The taxonomy of the widespread camel spider, Rhagodes eylandti (Walter, 1889), is herein updated and revised by proposing three nominal taxa as its junior synonyms. These are based on data from males of two taxa, Rhagodes melanopygus nigricans Birula, 1905 and R. plumbescens (Walter, 1889), and a female of R. melanochaetus Heymons, 1902. Consequently, both sexes of R. eylandti are re-described and the validity of their morphological diagnostic characters is evaluated. Detailed morphological and morphometrical characters, as well as data on sexual dimorphism and intraspecific variations, are provided. The illustrations of type material are given for the first time. Moreover, a distribution map and ecological notes are presented.

Besides reference to the renewed attention the KPW met with since 1989, and an overview of its mode of production, I try to formulate so me notes of caution for its present-day readers. I argue that its main interest is heuristic. Viewed in context it can add details and vividness to our picture of the latter days of the Habsburg Empire.

The period of 1900-1903 saw three phases of cooperation between the Rus?sian Secret Service (Okhrana) and King Alexander Obrenovic of Serbia. It is safe to say that the Secret Service operated in Serbia as an extended arm of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, i.e. of its diplomatic mission in Belgrade. Its goal was to fortify the position of Russia in Serbia after King Alexander?s wedding and the departure of his father, ex-King Milan (who abdicated in 1889 in favour of his minor son), from the country. The Serbian King, however, benefited little from the cooperation, because he did not receive assistance from the Secret Service when he needed it most. Thus, the issue of conspiracy against his life was lightly treated throughout 1902 until his assassination in 1903. In the third and last period of cooperation, from the beginning of 1902 until the King?s assassination on 11 June 1903,1 the Russian ministries of Internal and Foreign Affairs forbade the agents to receive money from the Serbian King and relieved them of any duty regarding the protection of his life.

The “Russian Influenza”-coronavirus theory (RICT) proposes that the pandemic of 1889–1892, conventionally regarded as an influenza pandemic, was caused by the emergence of human coronavirus OC43 (HCoV-OC43) as a zoonosis of bovine coronavirus (BCoV). RICT is based on a Bayesian phylogenetic calculation of the date of the most recent common ancestor (MRCA) of HCoV-OC43 and BCoV. The theory also draws on comparison of both symptoms and some epidemiological parameters of the best studied coronavirus pandemic, i.e. COVID-19, with those reported in 1889–1892. The case is completed with circumstantial evidence involving a panzoonotic among cattle in the decade prior to the “Russian Influenza”, with characteristics suggesting it may have been caused by BCoV. In this paper, we review the Bayesian phylogenetic evidence for RICT, replicating previous studies and adding our own, in each case critically reviewing the suitability of the datasets used and the parameters applied. We conclude that the most probable date for the MRCA of HCoV-OC43 and BCoV is 1898–1902. This is a decade too late for compatibility with RICT but happens to coincide with another serious outbreak of respiratory illness, reported in both the USA and the UK, in the winter of 1899–1900.

W liście apostolskim Singulare praesidium z 12 maja 1882 r. papież Leon XIII powierzył polskim jezuitom z Galicji zadanie zreformowania Zakonu św. Sukces reformy był w dużej mierze zasługą Wojciecha Marii Baudissa SJ (1842-1926). Odegrał on kluczową rolę we wdrażaniu reformy, pełniąc przez 18 lat funkcje kierownicze w klasztorach bazyliańskich w Dobromilu (1884-1889, 1892-1902), Lwowie (6 marca - 1 lipca 1886) i Ławrowie (1889-1892). Baudissa. Analiza zebranego materiału pokazuje, że Baudiss zachęcał do odrodzenia starych zwyczajów bazyliańskich, a poprzez promowanie idei studiów filozoficznych i teologicznych pomógł wychować nowe, wysoko wykształcone pokolenie ojców bazylianów. Wojciecha Marii Baudissa czynią go czołowym rzecznikiem ścisłej unii Kościoła greckokatolickiego i rzymskokatolickiego oraz patronem pokojowego współistnienia Polaków i Ukraińców.

The article presents a little-known episode in the biography of P. Stolypin, associated with his stay in Kovno Governorate in 1889–1902 and concerning the construction of the People’s House in Kovno in 1898–99. The article is based on the materials from Russian and Polish periodicals of the late 19th – early 20th centuries. The author analyses the motives that prompted Stolypin to start building and equipping with the necessary facilities the People’s House in Kovno, which became the center of Russian culture and at the same time a place for putting into practice the slogans of the Guardianship of Public Sobriety. P. Stolypin is shown as an effective organizer of construction and a government official who defended the interests of Russia in the western governorates of the Empire.

The dystopia of the Victorian cityis ubiquitous as a trope of nineteenth- and early twentieth-century literature, appearing across a wide array of literature in fiction, poetry, pamphlets, articles, reviews, socio-demographic works, socialist tracts, and miscellaneous papers. Anti-urbanism plays a prominent role in Dickens, Kingsley, and Gissing, to name but a few, and emerges in more pointedly sociological titles such as Andrew Mearns'sThe Bitter Cry of London(1883); Thomas Escott'sEngland: Its Peoples, Polity, and Pursuits(1885); Charles Booth'sLife and Labour of the People of London(1889–1902); Ford Madox Ford'sThe Heart of the Empire(1905); and W. The ship that the oceanographer Dr William Speirs Bruce used on the Scottish National Antarctic Expedition, 1902–04, was originally a sealer named Hekla, built in Norway in 1872. In 1889 the Norwegian skipper Ragnvald Knudsen explored the northeast coast of Greenland between latitudes 74° and 75°, and in 1891–92 the ship was used by the Danish naval officer, Lieutenant C. Ryder, to explore the inner recesses of Scoresby Sund, finally visiting Angmagssalik. In 1902, re-named Scotia and captained by Tam Robertson from Peterhead, she sailed to the Weddell Sea under the leadership of Bruce. The southern winter of 1903 was spent at Laurie Island in the South Orkney Islands, and in March–April 1904 the party discovered 150 miles of previously unknown coastline of the Antarctic continent, reaching a farthest south of 74°01′S, 22°00′W. An extensive programme of marine survey and biological research was carried out. Back in the UK, Bruce sold the ship, and she returned to sealing, based in Dundee until appointed to be the first international North Atlantic Ice Patrol ship after the tragedy of Titanic. The Great War caused her to become a freighter in the English Channel area until she caught fire and was burnt out on a sandbank in the Bristol Channel on 18 January 1916.

Species currently considered belonging to the tribe Poreuomenini Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1878 are here separated; only Poreuomena Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1878 and Cestromoecha Karsch, 1893 remain in the tribe Poreuomenini, while Zeuneria Karsch, 1889 and Gravenreuthia Karsch, 1892 are transferred to the new tribe Zeuneriini Karsch, 1890. Morgenia Karsch, 1890 and Mangomaloba Sjöstedt, 1902 are moved to the new tribe Morgeniini Karsch, 1890. The new genus and species Paraporeuomena signata is described from the Tri National Sangha (TNS) (Central African Republic) and tentatively considered belonging to the tribe Poreuomenini. Its general aspect is hardly similar to that of the genus Poreuomena Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1878, but it differs remarkably in the shape of eyes, that are oval and elongate, in the presence of subocular grooves, of spines on genicular lobes of femora, and of ventral spines on fore and mid legs. Differently from Poreuomena the last tergite is not modified.

AbstractMost Galerucinae with elongated basi-metatarsus are traditionally assigned to the “Monoleptites”. As recent studies reveal, many species belong to genera outside this group and several of them show a close relationship to the type species of Galerudolphia Hincks, 1949, a substitution of the younger homonym Rudolphia Jacoby, 1899a, and need to be transferred to this group. A total of 6593 specimens from continental Africa and Arabia were examined. The genus now contains 15 species: Galerudolphia pallida (Jacoby, 1899a); Galerudolphia nigrosuturalis (Jacoby, 1897) comb. n., = Luperus nigrosuturalis Jacoby, 1897, = Luperus epipleuralis Jacoby, 1907, syn. n., = Rudolphia marginata Jacoby, 1907, syn. n., = Luperus (Calomicrus) atricornis Weise, 1907, syn. n. = Luperodes obscuricornis Weise, 1909, syn. n., = Rudolphia frontalis Laboissière, 1919, syn. n., = Luperus epipleuralis var. keniaensis Laboissière, 1919, syn. n., = Luperodes debilis Laboissière, 1940, syn. n. = Monolepta nigriventris Bryant, 1953 syn. n.; Galerudolphia capensis (Baly, 1889) comb. n., = Iphidea capensis Baly, 1889; Galerudolphia tenuicornis (Jacoby, 1899b), comb. n., = Candezea tenuicornis Jacoby, 1899b; Galerudolphia wittei (Bryant, 1958), comb. n., = Luperus wittei Bryant, 1958; Galerudolphia arabica (Medvedev, 1996), comb. n., = Monolepta arabica Medvedev, 1996. Furthermore, the newly described species: Galerudolphia viridis sp. n., G. gertiae sp. n., G. angolae sp. n., G. nigroapicalis sp. n., G. martini sp. n., G. stephani sp. n., G. namibiae sp. n., G. ruwenzorica sp. n., and G. peterhelmuti sp. n.. Rudolphia minor Weise, 1902 is not congeneric and need to be transferred to another group. The genus and all species are redescribed or described including figures of external and genitalic characters. Distribution maps and an identification key for all species are provided.

In the present article 74 Lebanese cuckoo wasps are listed, 34 of which are recorded for the first time. Two species from Lebanon are described as new for science: Philoctetes acuminatus Rosa & Boustani, sp. nov., and Chrysis mirae Rosa, sp. nov. in the C. elegans group. In addition, two new species are described to replace two species that were misidentified by Linsenmaier (1959): Chrysis villosa Rosa sp. nov. (pro Chrysis ashabadensis sensu Linsenmaier 1959, nec Radoszkowski, 1891) in the C. elegans group, and Chrysis rasmonti Rosa sp. nov. (pro Chrysis handlirschi sensu Linsenmaier 1959, nec Mocsáry, 1889) in the C. comparata group. Holopyga buyssoni Mercet, 1902 stat. nov. is raised to species level and Chrysis klio Balthasar, 1953 stat. resurr. is resurrected from previous synonymy with Chrysis varidens Abeille de Perrin, 1878. Chrysis samia Bischoff, 1910 syn. nov. is synonymised with Chrysis verna Dahlbom, 1854 and Chrysis handlirschi ab. astarte Balthasar, 1953 is considered an unavailable name. A full list of collecting dates and localities of the Lebanese records published by Linsenmaier (1959) is also provided.

This paper deals with the study of the Orthoptera Tettigoniidae found in Nouabalé-Ndoki National Park (Republic of Congo) and the comparison of the results with those previously found in the neighbouring Dzanga-Ndoki National Park (Central African Republic). The study of specimens allowed for the description of a new tribe Myllocentrini, a new genus Pseudoeurycorypha (type species: P. civilettorum n. sp. from Republic of Congo, Central African Republic, and Côte d’Ivoire), and six new species Plangiopsis nouabalensis, Leiodontocercus vicentae, Phlaurocentrum dentatum, Poreuomena derozierae, Tetraconcha maculosa and Tetraconcha laszloi from Republic of Congo. In addition, Phlaurocentrum morettanum n. sp. is described from Côte d’Ivoire, while Phlaurocentrum morettoi Massa, 2013 from Central African Republic is synonymized with P. lobatum Ragge, 1962 from Democratic Republic of Congo. Furthermore, morphological evidence allows for the inclusion of three genera, Bongeia Sjöstedt, 1902, Itokiia Sjöstedt, 1902, and Tapiena Bolívar, 1906 (presently Afrotapiena n. gen.; species type: Tapiena minor Bolívar, 1906 from Ghana), in the tribe Plangiopsidini Cadeña-Castaneda, 2015 which currently contains Plangiopsis Karsch, 1889 and Plangiola Bolívar, 1906. Moreover, new morphological data on the group of Arantia rectifolia Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1878, including Arantia tanzanica Hemp & Massa, 2017 and Arantia marginata Massa, 2021, has enabled these two species to be transferred from the subgenus Euarantia Heller, 2014 to Arantia Stål, 1874. The male of Anthracopsis gigliotosi Karny, 1907 is described, and other species of Tettigoniidae are reported for the first time from Republic of Congo. Most of the endemic species or genera are highly vulnerable to extinction due to their small distributional ranges. The results highlight the importance of the Congo River Basin as a biodiversity hotspot and underline the need to find appropriate, additional and urgent conservation measures for this area of tropical forest.

The displacement of European female Travellers in the North Estrangements in travel writing The present paper focuses on the travel accounts written by four women who decided to visit the European North in mid- and late-Nineteenth century: Ida Laura Pfeiffer’s Visit to Iceland and Scandinavian North (1853), Carla Serena’s Mon voyage personnels: souvenirs De la Baltique à la Mer Caspienne (1881), Ethel Brianna Tweedies’ A girl’s ride in Iceland (1889), and Elisa Cappelli’s In Svezia. Impressioni di viaggio (1902). The aim is to analyse these travel diaries to identify the various forms of displacement and estrangement presented to the readers. The term ‘displacement’ is here to be understood as the condition of the ‘outsider’, the perception of being ‘the Other’, whereas ‘estrangement’ could be considered the reformulation of this awareness. This paper highlights real displacements that derive from social, cultural, geographical, and gender discrepancies adopting a comparative approach, which concentrates on the textual and semantic solutions, also taking into account the interdependence of travel and writing and of space and people. These aspects intertwine with the factual reality of the travel discourse, ultimately leading to both ‘literary’ and ‘existential’ estrangements.

The representation in the Maltese Islands of the Order Orthoptera, including the Tettigonioidea, Grylloidea, Gryllotalpoidea, Tetrigoidea, Pyrgomorphoidea and Acridoidea, is reviewed for the first time in almost fifty years. A total of fifty-five species are treated, of which forty-six are accepted and nine are rejected on the basis of re-evaluated taxonomic evidence, including the re-examination of actual specimens from historical collections, and consideration of species’ distribution. Two species, namely, Platycleis sabulosa Azam, 1901 and Oecanthus dulcisonans Gorochov, 1993, are reported for the first time from the Maltese Islands. Of the confirmed taxa, the occurrence of three species, Oedipoda caerulescens caerulescens (Linnaeus, 1767), Sphingonotus obscuratus lameerei Finot, 1902, and Sphingonotus savignyi savignyi Saussure, 1884, is considered accidental and another species, Schistocerca gregaria gregaria (Forskål, 1775), is known for its dependence on episodes of passage from the African mainland, while the status of another four taxa remains unclear. Extirpation of some of the rare and localised species, such as Conocephalus conocephalus (Linnaeus, 1767), Ruspolia nitidula (Scopoli, 1786), Brachytrupes megacephalus (Lefebvre, 1827), and Heteracris adspersa (Redtenbacher, 1889), is not excluded unless appropriate conservation measures are introduced and implemented.

Although stagodontid marsupials are among the most distinctive mammals of Late Cretaceous age in North America, there remain significant gaps in knowledge of their dental anatomy, particularly that of the stratigraphically oldest genus, Eodelphis Matthew, 1916. We report here on stagodontid specimens from the Judithian Belly River Group of southeastern Alberta, Canada, that document what was until now previously unknown parts of the upper and lower premolar dentition of Eodelphis browni Matthew, 1916 and Eodelphis cutleri (Smith Woodward, 1916). The new information further confirms the distinctiveness of both nominal species of Eodelphis, and bolsters previous hypotheses suggesting a close phylogenetic relationship between E. cutleri and the advanced stagodontid Didelphodon Marsh, 1889. Although the new specimens from Alberta suggest that the problematic holotype of “Boreodon matutinus” Lambe, 1902 is an upper third premolar, a referral to Eodelphis cannot be made with confidence and the name should continue to be treated as a nomen dubium. Lastly, we report the first occurrence of Didelphodon in strata of the Belly River Group, extending the geological age of the genus into the Judithian, co-eval with species of Eodelphis, and suggesting a significant prior and as yet undiscovered evolutionary history.

The Charipinae (Cynipoidea: Figitidae) are a small group of Hymenoptera biologically characterized as being secondary parasitoids of aphids and psyllids (Hemiptera) (Menke & Evenhuis, 1991). A total of 281 species of Charipinae have been described since the first species was described by Westwood (1833) (including two fossils, one of them recently transferred in a new family, Protimaspidae). An updated world catalogue of the Charipinae is presented here, with 168 valid species: 111 included in Alloxysta Förster, 31 in Phaenoglyphis Förster, 13 in Dilyta Förster, 5 in Apocharips Fergusson, 4 in Thoreauana Girault, and 1 in Dilapothor Paretas-Martínez & Pujade-Villar, Lobopterocharips Paretas-Martínez & Pujade-Villar, Lytoxysta Kieffer and †Protocharips Kovalev. Eight species are considered as nomen nudum: Allotria fusca Dahlbom, 1842; Allotria thoreyi Dahlbom, 1842; Xystus xanthocephala Dahlbom, 1842; Allotria pusillina Giraud, 1877; Charips aphidiinaecida de Santis, 1937; Alloxysta keudelli Hedicke, 1927; Allotria amygdali Buckton, 1879 and Allotria polita Provancher, 1881. Six as nomen dubium: Allotria (Allotria) recticornis atra Kieffer, 1902; Allotria (Allotria) brevicornis Kieffer, 1902; Allotria (Allotria) orthocera Kieffer, 1902; Xystus femoralis Hartig, 1841; Charipsella laevigata Brèthes, 1913; Dilyta (Alloxysta) ignorata Kieffer, 1900. Three species are incertae sedis: Charips silvicola Belizin, 1928, Cynips atriceps Buckton, 1879 and Allotria (Allotria) testaceipes Kieffer, 1902. Two species are here synonymized: Alloxysta discreta (Förster, 1869) with A. ramulifera (Thomson, 1862) and A. megaptera (Cameron, 1889) with A. ruficollis (Cameron, 1883). Two species are raised from synonymy and considered here as valid species: Alloxysta cameroni (Cameron, 1883) and A. marshalliana (Kieffer, 1900). New names for species of Alloxysta are presented for homonimies with other Alloxysta species derived from the new combinations: Alloxysta ionescui Pujade-Villar & Ferrer-Suay new name for Alloxysta luteipes (Ionescu, 1969) n. comb., Alloxysta forshagei Pujade-Villar & Ferrer-Suay new name for Alloxysta bicolor (Ionescu, 1959) n. comb., and Alloxysta mattiasi Pujade-Villar & Ferrer-Suay new name for Alloxysta luteipes (Ionescu, 1959) n. comb. Also a new name to Phaenoglyphis is presented for the same reason before mentioned but without new combination: Phaenoglyphis hedickei Pujade-Villar & Ferrer-Suay new name for Phaenoglyphis longicornis Hedicke, 1928 and two new combinations are presented: Alloxysta rufa (Ionescu, 1959) n. comb and Alloxysta consobrina (Zetterstedt, 1838) Forshage n. comb. This catalogue includes: (i) a diagnosis of the subfamily with the most important taxonomic characters for species recognition, and illustrations of these characters; (ii) a key to genera; (iii) a list of all authors describing species of Charipinae; and (iv) a host table. The distribution of the Charipinae includes 106 Palaearctic species, 37 Nearctic, 11 Neotropical, 10 Afrotropical, 7 Oriental and 11 Australian. The species Alloxysta victrix (Westwood, 1833), A. fuscicornis (Hartig, 1841) and Phaenoglyphis villosa (Hartig, 1841) are cosmopolitan.

The Parisian Revue Illustrée (1885–1912), a middle-class periodical of broad circulation and sophisticated iconography, lets us examine the expansion of fin-de-siècle culture beyond the so-called ‘petites revues’, particularly in the years 1894–1903. Through this fashionable all-publics fortnightly, typically fin-de-siècle tales and songs on transient motives, replete with Art Nouveau images and ornamentation, reach bourgeois households. The article shows the niche category the magazine occupied through its copious and exciting iconography. Using unpublished correspondence and print material culture, it throws light on the ways its editors turned the more refined parts of the magazine into deluxe photo-mechanically produced books. The study focuses on two men, René Baschet, the Revue’s editor from 1889 to 1904, and Jérôme Doucet, his assistant editor from July 1897 to 1902, and two fin de siècle writers, Catulle Mendès and Jean Lorrain, as well as up-coming artists André Cahard, Henry Bellery-Desfontaines, Manuel Orazi, and Carloz Schwabe. The case shows that sophisticated illustration was a financial spur that came cheap while it supported the so-called ‘decadent’ writings. Further, with refined taste, numerous connexions to artists, and work for a Dutch publisher, Jérôme Doucet emerges as a key figure behind the scenes.

Mastigolejeunea (Spruce 1884: 100) Stephani (1889: 257) is a pantropical genus with 16 extant species (Sukkharak & Gradstein 2014a). The centre of diversity is Southeast Asia with 10 species occurring in the region. This genus is very similar to Thysananthus Lindenb. in Lehmann (1844: 24) and the two genera can be separated by the presence of an entire perianth in Mastigolejeunea and toothed in Thysananthus (Sukkharak 2014; Sukkharak & Gradstein 2014a). Three species, M. humilis (Gottsche in Gottsche et al. 1845: 299) Schiffner (1893: 129), M. indica Stephani (1912: 776) and M. repleta (Taylor 1846: 392) Evans (1902: 131), have so far been reported in China (He 1997; Mizutani 1986; Piippo 1990). In the course of our studies on Chinese Ptychanthoideae Mizutani (1961: 146), we found a new record of M. virens (Ångström 1873: 131) Stephani (1912: 776) for the ptychanthoid flora of China. Mastigolejeunea virens has been reported from Australia, Indomalesia, Seychelles and the tropical Pacific region (Sukkharak & Gradstein 2014a). We report the species here for Hainan, China, which is its northernmost locality. In addition, we newly report the occurrence of asymmetrical underleaves associated with left-right symmetry in M. virens based on our study of specimens collected in China and Thailand.

In 1891, Luther H. Gulik, a prominent member of the international leadership of the YMCA of the United States, established the triangle as the YMCA symbol. He saw the triangle as a symbol imbued with Christian beliefs that would become the spearhead of a worldwide missionary movement. About the Triangle, Gulik wrote:The triangle stands . . . for the symmetrical man, each part developed with reference to the whole, and not merely with reference to itself. . . . What authority have we for believing that this triangle idea is correct? It is scriptural. . . . Such statements as, “Thou shalt love the Lord Thy God with all they heart and soul and mind and strength,” indicate . . . the scriptural view . . . that the service of the Lord includes the whole man. The words, which in the Hebrew and Greek are translated “strength,” refer in both cases entirely to physical strength. As the YMCA International Committee's first secretary for athletic work (1889–1902), Gulik had strong reason to create a symbol that could be recognized anywhere in the world. He was a firm believer in the expanding Muscular Christianity movement, which glorified patriotic duty and manliness expressed through athletics, and a strong believer in the civilizing agency of missionary Protestantism as it sought to establish a United States Christian righteous empire.

Niels Thorkild Rovsing (1862 to 1927) was a Danish surgeon. His eponyms include the Rovsing sign of acute appendicitis, the Rovsing syndrome (abdominal pain in a horseshoe kidney), the Rovsing operation I (for polycystic kidney), and the Rovsing operation II (to separate a fused “horseshoe” kidney). He received his M.D. degree in 1885 and his Ph.D. in 1889 from Copenhagen University. Rovsing practiced surgery from 1892 to 1902 at the Queen Louise Children's Hospital and the Red Cross Hospital, both located in Copenhagen. He became Professor of Surgery in 1899 and Director of Surgery at the Royal Frederiks Hospital in 1904. Rovsing earned international recognition for his innovative urological surgery. Together with his colleague, Eilert A. Tscherning, Rovsing founded the Danish Surgical Society (Dansk Kirurgisk Selskap) in 1908. His advocacy for antisepsis and Listerism advanced his notoriety and exemplified his medical leadership. His clarion call for a modern hospital led to the construction of the Copenhagen University Hospital (Rigshospitalet) that opened in 1910. Rovsing was an Honorary Member of the Edinburgh Medico-Chirurgical Society and the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland. Rovsing served briefly as Denmark's Minister of Education in 1920. He died in 1927 from cardiac failure and laryngeal cancer.

This essay argues that by studying parodies of detective fiction from the turn of the twentieth century, one can envision a more complete history of the detective genre's development and the alternate paths it might have pursued. Mark Twain's A Double-Barrelled Detective Story (1902), Melville Davisson Post's The Strange Schemes of Randolph Mason (1896), and Robert Louis Stevenson and Lloyd Osbourne's The Wrong Box (1889) instruct the reader to regard detective fiction as a genre about the production of the corpse and the transnational economic systems that generated it, rather than the ratiocinative mastery of the detective. These three parodies of detective fiction burlesque incipient genre texts from the nineteenth century by painstakingly regurgitating the global political and economic stakes that set the stage for local mysteries, even when they defer rather than advance the plot. They also foreground the corpse-as-spectacle by engineering human remains that resist forensic elucidation and are the product of bizarre and cataclysmic histories of violence. In emphasizing detective fiction's nineteenth-century literary antecedents, Twain's, Post's, and Stevenson and Osbourne's detective parodies indicate that the genre might have pursued a different direction, one where its dominant element was the disturbing debasement of a body by a complex circuit of global political and economic relations.

Although the importance of the African role in the South African War (1889-1902) is now recognized, this study of the Bakgatala ba ga Kgafela is the first to demonstrate an African perception of events and argue that the Kgatla initiated military action and pursued goals independent of a simple British vs. Boer formula. The war created major economic and political opportunities for the Kgatla, a people physically separated and colonially partitioned. Half the Kgatla lived in the Kgatla Reserve of the British-ruled Bechuanaland Protectorate, and the other half lived in the Saulspoort area of the western Transvaal under Boer rule. Their leader, Linchwe I (1874–1924), maintained his capital at Mochudi in the Protectorate and received only partial allegiance from the Saulspoort Kgatia. Soon after the war began, Linchwe involved his regiments actively in fighting alongside the British in the Protectorate and raiding on their own in the Transvaal in an effort to eliminate Boer settlement and political control in Saulspoort and other areas of the western Transvaal. Kgatia regiments also emptied Boer farms of cattle which, in addition to restoring the national herd decimated by the 1897 rinderpest, Linchwe used in establishing his political hold over the Saulspoort Kgatia. Protectorate officials were grateful for Kgatia support, but Linchwe disguised the extent and nature of Kgatia operations and concealed from the British his political objectives. Linchwe's campaign made possible in the years following the war the reunification of the Kgatia under his authority, the distribution of wealth among all his people and the reduction of colonial interference in the political lives of his people.

In 1711, official relations were established between Russia and Montenegro. Since 1715, Russia began to pay a constant financial subsidy to Montenegro. Over the years, its amount was growing, more and more new items of expenditure were added to the main subsidy. Based on documents, we note a special increase in these payments at the period of the Great Eastern Crisis of 1875-1878, during the Montenegrin-Turkish War of 1876-1877 and the Russian-Turkish war of 1877-1878. Because of the latter, the Berlin Treaty was signed, officially securing the independence of Montenegro and its territorial expansion. In the post-war decade, Russia repeatedly provided loans to Montenegro for various needs, including military ones, and helped, almost annually, by sending foodstuffs. In 1889, two dynastic marriages were contracted between the Russian Empire and the Montenegrin principality. Before this, Petersburg had covered all the external debts of the Principality. Since 1895, Russia took upon itself the financing of one battalion of the Montenegrin army, and since 1902 of two battalions with a total cost of 331 thousand rubles. In our opinion, financial “injections” were an important measure of Russian-Montenegrin relations, which can be used to judge the interest of the Russian Empire in Montenegro, as well as the significance of this small Balkan country for the Russian Foreign Ministry’s policy plans.

Six species are described as new: Elampus gladiator Rosa, sp. nov. (Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, and Uttar Pradesh), Chrysis aswathiae Rosa, sp. nov. (Tamil Nadu, elegans species group), Chrysis baldocki Rosa, sp. nov. (Tamil Nadu, smaragdula group), Chrysis bernasconii Rosa, sp. nov. (Tamil Nadu, subsinuata group), Chrysis polita Rosa, sp. nov. (West Bengal, Uttaranchal, Myanmar, ignita group), and Chrysis travancoriana Rosa, sp. nov. (Kerala and Tamil Nadu, praecipua group). Six species are newly recorded: Chrysis hecate Mocsáry, 1889; Chrysis jalala Nurse, 1902; Chrysis obscura Smith, 1860; Istiochrysis ziliolii Rosa & Xu, 2016; Praestochrysis furcifera (Bingham, 1903); Primeuchroeus siamensis (Bischoff, 1910). Two new synonymies are proposed: Chrysis abuensis Nurse, 1902, syn. nov. of Chrysis wroughtoni du Buysson, 1896b; Chrysis nursei Bingham, 1903 syn. nov. of Chrysis gujaratica Nurse, 1903a. Holopyga (Hedychridium) virescens Mocsáry, 1914 is transferred to the genus Hedychridium Abeille de Perrin, 1878; the name Hedychridium virescens (Mocsáry, 1914) results a secondary homonym of Hedychridium virescens du Buysson, 1908 and it is here replaced with the new name Hedychridium mocsaryi Rosa, nom. nov. Chrysis cotesi du Buysson, 1893, sp. resurr. is here revalidated from the previous synonymy with Chrysis palliditarsis Spinola, 1838. Chrysis bahadur Nurse, 1903a is transferred from the ignita group to the splendidula group, Chrysis bhavanae Bingham, 1903 is transferred from the ignita group to the maculicornis group, and Chrysis thakur is transferred from the smaragdula group to the oculata group. Chrysis nila Bingham, 1903 and Chrysis variipes Mocsáry, 1911 are included in the newly established nila group. Spinolia kashmirae Kimsey in Kimsey & Bohart, 1991 is classified as unnecessary replacement name. The name Parnopes oberthuri du Buysson, 1904 is here emendated into Parnopes oberthueri (currently Cephaloparnops oberthueri). Potential erroneous data, misidentifications and dubious distributional records that may exist in the literature are also identified. We examined almost all type specimens, excluding taxa described by Cameron and Smith. We provide a key to Indian genera, including those expected for the country and not yet recorded, and colour images of type and non-type specimens belonging to 82 species.

This study examines the type, change, and characteristics of Seonyurak (船遊樂) dancers' clothing, based on 12 kinds of uigwe (royal protocols) that recorded Seonyurak performances. Seonyurak, which used to be handed down as gyobang jeongjae (courtesan's dance) in local areas, was introduced into the court due to the seonsanggi system after Injo’s Rebellion As a local performance presented to government officials, who were going abroad as envoys, became performed in the royal court, the venue, name, and performance content and method of Seonyurak were changed. The first performance of Seonyurak was recorded in Wonhaeng eulmyo jeongri uigwe (園幸乙卯整理儀軌) in 1795, and it was adopted as an official court dance in Gichuk jinchan uigwe (己丑進饌儀軌) in 1829. The clothing of jipsa, assistants, has been recorded since Gichuk jinchan uigwe (1829) while that of donggi, young female dancers, has been recorded since Musin jinchan uigwe Therefore, the clothing of Seonyurak performers was settled in 1849, and it was passed down until 1902, which was the period of the Empire of Korea. It is possible that Seonyurak performed in 1795 was in a similar form to Baettaragi (排打羅其), another courtesan's dance performed in the northwestern region, since its performance venue was in Hwaseong, not the palace. Among them, it can be seen that donggi in chaeseon, a boat located in the center of Seonyurak performance, served as sogyo (a position of military officer) of Baettaragi, which was confirmed by Bongsudang jinchando However, donggi performed in Baettaragi wore red cheollik, the uniform of danghagwan (officials of the lower terrace), while those in Seonyurak wore navy cheollik, the uniform of dangsanggwan (officials of the upper terrace). Later, since Gichuk jinchan uigue (1829), donggi playing the role of sogyo was changed into jipno, and the role of donggi was played by jipsa. The clothing of Seonyurak jipsa was a military uniform of danghagwan, which was worn by donggi in Bongsudang jinchando (1795) and lasted in the last banquet in 1902. Seonyurak jipsa had worn a military uniform as a support garment for cheollik since Imjin jinchan (1889) until Imin jinyeon (1902). Before that, it is presumed that they wore a green daechangui as a support garment for cheollik. As for the clothing of Seonyurak jipno, donggi wore a red danui (丹衣), the uniform of the Yeonhwadae dance, in Gichuk jinchan uigwe (1829), and later on they wore green dangui (唐衣) since Musin jinchan uigwe (1848) until the last banquet of the Empire of Korea. It is confirmed that they wore a red skirt and green dangui in Imin jinyeondo (1902). Donggi wore a red skirt and a yellow top in Musin jinchando (戊申進饌圖), Jeongjae jinchando (丁亥進饌圖), and Sinchuk jinchando (辛丑進饌圖) whereas they wore a green dangui only in Imin jinyeondo (壬寅進宴圖). Stand-by dancers of Seonyurak wore the basic clothing of court dance performed by yeoryeong (female entertainers).
