The purpose of this work is to generalize, in the context of 1-motives, the height pairings constructed by B. Mazur and J. Tate on abelian varieties. Following their approach, we consider ρ-splittings of the Poincaré biextension of a 1-motive and require that they be compatible with the canonical linearization associated to the biextension. We establish results concerning the existence of such ρ-splittings. When ρ is unramified this is guaranteed if the monodromy pairing of the 1-motive considered is non-degenerate. For ramified ρ, the ρ-splitting is constructed from a pair of splittings of the Hodge filtrations of the de Rham realizations of the 1-motive and its dual. This generalizes previous results by R. Coleman and Y. Zarhin for abelian varieties. These ρ-splittings are then used to define a global pairing between rational points of a 1-motive and its dual. We also provide local pairings between zero cycles and divisors on a variety, which is done by applying the previous results to its Picard and Albanese 1-motives

Interest in sport, especially in soccer has been increasing in Turkey. Consequently, sport clubs should ascertain the reasons why people attend sporting events and what motivates them to attend in order not to lose their interest. From this point
the purpose of this study was to examine the motivational factors affecting spectator attendance of soccer games in Turkey. In order to measure the sport fan motivations of the spectators, the Turkish version of Motivational Scale for Sport Consumption (MSSC) was distributed to 602 spectators in three different Super League Soccer games with the systematic sampling procedure. Results of this study indicated that the physical skills of the athletes, aesthetics related with the game of soccer and the achievement motives are the most effective motives in explaining spectators&rsquo
decisions to attend soccer games in Turkey. On the other hand, escape, drama, and social interaction motives were found to be the least important motives of the Turkish soccer spectators. The findings of this study also revealed that the more frequent ticket consumers&rsquo
achievement and acquisition of knowledge motivations were higher than the other consumer types in spectator segmentation. Multiple regression analysis revealed that 27 % of the variance in future ticket consumption intentions can be accounted for by the linear combination of 6 of the 12 variables including past ticket consumption frequency, fan identification with the team, and the motives of achievement, acquisition of knowledge, aesthetics, and social interaction. These findings indicated that Turkish spectators are mainly motivated by the core product of the sport, the game itself. However, previous studies indicated that overarching motives (escape, social interaction) should be one of the aspects of the game attendance. Thus, findings of this study showed that Turkish spectators do not perceive the attending a sport game as a social and stress releasing activity. In conclusion, motivations are the needs of the sport consumers, therefore, Turkish sport clubs should try to fulfill the needs of their customers, in this case, acquiring skilled soccer players, playing good team soccer, and playing combatively to win games should be the prerequisites of the sport clubs to not to lose their spectators&rsquo
interest in following their team from the stadium.

Anxiety Sensitivity (AS) consists of beliefs that the experience of anxiety symptoms leads to illness or additional anxiety. The aim of the present study was to examine the factor structure of the Turkish version of Anxiety Sensitivity Index&
#8211
Revised (ASI-R), and to investigate associations among AS, alcohol use and drinking motives in university students and alcohol dependent inpatients. The participants were 411 university students (225 females and 186 males) and 55 (3 females and 52 males) alcohol dependent inpatients. All participants were administered ASI-R, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory-Trait Form, Beck Depression Inventory, Drinking Motives Questionnaire-Revised, and Demographic Information Form. Exploratory factor analyses revealed four lower order factors of the ASI-R: (1) fear of respiratory symptoms
(2) fear of cardiovascular symptoms
(3) fear of cognitive dyscontrol
and (4) fear of publicly observable anxiety symptoms. ANOVA revealed that the frequency and amount of alcohol use were significantly higher in male students than females. Males reported more alcohol use for Coping and Conformity Motives than did females. Regression analyses revealed that only fear of cognitive dyscontrol significantly predicted hazardous alcohol use of students. Coping Motives significantly predicted alcohol use after controlling the effects of demographics, depression and ASI-R lower order factors in students using alcohol. Fear of publicly observable anxiety symptoms significantly predicted frequency of alcohol use in students using alcohol. Students reported using alcohol mostly for Enhancement, Social, Coping, and Conformity Motives, respectively. Students with high AS reported more alcohol use for Coping, Social and Conformity Motives than those with moderate and low AS. Fear of cognitive dyscontrol and fear of publicly observable anxiety symptoms explained a significant variance of drinking motives in students. In alcohol dependent inpatients, only fear of respiratory symptoms had a significant correlation with Coping Motives. Patients reported having used alcohol mostly for Coping, Enhancement, Social, and Conformity Motives, respectively. Coping and Enhancement Motives were significantly correlated with alcohol use. Results were discussed within the findings in the literature.

Artusa, Marco. Electronic Thesis or Diss., Bordeaux, 2024. http://www.theses.fr/2024BORD0228.

The goal of this thesis is twofold. First, we build a topological cohomology theory for the Weil group of p-adic fields. Secondly, we use this theory to prove duality theorems for such fields, which manifest as Pontryagin duality between locally compact abelian groups. These results improve existing duality theorems and give them a topological flavour. Condensed Mathematics allow us to reach these objectives, providing a framework where it is possible to do algebra with topological objects. We define and study a cohomology theory for condensed groups and pro-condensed groups, and we apply it to the Weil group of a p-adic field, considered as a pro-condensed group. The resulting cohomology groups are proved to be locally compact abelian groups of finite ranks in some special cases. This allows us to enlarge the local Tate duality to a more general category of non-necessarily discrete coefficients, where it takes the form of a Pontryagin duality between locally compact abelian groups. In the last part of the thesis, we use the same framework to recover a Weil-version of the Tate duality with coefficients in abelian varieties and more generally in 1-motives, expressing those dualities as perfect pairings between condensed abelian groups. To do this, we associate to every algebraic group, resp. 1-motive, a condensed abelian group, resp. a complex of condensed abelian groups, with an action of the (pro-condensed) Weil group. We call this association the condensed Weil-´etale realisation. We show the existence of a condensed Poincar´e pairing for abelian varieties and we prove a condensed-Weil version of the Tate duality with coefficients in abelian varieties, which improves the correspondent result of Karpuk. Lastly, we exhibit a condensed Poincar´e pairing for 1-motives. We show that this pairing is compatible with the weight filtration and we prove a duality theorem with coefficients in 1-motives, which improves a result of Harari-Szamuely

Resumo:
Traditionally, regional endowments are viewed as external variables when it comes to location choices of companies. In most concepts on location choices and regional economics companies are thought to view the local labour market, the local innovation system or the general quality of life in a region as given and chose the location that best suits the company's needs. Increasingly however, scholars from different research fields are providing arguments to reverse that view and show that there can be good reasons for a company to engage in improving its location despite implicit externalities. In this paper we try to systematically analyse issue of corporate engagement in regions. We will show how strong and in which fields companies engage in their respective region, how this engagement can be related to their existing regional integration and what differences appear between industries and types of companies in this respect. In this study we draw upon extensive interviews with over thirty companies from three industrial sectors in the Austrian region of Styria: the metals industry, which dates back to medieval times and has gone through a deep process of economic restructuring, the automotive industry, the first industry in which a comprehensive cluster policy approach was applied in Austria and the software industry, a rather young industry that experienced high growth rates in the past years. We will conclude that even though there are differences between the industries and types of companies in terms of scope and scale of regional integration and regional engagement, there is a strong correlation between the two: the higher the regional integration, the higher corporate regional engagement and vice versa.

One of the cornerstones of the R system for statistical computing is the multitude of contributed packages making an extremely broad range of statistical techniques and other quantitative methods freely available. This study investigates which factors are the crucial determinants responsible for the participation of the package authors in the R project. For this purpose a survey was conducted among R package authors, collecting data on different types of participation in the R project, three psychometric scales (hybrid forms of motivation, work design characteristics, and values), as well as various specie-demographic factors. These data are analyzed using item response theory and generalized linear models, showing that the most important determinants for participation are a hybrid form of motivation and the knowledge characteristics of the work design. Other factors are found to have less impact or influence only specific aspects of participation. (authors' abstract)

Resumo:
Children and adolescents are now using online communication to form and/or maintain relationships with strangers and/or friends. Relationships in real life are important for children and adolescents in identity formation and general development. However, social relationships can be difficult for those who experience feelings of loneliness and social anxiety. The current study aimed to replicate and extend research conducted by Valkenburg and Peter (2007b), by investigating differences in online communication patterns between children and adolescents with and without selfreported loneliness and social anxiety. Six hundred and twenty-six students aged 10-16 years completed a questionnaire survey about the amount of time they engaged in online communication, the topics they discussed, who they communicated with, and their purposes of online communication. Following Valkenburg and Peter (2007b), loneliness was measured with a shortened version of the UCLA Loneliness Scale (Version 3) developed by Russell (1996), whereas social anxiety was assessed with a sub-scale of the Social Anxiety Scale for Adolescents (La Greca & Lopez, 1998). The sample was divided into four groups of children and adolescents: 220 were “non-socially anxious and non-lonely”, 139 were “socially anxious but not lonely”, 107 were “lonely but not socially anxious”, and 159 were “lonely and socially anxious”. A one-way ANOVA and chi-square tests were conducted to evaluate the aforementioned differences between these groups. The results indicated that children and adolescents who reported being lonely used online communication differently from those who did not report being lonely. Essentially, the former communicated online more frequently about personal things and intimate topics, but also to compensate for their weak social skills and to meet new people. Further analyses on gender differences within lonely children and adolescents revealed that boys and girls communicated online more frequently with different partners. It was concluded that for these vulnerable individuals online communication may fulfil needs of self-disclosure, identity exploration, and social interactions. However, future longitudinal studies combining a quantitative with a qualitative approach would better address the relationship between Internet use and psychosocial well-being. The findings also suggested the need for further exploration of how such troubled children and adolescents can use the Internet beneficially.

Gambling becomes a source of difficulties of varying severity for some individuals whereas it is a positive experience for most of other people. Although gambling continues to be an entertaining activity for the majority of gambling individuals, prevalence rates suggest that pathological gambling is not low compared to other types of diagnosis. Most of the data with respect to gambling is from Western gambling literature, whereas research investigating the associated features of problem and pathological gamblers are very limited in the Turkish sample. The present study aimed to adapt two gambling-related instruments into Turkish and subsequently to examine the contributory roles of gambling participation, personality, affect, cognition, and motives of Turkish gamblers on gambling severity and gambling-related harm. The present study sample consisted of 357 males who were gambling in the sports and horse-races betting terminals. The findings pointed out it is important to conduct gambling research with Turkish samples considering the gambling severity and harm scores of the participants. The Turkish versions of Gambling-Related Cognitions Scale and Gambling Motives Scale showed promising psychometric properties with respect to their reliability and validity analyses. Besides, relatively higher negative affect, neuroticism, gambling-related cognitions, avoidance motive, and gambling participation were found to be associates of probable pathological gambling among Turkish regular gambling individuals. Moreover, the relationships of gambling cognitions / motives and gambling severity were mediated by the gambling participation. The main findings and related findings of the present study together with their implications are reported and discussed within the relevant gambling literature.

In this essay I want to illuminate how teachers describe their work to increase motivation for reading in first grade. The teachers views on the concept of motivation and its complexes. Relevant research shows that there is a clear link between pupils learning and their motivation.

The purpose of this essay is to contribute with knowledge about how teachers describe their work to increase pupils’ motivation for reading in first grade.

The survey was conducted during the latter part of autumn -09 and the method that was used was qualitative interviews. Three teachers with long experience of first grade were each interviewed.

The results showed that all the teachers found it difficult to concretely explain their views on the concept of motivation. According to the three informants this is rarely discussed in school. They shared a perception that motivation was found inside each pupil and that it could be satisfied in different ways. The teachers also described how they worked to increase pupils' motivation for reading. A few points they described and felt were important to pupils' motivation for reading was; the reading aloud importance, good reading - role models, the reading–book instruments and a books content.

Food safety and the impact in the environment caused by the current food production based on the use of pesticides and high degree of mechanization have become topics of discussion in the international community. Given this scenario, the organic production model, which has chemical inputs and exemption in the preservation of the ecosystem their fundamental values, emerges as an alternative proposal. The organic products market showed considerable growth over the past decade in Brazil. The aim of this work was to raise the reasons which influence consumers to purchase organic products. It was used a research method called survey, of exploratory and descriptive nature, with 44 individuals, fairs and specialty stores visitors. Data collection took place through a form with scales developed to indicate the possible factors influencing purchase of organic products in Rio de Janeiro, from literature review. The statistical tools used for the processing of data were descriptive analysis and testing of average difference between regular and non-regular consumers, with or without children, considering different age groups. The results show that the main reasons for buying organic are the exemption of pesticides and the benefits to the health of the consumer and of his family. However, price and proximity of the fairs to consumer homes have emerged as important factors for the development of this market.

The aim of this work is to develop the program proposed by S. Bloch, L. Barbieri-Viale and V. Srinivas of generalizing Deligne mixed Hodge structures providing a new cohomology theory for complex algebraic varieties. In other words to construct and study cohomological invariants, of (proper) complex algebraic schemes, which are finer than the associated mixed Hodge structures in the case of singular spaces.

The analysis of two novels by Rachel Jardim, Vazio pleno: relatório do cotidiano (1976) e Inventário das cinzas (1980) aims at demonstrating the emphasis of these works on an intimist character. Such an aspect arises throughout the exploration of the biographical space – which becomes evident in the implications of the incorporation of autobiographical traces in the narrative tissue – and also springs up throughout the elements that establish a dialectical relationship within the pair exterior/interior. The present work is based on the survey and the analysis of structural elements and common themes found in the two novels, fact that supported the elaboration of a methodological process designed on the distribution of the data in “cells” and “motives”. These motives are gathered in two blocks, called “cells”, which unite to form a mosaic made of itemized matters that revolve around intimacy. The detailed analysis of the two cells is distributed in two chapters under the titles of Traços autobiográgicos and A dialética exterior/interior. Due to the fact that the concept of intimacy, still slightly investigated by the literary Brazilian historiography, receives many different names, we look forward to its definition as well as to the demarcation of its main features. We also focus on the ways the artist novel and some principles of the Romantic aesthetics related to the writing of the “I” frame the corpus mainly in what concerns the thematization of the pertinent procedures linked to the literary acts of reading and writing. The analysis is grounded on concepts taken from the Literary Theory and from distinct theorist ́s stands not only in what concerns to intimacy in Brazilian Literature but also related to Rachel Jardim ́s place within the Brazilian literary history. The analytical proceedings show the connection between Rachel Jardim ́s works and the intimist thread in literature within the scope of the literary Brazilian system.

There is a wonderful conjecture of Bloch and Kato that generalizes both the analytic Class Number Formula and the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture. The conjecture itself was generalized by Fukaya and Kato to an equivariant formulation. In this thesis, I provide a new proof for the equivariant local Tamagawa number conjecture in the case of Tate motives for unramified fields, using Iwasawa theory and (φ,Γ)-modules, and provide some work towards extending the proof to tamely ramified fields.

We carry out certain automorphic and l-adic computations, the former extending results of Beilinson and Scholl, and the latter using ideas of Kato and Kings, related to explicit motivic cohomology classes on modular varieties. Under mild local and global conditions on a modular form, these give exactly the coordinates of the Deligne and l-adic realizations of said motivic cohomology class in the eigenspace attached to the modular form (Theorem 4.1.1). Assuming Kato's Main Conjecture and a Leopoldt-type conjecture, we deduce (a weak version of) the Tamagawa Number Conjecture for the motive attached to a modular form, twisted by a negative integer.

Resumo:
This virtual platform study enhances the building of stronger social communities. It researches the influence of end-user motives on social relationship dimensions by highlighting the mediating pathways of social connectivities. Developers and businesses can enlist the findings to customise their virtual end-user-targeted solutions and then deliver value-added virtual services and products. The relationship between end-user motives and the formation of social capital remains critical in understanding casual influences; however, there has been no previous research looking at this relationship by considering social connectivities. Previous research on end-user motives and social capital within one type of online gaming environment indicated some driving factors behind the development and formation of social capital in virtual worlds. This study focuses on active end-users participating in one of three substantive virtual world platforms to examine whether end-user motives influence their social capital dimensions. Three basic theories—gratification, social relationship and social capital—underpin this study's social capital motives model. In this model, end-user motive antecedents— achievement, control, escapism and friendship—are linked to social connectivities through bridging and bonding, which, in turn, are linked to the social capital's cognitive, relational and structural dimensions. An online global survey in English provided 274 valid and usable cases from three different virtual worlds. A quantitative approach is used to test the proposed research framework model. The resulting empirically tested social capital motives model was bootstrap-validated using AMOS 22. The model delivered a high-quality fit across all relevant fit indices. The social capital motives model verified 12 hypothesised paths as significant and theoretically justified. Here, achievement and escapism show a significant positive effect on bridging social connectivities, whereas control, escapism and friendship show a significant positive effect on bonding social connectivities. Next, bridging social connectivities shows a strong positive effect on bonding social connectivities. Bridging social connectivities also offers a positive influence on cognitive social capital. Bonding social connectivities positively affects cognitive, relational and structural social capital dimensions. Finally, both the cognitive and structural dimensions are found to have a significant effect on the resulting relational social capital dimension. The social capital motives model contributes to research within international business (particularly virtual world businesses and social media) and information technology platforms. Theoretically, this study's two-stage Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) path model integrates three theories and redefines bonding and bridging as social connectivities. This study shows end-user motives can indirectly influence social capital dimensions through social connectivities. Thus, researchers investigating the formulation of social capital in virtual worlds can apply the social capital motives model as a starting point when developing their more advance social capital research models. Businesses can engage the social capital motives model to further motivate their end-users to generate greater social capital, which, in turn, will strengthen interactions among existing end-users and, consequently, attract new end-users.

Although the term "Art Lover" is something that our society uses in everyday language, little is known about what this term means. How do museum visitors characterize the Art Lover? How does an Art Lover's experience of art differ from that of a Non-Art Lover? In answering these two questions, this study seeks to understand a museum visitor's self-identification as an Art Lover and the role that this identification plays in the quality of their museum experience. Using a framework of Ethnomethodology and Marketing Research techniques, a written questionnaire consisting of thirty-five questions was administered. In April 2003, over one-hundred visitors to the Montreal Museum of Fine Art completed the questionnaire. Seven visitors participated in follow-up interviews. It was found that 22% of museum attendees in this study do not consider themselves Art Lovers. Analysis of both questionnaire and interview results revealed that all participants--regardless of their love for art--shared many of the same responses, emotions, and behaviours. However, in comparing the experiences of Art Lovers to Non-Art Lovers, a marked difference was found in the relative intensities and values associated with these motives, emotions, and behaviours. Art Lovers expressed a high level of intensity in their desire to seek out museum experiences and subsequently reported an elevated level of satisfaction with their experience of the exhibition. The results of this study suggest that to consider oneself an Art Lover is directly and positively related to the quality of an individual's museum experience. This study also suggests that a significant proportion of museum visitors are people who do not consider themselves Art Lovers and that museums need to better address this segment of their public.
