Streszczenie:
I am a Christian. In my opinion, this is the most important way I can describe myself as a person. As a son, brother, friend, employee, and student my Faith undeniably affects every facet of my life. In an effort to make my last year as a student resonate on a personal level, I have combined my spiritual journey with my academic one. My intent was to characterize my Christian faith in order to introduce an architecture that embodies the duality of a personal connection to God and a community experience based on fellowship. My ten-week investigation of my beliefs, the Christian church, and architectural precedents has pointed me towards designing a remote worship destination in an effort to explore the intersection that occurs between the spiritual and earthly realms and between the individual and society. My hope is that this design will embody my concept of the Christian faith as a process, or journey, and the nature of that process causing a spiritual separation from society. My intention is to symbolically represent a journey, a point of rest and introspection, and to capture the nature of worship with an architecture and how that architecture responds to a site. My process thus far has been incredibly introspective and educational on so much more than an academic plane. My early research was fueled by cynicism and frustration with how I have seen the Christian faith and church represented in America today. However, diving deeper into the spirituality of Christian worship I have gained a beautiful perspective on our relationship with God and each other. I can only hope that my solution will reflect the spiritual growth I have experienced. If you want to make God laugh, tell Him your plans. Folk Proverb

Streszczenie:

The purpose of this project was to explore what makes worship meaningful to people and to determine if postmodern worship could be incorporated into a traditional Baptist church’s worship in a way that would be meaningful to adults of all ages. For the purpose of the project, we defined postmodern worship as worship that is multisensory, experiential, enhanced with art, video or other imagery, is more participatory in nature, less clergy centric and word driven. In order to measure if postmodern worship was more meaningful, we ran a mixed methods research project at First Baptist Church in Columbia, MO; the research included the collection of both quantitative (surveys) and qualitative (interviews) data.

We designed a series of six worship services, which included elements enhanced with a postmodern style. After three of those worship services, we conducted surveys with the worship participants. We had them rank each element of the worship service based on how meaningful it was and we asked them a series of open-ended questions about the worship service. In addition, we conducted in-depth interviews with members of the congregation to determine what made worship meaningful to them and to further explore their experience of the postmodern elements in the worship services. After analyzing the data, our research revealed that the postmodern elements of worship were indeed more meaningful to members of the congregation.

During the project, we were not attempting to radically alter worship at First Baptist. Instead, we focused on worship innovation, renewing our worship by adding a more postmodern style to what we were already doing. This approach proved very successful. The congregation responded with enthusiasm and since the conclusion of the project, we have continued to utilize a more post postmodern style in worship.

Streszczenie:

Westerhoff (2000) reminds Christian congregations that children become members of the Christian Church from the moment they are baptized. Therefore, infants and young children should be present during congregational corporate worship services. It is through mentoring and modeling of the Christian faith that young children have optimal opportunity to grow in their relationship with God.

The goal of this qualitative case study was to look at what happens during corporate worship from the perspective of young children. Data were gathered from thirteen worship participants (ages five-nine) from two Lutheran congregations in order to determine the elements of corporate worship that help them encounter God.

The findings reveal that intergenerational corporate worship provides an opportunity for the mentoring/modeling dynamic that is central to Westerhoff's (2000) theory. The participants in this study report having meaningful encounters with God during church through various elements. Future research should replicate this inquiry in Christian congregations of other denominations.

Streszczenie:
This research was undertaken in the light of Foucault's theories and methodologies of language with particular reference to Discipline and Punish as applied to education. The opening section gives a detailed review of these methodologies and the way they will be applied to the various areas of educational practice. There is detailed consideration of the relationship between church and state from the early nineteenth century up until the Education Act, 1944, with particular reference to religious and educational discourse. This is followed by a study of the principles underlying the teaching of religion and the practice of worship in schools prior to 1944. From this the thesis moves to a closer consideration of the 1944 Education Act with the examination of the debate in parliament and in the country as a whole. Most of the evidence for the period is taken from The Times as reflecting the wider use of religious and educational discourse. The thesis then considers the outcome of the 1944 Education Act and the effects it had on religious education until the passage of the 1988 act, with particular reference to the changes in teacher praxis in the nineteen-sixties. Parallel to this is a survey of the main theological developments in Britain between 1944 and 1988 and an assessment of the changes within religious institutions during the same period. Before coming to a detailed consideration of the 1988 Education Reform Act, the thesis considers the changes that took place in teacher praxis between the nineteen-sixties and 1988, and then considers the debate in parliament and in the country during 1988. The final sections are concerned with the implementation of the act, with consideration of the governmental documentation issued to supplement the act and various comments upon these. Fieldwork within Hastings and Sutton has yielded data which attempts to place the research within the context of present praxis in a range of schools. The study concludes with media reaction to the act and an overview of the key points that have arisen from the research.

Streszczenie:
Rania, a young introverted woman, lives in a traditional Muslim family. It is a working class family, of Indian and Cape Malay heritage. Her parents married each other against her paternal grandmother's plans for her son, and because of their disapproval of Rania's mother, it caused a rift isolating both Rania and her mother from them. Rania feels stuck in an environment where she doesn't fit in and feels that she doesn't belong. Feeling like this, she escapes into a dream world of books and art to survive her overbearing mother, Shazia, who is both emotionally repressed and verbally abusive toward her. Her father, Ismail (Miley) Ahmed, fuels the drama with his obsessive control which Rania questions, yet obeys. Shazia, heartbroken from a previous love lost, pretends not to be interested in the silliness of love, and feigns disinterest in her husband's suspected extramarital affairs, yet does everything she can to hold onto him. Until he humiliates her beyond her capacity to forgive and she throws him out, but still secretly holds onto a hope that he will want to come back to her. Amara is Shazia's daughter from her previous husband, Rania's stepsister, and Shazia's favourite. Shazia has great plans for her, but she is a strong and free spirited young woman, and rebels against her doting mother by following her own bliss. She chooses happiness over security, even if it means defying her mother's wishes and breaking her mother's heart. Rania, obedient and lonely, yearns to meet someone she can connect to, someone who can save her from the world she believes her parents are keeping her trapped in, but she may be the one blocking herself. It is a coming of age story where three women struggle to find happiness amid difficult circumstances. The events which unfold, change their lives forever.

Streszczenie:
Singing is an integral part of Christian worship. Recent developments in the practice of western Christian worship over the last half-century have led to a surge in prominence of the role and of those individuals who lead the singing; yet their characteristics, and that of their role, have been relatively under-researched. This study reviews the multiplicity of current Australian Christian worship settings and studies the collective voice of those who participate in the role in order to understand the construct, culture, environment and vocal task of the Contemporary Worship Singer. The research is designed around an in-depth review of the literature followed by the ethnography techniques; survey and interviews. The first phase (survey) harvested 85 responses from across Australia via an online questionnaire. The data was analysed and emerging questions were developed for phase two (interviews). Subsequently, nine participants from five churches responded to a semi-structured interview and follow-up. The research design purposefully engaged the average voice of the Contemporary Worship Singer by randomly selecting the participants for both survey and interview. The voice of the data cohort is triangulated against the literature review and the voice of the researcher in order to cultivate qualitative analysis and subsequent conclusions. The overall research project reveals that the role and the vocal task of the Contemporary Worship Singer lacks general understanding by key stakeholders: church music directors, professional singing teachers and the Contemporary Worship Singers themselves. Consequently, individual singers are confronted by a confused state of parameters as they attempt to engage in the role and the vocal task. Cultural considerations such as performance orientation and theological concerns including the ‘anointing’ require greater levels of instruction. Accompanying these requirements is the need for Contemporary Worship Singers to receive vocal instruction in accordance with their worship setting. Commonly, conservative worship settings will require a classically informed vocal discipline and progressive worship settings necessitate contemporary voice instruction. The study draws conclusions from the four structural pillars of enquiry (construct, culture, environment and voice) and delivers nineteen distinctive features that distinguish the Contemporary Worship Singer as a unique vocalist in the wider community of singers. The implications of the study find their climax in the ‘Contemporary Worship Singer Assessment Tool’. The practical implications of the Contemporary Worship Singer Assessment Tool empower key stakeholders (especially singing teachers) to correctly identify the individual singer’s worship setting and correctly nominate the most appropriate vocal discipline. The study highlights the Contemporary Worship Singer as an active, vibrant and highly populated demographic in the wider community of singers.
