The mantra of service development and customer orientation on the one hand and a commitment to effectiveness and efficiency in managing all business workflows on the other hand have become commonplace. It forces information institutions to remain up-to-date concerning the latest developments. What does this mean for a manageable technical college library or a typical library of a technical university of applied sciences on an everyday pragmatic level? How can an understaffed department library sell itself as showcase, representative space or even boutique to its target groups (stakeholders, users as well as employees) to remain en vogue or simply remain relevant and attractive for them. On the campus of the Brandenburgische Hochschulbibliothek that is located nearby Berlin, efforts are being put into not only taking account of the appealing charm and graceful ambience of the portico of the loading facility, a listed building that the library moved into in 2007, but also establishing the library as a leading innovation hub for the whole campus and library network where ideas and visions become reality. This includes both technical solutions (regarding subjects such as RFID, visualization, automation and software), as well as formats for events and advanced training. However, what is needed to constantly implement new products – developed in-house or bought – and identify oneself with the profile of energetic and creative avant-garde? This contribution will attempt to illuminate the environment that naturally facilitates and promotes innovation efforts. The descriptive approach chosen here shall illustrate how a corporate culture that places greater value on the unforeseeable and new than on familiar routines can be implemented into public service in order to transform the latter into an institution that takes risks and enables innovations and new outcomes. This contribution is a plea for an open system, a praise for changes and innovations without falling prey to random transformations. It is thus ultimately a call for the staff of information institutions to take to heart the advertising slogan of the UAS Münster: Feel free to play (Bei uns dürfen Sie spielen).Le mantra du développement du service et de l’orientation à la clientèle, ainsi que l’obligation d’efficacité de la marche ordinaire des affaires est devenu un lieu commun.

The manuscripts British Library, Sloane MS 2593, Bodleian Library, MS Eng. poet. e.1, and St John’s College, Cambridge, MS S.54 are compact collections of song lyrics written during the fifteenth century, largely without notation. My thesis seeks to develop responsive ways of reading these anthologies and uses the manuscripts to illumine the creative processes that produced and circulated their songs. I integrate attention to song lyrics within the material books and exploration of wider textual networks. As many of the anthologies’ texts are in carol form, a combination of refrain parts and stanzas, the books provide an opportunity to examine the form’s identity and significance within fifteenth-century English songwriting. The thesis is in three parts and the first introduces critical approaches to the manuscripts and the carol, followed by an examination of the books and their contexts, especially manuscripts with which the anthologies have textual connections. The central section investigates the songs’ production and circulation by examining textual networks, how the anthologies were written, how the songs may have been performed, and the role of memory in shaping the songs and anthologies. The final part explores women’s role in the songs, the range of forms used, and the centrality of the many imagined voices and performances within the texts. This is the first extended study focused upon these three sources, which as anthologies offer insight into ways songs were shared and organised. I investigate the role of short collections and booklets in the construction of longer anthologies, and the possibility of an especially productive song culture within fifteenth-century East Anglia. Rather than repeating assertions familiar from earlier studies of carols that the anthologies’ songs are either popular or clerical productions, I suggest how the anthologies engage with communal performance cultures and participate in varied song traditions, from liturgy to lullaby.

Poggius Florentinus delighted in his local identity but he also, famously, had an international career, being in attendance at the Council of Constance, being resident in England for four years (1419-1422) and seeking employment at the imperial court. What is less recognized is how he sought for his literary works audiences far beyond his home-city and how some non-Italians were willingly collaborators in this creation of an international reputation. It has not been noticed before how a remarkable witness to this process is now housed in the Special Collections of Bryn Mawr. It, like other manuscripts in the library, reached its present location because of that twenty-century friend of Poggio and alumna of the college, Phyllis Goodhart Gordan. It now has the shelfmark ms. 48 and is a collection of Poggio’s dialogues. What has not been recognized is that we can identify both its scribe and its illuminator and, by doing so, shed new light on Poggio’s fortuna on the far side of Europe, in his one-time home of England.

Abstract Throughout the first decade of the nineteenth century, Ethan Allen Greenwood, a rather pedantic young diarist, each day recorded both the weather and the title of the book he was reading. He sometimes observed that a particular work was “instructive” or “entertaining” and occasionally noted the library from which the volume was borrowed—the Adelphi Fraternity Library, the Social Friends Library, or the unnamed circulating library he joined in 1806. His meticulous account of his activities and expenses—whether living at home in Worcester County, Massachusetts, or at Dartmouth College or later in Boston, or whether traveling around the countryside as an itinerant painter—provides posterity with an unusually comprehensive portrait of “Ethan Allen Greenwood, His Life and Times.” Looking over the record that he left, we can well imagine that we know this serious and sober, parsimonious and abstemious young man Franklinesquely working his way toward fame and fortune.

Streszczenie:
For centuries, people have been used to printed materials. The emergence of the Internet brings dramatic changes to millions of people in terms of how they collect, organize, disseminate, access, and use information. Researchers (Chowdhury & Chowdhury, 2003; Lesk, 2005; Witten & Bainbridge, 2003) have identified the following factors that contributed to the birth of digital libraries: 1. Vannevar Bush’s pioneering concept and idea of Memex. Vannevar Bush (1945) wrote a classic article, “As We May Think,” which has had a major impact on the emergence of digital libraries. In the article, he described his Memex device, which was able to organize books, journals, and notes in different places by linked association. This associative linking was similar to what is known today as hypertext. 2. The advancement in computer and communication/network technology. The computer was first used to manage information. In the 1960s, the emergence of remote online information search services changed the way people access and search information. By the 1980s, people could remotely and locally access library catalogues via Online Public Access Catalogues (OPACs). The invention of the CD-ROM made it easy and cheap for users to access electronic information. Most importantly, Web technology started in 1990, and the occurrence of Web browsers afterwards have enabled users to access digital information anywhere as long as there is an Internet connection. Web search engines offer an opportunity for millions of people to search full-text documents on the Web. 3. The development of libraries and library access. Since the creation of Alexandrian library around 300 B.C., the size and number of libraries have grown phenomenally. A library catalogue goes from a card catalogue to three generations of online public access catalogues started in the 1980s. Library materials include mainly printed resources to multimedia collections, such as images, videos, sound files, and so forth. Simultaneously, the information explosion in the digital age makes it impossible for libraries to collect all of the available materials.

In academic libraries, the area of data librarianship has introduced several new functions and skills into the librarian toolbox. These include statistical and software support, research data management, data curation, and data and statistical literacy. Fostering data-related collaborations enables librarians to enhance library services, collections, and outreach. In this chapter, we will focus on academic library collaborations with government agencies as case in point. Under the umbrella of open access, local and national governments have started making available the raw data that they collect, in the course of providing public services, for users to conduct their own analysis. This chapter will 1) describe data librarianship in academic libraries; 2) review open government data repositories; 3) outline concerns with open government data, such as metadata and data literacy; and 4) describe collaborative efforts between an academic library and New York City government agencies to address concerns with open government data.

The FA tools that we have developed are available in the “Digilib” digital library hosted on the server https://digilib.fri.uniza.sk/ equipped with an SSL certificate. Digilib allows for the creation and storing of FA tools (forms) such as the self-assessment card, prediction card, or Frayer model, which can be assigned to students thus providing both them and teachers with real-time feedback. Currently, 8 primary schools, 16 teachers, and 46 classes (grades 5 to 9) with a total of 846 students are registered in the digital library. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to collect teachers’ and students’ opinions on the digital library. The analysis of their answers showed numerous advantages for both teachers and students, e.g., easy and simple interface, quick feedback about students’ current state of knowledge, automated creation of complex overviews of students’ answers and their archiving. The feedback supplied helps students develop objective self-assessment, fill in the gaps, and modify their misconceptions in learning

Boyle's early life is described as we visit the Robert Boyle Science Room in the Lismore Heritage Centre, Boyle Family Memorials in Youghal and Dublin, and the Long Room in the Trinity College Library in Dublin. Staying in Ireland, we follow the section on Boyle with one on Erwin Schrödinger – they are bookends in our travels with the atom adventure. An overview of Schrödinger's contributions to the development of the atom is interweaved with an account of his escape from Nazi Germany, his appointment as the first professor of theoretical physics at the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies, and his role in inspiring biophysicists and chemists to unravel the secrets of DNA. His totally unorthodox lifestyle is noted. His workplace, residence and the striking “What is Life?” statue in the National Botanic Gardens are described.

We discuss the careers of seven pneumatists and early atomists and visit pertinent sites including the Royal Society in London, Newton's Woolsthorpe Manor in Grantham and his statue in the Trinity College Chapel in Cambridge, the Leeds Library and Mill Hill Chapel in Leeds, the Bowood House in Calne, and the Priestley House in the United States. Along the way, we discuss Robert Boyle's role as a chymist and chrysopoet (gold-maker), Isaac Newton's role as a devoted alchemist and atomist, the role of Ben Franklin in introducing Joseph Priestley to the sciences, Priestley's amazing career as a philosopher, preacher, educator, and scientist, the origin of the strange phlogiston-related names of these airs, and the early life of Humphry Davy as he demonstrated the intoxicating effects of “laughing gas” to his poet friends in Bristol. Although a concrete atomic theory had not yet been proposed, these pneumatic chemists accumulated the data that John Dalton would use to formulate his theory at the beginning of the nineteenth century.

Dynamic Algorithm Configuration (DAC) aims to dynamically control a target algorithm's hyperparameters in order to improve its performance. Several theoretical and empirical results have demonstrated the benefits of dynamically controlling hyperparameters in domains like evolutionary computation, AI Planning or deep learning. Replicating these results, as well as studying new methods for DAC, however, is difficult since existing benchmarks are often specialized and incompatible with the same interfaces. To facilitate benchmarking and thus research on DAC, we propose DACBench, a benchmark library that seeks to collect and standardize existing DAC benchmarks from different AI domains, as well as provide a template for new ones. For the design of DACBench, we focused on important desiderata, such as (i) flexibility, (ii) reproducibility, (iii) extensibility and (iv) automatic documentation and visualization. To show the potential, broad applicability and challenges of DAC, we explore how a set of six initial benchmarks compare in several dimensions of difficulty.

Abstract This paper describes our initial efforts to deploy a digital library to support engineering design and manufacturing. This experimental testbed, The Engineering Design Repository, is an effort to collect and archive public domain engineering data for use by researchers and engineering professionals. CAD knowledge-bases are vital to engineers, who search through vast amounts of corporate legacy data and navigate online catalogs to retrieve precisely the right components for assembly into new products. This research attempts to begin addressing the critical need for improved computational methods for reasoning about complex geometric and engineering information. In particular, we focus on archival and reuse of design and manufacturing data for mechatronic systems. This paper presents a description of the research problem and an overview of the initial architecture of testbed.

The vast majority of TikTok analysis done to date has used small, manually-collected datasets. This leaves open the questions of how to do large-scale analysis of phenomena on TikTok and what can be learned about unfolding current events. In this paper, we seek to better understand how such events present themselves on TikTok by conducting a first examination of large-scale user and content dynamics around the invasion of Ukraine in 2022. As this is among the first studies to conduct large-scale (i.e., involving millions of data points) data collection and analysis of TikTok data, our contributions also include insights into best (and less-than-great) practices for such critical research tasks. Furthermore, we have open-sourced our Ukraine-invasion dataset and provide a software library that can be used to collect TikTok data.

The amount of sales in a store is a strong indicator that contributes to managers' decision making. In physical retail, unlike e-commerce, it is more difficult to collect sales and customer behavior metrics because it depends on great sensing and integration between systems. In a shopping mall scenario, we use real WiFi data, People Flow and Sales create a dataset. In this article we propose an evaluation of machine learning models with the objective of estimating the next hour sales in Low, Medium and High, thus providing a tool to assist in decision making. We use the PyCaret library to perform the training of the 13 compared algorithms. The F1-score metric was used to evaluate the models. The Gradient Booster Classifier was the model that got the best result with a score of 84.75%. Among the estimated classes, the High class showed the greatest error in the confusion matrix, reaching 60%, possibly a reflection of the low amount of records in the high class.

Abstract In this paper, we describe recent experimental results from an ongoing design knowledge capture and reuse project. In the past several years, an increasing amount of the design work in the ME210 design course at Stanford, in which teams work for 30 weeks on industrially-sponsored real-world projects, has been captured in electronic format. This design information consists of design notes, drawings, reports, slide presentations, emails, vendor references, and even, in some cases, summaries of phone conversations, meeting minutes, and the like. The large corpus of captured information from the period of 1994 to 1996 was made available to the teams working on projects during the 1996–1997 academic year. A variety of filing and indexing schemes were used to organize the past data and help the teams sift through it. Because the data was all made available over a web server, we were able to collect information on access to it. We have thus had a chance to learn from studying the usage of a large body of captured design knowledge. Results from our analysis suggest that there were significant under-utilization of design work of others: there was only 8% access to past works, vs. 92% to the current year’s; and, there was only 15% access to design project-specific information, vs. 85% on logistic resources information. Important lessons have guided our efforts to improve the effectiveness of that usage based on what we’ve learned. These lessons include: • Informal design information is more useful to a broader audience when it is contextualized. We have put in place a capture system that makes it possible for students to add context to any information that’s been captured, and also specific reward structure, encouraging engineers to store, contextualize, and reuse captured design information. Preliminary observations suggest that this is worth the investment for a project as a whole. • It is important to accommodate a heterogeneous computing environment, both for capture and reuse; to support multiple methods for finding information; and to provide a uniform, well-behaved way of displaying archived documents. • In explaining our observations of varying levels of success in design capture systems, we have identified some patterns of enquiry and retrieval usage that are analogous to the patterns seen in library usage. Thus we identify library science as a valuable source of knowledge that until now has been under used by the design community.

Streszczenie:
The aim of this paper is to consider some possible directions for the future development of our library cum remote storage facility at University College Cork (UCC) in Ireland and the impact of digital knowledge products on such a future. It is an exercise in crystal ball gazing. The paper attempts to explore an emerging intellectual landscape, one no longer bound by the implications of the physical storage of printed knowledge and it considers what the long term implications might be. It does this by seeking to frame questions about the unknown, about answers as yet to emerge out of what is known through past experience gained in a print technology culture. It questions possible futures for print collections. It questions what are the implications for the future storage of knowledge if we abandon print technology as a storage medium. The paper is in three parts beginning with a stage setting exercise which profiles what currently exists and which gestures towards a vision of what might be. This is followed by a questioning of the challenges and pathways which implementing change might imply. The paper concludes with some reflections. Its core theme is the possibilities remote storage could offer in the transition from print based to digital libraries. For the purposes of this paper the word digital is loosely defined to mean existence in electronic form and either created in that form or imaged from printed media. Knowledge is defined as information to which some form of intellectual modeling has been applied such as the added value of scholarship or wisdom. By print preservation, I mean preserving book collections not simply because they may carry texts which are not reproduced elsewhere in electronic from. But, because the libraries created from these collections, store and transmit knowledge to us in their own distinctive way and this is something which I believe should be preserved.

Streszczenie:
Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are a multi-potential cell type that can be induced to differentiate to a variety of tissue-specific cell phenotypes, including cartilage (chondrogenesis) and bone (osteogenesis). Given this multi-potentiality, MSCs are a promising cell source for exploring developmental paradigms and for tissue engineering (TE) applications. For cartilage formation assays, MSCs are collected in high-density pellets and treated with specific biofactors, including TGF-β superfamily members and dexamethasone in a chemically defined medium (CM) [1]. During chondrogenesis, extracellular matrix (ECM) rich in glycosaminoglycan (GAG) and type II collagen is synthesized. While MSC chondrogenesis is well-characterized using existing protocols, the effect of alternative biofactors, their doses and combinations requires laborious combinatorial studies [2]. High-throughput screening (HTS) overcomes this limitation through the simultaneous layout and query of a large number of conditions within a single plate. HTS depends on the use of precise robotic liquid handling systems and on the development of sensitive, validated, and readily quantifiable assays. In a recent study, we optimized cell culture and assay procedures for HTS by minimizing cell number, handling and culture duration [3]. We successfully reduced the time scale from 21 to 7 days and the number of cells required from 225K to 30K cells per pellet. Further, we developed a novel in-well digestion protocol to enable high-throughput analysis and minimize handling. In this study, we have further streamlined these assays for HTS by providing a rapid and robotic approach for layout, culture, and analysis of ECM deposition using ‘micro’ MSC pellets (10K cells per pellet) in a 384-well format. Furthermore, we have carried out an initial screen of the NINDS small molecule library and demonstrated the feasibility of this technology for use in HTS of chondrogenesis.

Streszczenie:
Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs) collect a sampling of points on measured features for use in dimensional metrology. Conformance to specified geometric tolerances is done by analyzing the point cloud to fit the corresponding feature to the point cloud to determine if the simulated feature lies within the specified tolerance limits. Different types of feature fitting algorithms are needed: nominal, minimal/maximal, circumscribing/inscribing, and zone. Studies have shown that the same point cloud data sent to different vendors CMM software, produces different results. It is suspected that some of these algorithms may be inconsistent with the tolerance class definitions in tolerance standards and, in some cases, with shop floor conventional practices. We have previously reported on the development of normative algorithms and a feature fitting library that could be used by all CMMs. This paper gives a summary of those algorithms and then reports on methods used for verification. Three different types of verification methods were used to validate the algorithms developed. The scope of the current work is limited to linear, planar, circular, and cylindrical features. This set of algorithms described conforms to the international Standards for GD&T. In order to reduce the number of points to be analyzed, and to identify the possible candidate points for linear, circular and planar features, 2D and 3D convex hulls are used. For minimum, maximum, and Chebyshev cylinders, geometric search algorithms are used. Algorithms are divided into three major categories: least square, unconstrained, and constrained fits. Primary datums require one sided unconstrained fits for their verification. Secondary datums require one sided constrained fits for their verification. For size and other tolerance verifications, we require both unconstrained and constrained fits. Use of three different methods has validated the robustness, efficiency and accuracy of the algorithms.
