Using a national sample of kindergarten to eighth grade students from Catholic and public schools who took MAP Growth assessments, we examine achievement growth over time between sectors. Our findings suggest that while Catholic school students score higher in math and reading than public school students on average, they also enter each school year at a higher level. Public school students close this gap to some degree during the school year. Additionally, these patterns varied by age and subject. Catholic school students in the earlier grades show less growth in both reading and math during the academic year compared to their public school peers, but in middle school growth patterns in math were comparable across sectors.

This assignment investigates the effects of various questioning strategies on the engagement and attainment of a Year 8 Classics class1. I became increasingly interested in questioning whilst reading more widely about Assessment for Learning (AfL) for my School Experience Report (SER), and decided that the omnipresence of questioning in every classroom would make it a valuable focus for this report. Building on my understanding of the importance of questioning as an AfL strategy, my aim was to devise a series of lessons making explicit use of different types of questioning and to analyse the relative successes and failures of each approach. This was measured by assessing overall class participation and by specifically studying the responses and involvement of five ‘focus’ students. Profiles of these students are below and each student has been allocated a pseudonym.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine eight years of quantitative and qualitative student feedback on library services collected through an institution-wide student satisfaction survey. Design/methodology/approach This paper utilizes data collected during an eight-year period from the college’s student satisfaction survey. This survey contained 40 questions which addressed topics concerning the college’s 13 major departments. Six of the questions were devoted to library services. Findings Over the eight years surveyed, across all divisions surveyed (undergraduate students, graduate students and graduate Saturday students), students on average tended to select “agree” or “strongly agree” with the following six questions asked: The materials in the library meet my course requirements. The library has enough laptop computers for student use. The instructional materials for using the online databases are helpful. The library hours match my schedule and needs. The library equipment is in good working order. The library is generally quiet and suitable for study. Originality/value This institutionally crafted, mixed methods survey was deployed over an eight-year period at a relatively minimal cost (in-house staff hours were used to analyze the data gathered and paper Scantron sheets were used to deploy). Furthermore, rich data were gathered from a relatively simple instrument and this information was used to make institution-wide decisions.

The aim of the study was to examine the lexical errors made by EFL students. The technique for eliciting information employed was an achievement test. A sample of 30 Saudi female students was asked to write essays in English that were assessed by the researcher. The students were all majoring in English in the third year at King Khalid University. James (1998) taxonomy was selected as the most comprehensive framework for the analysis of the lexical errors in the students' writing. A total of 137 lexical errors were identified and analysed. These errors were divided into formal 117 (85.40) and semantic 20 (14.60). Formal mis- selection 54 (39.42) was the most frequent major category of lexical formal errors while mis-formation 15 (10.95) was the least frequent one. Confusion of sense relations 14 (10.22) was the most frequent among lexical semantic errors. At the individual level of lexical formal errors, the most problematic words for students were the vowel based types 24 (17.52) and borrowing and blending were not problematic at all. At the individual level of lexical semantic errors, the most problematic words for students were near synonyms 8 (5.84) and the least problematic words were general terms for specific ones and overtly specific terms 1 (0.73).Pedagogical implications for teaching vocabulary to EFL learners and recommendations for areas for further research were suggested.

This study aimed to identify and rank the personal, family-related, social, and academic correlates of depressive symptoms in first-year college students. A questionnaire that included the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) was administered to 389 first-year college students (mean age = 18.9; SD = 3.38; 59.4% female). Eight variables contributed uniquely to the variance of depressive symptoms and were, in decreasing order of importance: (1) the absence of personal goals, (2) a high level of anxiety and (3) of dysfunctional thoughts regarding success, (4) a lack of emotional adjustment to college, (5) being female, (6) receiving little warmth and encouragement of autonomy from one’s mother and (7) from one’s father, and (8) being attracted to members of the opposite or both sexes. These results suggest that a multimodal intervention is required to support students’ mental health.

IntroductionThe ability to solve problems and make decisions creatively has become paramount to new nursing graduates, as these skills assist them with recognizing and evaluating situations that require prompt attention. This study was done to determine nursing student’s problem solving skills in various years of their four-year program.MaterialsThis is a cross-sectional study. Three hundred and twenty two undergraduate nursing students in BSc nursing program participated in this study. The study setting was Nursing School of Iran University of Medical Sciences. The Problem Solving Inventory (PSI; Heppner & Petersen, 1982) was used to data gathering. The scale was divided into three subscales including: problem-solving confidence, approaching avoidance style, and personal control. Low scores were representative of a positive judgment and high scores indicated a poorer judgment of problem-solving abilities. Students involved in the study signed the study Informed consent.ResultsFindings showed that the mean score of problem solving skill was 89.5 ± 21.51. First year students were found to have a mean score of 89.13 ± 18.71, second year students had a mean of 91.57 ± 1.87. The mean score of third year was 91.52 ± 20.8 and for fourth year students was 84.18 ± 27.47. When these results are compared, no significant differences occurred among the student in different years, as well as no difference between nursing students in 3 subscales of problem solving was seen.ConclusionsIt is expected that Nursing school produce practitioners who have the ability to solve problems and make decisions.

Removing the rigidity from Traditional Viva (TV) and making it flexible and easy with structured viva (SV) can drastically boost students' preparedness to appear confident in exam so that their knowledge and performance can improve. This study was conducted to identify the perception of faculties and students about SV and to evaluate the effect of SV on performance of students. After taking permission from Ethical committee, all willing students of first MBBS (2020-21), Government Medical College, Surat were enrolled in the study and were divided into 8 batches among 8 faculties. Pre validated SV cards were prepared well in advance. At the end of viva the pre-validated Questionnaire was given to collect their feedbacks for SV. Unpaired Student's t test and paired t test was applied for statistical analysis. When calculated statistically, it was found that, except for lower limb, students achieved more marks with SV as compared to TV. When combined and compared, the total marks obtained by the students in SV were more than the marks obtained in TV. The results from students' perspective suggests that SV is a more precise and unbiased way of practical examination of viva. It is valid, reliable and not/less subjective. Overall, Time consumption, Ease of execution, Ease of understanding and Ease of assessment make the SV a very good and noticeable option to TV. Considering faculties’ perception which was reflected as mixed responses, we can still create a good framework for installation of SV as a formative assessment method.

This thesis uses snowball to improve student reading with the research question, "How to use snowball throwing in SMPN's second-year students. This research employed Classroom Action Research (CAR) with cycles: first cycle, second cycle. Each cycle consists of four steps: planning. Acting, observing, reflecting. Four meetings during the research cycle. Class VIII, three samples of this study, consisted of 20 students. The study result revealed that Cycle 2 was better than Cycle one scores. During the lesson, the students showed great enthusiasm. Cycle 2's mean score is 82,75, and the percentage of student activity observation The student reading mastery increases after Cycle 2. The appropriate way to teach reading using snowball throwing is: (1) giving students more motivation to build confidence and spirit to study hard and be active in learning. (2) Before starting the learning process, more explanation of the material and giving the game than allowing the students to say what they do not understand. (3) Giving reward/gift for appreciation, (4) grouping students into a small group of 5 students. (5) Narrative text glossaries (6) Observers and writers were observing student activities. (7) Testing students to know the students ' improvement in reading after Using Snowball Throwing Learning (focus on the narrative text)

Introduction Pharmacists need to be at the forefront in advising consumers of dietary supplements (DS) about quality, claims, labeling, safety, efficacy, DS-drug interactions, and other aspects. Yet, the knowledge base of pharmacists and pharmacists-in-training about DS appears to be below expectation. Objective The goal of the study is to evaluate pharmacy student opinions about DS. Methodology A survey questionnaire was developed, tested, and distributed among students who were enrolled in the Drug Information class, which is a 2-credit hour mandatory course for all first professional pharmacy students at Howard University, College of Pharmacy. The data was analyzed using SPSS statistical analysis software. Results A total of 42 students (15 male, 27 female) participated in the survey. Of these, 25 respondents (59.5%) felt comfortable about their knowledge of DS, while only 14 (33.4%) reported participation in counselling (p=0.0281). Most respondents (29; 69%) had used DS in the past, while 21 (50%) claimed they used DS at the time of the survey. To a specific query in the questionnaire regarding lycopene-containing food items, 28 (66.7%) agreed they would use such foods in the future for health benefits. Analysis of the survey data revealed no statistical differences between the responses of male and female students (p>0.05 for all the five questionnaire items). Conclusion In a survey of 42 pharmacy students at Howard University College Pharmacy, over half (59.5%) felt comfortable about their knowledge of DS. About one-third students (33%) reported they were involved in patient counseling and interaction. Over two-third respondents (69%) took DS in the past, while half were taking DS at the time of the survey.

BackgroundSmokers who start smoking at an early age are less likely to quit and more likely to die from their habit. Evidence from the USTruth®campaign suggests that interventions focusing on tobacco industry practices and ethics may be effective in preventing smoking uptake.ObjectivesIn an exploratory study, to develop, pilot and provide preliminary evidence of the acceptability and effectiveness of Operation Smoke Storm, a school-based intervention based on the premise of theTruth®campaign, to prevent smoking uptake.DesignMixed-methods, non-randomised controlled study. Component 1 was delivered to Year 7 students, and student focus groups and teacher interviews were conducted to refine the lessons and to develop components 2 and 3. The revised Year 7 lessons and accompanying family booklet were delivered to new Year 7 students 1 year later in one school only; Year 8 students in both schools received the booster session.Setting and participantsStudents in Years 7–8 (aged 11–13 years) in two UK schools.InterventionA three-component intervention comprising (1) three 50-minute classroom-based sessions in Year 7 in which students acted as secret agents to uncover industry practices through videos, quizzes, discussions and presentations; (2) an accompanying family booklet containing activities designed to stimulate discussions about smoking between parents and students; and (3) a 1-hour interactive classroom-based booster session for Year 8 students, in which students learnt about tobacco marketing strategies from the perspectives of an industry executive, a marketing company and a health campaigner.Main outcome measuresOdds ratios to compare the self-reported prevalence of ever smoking and susceptibility to smoking in Year 8 students after the delivery of the booster session in study schools compared with students in local control schools. Qualitative data on acceptability of the intervention.ResultsThe combined prevalence of ever smoking and susceptibility increased from 18.2% in Year 7 to 33.8% in Year 8. After adjusting for confounders there was no significant difference in the odds of a Year 8 student in an intervention school being an ever smoker or susceptible never smoker compared with controls [adjusted odds ratio (aOR) 1.28, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.83 to 1.97;p = 0.263] and no significant difference in the odds of ever smoking (aOR 0.82, 95% CI 0.42 to 1.58;p = 0.549). Students mostly enjoyed the intervention and acquired new knowledge that appeared to strengthen their aversion to smoking. Teachers liked the ‘off-the-shelf’ nature of the resource, although they highlighted differences by academic ability in the extent to which students understood the messages being presented. Use of the family component was low but it was received positively by those parents who did engage with it.LimitationsLogistical difficulties meant that students’ responses in Year 7 and Year 8 could not be linked; however, baseline smoking behaviours differed little between intervention and control schools, and analyses were adjusted for confounders measured at follow-up.ConclusionsOperation Smoke Storm is an acceptable resource for delivering smoking-prevention education but it does not appear to have reduced smoking and susceptibility.Future workThe lack of a strong signal for potential effectiveness, considered alongside logistical difficulties in recruiting and working with schools, suggests that a fully powered cluster randomised trial of the intervention is not warranted.FundingThe National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Public Health Research programme.

Introduction: Lice are widespread at a global scale and afflict all socioeconomic classes. Despite advanced healthcare, head lice are particularly prevalent among elementary school female students. Thus, the present research aims to explore pediculosis infection and its cofactors among 8-10-year-old female students in Jam County, Bushehr province, Iran, in 2019. Methodology: The present descriptive research was analytical in type. The research population comprised female elementary school students in Jam County, selected through multi-stage randomization. The final sample selected consisted of 854 participants. The data collection instruments were a questionnaire and an optic test of all students at school. SPSS 22 was used to statistically analyze the data via Chi-square test and multivariate logistic regression analysis. The significance level was set at <0.05. Findings: The mean age of the participating students was 9.5 years. The prevalence of head lice among this sample was 15.4% and was higher in urban areas than the rural. Statistically significant correlations were found between lice infection and variables including father’s occupation and education, mother’s occupation and education and having a bathroom at home (p<0.05). Conclusion: The prevalence of lice in the present research showed to be higher that a body of related literature. Thus, it is essential to make preventive interventions to diagnose, treat and control pediculosis and consider the infection-related cofactors of lice infection in healthcare centers.

This study aims to determine the effect of RME on the spatial abilities of Year 8 students concerning cuboids and cubes. Geometry problems often experienced by junior high school students, such as difficulty knowing the difference between cuboids and cubes, difficulties showing elements of cuboids and cubes, and difficulty imagining cuboids and cubes in the case of rotation. The teacher should not underestimate it because it will impact the next level of learning. Besides, spatial abilities are closely related to other mathematical concepts. One alternative is using RME. This research employed the quasi-experimental method, and samples were selected using purposive sampling techniques. The two classes were selected as samples in this study: the experimental and the control classes. Before conducting the main analysis test, the pre-test score students were tested with the t-test. The initial conclusion was that there was no difference in the spatial ability of the experimental class and the control class. The main analytic test in the post-test was done using U-test. The post-test results show that the average score of the experimental class is higher than the control class; RME positively influences students' spatial abilities.

Objective To determine first-year student pharmacists’ views on the opioid epidemic. Methods First-year pharmacy students were asked to complete an online survey to assess their views and opinions on the current opioid crisis using Likert-scale type questions. Results Forty-four pharmacy students were surveyed, and all participants completed survey questions, 100% response rate. Majority of participants were female (N=34, 77.3%), with more than half of participants falling in the age range of 18-24 (N=25, 56.8%). Geographically, most of the participants home residences are in other states out of the DC, Maryland, Virginia (N=25, 56.9%). In addition, majority of participants worked before starting pharmacy school (N=42, 95.5%) and a majority had a pharmacy and healthrelated occupations before pharmacy school (N=36; 81.9%). Most study participants reported an annual income of less than $10,000 (N=17, 38.6%) and obtained a bachelor’s degree (N=26, 59.1%). Majority of participants strongly agree that the opioid epidemic is becoming a severe crisis for society (N=42; 95.5%) and that opioid should be readily available when it is medically necessary to people (N=27; 61.4%). When asked if they know anyone personally who suffers from the opioid crisis, over three-quarter (N=34; 77.3%) said no. However, over two-third (N=29; 65.9%) of participants said that they have taken opioids in the past themselves to relieve pain. Although, almost all of them strongly agree that prescription opioids are addictive (N=42; 95.5.%); about eighty percent (N=35; 79.5%) agree that taking opioids is an effective way to alleviate severe pain. Conclusion Our results indicate that pharmacy students perceive the opioid epidemic as a crisis and despite their views that opioids are addictive and knowing someone who suffers from opioid use disorder, they believe opioids are a clinically effective way to alleviate pain.

The purpose of the conference presentation upon which this paper is inspired was to present an innovative approach to motivate students to write in a second language during a first-year Spanish class. Usually, students comply with writing exercises that convey basic thoughts, due to constrained vocabulary and limited knowledge of grammatical concepts. The pieces they create are often simple repetitions of material already present in the textbook. In this case, the idea was to create a project that would be developed during the whole academic year. It consisted of creating a story of 100 words or less that would provoke the reader to think beyond the text and also motivate him/her to make connections between the title, the content, and the hidden message of the story. The format was a postcard, and the students had to add a creative piece of art on one side of the postcard and a story on the opposite side. The artwork was intended to add to the story. The objective of the project was for students to use their higher order cognitive abilities and subsequently realize higher levels of achievement (Burrowes, 2003; Railsback, 2002).The activity also aimed to encourage deeper student learning and self-regulated learning behaviours (Herington, 2008). The challenge was obvious: would students feel intimidated when presented with the project? How would they respond to the strict demands of the assignment? How would they deal with the creative aspect? How would they respond to formative feedback? How would they react to the public exhibition of their work? Throughout this article, responses to these queries are presented along with a discussion on how the activity could be applied across disciplines with similar end results. I hope this is the beginning of a productive dialogue.

Abstract This retrospective study aimed to compare the annual failure rate (AFR), reasons for failure and factors influencing survival of posterior and anterior composite restorations placed by undergraduate students. Composite restorations placed by undergraduate students were evaluated. The restorations should be in occlusion, with at least one adjacent tooth; and patients should have been present for check-up, with at least 1 annual recall. The investigation was performed in two separate analysis: 1) dental electronic records of 100 patients (n=333 restorations) were selected to assess factors influencing survival; 2) clinical evaluation of 30 patients by examining restorations (n=123) to assess clinical characteristics and failure type distribution. Data were subjected to Kaplan-Meier method, Log-rank test, Cox regression and Fisher’s Exact test (p<0.05). After 8-year period, the AFR was 2.62%. There was difference between anterior and posterior restorations (p=0.005), with anterior showing a higher AFR. The patient caries-risk (p<0.001) and the number of surfaces restored (p=0.010) affected restoration survival. The superficial brightness (p=0.029), fracture (p=0.025) and retention (p=0.011) were clinical criteria with differences between anterior and posterior restorations. Income (p<0.001), caries activity (p<0.001), caries risk (p<0.001) and oclusal risk (p<0.001) also influenced on the restorations survival. After 8-year, the AFR of restorations placed by undergraduate students was acceptable and affected by patient risk factors and the position of the tooth in the arch: anterior restorations failed more than posterior.

Faculty members were asked to list major and minor concepts of their case-based session presented during the 12-week 3rd-year surgical clerkship. After each session, students were queried to list the key concepts presented. Data were collected from two groups: one at the end of an academic year and a second at the beginning of the next academic year. Faculty members listed a median of 10 major and 15 minor concepts. The mean number of matched major concepts ranged from 0.2 to 4, and from 0.2 to 3.4 for minor concepts. In a comparative analysis, the end-of-the-year students listed a higher number of matched concepts for 17 of the 20 sessions than the beginning of the year students (8 sessions reached statistical significance, P < 0.05). The current case-based teaching method is not effective in emphasizing key concepts to students. Reformatting cases to better align with key concepts may be one solution to enhance a student's ability to grasp key concepts. Students at the end of the academic year outperformed those at the beginning of the year. This additional variable needs to be considered by faculty and incorporated into their teaching techniques.

ObjectivesEvidence from the USTruthcampaign suggests that interventions focusing on tobacco industry practices and ethics may be effective in preventing youth smoking uptake. We developed, piloted and evaluated a school-based intervention based on this premise.MethodsExploratory study students in years 7–8 (aged 11–13) in two UK schools receivedOperation Smoke Storm, comprising three 50 min classroom-based sessions in year 7, an accompanying family booklet and a 1-hour classroom-based booster session in year 8. We compared the risk and odds of ever smoking and susceptibility to smoking in year 8 students in study schools postintervention with students in control schools. Focus groups and interviews with students, teachers and parents evaluated the acceptability of the intervention.ResultsIn intervention schools, the combined prevalence of ever smoking and susceptibility increased from 18.2% in year 7 to 33.8% in year 8. There was no significant difference in the odds of a year 8 student in an intervention school being an ever smoker or susceptible never smoker compared with controls (adjusted OR (aOR) 1.28, 95% CI 0.83 to 1.97, p=0.263) and no significant difference in the odds of ever smoking (aOR 0.82, 95% CI 0.42 to 1.58, p=0.549). Teachers highlighted differences by academic ability in how well the messages presented were understood. Use of the family component was low but was received positively by parents who engaged with it.ConclusionsOperation Smoke Stormis an acceptable resource for delivering smoking-prevention education, but it does not appear to have reduced smoking and susceptibility.

This study aimed to determine the effect of sleep quantity and quality via the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) on students’ academic achievement in their first year of university study. In this cross-sectional study, 193 students (102 female, 91 male, mean ± SD; age = 19.3 ± 2.9 y) from an undergraduate Health degree in New Zealand completed the PSQI four weeks prior to the end of the semester in their first year of university study. Results from three core subjects in the first semester were averaged and correlations between the PSQI and academic success were evaluated using Spearman’s rho (ρ). The group were also trichotomized using a PSQI global score of ≤5 as the threshold for “good” sleepers (n = 62, 32%), a score of 5–8 for “moderate” sleepers (n = 63, 33%) and a score ≥8 to characterize “poor” sleepers (n = 68, 35%). Overall, students averaged 7 h 37 min of self-reported sleep duration with an average bedtime of 22:55 p.m. and wake time of 8:01 a.m. There was a significant, small inverse relationship between academic performance and bedtime (p = 0.03, ρ = −0.14), with those going to bed earlier having superior academic success. The trichotomized data demonstrated no significant differences in academic performance between students with poor, moderate and good sleep quality (p = 0.92). Later bedtimes were associated with lower academic performance in a group of first year university students. However, there were no other relationships observed between academic success and self-reported sleep quality or quantity as determined by the PSQI. Enhancing awareness of the impact of sleep timing on academic success should be prioritized and strategies to improve sleep hygiene should be promoted to university students.

Academic expectations are an important variable in the explanation of adaptation and academic success in higher education. This paper uses latent profile analysis as a person-centered statistical approach to classify students into groups of similar types of expectations for higher education, at the beginning of the first year in university. Participants were 2,478 first-year Portuguese students. Based on the scores of seven dimensions of expectations, we identified six classes of students. Most students (84%) presented moderate levels of expectations, while 8% and 4%, respectively, reported very high and low expectations. One class represented a group of students (4%) with high expectations for the quality of education and for political engagement and citizenship and lower expectations for social interaction and attending to social pressures. Male and older students showed more positive expectations. Students from privileged family backgrounds are more likely to present higher expectations for political engagement and citizenship experiences, and lower expectations for social interaction and leisure and attending to social pressures.
