AbstractThis article reconsiders the life of Ellen Wilkinson (1891–1947) – British Minister of Education from 1945 to 1947 and leader of the Jarrow Crusade of 1936 – by exploring the transnational aspect of her politics. It seeks to establish the significance of her transnational orientation and how this can allow us to complement and deepen existing understandings of her. Drawing on the literature on transnational activist networks, it outlines the complexity of transnational networks and her repertoire of transnational political practice. Without serious attention to this global dimension of her politics, our understanding of Wilkinson is attenuated and distorted. Crucially, the heroic construction of “Red Ellen” in both labourist and socialist-feminist narratives has obscured her second radicalization (1932–1936) and the sharpness of her metamorphosis into a mainstream Labour Party figure in 1939–1940.

AbstractThis paper presents the first results of our most recent research on the Bilbao Stock Exchange (BSE) from its foundation in 1890 up to the Spanish Civil War. We examine the origin of the Exchange and follow its evolution over the first half-century of existence. To this end we introduce some of the stock exchange indexes we have calculated for Bilbao and put them into comparative perspective with the existing series on general economic and industrial activity and the indexes for other Spanish exchanges for the period considered. These comparisons show Bilbao’s evolution from a public debt-dominated market to an industrial exchange very much tied to regional development. Finally, we contrast the degree of financial market integration associated with the existing Spanish exchange indexes. Our analysis finds strong support for considering the BSE index as an industrial index and little evidence of capital market integration between the principal Spanish exchanges before the 1920s.

The representation of women artists in the Spanish graphic press in the first third of the 20th century is a field of research that has hardly been approached, which has undoubted value for its contribution to the analysis of the reception of plastic artists in the period in which women began to make their way into the art system. This work analyzes the construction and meanings behind the archetype of the female painter in the particular case of the magazine Blanco y Negro (1891-1936), which was a pioneer in the modernization of the illustrated press in Spain as well as emblematic for its covers and artistic pages, made by the most recognized artists and cartoonists of the time.

The aim of this work was to study the different feminine associations that played an important role in the field of popular education and social work from 1891 to 1936, in the context of social catholicism. The first part describes the conditions under which some of the associations emerged la ligue patriotique des francaises, la ligue des femmes francaises, l'action sociale de la femme, la ligue sociale d'acheteurs, l'union feminine civique et sociale, les guides de france - and situates them in relation to masculine catholic groups and in the setting of their competition with the lay movements. The second part examines in a monographic manner two associations linked to the "french settlement" movement : the charonne family union and the social residence of levallois-perret. The latter subsequently founded the federation des centres sociaux de france. This thesis explores three avenues: - it focuses on a moment in the history of catholicism (in particular the feminine lay movement) in the context of a more general cultural process. - it shows that these associations are also a meeting place for the advancement of women, and in this respect are part of the history of feminism. .

Abstract: This dissertation aimed to discuss Antonio Gramsci's critique to Robert Michels. The analysis was undertaken on the critique to three concept-processes of Michels's: the iron law of oligarchy in political parties, the charismatic elite and the concept of political elite. For this research, it was necessary to recover Michel's formulations in the light of his time, reflecting about the changes in the author's thought in the political history of the beginning of the century: from his critique on the social democracy to his support for the fascism. However, according to Gramsci, the theoretical reconstruction was made from the Prison Notebooks, the main work in which the author develops a critique to Michels. This critique was never systematized and, therefore, it had to undergo a reconstruction of the main concepts of the Italian Communist seeking to clarify the differences. Both Michels and Gramsci formulated their political sciences concerning the division between leader and led. But the theoretical construction of this division, according to these authors, is opposite. From this divergence was possible to demonstrate that Gramsci's critique reveals the limitations of Michels's text. In this sense, we come to a conclusion that the Gramscian concept of transformism emerged as a theoretical overrun oligarchization in Michels's theory

Abstract: In his Meditations, Descartes employs all imaginable skeptical arguments in order to shake the beliefs that ground the natural worldview and to find if there is some truth beyond doubt. After discovering the indubitable existence of the thinking self and determining its nature, Descartes tries to save, by demonstrating the existence of a truthful God, the objective value of sensible ideas. In this work, assuming that the only genuine subjectivism comes from a skeptical doubt like Descartes', we will investigate the hypothesis that such subjectivism is devoid of any sense, because the critical attitude of evaluation of knowledge from where it results presupposes a naturally unsustainable generalization and scope. In order to do that, we will employ the critique of external (global) propositions developed by Schlick and Carnap. Indeed, the Cartesian doubt is not related to a part of the world, but to the world as whole. The problem would lie in the extent of doubt and in the spiritual character assigned to the ego. In the same way, the concept of a metaphysical God, indifferent to the elements of the empirical framework, would be subjected to the same accusation of lack of sense formulated by Schlick-Carnap

Sandoz laboratories produced mainly in the 60’s and 70’s several artistic films (e.g. La Femme 100 Têtes which was the adaptation of Max Ernst’s collages or Images du monde visionnaire with the presence of artist Henri Michaux). The thesis explores some of the films and, at the same time, describes the production background and cinematographic context in the relation to the history of Sandoz laboratories.

The question of the bird in contemporary poetry seems to be obvious. It's really impossible to open a collection of poems without seeing lots of explicit references to the bird : his fly, his singing, and his discreet but permanent presence. How to explain this recurrence in contemporary production ? And what's the foundation of the bird's particularity in the animal kingdom ? After justifying the connection of the three poets of our corpus, we based our work on analogical and transdiciplinary viewpoints. Reviving the medieval mysticism, poetry looks for the limits of human nature in the world-macrocosm. The bird, that seems the last limit for the human psychism, allows us to redefine animality in accordance with a principle of "consanguinity" (Saint-John Perse). Against the modern proclivity to dispersion and catalogue, this analogical thought circulating in the poems of our authors, wants to reconstruct the weft, to "sew up the universe". The metaphysical dimension, that is not often clearly claimed by our poets, is always underlying. Beyond a description of the real world, that is leaning on the precision of the science, another dimension, verging on rilkean "Ouvert", impregnates their works. The bird, through the patterns of the flight and the singing, draws the lines of poetics linked by aesthetic modernity

The 1910 polemic on the “crisis of Symbolism” began when the Symbolist poet Viacheslav Ivanov read a lecture entitled the “Precepts of Symbolism.” This lecture initiated a lively debate on the status of this prominent literary movement, to which many of the leading literary figures of the Silver Age contributed. Although the “crisis of Symbolism” has garnered a great deal of scholarly interest, an important aspect of this debate has remained unexplored. Ivanov’s lecture contained an attack on the notion of clarity, which he interpreted as the word’s “transparency” to reason. He argued that language is neither an adequate expression of thought, nor an accurate representation of “reality.” The lecture was itself a polemical response to a brief article written by Ivanov’s friend, Mikhail Kuzmin, and entitled “On Beautiful Clarity: Notes on Prose.” Published a few months before Ivanov’s lecture, this essay urged respect for the word, advocated such Classical values as precision, economy of means and clarity of expression. Both “On Beautiful Clarity” and the “Precepts of Symbolism” appeared at a time when pervasive loss of faith in the communicative power of language combined with the sense of social and cultural malaise led to a profound crisis that far exceeded the ranks of the Symbolists. Between 1910 and 1917, a number of Russian writers and thinkers proclaimed the word “dead” and offered programs for its revival. For Ivanov, clarity was an Enlightenment notion that he associated with rationalism and blamed for the ills of his age. For Kuzmin, however, clarity represented poetic rather than empirical meaningfulness and had little to do with the kind of empirical “transparency” that Ivanov had in mind. Both poets were after the same goal: a poetics that would bridge the perceived divide between the word and “reality.” Even as Ivanov argued for a language of mystical obscurity in the hope that such an idiom would restore the mystery and meaning of which he believed his age was sapped, he replaced clarity with a kind of Symbolist intelligibility and so a clarity of his own. This dissertation examines Viacheslav Ivanov’s, Mikhail Kuzmin’s and Osip Mandelshtam’s distinct approaches to the concept of clarity as poetic sense, formulated by these poets independently as well as in response to each other. I argue that for all three poets the notion of clarity applies to the specific relationship between the poet and the word, between the image and the word, and between the semantic content and the sound within the word. Since for all three poets, clarity is associated not only with the poetic logos in general, but specifically with the heritage of European Classicism, the Classical ideal works its way into these relationships as the “image” of sense to which the poet must aspire. For each poet, poetic clarity is an explicit concept as well an individual “model” implicit in his poetic identity.

Tagamet emerged as the first blockbuster drug when its sales exceeded $1 billion in 1986, three years after its introduction to the market. An anti–peptic ulcer drug, Tagamet was discovered by James W. Black and his colleagues at Smith Kline & French’s (SK&F) British subsidiary in Welwyn Garden City. Before Tagamet, SK&F was a little-known U.S. drug firm in Philadelphia. After Tagamet, SK&F became one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world. The history of Tagamet is one of the most extraordinary in the annals of medicine. It is a saga of a drug that almost escaped detection because the research efforts that began in 1964 did not seem to produce results within the first 11 years! Smith Kline started as a humble drug store in Philadelphia in 1830. During the American Civil War, Smith Kline was founded as a small apothecary by two physicians, John K. Smith and John Gilbert on North Second Street. Not only was Philadelphia the birthplace of the United States of America, it was also the cradle of American pharmacy. Wyeth, McNeil, Rorer, and Warner-Lambert all trace their origins to small drug stores established there during the Civil War. In the 1880s, Mahlon N. Kline led the company into research and manufacturing of its own products. In 1891, it absorbed French, Richards & Co. founded by Harry B. French, creating Smith Kline & French. After its establishment, the company slowly expanded its inventory. By the 1920s, it had some 15,000 products ranging from aspirin to liniment. Their Eskay’s Albumenized Food was highly popular as a digestible food for infants and the disabled. Later, the company did very well with Eskay’s Tablets for Seasickness. Its specialty, Eskay’s Neurophosphates, a nerve tonic, soothed millions of people at home and abroad. In 1929, Smith Kline & French Laboratories was created to devote itself solely to research and development (R&D). During the Great Depression year of 1936, the company stepped up its efforts in R&D (in a recent contrast, many pharmaceutical companies stepped down their R&D investments during the last recession of 2008).

Resumo:
Translations of Byron’s works occupy a special place in the work of P. A. Kulish (1819– 1897). They can be divided into three parts: nine poems included in the poetry collection Borrowed kobza; Don Juan, first canto; Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage. As far as we know, Kulish was the first to attempt to translate Byron’s last, unfinished poem into Ukrainian. He chose not the “learned” type of translation, but “rehash”, which allowed more free experimentation in the field of vocabulary and rhythm. The edition was published as a separate reprint in 1891. Kulish saw his task in providing a translation of Byron’s poem Don Juan to help the younger generation of Ukrainians as a kind of textbook of life, as a means of protecting oneself from spiritual passions, from human egoism. In addition, the translation of the poem was important for Kulish in terms of developing a lyrical narrative style, which he applied in his last poem Kulish in Hell. Byron developed his own style of narration and used a confidential tone in the poem, referring to the direct experience of the reader. Kulish’s translation into Ukrainian of such a complex and rich work in terms of vocabulary, intonation, and rhyme was a rather difficult experiment. This translation is important both for the study of the creativity of Kulish and the processes of formation of the Ukrainian literary language and Ukrainian poetry. Refs 10.
