Streszczenie:
Contemporary wildlife documentaries, geared for the television market, exhibit a recurrent pattern: their narratives tend to emphasize the predatory pursuit of wild animals. In large part this problem is a consequence of the masculinist and scientistic legacies which wildlife filmmakers have taken over from the natural sciences, in order to seek legitimacy for this genre.1 Other (even contradictory) forces also come into play in the production of wildlife documentaries, namely those arising from commercial demands. The differences between wildlife programming and entertainment specials are at times only ones of modality. Thus, while the contemporary writings of deep ecology and ecofeminism very clearly reflect alternate ideals of human interconnectedness with the nonhuman environment, wildlife documentaries seem compelled to answer to two rather "environmentally unsympathetic" task-masters: objective science and entertainment.

PRESERVING Wildlife: An International Perspective is an anthology of twenty papers exploring the issues related to the preservation of wildlife, with an emphasis on related management approaches. This topic is introduced philosophically with a discussion of moral values associated with human activities. Sport hunting, the medical aid of injured wild animals and the manipulation of wildlife during ecological field studies are discussed within this context. The focus then shifts to a selection of wildlife management strategies including habitat protection, captive breeding, culling of non-native species, eco-tourism and marketing of wildlife products.

Streszczenie:
Abstract Many wild animal populations are considered endangered due to anthropogenic activities. Wildlife and nature habitat preservation requires holistic and science based approaches supported by adequate regulations. One of the means for wildlife preservation is undoubtedly heath monitoring and investigation of infectious diseases of the wild animal populations, particularly if spillover effects are considered. Even though the theoretical background is well researched, implementation of disease prevention and control measures in wildlife populations entails more challenges than in domestic animal populations. Immediate signs of health disorders in wildlife often become evident when the infectious agent is well established in an area. Additionally, due to unrestricted and often long-range movement of wildlife, diseases are easily spread across borders. Brown bears, indigenous in Europe, are classified by EU regulations as endangered, almost extinct and rare. The wild bear population in Bosnia and Herzegovina shares a genetic lineage with bear populations of neighbouring Croatia, Serbia and Montenegro and is one of the few remaining fragments of bear populations in Europe. The aim of this paper is to describe implemented activities for health and telemetric monitoring of wild bears in the Nature Park Skakavac, Canton Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Streszczenie:
This dissertation provides a descriptive-analytic study of the reasons and influences underlying Japan's less than progressive policy record on wildlife preservation, domestically and globally, since 1980. This research is important for a number of reasons, but mainly it helps us to test a number of theoretical models about: policy-making in Japan; Japanese environmental diplomacy; social movements; and corporatism. I hypothesise that apart from a common sense of purpose that binds the different policy actors together, Japan's poor record on wildlife preservation is a derivative of the way environmental NGOs have been marginalised and excluded from the policy process. This hypothesis links to Japan's public safety, and food and economic security concerns whereby these concerns tend to frame and guide policy-making on wildlife and nature issues. Using case study and participant observation methodologies to gather empirical evidence, this dissertation analyses both Japanese state behaviour towards global and domestic wildlife issues, and the changing relationships between the Japanese state, foreign pressure and environmental NGOs, in order to confirm or deny the hypothesis. The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and the Ramsar Convention are the two environmental regimes which provide the context and issues for the analyses. The research concludes that there is convincing evidence to support the hypothesis. The research also reveals the positive, although subtle, sea changes which are occurring in Japanese environmental politics in the light of the continuing changes taking place in both Japan's broader political economy and in the international community.

Streszczenie:
In some cases, preservation priorities and recommendations are based on specific vegetation communities. One example is Fremont Cottonwood-Goodding Willow forests within Pima County, Arizona, which are regarded as critical habitat and protected by the Sonoran Desert Conservation Plan. However, a prioritized system based on conditions within Fremont Cottonwood-Goodding Willow patches may afford greater flexibility to land managers, including selective or incremental preservation, which could accommodate funding challenges. This investigation assessed patches in three watercourses within Tucson, Arizona, and addressed the following questions: Are Fremont Cottonwood-Goodding Willow patches exhibiting characteristics related to vigor or decline? Are there significant relationships between patch vigor and channel variables? On-site assessment addressed Fremont Cottonwood-Goodding Willow patch characteristics and channel variables. Significant relationships were found between vigor and proximity of primary flow, channel width, and bank treatment. Vigor results were employed to develop recommendations designed to facilitate preservation decisions.

Charon's Garden Wilderness Area within the Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge in Oklahoma is a landscape that is granted federal protection through the Wilderness Act of 1964. The discourse of wilderness management is influenced by governmental policies and practice which organize knowledge surrounding the natural landscape, like with the formation and semantics of the Wilderness Act. The Wilderness Act establishes characteristics that are designed to monitor and control the landscape and serve as a baseline and criterion for further wilderness preservation. These characteristics render the wilderness space as governable. Conservation management alternatives are identified which bypass the duality of nature from western society suggested by the discourse of environmental policy. These alternatives are understood under two notions of behaviors and perceptions. The project's goal is to uncover wilderness users' recreation behaviors and perceptions of wilderness as a designated space. Through understanding and assessing user's behaviors and perception of wilderness, alternative policies and practices that offer sustainable management practices and recreation opportunities can be developed.

Vacar, Iulia Madalina. "A collective “Personality Right” in favour of wildlife species : on how we can achieve sustainable financing for biodiversity preservation". Master's thesis, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.14/34792.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
Biomass studies from 2018 show that 96% of the mass of all mammals on Earth is composed of humans and their livestock, while all wild mammals together account for only 4%. 70% of the mass of all birds on Earth are those domesticated, mainly chickens. We are facing a biodiversity disaster, in the context of an environmental and climate emergency. Traditional sources of conservation financing through tourism, philanthropist and donor agencies cannot keep up with the needs of local communities in order to preserve the remaining wildlife. While tourism provides much needed revenues, it has in itself a quite high carbon footprint, and it is not a constant, reliable source in the case of travel restrictions associated with a pandemic. In recent years, there have been some new financing initiatives that could incentivize the corporate world to contribute to wildlife conservation such as the Lion’s Share fund and Rhino bonds, which for the time being have not delivered results at the needed scale. What we propose goes a step further. Recognizing collective “personality rights’’ to wildlife, triggering the payment of a 0.5% royalty fee on all products coming from companies that use wildlife logos, wildlife images on their products or in their advertising campaigns, would make a great contribution towards preserving those species while having a low impact on companies’ profits and on the environment. All revenues are to be collected into a worldwide fund, via subsidiary national agencies. They will be distributed following a destination principle, to the local communities most closely related to the respective wildlife species used on the product, so that locals can see a direct link between wildlife preservation and their welfare. This way, these often poor communities will not be tempted to raise herds, to cultivate land used by wildlife, to support poachers or to allow trophy hunting. Biodiversity-rich, healthy ecosystems will thus ensure that both people and wildlife can thrive.

Streszczenie:
The citizens nowadays are often born and raised in well developed urban areas and have rarely, even never experienced the difficulties that wildlife are suffering from due to human actions. They are likely to possess sympathy, but never do these individuals are aware of how their deeds may affect the living of other species on planet Earth [1]. However, if someone reveals the bloody truth to the people, they are likely to change for the greater good. In this paper, we mainly used unity modeling and java programming skills to develop an animal simulation game in order to show the damage done by mankind and resonate the feeling of empathy so the players may alter their actions to preserve the environment [2][3]. The player starts the game as an animal figure in a randomly generated map. The player will control the animal to move around to consume water and food for survival. Meanwhile, the animal must avoid the invasion of human poison lands closing in on the habitats for this figure. Eventually, the player will starve or be poisoned and fail to survive. By setting this result, we hope to arouse the sympathy in hearts and lead to some alteration to a person’s habits.

Streszczenie:
Commissioned in 1914 as the most powerful weapon in the world, the Battleship TEXAS (BB-35) is the last surviving Dreadnought and the only battleship left in existence today, which fought in both World War I and World War II. Time and nature have taken a major structural toll on the ship; she is in immediate need of critical repairs, as well as a long-term solution for her continued preservation. Although a major shell restoration project was completed in 1990, the internal structure of the inner bottom has continued to deteriorate. In 2012, Texas Parks and Wildlife issued a Request for Proposals to solicit bids to perform an in-situ repair of the deteriorated frames, longitudinals, and inner-bottom plating. This phase of structural repairs is largely complete and has employed some novel techniques to restore the strength of the structural members while retaining as much of the historic fabric as possible. Additionally, the restoration presented an unusual scenario of needing to support the original triple expansion steam engines from overhead deck structure while renewing the foundation supports. This paper will describe the engine support system and the structural analysis used to design the system as well as details of the repair procedures to replacing or doubling the existing keel, longitudinals, and framing throughout the aft end of the ship
