Abstract Do students believe that Year 12 LOTE courses contribute to the development of oral and aural proficiency in the target language? Attitudinal and performance data collected from university French 1 students shed some light on students’ satisfaction with their Year 12 LOTE course and on the relationship among perceived outcomes, course components, language of instruction and language performance. The findings, while not definitive, provide some insights for secondary and tertiary LOTE teachers, together with some baseline data for further research into the success of school language programs.

Accuracy of self-assessment is critical to effective career planning. Over a two year period, a total of 425 students were asked to estimate their Tertiary Entrance Rank (TER) after sitting the final Year 12 examination. Estimates were compared with their actual rank obtained in the state examination. On average males performed worse than expected while females performed better, although neither group self-assessed very accurately. Results are discussed in relation to the reasons for the inaccuracy, and implications for career planning are outlined.

The light is a separate entity in the area, independent sources that produce it and the effects it causes during its spread. In several research focused on representations of light that are children from 5 to 15 years found that these representations are often incompatible with the scientific model. 112 (60 boys and 62 girls) participated in this research where we studied representations of children 11-12 years on the light. As a technique of research we chose the directive individual interview. The results of the research show that children of 11-12 years, use different categories of representations for the light.

This study explored the potential benefits of an eight-week relaxation training program for students in their final year of high school. The relaxation program was structured around the concept of applied relaxation, consisting of a blend of progressive muscle relaxation, cue-controlled, and rapid relaxation, whilst also incorporating a cognitive coping strategies component, and goal-directed visualisation. Treatment participants were compared with control group members on measures of anxiety, stress, and locus of control. Overall, the results support the efficacy of a school-based relaxation training program in reducing student stress and anxiety levels, but not on influencing locus of control orientation towards internality. Furthermore the results of this project indicate that it is possible to incorporate relaxation training within a preventative framework as part of the regular school curriculum.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the association between engagement indicators and intent to persist of first-year full-time Hispanic students attending public versus private universities. Design/methodology/approach Metadata from the Your First College Year survey from the Higher Education Research Institute (HERI) were selected for this study. The approach included using a descriptive correlational design and regression analysis to examine the relationship between engagement indicators and persistence among first-year, full-time Hispanic students and persistence. Purposeful sampling obtained from the HERI data set resulted in a sample size of 1,206 students who attended public institutions and 1,187 students who attended private institutions. Findings Analysis of the results disclosed a positive correlation between first-year Hispanic students’ intent to persist, satisfaction with peer interactions, amount of contact with faculty, first-year programs and sense of belonging. The results of the analysis disclosed differences between public and private institutions. Of the collective variables, satisfaction with amount of contact with faculty and sense of belonging are significant predictors of persistence. Research limitations/implications The sample of the study was limited to the use of archival data and the responses to specific questions obtained from the 2014 YFCY survey. Factors such as insufficient experience at the college students are attending, unwillingness to provide honest feedback and exaggerating specific areas of their behavior or performance may affect students who respond to surveys (Kuh, 2004), affecting the accuracy of the data. Further, 89.7 per cent of the variance in persistence has not been explained. Adding or using different variables and utilizing a more advanced statistical technique may account for additional variance. Cause and effect cannot be determined from correlational analysis, and the possibility exists that an unknown variable may be the cause of a correlation within the study. Incomplete information from predictors, complete separation and overdispersion can lead to SPSS output errors for logistic regression analysis. Social implications It is important for higher education administrators to understand the cultural differences of not only Hispanic students but other ethnic and racial groups. As a global society, public and private higher education institutions are looking for more inclusion of multi-cultural students. Recruitment is obviously important, but to recruit is not enough. It is the responsibility of higher education administrators to do all that is reasonably possible to retain students through graduation. Originality/value Studies have been conducted on academic disparities between Hispanic students and their White counterparts, but few studies exist on the factors associated to persistence among the first-year Hispanic student population. The results of this study may add to the existing body of knowledge and assist with faculty development of programs, decisions on class size, improvements to pedagogy and discussions to improve the campus climate for Hispanic students. Using the resources of HERI, future studies can be conducted involving other races and ethnicities.

Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui gambaran perilaku bullying siswa usia 10-12 Tahun di Ungaran. Desain penelitian ini deskriptif analitik dengan pendekatan survei. Populasi penelitian ini adalah siswa usia 10-12 tahun di Ungaran, yaitu sebanyak 117 siswa dengan sampel adalah 91 siswa menggunakan teknik proportional random sampling. Alat pengambilan data menggunakan kuesioner. Analisis data yang digunakan distribusi frekuensi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan siswa usia 10-12 tahun sebagian besar tidak mengalami perilaku bullying (68,1%). Sebaiknya anak sekolah usia 10-12 tahun meningkatkan rasa saling menghormati dan menghargai sehingga proses belajar dapat berjalan dengan baik. The purpose of this study was to describe bullying behaviorand social interaction capabilities of students aged 10-12 year sold in Ungaran. The study design was descriptive analytic with survey approach. This study population was the student saged 10-12 year sold in Ungaran, as many as 117 people where the samples were 91 students using proportionate random sampling technique. Data collecting tool used questionnaires. Analysis of the data used the frequency distribution.The results showed that students aged 10-12 years were mostly in the category of not bullying (68.1%). We recommend that school children aged 10-12 should improve mutual respect and appreciating so that the learning process can run well. Keywords : Bullying Behavior, Students Aged 10-12 Years Old.

The aim of this empirical research was to examine the correlations between the groups of variables of anthropometric characteristics (16) and motor skills (21) among 154 students (AM = 11,53 SD = 1,12). The method of canonical correlation analysis was used to assess the correlation between the pairs of linear functions of predictor and criterion variables. The obtained canonical coefficients and canonical weights revealed that, with significance level (p ≤ 0,0,5 or p ≤ 0,01), there is a high level of correlation between linear combinations of the examined morphological characteristics and motor skills, where the explained mutual variance was 80% for the first and 33% for the second canonical function. The extracted relevant canonical pairs were interpreted hypothetically as "integrated morphological factor and the factor of static and repetitive strength and coordination", and the second one was interpreted as "morphological factor and the factor of explosive strength". The set of the first canonical morphological factor and the factor of static and repetitive strength, and coordination, is the maximum weight on the variables body mass, body height, forearm circumference, horizontal reverse plank, knee push-ups, and stick mobility, while the biggest contribution to the structure of the second canonical morphological factor and the factor of static and repetitive strength have variables 20m sprint with standing start, standing long jump, hand tapping and foot tapping. The obtained results of the analyzed bicomponent canonical model reveal more defined and predictable structure of the correlation between anthropometric characteristics and motor manifestations, and therefore give guidelines for planning, developing and controlling the training processes during physical education classes.

The aim of this study was to assess psychological morbidity and symptoms of burnout in medical students during their undergraduate training, and to identify baseline factors that predict psychological morbidity in students in the final year of the course. It was a 5-year prospective longitudinal cohort study. Students were assessed in years 1, 4 and 5 of their medical undergraduate training by means of the GHQ-12 and the Maslach Burnout Inventory. 172 (84.3%), 157 (77.0%) and 155 (75.9%) students out of an original group of 204 completed assessments in years 1, 4 and 5, respectively. 18 students were above threshold on the GHQ-12 on all three occasions, 25 on two occasions and 43 on one occasion; 69 students were never a ‘case’. Students who were cases on two or more occasions were more likely to find the medical course stressful during the first year, but not subsequent years. There was no significant difference between the percentages of men and women who scored as cases on the GHQ-12 in any of the years. The best predictor of psychological morbidity in the final year of the course was the GHQ-12 score in year 1. This study suggests that a small group of students repeatedly experience psychological distress during their medical training.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze drug use trends among college students in 1996, 2001 and 2009. METHODS: A cross-sectional epidemiological study with a multistage stratified cluster sample with 9,974 college students was conducted in the city of São Paulo, southeastern Brazil. An anonymous self-administered questionnaire was used to collect information on drug use assessed in lifetime, the preceding 12 months and the preceding 30 days. The Bonferroni correction was used for multiple comparisons of drug use rates between surveys. RESULTS: There were changes in the lifetime use of tobacco and some other drugs (hallucinogens [6.1% to 8.8%], amphetamines [4.6% to 8.7%], and tranquilizers [5.7% to 8.2%]) from 1996 to 2009. Differences in the use of other drugs over the 12 months preceding the survey were also seen: reduced use of inhalants [9.0% to 4.8%] and increased use of amphetamines [2.4% to 4.8%]. There was a reduction in alcohol [72.9% to 62.1%], tobacco [21.3% to 17.2%] and marijuana [15.0% to 11.5%] use and an increase in amphetamine use [1.9% to 3.3%] in the preceeding 30 days. CONCLUSIONS: Over the 13-year study period, there was an increase in lifetime use of tobacco, hallucinogens, amphetamines, and tranquilizers. There was an increase in amphetamine use and a reduction in alcohol use during the preceding 12 months. There was an increase in amphetamine use during the preceding 30 days.

Mental disorders are among the most common and disabling conditions affecting children and adolescents. Patterns of school attendance among students with and without mental disorders were examined using data from the 2013–2014 Australian Child and Adolescent Survey of Mental Health and Wellbeing. One in seven school students had a mental disorder in the previous 12 months, with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and anxiety being the most common. Students with a mental disorder had lower school attendance – being absent for 11.8 days per year in Years 1–6, 23.1 days per year in Years 7–10 and 25.8 days per year in Years 11–12, on average. In comparison, students without mental disorders were absent an average of 8.3 days (Years 1–6), 10.6 days (Years 7–10) and 12.0 days (Years 11–12) per year. Among students with a mental disorder, absences due to the disorder accounted for 13.4% of all days absent from school. This increased across years in school from 8.9% in Years 1–6 to 16.6% in Years 11–12. Improving prevention, early intervention, treatment and management of mental disorders may lead to significant improvements in school attendance.

In order to investigate gender and ethnicity-based differences in scientific attitudes among Fijian students, the widely studied Test of Scientific Related Attitudes (TOSRA) was administered to 1401 senior secondary Fijian students (Years 11–13; approximately 15–18 years of age). Students generally had a positive attitude towards science overall in Years 11–13, with females showing a more positive attitude than males. By Year 13, the attitudes of females towards science had become more negative. The attitude of iTaukei students towards science started out lower than other ethnicities in Year 11 and increased during Year 12, before falling to below the starting attitude levels in Year 13. Fijian students of Indian descent generally had a positive attitude towards science that remained consistent throughout Years 11–13, with an increase in leisure and career interest in science in Year 13. A strong correlation was found between the ethnicity of a student and their first language. Continued science outreach programmes, particularly in Year 12, are important to achieve and retain scientific interest and attitudes among Fijian secondary students.

Few topics have garnered more attention in preservice teacher training and educational reform than student diversity and its influence on learning. However, the actual degree of cognitive diversity has yet to be considered regarding instructional implications for advanced learners. We used four data sets (three state-level and one national) from diverse contexts to evaluate how many students perform above grade level in English Language Arts and mathematics. Results revealed that among American elementary and middle school students, 20% to 49% in English Language Arts and 14% to 37% in mathematics scored 1 year or more above grade level. We address what these findings imply for K-12 schools, grouping decisions, and educational policies that strive to foster advanced abilities.

Demonstrating how science relates to human health is an important step for generating K–12 student interest in health-related careers. Science outreach is often performed in urban areas; however, ~20% of K–12 schools are in rural areas. Michigan Technological University is located in Michigan’s upper peninsula, which accounts for 30% of the state’s land mass but only 3% of the total population. Our goal was to create a science outreach program for reaching K–12 students in our rural region. We assembled a team of undergraduate and graduate students, staff, and faculty to implement science outreach with K–12 students. Specifically, we leveraged existing national and international science outreach events [Physiology Friday, Physiology Understanding (PhUn) Week, National Biomechanics Day] to offer hands-on physiology and biomechanics activities during the year. Between 2016 and 2019, we connected with 31 K–12 schools and impacted 327 elementary (19%), 351 middle school (21%), and 1,018 high school (60%) students (total impact 1,696). Over 90% of the outreach visits took place at the K–12 schools. The hands-on activities were delivered by more than 85 undergraduate and graduate students and 10 faculty. Together, the supportive culture and resources within the department (e.g., outreach coordinator, participation from students and faculty, grant funding) were key to developing the program. We recommend starting with a single outreach event, working as a team, and being flexible with K–12 schools. The program also provided service-learning and professional development opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students and faculty. Our robust science outreach program promoted “PhUn” all year-round with rural K–12 students.

This study was aimed to identify t The Effectiveness of Using Communicative Approach in Teaching the Simple Past Tense. This research employed quantitative research method. The design of the collecting the data that used in research are, questioner method, test method, library method, observation method and interview method. This research was conducted at class of second year students of SMPN 12 Batam in the academic year 2018/2019. As for the time the researched held on 31 March 2019 until 25 May 2019. In this research, the populations of the study were students in second year students at SMPN 12 Batam in the academic year 2018/2019. There were students from two classes, whereas the samples are 62 students, where 30 students from class VIII-4 (control class) and 32 students from VIII-5 ( the experiment class). This research was concluded that the effectiveness of using communicative approach in teaching the simple past tense: A case study of second year students at SMPN 12 BATAM in the academic years 2018/2019. The result was the calculation of the t-test, it was obtained that the t-observed was 5.506 and t-table was 2.042 at the level of significant 0, 05. It was obtaining that t- observed > t-table, it means the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and Ho rejected.

Abstract The present study explores how 12- and 15-year-old immersion students (n=75 and n=73) produce subordinate questions in Swedish on a written test. Previous studies are sparse, but they report difficulties with both subject-verb word order and use of the subjunctor om and the subject marker som occurring in these clauses; informants with varying ages and competence levels struggle with similar problems. However, the acquisition order between these two types of constructions, a central theme in this study, has gained less attention. Analyses of the actual data show significant differences with varying effect sizes in accuracy between the different subcategories of subordinate questions and both informant groups. Insertion of grammatical words was mastered by significantly fewer informants than word order. Also, effect sizes were large in these contexts. Older informants do better than the younger ones, but the differences are not always statistically significant, as certain constructions are already mastered at a high level by the younger informants, whereas other constructions are still difficult for the older ones.

In Nigeria, an employer evaluates a student's academic performance using their CGPA score. For this study, data were collected from a student database of a private school in the south-west geopolitical zone in Nigeria. Regression analysis, correlation analysis, and analysis of variance (F-test) were employed to determine the study year that students perform better based on CGPA. According to the results, it was observed that students perform much better in year three (300 Level) and year four (400 Level) compared to other levels. In conclusion, we strongly recommend the private university to introduce program that will improve the academic performance of students from year one (100 level).

Background: The first contact with the dissection hall is an unforgettable, stressful but important step in the medical education. The present study aimed to assess the stress experienced just after one week of first dissection (IES1) and compare it with impact after 12 weeks (IES2) of first experience. Methods: In this prospective cohort study, we enrolled 100 first year medical students of B. P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences attending the cadaveric dissection. The questionnaire for Impact Event Scale (IES) was administered on two separate occasions after the human body dissection. Along with overall score for impact event, we also assessed the sub-scores of Intrusion and Avoidance. Results: The percentage of students having clinically important reaction (a score of 20 or above) after one week of first cadaveric dissection in both sub-scales of Intrusion and Avoidance were 2% and 6% respectively but were found to be reduced to 1% each after 12 weeks. The overall scores indicating traumatic stress reaction was found to be reduced to 2% from 8%. The comparison between IES1 and IES2 using Wilcoxon signed ranked test showed statistically significant difference (p < 0.001). The bivariate correlation analysis between IES 1 and IES 2 showed positive correlation with statistically significant level (rs = 0.25; p < 0.001). Conclusion: Overall score in students having traumatic stress reaction dropped by 6% after 12 weeks. The stress related to the human body dissection with respect to both Intrusion and Avoidance sub-scales in medical students reduced after the period of 12 weeks of first cadaver dissection.

A CIFRE is a contract between the National Association for Technical Research (ANRT) which manages the programme and a French firm, entitling the firm to assign an R&D project to a young professional under 26 years of age as part of his/her doctoral thesis. The graduate engineer gets a minimum salary of £12 500 per year from the firm, which receives £9000 directly from ANRT. This grant is awarded for three years for a project in collaboration with an academic laboratory at home or abroad. All industrial sectors are eligible to participate in the CIFRE programme as well as firms of all sizes and in all fields. After 10 years, 3 300 CIFRE contracts have been awarded and half of them are underway – 95% have led to a PhD and 80% to a professional career in industry.

Sport and physical activity contribute to people’s physical, mental, and social health. The state of students’ physical ability is an accurate and objective indicator, with the help of which the influence and efficiency of the educational process in physical education and sports can be revealed. The aim of this study was to determine the level of development of the physical ability of students in 5th and 6th grade, through analysis and evaluation, according to the new regulatory system for evaluation. The research was carried out with 75 pupils at a secondary school in the city of Sofi a. To realize it, we used a test battery that carries information about the significant indexes of physical fitness. The battery includes five tests: running 30 m., standing long jump with both feet, 3 kg medicine ball throwing with both hands from a standing position, running 200 m., and agility and spatial coordination test. The testing and mathematical-statistical methods (variation analysis comparative analysis with t-criterion of Student and sigma evaluation method) were used in our study. The analysis of the results showed that there was a statistically significant difference between the students from 5th and 6th grade, only in terms of the indicator of agility and spatial coordination. Such a difference was found in the same test, by gender and age, among the boys from the two study groups. Our research showed that the state of physical ability of the students participating in the study was at a good level, which corresponds to the average in the country.

This study aims to explore the online communication habits and practices of 12-14-year-old 50 students from an urban school. Measuring their answers on the Digital Native Scale of Timothy Teo (DNAS), this study refers to the suggested four-factor by the author, creating a framework for the analysis of their digital native profile: grown up with technology, comfortable with multi-tasking, reliant on graphics for communication, and thrive on instant rewards (Teo, 2013). The results of the study enhance the understanding of digital natives. As we expected, this research shows a high degree of comfort in online communication in their differentiated profile. It is relevant the issue of age when exemplifying digital natives’ skills. Also, it is estimated that there are similar behaviours, related with the debut age of technology use (4-5 years old). The most common actions in virtual space are surfing on the Internet, photographing, communicating, downloading, disseminating, adding to comments on colleagues’ posts. According to this study, the online communication practices of these 12-14-year-old students include in terms of content various symbols, instant bonuses, and feedback elements. From an educational point of view, these can be included in a structured manner of learning. The article proposes, in this view, several ways to integrate usual students’ communication practices in learning activities with the support of digital resources (virtual bulletin boards, online presentations, digital stories so on). The results indicate that students showed the digital native characteristics, that can be successfully used in school.

Background The national oral health survey-Qatar was carried out in 2011 in an attempt to establish the baseline information about oral health status among youth. This article describes the oral health status of 12 and 15-year-old students in Qatar. Methods Cross-sectional survey data were analyzed for 12 (N=1060) and 15 (N=1064) year-old students. The caries status based on decayed, missing, filled teeth or DMFT=0 (no caries) & DMFT≥1 (caries present). Mean indices among nationalities and sex were compared by student’s t-test. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to compare means by the type of the school. Logistic regression was used to examine associations among available variables. Results In the overall sample, 53.3% (n=565) of 12-year-olds and 55.4% (n=589) of 15-year-olds had varying levels of dental caries. The odds of dental caries were higher among girls compared to boys aged 12 years (OR=1.3, CI=1.0-1.6, P=0.05) as well as 15 years old (OR=1.28, CI=1.01-1.6, P=0.04) respectively. By nationality, Qatari students had a higher mean DMFT value (1.3 ± 1.2) compared to non-Qataris (0.82 ± 1.1). The public/independent attendees had higher mean DMFT values (1.31 ± 1.2) compared to the other two school categories. Fifteen-year-old students had lower odds (OR=0.81, CI- 0.68-0.97, P=0.02) of gingival bleeding and higher odds (OR=1.68, CI=1.4-2.1, P<0.001) of calculus compared to 12-year-olds. Dental fluorosis was found among 15% of 12 years old and 16.6% of 15 years old. The odds of fluorosis were higher among 15 years old but this relationship was not significant (OR=1.1, CI=0.88-1.4, P=0.36). Lower odds of bleeding teeth (OR=0.81, CI=0.68-0.97, P=0.02) and higher odds of calculus were found among 15 years old (OR=1.68, CI=1.4-2.1, P<0.001) compared to 12 years. Conclusions The results provide directions to further strengthen the oral health strategies through various evidence-based interventions.Background

A total of 43 772 students in fifth grade were classified by sex and place of residence [urban/rural] in all districts and provinces of the country, and were examined to estimate the decayed, missing and filled [DMFT] teeth index and tooth brushing. Analysis revealed that the DMFT index in 12-year-old students was 1.67, which is considered low according to WHO criteria. The teeth with most caries were the first permanent molars. Objective: The aim of this study was to (1) generate a valid questionnaire to determine immunology knowledge, (2) compare immunology knowledge across 3 different cohorts of chiropractic students that had already studied immunology, (3) examine the attitudes of chiropractic students to the study of immunology, and (4) examine whether students' attitudes affected their knowledge levels. Methods: Factor analysis was used to refine an immunology knowledge and perceptions questionnaire that was generated by a group of experts that was then completed by 90 students. Immunology knowledge level of each of the cohorts was compared using a 1-way analysis of variance. Kappa statistics were used to measure agreement between 2 statements, and logistic regression was used to determine whether students' attitudes were associated with their knowledge levels. Results: There was a significant difference in the immunology knowledge levels across the 3 year groups (F[2, 87] = 4.78, p = .011). Fifth-year students (n = 26) demonstrated 25% less immunology knowledge than third-year students (n = 35; p = .005). Of 90 students, 64 agreed that immunology knowledge was important to chiropractors, and 53 agreed that immunology knowledge was important for the average person. No relationship existed between their value of immunology knowledge and their score on the multiple-choice questions. Conclusion: Third-year students' immunology knowledge was significantly higher than that of the fifth-year students. Students value immunology knowledge, but this does not translate to retention of this knowledge. The validated questionnaire is a useful tool for assessing immunology knowledge retention for undergraduate students.
