This study has as its aim the analysis of the play The Importance of Being Earnest (2007), written by Oscar Wilde (1854-1900), in accordance with the aesthetic theoretical perspective, of which Wilde was a major exponent. A method of analogical comparison was utilised, contrasting Oscar Wilde’s theory, taken from some of his critical essays, with the text of the play The Importance of Being Earnest, as a representation of his dramaturgy in practice. The theoretical and critical texts by Wilde were chosen according to the aims of this proposal, the most relevant being: “The Critic as Artist”, “The Decay of Lying”, “The Truth of Masks” and “Pen, Pencil and Poison”, all of which were published together in the book Intentions, republished in Oscar Wilde’s Complete Works (2007). The research moved from the theoretical conceptions of the Aesthetic Movement (general) to the aesthetic conceptions found in Wilde’s articles (specific), therefore the aforementioned essays are used as the aesthetic theoretical approach which was chosen to lead the research. Considering that the main theorist of the Aesthetic Movement was Walter Pater (1839 – 1894), his works, Appreciations, with an Essay on Style (1889) and The Renaissance: Studies in Art and Poetry (1873), were analysed in order to clarify the theoretical premises of the Aesthetic Movement and which of these are shared with Oscar Wilde. Taking these conjectures as a starting point, the impact of these theoretical concepts on Wilde’s practice was then analysed

Pełny tekst źródłaEleven out of the twelve novels that Willa Cather wrote, that is all but the last one, depict the movement in search of culture, self-fulfillment and a place away from the small town life of the Midwest. In spite of the beauty of the landscape the only solution is escape to the big cities of the eastern seaboard and often further east to Europe. The characters' attraction to the east is bound up with the author's love of France. The numerous references to this country throughout the canon (the 'Frenchness') attest to the belief in the supremacy of French culture which comes to its head in Death Comes for the Archbishop and Shadows on the Rock. The journey of quest is often undertaken by characters whose childhood has been influenced by the presence of European immigrants. The basis of the movement from west to east, occasionally with a return to the west, is the transcription of Cather's own experience as an immigrant in Nebraska. This original displacement and the new surroundings marked her life and her writing. The desire for something else, and the longing and restlessness the protagonists experience create the current of nostalgia tangible throughout all the novels. Even when they succeed professionally they cannot help wondering if their movement has been worth the sacrifice. While expounding the need for the possibility to give vent to one's creative nature, in the end Cather questions whether departure is a prerequisite to one's fulfillment. In Lucy Gayheart she suggests the answer

Pełny tekst źródłaSet against the political backdrop of the boycotts, arson and funerals of July 1980 in Grahamstown, this novel explores how the discovery of the dead body of a street child under the walls of St Jude’s Chapel sets events in motion that provoke the spiritual crises faced by the two protagonists. Father Philip Riley, the non-stipendiary curate at St Jude’s who had come to South Africa as a missionary inspired by Trevor Huddleston, has over the years lost any sense of his priestly vocation and his own personal beliefs. Lieutenant Daniel Broughton of the Grahamstown CID has to solve the mystery of the boy’s death, but he too has lost his idealism following a career in the South African Police that began at Sharpeville, and now hovers in a dead-end position in Grahamstown. Both these men have to come to terms with what the death of the street child requires of them. Riley has to overcome his reluctance to give the child a proper burial, and Broughton has to dig deeper than he is initially willing to, to determine how the child died. As the story unfolds, details emerge which thwart the opening attempts by both men to deflect any responsibility for the child from themselves. Riley had started life in an orphanage, and had been forced into colluding with the supervisor to cover up the cause of death of one of the orphans. He is challenged by the selfless love shown for the child by Mrs Mabata, a parishioner at St Jude’s who had tried to foster the street child. He realises that his reluctance to engage with the situation has to do with denying his own failures, based on his own life story. Giving in to pressure from a Roman Catholic priest to carry out the funeral, he discovers an inner strength to defy a police order not to conduct the funeral. The funeral goes ahead successfully, and Riley experiences moments of transcendence that allow him to re-discover his vocation. On the other hand, Broughton discovers that the street child’s involvement as an informer for the Security Police had been the cause of his death.

This work aims study the trajectory of playwright Zeno Wilde (1947-1998) from the analysis of a selection of the author plays with emphasis on Blue Jeans (1980), drama lived by young transvestites and hustlers, who opted for the nightlife prostitution as an alternative survival. Apart from Blue Jeans (1980), whose relevance was essential to consolidate the dramaturgical scenario, the later writings of the author, nine were commented plays in this work, namely: Uma lição longe demais (1986), Anjos da Guarda (1987), Salve o Prazer (1992), A segunda morte de Pedro e Paulo (1996), Os olhos cor de mel de James Dean (1992), Zero de Conduta (1993), Quem te fez saber que estavas nu?(1989), Ritos de infância (1988) e Sabe quem dançou?(1990) .Divided into two chapters, this research brings primarily a reflection on what is marginality, contextualizing it in Brazilian theater for later review 80, bringing questions about whether the decade was, in fact, "lost " or is meant a plurality of trends arising from the numerous transformations that the time spent. Parts are discussed sequentially Blue Jeans (1980), Uma lição longe demais (1986) e Anjos da Guarda (1987), in the first chapter. The second chapter aims at tracing the experiences of Zeno Wilde with other universes to merge, the plays, the theme already present in the marginal parts of the first chapter, however, with references to the movies (James Dean and Pasolini), music (Assis Valente), the theater itself (Nelson Rodrigues) and other topics discussed. Taking as its starting point the analysis of Zeno´s plays, this work comments the theatrical production of the author and his position in the national drama, considering the theatrical text as an important tool for reading, analysis and interpretation of literary genre considering the political, artistic and cultural Brazilian events from 80s to 90s of the twentieth century. For the Brazilian drama 80s, the work of critics such as Alberto Guzik and Fauzi Arap are of great value and are present in this research, beyond thinking of authors like Sabato Magaldi and Silviano Santiago. About contextualization and understanding of modernity and its consequences, there are important contributions of theorists such as Fredric Jameson, Stuart Hall, Nestor Garcia Canclini, Beatriz Sarlo, Marshall Berman and Zygmunt Bauman
