<p>In offered research, we propose to observe diurnal soaring birds to check, whether there the positions of birds in formations are such, that the wing tip interval and depth meet the predictions of aerodynamic theory for achievement of maximal conservation of energy or predictions of the hypothesis of communication. We also can estimate, whether adverse conditions of a wind influence the ability of birds to support formation. We can assume that windy conditions during flight might make precision flight more difficult by inducing both unpredictable bird and vortex positions. To this, we need to found change in wing-tip spacing variation with increasing wind speed, suggesting or rejecting that in high winds bird skeins maintained similar variation to that on calm days. The interrelation between variation of mean depth and wind speed should prove this hypothesis. Little is known about the importance of depth, but in high winds the vortex is likely to break up more rapidly and its location become unpredictable the further back a bird flies; therefore, a shift towards skeins with more regular depths at high wind speeds may compensate for the unpredictability of the vortex locations. Any significant relationship between the standard deviation of wing-tip spacing and wind speed suggests that wind has a major effect on optimal positioning.</p> <p>Results of proposed study will be used also as the auxiliary tool in radar research of bird migration, namely in research of flight features of soaring birds. It is extremely important to determine all pertinent characteristics of flock for model species, namely flocking birds.</p> <p><em>Kew words: birds, flock, radar, flight</em></p><p> </p>

<p>The paper deals with small wind turbines for grid-independent or small smart grid wind turbine systems. Not all small turbine manufacturers worldwide have access to the engineering capacity for designing an efficient turbine. The objective of this work is to provide an easy-to-handle integrated design and performance prediction method for wind turbines and to show exemplary applications.</p> <p>The underlying model for the design and performance prediction method is based on an advanced version of the well-established blade-element-momentum theory, encoded in MATLAB™. Results are (i) the full geometry of the aerodynamically profiled and twisted blades which are designed to yield maximum power output at a given wind speed and (ii) the non-dimensional performance characteristics of the turbine in terms of power, torque and thrust coefficient as a function of tip speed ratio. The non-dimensional performance characteristics are the basis for the dimensional characteristics and the synthesis of the rotor to the electric generator with its load.</p> <p>Two parametric studies illustrate typical outcomes of the design and performance prediction method: A variation of the design tip speed ratio and a variation of the number of blades. The predicted impact of those parameters on the non-dimensional performance characteristics agrees well with common knowledge and experience.</p> <p>Eventually, an interplay of various designed turbine rotors and the given drive train/battery charger is simulated. Criterions for selection of the rotor are the annual energy output, the rotor speed at design wind speed as well as high winds, and the axial thrust exerted on the rotor by the wind. The complete rotor/drive train//battery charger assembly is tested successfully in the University of Siegen wind tunnel.</p>

This paper is purported to determine the wind energy potential of Ghana for 2010 and 2018 using GIS and RS technologies and how the result could be used to develop a country strategy that benefits the ordinary Ghanaian. In doing this, two different wind potential maps of Ghana were generated for 2010 and 2018 using data from Ghana meteorological Unit and Windfinder respectively. Moreover, the Inverse Distance Weighted interpolation of winds peed was used to generate the maps at different hub heights for 2010 and 2018. The results indicate that, the 2010 wind map showed wind speed is highest (8m/s) in the southernmost part of Ghana (i.e. Coastal part of Greater Accra and Volta Regions) at 10m high while the wind map of 2018 showed that wind speed is highest (9m/s) in the Upper East Region of Ghana at 10m high. As wind energy is untapped in Ghana, we advised that Government should further explore the results for the Upper East Region in ascertaining that it was not influenced by Trade winds and apply to different sectors of the economy through appropriate institutional regulations. The wind energy in Northern Ghana should be dedicated to mechanized agriculture, augmenting electricity tariffs for the poor in those areas and extending electricity to rural communities that do not have access to the national grid under the rural electrification project. Meanwhile, the wind energy generated from the southern part of Ghana should be dedicated mostly to commercial and industrial activities. Streszczenie:
AbstractThis paper describes a new computationally efficient and statistically robust sampling method for generating dynamically downscaled climatologies. It is based on a Monte Carlo method coupled with stratified sampling. A small yet representative set of “case days” is selected with guidance from a large-scale reanalysis. When downscaled, the sample closely approximates the long-term meteorological record at a location, in terms of the probability density function. The method is demonstrated for the creation of wind maps to help determine the suitability of potential sites for wind energy farms. Turbine hub-height measurements at five U.S. and European tall tower sites are used as a proxy for regional climate model (RCM) downscaled winds to validate the technique. The tower-measured winds provide an independent test of the technique, since RCM-based downscaled winds exhibit an inherent dependence upon the large-scale reanalysis fields from which the case days are sampled; these same reanalysis fields would provide the boundary conditions to the RCM. The new sampling method is compared with the current approach widely used within the wind energy industry for creating wind resource maps, which is to randomly select 365 case days for downscaling, with each day in the calendar year being represented. The new method provides a more accurate and repeatable estimate of the long-term record of winds at each tower location. Additionally, the new method can closely approximate the accuracy of the current (365 day) industry approach using only a 180-day sample, which may render climate downscaling more tractable for those with limited computing resources.

The dependence between load capacity and energy generation capabilities of the active set of a wind power plant taking into account the energy capacity of BESS has been determined. A mathematical model of the BESS has been developed. The elaborated model is compared with two other models: a black box module and a model based on equivalent circuit model. The application of the developed model provides an opportunity to optimize the energy capacity of BESS for the specified parameters and modes of operation of the wind power plant. Using the obtained results expands the possibilities of the adequate management of energy-dynamic modes of energy systems with renewable energy sources, provides mitigation of transition processes in conditions of insufficient or excessive wind speeds and consumer loads.

With the massive development and application of wind energy, wind power is having an increasing proportion in power grid. The changes of the wind speed in a wind farm will lead to fluctuations in the power output which would affect the stable operation of the power grid. Therefore the research of the characteristics of wind speed has become a hot topic in the field of wind energy. In the paper, the wind speed at the wind farm was simulated in a combination of wind speeds by which wind speed was decomposed of four components including basic wind, gust wind, stochastic wind and gradient wind which denote the regularity, the mutability, the gradual change and the randomness of a natural wind respectively. The model is able to reflect the characteristics of a real wind, easy for engineering simulation and can also estimate the wind energy of a wind farm through the wind speed and wake effect model. This paper has directive significance in the estimation of wind resource and the layout of wind turbines in wind farms.

Cities all around the globe are ramping up efforts to transform their infrastructure in order to achieve a carbon-neutral and sustainable future, resulting in fast electrification of transportation networks. The need for power in this industry is rising, notably in light rail transit. Application of train rooftops wind energy conversion has the potential to power light rail transits with renewable energy. This research paper presents a way to generate electrical energy by utilizing strong wind pressure from light rail trains that channels the induced wind towards the turbine. The current invention's main aim is to establish a method and system for producing energy utilizing winds that can be conveniently available in the operation of trains. Here the wind energy is independent of the variations in the direction and speeds in which seasonal winds move, which do not have the appropriate wind force or force at all times or places for operating the wind turbines. Vertical axis wind turbines are selected due to their advantage for the application under consideration. SOLIDWORKS and MATLAB simulation software were used for the design of the Train Roof-Tops Wind Energy Conversion System (TRT-WECS). The former was used to perform computational fluid dynamics (CFD) on the both normal train as well as the train having a turbine installed on the top, and a comparison has been made in terms of various parameters that affect the performance of the newly designed TRT-WECS. A mathematical model comprising mechanical and electric components has been developed by using MATLAB. Finally, the study found out that this special TRT-WECS design installed in each train provides an annual energy output of 4.9 MWh.

Due to the rapid depletion of conventional energy resources like fossil fuels and their harmful effects on the environment, there is an urgent need to seek alternative and sustainable energy sources. Wind energy is considered as one of the efficient source of energy which can be converted to useful form of energy like electrical energy. Though the field of wind engineering has developed in the recent era there is still scope for improvement in the effective utilization of energy. Energy efficiency in wind turbine is largely determined by the aerodynamics of the turbine blades and the characteristics of the turbulent fluid flow. The objective of this paper is to have a review on the improvement of Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine (HAWT) blade design by incorporating biomimetics into blades. Biomimetics is the field of science in which we adapt designs from nature to solve modern problems. The morphology of the wing-like flipper of the humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) has potential for aerodynamic applications. Instead of straight leading edges like that of conventional hydrofoils, the humpback whale flipper has a number of sinusoidal rounded bumps, called tubercles arranged periodically along the leading edge. The presence of tubercles modifies the flow over the blade surface, creating vortices between the tubercles. These vortices interact with the flow over the tubercle and accelerate that flow, helping to maintain a partially attached boundary layer. This aerodynamic effect can delay stall to higher angles of attack, increase lift and reduce drag compared to the post-stall condition of conventional airfoils. The modified airfoil is characterized by a superior lift/drag ratio (L/D ratio) due to greater boundary layer attachment from vortices energizing the boundary layer.

In planning, design, operation and maintenance of wind farms, the spatial variations in wind velocity become significant. Although there are many wind energy studies at a single location, spatial assessment evaluation methods are scanty. Wind velocity maps may provide a common basis for regional assessment and interpretations, but they do not yield means of regional prediction. Hence, the main purpose of this paper is to propose some new concepts and methods that are useful prior to regional wind energy potential calculations. Among these are Directional Point Cumulative Semivariogram (DPCSV) concepts, which provide information concerning local spatial wind velocity and/or elevation changes. It is possible to obtain the radius of wind velocity influence around each station, along desired directions, based on the DPCSV concept. The implementation of the proposed methodology is presented for some wind velocity measurement stations in Turkey. For the application, the sample DPCSVs are first obtained from the available data, and then converted to Local Spatial Dependence Functions (LSDF). These functions are the basic ingredients for the regional wind velocity estimations. The reliability of the methodology is measured through the cross validation procedure and it is observed that the procedure is valid with less than 20% error.

The Weibull distribution function is essential for planning and designing wind-farm implementation projects and wind-resource assessments. However, the Weibull distribution is limited for those areas with high frequencies of calm winds. One solution is to use the hybrid Weibull distribution. In fact, when the wind speed data present heterogeneous structures, it makes sense to group them into classes that describe the different wind regimes. However, the single use of the Weibull distribution presents fitting errors that should be minimized. In this context, mixture distributions represent an appropriate alternative for modelling wind-speed data. This approach was used to combine the distributions associated with different wind-speed classes by weighting the contribution of each of them. This study proposes an approach based on mixtures of Weibull distributions for modelling wind-speed data in the West Africa region. The study focused on mixture Weibull (WW-BAY) and mixture hybrid Weibull (WWH-BAY) distributions using Bayes' theorem to characterize the wind speed distribution over twelve years of recorded data at the Abuja, Accra, Cotonou, Lome, and Tambacounda sites in West Africa. The parameters of the models were computed using the expectation-maximization (E-M) algorithm. The parameters of the models were estimated using the expectation-maximization (E-M) algorithm. The initial values were provided by the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm. The results obtained from the proposed models were compared with those from the classical Weibull distribution whose parameters are estimated by some numerical method such as the energy pattern factor, maximum likelihood, and the empirical Justus methods based on statistical criteria. It is found that the WWH-BAY model gives the best prediction of power density at the Cotonou and Lome sites, with relative percentage error values of 0.00351 and 0.01084. The energy pattern factor method presents the lowest errors at the Abuja site with a relative percentage error value of -0.54752, Accra with -0.55774, and WW-BAY performs well for the Tambacounda site with 0.19232. It is recommended that these models are useful for wind energy applications in the West African region.

The insertion of renewable sources to diversify the energy matrix is one of the alternatives for the energy transition. In this sense, Brazil is one of the largest producers of renewable energy in the world, mainly in wind generation. However, the impact of integrating intermittent sources into the system depends on their penetration level, causing problems in the electrical network. To evaluate this scenario, the present article aims to investigate the power quality problems generated by wind turbines in connection with the electrical system and how battery energy storage systems (BESS) solve or mitigate these disturbances in the network. Knowing the impacts of high generation power variability, the focus of the work is the application of power smoothing. However, results are presented for five applications (factor correction, voltage control, power factor smoothing, frequency control and time shift) that can be carried out at the studied wind farm. This article presents a real BESS, which has a capacity of 1 MW/1.29 MWh, connected in parallel to a group of wind turbines that provides a power of approximately 50.4 MW located in Brazil. In addition to presenting the system simulation in HOMER Pro software, this study validates the effectiveness of this BESS by presenting real operation data for each application.

Renewable energy sources (RESs) such as wind and solar are frequently hit by fluctuations due to, for example, insufficient wind or sunshine. Energy storage technologies (ESTs) mitigate the problem by storing excess energy generated and then making it accessible on demand. While there are various EST studies, the literature remains isolated and dated. The comparison of the characteristics of ESTs and their potential applications is also short. This paper fills this gap. Using selected criteria, it identifies key ESTs and provides an updated review of the literature on ESTs and their application potential to the renewable energy sector. The critical review shows a high potential application for Li-ion batteries and most fit to mitigate the fluctuation of RESs in utility grid integration sector. However, for Li-ion batteries to be fully adopted in the RESs utility grid integration, their cost needs to be reduced.

To balance electricity production and demand, it is required to use different prediction techniques extensively. Renewable energy, due to its intermittency, increases the complexity and uncertainty of forecasting, and the resulting accuracy impacts all the different players acting around the electricity systems around the world like generators, distributors, retailers, or consumers. Wind forecasting can be done under two major approaches, using meteorological numerical prediction models or based on pure time series input. Deep learning is appearing as a new method that can be used for wind energy prediction. This work develops several deep learning architectures and shows their performance when applied to wind time series. The models have been tested with the most extensive wind dataset available, the National Renewable Laboratory Wind Toolkit, a dataset with 126,692 wind points in North America. The architectures designed are based on different approaches, Multi-Layer Perceptron Networks (MLP), Convolutional Networks (CNN), and Recurrent Networks (RNN). These deep learning architectures have been tested to obtain predictions in a 12-h ahead horizon, and the accuracy is measured with the coefficient of determination, the R² method. The application of the models to wind sites evenly distributed in the North America geography allows us to infer several conclusions on the relationships between methods, terrain, and forecasting complexity. The results show differences between the models and confirm the superior capabilities on the use of deep learning techniques for wind speed forecasting from wind time series data.

Wind energy as a renewable energy source is easily available and widely distributed in cities. However, current wind-energy harvesters are inadequate at capturing energy from low-speed winds in urban areas, thereby limiting their application in distributed self-powered sensor networks. A triboelectric–electromagnetic hybrid harvester with a low startup wind speed (LSWS-TEH) is proposed that also provides output power within a wide range of wind speeds. An engineering-implementable propeller design method is developed to reduce the startup wind speed of the harvester. A mechanical analysis of the aerodynamics of the rotating propeller is performed, and optimal propeller parameter settings are found that greatly improved its aerodynamic torque. By combining the high-voltage output of the triboelectric nanogenerator under low-speed winds with the high-power output of the electromagnetic generator under high-speed winds, the harvester can maintain direct current output over a wide wind-speed range after rectification. Experiments show that the harvester activates at wind speeds as low as 1.2 m/s, powers a sensor with multiple integrated components in 1.7 m/s wind speeds, and drives a Bluetooth temperature and humidity sensor in 2.7 m/s wind speeds. The proposed small, effective, inexpensive hybrid energy harvester provides a promising way for self-powered requirements in smart city settings.

Sail-assisted technology can reduce greenhouse-gas emissions by saving the energy consumption of ships with wind energy utilization. The distribution characteristics of marine wind resources are critical to the energy-saving effect of sail-assisted ships. However, due to the lack of effective energy-saving evaluation methods for improving the utilization rate of wind energy, a high potential for wind energy utilization still exists. A novel energy-saving evaluation method based on the wind energy resource analysis of typical ship routes is proposed in this paper. First, a three-degree-of-freedom motion model for sail-assisted ships considering the wing sail forces is constructed. Then, a wind resource acquisition and analysis method based on spatial–temporal interpolation is proposed. On this basis, the wind field probability matrix and wing sail force matrix are established. Ultimately, an energy-saving evaluation method for sail-assisted ships on typical routes is proposed by combining the sailing condition of ships. The case study results show that the energy-saving effect of a wing sail-assisted oil tanker that sailed on the China-to-Middle East route was more than 5.37% in 2021 and could reach 9.54% in a single voyage. It is of great significance to realize the popularization and application of sail-assisted technology, thus improving the greenization of the shipping industry.

ABSTRACT This study focuses on a comparison between different maximum power extraction controls for a small wind turbine application. In this case, a vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) coupled to a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) is used. The analysis is performed for variable winds, so that a real small wind turbine application is simulated. An experimental platform and a wind tunnel are used to recreate the different wind profiles. Diverse controls are compared, a "classical" MPPT, a hybrid Perturb & Observe control and a fuzzy control. Artificial intelligence allows the creation of control algorithms that are not bound by the mechanical parameters of the wind turbine, thus avoiding the need to characterize the wind turbine and define the maximum power curve. It is determined that, for almost constant wind profiles, the hybrid Perturb & Observe extracts more energy. However, for the same profile with greater variability, the fuzzy controller extracts more energy.

Processes for controlling and concentrating where the mechanical energy is produced could be a method of harnessing solar energy and the wind movement, but this process it’s more efficient that Wind turbines that these can only produce electricity when the speed of the oncoming wind is within certain limits. The vortex process is compared with the solar chimney phenomenon which shares the same thermodynamic basis. The physical tube of the solar chimney is replaced with a vortex and the atmospheric boundary layer acts as the solar collector. The article considers the relevance and issues of wind turbine modeling, the principles of wind energy conversion (WEC) system operation, working areas and regulation. The influence of soft computing technologies on the different aspects of wind power systems, particularly in the fields of operation and maintenance, is considered. This article discusses the recent research, development and trends in soft computing techniques for wind-energy-conversion systems. For reliable analysis, the interaction of the wind-generator operation with the atmospheric boundary layer is considered. The authors give a detailed description of the approaches for the study and numerical modeling of the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) in the vicinity of a wind farm. The study of the atmospheric boundary layer in the vicinity of the Ulyanovsk wind farm on the basis of cluster analysis of meteorological data is performed. Ten localizations of ABL homogeneous properties are identified. The subject of the study is the application of the results of cluster analysis to set linguistic variables in fuzzy inference algorithms as well as to adjust the initial conditions in the digital model of a wind generator. The results of cluster analysis made it possible to reasonably construct membership functions for the wind speed value in the fuzzy control algorithm to limit the output power of wind turbines. A simulation of the operation of a three-bladed horizontal type wind turbine for the conditions of one of the resulting clusters is performed, and the main regularities of the flow around the wind turbine are revealed. The results obtained are a valuable source for assessing the mutual influence of wind farms and the environment as well as wind farm site development.

This paper provides a comprehensive summary of the fundamental principles governing four basic working modes of TENGs, elucidating the structures and operational mechanisms of various models employed in wind energy harvesting. Furthermore, it highlights the significance of two major TENG configurations, namely, the vertical touch-separation pattern structure and the independent layer pattern for wind energy collection, emphasizing their respective advantages. Furthermore, the study briefly discusses the current strengths of nano-friction power generation in wind energy harvesting while acknowledging the existing challenges pertaining to device design, durability, operation, and maintenance. The review concludes by presenting potential research directions and prospects for triboelectric nanogenerators generation in the realm of wind energy, offering valuable insights for researchers and scholars in the field.
