Hidayah Tani Farmers Group is a farmer's institution in Jember, East Java. The potential for large cayenne pepper productivity is around 523 tons, but most members of the Farmers Group still prioritize farming with rice-rice-palawija and rice-rice-tobacco cropping patterns. Meanwhile, cayenne pepper as a local potential has not become a priority because of the lack of technical knowledge about cayenne pepper cultivation. This group has several needs in terms of assistance and economic empowerment through farmer group institutions. Through group-based institutions, farmers can get counseling and assistance related to the cultivation of cayenne pepper in an integrated manner by utilizing their yards. Service activities are carried out through socialization of service programs, providing integrated cayenne pepper cultivation assistance, conducting counseling related to institutional strengthening of farmer groups, and monitoring and evaluation. Farmers' responses to the implementation of the mentoring program showed that the participants' perception of the cayenne pepper cultivation technique was good, and the women agreed that there would be a Women Farmers Group formed.

AbstractThe relationship between men and women is dominated by men. Likewise in village society, in all spaces women become the second class. This paper describes group activities to resist the concept that has been perpetuated as a concrete manifestation of the ideology of feminism. This activity is carried out by the Women Farmers Group (KWT Karya Tani), which is located in Pengalusan Village, Mrebet District, Purbalingga Regency, Central Java. The study approach uses qualitative (ethnography) because it is more to do a more comprehensive study. KWT Karya Tani's agricultural products are several types of organic vegetables. Some of them are processed into sambal kucai, gethuk and peuyeum. From the results of group production and management, KWT won 1st place at the national level from the Ministry of Agriculture, which previously won 1st place in Purbalingga Regency in the yard competition. As subordinated subjects, women in this group can create a solid integration. In addition, they are located in Christian groups, while most of the village society are Muslim. There is a stigma that tends to show social boundaries on the basis of religion. This can further strengthen solidarity and social integration. Finally, at this point, KWT Karya Tani has resisted and deconstructed the power of patriarchy and majority.

Abstract This study investigates the role of women in sustainable agriculture practices adoption. This study employed correctional data from 150 farmers in East Java Indonesia, and it was analysed by an ordered probit model. The farmers have used five sustainable practices, including organic fertilizer, bio-pesticide, crop rotation, and agroforestry adoption. The main finding indicated that woman’s participation in agricultural practices significantly improved both organic fertilizer and bio-pesticide adoption, however, it does not significantly affect agroforestry adoption. this is confirmed that women are more likely to be aware of agricultural sustainability. On the other hand, we also find that the farmer’s cultivated are, land status and participation in farmer group significantly affected farmers’ decision to adopt sustainable agriculture practices. Therefore, we suggested that the role of women in agricultural activity should be improved. The government can improve woman’s intention to participate in agricultural sectors.

Aim: This research aims to assess the perceptions of women farmers regarding Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs), with a specific focus on women-based FPOs in Namakkal District, Tamil Nadu. The primary objective is to contribute to the development of more effective and sustainable FPO models, which can support smallholder farmers in improving their livelihoods and achieving food security. Research Gap: The research aims to fill a critical gap in existing literature by focusing exclusively on women farmers' perspectives on FPOs, thereby providing insights into the effectiveness of FPOs in empowering women in agriculture. Study Location: Namakkal District, Tamil Nadu, was chosen due to its high concentration of FPOs under the Central Sector Plan for 10,000 new FPOs. FPO Selection: Four women-based FPOs were purposively selected from 17 in the region, focusing on FPOs with exclusively female members to explore women farmers' experiences. Sample Size and Data Collection: Structured questionnaires were used to collect data from 30 members in each of the four selected women-based FPOs, totaling 120 participants. Data Analysis: Factor analysis was applied to the dataset comprising 22 variables related to women farmers' views of Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs). Results: Study identified eight critical factors that significantly shape women farmers' perceptions of FPOs. These factors include the business ecosystem, value addition services, marketing services, production services, bargaining power, social capital, advisory services, and prosperity benefits. Together, these factors explain 68.356% of the variance in the data, offering valuable insights into what influences women farmers' views on FPOs. Conclusion: Joining an FPO offers equal opportunities, collective procurement, and knowledge exchange for all farmers, empowering women with training and resources for active participation in agriculture. FPOs boost prosperity, elevate societal status, and provide valuable support to women farmers, enhancing their livelihoods.

The Selakaso Women Farmers Group is a forum that provides opportunities for women to participate in advancing the agricultural sector. The Women Farmers Group has three roles, namely as a vehicle for learning, a vehicle for cooperation and production which is implemented by KWT Selakaso in counseling activities, gymnastics and production units. This study aims to determine the impact of farmers' time allocation in the activities of the Selakaso Women's Farmer Group on farmers' income. This study uses an explanatory method and a quantitative approach. Based on the results of the analysis that has been carried out in this study, it was found that the income of farmers from KWT Selakaso was significantly influenced by the time allocation of farmers in extension activities and the allocation of farmers' time in production activities. But it is not significantly affected by the time allocation in gymnastics or collaboration activities. So it is necessary to increase the time allocation by establishing partnerships between farmer groups and outside parties.

Even though there is an increasing trend towards the ‘feminisation of agriculture’, especially among the small and resource-poor farm households due to the increasing long-term migration of men, women’s work on the family farm is invisibilised to a very large extent in most parts of the country. One of the reasons for the absence of gender issues in the literature on agriculture is that women are not even regarded as farmers due to the absence of property rights for them. This paper is based on fieldwork conducted in villages of Punjab, Rajasthan and Telangana. It brings to light lesser-known facts about women’s ownership of land and their changing status in rural India. Based on data collected through primary research from 100 households in each of the three states, this paper concentrates on the less researched aspects of women in agriculture in India. The study focuses on women’s role as farmers, their control over land, their participation in agricultural activities on family farms, and decision-making, including decisions relating to the family. The analysis of data shows that there are regional differences in these aspects, which are mainly due to the differences in cultural factors relating to women’s status in society.

Empowering women in the context of agricultural sustainability is an important and relevant issue. However, there are challenges and obstacles that need to be addressed in efforts to empower women farmers. Therefore, an in-depth analysis of the roles, challenges, and potentials of coconut farmer's wives in women's empowerment is necessary. The aim of this research is to evaluate the roles of coconut farmer's wives based on their potentials and the challenges they face, with the goal of supporting the sustainability of coconut farming. A Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT) framework combined with an Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) framework is used to analyze the perceptions of experts regarding the roles of coconut farmer's wives in the research location. The research findings indicate that the most prominent threat to the role of women farmers is the frequent changes in agricultural policies that can affect prices and the lack of training programs for women coconut farmers. Meanwhile, the prominent weaknesses affecting the role of women coconut farmers in the research location are the frequent limitations in accessing productive resources such as capital, land, technology, and training. The results obtained from this research can provide knowledge and understanding to various stakeholders regarding the most crucial issues to consider in formulating policies to enhance the role of women farmers

The study discusses adaptation practices and the resilience of smallholder farmers to agriculture productivity. The study sampled 248 women smallholder farmers in the study communities. Purposive sampling techniques were used to gather data from women smallholder farmers. The findings indicate that drought, pest and disease infestation, reduced rainfall, and flooding were climate change occurrences that affect crop yields as farmers record low productive output. The findings also indicate that mixed cropping, mixed farming, integrated soil fertility management and forecasting were adaptation practices. Findings further show that livelihood diversification, climate-smart agriculture (CSA), dry season gardening and improved variety were also the major resilience strategies among women smallholder farmers. The study recommends that the Ministry of Food and Agriculture should prioritize a dry season gardening support scheme for women smallholder farmers to sustain their adaptative capacity to climate change; the Nabdam District Assembly should create an enabling environment for women smallholder farmers to effectively maximum livelihood diversification; and International Non- Governmental Organization (INGO) including Action Aid Ghana (AAG) should scale-up support to women smallholder farmers in their intervention programs focusing on dry season gardening. Firstly, by changing conventional agricultural cultivation behavior into organic cultivation. Secondly, by establishing a Participatory Guarantee System for organic that can increase the autonomy of women farmers both in terms of cultivation and involvement in the agricultural chain system. Both empowerment processes can be carried out for women farmers despite they have low educational background, limited land, multiple roles in the household, or in older ages. In addition, patience, the nature of togetherness, and the desire to learn are the keys to the success of organic farming businesses in women farmers group.

This study aims to determine the average exchange rate of soybean farmers and determine the factors that affect the exchange rate of soybean farmers in Grobogan Regency. The basic method used in this research is analytical descriptive. The research location was chosen purposively, namely in Pulokulon District, Grobogan Regency. The type of data used in this study is primary data from 50 respondent farmers. Analysis of the data used is multiple linear regression. The results showed that the Farmer's Exchange Rate (NTP) was 115% which indicated that the farmers were in a prosperous condition. All variables studied together have a significant effect on the exchange rate of soybean farmers in Grobogan Regency. The results of the t-test analysis showed that other farm income variables, farmer household food expenditures, non-farm income and non-food expenditures of farmers' households had a significant effect on the soybean farmer's exchange rate, while the variables of farmer age, education, number of farmer family members, and farm income individually does not significantly affect the exchange rate of farmers in Grobogan Regency. From the results of the t-test analysis, the function model of the exchange rate of soybean farmers in Grobogan Regency is Y = 59.418 + 0.381X1 – 2.319X2 + 7.276X3 + 1.077x10-5X4 + 4.498x10-6X5 –3.681 x10-6X6 - 3.656 x10-6X7 - 3,859x10-6X8. Based on the results of the study, suggestions that can be given are that it is necessary to provide counseling regarding increasing the productivity of other farming commodities and being able to maximize the use of the yard to plant vegetables and fruits for household consumption and to use fuel efficiently. Farmers can have a side job outside the agricultural sector such as being a laborer, trader, or other work so as to increase the household income of farmers. The government can provide assistance in the form of capital for farmers both to develop farming and other businesses with the hope that the income obtained by the community will increase so that the welfare of farmers will also increase. In relation to soybean farming, farmers should form partnerships with women farmer groups in selling soybeans.

In July 1954, the US military notified residents of Isahama, Ginowan, in the central part of Okinawa Island, of their evictions from their lands. Despite immediate opposition by residents, the military rejected all appeals on the grounds that this and other evictions were necessary to make the world safe for democracy. Though Isahama’s residents were discouraged by their failure to extract a more favorable outcome from military authorities, their struggle to keep their lands from being requisitioned—and similar struggles that erupted in Iejima, Furujima, and Mawashi—are widely recognized as the sparks that ignited the “all-island struggle” of 1956. This article considers the roles that Isahama’s women farmers played in inspiring the mass mobilization of 1956. While scholars have characterized the power of their protests as stemming precisely from their apolitical character—from their desperation as mothers and wives simply trying to protect their families from certain death—it proposes a reconsideration of this assessment. A Marxist feminist perspective that centers on the concept of social reproduction enables a linking of their struggle to a broader genealogy of political struggle in Okinawa and beyond to one that women and feminists waged against capital, militarism, and patriarchy.

Over 90 % of the farmers around Marsabit Mountain, a pocket of arable land amidst a predominantly arid area in northern Kenya, are former pastoralists, unfamiliar with productive and sustainable farming technologies. This paper describes how encouraging farmer innovativeness enhanced adoption and adaptation of water-saving technologies to suit individual farmers' needs. When farmers understood the principles behind a technology they were more likely to adapt it. Both men and women farmers were most interested in increasing their available income through improved technologies, but more women than men ranked labour saving as an important attribute of a new technology. More women adopted the new technologies, but men used them on a larger area than women. The paper also shows that agricultural productivity can substantially increase even if the theoretical full potential of the recommended practices might not be achieved. It is concluded that farmers need to be exposed to new ideas in exciting and thought provoking ways to tap their innovation potential.

The existence of women farmer groups in the use of land for agriculture, such as existing fruit and vegetables, deserves a response to the follow-up, considering that the activities of women farmer groups have great potential. However, the professions as farmers and agricultural laborers, the income of female farmers and agricultural laborers does not necessarily depend on the season. With the ability to manage further processed agricultural products, they can have reliable income and use a marketing system that is adjusted to the times. This research is a model trial with the title "Business Information Technology Models for Women Farmer Group in Indonesia" with the aim of minimizing disparities in the village. By utilizing knowledge, skills and technology, it is hoped that poverty and disparity can be minimized or even eliminated. This research at a macro level provides benefits to stakeholders, namely human resources who supply raw materials, female farmers who are metamorphosed into entrepreneurs, so that domestic and foreign consumers will get superior regional products with high quality.

AbstractMany states including California allow fruit and vegetable checks (FVCs) issued by the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Program to be redeemed at farmers’ markets. Despite the potential of the FVC program to increase the revenue of participating farmers and to provide fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables to WIC participants, analysis of data for California shows that redemptions of FVCs at farmers’ markets have to date been miniscule. We study the barriers to use of FVCs at farmers’ markets and consider strategies for expanding both farmer and WIC client participation in the farmers’ market program. Our methodology involved design, implementation and analysis of surveys of both farmers’ market managers and farmer vendors who participate in the program and analysis of the behavior of WIC participants through California WIC program redemption data. One major factor limiting redemptions in California is that relatively few farmers’ markets currently accept FVCs and both market managers and farmers report that the authorization process is onerous. WIC participants who shopped at authorized markets more fully utilized the fixed-dollar value of their voucher, compared with participants who shopped at other authorized WIC vendors. Nevertheless, participants who visited a farmers’ market are unlikely to return. The study concludes with suggested pathways to increase WIC participant utilization of farmers’ markets.

Abstract Many studies have emphasized the important role of women in the agriculture sector and rural development. However, many existing empirical studies have also shown various barrier faced by women especially due to the limited access and control of agricultural resources. This study aims to analyze the productivity and technical efficiency of female farmers in Indonesian rice industry. To this end, this study using stochastic production function analysis by employing national agricultural survey data in 2014. The empirical results finds that the productivity of female’s farmer in the Indonesian rice farming has been affected by the cultivated land, the use of fertilizer and seed, as well the type of mechanization which propose different marginal productivity for each factor. Meanwhile, the average technical efficiency level is found to be at 0.645 percent. Furthermore, the level of efficiency is explained by the role of the level of education and age of the female farmers, but no effect from the farmer group membership, and participation in the farmers training program.

In many East African countries, women and men have different levels of access to formal markets for agricultural inputs, including seed, reflecting a combination of gender norms and resource constraints. As a result, women and men may have different levels of participation in—and reliance upon—informal seed systems for sourcing preferred planting material and accessing new crop varieties over time. We use network analysis to explore differences in seed networks accessed by women and men for three major food security crops—beans, finger millet, and sorghum—in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. Drawing on data from an original survey of 1001 rural farm households across five study sites, we find that women, on average, have fewer connections to experts and farmers’ groups than men but are relatively better connected in farmer-to-farmer social networks across different farming systems. We further find women’s and men’s networks are clustered by gender (i.e., women’s networks include more women, and men’s networks include more men)—and that men’s networks are more likely to exchange improved seed. Women’s networks, though sometimes larger, are less likely to exchange improved varieties that might help farmers adapt to climate change. Women farmers across contexts may also be more reliant on farmer-to-farmer networks than men due to their relative isolation from other seed and information sources. Findings emphasize the need for careful attention to the different implications of seed policies, market interventions, and other seed system reforms to support gender-equitable food security options for women and men in sub-Saharan Africa.

There are cassava farmers in Pendawa 1 Farmer Group located in Candi Rejo Village, Sibiru-biru District, Deli Serdang Regency. The resulting cassava is usually processed by women into Opak crackers (chips from flour with cassava). In the process of making Opak, it will produce cassava peel waste. The farmers have never treated the cassava peel waste, besides that cow dung waste is also left piled up near the cow cage. The main factor that underlies the farmer's not to carry out waste treatment because they do not have a place or area to process the waste. Thus, this problem must be addressed immediately so that the farmer group can carry out circular agriculture in agriculture and animal husbandry. The purpose of this activity is to form or develop a group of farmers who are economically and socially independent, help create peace and comfort in community life and improve the skills of members of the Pendawa 1 Farmer Group in managing waste into compost. The result of this activity is to build a simple composting house with a special design measuring 6m x 4m as an area to process waste into compost.

Abstract:A considerable amount of research has been undertaken on the decline in women's agricultural employment during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, but very little has been written about the position of women farmers. During this period, women farmers remained more common throughout Wales than in England. This study explores the part played by women farmers in the agricultural community of Nantconwy, a hundred in the eastern part of Snowdonia, Caernarvonshire, where women comprised up to twenty-two per cent of farmers during the period 1750 to 1900. It examines how and why women became farmers, and the role they played in running the farm. Four factors are suggested to account for the high proportion of women farmers in Snowdonia: a system of virtually hereditary tenancies, the inheritance of farm stock, the traditional nature of Welsh farming, and women's desire to continue farming.

The study examined socio-economic factors influencing the choice of communication media for accessing agricultural information among gender categories, that is, men, women, and youths in Kilosa and Mvomero districts of Tanzania. Data were collected from a sample of 240 selected farmers. Information was collected using structured and semi-structured interviews, and document reviews. The collected data were analyzed through descriptive, inferential and qualitative approaches. A multinomial logit was estimated to identify socio-economic factors such as age of a farmer in farming, education level, types of assets owned, farmer’s marital status, income and nature of farming enterprise in influencing the choice of communication media for accessing agricultural information among men, women, and youths. Results showed that the choice of either television or video or mobile phones or Internet or leaflets or booklets over radio was not statistically gender based. In addition, the choice of leaflets and television by famers over radio in rural areas was influenced by their education level and income at 1% and 3% level of significance respectively. The increase of 1.5 years in schooling influences the farmer to choose leaflets than radio. Similarly, increase of income by 0.3% influences him/her to choose television rather than radio. The income enables the farmer to increase his/her television purchasing power and meet related operational costs by 2%. Generally, the study concludes that the choice between television, video, mobile phones, Internet, leaflets, or booklets over radio was not influenced by gender. However, farmers with low education and income levels did not choose leaflets and television, respectively. The study recommends that policy-makers should formulate appropriate strategies for motivating farmers with low level of education to read leaflets and mobilizing financial resource to enable the government’s intervention on subsidizing television to boost its usage by low-income farmers for timely access to agricultural information.

The study assessed rural farmers’ attitude to indigenous knowledge sharing for selected livelihood activities in South-South Nigeria. Multi-stage sampling was used to select 360 farmers. Data collection was through questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics such as mean and Analysis of variance (ANOVA). The result reveals that sharing between two or more farmers ( = 3.9), parents/guardian/friends ( = 3.8), participation ( = 3.8), observation ( = 3.7), farmer’s groups ( = 3.7), demonstration ( = 3.4), social group gathering ( = 3.4), village groups/age grades ( = 3.4), village meetings ( = 3.4), women meetings ( = 3.3) and apprenticeship ( = 3.0) were the major ways farmers share knowledge. Furthermore, cost intensive to undertake ( = 2.56), time consuming to undertake ( = 2.52), not valued by farmers ( = 2.07) and very labourious to undertake ( = 1.78) were some of the mean responses of farmers on their attitude to knowledge sharing. The ANOVA result showed no significant difference in the mean ratings of the respondents on their attitude to indigenous knowledge sharing for selected livelihood activities in South-South Nigeria at 5% level of significance. From the findings, it was concluded that farmers generally had unfavourable attitude towards indigenous knowledge sharing for selected livelihood activities. The study recommended that the State Ministries of Agriculture and Extension Agencies should assist the rural farmers by organizing demonstrations and coordinating farmer groups which would enable them share their indigenous knowledge for better livelihood activities in the study area.

Tomatoes are one of the most widely cultivated horticultural crops in the region Tuban Regency. One of the women farmer groups that often cultivate tomatoes is the Farmers Women’s Group in is the Farmers Women’s Group in Widang Subdistrict. The Farmers Women’s Group has tomato plants with high yields. But sometimes the price of tomatoes is very low causing the Farmers Women’s Group to experience significant losses. The author sees this condition as an opportunity to increase the use value of tomatoes so that they have a higher price. One of the efforts that can be done is by using tomatoes as raw material for making candied dried tomatoes. Candied dried tomatoes are a very popular food and have wide market opportunities. This has been proven by the high sales of candied dried tomatoes in several regions in Indonesia. The author sincerely hopes that this community service activity will be able to increase the income of the Farmers Women’s Group in Widang District. The Farmer Women's Group is able to make candied dried tomatoes into one of the foods and souvenirs that are in demand by tourists visiting the Tuban Regency area. Community service activities were carried out at the Agricultural Extension Center of Widang District, Tuban Regency, which was attended by around 15 farm women. This activity contains counseling related to the innovation of candied tomatoes, followed by planning and implementing activities to make sweets made from tomato fruit. Armed with knowledge and practice, participants from the Widang District Women Farmers Group were interested and planned to apply the idea and innovation of candied dried tomatoes during the next harvest season. AbstractThe level of access of women to production resources can be enhanced through their active membership and participation in farmers’ associations. However, most farmer-groups in Nigeria are male-dominated. The study therefore analysed women farmers’ participation in farmer-group activities in Kwara State. Specifically, the study identified the expectations of women from group membership; determined their level of participation; identified constraints to participation; and investigated the determinants of participation. A two-stage random sampling technique was used to select 142 women farmers on which a structured interview schedule was administered. Descriptive statistics, Likert scale, and Ordinary Least Square (OLS) Regression Analysis were used to analyse and present the data collected. The results revealed that the mean age, years of experience and farm size of the respondents were 46.9 years, 22 years and 3.2 acres, respectively. Access to farm credit (57 %), self-help (49.4 %), and farm input (31.1 %) were the most important expectations from membership. The level of women participation was low (mean = 2.87) and determined by age, years of experience and farm size at P < 0.05. Financial constraints, poor sense of belonging, inappropriate timing of activities and socio-cultural discrimination were the most severe challenges to participation. The study concluded that women participation in farmer-group activities was low, influenced by their socio-economic characteristics. Therefore, we strongly recommend a multi-dimensional approach to enhance women’s participation in group activities.

Streszczenie:
Printed pictures are traditional forms of agricultural extension for smallholder farmers. They receive historical academic criticism but remain inexpensive, do not require technical skills (unlike smartphones), and bypass language/literacy barriers. Here, a comprehensive participatory pipeline is described that included 56 Nepalese women farmer editors to develop 100 picture-based lessons. Thereafter, the Theory of Planned Behavior is used as a framework to evaluate 20 diverse lessons using quantitative and qualitative data (Nvivo-11) collected from four groups, focusing on low-literacy women: the women farmer editors (n = 56); smallholder field testers who had prior exposure to extension agents and the actual innovations (control group, n = 120), and those who did not (test group, n = 60); expert stakeholders (extension agents/scientists, n = 25). The expected comprehension difference between farmer groups was non-substantive, suggesting that the participatory editing/testing approaches were effective. There were surprising findings compared to the academic literature: smallholders comprehended the pictures without the help of extension agents, perhaps because of the participatory approaches used; children assisted their mothers to understand caption-based lessons; the farmers preferred printed pictures compared to advanced information and communication technologies (ICTs); and the resource-poor farmers were willing to pay for the printed materials, sufficient to make them cost-neutral/scalable. These findings have implications for smallholder farmers beyond Nepal.
