There has been a considerable amount of research in the area of network performance evaluation. However, little of the research is focused on the evaluation of real-time safety-critical WANs, a need that motivated this research. Over the years, networks have been evaluated by different disciplines from different perspectives. Many of these evaluations focus on network technical performance, or an organization's performance when using a network, or individual users' performance when using a network. In this study, network performance was measured using empirical data from an operational WAN and by utilizing well-defined and well-known network performance metrics such as reliability, availability, and response time. In general, increased use of a real-time WAN in this study was associated with negative impacts on WAN performance and increased redundancy was generally associated with positive impacts, allowing greater system usage and higher network workload, as intended. The impacts of increasing redundancy on MTBF were mixed, as were the MTTR impacts; availability values varied considerably by port. The network performance data thus shows mixed empirical results from increases in network usage and redundancy, which highlights the importance of managing and measuring network performance at both the system and the local level.

This report focusses on the planning and realization of an interdisciplinary local area network (LAN) for medical research at the University of Heidelberg. After a detailed requirements analysis, several networks were evaluated by means of a test installation, and a cost-performance analysis was carried out. At present, the LAN connects 45 (IBM-compatible) PCs, several heterogeneous mainframes (IBM, DEC and Siemens) and provides access to the public X.25 network and to wide-area networks for research (EARN, BITNET). The network supports application software that is frequently needed in medical research (word processing, statistics, graphics, literature databases and services, etc.). Compliance with existing “official” (e.g., IEEE 802.3) and “de facto” standards (e.g., PostScript) was considered to be extremely important for the selection of both hardware and software. Customized programs were developed to improve access control, user interface and on-line help. Wide acceptance of the LAN was achieved through extensive education and maintenance facilities, e.g., teaching courses, customized manuals and a hotline service. Since requirements of clinical routine differ substantially from medical research needs, two separate networks (with a gateway in between) are proposed as a solution to optimally satisfy the users’ demands.

Background/Objectives: For data center-based enterprises, the use of data traffic continues to increase. As a result, the increasingly efficient processing of increasing data traffic is becoming a major issue. Effective processing of traffic can be performed through the addition of physical network equipment, but this requires considerable costs.Methods/Statistical analysis: To solve this problem, researches on server virtualization and network virtualization technology are being actively conducted. However, while network virtualization is a cost-effective solution, open-source virtual switches used in network virtualization technologies have the performance penalty because they handle packets at the kernel of server's operating system. As a result, the Intel has developed the Data Plane Development Kit (DPDK) technology to address the performance degradation of the operating system.Findings: In this paper, we propose the DPDK performance test environment based on Open Virtual Switch (OVS) to verify the stability and performance of the DPDK-oriented virtualization technology, in association with a new KREONET-S project which aims tothe softwarization of the Korea Research Environment Open Network (KREONET) infrastructure.Improvements/Applications: We perform conducted experiments on Software-Defined Local Area Network (LAN) and Wide Area Network (WAN) environment using KREONET-S show the result.

This article discusses the stages of development, characteristics of a wireless local area network Wi-Fi, options for its topology and equipment used. Currently, there are such different types of wireless networks as Wireless Wide Area Network, Wireless Metropolitan Area Networks (Wireless Neighborhood Area Network), Wireless Local Area Network, Wireless Personal Area Network. Each of the listed wireless networks has its own specific range and application. Wireless LAN Wi-Fi refers to the Wireless Local Area Network. The first wireless LAN standard, Wi-Fi, was approved in 1997. From the moment of their appearance to the present day, the following standards of this network have appeared: 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11n, 802.11ac, 802.11ad, 802.11ax. For each standard, the speeds and frequency ranges at which the data transmission was carried out are indicated, and the technologies on which they are built are described. Wireless LAN Wi-Fi has three topologies: 1) Ad-Hoc (point-to-point) or Independent Basic Service Set; 2) Basic Service Set (“client / server”) and 3) Extended Service Set (“extended service areas”). To build a Wi-Fi network, network adapters, access points, routers, ADSL modems, Wi-Fi phones, Wi-Fi antennas, Wi-Fi repeaters are used. Wi-Fi adapters are used by devices that do not have a built-in Wi-Fi module. Wi-Fi access points are designed for organizing wireless access within a local network. Wi-Fi routers are designed to route traffic on a computer network. ADSL modems are used to access the Internet over a telephone line. Wi-Fi repeaters are used to expand the coverage of a wireless network using already installed equipment. Wi-Fi phones are wireless IP phones. Wi-Fi antennas are used to extend the range of a wireless network.

Error is an important problem in communication that occurs in shared networks when a packet fails to arrive at the destination or it arrives at the destination but some of the bits are in error or have been altered. In typical packet switched wide area networks, this can occur quite easily when output links are slower than inputs and multiple traffic sources competing for same output link at the same time. Typical for packet switched WAN, the packet transmit input/output buffer and queue of the network devices in their way towards the destination. Moreover, these networks are characterized by the fact that packets often arrive in “burst”. The buffers in the network devices are intended to assimilate these traffic hosts until they can be processed. Nevertheless, the available buffers in the network nodes may fill up rapidly if the network traffic is too high which in turn may lead to discarded packets. The situation cannot be avoided by increasing the size of the buffers, since unreasonable buffer size will lead to excessive end-to-end (e2e) delay. A typical scenario for congestion occurs where multiple incoming link feed into single outgoing link (e.g several Local Area Networks connected to Wide Area Networks). The routers of the networks are highly susceptible for traffic congestion because they are too small for the amount of traffic required to handle. This paper presented general concepts of Error Control and its mechanisms and its application to packet switched wide area networks An improved model was proposed with reduced error while transmitting packets from one channel to the other. Simulating the model for reducing error control in packet switched wide area networks increased the number of messages, reduced response time used in transmitting and receiving packets, reduced network utilization.

The need for information and communication has become a fundamental thing in human life, marked by the increasing human activity that no longer sees the distance and time to communicate with and share information. In 1960, the US Department of Defense conducted research on computer networks. Research carried out is to build a computer network with a method that mimics the workings of the telephone network, where one computer can be connected to other computers, both in one location or area known as a Local Area Network (LAN), and even can be connected to a place or a different country known as a Wide Area Network (WAN). LAN limitations give birth to a VLAN technology that allows for the configuration of a virtualized computer network. The higher the level of demand and the increase in computer network users resulting in broadcasts and traffic on the network itself. The current condition of PT. EDS Manufacturing Indonesia does not yet have a computer network concept that is in line with company needs, computer network activities that occur every day require concepts that are appropriate to the company. Then it is necessary to design a VLAN concept that is expected to provide better results and make it easier for IP Address segmentation to manage broadcast and traffic on a computer network.

The main objective of this paper is to report the small signal stability analysis of Vietnam Power System which has a longitudinal network structure with the consideration of power system stabilizer (PSS) in operation to enhance the damping of inter-area oscillation by using local as well as remote feedback signals via phasor measurement unit (PMU). Both methods of frequency domain and time domain analyses are used to investigate the performance of the power system. The study results show that by proper selection of PSS installation locations and remote feedback signals, power oscillations on the tie-line will be reduced and the system stability is thus improved.

The traditional automatic switchover device installed in substation only uses local real-time information to make control strategies, with the logic of device predetermined, so it could not adapt to different operating modes. A new wide-area automatic switchover system based on energy manage system (EMS) is proposed in the paper. The wide-area automatic switchover modeling is established through automated modeling and the real-time rest oration control is implemented. The system solves the power supply restore under serial single power supply failure. By comprehensive use of information of the whole network, the automatic switchover can coordinate with other automatic security devices and protections. In addition, the control strategies and network security will be checked and modified in order to prevent from overload and improve security of automatic switchover strategies. The system has been used in Guangdong power grid of China.

In this paper we present a wide area tracking system based on consumer hardware and available motion capture modules and middleware. We are using multiple depth cameras for human pose tracking in order to increase the captured space. Commercially available cameras can capture human movements in a non-intrusive way, while associated software-modules produce pose information of a simplified skeleton model. We calibrate the cameras relatively to each other to seamlessly combine their tracking data. Our design allows an arbitrary number of sensors to be integrated and used in parallel over a local area network. This enables us to capture human movements in a large arbitrarily shaped area. In addition we can improve motion capture data in regions, where the field of view of multiple cameras overlaps, by mutually completing partly occluded poses. In various examples we demonstrate, how human pose data is being merged in order to cover a wide area and how this data can easily be used for character animation in a virtual environment.

Recently, wide area Ethernet, which provides virtual connections between company branches by using Ethernet technology, has become wide spread. Ethernet originally lacked fault recovery mechanisms required in wide area networks (WANs) since it originated as local area network (LAN) technology. Protection mechanism against link or node failure is proposed in Ethernet network, but many frame losses are inevitable during the switch over to the backup path. Therefore, to improve reliability of wide area Ethernet, a fault recovery method with few frame losses is required. This paper proposes a fast fault recovery method for reducing frame losses during the switching over to another route. To achieve fast recovery, a pre-established forwarding table is introduced, which is searched when a fault occurs and frames are forwarded. This paper also proposes a bandwidth control function to guarantee the quality of service of connections that do not use the failed link when a fault occurs. A computer simulation showed that by adding the proposed fault recovery method to the conventional protection method, frame losses can be decreased. The proposed fault recovery method was implemented on a software switch framework to confirm its effectiveness.

Abstract Influenced by the continuous growth of renewable energy installation scale and the increasingly prominent characteristics of AC/DC hybrid structure, the disturbance behavior of large power grid is becoming more and more complex. To ensure the safety of power grid, higher requirements are put forward for the reliability, accuracy and orderliness of the out-of-step splitting control which is belonged to the third line of defense. Firstly, this paper analyzes the principle and application limitation of out-of-step splitting control of ucosφ based on local measurement information, studies the relationship and error between ucosφ and oscillation center, and the location coefficient ζ of oscillation center is defined. On this basis, the criteria of branch splitting and the control strategy of multi-branch wide area cooperative out-of-step splitting are proposed. The simulation results of AC and HVDC hybrid power grid show that the proposed strategy can adapt to the complex dynamic behavior of large power grid in which multiple generator clusters lose synchronization one after another, accurately identify the cutset corresponding to the out-of-step generator cluster, and realize the unified and orderly splitting of each branch in the cutset.

By using the absolute moments of aggregate traffic measurements, we conclude that measured local-area network (LAN) and wide-area network (WAN) traffic traces, with the sample means subtracted, are well modeled by random processes that are either exactly or asymptotically self-similar.

Automatic means to manage the security in moderate and large networks are of extreme importance to avoid error-prone manual techniques. This paper paves the way to develop an automatic network security management (NSM) system that is both flexible in deciding the system’s objectives and efficient in using the valuable network bandwidth with a relatively low transmission overhead. The required flexibility and efficiency are obtained using mobile agents (MA) to collect the required security information from various network components and devices, and using ontology to specify the required security policies in such a way understandable by the MA’s software. A simplified NSM prototype is developed, implemented, and tested over a typical local area network to investigate the validity of the suggested ideas. The MA travels through the network and collects the necessary information using an ontology-based security policy. Next, it may either return back to the network administrator to let him decide and perform the suitable actions, or alternatively the MA may take the appropriate decisions. This prototype is tested to examine its functionality and performance using a simple local area network consisting of three computers with different configurations. The developed MA was able to understand the ontology and move around the network. It has properly detected the components that are wrongly configured. It should be made clear that the design is scalable and can be directly applied to more computers in a local area network or even in a wide area network.

In this paper, we construct a model to evaluate the street network accessibility for wide-area emergency behaviors under the condition of property damage in the Tokyo Metropolitan Area after a large earthquake. The user terminal has to select the best access technology among Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN), Wireless Wide Area Network (WWAN), and Universal Mobile Telecommunication Systems (UMTS) etc. at its current location. Thus, selecting the appropriate RAT and cell becomes a complex problem in heterogeneous network due to number of variables involved in the selection process. The main objective of this work in the heterogeneous networks is to maximize the percentage of satisfied users who are assigned to the networks. Henceforth, this paper presents an innovative mechanism for the selection of heterogeneous networks such as WWAN and WLAN. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated using 1000 datasets. From the simulation results, it is found that the proposed algorithm gives highest probability for mobile user satisfaction than the existing methods.

The Campus Local Area Network (CLAN) of academic institutions interconnect computers ranging from one hundred to about twenty five hundred and these computers are located in academic building(s), hostel building(s), faculty quarter(s), students amenities centre, etc all around the campus. The students, faculty and the supporting staff members use the network primarily for internet usage at both personal and professional levels and secondarily for usage of the available services and resources. Various web based services viz: Web Services, Mail Services, DNS, and FTP services are generally made available in the campus LAN. Apart from these services various intranet based services are also made available for the users of the LAN. Campus LAN users from the hostels change very frequently and also sometime become targets (we call as soft targets) to the attackers or zombie because of either inadequate knowledge to protect their own computer/ laptop, which is also a legitimate node of the campus LAN; or their enthusiastic nature of experimentation. The interconnectivity of these legitimates nodes of the campus LAN and that of the attackers in the World Wide Web, make the computers connected in the LAN (nodes) an easy target for malicious users who attempt to exhaust the resources by launching Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks. In this paper we present a technique to mitigate the distributed denial of service attacks in campus wide LAN by limiting the bandwidth of the affected computers (soft targets) of the virtual LAN from a unified threat management (UTM) firewall. The technique is supported with help of bandwidth utilization report of the campus LAN with and without implementation of bandwidth limiting rule; obtained from the UTM network traffic analyzer. The graphical analyzer report on the utilization of the bandwidth with transmitting and receiving bits of the campus LAN after implementation of our bandwidth limiting rule is also given.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to develop an adaptive fuzzy controller for STATCOM to damp low-frequency inter-area oscillation over wide operating range using wide area signals in multimachine power system. Design/methodology/approach In this paper tuneable fuzzy model is proposed where the parameters of the fuzzy inference system are tuned by using the adaptive characteristic of the artificial neural network. Based on back propagation algorithm and method of least square estimation, the fuzzy inference rule base is tweaked according to the data from which they are modelled. The wide area control signals, for the proposed controller, available in the power system are selected on the basis of eigenvalue sensitivity defined in terms of participation factor. Findings The effectiveness of the proposed controller with wide area signals is tested on two test cases, namely, two area network and IEEE 12 bus benchmark system. The comparative analysis of the proposed adaptive fuzzy controller is carried out with conventional STATCOM controller along with fuzzy-and neural-based supplementary controller all using selected wide area signals. The results show that neural network tuned fuzzy controller leads to better system identification and have enhanced damping characteristics over wide operating range. Originality/value In the available literature, numerous researchers have indicated the use of fuzzy logic controller and neural controller along with their hybrid schemes as STATCOM controller for improving the dynamics of the multimachine power system using local signals. The main contribution of the paper is in using the hybrid intelligent control scheme for STATCOM using wide area signals. The advantage of proposed scheme is that the performance of well-designed fuzzy system can be enhanced with the same training data that are used for designing a neural controller thus giving enhanced performance in comparison to individual intelligent control scheme.

Transferring a local manufacturing company to a national-wide supply chain network with wholesalers and retailers is a significant problem in manufacturing systems. In this research, a hybrid PCA-K-means is used to transfer a local chocolate manufacturing firm near Kuala Lumpur into a national-wide supply chain. For this purpose, the appropriate locations of the wholesaler’s center points were found according to the geographical and population features of the markets in Malaysia. To this end, four wholesalers on the left island of Malaysia are recognized, which were located in the north area, right area, middle area, and south area. Similarly, two wholesalers were identified on the right island, which were in Sarawak and WP Labuan. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed method, its outcomes are compared with other unsupervised-learning methods such as the WARD and CLINK methods. The outcomes indicated that K-means could successfully determine the best locations for the wholesalers in the supply chain network with a higher score (0.812).

A routing protocol is very important to keep communication quality over radio multihop communications because radio waves are impacted much by surrounding environment. When we use multiuser shared applications like a video conference and an IP phone, it is predicted that large amount of traffic flows on network. Therefore, we should consider network loads to use these applications. In this paper, we propose a multicast routing protocol for WMNs which considers network loads and hop count. Furthermore, we evaluate performance by simulation. In the simulation results, we show that the proposed protocol has better performance than a conventional protocol (MAODV) at high loaded scenario.

In this paper we are presenting a novel approach that enables the rendering of large-shared datasets at interactive rates using inexpensive workstations. Our algorithm is based on view-dependent rendering and client-server technology — servers host large datasets and manage the selection of the various levels of detail, while clients receive blocks of update operations which are used to generate the appropriate level of detail in an incremental manner. We assume that servers are capable machines in terms of storage capacity and computational power and clients are inexpensive workstations which have limited 3D rendering capabilities. For optimization purposes we have developed two similar approaches — one for local area networks and the other for wide area networks. For the second approach we have performed several changes to adapt to the limitation of the wide area networks. To avoid network latency we have developed two powerful mechanisms that cache the adapt operation blocks on the clients' side and predict the future view-parameters of clients based on their recent behavior. Our approach dramatically reduces the amount of memory used by each client and the entire computing system since the dataset is stored only once in the local memory of the server. In addition, it decreases the load on the network as a result of the incremental update contributed by view-dependent rendering.

The mobile data traffic growth and the high fraction of indoor-generated traffic push mobile operators to devise new deployment strategies such as mobile network offloading. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the energy consumption and the deployment cost, based on the demanded traffic level, for a joint macro-femtocell network which enables mobile network offloading in Helsinki Metropolitan Area by 2015. This deployment is compared to an optimized only macro cellular network. The study tries to resolve under what conditions, in terms of demanded traffic, deployment cost and energy consumption, a mobile operator should deploy femtocells. Assuming that only the new network infrastructure is installed by 2015, the results show that wide-to-local area offloading is beneficial for a mobile operator to handle the mobile data traffic growth, reduce the deployment costs and the energy consumption of the radio access network.

Abstract We developed BRITE (Bringing Resources and Information to Employees), an expert information retrieval system, for problem solving and retrieving technical product information. Specialists in our Technical Assistance Center (TAC) use the BRITE system on a Pentium workstation to access information in < 3 s. Manuals, technical bulletins, parts lists, and administrative tools such as word processing and network fax are available electronically. The system allows consistent troubleshooting and definition of customers' problems by TAC specialists. BRITE seamlessly integrates expert system, document retrieval, and relational database technologies; the system runs on a token ring local area network, which is part of a Ciba Corning Diagnostics wide area network. Information received over the wide area network is used to develop and update BRITE daily. BRITE is kept current by input or troubleshooting and new applications from TAC specialists.

The novel CPW antenna design consists of monopole, which can used for High speed wide area or local area corporate networks and Video & CCTV surveillance networks and Long-range Rural connectivity. This antenna has been designed with design size parameters of 59.5(L) x 30 (W) x 1.6-(H) mm2, the dielectric constant of FR4 substrate is 4.4, and loss tangent of 0.002 is used. The resonant frequency range of this proposed antenna is 5.85 - 6.6 GHz with return loss above of -10dB achieved. The peak gain of this antenna is 5.5dBi and in addition the S, Z-parameters, VSWR, 2D & 3D radiation pattern are also derived. Good results are achieved after simulation.

Local Access Networks (LACNs) are often considered the "last mile" over the Internet provided that they are connected to some existing Wide Area Network backbone. In this paper, a revised LACN-WAN interconnection model is presented as an extension to the conventional Capacitated Concentrator Location Problem (CCLP). An efficient heuristic is also developed to seek near-optimal deployment of telecommunication devices (e.g. links, concentrators, etc.) while minimizing the total connection costs for the network interconnection. Our solution algorithm could serve as a decision-making tool in solving problems with a real world size (i.e. 120 nodes and 30 concentrators).

AbstractMultidisciplinary approaches to managing seascapes are increasingly being recognized as best practice and therefore prioritized by conservation agencies. For most coastal areas the strengthening of customary marine tenure, rules and regulations should yield even greater biodiversity and livelihood benefits. Here, we present the conservation planning results from a locally-managed marine area programme initiated by the Government of Aceh, Indonesia, which aimed to empower coastal communities to sustainably and equitably manage marine resources with local government. In 2008 the government established a Marine and Fisheries Task Force to identify priority areas for marine biodiversity (through systematic conservation planning) and coastal communities (through participatory planning). In addition to the existing 264,788 ha of marine management units, systematic planning identified another 53,372 ha. However, the subsequent stakeholder participation phase, involving intensive local consultations, further expanded the locally-managed marine area network by 6,725 ha and to a total of 23 locally-managed marine areas. This combined approach had additional benefits because it generated a strong sense of local ownership. For communities it initiated a process for recognizing their customary claimed areas and resolved overlapping boundaries between neighbouring communities, thereby reducing the likelihood of future conflicts over natural resource use. For government, it provided the basis of a robust governance system, with 34 new or revised decrees being completed and an additional USD 1.6 million being allocated for implementation of locally-managed marine areas. This participatory approach should considerably increase the successful delivery of a sustainable and equitable locally-managed marine area network for Aceh, which has wide application for the South-east Asian region and beyond.

A power grid is a network that carries electrical energy from power plants to customer premises. One existing power grid is going through a massive and revolutionary transformation process. It is envisioned to achieve the true meaning of technology as “technology for all.” Smart grid technology is an inventive and futuristic approach for improvement in existing power grids. Amalgamation of existing electrical infrastructure with information and communication network is an inevitable requirement of smart grid deployment and operation. The key characteristics of smart grid technology are full duplex communication, advanced metering infrastructure, integration of renewable and alternative energy resources, distribution automation and absolute monitoring, and control of the entire power grid. Smart grid communication infrastructure consists of heterogeneous and hierarchical communication networks. Various layers of smart grid deployment involve diverse sets of wired and wireless communication standards. Application of smart grids can be realized in the facets of energy utilization. Smart grid communication architecture can be used to explore intelligent agriculture applications for the proficient nurturing of various crops. The utilization, monitoring, and control of various renewable energy resources are the most prominent features of smart grid infrastructure for agriculture applications. This paper describes an implementation of an IoT-based wireless energy management system and the monitoring of weather parameters using a smart grid communication infrastructure. A graphical user interface and dedicated website was developed for real-time execution of the developed prototype. The prototype described in this paper covers a pervasive communication infrastructure for field area networks. The design was validated by testing the developed prototype. For practical implementation of the monitoring of the field area network, multiple sensors units were placed for data collection for better accuracy and the avoidance of estimation error. The developed design uses one sensor and tested it for IoT applications. The prototype was validated for local and wide area networks. Most of the present literature depicts a design of various systems using protocols such as IEEE 802.15.1 and IEEE 802.15.4, which either provide restricted access in terms of area or have lower data rates. The protocols used in developed system such as IEEE 802.11 and IEEE 802.3 provide ubiquitous coverage as well as high data rates. These are well-established and proven protocols for Internet applications and data communication but less explored for smart grid applications. The work depicted in this paper provides a solution for all three smart grid hierarchical networks such as home/field area networks, neighborhood area networks, and wide area networks using prototype development and testing. It lays a foundation for actual network design and implementation. The designed system can be extended for multiple sensor nodes for practical implementation in field area networks for better accuracy and in the case of node failure.

This article aimed to disclose Smart Grid communication in a logical way to facilitate the understanding of each component function. The study was focused on the improvement, advantages, common used design, and possible feature of Smart Grid communication components. The results of the study divide the Smart Grid communication application into two main category i.e. measurement equipment and network architecture. Measurement equipment consists of Advance Metering Infrastructure, Phasor Measurement Unit, Intelligent Electronic Devices, and Wide Area Measurement System. The network architecture is divided based on three hierarchies; local area network for 1 to 100 m with 100 kbps data rate, neighbour area network for 100 m to 10 km with 100 Mbps data rate, and wide area network for up to 100 km with 1 Gbps data rate. More information is provided regarding the routing protocol for each network from various available protocols. The final section presents the energy and data flow architecture for Smart Grid implementation based on the measurement equipment and the network suitability. This article is expected to provide a comprehensive guide and comparison surrounding the technologies supporting Smart Grid implementation especially on communication applications.

Purpose – Mobile data traffic globally is increasing rapidly in both enterprise and consumer segments. The purpose of this paper is to identify a new network architecture and opportunity that support ubiquitous mobile work for higher-education institutions. Design/methodology/approach – It reviews existing literature and enabling technologies and proposes integrating both wide-area Long Term Evolution-Advanced (LTE-Advanced) and local-area IEEE 802.11ac networks for seamless, gigabit-speed services. A decision framework for moving toward such architecture and a cost/benefit analysis are also presented. Findings – Integrating both LTE-Advanced and IEEE 802.11ac networks for seamless connectivity is technically and organizationally feasible, provided that a higher-education institution has faculty and staff that require locational and interactional mobility. The cost/benefit analysis also shows that moving to the new architecture has potential benefits that can accrue to the higher-education institution. Research limitations/implications – With the coming availability of these wide-area and local-area gigabit networks, a new architecture that can ubiquitously supports mobile workers may be advantageous to universities and colleges. Originality/value – To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this paper is one of the first that proposes such integrated architecture in the context of higher-education institutions. In addition to the examination of technological issues and proposed architecture, the decision framework, and cost/benefit analysis should be valuable for institutions contemplating the move toward the new architecture and for guiding further research in this area.

We introduce optimization through protocol selection (OPS) as a technique to improve bulk-data transfer on shared wide-area networks (WANs). Instead of just fine-tuning the parameters of a network protocol, our empirical results show that the selection of the protocol itself can result in up to four times higher throughput in some key cases. However, OPS for the foreground traffic (e.g., TCP CUBIC, TCP BBR, UDT) depends on knowledge about the network protocols used by the background traffic (i.e., other users). Therefore, we build and empirically evaluate several machine-learned (ML) classifiers, trained on local round-trip time (RTT) time-series data gathered using active probing, to recognize the mix of network protocols in the background with an accuracy of up to 0.96.

Ultra-Large Band (UWB) is a radio technology used for the transmission and distribution of radio energy over a wide frequency band with low power spectral density. A newer UWB Microstrip patch antenna is designed using a jute material as a substrate because of its durability and CO2 and water footprint. The ecological impact is relatively small with Cradle to Cradle, biodegradable with 100% compostable, and extremely strong. The jute substrate is reinforced to make it nonflexible and hydrophobic for further better electrical and mechanical properties, and it is treated with the conductive polymer sodium alginate; the results were compared with the raw hydrophilic jute substrate. The proposed antenna design and results were compared with the similar antenna using the FR4 substrate of a dielectric constant of 4.4 and a thickness of 1.6, and the ultra-wideband spectrum range from 3.1 to 10.6 GHz. It is used for both uplink and downlink transmission of local area network (LAN), wide area network (WAN), and satellite communications spectrum (SCP). The performance of this network provides a wider bandwidth transmission for the range of 1 to 14 GHz applications.

Much research effort has been conducted to introduce intelligence into communication networks in order to enhance network performance. Communication networks, both wired and wireless, are ever-expanding as more devices are increasingly connected to the Internet. This survey introduces machine learning and the motivations behind it for creating cognitive networks. We then discuss machine learning and statistical techniques to predict future traffic and classify each into short-term or long-term applications. Furthermore, techniques are sub-categorized into their usability in Local or Wide Area Networks. This paper aims to consolidate and present an overview of existing techniques to stimulate further applications in real-world networks.

Abstract In order to ensure the quality of tobacco products, it is necessary to strictly control the environment of tobacco during storage. In order to save manpower and material resources and realize accurate monitoring of the storage environment, a large-scale tobacco storage monitoring system based on heterogeneous network was designed. Combining the cross-regional characteristics of NB-IoT and low-frequency characteristics of LoRa, NB-IoT was used as a wide area network and LoRa as a subordinate local area network to form a two-layer network structure. Its structure includes sensor node and gateway node, and the gateway node is composed of LoRa gateway and NB-IoT module. This paper introduces the composition and working mode of each part in detail.

This paper outlines a methodology to determine the amount of renewable energy that can be accommodated in a power system before adverse impacts such as over-voltage, over-loading and system instability occur. This value is commonly known as hosting capacity. This paper identifies when the transmission network local hosting capacity might be limited because of static and dynamic network limits. Thus, the proposed methodology can effectively be used in assessing new interconnection requests and provides an estimation of how much and where the new renewable generation can be located such that network upgrades are minimized. The proposed approach was developed as one of the components of the AUSTEn project, which was a three-year project to map Australia’s tidal energy resource in detail and to assess its economic feasibility and ability to contribute to the country’s energy needs. In order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, two wide area networks were developed in DIgSILENT PowerFactory based on actual Australian network data near two promising tidal resource sites. Then, the proposed approach was used to assess the local tidal hosting capacity. In addition, a complementary local hosting capacity analysis is provided to show the importance of future network upgrades on the locational hosting capaity.

Wireless local area networks (WLANs) are commonplace in many universities. Understanding the trends in the usage of these networks is becoming more important. Interesting results can be extracted about association patterns by analyzing WLAN traces from real scenarios. In this work, the library in the main campus of the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC) in Barcelona has been studied. Daily and weekly patterns of the WLAN connections are shown. The population accessing the network is mostly composed of infrequent users: half of the population accesses the WLAN once during each month. Many users associate to only one of the twelve possible access points, which means that, despite the widespread use of lightweight devices, many users are static. The results of this analysis provide general tools for characterizing campus-wide WLAN and a better understanding of usage and performance issues in a mature wireless network.
