Streszczenie:
Abstract One of the most important tasks in China’s supply-side structural reform is to effectively clean up zombie firms. Using industrial firm-level data in China from 1998 to 2007, we identified zombie firms in Chinese industrial sectors. Based on the identified zombie firms, we measured the survival duration of zombie firms and empirically studied the effect of fiscal subsidies on the survival duration of zombie firms by using survival analysis. Results revealed that fiscal subsidies significantly lengthened the survival duration of zombie firms. Specifically, fiscal subsidies not only reduced the possibility of zombie firms exiting the market, but more importantly, they reduced the possibility of zombie firms’ resurrection. Thus, fiscal subsidies do not contribute to the “death” or “resurrection” of zombie firms. These results are robust despite changing the identification method and the survival analysis method, and considering the endogeneity of fiscal subsidies. Our findings show that we should adhere to market-oriented mechanism in disposing zombie firms and cut off the channels that government transfuses to zombie firms by fiscal subsidies.

Streszczenie:
Though frequently comprehended as a vehicle for social satire or post-cultural speculation, zombie fictions also demonstrably mobilize the climatic unease of the current Anthropocene. Focusing in particular upon Max Brooks’s 2006 novel World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War, this article considers the complex politics which have frequently underwritten a mythical origin for pandemics in the Othered East, and their contemporary reproduction in western concerns regarding unregulated surgery and the capitalism of human tissue. The article then proposes that the deterioration of human culture consequent upon the fictional zombie pandemic interrogates the contemporary understanding of integrated nationhood and problematizes the dichotomy structured between geographically stable and refugee populations. The sudden eclipse of the competitive Anthropocene by a mindless Zombicene brings not renewal for a planet no longer supporting agriculture and industry but rather a hastening of perceived environmental collapse, where unregulated hunting and the uncontrolled burning of natural resources accelerate climatic deterioration, imperilling further the survival of residual humanity. As a type of apocalyptic fiction, the zombie narrative thus poses questions with regard to the persistence of conventional human behaviours, even in a post-capitalist environment, where the political concepts structuring nationhood have come to function as little more than a memory.

Streszczenie:
Abstract Among everything else post-apocalyptic video games have come to stand for, notions of in-group versus out-group communication are paramount. The Last of Us (2014, Naughty Dog/Sony Computer Entertainment) is a case in point. I look into the game’s use of subtitles and didactic texts in order to find out to the extent speech acts shape the player’s understanding of what the video game is. As an understudied aspect of video games, HUD or menu elements, as well as characters’ exchanges and voice-over narration, disclose what it is like to be alive, dead or in-between. Essentially, they show the tensions between the avatar and the gamer: the hero makes all of the decisions by himself and the player has to abide or stop playing all together. The avatar’s identity comes alive through speech acts, while the player is left outside decision-making processes. Survival horror gaming, with a religious twist, gives insight into the in-game discussion on the representation of the zombie rather than on the zombie experience as such. On screen, the interplay between speech acts and written language amounts to a procedural language, which suggests that variability in language creates an environment conducive to learning. Particularly, language use is all about group values and communication styles that should help gamers tell apart friends from enemies, good from evil and, finally, people from zombies.

This report describes mutants of the zebrafish having phenotypes causing a general arrest in early morphogenesis. These mutants identify a group of loci making up about 20% of the loci identified by mutants with visible morphological phenotypes within the first day of development. There are 12 Class I mutants, which fall into 5 complementation groups and have cells that lyse before morphological defects are observed. Mutants at three loci, speed bump, ogre and zombie, display abnormal nuclei. The 8 Class II mutants, which fall into 6 complementation groups, arrest development before cell lysis is observed. These mutants seemingly stop development in the late segmentation stages, and maintain a body shape similar to a 20 hour embryo. Mutations in speed bump, ogre, zombie, specter, poltergeist and troll were tested for cell lethality by transplanting mutant cells into wild-type hosts. With poltergeist, transplanted mutant cells all survive. The remainder of the mutants tested were autonomously but conditionally lethal: mutant cells, most of which lyse, sometimes survive to become notochord, muscles, or, in rare cases, large neurons, all cell types which become postmitotic in the gastrula. Some of the genes of the early arrest group may be necessary for progression though the cell cycle; if so, the survival of early differentiating cells may be based on having their terminal mitosis before the zygotic requirement for these genes.

The experiment was carried out during May, 2023 to April, 2024 to study the effect of seed germination and seedling growth of different Adenium hybrids in naturally ventilated polyhouse in the Department of Horticulture, SHUATS, Prayagraj. The different hybrids used in the experiment were White Zombie, Green Arabicum, Hulk, Super Dork Dork, RCN, KHZ, PBN, Godji x Red Bangle, Godji F2 and Gc x GT in completely randomized design and each hybrid was replicated thrice. The experimental results revealed that hybrid PBN reported significantly better performance in parameters like germination percentage (100%), days to 50% germination (4.4), seedling vigour index (1813.33), germination speed index (1.15), survival percentage (100%), seedling height (11.07cm), number of leaves per seedlings (16.67), leaf area (15cm2) and caudex diameter (3.93cm) which was found to be at par with hybrid RCN. Hence, hybrids PBN and RCN could be recommended for Prayagraj agro-climatic conditions.

Streszczenie:
AbstractHost behavioural manipulation is a common strategy used by parasites to enhance their survival and/or transmission. Baculoviruses induce hyperactivity and tree-top disease (pre-death climbing behaviour) in their caterpillar hosts. However, little is known about the underlying mechanisms of this behavioural manipulation. A previous study showed that the baculovirus Spodoptera exigua multiple nucleopolyhedrovirus (SeMNPV) induced tree-top disease at 3 days post infection in third instar S. exigua larvae and that light plays a key role in triggering this behaviour. Here we investigated the temporal requirements for the presence of light to trigger this behaviour and found that light from above was needed between 43 and 50 h post infection to induce tree-top disease. Infected larvae that were not exposed to light from above in this period finally died at low positions. Exposure to light prior to this period did not affect the final positions where larvae died. Overall we conclude that light in a particular time frame is needed to trigger SeMNPV-induced tree-top disease in S. exigua larvae.

Streszczenie:
Cops and Robbers on Graphs (C & R) is a vertex-to-vertex pursuit game played on graphs first introduced by Quilliot (in 1978) and Nowakowski (in 1983). The cop player starts the game by choosing a set of vertices which will be the cops’ starting positions. The robber player responds by choosing its own start vertex. On each player’s turn, the player may move its tokens to adjacent vertices. The cops win if the robber is captured (they occupy the same vertex). The robber wins if it can avoid capture indefinitely. The question, then, is to determine the smallest number of cops required to guarantee the robber will be captured. A variation of C & R called Zombies and Survivors (Z & S) was recently proposed and studied by Fitzpatrick. Z & S is the same as C & R with the added twist that the zombies are required to move closer to the survivor (by following a shortest path from the zombie to the survivor). Whenever multiple shortest paths exist, the zombies are free to choose which one to follow. As in C & R, we are interested in the minimum number of zombies required to guarantee the survivor will be caught. Chapter 1 summarizes important results in vertex-pursuit games. In Chapter 2 we give an example of a planar graph where 3 zombies always lose, whereas Aigner and Fromme showed in 1984 that three cops have a winning strategy on planar graphs. In Chapter 3 we show how two zombies can win on a cycle with one chord.

Streszczenie:
The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) pandemic still remains a major public health concern worldwide. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that approximately over 70% of people living with HIV in the world are in sub-Saharan region. Malawi is one of the worst affected countries in sub-Saharan Africa with prevalence reaching up to 16% in some areas. Recent study reports, largely in Africa, comparing outcomes for HIV patients with Kaposi’s sarcoma (HIV/KS) and HIV patients without KS indicate poor prognosis and poor health outcomes amongst HIV patients with KS. While efforts are being made to improve the management and care for the HIV/KS patient group, there is also need for continued efforts to better understand the survival patterns in this patients. The work presented in this thesis attempts to investigate the survival patterns in different patient subgroups in HIV cohorts in Malawi by using advanced and novel statistical techniques with an ultimate aim of informing targeted patient treatment and management practices. In this thesis, we aim to address the following four objectives; (1) to identify risk factors for mortality among HIV patients diagnosed with Kaposi’s sarcoma during routine initiation of ART, (2) to model the survival pattern among HIV patients diagnosed with KS, (3) to model local geographical variations in survival among HIV patients on ART, (4) to quantify transition dynamics in HIV and TB co-infection using multi-state modelling. For the first two objectives, we considered extended Cox models and parametric models. We also used a novel approach of accounting for high attrition in cohorts in which we used a ’gold-standard’ data to compare survival in our cohort. Sensitivity analyses indicated consistencies in our approach providing an insight into how model results change when using this comparison approach. Overall We noted an early mortality with most patients dying in the first five months after starting HIV treatment. Patients with TB and the patients who started in the early era of ART were significantly at risk of dying. The model diagnostics indicated that (i) a random effects Cox/Log-Gaussian frailty model and (ii) a flexible parametric proportional hazards model, describe the risk of mortality in the HIV/KS patients well. For the third objective, spatial survival models were considered. The study showed existence of possible residual spatial variation in survival after adjusting for age, sex, KS status, TB status and unobserved individual frailties. To further aid our understanding, we used the choropleth maps to indicate areas with substantially high probability of mortality risk at different cut-off values. These results highlight the local geographical variations in survival in HIV populations, an element more often ignored in most studies on HIV data. For the last objective, we considered the homogeneous continuous time multistate Markov models. In this study we found that patients in TB free status had a relatively higher probability of transitioning to being diagnosed with TB compared to dying while in TB free status. However, the cumulative transition hazards for the ’TB free ! death’ transitions compared to the "TB free ! TB infection" transitions were only higher during the early days of HIV treatment. This result emphasize how early periods after starting HIV treatment is crucial to ensure better prognosis. We also noted significant gender differences in the ’TB-free ! death’ transitions. It is anticipated that the findings in this thesis will help to inform treatment and management practices of HIV patients. The findings provide clear outcome pathways taken by HIV/TB patients before experiencing a terminal outcome. More importantly, the findings could help inform policies aimed at improving overall survival in HIV cohorts by establishing targeted patient management and treatment strategies and also formulating a more efficient triage system for care and treatment of particular group of patients.

Streszczenie:
I returned to school to receive an MFA in Musical Theater for many reasons, but paramount was the need to further explore and develop my range as an actress. Throughout my career, I have played a variety of roles, but none as challenging or possibly as rewarding as the man-hungry secretary "Charlie" in James Valcq's Zombies from the Beyond, produced by the Jester Theatre in Winter Garden, FL. Performing this role allowed me to achieve one of my objectives when entering the grad program at UCF: to transition from a classical ingenue or soubrette into a leading lady or character actress; making Zombies from the Beyond the perfect capstone to my graduate experience. During the 1950s, American cinema was filled with sci-fi movies such as Forbidden Planet, The Thing from Another World, and Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Each movie depicted an otherworldly creature as the villain (a metaphor for the relationship between the United States and the USSR) who had only one purpose: total domination. Zombies from the Beyond aptly reveals the absurdity of the hysteria and paranoia surrounding the "cold war" and the "space race" that dominated America in the 1950s. The play makes comic use of the "double-red agent" and presents the belief that the space race and cold war inevitably were tied together, while examining Russia's dirty tactics in the struggle for power. In addition to the historical ramifications of Zombies from the Beyond, post WWII America saw an explosive growth in female empowerment. Through each female character''s thoughts and actions on stage, Valcq's musical tackles the struggle many women faced between the new feminist ideals and old-fashioned morals. My character, Charlene "Charlie" Osmanski, is the iconic man-hungry, working girl with a big heart (aka "The Sidekick"). She is a woman very much caught between the traditional values of the 1950s and the progressive, more feminist attitudes starting to take hold in the country. After accepting the role in Zombies from the Beyond, I realized my responsibility was to breathe new life into the role of the comedic sidekick while remaining true to the original vision and traditions that had been set forth by such brave comic pioneers as Rose-Marie, Thelma Ritter, and Vivian Vance. Faced with this daunting task and the enormity of creating a role with such a prominent historical and societal lineage, I asked myself, "What does an actor need to know in order to become the perfect sidekick?" To answer this compelling question and to ensure I did not fail in my task, I researched actresses who play a similar archetype; studied the evolution of the female comedienne; examined the audience's relationship to the sidekick; and discussed the character's future as an integral force in contemporary theatre, all in a convenient survival guide. Ultimately, the evolution of the mainstream audience and their shifting requirements for entertainment impact the sidekick's portrayal on stage; however, since post-modernistic audiences no longer need one definitive stereotype or archetypal character, the ideas I set forth are not finite or absolute in nature. Instead, they create a basic foundation that serves as a guide for the actor when creating a similar character while ensuring the sidekick's place as a relevant and sustainable character for generations to come.

In nowadays, we can see “Zombies” appear in almost every mass pop culture media, such as video games, music, TV series… etc, among these, “Movie” has biggest quantity which is talking about zombie. From 1932, the first zombie movie, White Zombie come on stage, till 1968, Night of Living Dead which was the first and classic work of George A. Romero, who known as the father of modern zombies. And now, zombie movies has already become one of the important type in commercial movie market. Hundreds of zombie movies shows lots of different worldview and image of zombies. For a long time, zombie movies is a big family that very complicated and confused, cause no one ever gave “Zombie” a standard definition, so every director and film maker could use their imagination into this type of movie and with almost-no-limited. Take commercial zombie movie in recent year as example, we could say Post- Apocalyptic Type is the main stream. Since 28 Days Later advocated first, lots of great works of commercial zombie movie were all about Post-Apocalyptic World. But beyond these “seriously atmosphere” zombie movies, some has created their own and very different way, characters in these movies has very different attitude toward the end of the world from general zombie movies, it even could fall in love with a zombie. And these movies, which are the object of this research, “Postmodern Zombie Movies” which could found Postmodern style inside it. This research take Shaun of the Dead, Zombieland and Warm Bodies as example, they show very different style with general ones, they even makes fun of them, and stand their own rules in zombie world, this research try to use Postmodern theory to explain this kind of phenomenon and changes. And the reason makes Postmodern Zombie Movie worth to research is that although they were subgenre in zombie movies, but they still get success in commercial market and win lots of attention in all of the zombie movies. And maybe we still couldn’t say that this kind of movie are one of the factions in zombie movies, but its development definitely need to pay attention.

Sakawa boys are young internet scammers in Ghana who believe “juju” or magic helps to manipulate their victims into giving them large sums of money. Sakawa boys are recruited primarily from the urban poor and their principal targets are Westerners via the internet. Economic insecurity and entrenched poverty resulting from government corruption, as well as neocolonial global development initiatives, all contribute to a setting where occult economies thrive. The promise of great wealth to be gained through occult sits alongside fear that “juju” turns its users into zombies and can ultimately lead to death. This paper explores the structure and logic of poverty that makes becoming a Sakawa boy a viable survival strategy despite the risks involved.

Streszczenie:
Building on the previous analysis of popular, long-surviving characters, the chapter focuses on The Walking Dead’s participation in a larger discourse of survivalism driven by the cultural phenomenon of the zombie apocalypse. Through a variety of paratexts and textual depictions, the franchise casts survival struggles and preparedness as entertaining, interactive pastimes. However, the chapter suggests that these practices prepare viewers less for survival within a zombie apocalypse, or any kind of disaster as a matter of fact, but for survival and competition within a neoliberal, capitalist marketplace. The chapter elaborates on this understanding in regard to three specific themes, genre knowledge-related ‘zombie literacy,’ ‘zombie consumerism,’ and ‘zombie workout.’ Moreover, aside from such dominant participations, the chapter searches for alternatives to such neoliberal, capitalist competition within the show and its paratexts. The notion of survival failure here can be reframed as disruptive refusal of capitalist survivalism.

Streszczenie:
This essay begins fittingly with the line “If there’s one thing you can depend upon during the zombie apocalypse, it’s that you won’t have to face it alone.” In this essay, Levey and Harper examine the importance of group dynamics in contemporary teen novels that concentrate on surviving zombie invasions. Focusing on two recently published horror novels popular among teens, Charlie Higson’s The Enemy and Michael Grant’s Gone, Levey and Harper examine the “considerations of group consciousness and democratic dynamics” in the texts, noting that such attention to the group is a departure from previous teen novels that had focused more on negotiations of individual identity (this also marks a difference from the novels McCort examines, suggesting the different approach toward identity taken by those writing for older adolescents). For Levey and Harper, the importance of these particular novels and their treatment of the individual in relation to the group is twofold: they ask the characters therein to work through personal issues that are detrimental to the survival of the group and they call for social re-evaluation. In the worlds of The Enemy and Gone, young adult readers experience a close encounter with monstrous humanity, one that allows them to vicariously experience how others deal with threats external to their circles, as well as the threats that lie within themselves and their own peer groups.

Streszczenie:
Abstract The most discussed examples of conscious states involve the qualities of sensory experience: colours, sounds, smells, and tastes. But human consciousness is also permeated with meaning and understanding. As you look at this page, for example, you don’t experience meaningless squiggles but meaningful words. We can call this aspect of consciousness ‘experiential understanding.’ This chapter explores two philosophical challenges that arise when we try to explain experiential understanding: the meaning zombie problem and the mystery of psycho-physical harmony. A meaning zombie is a hypothetic creature: a physical duplicate of a human being that has consciousness but lacks experiential understanding. Meaning zombies pose a challenge to evolutionary accounts of the emergence of experiential understanding. Given that meaning zombies would survive just as well as us despite lacking experiential understanding, why did experiential understanding evolve? Why aren’t we meaning zombies? The challenge is further deepened by the mystery of psycho-physical harmony, the puzzle of explaining why consciousness and behaviour tend to be correlated in a rationally appropriate manner (something which any evolutionary explanation of consciousness presupposes and so cannot explain). To solve these problems, the author defends pan-agentialism, the view that fundamental physical entities are conscious and disposed to respond rationally to the character of their experience. Finally, it is argued that the pan-agentialist world is one that embodies purpose at the fundamental level of reality. The ‘Digging Deeper’ section gives a Bayesian version of the argument for pan-agentialism, and responds to a few objections, including the charge that libertarian free will is not coherent.
