Streszczenie:
Transversely loaded bidimensional-magneto-optical-traps (2D-MOTs) have been recently developed as high flux sources for cold strontium atoms to realize a new generation of compact experimental setups. Here, we discuss on the implementation of a cross-polarized bi-color slower for a strontium atomic beam, improving the 2D-MOT loading and increasing the number of atoms up to [Formula: see text] atoms in the 461 nm MOT. Our slowing scheme addresses simultaneously two excited Zeeman substates of the 88Sr 1[Formula: see text]P1 transition at 461 nm. We also realized a three-axis active feedback control of the magnetic field down to the microgauss regime. Such a compensation is performed thanks to a network of eight magnetic field probes arranged in a cuboid configuration around the atomic cold sample and a pair of coils in a quasi-Helmholtz configuration along each of three Cartesian directions. Our active feedback is capable of efficiently suppressing most of the magnetically induced position fluctuations of the 689 nm intercombination-line MOT.

Streszczenie:
This article discusses self-organization in cold atoms via light-mediated interactions induced by feedback from a single retro-reflecting mirror. Diffractive dephasing between the pump beam and the spontaneous sidebands selects the lattice period. Spontaneous breaking of the rotational and translational symmetry occur in the 2D plane transverse to the pump. We elucidate how diffractive ripples couple sites on the self-induced atomic lattice. The nonlinear phase shift of the atomic cloud imprinted onto the optical beam is the parameter determining coupling strength. The interaction can be tailored to operate either on external degrees of freedom leading to atomic crystallization for thermal atoms and supersolids for a quantum degenerate gas, or on internal degrees of freedom like populations of the excited state or Zeeman sublevels. Using the light polarization degrees of freedom on the Poincaré sphere (helicity and polarization direction), specific irreducible tensor components of the atomic Zeeman states can be coupled leading to spontaneous magnetic ordering of states of dipolar and quadrupolar nature. The requirements for critical interaction strength are compared for the different situations. Connections and extensions to longitudinally pumped cavities, counterpropagating beam schemes and the CARL instability are discussed.

Streszczenie:
A reduced density matrix approach is employed to provide a general theoretical description of polarized radiative emission during single-photon transitions from bound and auto-ionizing states of many-electron atomic systems in the presence of a general arrangement of static (or quasi-static) electric and magnetic fields. Polarized radiative emission from partially ionized atomic systems can occur as a result of the excitation of the radiating atomic states by electrons or ions with an anisotropic velocity distribution, which can be produced in an electron or ion beam experiment, and in a non-equilibrium plasma environment. Polarized radiative emission can also be produced or modified during the excitation of the atomic system in the presence of electric and magnetic fields, and electromagnetic fields. In electric and magnetic fields, the normally overlapping angular momentum projection components of atomic spectral lines can be substantially shifted from their field-free positions and split into spectroscopically resolvable (and inherently polarized) features. Because of the breakdown of the field-free angular momentum and parity selection rules, otherwise forbidden components of atomic spectral lines can be generated. Using a representation based on the field-free many-electron atomic states, the Stark–Zeeman patterns can be determined by a diagonalization of the atomic Hamiltonian in the presence of electric and magnetic fields. In the density operator approach, account can be taken of the coherent excitation of a particular subspace of the initial atomic bound or auto-ionizing states. A general expression for the matrix elements of the detected-photon density operator is obtained and provides a unified framework for the analysis of the spectral intensity, angular distribution, and polarization of the Stark–Zeeman patterns. From a unified development of time-domain (equation-of-motion) and frequency-domain (resolvent-operator) formulations of the more comprehensive reduced density matrix approach, the non-equilibrium atomic state kinetics and the homogeneous spectral line shapes can be systematically and self-consistently described.

AbstractA two-stage probe atomizer for direct analysis of samples that strongly smoke when evaporating (oil, food suspensions, etc.) by Zeeman atomic absorption spectrometry with high-frequency modulation of the polarization of the transmission radiation has been proposed. The effective ventilation of the atomizer and independent heating of the tungsten probe in a strong magnetic field of the atomizer have been provided for sensitive detection of atomic absorption pulses without overlapping of the transmission beam by the probe. The performance of the atomizer has been illustrated on the MGA-915MD spectrometer by the behavior of the signals of the Ag and Al test elements depending on the heating modes, probe position, and diameter of the dosing hole of a graphite furnace. The range of concentrations to be determined has been extended by a factor of 50, while maintaining an error at a level that is acceptable for quantitative analysis.

Streszczenie:
During the powerful picosecond optical pumping, intense stimulated picosecond emission arises in a thin GaAs layer. It was found that, firstly, the maximum emission intensity decreases with increasing diameter of the pump beam (the pump energy density is fixed). Secondly, this dependence is anticorrelated with the dependence on the diameter of the characteristic relaxation time of the emission. And this time, in turn, is associated with the characteristic cooling time of charge carriers, which is slowed down due to heating of the carriers by emission. As a result, the autocorrelation indicated in the title is revealed.

Streszczenie:
Large (megagauss) “spontaneous” magnetic fields are produced by laser–plasma interactions when a short, powerful laser pulse is focused to a small diameter onto a solid target. The relevance of these magnetic fields to inertial confinement fusion applications depends on the numerous ways in which they can affect laser–plasma interactions and the resulting plasma. Theoretical studies have dealt with a variety (thermal, radiative, and dynamo) of generation mechanisms and with the associated transport and instability phenomena. The fields, originally observed with small induction probes placed near the target, have been studied in the focal region by optical methods. These optical diagnostics have used Faraday rotation of a probing laser beam and Zeeman profiles of emitted spectral lines.

Streszczenie:
An algorithm is proposed for the approximate solution of a purely nonlinear problem of the parameters of optically detected magnetic resonance in the ground state of alkali atoms in an optically dense medium under conditions of intense narrow-band optical pumping, which causes, first, bleaching of the atomic medium, and, second, partial suppression of spin-exchange broadening. The direct solution of the Liouville equation under these conditions is complicated by the fact that the relaxation time of each of the levels of the hyperfine and Zeeman structure of the ground state is determined by the populations of the remaining levels, which leads to the necessity of solving a self-consistent problem in a multilevel system, and, as a rule, requires the use of supercomputers. In this paper, approximations are proposed that make it possible to significantly simplify and speed up the calculation by orders of magnitude, and the results are compared with experimental data using the example of a two-beam Mx scheme of a magnetometric sensor

Streszczenie:
AbstractThe effect of temporal pulse-shape on the characterization of the longitudinal electric field resulting from the tight-focusing of an ultrashort few-cycle TM01 laser beam in free space is investigated analytically and numerically. The longitudinal field is found to be sensitive to the pulse-shape of the driving field. The temporal pulse-shapes considered are Gaussian, Lorentzian, and hyperbolic secant having identical full width at half maximum of intensity. Analytical calculations are made beyond the paraxial and slowly varying envelope approximations. From the numerical results we find that due to finite duration of the signal, the evolution of the pulse envelope before the waist is faster (negative time-delay) but slowed down (positive time-delay) after the waist. This time-delay, for single-cycle pulses of wavelength λ0, and for spot-size w0f in the range 0.6λ0 > w0f > 0.25λ0, is pulse-shape dependent. The time delay is maximum for the Gaussian pulse and minimum for the Lorentzian pulse. The carrier frequency shift depends on the temporal profile of the pulse, beam spot size, axial propagating distance and also on the number of cycles in a pulse. In addition, a comparative study of the variation of the corrected axial Gouy- phase of the longitudinal electric field of single-cycle pulse (spot size w0f = 0.5λ0) with normalized retarded time shows that the phase variation is maximum for Gaussian and minimum for the Lorentzian pulse shape.

Streszczenie:
The research of optically pumped cesium beam atomic clock (OPCB) at Peking University has lasted for decades. At present, the short-term frequency stability is 3×10−12/τ and the long-term (5-day) frequency stability can reach 7 × 10−15. The optimization methods of the short-term frequency stability are using laser induced beam spectrum to stabilize the laser frequency, using cyclic transition to detect the atomic state and using a cesium oven with a collimator to generate the cesium atomic beam. The methods of obtaining the good long-term frequency stability are controlling the microwave power based on the atomic transition probability, controlling the C-field intensity based on Zeeman frequency and controlling the laser power using fluorescence. The compact optically pumped cesium beam atomic clock of Peking University is expected to contribute to the field of timing, positioning, navigation and high speed digital communication.

ABSTRACTDegradation due to electron beam irradiation is a significant problem for ZnS based phosphors, particularly for flat panel displays. In this study, ZnS:Ag phosphor particles were coated by nanoparticles of ZnO:Al by pulsed laser deposition (PLD), to suppress the cathodoluminescence (CL) degradation process under electron bombardment at 15 k V. The pressure of the vacuum chamber and the deposition time were changed to control the morphology of the coating, i.e. thickness, continuity, and uniformity. CL degradation of the phosphors was slowed down for all cases by the nanocoating. The relationship between the CL degradation and the morphology of the coating material was examined by an SEM combined with a simultaneous CL measurement device. Degradation mechanisms were elucidated in terms of the morphology of the coating material and the change in the surface atomic species during irradiation of the electron beam.

AbstractThe resistive response of atomic layer deposited thin epitaxial α-Cr2O3(0 0 1) films, to H2 and CO in air, was studied. The films were covered with Pt nanoislands formed by electron-beam evaporation of a sub-monolayer amount of the material. The gas measurements were performed at 250°C and 450°C. These temperatures led to different proportion of chemical states, Pt2+ and Pt4+, to which the Pt oxidized. The modification was ascertained by the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy method. As a result of the modification, the response was fast at 250°C, but slowed at 450°C. A disadvantageous abundance of Pt4+ arising at 450°C in air could be diminished by high-vacuum annealing thus restoring the response properties of the system at 250°C.

Abstract Resorcinol/formaldehyde (RF) foam resin is an attractive material as a low-density target in high-power laser–plasma experiments because of its fine network structure, transparency in the visible region, and low-Z element (hydrogen, carbon, and oxygen) composition. In this study, we developed disk-shaped RF foam and deuterated RF foam targets with 40–200 μm thickness and approximately 100 mg/cm3 density having a network structure from 100 nm to a few micrometers cell size. By deuteration, the polymerization rate was drastically slowed down owing to kinetic isotope effects. These targets were used in high-power laser experiments where a megaelectronvolt proton beam was successfully generated.
