Streszczenie:
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to investigate web services (in the form of parameterised URLs), specifically in the context of the ScotlandsPlaces project. This involves cross‐domain querying, data retrieval and display via the development of a bespoke XML standard rather than existing XML formats and mapping between them.Design/methodology/approachIn looking at the different heritage domain datasets as well as the metadata formats used for storage and data exchange, the ScotlandsPlaces XML format is revealed as the most appropriate for this type of project. The nature of the project itself and the need for dynamic web services are in turn explored.FindingsIt was found that, due to the nature of the project, the combination of a bespoke ScotlandsPlaces XML format and a set of matching web services was the best choice in terms of the retrieval of different domain datasets, as well as the desired extensible nature of the project.Research limitations/implicationsIt may have proven useful to investigate the datasets of more ScotlandsPlaces partners, but as yet only a limited number of first phase partners' datasets could be studied, as the second phase of the project has yet to begin.Originality/valueRather than an information portal, the ScotlandsPlaces web site aggregates disparate types of record, whether site records, archival or otherwise, into a single web site and makes these records discoverable via geographical searching. Aggregated data are accessed through web service queries (using a bespoke XML format developed specifically for the project for data return) and allow partner organisations to add their datasets regardless of the organisational domain. The service also allows spatially referenced records to be plotted on to a geo‐browser via a KML file, which in turn lets users evaluate the results based on geographical location.

A number of object-oriented (OO) variants have so far been devised for Petri Nets (PN). However, none of these variants has ever been described using an open, independent format – such as XML. This article suggests several possibilities and advantages of such a description. The outlined XML language definition for the description of object-oriented Petri Nets (OOPN) is based on XMI (description of UML object-oriented models), SOX (simple description of general OO systems) and PNML (an XML-based language used for the description of structured and modular PN). For OOPN, the XML form of description represents a standard format for storing as well as for transfer between various OOPN-processing (analysis, simulation, ...) tools.

Streszczenie:
There are many ways to use open source code to implement digital standards for scholarly journal publishing. However, providing digital services using open-source code can be a challenge, especially for small and local academic society journals. This paper provides some critical examples of using some of the many open-source code resources available to the public. Journal Article Tag Suite (JATS) Extensible Markup Language (XML) has been established as an essential tool, and is now used by most journals for digital publication. JATS XML can be converted to other viewer formats, including Extensible Hypertext Markup Language, PubReader, and EPUB 3.0. It can also be used to create dynamic interactive PDFs. It can be converted to other XMLs, incluing Crossref XML, PubMed XML, and DOAJ XML. Open-source code published on GitHub, National Information Standards Organization, and the US National Library of Medicine can be used for Crossref XML deposition for digital object identifier and Crossmark stamp registration. These examples of open-source code need to be implemented on journal websites to provide local academic journal publishers with various critical functions. This paper provides instructions on the best ways to realize these digital standards so that journal content can be provided to readers in a more friendly and effective way.

The ability of the end user to work with a large amount of data from a large number of heterogeneous sources and at the same time get an effective result from the work is carried out through the use of graphical web interfaces built on the basis of XML technologies that allow displaying any structure of a file presented in XML format. As a data exchange method between applications on the Web, XML still lacks capabilities for identification of web resources and a system that uses them, and capabilities to express the knowledge provided by XLM documents. In this study, a web interface has been developed (a web-based server application), as an XML records editor that provides display forms for the creation and editing of XML documents and is able to adapt to the internal resources of the system used. The technology is based on the XSD data set schema transformation by the way of XSLT transformations. Screen forms are generated on the server side and are provided to the user with all the necessary tools for correct input and/or editing of heterogeneous data. A distinguishing characteristic of this technology is the ability to display both properly and improperly formed XML data. The developed graphical interface allows any application to automatically exchange and read information from other applications without human intervention, which significantly improves performance and ease of use. This software solution could be used both as an independent data building and editing module presented in the XML format, and as a built-in module plugged into various server software for heterogeneous information management systems

Uncertain relational data management has been investigated for a few years, but few works on uncertain XML. The natural structures with high flexibility make XML more appropriate for representing uncertain information. Based on the semantic of possible world and probabilistic models with independent distribution and mutual exclusive distribution nodes, the problem of how to generate instance from a probabilistic XML and calculate its probability was studied, which is one of the key problems of uncertain XML management. Moreover, an algorithm for a generating XML document from a probabilistic XML and calculating its probability are also proposed, which has linear time complexity. Finally, experiment results are made to show up the correct and efficiency of the algorithm.

Multiple interdependent issues negotiations have been widely studied since most real-world negotiation involves multiple interdependent issues. Our work focuses on negotiation with multiple interdependent issues in which agent utility functions are nonlinear. In the field of multiple issue negotiations, there are no established common testbeds for evaluating protocols. In this paper, we propose a common testbed creating tool based on XML that mainly covers the utility functions based on cube-constraints and cone-constraints. First, we propose a testbed generating tool that inputs configuration data and outputs XML formatted files that represent agent utility spaces. The current tool can produce four types of utility spaces: Random, A Single Hill, Two-Hills, and SeveralHills. These types are observed in real negotiation settings. Also we define the agent’s utility space information based on XML formats. By defining the testbed data as XMLs, users can easily read the files and change the data structure.

Real-world information including subjective opinions and judgments need imprecise data to be modeled for representation and querying in databases. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) has become a de-facto standard for data modeling and exchange in recent years. Efforts on modeling imprecision and representing such data in XML have not been fully developed. In this paper, an XML based fuzzy data representation and querying system is presented. Complex and imprecise data are represented using a fuzzy extension of XML. The representation forms the basis for a system which enables fuzzy querying on XML documents using XQuery, a XML query language. The system also enables restructuring of XML Schemas through merging of elements of the XML documents. By using this feature of the system, application specific XML Schema and XML documents can be generated from the existing documents.

We explored the subtree matching problem of probabilistic XML documents: finding the matches of an XML query tree over a probabilistic XML document, using the canonical tree edit distance as a similarity measure between subtrees. Probabilistic XML is a probability distribution model capturing uncertainty of both value and structure. Query over probabilistic XML documents is difficult: an naivie algorithm has exponential complexity by directly compute the tree edit distance between the query tree and each certain XML tree represented by the probabilistic XML document. Based on the method of tree edit distance computation over certain XML subtrees, we defined a minimum-solution to the edit distance computation, which means the minimum cost to translate the query tree to the probabilistic XML tree. Furthermore, we developed an algorithm---ASM (Algorithm of Subtree Matching) to compute the minimum solution. Finally, we proved the complexity of ASM is linear in the size of the probabilistic XML document.
