This article reports the results of a content analysis of the debut season of the reality television show, The Apprentice. All 15 episodes were examined to determine the role that communication competencies played in competitors’ success or elimination. Results indicate that the ability to persuade effectively was most critical to winning tasks, but leadership skills and interpersonal skills were the most common sources of praise and criticism from teammates and Donald Trump and his associates. Women appeared to be judged more critically for their interpersonal skills than men, whereas evaluations of men focused primarily on their leadership abilities.

Communication is critical to the success of any firm. Communication, Is an indivisible, essential, and ongoing action, much like the circulatory system in the human body. As a consequence, communication effectiveness becomes an important factor in assessing a group's overall effectiveness. The survival of an organisation is dependent on a number of elements, include command unity, authority and responsibilities allocation, collaboration, and management, all of which need effective interpersonal communications. As a consequence, interpersonal communication has become a company's lifeblood. The importance of interpersonal communication for organizations is explained in this paper. The aspects of social communication include communicators, content, sound, response, background, and channel. Interpersonal communications skills are beneficial in a variety of situations, including romantic relationships, counseling, marketing, management, and conflict resolution. The capacity to communicate with others via efficient listening and conversation is known as interpersonal competence. Interpersonal skills are crucial for students since they allow them to adapt with others and boost their own growth. In general, kids develop interpersonal skills through their professors and peers at school. However, some students still lack interpersonal skills for a variety of reasons, the most common of which is their introverted personality. Sentiment, filtering, a text crammed with information, dismissiveness, cultural variations, and argot are all barriers to effective interpersonal communications that might be overcome by reducing language, regulating feelings, listening closely, and using feedback. This study will aid in the development of strategies to enhance the interpersonal skills in various organizations.

Guided by emotional response theory (ERT) and Mehrabian’s theory of nonverbal behavior, the current study examined links between supervisor nonverbal immediacy (NI), employee emotion experience, and employee motives for communicating with a supervisor. Analyses of data collected from 608 participants indicated that supervisor NI significantly predicts subordinates’ emotional experience, including emotion work and perceived emotional support. Subordinates are motivated to attain relationally oriented needs from their supervisor, rather than personal influence needs, through their satisfactory emotion experiences in the workplace. Theoretical contributions and suggestions for future research are discussed.

In the redesign of a professional communication course for real estate students, a workplace simulation was implemented, spanning the entire 12-week duration of the course. The simulation was achieved through the creation of an online company presence, the infusion of communication typically encountered in the workplace, and an intensive and integrated approach to task design. An analysis of students’ and tutors’ perceptions of the changes shows higher student engagement, with the redesigned course resulting in learning that is both relevant and meaningful to workplace communication, which has implications for the teaching and learning of professional communication skills in higher education.

Good communication is required to build and maintain mutual relationship in project teams. This is because effective communication can enable a work team to achieve their goals. This stems from the fact that when the employees understand the management expectations and target goals, they will be able to do their work task based on the required standard. Also, effective communication is critical to the success of team work because the ability to work together without issues is determined by conveying the right information at the right. However, despite the crucial role played by effective communication in a productive work environment, it was found that Matrix Coating Resource Sdn Bhd (MCR) often experience communication issues among the workforce and this result to workplace conflict and employee relationship issues. It was on this note that this consultancy project critically examined the communications and employee relationships practices of MCR in order to determine key areas required to improve project tasks completion. A sample of 50 respondents were chosen from the workforce using both interview and questionnaire instruments. The study found that the staff of Matrix often experience communication issues and this leads to disagreements and misunderstanding among the workforce. This is because proper communication using appropriate channel can help to ease both the number and severity of workplace conflicts. Driven by this, it was proposed that the management of Matrix should do well to employ people with solid communication skills because this will allow them to work together cohesively and professionally, address the issue through training exercises and behaviour modeling. It should conduct constant training programmes especially for the new staff so as to improve their ability to communicate clearly and concisely with colleagues and work team members, include communication skills in the appraisal of employees’ performance and tie the organization’s objectives into performance appraisal so as to achieve the goals of the company and develop team building exercises to strengthen intra-office relationship. This is because high performance teams often become more cohesive overtime as they gain experiences working and communicating with other teams in the workplace. Therefore, exciting activities such as informal networking groups, team exercises and others so as to enable the staff to work together in a cohesive way. The team building process will allow the team members to learn the best ways to work together through team experience without issues.

Many corporate leaders believe that the physical environment of the workplace can play a major role in fostering the interdisciplinary collaboration they link to organizational innovation and in creating a brand that attracts and keeps highly talented employees. Their belief aligns with a recent materialist turn in scholarship that addresses the mutual creation of objects and subjects. Taking advantage of ubiquitous communications technology, the open plan design of these new workplaces offers a variety of settings, created more through furnishings than architecture, to support the four modes of 21st-century work: collaborate, socialize, learn, and focus. In this flexible, “mobile” workplace, people and things mutually reconfigure themselves as projects and preferences change. A tension exists, however, between group-oriented communication conducted face-to-face and private, individual thinking. Exploring the fit between the rhetoric of what space can do, especially enhancing collaboration and achieving innovation, and results on the ground, is an inviting, largely untapped, area for business communication research.

Working environment communication is fundamental to cooperation. In addition to the fact that it builds and looks after connections, work environment communication encourages development. However, the barriers in communication can be a hindrance to information being communicated successfully. This study aims to study the communication issues that are faced by Malaysian employees in the workplace. A questionnaire was developed and distributed to Malaysian workers that comprised of various departments in Malaysia. The questionnaire comprises of questions on the communication problems in the context of the workplace in terms of the language barrier and physical environment. The participants that had contributed to this study were as much as 41 respondents. The respondents involved had assessed the survey based on their personal experiences in their respective organizations. Based on the results of the study, it can be seen on how the language barrier and physical environment of the workplace affect the employees’ conditions. The findings of this study can help employers view these challenges more seriously and consider the possible solutions to the problems that have been discussed. This paper is concluded by providing future researchers recommendations on various communication problems in the workplace to be further investigated and analysed in a more comprehensive manner.

In today’s increasingly intercultural workplace setting, an individual’s ability to function effectively in culturally diverse situations is paramount for the success of the organisation. The main purpose of this study is to examine and understand the intercultural communication between Australian hospital workers (nurse managers, nurses and Patient Care Assistants and volunteers) through the theoretical lens of Cultural Intelligence (CQ). A mixed method approach was employed to collect data from multiple sources including the use of questionnaires and interviews. Items for the questionnaires and interviews were drawn from the literature on cultural intelligence. The questionnaire included 20 Likert scale items which were developed by the Centre for Cultural Intelligence based in the United States and Singapore. In addition there were six Likert scale items developed by the researcher on intercultural experiences to gauge satisfaction levels in interactions. Another seven Likert scale items were drawn from the Ali Individualism Scale to understand how culture type influenced CQ and intercultural interactions. The interview included six open-ended questions related to cultural intelligence, English language proficiency and a critical incident scenario. The interviews were used to provide detail on the cultural intelligence questionnaire statements. A Western Australian private hospital was selected for the study where 400 questionnaires were distributed. Out of these 157 returned questionnaires, 15 voluntary interviewees were chosen based on their job roles and culture type to be interviewed. The study found that overall the hospital workers had a high level of cultural intelligence. There were two cultural intelligence factors that were low: Cognitive CQ, involving knowledge of other cultures, and Behavioural CQ, involving the ability to provide the appropriate cultural response during intercultural interactions. The study found that those with higher levels of CQ enjoyed meeting people of different cultures and had more satisfactory relationships. Those with lower levels of CQ seemed to have more challenging intercultural interactions. This thesis concluded by recommending that the hospital provide intercultural awareness training to all staff and some form of technical training relating to introduction of common terms used in a hospital setting for employees who have lower levels of English proficiency. It was also recommended that the hospital include CQ as part of their Human Resources systems, such as recruitment, appraisals and competency assessments.

Streszczenie:

Workplace flexibility is becoming more and more common in American workplaces. However, most of these policies are created for professional and white-collar workers. Scholars have argued that the “missing middle,” that is, workers who are neither in the professional class nor low-wage workers, are often ignored in formal policies. Scholars have argued that workers experience a stigma for using these policies; however, little is known about how this stigmatization process occurs. This dissertation employs a grounded theory methodology to analyze 29 semi-structured interviews with missing middle workers to understand how they communicatively construct workplace flexibility and its attending stigma. Analysis of the data suggested the missing middle constructed workplace flexibility by drawing upon macro, meso, and micro-level D/discourses. In doing so, my participants communicated a fine line between use and abuse of workplace flexibility policies based on a) the perception of a worker as lazy, b) the perception of a worker using flexibility too frequently, and c) the perception of a worker having a non-acceptable rationale for using flexibility. Thus, workers become stigmatized for being perceived to abuse, not use, the policies. Based on the data, I offer a ground theory of this flexibility stigmatization process, that includes: a) organizational norms surrounding flexibility, b) the use of workplace flexibility, c) talk surrounding flexibility, and d) stigma perceptions. I then offer potential ways this communicative process can be reconstituted and transformed by human resource personnel, managers, and workers to disrupt the cycle of workplace flexibility stigma.

The purpose of this study was to identify if employer interpersonal communication and support are factors that reduce breastfeeding duration. An online, 85-item questionnaire was completed by employed breastfeeding mothers in the state of North Dakota. Of the 502 respondents, responses of a subset of 214 mothers who had concluded breastfeeding were analyzed. Shorter breastfeeding duration was seen in mothers who reported not being confident in combining breastfeeding and working. This was further seen in shorter breastfeeding duration among mothers who did not feel comfortable asking for accommodations or taking breastfeeding breaks. Mothers who were unsure about manager?s support of breastfeeding had shorter breastfeeding duration. Many respondents stated that their employer did not provide instrumental support. Over half of the respondents (60%) were unsure or disagreed/strongly disagreed that written policies concerning breastfeeding or pumping were present. Further research is needed to determine additional workplace barriers that reduce breastfeeding duration.

Streszczenie:
As mobile communication becomes more pervasive, there is an increasing need to study the potential uses of wireless organizational communication. The difficulty in analyzing information and communication technology (ICT) in organizational communication is the unintentional split between information processes perspectives and human communication perspectives in the discussions of workplace technology. By merging two constructs, organizational informatics and organizational sensemaking, this paper develops a communicative organizational informatics (COI) framework, which provides a robust perspective on how people communicate through the uses of technology in organizational settings. This communicative informatics framework offers a powerful lens to study the meanings, understandings, uses and gratifications, and potentials of technology in organizations and how it can facilitate workplace communication. A COI analysis of a personal digital assistant (PDA), a Palm VII, with a live wireless connection to a company sales database is examined by applying a usability testing methodology.

"In 2012, the Faculty of Industrial Engineering Technology of Leuven University, Campus Diepenbeek, initiated a student-driven action research project to optimize the communications curriculum and tether it to trends and evolutions in the engineering workplace. The methodological pivot of the action research cycle is a questionnaire that students send out to professional engineers on a yearly basis. To date, the questionnaire has been completed by over 2000 engineers. The survey polls the importance and salient features of contemporaneous communication practices for engineers, on the basis of which the curriculum is continuously refined and optimized to match workplace expectations. The existence of this historical dataset allowed for an accurate measurement of the impact of COVID-19 on communication practices in the field of engineering. The perhaps unsurprising, but nevertheless striking rise in online meeting and collaboration practices in the engineering workplace prompts urgent curricular questions with potentially far-reaching ramifications, as the communications curriculum rests, as yet, on a bedrock of traditional, face-to-face interaction. With urgent 21th century concerns surrounding mobility and climate change, screen-to-screen interactions might well evolve into the “new normal” for business communication. This presentation discusses the findings of the questionnaire on the impact of COVID-19 on engineering communication practices and follows through with a preliminary exploration of the ramifications of these findings on the future communications curriculum for engineers."

Streszczenie:
This exploratory study set out to evaluate how well a particular course in automotive engineering is set up to enable students to develop skills necessary to enter the workplace. The research set out to identify trends in student expectations and in the needs of employers at a time when this field of work is characterised by disruptive technological developments such as computerisation and automation. The intended outcome of the research is that the findings will assist the critical thinking of course designers as they reflect on modifications that might be necessary for Unitec Bachelor of Applied Technology (BAT) graduate attributes to fully meet future workplace demands. It is also an aim that this exploratory evaluation of a small cohort of students can, despite its limitations, identify trends for future pedagogical research in the ITP (Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics) sector. Although not a full course evaluation, this study invited feedback from students and recent graduates in relevant employment regarding the alignment of the Unitec Bachelor of Applied Technology (BAT) course design with their perceptions of skills necessary in the workplace. Another intention was to highlight any misalignments between the realities of the automotive engineering sector and student expectations of the course: To what degree are work capability expectations in agreement between the student stakeholders and the institution? Are the course goals realistic and in line with actual industry needs? How is the definition of work readiness changing? The paper also samples current speculative thinking about skills that are becoming progressively more important in the workplace, namely the so-called ‘soft skills’ in communication, problem solving, management and collaboration, and in dialogic and creative attributes relevant to increasingly automated and globalised workplaces.

Expanding workplace HIV/AIDS prevention activities for a highly mobile population: Construction workers in Ho Chi Minh City. Population Council, 2003. http://dx.doi.org/10.31899/hiv2003.1013.

Streszczenie:
In Ho Chi Minh City, the locus of the HIV epidemic in Vietnam, efforts have been under way for several years to implement prevention efforts for migrant worker populations. The main activity has been volunteer health communicators (HCs) visiting workplaces and conducting HIV education activities. These efforts have reached only a small number of the intended audience, and the impact is unclear. Local authorities want to scale up their efforts but need information on the most effective and least costly activities, and their potential for scale up. The Horizons Program, the Population Council/Vietnam, and partners compared two programs for highly mobile construction workers: the existing HC workplace program, where social work students deliver HIV-prevention education, and a new peer-education program. Concerns exist about the turnover of health communicators in the HC program and whether social work students, about half of whom are female, are the most effective HIV-prevention educators for a largely male construction worker population. The new program uses construction worker peer educators to promote HIV risk reduction. Findings noted in this report indicate that the peer-educator program reached a higher proportion of workers than the health-communicator program.
