AbstractDuring Cnut’s two decades on the throne, his English court was the most vibrant centre in the North for the production and performance of skaldic praise poetry. Icelandic poets composing for earlier Anglo-Saxon kings had focused on the predictive power of royal ‘speaking’ names: for example, Æthelstan (‘Noble-Rock’) and Æthelred (‘Noble-Counsel’). The name Cnut presented problems, vulnerable as it was to cross-linguistic gaffes and embarrassing associations. This article reviews the difficulties faced by Cnut’s skalds when referring in verse to their patron and the solutions they devised. Similar techniques were used when naming other figures in the king’s vicinity. The article concludes with a look at two cruces in an anonymous praise poem celebrating Cnut’s victory in battle in 1016/17 against the English. Both onomastic allusions — to a famed local hero and a female onlooker — seem to poke fun at the ‘colonial’ pronunciation of Danish names in Anglo-Scandinavian England. Norse court poetry was nothing if not a combative game.

Streszczenie:
Interpretations of the trees in the Garden of Eden misunderstand their significance by focusing on sin or a theological “fall.” A tradition-historical approach to the motif of trees in ancient Near Eastern literature and imagery reveals their multivalent quality. Trees are connected with fertility and goddess devotion but also with the power and divine sanction given to kings and dynasties, and with the potency of sacred space, on which humans and the divine come together and meet. As cross-temporal motifs, trees are regularly associated with life-giving and blessing (a plant of rejuvenation; a tree of life); a connection of trees to knowledge and meaning appears as well, in wisdom literature, and in the book of 1 Enoch. Language of a world tree or cosmic tree, though useful conceptually, is a modern imposition on the ancient evidence. More evident from the ancient setting is the image of felling trees, which indicates the downfall of human leaders, especially kings, because of their hubris. Ultimately, sacred trees have an ambivalent value, as a source of both contestation and progress.

BRENNAN, BRIAN. "WEAVING WITH WORDS: VENANTIUS FORTUNATUS'S FIGURATIVE ACROSTICS ON THE HOLY CROSS". Traditio 74 (2019): 27–53. http://dx.doi.org/10.1017/tdo.2019.13.

Streszczenie:
Within the collected works of Venantius Fortunatus, the sixth-century Latin poet who wrote verse for kings, royal officials, bishops, and nuns in Frankish Gaul, there are found three acrostic poems. One, on the themes of captivity and release (5.6) is accompanied by a prose letter (5.6a) in which the poet discusses his methods in composing this work, which he intended for decorative display on a wall. The other two acrostics are written on the theme of the Holy Cross (2.4; 2.5). This paper, which offers a new interpretation of the figurative acrostics on the Holy Cross, begins first by examining the compositional strategies discussed by Fortunatus in 5.6a and his use there of the extended metaphor of weaving for the composition of acrostic poetry. The paper then moves to a wider discussion of weaving as a metaphor in Fortunatus's poetry before exploring how the poet played with metaphors and materiality, particularly in those instances when he was writing verse intended to be actually placed on material objects or sent with them. It finally goes on to argue, on the basis of indications within the acrostic poems on the Holy Cross themselves and much circumstantial evidence external to them, that these poems (2.4; 2.5) were written for public display in the chapel of the Holy Cross convent at Poitiers. It argues that these acrostics were most probably intended as textile designs for church vela or “hangings.”

During the 1401–1403 political crisis in the Kingdom of Hungary, the magnates who were hostile to the ruling King Sigismund of Luxemburg and supported instead the Angevin King Ladislas of Naples deployed a wide range of propaganda tools for proving the legitimacy of their political cause. In a previous study published in this journal (Vestnik of SPbSU. History, 2021, vol. 66, issue 1, рp. 179–192), I have focused on the Hungarian noblemen’s anti-royal propaganda through the utilizing of political and spiritual symbols (i. e., the Holy Crown of Hungary and the cult, relics, and visual representations of St. Ladislas), symbolic actions (coronations and oath-swearing on holy relics), and heraldic self-representation (the Árpádian double cross). The present study approaches the same topic of anti-royal propaganda in the troubled political context of the early 15th century, but from the perspective of the elites’ self-representation strategies via the cult of Hungarian royal saints, artistic patronage, and heraldic self-representation. The two leaders of the anti-royal movement, Archbishop of Esztergom John Kanizsai and Palatine of Hungary Detre Bebek, repeatedly commissioned works of art (i.e., seals, stained-glass windows, and wall paintings) which featured prominently the images of the three Holy Kings of Hungary (Sts Stephen, Emeric, and Ladislas) or displayed the realm’s coat of arms (the Árpádian two-barred cross). The reliance of John Kanizsai and Detre Bebek on the cults and images of the patron saints of the country blended harmoniously the commissioners’ personal piety with their political ambitions. In the context of the early-15th century political crisis, the appropriation of the ideal figures of the sancti reges Hungariae became the driving force behind the Hungarian noblemen’s political cause.

AbstractThroughout the Middle Ages, the Monastery of the Holy Cross in Jerusalem was a highly symbolic place to Georgians and to their kings. Although the monks were expropriated and their abbot was killed at the end of Sultan Baybars's reign, the Monastery preserved two documents that guaranteed its protection by Mamluk authorities, a court-authenticated testimony and a Sultan's missive. These documents, which were issued before the Monastery was turned into a Sufi convent by Šayh Hadir, shed new light on the complex relations of the Mamluk state with its Christian minorities. The radical change in the Mamluk's attitude towards the Monastery coincided with a rupture in political relations between the Mamluks and Georgian polities in the aftermath of the battle of 'Ayn Gālūt. The Sultan's missive that was addressed to one of his emirs is one of the oldest specimens of Mamluk chancellery. It proves that the Mamluk military ranking system did not yet exist under Sultan Baybars.

The portraits of Emperor Charles IV testify to his patrons activities, rul- ing ideology and private piety. The focus of the paper is the portraits of the Emperor created in the second half of the 14th century in his fortified imperial residence, Karlštejn near Prague. There are six portraits of the Emperor and one crypto por- trait in Karlštejn. Within the genealogy of the Luxembourg dynasty, the genealogy of the Přemyslid dynasty, in the scene of transfer of Passion relics in the Chapel of the Mother of God, with the Mother of God and Christ in the chapel of St. Catherine and above the portal of the chapel. Then, Charles IV is presented in the room where the steps leading to the Chapel of the Holy Cross are located, within the cycle of St. Wenceslaus. In the very chapel of the Holy Cross, in the scene of the Adoration of the Three Kings, in the image of the third, a crypto-portrait of the Emperor is recognized. Through these portraits, Charles IV built his ruling identity by presenting himself as the new Constantine, the new Charlemagne, but also the successor of St. Wenceslaus.

As the 12th century entered its midpoint, unease permeated through Christendom. In 1144, the County of Edessa had fallen to Zengi, the atabeg of Mosul and Aleppo, signalling that all was not well in the Holy Land. News of the fall of Edessa quickly travelled westward, with the Catholic Pope, Eugenius III, issuing a papal bull calling for a Second Crusade in December of the next yea r. Nevertheless, for the Edessa’s fellow Crusader states, the restlessness of being surrounded by the Islamic had turned to alarm. Help was gravely needed. Then came word of aid from an unlikely place: the East itself. Rumours had swirled of a Christian monarch in the East, but actual proof of his existence was scant, based mainly on fantastical tales of the Orient. That changed in December of 1145, with a conversation between Bishops Otto of Freising and Hugh of Jabala. Hugh told Otto of a Nestorian Christian priest-king “beyond Persia and Armenia”, who had “warred upon the so-called Samiards, the brother kings of the Medes and Persians.” More critically, Hugh reported that this priest-king had “moved his army to aid the church of Jerusalem” but was unable to cross the Tigris and returned home. Such was the legend of Prester John, the ruler of an eastern Christian kingdom that offered hope and little else to a Christian West that would steadily lose its grip on the Holy Land. Why did Prester John never come to the aid of the Crusader states? The story o f this priest- king, his supposed interactions with western Christendom and ultimate failure to deliver on his promises, reveals how the environmen t we inhabit and the methods we use to communicate shape our beliefs and values, and that as our environments and communication methods change, so do these beliefs and values.

Nepal maintained army strength even during the reigns of Lichchavi kings. Later, its operations began to generate income. The way in which King Prithvi Narayan Shah and his successors diligently mastered the art of warfare and strategy resulted in the success of the Gorkhali army. After the Kot Prava, the Rana family emerged and radically changed policies. This research studies on Nepali Army’s glorious history, transformation, and mainly its public relation. The Postmodern Military Model (PMMM) is the theoretical perspective that has guided this study. For this, a qualitative method that deals with subjectivity is adopted. Secondary data such as journals, books and standard websites are used to analyze the data. Nepali Army is not a threat to the society that it protects as it has been trying to build its trust and credibility among the public. During its Imperial Era, the Great Britain awarded several Grukha soldiers in its military the ‘Victoria Cross’ for their unparalleled bravery and courage in various battles. Nepali Army gets exposure to serve in the outside world for decades. Relation between civil and army has not been bad in Nepal for many centuries despite of having some rubbings in the modern Nepal. However, politicians, notably the sitting PM or Defense Minister, routinely try to invoke the Nepal Army and draw it into the political jurisdiction. Nepali Army has been doing its duties honestly and unfailingly both inside and outside Nepal.

Streszczenie:
Australian and international literature provides strong evidence that intravenous use of psychostimulants increases the harms experienced by users, including heightening the risk of blood-borne virus (BBV) infection. The few Australian studies that include women who inject psychostimulants identify street-based sex work as the main method of income generation and highlight the harms that result from combining these practices. However, there has been little exploration into the way these practices are shaped by the environments in which they occur or the ways in which women manage these harms. This thesis aims to provide an in-depth exploration of the daily lives of women who inject psychostimulants and engage in street-based sex work in Kings Cross, Sydney. Over 18 months between 2005 and 2007, the author conducted ethnographic fieldwork with women who injected psychostimulants and engaged in street-based sex work in Kings Cross, Sydney. Data sources included observations recorded as fieldnotes and transcripts of in-depth interviews with 12 women. Thematic analysis of the data was employed with particular attention to the women???s shared narratives. Key findings of the thesis were that 1) the Kings Cross environment plays a prominent role in shaping the lives of women, their psychostimulant injecting and street-based sex work practices; 2) psychostimulant injecting reinforces the opportunistic nature of street-based sex work as the primary method of income generating for women, restricting the development of occupational norms; 3) synergies exist between the drug and sex markets in Kings Cross, increasing the harms associated with both injecting and street-based sex work practices; 4) public health messages relating to sharing of injecting equipment and condom use fail to account for contextually driven decision-making and risk prioritising; 5) women develop lay epidemiological understandings as they attempt to reconcile the public health messages with the lived reality. The value of these findings is in the insights they provide into the everyday lives of these women in Kings Cross that have not been documented previously and their potential for informing ???bottom-up??? rather than ???top down??? approaches to future policy, practice and research.

Streszczenie:
This thesis examines the representation of weeping rulers in early medieval sources, focusing on the Carolingian empire between 790 and 888. The meanings applied to tears are culturally specific: thus, exploring how, why, when and where rulers cried can illuminate the dynamics of power and ideals of kingship in this period. This thesis provides a survey of a poorly understood phenomenon. It also challenges several assumptions about the nature of early medieval power. Rulers wept not only over their own sins (a well-recognised phenomenon), but also over the sins of others and out of a desire for heavenly glory. Thus, they wept in a ‘monastic' or ‘priestly' way. This was something associated more with certain rulers than others. As such, tears can be used as a lens through which developments in ideas about the relationship between secular rulers and the ecclesiastical hierarchy can be traced. The thesis is divided into six sections. The historiographical importance of this topic is discussed in the introduction. Chapter one assesses the understanding of tears in biblical, Roman and Merovingian sources. Chapter two focuses on the representation of tears in texts associated with the court of Charlemagne (d. 814). Chapter three explores how authors loyal to Louis the Pious (d. 840) used tears to respond to criticisms of him and his wife, the Empress Judith (d. 843). Chapter four turns to exegetical material written between 820 and 860 and examines how biblical rulers were represented weeping. In particular, the reception of these previously unrecognised images in royal courts and their influence on narrative sources will be considered. Chapter five explores sources from the later ninth century, focusing particularly on the writings of Hincmar of Reims (d. 882) and Notker of St Gall (d. 912). Chapter six considers tears in three case studies drawn from post=Carolingian sources. Finally the concluding section outlines the significance of this thesis for our understanding of Carolingian and post Carolingian political culture and the history of weeping in the middle ages.

This thesis explores the contribution of the Australian witch and trance artist Rosaleen Norton (1917-1979) to the 20th century Western esoteric tradition. Norton’s artistic career began in the 1940s, with publication of some of her earliest occult drawings, and reached a significant milestone in 1952 when the controversial volume The Art of Rosaleen Norton – co-authored with her lover, the poet Gavin Greenlees – was released in Sydney, immediately attracting a charge of obscenity. Norton rapidly acquired a reputation as the wicked ‘Witch of Kings Cross’, was vilified by journalists during the 1950s and 1960s, and was branded by many as evil and demonic. Norton’s witchcraft coven was dedicated to the practice of heathen worship and ceremonial sex magic and attracted a small number of dedicated inner-circle followers, most notably the renowned musical conductor Sir Eugene Goossens (1893-1962), whose personal and professional career would be irrevocably damaged as a result of his contact with Norton’s magical group. Within the social context of post-World War Two Australia Norton was unquestionably an unconventional figure at a time when the local population was approximately 80 per cent Christian. Norton claimed to be an initiated follower of the Great God Pan and also revered other ancient figures, most notably Hecate, Lilith and Lucifer. Norton claimed to encounter these mythic beings as experientially real on the ‘inner planes’ which she accessed while in a state of self-induced trance. Many of her most significant artworks were based on these magical encounters. Norton is presented in this thesis as a magical practitioner and artist whose creative work and thought has made a substantial contribution to the 20th century Western esoteric tradition – and, in particular, to the magic of the so-called ‘left-hand path’, which is a significant part of this modern occult tradition. Norton’s artworks are also compared to those of the notable British trance artist and occultist Austin Osman Spare (1886-1956), who is now widely regarded as a major figure in the 20th century magical revival.

With time ever changing, the trend of contemporary performing arts culture has had more changes. The interaction of two different kinds of cultures is taking a new step in the history of the performing arts. Taiwan's performing art groups continue to heat up and light up in the international arena. Since 1986, Taiwan's performing arts groups have been successively invited to many foreign arts festivals. The domestic National Theater Concert Hall holds Taiwan International Festival of Arts which invite many well-known foreign performing artists to participate in Taiwan's performing arts events and to add new features for the performing arts in Taiwan. Coinciding with the founding of a hundred years, this domestic group organized many large-scale exhibitions on this centurion occasion, such as the “Taipei International Flora Exposition”, National Palace Museum and the Contemporary Legend Theater performances ─ ─“Emperor Kangxi and Louis XIV”, etc. Combining the concept of "environmental theater"; the performance venue is set in an outdoor plaza. Completely different from the Concert Hall of the indoor theater, as with its space, light, sound, actors, limbs, stage designs, the audience’s attention will be impacted by the external ambiance. Therefore the performing choreographer must be well rounded to overcome these outdoor and natural external challenges. On the other hand, we must also take into account the personality and characteristic of the popular audience. The NTCH audience historically have favored seeing arts performances of the “Emperor Kangxi and the Sun King Louis XIV”, therefore the content of the performances must coincide with the tastes of the public. In "Emperor Kangxi and the Sun King Louis XIV”; the discussion primarily focuses on contemporary Taiwanese cross culture and also how it presents the performing arts through appearance and content. This study analyzes its stage props, text, and actor interpretations and defined the differences between other cross-cultural drama. It combines the concept of using an environmental theater, using an outdoor field to show performances and lighting projection with performers individual interpretations to create pieces of dramatic art. With changing times and cross-cultural trends, large-scale performances often have to show their own unique performing arts and how to coincide with other foreign cultures to create new cultural elements. In this study of the “Performing Arts”, “intercultural performance” and “performance field” these three key words and meanings are used to discuss performing arts which convey the consciousness of contemporary Taiwan society.

Streszczenie:
AbstractThe chapter uses the self-monitoring of menstrual cycles via an app as an example for an exploration of the ways in which people engage with data and its ambivalences in their daily lives. Period-tracking apps allow for the tracking and visualising of all kinds of personal data and offer a digitised, ‘smart’ version of the well-known menstruation calendar. In addition to insecurities emerging from ‘taming’ the uncertainties of (menstruating) bodies via quantification and algorithms, Sociology Compass, 8(12), 1344–1359 (2014)], the unanticipated collection of user data by private companies and the potential surveillance[Levy, Idaho Law Review, 51, 679–693 (2015)] raise issues of privacy and data security. This chapter will address these two forms of insecurity by drawing on material from an ongoing empirical study into the everyday use and discussion of period-tracking apps in Germany. For those interviewed, the negotiation of data insecurities can encompass an increased body competence, idiosyncratic interpretations of data or ignoring predictive deficiencies just as attempts of sidestepping dubious data collection or impositions of an algorithmic understanding of menstrual normalcy. Hence, the chapter gives insight into the multi-faceted ways people live with datafication and contributes to everyday perspectives in critical data studies.

Streszczenie:
Abstract This chapter draws on the Field Guide, as well as on a recent study of the boundary work of collaborating in cross-disciplinary and crosssector work, with added insights from literature on team science. Heeding the editors' mandate to focus on pragmatics, it depicts the 'how' of collaboration across boundaries of expertise in short essays that define major dimensions. Each essay is framed at the start by keywords and ends with pertinent resources that individuals and groups may use in whole or in part for training modules and workshops, interventions in the course of actually conducting research, and formal curricula in higher education. The initial section of the chapter describes the overarching topic of collaboration, including the role of a collaboration plan and the centrality of communication. The remaining sections discuss three subtopics that are often linked with collaboration. The first, cross-disciplinary and crosssector work, reveals distinctions in kinds of teamwork. The second, integration, discloses degrees of interaction and synthesis. The third, leadership, describes typical needs and responsibilities. These shorter accounts of related concepts and approaches begin with definitions of crossdisciplinarity (spanning multi-, inter- and transdisciplinary approaches) and cross-sector work (bridging the academy, government, industry, and communities in the north and global south). After a short summary, the conclusion reflects on the importance of integrative expertise among all team members along with needed requisite competencies.

Streszczenie:
AbstractLately, several studies have added crucial knowledge to our understanding of social movement participation by demonstrating its processual nature and how it relates to individual-level movement outcomes. Still, moral factors like values remain understudied. This paper develops a model of relationships between two types of value predispositions—self-transcendence and conformity—and differential participation in humanitarian activities, political protest and civil disobedience and their consequences for attitudinal changes of loss of institutional trust and an altered view of refugee policies. We use cross-sectional survey data from the mobilisation of the Danish refugee solidarity movement, which was revitalised in response to the 2015 refugee crisis. The main finding is that values, in accordance with our theoretical expectations, mainly influence attitudinal outcomes mediated by contexts of different kinds of movement activities. Conformity relates to participation in non-contentious humanitarian support activities that do not relate to any attitudinal outcomes. The non-conform and self-transcendent respondents participate to a higher degree in contentious political protest and civil disobedience, which relates to a loss of trust in the political institutions. The results suggest that heterogeneity of values and contexts of activism within a movement have implications for social movements’ role in the struggles for society’s fundamental morality, individual-level biographical outcomes of activism and movements’ internal processes related to collective identity.

Streszczenie:
AbstractCommunities around the world are facing an increasing number of ‘wicked problems’, many of which are spatial issues. Therefore, high expectations are placed on the role of planning in addressing them. However, such complex challenges cannot be easily solved with the traditional, sectoral planning approaches, or by planners and decision-makers alone; they require a cross-sectoral and societal-inclusive understanding and collaboration of various kinds of stakeholders. Consequently, in the search for new approaches and tools that favour experimentation, flexibility, and collaboration, planners and decision-makers are turning their attention towards the private sector, where Living Labs have been extensively used in open and user-oriented innovation. Despite the growing number of studies that picture them as a ‘magic recipe’ for experimentation and development of creative solutions for ‘wicked problems’, Living Labs have only recently started gaining attention in the spatial domain. In this chapter, we position Living Labs as a creative and collaborative planning approach. Based on a literature review on Living Labs, and on empirical research carried out in three spatial planning and water infrastructure projects from the Netherlands, we propose a five-phased ‘living lab way of working’ and reflect on the role of Living Labs as a planning method. We end by outlining several recommendations that could be useful when considering the use of Living Labs as a planning method. The conclusion of this chapter shows that despite the challenges they pose, Living Labs represent a relevant and growing practice in spatial planning, especially because they provide a conducive way of connecting local-scale and larger-scale planning issues and solutions.

Streszczenie:
This paper investigates the influence of spray distance on inflight particle status for Yttria Stabilized Zirconia (YSZ), Mo and NiCrAlY thermal spray powders in Ar-H2 plasma through modeling and experiments. Distributions of individual particle characteristics such as temperature, velocity and size at the point of the maximum particle flux and points of the squared grids were measured for a few plume cross-sections. Numerical simulations were performed using the experimental conditions, and parametric studies were also performed. In-flight particle characteristics and their distributions were presented at different standoff/spray distances to reveal the heating and melting behaviors of different kinds of materials such as metal, alloy and ceramics powders. It can be found that for ceramic, metal and alloy powders, the particle velocity and temperature all increase with spray distance and then decrease after reaching maximum. However the positions of maximum temperature and velocity depend strongly on the material and size of the particles. The statistical distributions of temperature and velocity at different spray distances were also presented. It can be observed that the temperature distribution becomes narrower as spray distance increases. The occurrence of such behavior can be explained by analyzing particle kinetic energy and molten status. The correlations between powder properties and spray conditions have been established and they can serve as guidance for spray distance optimization of air plasma spraying for metal, alloys and ceramics particles.

Nanotwins in metallic nanowires can improve mechanical strength and maintain high electrical conductivity. We demonstrated a method of pulse laser assisted electrodeposition, which can generate dense nanotwins with different directions in copper nanowires of uniform length. Transmission electron microcopy characterization shows at lower electrochemical potential of −0.2 Volt, nanotwins tend to align along the longitudinal direction of the nanowires whereas at the high potential −0.8 Volt, nanotwins of {111}/<112> type that cross the width of the wire are formed. We investigated the two types of nanotwins by comparing the microstructures under different electrochemistry and laser setting. Two different mechanisms are proposed for two kinds of nanotwin — annealing twins and growth twins.

Streszczenie:
Through analyzing one Y-shaped cross-section structure of honeycomb cell, the formula for relative density of honeycomb with regular hexagon cell shape is derived. And typical dynamic collapse process of honeycomb is illuminated. Three kinds of aluminum alloy(3003) honeycomb specimens for experiments are got by cutting honeycomb plate using the cutting tool made by ourselves. These specimens’ size specifications are 0.06mm (cell foil thickness t) × 4mm (cell sides length l) × 60mm (specimen height h), 0.06mm (t) × 6mm (l) × 30mm (h) and 0.08mm (t) × 10mm (l) × 50mm (h) respectively. Impact experiment using a drop-hammer apparatus (Instron dynatup 9250HV), whose initial mean impact velocity is 5m/s and mass is 14.6687kg, and the corresponding quasi-static one are also performed. Then the stain-stress curve of these three kinds of specimens under dynamic and quasi-static are recorded. Assuring the same load conditions with experiment and simplifying the honeycomb cell as one Y-shaped cross-section column, numerical simulation for these three kinds of honeycomb’s compression collapse process under impact loading are carried out by using an explicit FEM code LS-DYNA. Then the strain-stress curve is obtained by experiments and compared with numerical simulation. It is shown that the result of numerical simulation well coincide with the experiments. At last, the elastic and plastic collapse stress of theory, experiment and simulation are compared and the result shows that the plastic collapse stress of simulation is fairly well-matched with the experiment while the theory is less than them.

Streszczenie:
Several kinds of fluids with non-Newtonian behavior are manipulated in microfluidic devices for medical, chemical and biological applications. This work presents an analytical solution for the transient electroosmotic flow of Maxwell fluids in square cross-section microchannels. The appropriate combination of the momentum equation with the rheological Maxwell model derives in a mathematical model based in a hyperbolic partial differential equation, that permits to determine the velocity profile. The flow field is solved using the Green’s functions for the steady-state regime, and the method of separation of variables for the transient phenomenon in the electroosmotic flow. Taking in to account the normalized form of the governing equations, we predict the influence of the main dimensionless parameters on the velocity profiles. The results show an oscillatory behavior in the transient stage of the fluid flow, which is directly controlled by the dimensionless relaxation time, this parameter is an indicator of the competition between elastic and viscous effects. Hence, this investigation about the characteristics of the fluid rheology on the fluid velocity of the transient electroosmotic flow are discussed in order to contribute to the understanding the different tasks and design of microfluidic devices.

Streszczenie:
Abstract When a circular cylinder is transversely set in fluid flows, various kinds of oscillations in the in-line as well as the cross-flow direction occur due to the aerodynamic forces, which are mainly induced by periodic vortex sheadings. In case of large amplitude, an oscillating cylinder interacts with flows close to the cylinder surface and generates the distinct vortex shedding patterns. We numerically simulate the aeroelastic behaviors of a circular cylinder. Namely, a cylinder is elastically mounted for both in-line (x) and cross-flow (y) directions, therefore can translationally oscillate in any direction in uniform flows. We examine the aeroelastic characteristics in the in-line and the cross-flow vortex-induced oscillations, and relations among different types of modal motions of a circular cylinder with two degrees of freedom. It is shown that, with regard to the response characteristics, computational results based on three-dimensional simulations agree with the experimental results. In order to clarify the mechanism of the vortex-induced oscillation, we also investigate flow structures under oscillation, for example, the behaviors of separated layers from the cylinder and their following process of vortex formation in the near wake.

Results of numerical analyses of pipe section subjected to a three-point bending test enable numerical evaluation of deformation and analysis of the state of stress in both the contact area and that with imperfections. In the analysed instances plastic deformations of the object under examination is what we have to deal with. In the engineering practice such states could occur where the pipe contacts some other object(s) or when one pipe lies upon the other one. What happens is local loss of stability of the pipe’s cross-section. In consequence, effected are any kinds of folds or concavities.

Streszczenie:
At the beginning of this project, it was clear that R. albus adhered tightly to cellulose and its efficient degradation of this polysaccharide was dependent on micromolar concentrations of phenylacetic acid (PAA) and phenylpropionic acid (PPA). The objectives for our research were: i) to identify how many different kinds of cellulose binding proteins are produced by Ruminococcus albus; ii) to isolate and clone the genes encoding some of these proteins from the same bacterium; iii) to determine where these various proteins were located and; iv) quantify the relative importance of these proteins in affecting the rate and extent to which the bacterium becomes attached to cellulose. BARD support has facilitated a number of breakthroughs relevant to our fundamental understanding of the adhesion process. First, R. albus possesses multiple mechanisms for adhesion to cellulose. The P.I.'s laboratory has discovered a novel cellulose-binding protein (CbpC) that belongs to the Pil-protein family, and in particular, the type 4 fimbrial proteins. We have also obtained genetic and biochemical evidence demonstrating that, in addition to CbpC-mediated adhesion, R. albus also produces a cellulosome-like complex for adhesion. These breakthroughs resulted from the isolation (in Israel and the US) of spontaneously arising mutants of R. albus strains SY3 and 8, which were completely or partially defective in adhesion to cellulose, respectively. While the SY3 mutant strain was incapable of growth with cellulose as the sole carbon source, the strain 8 mutants showed varying abilities to degrade and grow with cellulose. Biochemical and gene cloning experiments have been used in Israel and the US, respectively, to identify what are believed to be key components of a cellulosome. This combination of cellulose adhesion mechanisms has not been identified previously in any bacterium. Second, differential display, reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (DD RT-PCR) has been developed for use with R. albus. A major limitation to cellulose research has been the intractability of cellulolytic bacteria to genetic manipulation by techniques such as transposon mutagenesis and gene displacement. The P.I.'s successfully developed DD RT- PCR, which expanded the scope of our research beyond the original objectives of the project, and a subset of the transcripts conditionally expressed in response to PAA and PPA have been identified and characterized. Third, proteins immunochemically related to the CbpC protein of R. albus 8 are present in other R. albus strains and F. intestinalis, Western immunoblots have been used to examine additional strains of R. albus, as well as other cellulolytic bacteria of ruminant origin, for production of proteins immunochemically related to the CbpC protein. The results of these experiments showed that R. albus strains SY3, 7 and B199 all possess a protein of ~25 kDa which cross-reacts with polyclonal anti-CbpC antiserum. Several strains of Butyrivibrio fibrisolvens, Ruminococcus flavefaciens strains C- 94 and FD-1, and Fibrobacter succinogenes S85 produced no proteins that cross-react with the same antiserum. Surprisingly though, F. intestinalis strain DR7 does possess a protein(s) of relatively large molecular mass (~200 kDa) that was strongly cross-reactive with the anti- CbpC antiserum. Scientifically, our studies have helped expand the scope of our fundamental understanding of adhesion mechanisms in cellulose-degrading bacteria, and validated the use of RNA-based techniques to examine physiological responses in bacteria that are nor amenable to genetic manipulations. Because efficient fiber hydrolysis by many anaerobic bacteria requires both tight adhesion to substrate and a stable cellulosome, we believe our findings are also the first step in providing the resources needed to achieve our long-term goal of increasing fiber digestibility in animals.

Streszczenie:
Vocational training systems in middle-income countries are going to face multiple challenges in the post-COVID era, notably, challenges related to (1) automation; (2) the transition to a green economy, and (3) demographic pressures. Of these, automation - linked to the burgeoning ‘fourth industrial revolution’ that is set to transform the global economy - represents the most serious challenge and is the only one of the three challenges discussed in any depth in this paper. Whilst estimates of the likely scale of automation in the coming years and decades vary widely, it appears likely that waves of automation will lead to a dramatic decline in many kinds of jobs that largely involve routine, repetitive tasks. These trends pre-date COVID-19, but the disruption caused by the pandemic provides an opportunity to prepare for these challenges by implementing vocational training system reforms as part of the Build Back Better agenda. Reforms to vocational training systems will be crucial to ensuring middle-income countries respond appropriately to accelerating labour market changes. However, they should only form a limited part of that response and need to be integrated with a wide range of other policy measures. Vocational training reform will need to occur in the context of major reforms to basic education in order to ensure that all workers are equipped with the cross-cutting cognitive and socio-emotional skills they will require to perform hard-to-automate tasks and to be able to learn and adapt rapidly in a changing economy. Middle-income countries will also likely need to progressively expand social protection schemes in order to provide a safety net for workers that struggle to adapt to changing labour market requirements.
