The coordination of biological processes with daily and seasonal changes in the environment is important for the survival of photosynthetic organisms such as plants. A signalling pathway was previously identified that communicates temporal and light quality information from the circadian oscillator to the chloroplast in Arabidopsis thaliana. This signalling mechanism operates through the action of a nuclear encoded protein called SIGMA FACTOR5 (SIG5), which confers promoter specificity to the plastid encoded plastid RNA polymerase (PEP) in the chloroplast where it causes rhythmic transcription of psbD. In Arabidopsis, there are six sigma factors encoded in the nucleus (SIGMA FACTOR1 (SIG1)-SIG6). I conducted structural homology modelling of the six sigma factors to gain insights about their specificity and regulation. I also identified in the laboratory a novel low-temperature signalling pathway involving SIG5 that underpins optimum plant performance under both low and freezing temperatures. I demonstrated that this pathway increases freezing tolerance and photosynthetic efficiency at low temperatures, identified upstream and downstream regulators of the pathway, and demonstrated close integration with the circadian oscillator. This suggests the pathway is of considerable biological importance in plants and could be targeted to improve crop yields under uncertain climate conditions. It is in this context that I then investigated if the pathway operates under fluctuating natural conditions (e.g. during the day and across seasons) using Arabidopsis halleri subsp. gemmifera, which is a perennial relative of the annual A. thaliana. The data revealed seasonal differences in the amplitude of gene transcript accumulation in the signalling pathway and further analysis through statistical modelling revealed the major environmental inputs to the pathway under natural fluctuating conditions. Finally, using the rare algae Aegagropila linnaei (marimo) daily rhythms of buoyancy driven by photosynthesis were found to be a novel output of the circadian oscillator in plants.

Studies have found substantial differences in health-related behavior and health care usage between educational groups, which may explain part of the well-documented educational gradient in health. The allocative efficiency hypothesis offers a behavioral explanation for these reported differences. According to this theory, the educated possess more health knowledge and information, allowing them to make better health choices. We perform a mediation analysis to study this mechanism using original survey data from the Philippines, a lower-middle-income country. As an extension of previous empirical research, we construct a comprehensive index that captures different dimensions of health knowledge. Using generalized propensity scores, we find strong support for the allocative efficiency argument. Schooling is significantly associated with health knowledge levels, which explain up to 69% of the education effect on health lifestyle. This corresponds to twice the mediation strength of economic resources, suggesting an important role of this factor in explaining education effects on health decisions.

The present paper provides first empirical evidence on the relationship between market size and the number of firms in the healthcare industry for a transition economy. We estimate market-size thresholds required to support different numbers of suppliers (firms) for three occupations in the healthcare industry in a large number of distinct geographic markets in Slovakia, taking into account the spatial interaction between local markets. The empirical analysis is carried out for three time periods (1995, 2001 and 2010) which characterise different stages of the transition process. Our results suggest that the relationship between market size and the number of firms differs both across industries and across periods. In particular, we find that pharmacies, as the only completely liberalised market in our dataset, experience the largest change in competitive behaviour during the transition process. Furthermore, we find evidence for correlation in entry decisions across administrative borders, suggesting that future market analysis should aim to capture these regional effects.

We present new Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of the dust continuum and [C II] 158 mu m fine structure line emission toward a far-infrared-luminous quasar, ULAS J131911.29+095051.4 at z = 6.13, and combine the new Cycle 1 data with ALMA Cycle 0 data. The combined data have an angular resolution of similar to 0.'' 3, and resolve both the dust continuum and the [C II] line emission on a few kiloparsec scales. The [C II] line emission is more irregular than that of the dust continuum emission, which suggests different distributions between the dust and the [C II] emitting gas. The combined data confirm the [C II] velocity gradient that we had previously detected in a lower-resolution ALMA image from the Cycle 0 data alone. We apply a tilted ring model to the [C II] velocity map to obtain a rotation curve, and constrain the circular velocity to be 427 +/- 55 kms(-1) at a radius of 3.2 kpc with an inclination angle of 34 degrees. We measure the dynamical mass within the 3.2 kpc region to be 13.4(-5.3)(+7.8) x 10(10) M-circle dot. This yields a black-hole and host galaxy mass ratio of 0.020(-0.007)(+0.013), which is about 4(-2)(+3) times higher than that of the present-day M-BH/M-bulge ratio. This suggests that the supermassive black hole grows the bulk of its mass before the formation of most of the stellar mass in this quasar host galaxy in the early universe.

This thesis explores why shaʿbī (roughly, ‘ordinary’) Moroccans so often talk about their domestic workers as daughters, what this means for workers and employers, and how this is changing as community gives way to market. It brings together ethnographic study of urban shaʿbī society, of unmarried rural women who work as domestics, and of the communities from which the latter migrate. Drawing on anthropological discussions of kinship and fosterage, the thesis examines the fading tradition of ‘bringing up’ in which, according to a moral economy, a ‘known’ rural girl could properly be placed in the homes of wealthier Moroccans until marriage. This is giving way to new arrangements in which ‘unknown’ workers are paid a wage and may not stay long, but in which the ethics of charity, religious reward and gratitude still inform expectations from both sides. Geared to play out among neighbours, or at least well-known clients, over a lifetime, these ethics are being disrupted by the easy-come-easy-go of strangers. The thesis contributes to some fundamental concerns of economic anthropology: the atomisation of market exchange, the growing importance of physical marketplaces, and the meanings encoded in a monetary wage versus payment in kind. By putting together perspectives from domestics’ leisure time and life back home, it also questions the relationship between the commodification of labour and individualism. Finally, the thesis discusses a draft law which, if enforced, would mean employing domestics no longer made sense for shaʿbī Moroccans, state intervention respresenting a move away from local forms of empowerment and community. At a broader level, the thesis is concerned with households as internally hierarchical units linked together through exchange to make up society and explores the gendered dimension of household economy in a wider world. This, of course, reaches beyond Morocco, and parallels are suggested with English domestic service.

Resumo:
Traditionally, education in Saudi Arabia has tended to lay considerable emphasis on the correct recall of memorised information. In the early years of the 21st century, education policy in Saudi Arabia began to consider the introduction of the concept of critical thinking into the curriculum. At the same time, the role and place of the sciences in the curriculum have increasingly been emphasized, the aim being to equip future generations with the skills thought important in taking the country forward. This study is, therefore, set in Saudi Arabia and focuses on the nature and development of critical thinking in the context of the current curriculum in the sciences. After describing the educational scene in Saudi Arabia, the thesis focuses on what is known about thinking in general and critical thinking in particular. The aim here is to move towards the development of a model of critical thinking and some kind of operational description against which test material can be developed. At that stage, it was recognised that, while critical thinking might be conceptualized as a set of cognitive skills, there is a strong attitudinal element. In simple terms, the learner needs to know how to think critically but also be willing to use these skills. There is a very brief review of some key research in the area of attitudes, including the principles of measurement which underpin the way the perceptions and attitudes of the learners are considered in this study. The cognitive nature of critical thinking is then related to two key research contributions of the 20th century: the work of Jean Piaget and David Ausubel. Critical thinking takes place in the working memory and the insights from information processing are discussed, looking at the ways information moves around the brain and the implications for the development of critical thinking are discussed. This study aims to explore how to measure critical thinking and to determine whether critical thinking skills can be developed in science subjects in school pupils. To achieve this aim, a model of critical thinking was first developed representing that thinking critically basically involves asking the questions how, what and why of new sources of information, the information itself and the linking processes involved in understanding. A test of critical thinking was developed based on this model. The data from this test were related to several other educational measures: student perceptions, working memory capacity, understanding science, school marks in science. Interviews with teachers and school inspectors were also conducted to explore their perceptions. The researcher is confident that the model and test make a contribution to the literature, as well as being of benefit to Saudi Arabia and to other countries. Critical thinking was measured with a total of 240 pupils, 120 girls and 120 boys, aged between 13 and 15, in classes 1, 2 and 3, in six Intermediate Schools in Saudi Arabia in the academic year 2009-2010. The questions in the test were designed so that success in the test relied on one or more of the aspects of critical thinking. The outcomes were related to working memory capacity and school science performance while student perceptions were measured. Principal Components analysis using Varimax rotation showed that the test designed to measure critical thinking was not measuring either science knowledge or understanding nor was it a measure of working memory capacity, but the school marks were highly correlated with working memory capacity. It was found that the measured critical thinking grew from year 1 to year 3; possible reasons are suggested. While the validity of the critical thinking test is not certain, it is not simply a measure of knowledge and understanding or of working memory capacity although any critical thinking would take place in the working memory. The survey offered many insights but, in particular, it revealed that most pupils had a negative attitude to science and showed broadly negative perceptions of science. The following experiment aimed to determine whether critical thinking skills could be developed in science subjects in school pupils. A fresh sample for the second experiment consisted of 1,600 pupils, from 12 schools, 800 girls and 800 boys, 400 of each in grade 1 (aged 13) and 400 in grade 3 (aged 15). Of these 400, 200 were in control groups and 200 in experimental groups. The pupils in the experimental groups were taught critical thinking skills using teaching material specifically developed for this research (which took 9 weeks to complete) and with a method proposed for it, while those in the control groups were taught in the normal way. The following were measured: student perceptions, working memory capacity, critical thinking, and understanding. The first two tests were identical to those used in experiment 1 and the critical thinking test was only slightly modified. In addition, their school marks were taken to make a fifth data set. Analysis of the data showed that critical thinking skills grew significantly after use of the new materials, with year 3 showing greater growth. Despite attempts to make the material gender neutral, boys were found to be better at critical thinking skills, although this may simply reflect gender-separated education. Principal components analysis again showed that critical thinking test data is unrelated to measured working memory capacity, measures of recall, and measures of understanding. The student survey was carried out with the purpose of examining pupils’ attitudes towards various aspects of thinking and critical thinking in the context of science teaching and some unexpected gender differences were observed. In the test of critical thinking skills, girls and boys in the experimental groups both performed better than did the control groups but the girls did not appear to be convinced that this is the case.A total of 98 science teachers and science inspectors were interviewed in order to explore their perceptions of critical thinking in science education. A range of themes was explored and there were some differences in their views which, in turn, did not seem to match the views of the students. Implications are discussed. The overall conclusions are that critical thinking can be measured and that it can be enhanced with school learners aged in the range 13 to 15. However, it is vital that educational policies, resources, national assessment and teacher training be adjusted if the development of critical thinking is to make much progress in Saudi Arabia. The limitations and implications of the study are outlined.

Quantum theory describes our universe incredibly successfully. To our classically-inclined brains, however, it is a bizarre description that requires a reimagining of what fundamental reality, or 'ontology', could look like. This thesis examines different ontological features in light of the success of quantum theory, what it requires, and what it rules out. While these investigations are primarily foundational, they also have relevance to quantum information, quantum communication, and experiments on quantum systems. The way that quantum theory describes the state of a system is one of its most unintuitive features. It is natural, therefore, to ask whether a similarly strange description of states is required on an ontological level. This thesis proves that almost all quantum superposition states for d > 3 dimensions must be real - that is, present in the ontology in a well-defined sense. This is a strong requirement which prevents intuitive explanations of the many quantum phenomena which are based on superpositions. A new theorem is also presented showing that quantum theory is incompatible with macro-realist ontologies, where certain physical quantities must always have definite values. This improves on the Leggett-Garg argument, which also aims to prove incompatibility with macro-realism but contains loopholes. Variations on both of these results that are error-tolerant (and therefore amenable to experimentation) are presented, as well as numerous related theorems showing that the ontology of quantum states must be somewhat similar to the quantum states themselves in various specific ways. Extending these same methods to quantum communication, a simple proof is found showing that an exponential number of classical bits are required to communicate a linear number of qubits. That is, classical systems are exponentially bad at storing quantum data. Causal influences are another part of ontology where quantum theory demands a revision of our classical notions. This follows from the outcomes of Bell experiments, as rigorously shown in recent analyses. Here, the task of constructing a native quantum framework for reasoning about causal influences is tackled. This is done by first analysing the simple example of a common cause, from which a quantum version of Reichenbach's principle is identified. This quantum principle relies on an identification of quantum conditional independence which can be defined in four ways, each naturally generalising a corresponding definition for classical conditional independence. Not only does this allow one to reason about common causes in a quantum experiments, but it can also be generalised to a full framework of quantum causal models (mirroring how classical causal models generalise Reichenbach's principle). This new definition of quantum causal models is illustrated by examples and strengthened by it's foundation on a robust quantum Reichenbach's principle. An unusual, but surprisingly fruitful, setting for considering quantum ontology is found by considering time travel to the past. This provides a testbed for different ontological concepts in quantum theory and new ways to compare classical and quantum frameworks. It is especially useful for comparing computational properties. In particular, time travel introduces non-linearity to quantum theory, which brings (sometimes implicit) ontological assumptions to the fore while introducing strange new abilities. Here, a model for quantum time travel is presented which arguably has fewer objectionable features than previous attempts, while remaining similarly well-motivated. This model is discussed and compared with previous quantum models, as well as with the classical case. Together, these threads of investigation develop a better understanding of how quantum theory affects possible ontologies and how ontological prejudices influence quantum theory.

Shu, Chi-Kou. "Computing exact approximations of a Chaitin omega number". Thesis, University of Auckland, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/2292/38.

Resumo:
A Chaitin Omega number, Ω, is the halting probability of a universal Chaitin (self-delimiting Turing) machine. Every Ω number is both computably enumerable and random. In particular, every Ω number is non-computable. In this thesis, we describe a method to compute the exact values of the first 64 successive bits of a natural Chaitin Omega number. We first describe a model of computation which has been defined and proved to be a universal Chaitin machine U. We then propose a method (procedure) which combines iterative executions of an algorithm with mathematical analysis to get the exact values of the first successive 64 bits of the corresponding Chaitin ΩU number of U. This particular defined Chaitin machine U is essentially a register machine and has been implemented in Java. We call it the canonical compressed model (or compressed model) as it allows only ‘canonical’ program strings to be processed in U. Thus, many input strings which are illegal, hence useless, are ignored and never involved in the computational process. In addition, the compressed design shortens the length of all instructions so that relatively short strings now contain somewhat complex programs. A simulator for U, written in Java, is a primary part of the project. The algorithm is executed iteratively, computing step by step an increasing sequence of rational numbers (in binary) to approximate Ω U. In the n-th step, the algorithm produces four main output files: all halting strings, looping strings, run-time errors, and prefix strings (incomplete programs). In each step, all prefix strings (of the previous step) are read and processed one by one. Each string is extended by 7 bits (ASCII code representations for symbols) to generate new strings that are examined one by one to detect any lexical, syntactic, semantic, or run-time error in each of them. Any of those strings with an error detected is discarded to save storage space and execution time. We solve the Halting Problem for all programs for U of length less than or equal to 84 bits so we can calculate an increasing sequence of exact approximations converging to ΩU. By means of a mathematical analysis the first successive 64 bits, 0000001000000100000110001000011010001111110010111011101000010000 of the 84 bits are proved to be the exact first bits of ΩU. Actually, more bits can be obtained by this procedure if the disk space is sufficient for it to go on, but this procedure cannot be extended indefinitely. There are many formats in which digital information is stored in order to share and re-use it by different applications. The web can hardly be called old and already there is huge research going on to come up with better formats and strategies to share information. Ten years ago formats such as XML, CSV were the primary data interchange formats. And these formats were huge improvements over SGML (Standard Generalized Markup Language). It’s no secret that in last few years there has been a huge transformation in the world of data interchange. More lightweight, bandwidth-non-intensive JSON has taken over traditional formats such as XML and CSV. BigData is the next big thing in computer sciences and JSON has emerged as a key player in BigData database technologies. JSON is the preferred format for web-centric, “NoSQL” databases. These databases are intended to accommodate massive scalability and designed to store data which does not follow any columnar or relational model. Almost all modern programming languages support object oriented concepts, and most of the entity modeling is done in the form of objects. JSON stands for Java Script object notation and as the name suggests this object oriented nature helps modeling entities very naturally. And hence the exchange of data between the application logic and database is seamless. The aim of this report is to develop two similar applications, one with traditional SQL as the backend, and the other with a JSON supporting MongoDB. I am going to build real life functionalities and test the performance of various queries. I will also discuss other aspects of databases such as building a Full Text Index (FTI) and search optimization. Finally I will plot graphs to study the trend in execution time of insertion, deletion, joins and co- relational queries with and without indexes for SQL database, and compare them with the execution trend of MongoDB queries.

The aim of this project is to develop an android application for managing and organizing activities of various departments in ThrockMorton building at K-State. Mobile application development is a growing trend in computer industry. With the advancements in mobile technologies and efficient 3G and 4G wireless communications, a number of desktop applications are now becoming available as mobile applications. Android has the leading market share in the entire smart phone OS available. It gives lot of space for creative development as it is open source. There are various discussion forums and official android development support websites that encourage mobile and tablet application development. The ThrockMobile application provides many features for managing inventory at ThrockMorton in Kansas State University. The features include scanning a barcode of an asset and displaying its details and can even edit any of the fields if needed. The access to this application is restricted to only those devices whose device id is existing in the database. One can request access to the application through an email client integrated with the application. Look up feature lets you look up for a user, room, ip-address and asset. Preferences module lets you enter the details of the server from which data is to be requested. This application has been tested on android devices of varying screen sizes and android OS versions. The application serves requests at an average rate of 1.5sec/request, which is above the industry average time. I mentioned in detail the reason for the above performance average times and as future enhancements I have discussed the possible solutions.

According to the Division of Injury Response, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 1.4 million Americans sustain a traumatic brain injury each year. The aim of the project is to create a web interface to link survivors, family members, and caregivers of individuals suffering from traumatic brain injuries (TBI) to potentially helpful agencies or service centers within their local communities. Often the TBI service centers located in the remote places are difficult to trace hence this website mainly concentrates on small rural centers which are located in Kansas State. The portal will offer two-dimensional and basic information about traumatic brain injury centers and specifically about access of resources. Within the portal, a link to an interactive map will be provided. A form for data entry helps the service centers to publish about their presence and the regions they serve. A search distance feature is also added into the website which interactively searches the nearest latitude, longitude values (TBI service center) to the user’s location by using the haversine formula.

Nowadays, there is a rapid increase in the complexity of large automotive and control systems because of the integration of external software modules in them. Many of these systems are based on sampled-data control theory. And because of the different timing constraints of individual modules, each module has a different sampling rate. Typically, these systems operate with periodic task sequences and the information flows between the tasks. Generally the information propagates from tasks operating at one period to tasks operating at different periods. When this happens, unusually long information propagation delays can occur which can be disastrous because the system cannot respond to the changes until this delay has been elapsed. Although for arbitrary set of task sets the delays can be very long, Howell and Mizuno (2010) considers a set of task sequences with special constraints and some very useful bounds are derived for the worst case occurrences of them. Howell and Mizuno (2011) has laid out algorithms that compute the delays for certain special cases of task sequences considered in Howell and Mizuno (2010). The purpose of this project is to understand and implement the algorithms from Howell and Mizuno (2011). The implementation is done so that it avoids the manual computation of the delays and helps in better understanding the ideas presented in Howell and Mizuno (2011). The application can be tested against any valid input that meets our assumptions, and it constructs a schedule that exhibits the worst case behavior and from the schedule it computes the worst case information propagation delays.

With continuing advancements in the area of electronics, there are more ways in which they are utilized in order to improve the lives of humans. These advancements have to led to the incorporation of electronic components into fabric structures, creating electronic textiles (e-textiles). As it has become possible to place small electrical components within clothing without the performance of the electronics being hampered, research has been conducted in the use of e-textiles in measuring aspects of the human body, such as the heart rate and perspiration rate. In the area of skin temperature, research has been conducted in the past using e-textiles for skin temperature measurement, but past efforts have been unsuccessful in incorporating useable temperature sensors into a fabric substrate. This study compared three types of sensors incorporated into woven and knitted fabrics, using insulated thermocouples, un-insulated thermocouples, and resistance temperature directors (RTDs). Three incorporation methods (weaving, interlacing into knit, and stitching) were used in six fabric samples, with the three sensor types woven and stitched into three woven fabric samples, while the sensors were interlaced into knitted fabric and stitched into the three knitted samples. Fabric hand washing and temperature measurement tests were conducted, and the temperature readings were analyzed statistically for comparison. The analysis conducted showed that the thermocouples that were interlaced or stitched onto the knitted fabric samples were best for temperature measurement due to their accuracy and durability, while the RTDs were unusable as a temperature sensor, as the removal of the electrical connectors during washing eliminated the calibration that was established before washing. This research was supported in part by the Institute for Environmental Research at Kansas State University.

The Course Review System (CRS) application reviews courses and their feedbacks, thereby providing a platform to learn about the courses being offered at Kansas State University (KSU) before enrollment. This can help current and also prospective students who are planning to enroll in courses at KSU to form an idea about the courses being offered at KSU. For the CRS application graduate and undergraduate level courses from 16 departments at KSU were included. Users can rate a course on a scale of 1 to 5 in three categories namely: Difficulty, Grading, and Learning Curve. Statistical analysis was used to display the top 10 courses in each department for each rating category. A recommendation feature which recommends courses to users based on the courses they are currently viewing was added to provide users with recommendations. Users could post their reviews and comments in the comments section. In addition to this we also have a ‘Questions and Answers’ section allowed users to ask questions and any interested user could answer them in that forum. Dimensional Research conducted a survey about the impact of opting courses via online reviews, in which 88% of respondents were influenced by online course reviews when selecting an online course [17]. In addition to the survey however, rational thinking suggests that obtaining an idea about a course involves reading through the experiences of actual users before deciding to select a course. Therefore, the proliferation of various review websites, including software application reviews, plays a major role. Reviews and ratings of a course provides users with an idea about the course they intend to take up and also helps in effectively planning out coursework for the semester. As users are looking for information to help them choose the most suitable course for their requirements course reviews are playing a larger role than they were in the past. It also helps students to make smart choices in laying out a flow chart for their program. The CRS application was a perfect platform for students to know everything they need to know about courses before they enroll.

Education plays a very important role in molding a person into a good individual by imparting knowledge in all aspects. Globalization has helped the students to go to different countries, attain knowledge and exposure on the culture of that country. Universities receive several hundreds of applications from all over the world to get admission for higher studies. By following the conventional method the faculty of the university and also the applicant will face lot of difficulties in communicating. In conventional method the acceptance or rejection would be generally intimated through post. The applicant will be in complete ignorance during the processing of application. They will be several scenarios where interaction between them is necessary to further process the application. This project is intended to overcome such problems and make the interaction between the staff and applicant smoother. The main objective of the project is to develop a website for Computing and Information Sciences department which manages the data regarding the prospective students as well as students currently enrolled. It can be accessed by prospective students (who wish to join the university), faculty and administrators. Applicant will be notified constantly through email and they can always check their application status online. The role of the administrators is to accept applications sent by prospective students and upload their details such as their GRE, TOEFL scores and their academic records into the database. Once these details are stored in the database, the students will be able to access their application status. Students are also given information about missing documents in the database. There will be a committee to decide the application status whether it will be rejected or accepted. Once the applicant is accepted, the applicant would be added to the current students list. All this process is made easy through this website.

Grace Baptist church is a Christian church that is actively reaching out to college students, military families and other groups of people. They aim to impact not only the community of Manhattan and nearby areas but also to reach around the world with the Gospel. It is very important for the church to have a user friendly website so as to introduce Grace Baptist Church to people who may have an interest in Christianity and church activities. Considering the limitations of the current church website, the administrator of Grace Baptist Church decided to have a new website that better represents the church and attract people to know more about the church’s mission. I and another student Nikhita Addanki from computer science department were working together on this project. The main objective of this project is to redesign and implement a website for Grace Baptist Church. The website will be used to post updated information about church events, announcements and opportunities, share videos and blogs, and let people around the world know about Grace Baptist Church and its mission. The new website has a better page appearance, a well organized structure and mobile support. It is implemented using WordPress, a free content management system, so that people from the church can early update the information without knowing much about web techniques. Alone with the implementation, I also reviewed some articles regarding website usability and performance to assure the quality of the new website. A performance test has also been conducted to evaluate the result.

In this paper I present ANCOR Dashboard, a front end web framework that interfaces with ANCOR. ANCOR Dashboard aims to provide ANCORs users with an easy to use front end interface for accomplishing various use-cases against the ANCOR framework. ANCOR Dashboard was developed mainly in AngularJS, a lightweight JavaScript framework. This dashboard is able to accomplish everything that the ANCOR Command Line Interface, or ANCOR-CLI, is able to do. This framework also needed to provide some information about the state of the system through various data gathered from ANCOR in a human readable format. Not only should it be able to inform the user about the state of ANCOR but it needs to be able to perform operations against ANCOR just like the command line interface can do.This report documents the design and implementation of ANCOR Dashboard. It will detail the necessary background of the project, and overview of the framework, and discus- sion of implementation and component breakdown. I will also provide an evaluation of the dashboard and a discussion about future work with ANCOR Dashboard.

In order to demonstrate that developing highly secure systems to the level of rigor required by the higher assurance levels of the common criteria is possible, the NSA asked Praxis High Integrity Systems to undertake a research project to develop a high integrity variant of part of an existing secure system (the Tokeneer System) in accordance with Praxis‟ own high-integrity development process. Their objective is to show the security community that it is possible to develop secure systems rigorously in a cost-effective manner. Hence part of the Tokeneer (ID Station) is redeveloped in Spark programming language and is verified using the Spark proof tools. Bakar Kiasan is a symbolic execution tool for the Spark programming language built in Kansas State University, it can be used for bug finding, test case generation and contract checking. This tool‟s proof process does not include the conventional Spark tools like the Examiner, Simplifier and Proof Checker. It mainly allows the programmer to focus entirely on the source code level. The goal of this MS report is to assess the extent to which symbolic execution techniques in Bakar Kiasan can be applied to the Tokeneer example implemented in Spark.

Stock trading is a complex process which is subject to distinct events both inside and outside an organization. An increase in revenue is a direct influence which causes the stock price to move upwards; likewise, the price of a stock fluctuates due to indirect influences. For example, a stock’s price may move upwards due to a firm arriving at beneficial deals or adding eminent professionals to its board of directors; a rise in correlated stock prices. The stock prices are affected to a great extent by statements of the finance minister and other related officials. In addition, subjective judgments and emotions of traders can also influence the variation of indices and stock prices in the market. The efficient market hypothesis proposes that stock price is unpredictable, assuming all past information has been influenced on current price and therefore it is not useful for the prediction of future price. Nevertheless, there are opposing theories which state that stock prices are predictable through the identification of trends and price patterns based upon past data such as price and volume quotes, balance sheets, and income statements. In the stock market, naive traders (or investors) assume risks due to the above uncertainties, but still have opportunities to make profits through proper, in-depth analysis on sufficient quantities of past data. There are many indicators that are accessible and can help predict the direction of future prices or index values using fundamental and technical data. Fundamental data, derived from the balance sheets and income statements, is preferred for mid-term and long-term investors but not suitable for short-term investors; meanwhile, technical data can be used for short-term investors as well. Technical data is preferred for short-term investments but it can also be used for long-term investments by choosing a specific window of time to look back in determining the indicators for long periods. The current trading model for stocks and indices was developed using an accuracy-based learning classifier system (XCS), which combines reinforcement learning, genetic algorithms, and other heuristics to form an adaptive system whose purpose is to execute stock trades for profit. A test bed developed for experimenting with this system consists of technical data, with candidate features chosen as the most popular indicators.

In decision-making applications, the Skyline query is used to find a set of non-dominated data points (called Skyline points) in a multi-dimensional dataset. A data point dominates another data point if it is at least as good as the other data point in all dimensions and better in at least one dimension. The skyline consists of data points not dominated by any other data point. Computing the skyline points of a dataset is essential for applications that involve multi-criteria decision making. Skyline queries filter out the interesting tuples from a potentially large dataset. No matter how we weigh our preferences along the attributes, only those tuples which score best under a monotone scoring function are part of the skyline. In other words, the skyline does not contain tuples which are nobody's favorite. With a growing number of real-world applications involving multi-criteria decision making over multiple dimensions, skyline queries can be used to answer those problems accurately and efficiently. This report mainly focuses on various skyline computing algorithms which can be used for online processing efficiently and are suitable to present multi-criteria decision making scenario. I implemented the Branch-and-Bound skyline Algorithm on two different data sets; one is a synthetic dataset and the other is a real dataset. My aim is to explore various subspaces of a given dataset and compute skylines over them, especially those subspace skylines which contain the least number of the skyline points.

The objective of this project is to develop an iPhone application for the Konza Prairie LTER and play a significant role in the development of their website. The data of the Konza Prairie LTER is vast and includes the spatial datasets, weather reports, text archives, information about the flora and fauna at Konza Prairie Natural Area, integrated project areas, Dataset Codes, LTER Core Areas, Related projects, Konza Documents and Permits, and Publications. The module which was developed by me provides users information like publications, personnel information and datasets. The titles of the publications along with their PIs will be retrieved from the database and formatted onto the webpage. The 'Personnel' page has links directing to Primary Contacts, Faculty and Staff and Graduate Students. The attractive feature of this personnel page is that each personnel in the list will have a '+' link which enables the user more information about that particular personnel like their field of interests, mailing address and a link to view their profile. As the website already has all the required data and information in detail, the mobile app only briefs about them. People who are working on-site can make of this app efficiently as its features includes list of upcoming events, map of Konza with GPS feature, Post Card feature, Primary personnel to be contacted and other features. The website is developed using Visual Studio 2010 and SQL Server 2008 database. The iPhone app enhanced my knowledge and provided me with real-time exposure to iPhone SDK tools, X-code, Interface builder and its development environment.

While the Hierarchical Dirichlet Process (HDP) has recently been widely applied to topic modeling tasks, most current hybrid models for concurrent inference of topics and other factors are not based on HDP. In this dissertation, we present two new models that extend an HDP topic modeling framework to incorporate other learning factors. One model injects Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) based sentiment learning into HDP. This model preserves the benefits of nonparametric Bayesian models for topic learning, while learning latent sentiment aspects simultaneously. It automatically learns different word distributions for each single sentiment polarity within each topic generated. The other model combines an existing HDP framework for learning topics from free text with latent authorship learning within a generative model using author list information. This model adds one more layer into the current hierarchy of HDPs to represent topic groups shared by authors, and the document topic distribution is represented as a mixture of topic distribution of its authors. This model automatically learns author contribution partitions for documents in addition to topics.

We first present a novel approach to sketching 2D curves with minimally varying curvature as piecewise clothoids. A stable and efficient algorithm fits a sketched piecewise linear curve using a number of clothoid segments with G2 continuity based on a specified error tolerance. We then present a system for conceptually sketching 3D layouts for road and other path networks. Our system makes four key contributions. First, we generate paths with piecewise linear curvature by fitting 2D clothoid curves to strokes sketched on a terrain. Second, the height of paths above the terrain is automatically determined using a new constraint optimization formulation of the occlusion relationships between sketched strokes. Third, we present the break-out lens, a novel widget inspired by break-out views used in engineering visualization, to facilitate the in-context and interactive manipulation of paths from alternate view points. Finally, our path construction is terrain sensitive.

Studying the approximation threshold of NP-hard optimization problems, i.e. the ratio of the objective value achievable by a polynomial time algorithm to that of the optimal solution is an important field in theoretical computer science. In the past two decades there has been significant development both in terms of finding good approximation algorithms, e.g. through the use of semidefinite programming and hardness of approximation, e.g. the development of Probabilistically Checkable Proofs and Unique Games Conjecture. Trying to prove lower bounds for the approximation threshold of an optimization problem, one could take one of two approaches. In the first approach, one proves such lower bounds under a complexity assumption like P =/= NP or Unique Games Conjecture. In the second approach, one studies the behaviour of prominent algorithmic schemes, such as Linear Programming (LP) and Semidefinite Programming (SDP) relaxations for the problem of interest. There, the measure of efficiency is the integrality gap which sets the approximation limitation of the algorithms based on these relaxations. In this work we study the integrality gap of families of strong LP and SDP relaxations for a number of combinatorial optimization problems. The relaxations come from the context of Lift-and-Project systems. There one starts from a standard (weak) relaxation from a problem and iteratively adds more constraints to make the relaxation stronger, i.e. closer to an exact formulation of the problem. We mostly study the performance of the Sherali-Adams SDP relaxations. Specifically, the main contributions of this thesis are as follows. • We show optimal integrality gaps for the level-\Theta(n) Sherali-Adams SDP relaxation of MAX k-CSP_q(P) for any predicate P:[q]^k -> {0,1} satisfying a technical condition, which we call being promising. Our result show that for such predicates MAX k-CSP_q (P) cannot be approximated (beyond a trivial approximation) by the Sherali-Adams SDP relaxations of even very high level. Austrin and Håstad (SIAM J. Comput., 2011) show that a random predicate is almost surely promising. • We complement the above result by showing that for some class of predicates which are not promising MAX k-CSP_q(P) can be approximated (beyond the trivial approximation) by its canonical SDP relaxation. • We show optimal integrality gap lower bounds for level-poly(n) Sherali-Adams SDP relaxations of Quadratic Programming. We also present superconstant integrality gap lower bounds for superconstant levels of the same hierarchy for MaxCutGain. • We show optimal integrality gap lower bounds for the level-5 Sherali-Adams SDP relaxation of Vertex Cover. We also conjecture a positivity condition on the Taylor expansion of a certain function which, if proved, shows optimal integrality gaps for any constant level of the Sherali-Adams SDP hierarchy for Vertex Cover. • We revisit the connection between integrality gap lower bounds and the Frankl-Rödl theorem (Trans. of the AMS, 1987). We prove a new density version of that theorem which can be interpreted as a new isoperimetric inequality of the Hamming cube. Using this inequality we prove integrality gap lower bounds for the Lovász-Schrijver SDP (resp. Sherali-Adams LP) relaxation of Vertex Cover (resp. Independent Set) in degree bounded graphs.

Resumo:
One desirable property of machine learning algorithms is the ability to balance the number of parameters in a model in accordance with the amount of available data. Incorporating nonparametric Bayesian priors into models is one approach of automatically adjusting model capacity to the amount of available data: with small datasets, models are less complex (require storing fewer parameters in memory), whereas with larger datasets, models are implicitly more complex (require storing more parameters in memory). Thus, nonparametric Bayesian priors satisfy frequentist intuitions about model complexity within a fully Bayesian framework. This thesis presents several novel machine learning models and applications that use nonparametric Bayesian priors. We introduce two novel models that use flat, Dirichlet process priors. The first is an infinite mixture of experts model, which builds a fully generative, joint density model of the input and output space. The second is a Bayesian biclustering model, which simultaneously organizes a data matrix into block-constant biclusters. The model capable of efficiently processing very large, sparse matrices, enabling cluster analysis on incomplete data matrices. We introduce binary matrix factorization, a novel matrix factorization model that, in contrast to classic factorization methods, such as singular value decomposition, decomposes a matrix using latent binary matrices. We describe two nonparametric Bayesian priors over tree structures. The first is an infinitely exchangeable generalization of the nested Chinese restaurant process that generates data-vectors at a single node in the tree. The second is a novel, finitely exchangeable prior generates trees by first partitioning data indices into groups and then by randomly assigning groups to a tree. We present two applications of the tree priors: the first automatically learns probabilistic stick-figure models of motion-capture data that recover plausible structure and are robust to missing marker data. The second learns hierarchical allocation models based on the latent Dirichlet allocation topic model for document corpora, where nodes in a topic-tree are latent ``super-topics", and nodes in a document-tree are latent categories. The thesis concludes with a summary of contributions, a discussion of the models and their limitations, and a brief outline of potential future research directions.
