This thesis focuses on the activities of a group of young French people staying in a hostel in Noumea from 1991 to 1993. It draws on my fieldwork in Noumea and Mare in the Loyalty Islands of New Caledonia. The main part of the thesis looks at the interactions of this group of young people with other ethnic and social groups living in New Caledonia. These include the Kanaks, the "Caldoches" (native-born Caledonians of French origin), the "Metros" (immigrants from metropolitan France), Pacific islanders, Vietnamese and Indonesians. The thesis also includes a short section describing Mare itself and my fieldwork there. Particular attention is paid to the Kanaks and to the Caldoches, whose rural and urban lifestyles are compared and contrasted to those of the young people being studied. Relations between these young people, newly arrived in the French Pacific, and those of the colony's established inhabitants, allow themes of globalization, travel, knowledge, reflexivity and alterity to be explored vis-a-vis anthropological theory. Kanak behaviour, towards Kanaks and others, is shown to relate to ideas of knowledge, power, gender and hierarchy, prevalent in both Polynesia and Melanesia. The work is underpinned by explanations of, and references to, the international and local historical and geographical context of New Caledonian social and political behaviour. It attempts to show the bitter disputes and resentments arising between ethnic groups. It discusses civil unrest, the Kanaks' desire for independence, and some possible economic and social consequences.

This dissertation examines why, how and with what impact people living in conflict areas organize collectively to assert human rights. The focus is the emergence in the 1980s of a human rights movement in the oil enclave of Barrancabermeja. The Barrancabermeja-based Regional Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CREDHOS) was created in 1987 in the context of dirty war fought on multiple fronts between state security forces and their paramilitary allies, on the one hand, and Marxist insurgent groups, on the other. In exploring the history of a human rights movement in one of Colombia's most chronically war-affected regions, this dissertation expands our understanding of how frontline activists interpret human rights principles from the bottom-up. Human rights movements cannot be viewed as axiomatic or simple humanitarian responses to political violence. The term “human rights” refers to contingent norms and practices that are derived from lived experiences of authoritarianism, war, poverty and social exclusion. In this dissertation I argue that social activists in the war-torn Colombian oil town of Barrancabermeja undertook human rights activism both as a strategy of self-preservation and as a transformative praxis. In Barrancabermeja, the struggle for human rights did not displace or supplant longstanding local struggles for social justice and political change. Rather, human rights was considered to be a form of social protest consistent with previously existing traditions of popular radicalism for which Barrancabermeja has become celebrated.

Background: cross-sectional studies have shown an inverse relationship between waist circumference (WC) and lung function in adults and elderly. The long term effects of such association, as well as its relation to adolescence are not yet established. Objectives: to evaluate the effects of WC and percentage of fat mass on lung function parameters in adolescence. Methods: a longitudinal study of the 1993 Birth Cohort, in Pelotas, Brazil, at the 18 years old follow-up. WC was evaluated using the difference, in standard deviation, between 15 and 18 years old, adjusted for height in both periods. Percentage of fat mass was evaluated using air-displacement pletismography. Spirometry was performed to obtain Forced Expiratory Volume in 1 second (FEV1) and Forced Vital Capacity (FVC). Multivariate Linear regression models were performed. Results: out of 5,249 original members, 4,129 were evaluated at 18 years old. Spirometry was performed in 3,859 individuals. There was a statistically significant inverse relationship between the WC difference and FEV1 and among men, both for absolute values (β = -0,028 [IC 95% -0.053; -0.003]) and for predicted values (β = - 0.646 [IC 95% -1.247; -0.046]). An inverse relationship between percentage of fat and FEV1 and CVF was also statistically significant for both sexes. Conclusion: WC difference and percentage of fat mass were negatively associated with lung function. However, the actual body fat mass seems to be a more important determinant for lung function than WC difference.

In this thesis some clues for a visual theory of comics is proposed relying on the analysis of Argentinian transpositive comics artist’s work, Alberto Breccia. The transpositive aspect of his work is an excellent starting point for an investigation focused on the plastic virtue of comics, which is associated to its materials and processes. Transpositive comics adapt literary texts or other cultural objects, and they have been around at least since the beginning of the art form itself. In the practice of transposition, the transposed work claims a direct and explicit link with one or more background texts or stories. However, transposition is a broader phenomenon than the mere passage from a story, or a source-text, to a linear image set up in the form of comics. There is, indeed, a whole dimension of analysis that concerns the thematic and narrative dimension, as well as the formal, plastic and visual dimensions, processes and modes of representation. The latter aspect will be the focus of the present analysis, because Breccia seems to be one of the first comic artists to explore a range of new ways of representation in comics, using literary transpositions. This is no coincidence, since the transpositions selected by Breccia lead him to explore precisely the boundaries between figurative and informal. He is one of the first artists to open comics to new plastic concerns, which go beyond the readability and the immediate recognition of his first more illustrative comics

Mennonite pacifism has its roots in the sixteenth century Anabaptist movement of western Europe. For centuries the Mennonites interpreted their pacifism in terms of non-resistance. However, during a period between 1918 and 1920, Mennonite colonists in the Ukraine organized a unit for self-defence known as the Selbstschutz. The purpose of this study is to determine why a people historically committed to peace abandoned their principles and resorted to force. The subject of Mennonite non-resistance in general, and the Selbstschutz in particular, has received little attention from historians. Books dealing with Mennonite history refer to the Selbstschutz fleetingly, if at all. Frank Epp, for example, in his two volume study of the Mennonites in Canada devotes less than a page to the Selbstschutz, describing it as "hastily assembled Home Defence" and concluding that the "Mennonites paid dearly for their resistance". Similarly brief is C. Henry Smith's treatment of the subject which concludes that "In later years, the older generation of Mennonites, as represented in conferences, officially condemned the Selbstschutz as a tactical blunder, as well as a violation of their traditional peace princples." One historian who has discussed the Selbstschutz in detail is Lawrence Klippenstein. In his dissertation he deals with the Selbstschutz within the larger context of Mennonite pacifism. In the chapter "Revolution and the Civil War" Klippenstein looks at the Selbstschutz as one aspect of the Mennonite response to the terror in the Ukraine. He speculates that few Mennonites had thought through the concept of pacifism to its ultimate conclusion which is, of course, that one must be prepared to suffer and die for the peace principle if necessary. When called upon to make a firm commitment to non-resistance at the All-Mennonite Conference they side-stepped the issue, concluding that each man must be allowed to follow his own conscience. The failure of the Conference to take a united stand against self-defence allowed those who favored arming the colonies to do so openly and aggressively. In spite of the fact that armed resistance seemed justifiable to many Mennonites at the time, some of those who compromised their ideals were left with troubled minds. Klippenstein raises the question, "Why was it that the peace principle had been so readily subdued when put to the test?", but he does not pursue an answer...

Jones, Esyllt Wynne. "Searching for the springs of health : women and working families in Winnipeg's 1918-1919 influenza epidemic". 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/1993/3788.

Resumo:
In the winter of 1918-1919, a pandemic of influenza crossed the globe, killing as many as 50 million people. This dissertation is a local study of influenza in Winnipeg, Canada. It dissects the social responses to the disease from four different perspectives: that of the public health and medical authorities; middle class Anglo-Canadian women volunteers who provided nursing care and material relief to the city's poorer influenza victims; working class and immigrant families; and organized labour. The dissertation argues that the influenza epidemic, coming on the heels of the devastating Great War, and arriving in the midst of class, ethnic, and gender conflicts, played a role in deepening the social cleavages of Winnipeg society in the period, particularly those of class and ethnicity. Class and ethnic tension was not the inevitable outcome of the epidemic. Rather, it was the result of the social inequality of the disease's impact--working families represented a disproportionately high number of influenza's victims--and the failure of public authorities to mount a compassionate and cooperative community effort to fight the disease. The volunteerism of middle class Anglo-Canadian women, too, failed to build the bonds of community. Labour believed that the state response to influenza was a betrayal of principles of justice and public good. Workers' families bore the brunt of public closures and layoffs. A spirit of mutualism sustained families and neighbourhoods through the disease, and contributed to the mobilizing successes of the workers' movement in 1918-1919. The trauma of the epidemic suggested the fragility of the social order, and workers' capacity to build an alternative society. Their vision of social transformation included the creation of the "springs of health": a living wage, quality housing, and equal access to a democratic medical system. Many working families, nevertheless, found it difficult to recover from the loss of spouses and children. Their stories suggest that influenza had a long-term impact upon the evolution of post-war Canada that we are only just beginning to understand.

Abstract How Many Americans Suffer from Alcohol-Related Disorders? Between 5 and 7 percent of the U.S. population, or between 14 million and 16 million people, meet DSM-IV criteria for alcohol abuse or dependence (NIAAA, 1993). Annual per capita alcohol consumption in America has remained generally steady over the past 150 years, with two exceptions: during the 14 years of Prohibition from 1919 to 1933 and since about 1960, which first saw a rise in alcohol consumption and then a fall. Rates of alcohol abuse and dependence have probably remained steady over the same time span (Horgan, 1993).

This chapter examines important developments in Europe and the former Soviet Union. The collapse of communism paved the way for the greatest changes in Europe since 1919, with the political disintegration of three Eurasian countries: the then USSR, with localized outbreaks of violence; Yugoslavia, with several years of bloody civil war; and Czechoslovakia, where the Czechs and Slovaks peacefully agreed to go their own way as of January 1993, in the so-called ‘velvet divorce’. Communism’s demise also brought reunification to a divided nation: Germany. The chapter first considers the German reunification, before discussing the break-up of the USSR and the Wars of Succession, Yugoslavia’s break-up and the Bosnian War, NATO and European security, and the emergence of the European Union, which replaced the European Community.

Abstract The Order oF Events in Love Medicine at first seems confusing. Although Erdrich often gives dates along with the titles to the various stories, and though after the first one, these stories are presented in chronological order, many of them include references to earlier incidents whose dates are unspecified. Thus, in the following summary we have rearranged the novel’s most important events and presented them in chronological order. The dates are taken either from the chapter heads or from internal evidence. Where we have guessed at a date we include a parenthetical indicator (?) of the uncertainty. Dates that are uncertain in Love Medicine but are revealed in another novel (without contradicting Love Medicine) are supplied in square brackets [1919]. Readers may also be confused by the fact that in the expanded (1993) edition of Love Medicine Erdrich has not only added new material but changed some of the old. In the first edition, for example, Eli and Nector are twins, while in the expanded edition Eli is said to be Rushes Bear’s “y0ungest son” (IM, 101). That fact is in turn contradicted by information in Tracks, where Nector, born about 1908, is said to be the “younger brother” (Tr, 39) of Eli, who is born around 1898.

Contemporary geographical research concerning North America’s native peoples is most conspicuous for its remarkably diverse set of subjects, methods, and epistemological stances. Indeed, it would be hard to find another AAG specialty group whose members do research in as many corners of the natural and social sciences and humanities. Some perspectives developed quite recently, while others emanate from a century of prior research by geographers, especially Carl Sauer and his students. We think these observations important enough to require opening our review with a description, albeit a painfully brief one, of the historical context for the current scene. In the early twentieth century, as now, there was a great deal of cross-fertilization between anthropology and geography. Deterministic thinking associated with environmentalist theory (e.g. Hans 1925; Huntington 1919; Semple 1903) elicited many critical responses from both fields. For example, the geographer-turned-anthropologist Franz Boas and his students sought to illuminate the full complexity of Native American life, producing a vast corpus of empirical studies. Many addressed geographical topics, including Native North American place-names, environmental knowledge, and resource use. These works were frequently termed “ethnogeographies” (e.g. Barrett 1908; Boas 1934; Harrington 1916). Others attempted sweeping continental studies of regional variation based on historical and cultural processes (Kroeber 1939; Wissler 1926). The historicist critique of environmentalist theory resonated with a young geographer, Carl Sauer. Sauer (1920) long had interests in American Indian land-use practices, or “land management” in current parlance. Regular interaction with Boas’s students, especially Kroeber and Lowie, coupled with independent development of their own geographical ideas, led Sauer and his students to expand their research on North American Indian cultural geography, including such subjects as settlement patterns (e.g. Sauer and Brand 1930), plant use (e.g. Carter 1945), and resources and material and oral culture (e.g. Kniffen 1939). Sauer, his large number of Ph.D. students, and his student’s students, continued to define this research agenda throughout the twentieth century (e.g. Kniffen et al. 1987; Sauer 1971). The continued relevance of this work was signaled recently by the reissue of two classic texts in new editions (Denevan 1992a; Waterman 1993).

Abstract The past decade has witnessed a rapid growth in our knowledge of how to diagnose and treat viral diseases. In particular, the advent of effective antiviral treatment options has focused new attention on the prompt and accurate diagnosis of nervous system viral infections. The routine availability of antibody testing of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and more recently, of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis has facilitated early detection of many viral infections (DiBiasi and Tyler, 1999). Despite these advances, viral infections of the nervous system remain an important source of global morbidity and mortality. In general, most acute viral infections are benign and self-limited and clinically significant central nervous system (CNS) disease is an uncommon complication of systemic viral infection. In other instances, as exemplified by the notorious 1918–1919 influenza pandemic, the tragic aftermath included worldwide outbreaks of viral encephalitis with debilitating morbidity and over 25 million deaths (Reid et al., 2001). Furthermore, in a variety of diseases including multiple sclerosis and schizophrenia, viruses are once again under scrutiny as potential pathogens (Johnston et al., 2001; Stohlman and Hinton, 2001; Pearce, 2001). What role will the pathologist play in the investigation and diagnosis of CNS viral diseases? In the future, pathologists will probably rely less on their knowledge of morphology and will instead be called upon to integrate molecular diagnostic tools with traditional histopathologic methods (Gressens et al., 1993). The reasons are twofold: the lack of diagnostic specificity of morphologic features in most viral infections, and secondly, the fact that the presence of a viral agent in infected tissue is not always coupled with specific pathologic change. Nonetheless, classic histopathologic study will continue to complement newer molecular diagnostic methods and provide useful insight into both the recognition and pathogenesis of viral diseases. The present review focuses on the basic patterns of disease and selected advances regarding the most common agents, as well as a brief survey of important emerging causes of viral infections of the nervous system. In addition, special consideration will be given to a discussion of the so-called “slow virus infections” or prion diseases.
