Background and Objectives: Gun violence is the leading cause of death for youth. This study examined an academic-community partnership to address gun violence through a strength-based approach called Asset-Based Community Development. Methods: We used a case study design. Participants were Black youth who encounter frequent gun violence (average age = 16.7 years; 72% male). Our partnership involved survey development/completion and semistructured discussions. We also interviewed community stakeholders to collect data on local assets. We interpreted data through a communitywide forum to guide social action to address gun violence. Results: The majority of youth (76%) witnessed neighborhood violence in the last year. The top youth concerns related to gun violence included poverty, guns, and gangs. Community stakeholders saw local people and local organizations as primary community assets. A community forum to interpret these data led to social action in the form of an environmental strategy—cleaning up an unused commercial building for the development of a youth tech center. The majority of youth participants (89.5%) agreed or strongly agreed that they had a voice in the research process. Conclusion: Participatory research that takes an asset-based approach can enable relevant inquiry that engages youth and guides social action to address gun violence.

Recently, universities have paid attention to partnership with local communities for mutual benefits. However, this partnership is a complex and challenging process because it brings two different organizations to work together. Many challenges encountered often produces dissatisfying results and distrust among all participants. Using the BRAVE youth violence prevention program as a case study, this study describes the essential facilitators affecting the university partnership with disadvantaged poor ethnic communities in Chicago. Identified facilitators are: agreed mutual benefits, trust relationship, open and transparent communication, shared missions and interest, equal power in decision-making, empowering organization’s sustainability, flexibility, and cultural activities. Building on the lessons from this case example, this study presents that the university-community partnership demonstrates a shared responsibility of the university to serve community members and of the partner agency’s commitment to strengthen the community’s capacity to prevent youth violence.

The Educating Kids Against Gun Violence (EKG) program was developed in response to high levels of gun violence in an urban inner-city county through a partnership between the county prosecutor's office, local law enforcement, and a Level 1 trauma center. This program incorporates short video clips and interactive presentations, which address legal and medical consequences of gun violence. The program was presented to youths varying in age and degree of prior contact with the criminal justice system. Pre and post surveys were used to evaluate the short-term impact of the EKG program on the legal and medical knowledge and attitudes of youth participants. There were 130 pre and post surveys that could be exactly matched. Sixty-three per cent of participants had been arrested and 35 per cent had been convicted of a crime. On the post survey, 79 per cent stated that “the program will help keep me out of trouble” and 69 per cent stated that “in the future because of this program I will be less likely to carry a gun”. The EKG program seemed to have positive short-term impacts on youth knowledge of legal and medical consequences and attitudes regarding gun violence.

Background: Urban violence is a significant issue in Brazil, particularly affecting young people in public schools. Mindfulness and Social Emotional Learning (SEL) interventions have shown efficacy in promoting mental health and reducing violence. Method: This article describes the development of a partnership between the Program of Mindfulness and Social Emotional Learning (SENTE) and Instituto Cidade Segura (ICS), an NGO focused on a systemic approach to violence reduction. Results: SENTE evolved over 15 years, initiated by Instituto da Familia (INFAPA), with a focus on underserved populations. This collaboration aimed to create a more comprehensive violence reduction intervention. The Mindfulness and Social–Emotional Learning Program (M-SEL) sessions, incorporating elements of mindfulness, SEL, and the council method, demonstrated improvements in emotional, conduct, relationship, and prosocial behavior. Conclusion: The partnership between SENTE and ICS provides an effective model for addressing urban violence in Brazilian cities. By integrating mindfulness and SEL into school curricula, this approach enhances mental health and reduces violence among students. Future efforts should focus on sustainable implementation strategies and adequate teacher training to ensure long-term success.

This article describes the process of developing an academic and community participatory action research partnership on Inuit youth and violence prevention through social media. Pauktuutit Inuit Women of Canada chose the topic, defined the research goals, co-developed the first draft of the project and its methodology, established and chaired an Inuit advisory committee, spearheaded consultations with other Inuit organizations to refine the methodology, and co-facilitated a focus group. The “action” part of the project involved using the research results to develop with Inuit youth an outreach strategy to prevent violence and promote health via social media. The article discusses the research process, which was guided by Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit (traditional values) and which used a methodology redesigned by Inuit, including youth and elders. The result was a violence prevention focus group for Inuit aged 18 to 25, co-led by the Mamisarvik Healing Centre, and an online survey of social media use among Inuit aged 18 to 25. This participatory action research process is presented as a potential model for academic-community partnerships.

Initially, the text gives an overview of the wider socioeconomic context of local social deprivation, heroin use and squatting the area experienced in the 1980s, through to the 1990s and the investment programmes (Sure Start, Children’s Centres, Single Regenerational Budget, and community development projects of the late 1990s and early 2000s. The chapter will then consider the impact of moves to Arm’s Length Management Organizations for council housing stock and the reduction on funding for social projects, through to the 2011 austerity budgets of the coalition and Conservative governments. This is discussed against the backdrop of historical and contemporary criminalization of young Black men, showing how despite successive reports and influential sociological texts calling for change, not enough progress has been made. The chapter then outlines some of the more recent academic research on street culture, youth violence, and child criminal exploitation. The chapter will end by outlining the more recent policy developments to address serious youth violence, including programmes attached to enforcement such as Operation Shield, the Youth Justice Board’s Child First strategy, the government’s serious youth violence strategy, the development of VRUs and third sector and statutory partnership approaches to address youth safety.

Abstract This chapter begins the discussion of issues and strategies for dealing with the youth gang problem, with special emphasis on community mobilization. It stresses the importance of defining the problem and creating policies and programs directed at particular types and levels of the problem. First, however, it summarizes strategies used during recent decades for dealing with delinquent groups and gangs, particularly at the community level. To a large extent, what is past is prologue. There are both continuity and change in the policies and practices that show promise in dealing with gang issues. The challenge is to create a new paradigm of action that modifies past approaches to make them relevant to current and evolving situations. I describe five strategies for dealing with gang problems in different community contexts. The discussion of planning focuses on definitions of the gang incident, assessment of com munity problems and resources, development of appropriate strategies and inter organizational structures, targeting of different gangs and gang youths, and setting of priorities.

In this chapter, the author discusses the impact of current trends within policymaking at national and European level. The author then posits that policymaking around youth violence should occur at a macro (national) and micro (local) level, employing regular ‘round tables’ to discuss the contribution of youth work. Youth workers and young people should be actively involved in these as part of a culture of research and reflection. Contracting and commissioning regimes should be minimised in order to facilitate strongly collaborative (rather than competitive) partnership-working cultures and other professional training courses should include sensitisation to youth work methodologies. Policy needs to be underpinned by a recognition that youth work offers a socio-educational approach to violence prevention that can respond at all the levels outlined in our model, including the structural. Finally, the chapter explores the politics of public space, arguing that policy should formally recognise the positive value of young people’s social mixing, especially in public space, and re-evaluate policies that discourage this mixing.

Youth violence is a growing public health phenomenon that plagues communities both nationally and internationally, leading to billions of dollars in costly consequences. Youth violence ranks among the top five causes of death among youth in the United States. The development of violence risk assessment tools that identify at-risk youth measures risk factors that lead to violent behavior. In addition, some risk assessment tools identify risk-reduction interventions used to reduce the risk of future or chronic violence. More recent research has focused on individual differences in risk and resilience factors of youth. Moreover, researchers have identified both gender and ethnic differences in risk and resilience models utilized for risk reduction. However, the development and evolution of risk assessment for future violence among youth should not stagnate, as gender and ethnic differences should be incorporated into revised and new assessment tools. After carefully considering the available research, violence assessments should be refined to include gender and culturally relevant considerations to become a reliable and valid resource that is both gender and culturally inclusive and unbiased.

This chapter explores how the community can become a part of a culture of violence, both resisting and exacerbating it. Members of the community have mixed feelings about whether to escape from, or try to work with, the violence in their communities. The authors demonstrate how the concept of ‘learned helplessness’ may be useful to explain the ‘habitus’ of some communities around violence and argue that initiatives aimed at preventing violence should focus on developing community self-efficacy and self-belief. Workers need to help communities explore their understanding of violence and the part it plays in their culture. The authors introduce the notion of home-grown workers as valuable assets within youth and community work and debate the pros and cons of such worker identities. The authors discuss the challenges inherent in multi-agency work, illustrating the need for other agencies to understand that there is a need for youth workers to professionally distance themselves from some aspects of partnership working where it facilitates the development and maintenance of relationships with young people involved in violence.

Young people, as the most sensitive category of society, are daily exposed to hate speech through numerous communication channels. Media content that promotes violence, content that clearly expresses intolerance towards differences, content that promotes wrong value systems and allows daily disparagement, insults and belittling, contribute to the creation of an inadequate society for growing up and educating young people. Precisely with the aim of determining the attitude of youth towards hate speech to which they are exposed in the online space, a survey was conducted on a sample of 108 respondents. The results of the survey showed that more than 90% of young people witnessed some form of hate speech, which was most often directed at political dissenters or members of the LGTB+ community. Also, in the largest percentage, they condemn every form of violence, including verbal violence, believing that hate speech on the Internet can affect mental health. However, young people are not sufficiently informed about hate speech and do not know how to react in situations where they are exposed to it. Additional education is necessary, as well as the reduction of content that propagates this type of communication.

This research report is a case study on the relationship between trauma, peacebuilding, and reintegration for conflict-affected youth in the Central African Republic (CAR) following the 2019 peace agreement. Based on qualitative research fielded in Spring 2022, the study examines how youth experience conflict, trauma, and reintegration in CAR, highlighting individual experiences through a participant narrative approach. In doing so, the report provides localized insight into the challenges that impact social reintegration and cohesion in fragile, conflict-affected contexts. The report further underscores the implications of these insights for local and international efforts to establish peace and security through disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration (DDR) programs and community violence reduction (CVR) initiatives. In addition to standard data collection methods such as interviews and focus group discussions, data collection undertaken for this report utilized a trauma-informed method called body mapping. The use of body maps—life size images of a human body with visual representations of experiences— in research can offer a means for individuals to reflect on potentially difficult experiences through a non-verbal process. Given the potential relevance of this tool in future studies examining the nexus between conflict, reintegration, mental health, and trauma, this report also includes discussion of the implementation of this method with considerations for others hoping to adapt it for their own use.

This report presents exploratory research into the potential of the World Food Programme’s (WFP) crisis response in Nigeria to contribute to a reduction in direct violence, enhance basic physical security and increase stability. The findings are based on a desk review of programme documents and in-depth interviews with various stakeholders and project site visits by locally-based researchers across the three states in North-East Nigeria: Borno, Adamawa and Yobe. Additionally, relevant questions were added to the WFP Food Security Outcome Monitoring (FSOM) survey with intended beneficiaries. The findings highlight that WFP programming could contribute to enhancing stability in north-east Nigeria if WFP were to intentionally seek to do so. This report therefore makes eight recommendations. This report is the first in as series of three. The series is part of phase II of the SIPRI–WFP knowledge partnership and investigates WFP's contributions to improving the prospects for peace in Nigeria. The Nigeria case study research focuses on three thematic areas: stabilization, cash-based transfers (CBTs) and measurement.
