Streszczenie:
Integration and efforts to include women journalists are increasing as a result of advocating for a more inclusive media, including in sports desk. However sports journalist broadcasters are limited, as seen from the way women athletes are covered at various levels, the representation of athletes who get the spotlight as well as the focus on sports industry issues that get coverage priority. This literature review uses the scoping literature review method - a literature discussion on women sports journalists - and Bourdieu's framework to understand sports journalism as doxa and its influence on women journalists and other women workers in sports journalism. Experiences and decision making of women journalists were analyzed with the perspective of Gender Psychology based on previous researches from Journalism, Communication, Sports and Media Studies. The literature analysis resulted in a mapping of the various issues faced by women sports journalists, as well as describing the dynamics and identity negotiations that were experienced. The existence of women sports journalists influences the way sports desk works, the issues and focus of their work, their writing styles, and their strategies in the workplace and sports media as institutions. Women sports journalists create a space to work through their daily lives.

A journalist is a person who involves in activities such as writing/ reporting for newspapers, magazines or on news websites in order to be published/ broadcasted. The journalists have social responsibility i.e. objective reporting. Media is the "Fourth Estate" and journalists are the watchdogs of society. In order to carry out the healthy practice of journalism the journalists need to be free and the circumstances need to be safe. Journalist safety is the most important aspect of press freedom. The other question that arises time and again is about the representation of women in Media. Even the concept of gender inequality might have changed over the course of time and the representation of women is still minimal. Women have not gained parity with men in terms of participation and decision making.

GamerGate is a viral campaign that became an occasion, particularly from August 2014 to January 2015, to both question journalistic ethics and badger women involved in game development and gaming criticism. Gaming journalists thus found themselves managing a debate on two fronts: defending the probity of gaming journalism and remediating attacks on women. This study explores how gaming journalists undertook paradigm maintenance in the midst of the controversy. This was analyzed through interviews with gaming journalists as well as a discourse analysis of the texts responding to GamerGate that were produced by their publications. Although gaming journalists operate within a form of lifestyle journalism, the journalists repaired their paradigm by linking their work to traditional journalism and emphasizing a paternal role.

Violence in its various forms (be it physical, verbal, or structural) is enacted by political figures against women journalists across the globe. This study focuses on the violence experienced by women journalists reporting on politics in Brazil and South Africa. The paper examines the question: How are elements of violence enacted against women journalists by political actors in South Africa similar to those in Brazil? The study samples eight pieces of visual data in which the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and President Jair Bolsonaro verbally and physically assault women journalists. The research explores the individual and intersecting tenets of gender-based violence in both contexts. Videos from Brazil and South Africa were sourced from YouTube and Twitter and analysed using thematic analysis. The two main themes the paper explores are: strategic gender-based violence and the avoidance of accountability, and the intersections of power, patriarchy, and physicality. The research concludes that the political figures are aware of the woman journalist’s position in society and use strategic forms of violence to wield their power to both undermine and silence the journalists. Their strategy requires a violence toolkit that consists of the structural and patriarchal gender-based violence embedded in both contexts. The politicians want to avoid accountability for their actions as well as ensure that the woman journalist understands the risk and violence they face if they continue to probe and question them. The paper recommends that further studies should research the strategies that are used to address the gendered violence experienced by women journalists.

Streszczenie:
Since the 2010s, a new type of journalism has emerged, especially in North America and Western Europe, called constructive journalism. Its basic idea is to complement classic problem-centered reporting by covering problem-solving approaches that could inspire the recipients. It has been harshly criticized, especially for its alleged proximity to advocacy or activism. To clarify the role orientations of the protagonists of this trend, a survey of all German journalists that call themselves constructive or solution-oriented was conducted (n = 79). The results show that constructive journalists are as diverse in age as the total of all journalists in Germany, but tend to be more women journalists, freelancers, formally higher educated, and politically leaning toward green and left-wing positions. Regarding role orientations, the field of constructive journalism not only represents a new facet of the entire journalistic field but also consists of several nuanced approaches itself: In factor analysis, we found eight role dimensions, of which the most important were the Social Integrator, the Transformation Agent, the Active Watchdog, the Emotional Storyteller, and the Innovation Reporter. In comparison to the average German journalist, the German constructive journalist shows stronger ambitions to control political and business elites, to motivate people to participate, and to contribute to social change. This can be explained as a countermovement not only to a possible negativity bias in the news but also to an increased attitude of detachment in German newsrooms.

In 2014, President Barack Obama made history by only calling upon women journalists during a domestic news conference with the White House press corps. To capitalize on and examine this critical first in journalism, this study analyzed the potential influence of a journalist’s gender in White House press corps news conferences with President Obama a year before and a year after the all-female conference. The content analysis examined what political issues journalists emphasized in presidential news conferences and whether these issue emphases varied (a) by journalists’ gender and (b) before and after the all-female conference. Results revealed that, to some extent, men and women emphasized different issues. Furthermore, there were marked shifts after the all-female conference. First, women were called upon more often. Second, women emphasized several issues more than men. In particular, women became predominant on questions dealing with so-called ‘masculine’ or ‘hard news’ issues, for example, macroeconomics and foreign trade. This work suggests that gender, in all of its permutations – be it the journalist’s gender, the gendering of issues, or the gendering of occupational spaces – matters and may affect journalists’ lines of questioning.

Women are underrepresented in many areas of journalistic newsrooms. In this paper, we examine if this established effect persists in the new forms of journalistic communication, namely social media networks. We use mentions, retweets, and hashtags as measures of journalistic amplification and legitimation. Furthermore, we compare two groups of journalists in different stages of development: political and data journalists in Germany in 2021. Our results show that journalists identified as women tend to favor other women journalists in mentions and retweets on Twitter (now called X), compared to men. While both professions are dominated by men, with a high share of tweets authored by men, women mention and retweet other women more than their male colleagues. Female data journalists also leverage different sources than men. In addition, we found data journalists to be more inclusive of non-member sources in their networks compared to political journalists.

In feminist media studies, the growing body of research on media production has indicated that journalism remains divided along gender lines. The purpose of this study is to address the lack of relevant multi-method research on gender inequality in journalism. To assess the structural position of women in the journalistic workforce, the authors conducted a large-scale survey of journalists in Belgium. The survey results were explored in more depth by conducting qualitative interviews with 19 female journalists. The analysis confirms the existence of all traditional barriers that women journalists experience. The added value of this study is that it enumerates several additional difficulties, and offers insight into the strategies that the respondents use to deal with gender-related career obstacles. These strategies were associated with the degree of flexibility in the newsroom for journalists with children, the choice to work part-time or freelance, and the use of new communication technologies.

This artide deals with women journalists in Swedish daily newspapers from the late eighteen hundreds to the 1950s, when professional education started in Sweden and brought women into the mainstream of the business. In our project about those early women reporters, myself (Margareta Stål), Birgitta Ney and Kristina Lundgren have had three purposes; first to give a contribution to the history of Swedish journalism and make a feminist revision of that history; secondly to show how the emerging process of professionalization at the modern editorial offices with its concomitant gender segregation of assignments also offered opportunities to transform journalism; and thirdly to show, through textual analysis, how women could achieve a career within the male dominated journalistic profession. The project focuses five women reporters: Lotten Ekman from the turn of the century, Ester Blenda Nordström from the early decades, and Barbro Alving, Maud Adlercreutz and Astrid Ljungström from the 1930s to the 50s. By focusing those individual journalists we also describe and produce a body of knowledge about other contemporary women journalists. We especially analyse connections between the texts and the concept of modernity. The project shows how this connection is dynamic and transformative - modernity is a prerequisite of the journalistic texts, at the same time as it is articulated, from within its particular conditions, in the texts.

Violence against women is considered a global issue and it denies women their most basic human right, their health. The news media have been identified as an important factor in how violence against women is interpreted and perceived by society. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate how journalists and editors in Guyana, South America, work with the coverage of violence against women. Furthermore, this thesis examines what policies and views on news value that are prominent on the newspapers and what possibilities journalists and editors experience, to make an impact on society, through their reporting. Eight qualitative in-depth interviews were carried out with editors and reporters on the three most widely spread daily newspapers in Guyana. Also a quantitative content analysis, covering January-April 2014, was performed on the same newspapers. In total 159 articles that reported on cases of violence against women were found and coded. The result indicates that the reporting in Guyana conforms to previous research. The conclusion is that when it comes to context, language and sources used, the newspapers generally fail to work with violence against women adequately. The reporting preserves and reproduces patriarchal power structures by using victim blaming or perpetrator excusing language, not covering it as a social issue and overusing official sources. Furthermore, the result indicates that there are unwritten policies on the newspapers. However, these guidelines are not always followed. The study indicates that the reporting is not given enough resources in terms of time and money, which might be a result of that reporters and editors do not experience that readers are interested enough for the topic to get sufficient resources.

This study introduced six African-American female journalists in Indiana and provided an intimate account of their perception of media in regards to African-American female journalists of the 21st century. The women were publicly analyzed with a series of questions and candidly discussed the role of Black female journalists at work, in their personal lives, and their communities in general. The women shared similar responses in regards to four main topics: diversity in media, gender-related challenges, career enjoyment and impact on their communities. The most pressing issue of concern was diversity. All of the women agreed that diversity is ineffectively addressed and provided suggestions. The two research questions concluded (1) none of the women credited any female pioneer in Black journalism to their success and (2) the women did not credit early Black female journalists toward their decision to obtain longevity in journalism.

The Hindu island of Bali is a patriarchal society and the Balinese people’s everyday tasks are woven together with their many cultural and religious rituals and actions. Bali is one of the most famous and most visited islands of the wide spread island nation of Indonesia. Here, the concept of cultural tourism is established – a concept which regards the rich Balinese culture as a tourist draw, something that motivates the Balinese people to safeguard their regional identity and culture. These strives although tends to collide with the strives towards a more gender equal society. This study investigates the role of the Balinese female journalist – both within the newsrooms and in the society in general. It is based mainly upon in-depth interviews with women journalists in Bali. The theoretical framework orbits around a gendered approach to the theory of Journalism Culture, which combines concepts such as doxa and social fields to explain the dynamic and dichotomizations within the professional field. Masculine domination theories are also used. The results of this study reveal a complex situation where the female journalists perform a challenging balance act in order to perform their very best both at work, at home and in the society.

AbstractThis final chapter brings together the various threads in the book. It builds on empowerment theories already discussed and intertwines them with concepts of trauma, emotional labour, emotions and affect, and affective proximity by examining humanitarian radio journalism broadcast among internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Burkina Faso and the provision of practical responses to their information needs. It considers how women journalists at a radio studio cover the plight of women IDPs in Burkina Faso and the strategies they have used for the IDP women to gain a voice but also be listened to, all the while supported by a Western development media (radio) organisation and its funders. It first discusses the problems faced by women examined in previous chapters but now in extreme situations. It then examines how women journalists, by being both women and journalists, navigate social structures to gain access to and responses from the IDP women, and it finally investigates the approaches taken by a media development NGO radio studio to best communicate with their IDP listeners but also advocate on their behalf.

Streszczenie:
Over the last forty years feminist historians have commented on the under-representation or marginalisation of women thinkers and makers in design, craft, and material culture. (Kirkham and Attfield, 1989; Attfield, 2000; Howard, 2000: Buckley, 1986; Buckley, 2020:). In response particular strategies have been developed to write women back into history. These methods expand the sites, objects and voices engaged in thinking about making and the space of the everyday world. The problem, however, is even more acute in Australia where we lack secondary histories of many design disciplines. With the notable exception of Julie Willis and Bronwyn Hanna (2001) or Burns and Edquist (1988) we have very few overview histories. This paper will examine women’s contribution to design thinking and making in Australia as a form of cultural history. It will explore the methods and challenges in developing a chronological and thematic history of women’s design making practice and design thinking in Australia from 1870 – 1920 where the subjects are not only designers but also journalists, novelists, exhibiters, and correspondents. We are interested in using media (exhibitions and print culture) as a prism: to examine how and where women spoke to design and making, what topics they addressed, and the ideas they formed to articulate the nexus between women, making and place.

Health is a most common topic discussed in women magazine ranking from fashion to beauty, sexuality to art and culture. Biological health, mental health, fertility and sexual health are the most common topics which are given wide coverage. Whether this news, having quantitatively audience, is qualitatively health news is the primarily problem. The most of the news deals with particular subject such as medical selling, aesthetic advertisement and prototypes imposed on popular life. A large number of news reaching the audience read for health purposes cannot go beyond triggering the consumption culture. That is the starting point of this study. The study limited to 52 issues of Cosmopolitan Turkey published between June 2014- September 2018 analyses Dr. Cosmo, which falls into the health news category. In this study, content analysis is used to examine to what extent the news qualitatively and quantitatively contributes to medicine journalism. At the end of the study, it is found that the most of the health news is published on the purposes of commercial concerns, consolidates aesthetic perception and generally stuck between certain topics.

Nadezhda Lukhmanova (1841–1907) was a novelist, playwright, publicist, lecturer. Today her name is almost forgotten, but at the turn of the 19th–20th centuries she was well-known throughout Russia: her artistic and dramatic works were widely in demand, she gave lectures in the capital and abroad, worked as a journalist in the leading St. Petersburg newspapers. At the age of 62, she took part in the Russian-Japanese war as a nurse of the Red Cross and war correspondent (Peterburgskaia gazeta, Yuzhniy Krai). During her stay in the war and later in Japan, Lukhmanova wrote not only travel notes and articles for newspapers, but also short plays, stories based on real events (Shaman, Black stripe, Tree in the Palace of Chizakuin, Li-Tun-Chi), stylization of Chinese and Japanese fairy tales (The Only Language Clear for a Woman, Human Soul, Typhoon, Golden Fox). The writer raised a variety of topics: the place and role of women in the war, the organization of hospitals, unjustified victims of war and the problem of moral choice, as well as ethnographic sketches devoted to the traditions and mode of life of Manchuria and Japan. And if its early records resemble ethnographic sketches, filled with wariness towards the local population and a lack of understanding of Chinese customs, then later, in fairy tales and diary sketches, the sense of guilt before the Chinese people for the bloody slaughter taking place on their land becomes more clearly apparent. The works of the writer were undeservedly forgotten for more than a hundred years and are just beginning their return to literary memory.

Streszczenie:
The article, based on the material of a wide body of texts, shows the key aspects of the image of the Smolensk region in K. Simonov's work. For the first time, in addition to literary texts and diaries, military journalism and a screenplay are used to identify ideological and thematic unity in the author's work. The image of the Smolensk region was formed by Simonov during the Great Patriotic War and includes stable, repeatedly repeated motives and situations in various works. Smolensk region appears as a chronotope, a capacitor of historical continuity. This idea is most directly embodied in the appeal to the name “Old Smolenskaya Road” and in the landscape connecting the villages and the cemetery, the present and the past. Images of women blessing warriors, an old man and an old woman in a hut acquire a symbolic reading - they almost personify the idea of the Motherland, its merciful forgiving love and the duty and responsibility of a male defender. It is important that these paintings were originally associated with the Mogilev region, but due to the strong position of the title and the direct movement of memories, they are identified as Smolensk. The idea of Smolensk and especially Vyazma as the key to Moscow is also significant for Simonov. The loss of these cities is especially acutely felt by the author himself and his heroes, it becomes a sign of the almost accomplished catastrophe of the first months of the war. The writer almost does not depict the partisan movement in the Smolensk region. The images of the Smolensk region returned, but devastated to the ground, became creatively significant. Triumphal pathos is alien to the image of the conquered land, a sense of tragedy prevails. Recreating the image of the Smolensk region, Simonov is far from topographical descriptive or culturological research, the image is colored by personal experiences: for the writer and his heroes, the Smolensk region becomes the embodiment of the idea of the Motherland, of its deep, primordial features.

Streszczenie:
There is ample evidence that online hate speech in Pakistan is directed against women, religious minorities, journalists, voices of dissent and activists. The targeting of many of these groups is an expansion online of the traditional hostility and abuse they face offline. However, the internet has made such abuse easier and online hate speech is growing as internet use rises in the country. Those responsible vary somewhat: women and religious minorities are typically targeted by religio-political parties and their followers, while journalists and activists are often targeted by government/the military. In all cases, online hate speech can have a serious offline impact, including physical violence, and restrictions on people’s freedom/ability to work/post online. This review, looking at online hate speech in Pakistan in relation to particular groups, draws largely on reports by think-tanks/NGOs as well as media articles and blogs. Relatively little academic literature was found on the subject, but grey literature was quite extensive, especially on certain religious minorities (Ahmadis) and women.

This guidebook seeks to provide communicators with the practical tools and recommendations to do a better job, particularly in their dealings with reporters on issues from crisis management, violence against women, to reporting on crime statistics, among others. The aim is help build trust among all actors involved. Having the police communicate in a more professional way with the media (and its broader audiences through social media) is helpful not only to the police but to journalists, too, who can then report relevant news more accurately and fairly.

Bury Me My Love is a game about distance. The eponymous phrase, ‘Bury Me My Love,’ is an Arabic expression to take care roughly meant to signify, “don’t think about dying before I do.” The game is inspired by but does not tell, the real-life story of Dana, a Syrian woman having left her country in September 2015.
