Mobile edge computing (MEC) can use a wireless access network to serve smart devices nearby so as to improve the service experience of users. In this paper, a joint optimization method based on the Genetic Algorithm (GA) for task offloading proportion, channel bandwidth, and mobile edge servers’ (MES) computing resources is proposed in the scenario where some computing tasks can be partly offloaded to the MES. Under the limitation of wireless transmission resources and MESs’ processing resources, GA was used to solve the optimization problem of minimizing user task completion time, and the optimal offloading task strategy and resource allocation scheme were obtained. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can effectively reduce the task completion time and ensure the fairness of users’ completion times.

Streszczenie:
Routing plays a crucial role in provisioning Quality of Service (QoS) over WiFi-based Long Distance (WiLD) mesh networks. Traditional routing protocols normally maintain a single optimal path between each pair of source and destination nodes. In gateway-based mesh networks, the optimal paths between gateway and other nodes often overlap and hence degrades the overall network performance significantly. Multipath routing protocols are widely used in Wireless Mess Networks (WMN) for providing QoS to various network applications. Smooth routing of real time traffic with varying QoS requirements is a challenging task. In this paper, we propose a QoS-aware hybrid multipath routing protocol which can discover multiple maximally disjoint paths between a gateway and any other node. The gateway node selects n-best paths for the source node. Before starting a given real time flow, a path selection scheme chooses the appropriate path or set of paths amongst the available discovered paths. To evenly distribute the traffic among the paths chosen, an admission control mechanism has been proposed. In case of significant change in the quality of any discovered paths, a path maintenance process induces the source node to trigger a route update process. The proposed protocol enhances the performance of real time traffic significantly. The simulation results show that the proposed protocol achieves significant improvement in different QoS parameters. With the increase in number of disjoint paths from source to destination, a substantial improvement in throughput and delay is observed.

The requirement of mounting several access points and base stations is increasing tremendously due to recent advancements and the need for high-data-rate communication services of 5G and 6G wireless communication systems. In the near future, the enormous number of these access points might cause a mess. In such cases, an optically transparent antenna (OTA) is the best option for making the environment more appealing and pleasant. OTAs provide the possible solution as these maintain the device aesthetics to achieve transparency as well as fulfill the basic coverage and bandwidth requirements. Various attempts have been made to design OTAs to provide coverage for wireless communication, particularly for the dead zones. These antennas can be installed on building windows, car windscreens, towers, trees, and smart windows, which enables network access for vehicles and people passing by those locations. Several transparent materials and techniques are used for transparent antenna design. Thin-film and mesh-grid techniques are very popular to transform metallic parts of the antenna into a transparent material. In this article, a comprehensive review of both the techniques used for the design of OTAs is presented. The performance comparison of OTAs on the basis of bandwidth, gain, transparency, transmittance, and efficiency is also presented. An OTA is the best choice in these situations to improve the aesthetics and comfort of the surroundings with high antenna performance.

Wireless telemedicine using GSM and GPRS technologies can only provide low bandwidth connections, which makes it difficult to transmit images and video. Satellite or 3G wireless transmission provides greater bandwidth, but the running costs are high. Wireless networks (WLANs) appear promising, since they can supply high bandwidth at low cost. However, the WLAN technology has limitations, such as coverage. A new wireless networking technology named the wireless mesh network (WMN) overcomes some of the limitations of the WLAN. A WMN combines the characteristics of both a WLAN and ad hoc networks, thus forming an intelligent, large scale and broadband wireless network. These features are attractive for telemedicine and telecare because of the ability to provide data, voice and video communications over a large area. One successful wireless telemedicine project which uses wireless mesh technology is the Emergency Room Link (ER-LINK) in Tucson, Arizona, USA. There are three key characteristics of a WMN: self-organization, including self-management and self-healing; dynamic changes in network topology; and scalability. What we may now see is a shift from mobile communication and satellite systems for wireless telemedicine to the use of wireless networks based on mesh technology, since the latter are very attractive in terms of cost, reliability and speed.

Abstract: Wireless mesh networks (WMNs) have emerged as a key technology for next-generation wireless networking. Because of their advantages over other wireless networks, WMNs are undergoing rapid progress and inspiring numerous applications. In multi-hop wireless mesh networks (WMNs) experience frequent link failures caused by channel interference, dynamic obstacles and/or applications’ bandwidth demands. These failures cause severe performance degradation in WMNs or require expensive, manual network management for their real-time recovery. This paper presents an Autonomous network Reconfiguration System (ARS) that enables a multi-radio WMN to autonomously recover from local link failures to preserve network performance. ARS also improves channel efficiency by more than 90% over the other recovery methods. During their lifetime, multi-hop wireless mesh networks (WMNs) experience frequent link failures caused by channel interference, dynamic obstacles, and/or applications’ bandwidth demands. These failures cause severe performance degradation in WMNs or require expensive manual network management for their real-time recovery. By using channel and radio diversities in WMNs, ARS generates necessary changes in local radio and channel assignments in order to recover from failures. Next, based on the thus-generated configuration changes, the system cooperatively reconfigures network settings among local mesh routers. ARS has been evaluated extensively through ns2-based simulation. Our evaluation results show that ARS outperforms existing failure-recovery schemes in improving channel-efficiency by more than 90% and in the ability of meeting the applications’ bandwidth demands by an average of 200%. Wireless mesh networks with directional antennas are expected to be a new promising technology and an economic approach for providing wireless broadband services in rural areas. In these networks, the effective use of multiple non-overlapping channels can significantly enhance the network capacity by allowing more concurrent transmissions. However, the performances of wireless mesh networks are severely degraded by interference between links with overlapping channels in nearby areas. In this paper, we address the issue of joint utilization and balance in channel assignment for rural wireless mesh networks. We design a new channel assignment framework with the goal of optimizing the channel resource utilization across the entire network while taking balanced allocation into account. This balanced channel assignment allows for the cost-effective reuse of channels without a consequent loss of quality in the rural wireless mesh networks. We also evaluate the proposed framework on some Cartesian product graphs that are popular interconnection network topologies. The framework guarantees that these topologies require a small number of channels for balanced allocation.

IEEE 802.16 based wireless mesh networks (WMNs) are a promising broadband access solution to support flexibility, cost effectiveness and fast deployment of the fourth generation infrastructure based wireless networks. Reducing the time for channel establishment is critical for low latency/interactive Applications. According to IEEE 802.16 MAC protocol, there are three scheduling algorithms for assigning TDMA slots to each network node: centralized and distributed the distributed is further divided into two operational modes coordinated distributed and uncoordinated distributed. In coordinated distributed scheduling algorithm, network nodes have to transmit scheduling message in order to inform other nodes about their transfer schedule. In this paper a new approach is proposed to improve coordinated distributed scheduling efficiency in IEEE 802.16 mesh mode, with respect to three parameter Throughput, Average end to end delay and Normalized Overhead. Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs), have a potential offering relatively stable Internet broadband access. The rapid development and growth of WMNs attract ISPs to support users’ coverage anywhere anytime. To achieve this goal network architecture must be addressed carefully. Software Defined Networking (SDN) proposes new network architecture for wired and wireless networks. Software Defined Wireless Networking (SDWN) has a great potential to increase efficiency, ease the complexity of control and management, and accelerate technology innovation rate of wireless networking. An SDN controller is the core component of an SDN network. It needs to have updated reports of the network status change, as in network topology and quality of service (QoS) in order to effectively configure and manage the network it controls. In this paper, we propose Flat Distributed Software Defined Wireless Mesh Network architecture where the controller aggregates entire topology discovery and monitors QoS properties of extended WMN nodes using Link Layer Discovery Protocol (LLDP) protocol, which is not possible in multi-hop ordinary architectures. The proposed architecture has been implemented on top of POX controller and Advanced Message Queuing Protocol (AMQP) protocol. The experiments were conducted in a Mininet-wifi emulator, the results present the architecture control plane consistency and two application cases: topology discovery and QoS monitoring. The current results push us to study QoS-routing for video streaming over WMN.

Abstract The interest in services offered by wireless network has been growing for many years. It has encouraged the development of wireless technologies. New solutions are able to satisfy the ever-increasing demands concerning wireless services. It is also evident in the diversification of quality assessment methods employed with reference to connections used in such networks. One of the basic elements used in connection quality assessment are metrics. The use of metrics is directly linked to the type of the routing protocol applied in a given network. The selection of a given routing protocol is often determined by its specific properties that might be advantageous in a certain network type, or that are important in terms of the type or scope of services provided. Therefore, it is easy to identify a relationship between metrics and the area of application of a given routing protocol. The significance and diversity of metrics is also reflected inWireless Mesh Networks (WMNs). We investigate the interaction between network coding and transmission rate adaption in wireless mesh network. Traditional network coding schemes either assume a fixed transmission rate and do not consider the impact of using diverse rates on the performance of the network, which limits the performance of the wireless networks. each node makes the routing decision based on the link quality, making full use of the transmission capacity of idle nodes in the network, which effectively reduces the communication costs between nodes, as well as the probability of packet duplication. Simulations show that TRANC can effectively improve network throughput with a lower end to end delay.

A wireless mesh network (WMN) is a communicationnetwork made up of radio nodes organized in a meshtopology. Wireless mesh network often consists of meshclients, mesh routers and gateways. A wireless Mesh networkuses multi-hop communication. Due to multi-hop architectureand wireless nature, Mesh networks are vulnerable to varioustypes of Denial of Services attack. It suffers from Packetdropping at Routing layer. Client nodes are unable to getservices from gateway nodes, hence network gets down. ThePaper emphasis on the developing of a path protocol when theminimun possible packet dropp occurs in wireless meshnetworks. Due to packet droping occurrences the networkperformance degrades. In the work, we have evaluated thePerformance of WMN under packet dropping on the basis oftheir throughput and Data packet loss.

Wireless Mesh Network (WMN) is envisaged to be key component of next generation wireless networks which can effectively cope with the ever increasing fast and vast growing need to access data and avail services over the network. These networks provide infrastructure less high speed internet access to the end users and have a cutting edge over the existing networks. Routing, being most critical issue in their implementation. The dynamic network conditions impose setbacks in the selection of optimal path. There is exigent requirement to tackle these routing issues in context of these networks. In this paper, the authors apply a nature inspired soft computing based meta heuristic technique called Termite Colony Optimization in WMN to find an optimal route based on the link cost. TCO approach is inspired by the emergent behaviour exhibited by the natural termite colony swarms for mound building. Experimentally TCO shows faster converges over some existing algorithms.

Wireless mesh networks (WMNs) have been drawing significant attention in recent years due to their flexibility in providing extensive wireless backbone. WMNs typically consist of mesh routers and mesh clients with each node operating not only as a host but also as a router. Due to the traffic patterns in WMNs, load-balancing becomes an important issue and may degrade the performance of the entire network. This paper proposes a routing metric known as Weighted Cumulative Expected Transmission Time with Load-Balancing (WCETT-LB) for wireless mesh networks. WCETTT-LB enhances the basic Weighted Cumulative Expected Transmission Time (WCETT) by incorporating load-balancing into the routing metric. Unlike existing schemes, WCETT-LB implements load-balancing at mesh routers. WCETT-LB provides a congestion-aware routing and traffic splitting mechanism to achieve global load-balancing in the network. By conducting an extensive simulation experiments, the result shows that WCETT-LB outperforms the existing routing metrics in load-balancing in terms of achieving high packet delivery ratio, low average end-to-end delay and low average congestion level in wireless mesh networks. The qualitative and quantitative analysis also show the significance of the proposed scheme.

As wireless mesh networks have been deployed in the urban area, dynamic channel allocation is more challengeable because co-located wireless mediums are likely to be tuned to the same channels and may interfere with communication. Further, existing model doesn’t consider reutilizing routing resource. This paper presents an efficient scheduling and routing model considering an external interference and routing resource reutilization for multi-channel wireless mesh networks. Each mesh node uses a novel technique to estimate the usage status of all the channels within its interference range and assigns channels dynamically to radios to minimize interference within the mesh network and between the mesh network and collocated wireless networks. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed algorithm can improve the network throughput, reduce packet failure rate and consume more energy while transmission substantially compared to other algorithms by removing the interference overestimation problem and assigning channels aggressively with priority.

Streszczenie:
The wireless mesh network (WMN) has proven to be a great choice for network communication technology. WMNs are composed of access points (APs) that are installed and communicate with each other through multi-hop wireless networks. One or more of these APs acts as a gateway (GW) to the internet. Hosts of WMNs are stationary or mobile. According to the structure of WMNs, some network features may be affected, such as the overall performance, channel interference, and AP connectivity. In this paper, we propose a new adaptive channel allocation algorithm for a multi-radio multi-channel wireless mesh network. The algorithm is aimed to minimize the number of channel reassignments while maximizing the performance under practical constraints. The algorithm defines a decision function for the channel reassignments. The decision function aims to minimize the traffic around the GW. Whenever the traffic changes in the wireless mesh network, the decision function decides which channel radio reassignment should be done. We demonstrated the effectiveness of our algorithm through extensive simulations using Network Simulator 2 (NS-2).

Performance testing experiments with different numbers of nodes and traffic loads and different message payload sizes are conducted under unicast transmission. The impact on network performance is evaluated in terms of delivery ratio and delivery delay, which, consequently, affect the energy consumption and, hence, network lifetime. The results of this investigation are an important contribution to help researchers to propose mechanisms, schemes, and protocols to improve performance in such challenging networks.

Streszczenie:
Latency-sensitive applications for the Internet of Things often require performance guarantees that contemporary wireless networks fail to offer. The cause of this shortcoming lies in the inherent complexity and inefficiency of networking abstractions such as routing, medium access control, and store-and-forward packet switching, which coordinate multiple nodes across a wireless network. This research highlight describes a novel networking paradigm that aims to enable a new class of latency-sensitive applications by systematically breaking these abstractions. The paradigm, referred to as a symbol-synchronous bus, has nodes that concurrently transmit optical signals and thus delivers a wireless mesh network with a performance envelope resembling that of a wired bus in terms of deterministic latency and throughput. A physical prototype, called ZERO-WIRE, confirms that symbol-synchronous buses unlock a novel end-to-end performance envelope for wireless mesh networks: our 25-node test bed achieves 19kbps of contention-agnostic goodput, latency under 1 ms for two-byte frames across four hops, jitter on the order of 10μs of (is, and a base reliability of 99%. These early results suggest a bright future for the under-explored area of optical wireless mesh networks in delivering ubiquitous connectivity through a low-complexity physical layer.

Streszczenie:
Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) have attracted a great deal of interest in recent years as a cost-effective method to provide a wireless network infrastructure. To accommodate various types of application traffic in WMNs, improvement of network capacity is one of the most critical issues. The efficiency of wireless network resource utilization decreases due to radio interference when multiple transmissions occur simultaneously in an interference region. To resolve this problem, we focus on the transmission power control of mesh nodes. We expect to improve spatial reuse by applying power control because this decreases radio interference between wireless links. In this paper, we propose power control methods of mesh nodes for improving spatial reuse in TDMA-based wireless mesh networks. We first propose two types of power control methods, which employ a simple threshold-based mechanism. Furthermore, we develop an additional method that suppresses the unnecessary increase in path length associated with limiting the increase in the hop count to the nearby mesh nodes. Numerical evaluation results reveal that the proposed method decreases the frame length by up to 27% with non sensitive parameter setting.
