unicellular, eukaryotic protozoan within the class Mesomycetozoea, phylogenetically situated near the animal-fungal divergence(Cavalier-Smith 1998; Ragan et al. 1998). Although only one species has been identified, there have been four morphotypes described in 17 species of crayfish from the Holarctic, Neotropical, and Australasian regions (Herbert 1987; Henttonen et al. 1992, 1994; Rug & Vogt 1994). However, molecular analyses of the internal transcribed spacer DNA suggest morphotypes may represent distinct species (Bangyeekhun et al. 2001).

Background Data and statistics are presented on cancer death certification in Italy, updating previous publications covering the period 1955-1993. Methods Data for 1994 and the quinquennium 1990-94 subdivided into 30 cancer sites are presented in 8 tables, including age- and sex-specific absolute and percentage frequencies of cancer deaths, and crude, age-specific and age-standardized rates, at all ages and truncated for the 35-64 year age group. Trends in age-standardized rates for major cancer sites are plotted from 1955 to 1994. Results The age-standardized (world standard) death certification rates from all neoplasms steadily declined from the peak of 199.2/100,000 males in 1988 to 186.3 in 1994, and in females from 102.5 in 1989 to 98.6 in 1994. Ever larger was the decline in truncated rates, for males from the peak of 275.1/100,000 in 1983 to 223.2 (-19%) in 1994, and for females from 151.6/100,000 in 1987 to 136.4 (-10%). A major component of the favourable cancer mortality trends in males was lung cancer (accounting for 31,000 deaths in both sexes combined in 1994), whose overall age-standardized rates declined from 60.3 in 1987-89 to 54.6/100,000 males in 1994 (-9%), and from the peak of 96.7 in 1983 at ages 35 to 64 to 72.7 in 1994 (-25%). In contrast, female lung cancer rates have remained stable from 1992 onwards, but have increased from 7.2 to 7.7 at all ages and from 10.6 to 11.0 at age 35-64 between 1985-89 and 1990-94. These different trends in the two sexes reflect the patterns and trends in smoking among Italian males and females. Conclusions Cancer mortality trends in Italy over the period 1990-94 were relatively favourable, mainly reflecting the decline in lung cancer rates in males, together with the persistent declines in gastric cancer in both sexes and in cervix uteri for women. Continuous advancements were registered for neoplasms amenable to treatment, essentially testicular cancer, Hodgkin's disease and childhood leukaemias. The major unfavourable trends were observed for non Hodgkin's lymphomas, and require therefore further monitoring, besides a clearer understanding of their determinants. Italy maintains an intermediate level of cancer mortality on a European scale, suggesting that further progress is possible, mostly for tobacco-related neoplasms in males.

Tara Duncan, 1994, was established as a terrestrial genus of New Zealand talitrid amphipods, with the type species Orchestia sylvicola Dana, 1852. It was recently discovered to be a junior homonym of Tara Peckham & Peckham, 1886, a genus of salticid spiders (Araneae, Salticidae, Amycinae, Astiini). Tara Peckham & Peckham, 1886, is a valid name in current use for a small endemic genus of Australian jumping spiders recently revised by Zabka (1987). Tara Duncan, 1994, appears in the literature at least three times: in the original description of the genus (Duncan 1994), in identification keys to the terrestrial amphipods of New Zealand (Fenwick & Webber 2008), and in the recent inventory of New Zealand biodiversity (Webber et al. 2010). The new name, Dana, is proposed to replace Tara Duncan, 1994.

Determination of the structure of integral membrane proteins is a challenging task that is essential to understand how fundamental biological processes (such as photosynthesis, respiration and solute translocation) function at the atomic level. Crystallisation of membrane proteins in 3D has led to the determination of four atomic resolution structures [photosynthetic reaction centres (Allenet al. 1987; Changet al. 1991; Deisenhofer & Michel, 1989; Ermleret al. 1994); porins (Cowanet al. 1992; Schirmeret al. 1995; Weisset al. 1991); prostaglandin H2synthase (Picotet al. 1994); light harvesting complex (McDermottet al. 1995)], and crystals of membrane proteins formed in the plane of the lipid bilayer (2D crystals) have produced two more structures [bacteriorhodopsin (Hendersonet al. 1990); light harvesting complex (Kühlbrandtet al. 1994)].

The generic name Clarencia was originally proposed by Sloane (1917) for a genus of carabid beetles (Insecta, Coleoptera, Carabidae). It is a valid name in current use for a small endemic genus of Australian/Papua New Guinean ground beetles, recently revised by Baehr (2005). Clarencia K.H. Barnard, 1931, was established as a monotypic genus of Antarctic amphipods. Shaw (1989) and Zeidler (1994) have both redescribed Clarencia chelata K.H. Barnard, 1931. Zeidler (1994) re-diagnosed the family Clarenciidae Barnard & Karaman, 1987 and set up the superfamily Clarencioidea. It was recently brought to our attention that Clarencia K.H. Barnard, 1931 is a junior homonym of Clarencia Sloane, 1917. The new name, Thurstonella, is proposed to replace Clarencia K.H. Barnard, 1931. Because the type genus of the family is a junior homonym, the family group name Clarenciidae Barnard & Karaman, 1987, is replaced with Thurstonellidae, in accordance with Article 39 of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (1999, fourth edition).

Increasingly complex population synthesis models have been developed during the last few years. Among the different authors working in the field, these groups have been particularly active: Arimoto & Yoshii (1987), Guiderdoni & Rocca-Volmerange (1987), Buzzoni (1989), Fritze-v. Alvensleben & Gerhard (1994), Bressan, Chiosi, & Fagotto (1994), Bruzual & Chariot (1993, 1995). The basic astrophysical ingredients used in these models are the stellar evolutionary tracks and the stellar spectral libraries (either empirical or theoretical). The computational algorithms are different in each set of models, but, one way or the other, these models depend on the same adjustable parametric functions: (1) the stellar initial mass function (IMF); (2) the star formation rate (SFR); and (3) the rate of chemical enrichment (in some models Z = Z⊙ = constant). Most of the recent codes use the isochrone synthesis algorithm, which allows to compute the evolution of a simple stellar population (SSP), and from it, by a convolution integral, the properties of more complex composite stellar populations (CSP).

O presente artigo aborda o lugar do volume de narrativas Nove, novena, publicado em 1966, na trajetória literária do escritor Osman Lins (1924-1978), bem como verifica como o tema da escrita é trabalhado em uma das narrativas que o compõem, intitulada “O pássaro transparente”. Para isso, serão utilizados os pressupostos teórico-críticos de Andrade (1987), Nitrini (1987), Barthes (1987, 2004), Barbosa (1996), Paes (1994), Eco (2008), entre outros. Será observado que, no referido conto, a escrita cotidiana é abordada por intermédio da presença de cartas e do jornal. A escrita literária e a arte visual também se fazem presentes, por meio do tema do poeta frustrado, representado na personagem masculina, e da preparação para uma trajetória artística, representada na personagem feminina.

The rate of supernovae (SNe) is a key number linking stellar evolution with galaxy evolution models. Stellar evolution theories predict life times, fates and nucleosysntesis yields of individual stars which are used to predicted the galaxy chemical evolution once the star formation history in the galaxy is known. Constraints to the models are the present chemical content of galaxies but also the present observed SN rate (Arimoto & Yoshi, 1987; Ferrini & Poggianti, 1993; Matteucci, 1994; Renzini et al., 1993; Bressan et al., 1994; Elbaz et al., 1995).

Castagna and Smith (1994) presented a very interesting comparison of some of the different amplitude variation with offset (AVO) indicators used in the industry today. They used a worldwide sample of data to compute their examples. In their paper, they alluded to the “fluid factor” of Smith and Gidlow (1987) but they did not compute this attribute for their data. In the following, we suggest how the fluid factor can be computed, and compare the results with the [Formula: see text] and (A + B)/2 techniques. We have used Castagna and Smith’s (1994) notation.
