The performance of wideband array signal processing algorithms is dependant on the noise level in the system. In this thesis, a method is proposed for reducing the level of white noise in wideband arrays via a judiciously designed spatial transformation followed by a bank of high-pass filters. The method is initially introduced for uniform linear arrays (ULAs) and analysed in detail. The spectrum of the signal and noise after being processed by the proposed noise reduction method is analysed, and the correlation matrix of the processed noise is derived. The reduced noise level leads to a higher signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for the system, which can have a significant effect on the performance improvement of various beamforming methods and other array signal processing applications such as direction of arrival (DOA) estimation. The performance of two well-known beamformers, the reference signal based (RSB) beamformer and the linearly constrained minimum variance (LCMV) beamformer is reviewed. Then, the theoretical effect of applying the proposed noise reduction method as a pre-processing step on the performance enhancement of RSB and LCMV beamformers is studied. The theoretical results are then confirmed by simulation. As a representative example of wideband DOA estimation application, a compressive sensing-based DOA estimation method is employed to demonstrate the improved estimation by applying the pre-processing noise reduction method, which is confirmed by simulation. Next, the idea is extended to wideband non-uniform linear arrays (NLAs). Since, NLA does not have a uniform spacing, the beam response of the row vectors of the transformation is distorted. Therefore, the transformation is re-designed using the least squares method to satisfy the band-pass requirements of the transformation. Simulation results show a satisfactory improvement in the the performance of RSB and LCMV beamformers for the NLA structure. The idea is further extended to uniform rectangular arrays (URAs) and uniform circular arrays (UCAs), as two major types of the planar arrays. Two methods are proposed for reducing the effect of white noise in wideband URAs and for each one, a different transformation is designed. The first one is based on a two-dimensional (2D) transformation and the second one is an adaptation of the method developed for the ULA case. The developed method for the UCA structure is based on a one-dimensional (1D) transformation, with modified modulation for the transformation to satisfy the required band-pass characteristics of the transformation. Same as linear array structures, the RSB and LCMV beamformers are used to demonstrate the performance enhancement of the method for planar arrays.

The effects of cortical arousal on state complexity and evaluative importance were examined. Arousal was manipulated using two levels of white noise. In Study 1, a three-dimensional social domain was created using behavioral descriptions of eight fictitious people. In Study 2, subjects memorized these descriptions, and later, from memory, made similarity judgments among these eight targets while being exposed to either loud or soft white noise. The first hypothesis was that loud noise would effect an increase in the relative importance of the evaluation dimension. The second hypothesis was that this increased use of evaluation would be a result of a reduction in state complexity-evidenced by the other dimensions becoming less important. The results fully supported the first hypothesis and partially supported the second. There was also some support for the hypothesis that trait complex compared to trait simple individuals would be more affected by loud noise. However, the prediction that sensitizers would be more affected by the loud noise than repressors was not supported. The limitations of the second stud-y and new directions for research are discussed.

We present a new perspective on additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels that separates user and channel attributes. Following this separation, various questions concerning achievability and successive decoding can be reformulated as properties of the set of user attributes, which can be determined independently of the actual channel noise. To obtain these properties directly, we introduce a graphical framework called the power diagram. Based on graphical manipulations in this framework, our results on N-user multi-access channels include the following: 1. simplifying the achievability condition to an algorithm requiring 0 (N In N) computations 2. simplifying the check of whether a given rate tuple is decodable with simple successive decoding (to be defined) to an algorithm requiring 0(N ln N) computations 3. developing a technique for power-reduced successive decoding, accompanied by the set of rate tuples for which such a technique is applicable, and an algorithm that checks whether a given rate tuple is decodable with this technique requiring O(N In N) computations 4. presenting a class of graphical constructions for splitting any achievable rate tuple into a set of virtual users that allows successive decoding. These constructions deal with rate tuples not on the dominant face in a natural way, whereas previous works have viewed these rate tuples as a somewhat ad hoc extension of the dominant face results 5. presenting a class of graphical constructions that facilitate successive decoding to any achievable rate tuple using the time-sharing technique, improving the known upper bound on decoding complexity (using this combination of techniques) to 2N - !

Fluctuations in nanosystems play an important role in forming their electric, magnetic, thermal and other properties. Usually, due to the central limit theorem of probability theory, these fluctuations obey Gaussian statistics. However, in some cases, e.g., when the system is subjected to Poisson white noise, that is a random sequence of 𝛿-pulses, the system fluctuations are not Gaussian. Here, we derive the corresponding equation for the probability density function 𝑃(𝑥, 𝑡) of the system parameter 𝑥(𝑡) interpreted as a particle coordinate within an impenetrable box.

Though representing less than 4% of the Western Australian population, almost 40% of incarcerated adults and more than 70% of juveniles in detention in Western Australia are Aboriginal. Despite these figures prisoner education is rarely investigated in Australian academic research especially from an Aboriginal perspective. In response, this research focuses on what Aboriginal people themselves have to say about their experiences of education in Western Australian prisons. The intent is to identify what they believe helps and hinders education for Aboriginal prisoners. Consistent with critical theory this research questions society, structures and systems in context. Specifically it is grounded in critical race and whiteness theory which argues that racialised categories are socially constructed by dominant Settler systems with whiteness unmarked as a racial grouping. Attempting to counter this often unrecognised privilege, Aboriginal and other Indigenous academic voices are prioritised in this thesis. From the standpoint of a critical ally, the culturally appropriate methodology of yarning is adopted to learn from the experiences of Aboriginal ex-prisoners who volunteered to participate in this research. What is revealed relates to and goes beyond prisons and education, reflecting the interrelatedness of Indigenous life, worldviews and problem solving. Therefore experiences in prisons cannot be divorced from the broader structural and cultural influences shaping participant’s experiences of life. Based on experiences of the participants two major areas of hindrance to prisoner education can be identified. First is the impact of intergenerational trauma. Second are a range of challenges inside and outside prisons. Inside prisons there exists a lack of physical and human resources. Outside prisons Aboriginal inequality such as housing, employment, education and health are raised. Such hindrances are exemplars of white noise created by historical legacies, unquestioned white privilege and denial of Aboriginal sovereignty. What participants identify as helpful is programs, practices and relationships that value Aboriginal agency and reciprocity where non-Indigenous people and systems become informed of Aboriginal processes and perspectives of history. Having recognized that white noise requires systemic transformation, the thesis attempts to move beyond deficit and victim-blaming approaches to Indigenous prisoner education with a view to closing ‘educational gaps’. Building strong relationships is the major goal in constructing this transformative educational framework based on the four cornerstones of Honouring Aboriginal Sovereignty and Healing of Historical Trauma and actions of transformative education that recognise the need for starting with Aboriginal Agency and Becoming Informed as Whitefellas. Ultimately, it is not appropriate for Indigenous people alone to be expected to make shifts in thinking in order to match expectations of dominant Settler cultures. Changes are also required of non-Indigenous, mainstream systems, habits of mind and cultural self-awareness. Without such mutual transformation the din of white noise continues and reciprocal dignity and respect remains elusive whether inside or outside a prison.

A basic relationship between stethoscopic auscultation and background noise interference was reviewed and examined in this study. The principle experimental design of the study questioned whether hospital background noise levels are capable of masking the threshold of detection for auscultated heart sounds. Several cited studies monitoring background noise levels in various hospital locations have reported averages exceeding the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) (1974) and World Health Organization (WHO) (1980) recommendations of "quiet", namely 35 to 40 dBA (Falk & Woods, 1973; Hilton, 1985, 1987; Shapiro & Berland, 1972; Turner, et al., 1975; Woods & Falk, 1974) by as much as 46 to 51 dB, i.e., up to 86 dBA (Shapiro & Berland 1972). In addition to the previous query, a review of the literature reflected a lack of implementatory standards regarding the acoustic stethoscopic output and the masking effects of noise during the auscultation process. Specifically, this study ascertained the effective masking level (EML) intensities of two noise environments, white noise and cafeteria noise, for cardiac auscultation through an acoustic stethoscope and an amplified stethoscope. Two principle measurements were employed in the experimental protocol: an objective measurement employing a method of adjustment detection identification task of the EML, and subjective responses solicited by a forced-choice questionnaire. Sixteen normal hearing listener's were selected to participate in the experiment. Objective measures were analyzed using a MANOVA and a Pearson Product Moment Coefficient of correlation. The subjective questionnaire data were analyzed with a two-tailed T-test. All analyses were based on a .05 level of confidence.

Ett vanligt förfarande i parapsykologiska s.k. ganzfeldexperiment är att

med hjälp av vitt brus, som spelas upp i hörlurar, försöka omsluta

försökspersoner i ett slags totalt och oföränderligt perceptuellt

tillstånd. I föreliggande studie undersöks konsekvenserna av att

använda vitt brus som bakgrundsljud. 30 försökspersoner har lyssnat

till åtta ljudslingor innehållandes fyra typer av brus vid två olika

ljudnivåer, för att sedan i ett enkätformulär uppskatta hur dessa ljud

påverkat dem. Resultatet visar på signifikanta effekter av så väl

brustyp som amplitud, och dessutom en signifikant interaktionseffekt

dem emellan. Utifrån resultatet verkar valet av vitt brus brus som

akustisk komponent i ganzfeldstudier vara teoretiskt ogrundat och

direkt ofördelaktigt. Vidare diskuteras bakgrundsbrusets tänkbara

inverkan på försöksdeltagarnas förmåga att genomföra de uppgifter

som ingår i ett typiskt ganzfeldexperiment, och slutligen konstateras

att medan brunt brus förvisso verkar vara det mest omtyckta av

försöksdeltagarna, är det också det mest suggestiva. Därför synes skärt

brus vara ett lämpligare val av bakgrundsljud än något annat brus som

användes i undersökningen.

It is well known that the pulse telemetering system whose system equipment is simple is superior to the continuous one in ultilizing signal power. But in designing a pulse telemetering receiver the frequency shift problem is often encountered, the shift often greatly wider than the signal bandwidth is very unfavorable for improving receiver working sensitivity. Either to limit transmitter frequency stability strictly or to adapt AFC system in receiver for tracking carrier wave can solve the problem above, the AFC system method could improve the receiver’s performance, but the equipment is complicated. To what extent the receiver working sensitivity will be effected and how to judge the effection in case of adapting VF matched filter and RF being wideband in receiver are this paper’s emphasis. In this paper the power density spectrum distribution of the white noise which has passed through the non-linear system-the linear detector is analysed theoretically, and the improved working sensitivity of the receiver with video matched filter and its difference sensitivity value to that of the optimal receiver are derived. The tested working sensitivity data of two kind pulse receivers with different RF bands are given and the theoretical calculation results conform well with these data, thus it is proven that adapting video matched filter in pulse receiver is a effective approach for compensating the receiver working sensitivity dropping from RF bandwidth increase.

Este trabalho analisa os romances White Noise (1985) e Cosmopolis (2003), de Don DeLillo, a fim de examinar as estratégias narrativas utilizadas pelo autor norte-americano nessas ficções pós-modernas para abordar questões relativas ao meio ambiente, ao capital e à tecnologia, além de marcar sua posição contrária ao sistema econômico vigente. White Noise narra a história de Jack Gladney, um professor universitário bem-sucedido e sua família. A obra é dividida em três partes, o antes, o durante e o depois de um acidente tóxico, que muda de forma drástica a vida desta família cercada de sonhos e temores. Cosmopolis é uma narrativa que se passa em apenas um dia. O protagonista, Eric Packer, é um jovem bilionário do mercado financeiro, morador de um triplex, no prédio mais alto de Nova York. Ao acordar em uma manhã de abril, decide sair para cortar o cabelo. Nessa maratona até o seu objetivo, diversos eventos ocorrem dentro e fora de sua limusine. Pretende-se, nessa pesquisa, examinar aspectos relacionados à postura crítica do autor em relação ao capitalismo, mostrando sua possível falência bem como em relação à sociedade americana e à influência da mídia, que transforma os acontecimentos em grandes espetáculos para serem experienciados ao mesmo tempo em cadeia global. O estudo desses tópicos levará à reflexão de como a sociedade brasileira, devido à suas novas possibilidades financeiras, caminha em direção a ter características semelhantes às discutidas por DeLillo, como o intenso consumismo, a perda de valores e a desumanização. This study aims at analyzing the novels White Noise (1985) and Cosmopolis (2003), written by Don DeLillo, in order to examine the narrative strategies present in these postmodern fictions and verify the author’s approach concerning issues related to the power of capital, technology and the environment as well as to show his fierce criticism towards the dominant economic system. Taking these aspects into account, there will be a comparison on how these aspects are also noticed in Brazil at the present moment. Through the story of Jack Gladney, a professor of Hitler Studies, and his family, the book focuses on important characteristics of American society such as the influence of the media that transforms facts in great spectacles to be experienced at the same time around the globe. Jack’s family life changes completely after the Airborne Toxic Event, since this situation throws into question values related to privacy and ethics. In Cosmopolis, the narrative happens in one day. The protagonist, Eric Packer, is a young billionaire from the business world, who lives in a forty-eight room apartment in the highest building of New York City. One morning in April, he decides to go out for a haircut. In this “marathon” to his goal, many events happen inside and outside his limousine. Cosmopolis warns the readers about the critical stage of capitalism and its possible failure. This study will explore how the Brazilian society, due to new financial opportunities, becomes similar to the American society, such as an intense consumerism, the lack of values and the dehumanization. The discussion will be based on theorists such as Connor (1992), Eco (1986), Harvey (1989), Jameson (1997), Baudrillard (1988)

The aim is to bring these elements into a design context and create a textile surface that can give people a sensory and spatial experience. Through tufting it is possible to work with long and short pile, which adds tactile values in the material. The outcome of this exploration is a vast tufted landscape that partly covers the wall and continues out on the floor. The surface has an abstract visual appearance with irregular shapes that defines the different material. The large scale has an overwhelming effect and invites people to interact and explore the surface. This challenges the fundamental structures of architecture and increases the importance of tactile and human senses, such as curiosity in spatial environments

White Noise narra a história de Jack Gladney, um professor universitário bem-sucedido e sua família. A obra é dividida em três partes, o antes, o durante e o depois de um acidente tóxico, que muda de forma drástica a vida desta família cercada de sonhos e temores. Cosmopolis é uma narrativa que se passa em apenas um dia. O protagonista, Eric Packer, é um jovem bilionário do mercado financeiro, morador de um triplex, no prédio mais alto de Nova York. Ao acordar em uma manhã de abril, decide sair para cortar o cabelo. Nessa maratona até o seu objetivo, diversos eventos ocorrem dentro e fora de sua limusine. Pretende-se, nessa pesquisa, examinar aspectos relacionados à postura crítica do autor em relação ao capitalismo, mostrando sua possível falência bem como em relação à sociedade americana e à influência da mídia, que transforma os acontecimentos em grandes espetáculos para serem experienciados ao mesmo tempo em cadeia global. O estudo desses tópicos levará à reflexão de como a sociedade brasileira, devido à suas novas possibilidades financeiras, caminha em direção a ter características semelhantes às discutidas por DeLillo, como o intenso consumismo, a perda de valores e a desumanização. Abstract: This study aims at analyzing the novels White Noise (1985) and Cosmopolis (2003), written by Don DeLillo, in order to examine the narrative strategies present in these postmodern fictions and verify the author's approach concerning issues related to the power of capital, technology and the environment as well as to show his fierce criticism towards the dominant economic system. Taking these aspects into account, there will be a comparison on how these aspects are also noticed in Brazil at the present moment. Through the story of Jack Gladney, a professor of Hitler Studies, and his family, the book focuses on important characteristics of American society such as the influence of the media that transforms facts in great spectacles to be experienced at the same time around the globe. Jack's family life changes completely after the Airborne Toxic Event, since this situation throws into question values related to privacy and ethics. In Cosmopolis, the narrative happens in one day. The protagonist, Eric Packer, is a young billionaire from the business world, who lives in a forty-eight room apartment in the highest building of New York City. One morning in April, he decides to go out for a haircut. In this "marathon" to his goal, many events happen inside and outside his limousine. Cosmopolis warns the readers about the critical stage of capitalism and its possible failure. This study will explore how the Brazilian society, due to new financial opportunities, becomes similar to the American society, such as an intense consumerism, the lack of values and the dehumanization. The discussion will be based on theorists such as Connor (1992), Eco (1986), Harvey (1989), Jameson (1997), Baudrillard (1988)

The central concern in my dissertation is how current theories of rhetoric and social construction are made manifest in three of Don DeLillo's novels: Libra, White Noise, and Ratner's Star. Libra demonstrates how the historical figure Lee Harvey Oswald and the events surrounding the assassination of John Kennedy are socially constructed by media imagery and the ambient texts of American culture. White Noise is an extension of Libra in that it details how the discourse of American consumer and political culture construct our sense of self and our relationship to others in our society. Ratner's Star can be read as a systems novel that demonstrates how the fictional artifices of mathematics are analogous to the systems of thought based on discourse found in the metalinguistic formations of science in our civilization. I rely heavily on the theories of Michel Foucault to demonstrate this, and supplement Foucault's thinking with the work of philosophers such as M. M. Bakhtin, Thomas Kuhn, Richard Rorty, and composition theorists such as Kurt Spellmeyer. Don DeLillo's novels can also be used in the field of composition as they are excellent exemplars of contemporary discourse theory, and, in an appendix, I provide a sample assignment description and a student's rhetorical analysis of university discourse that is augmented by insights that the student gained from reading White Noise.

Die vorliegende Arbeit befasst sich mit dem Einfluss von nicht-weißem oder nicht-Gauß’schem synaptischen Rauschen auf die Informationsübertragung in stochastischen Neuronenmodellen. Ziel ist es, zu verstehen, wie eine Nervenzelle ein Signal in ihrer Pulsaktivität kodiert. Synaptisches Rauschen beschreibt hier den Einfluss anderer Nervenzellen, die nicht das interessierende Signal tragen, aber seine Übertragung durch ihre synaptische Wirkung auf die betrachtete Zelle beeinflussen. In stochastischen Neuronenmodellen wird diese Hintergrundaktivität durch einen stochastischen Prozess mit geeigneter Statistik beschrieben. Ist die Rate, mit der präsynaptische Pulse auftreten, hoch und zeitlich konstant, die Wirkung einzelner Pulse aber verschwindend gering, so wird das synaptische Rauschen durch einen Gauß’schen Prozess beschrieben. Oft wird zudem angenommen, dass das Rauschen unkorreliert (weiß) ist. In dieser Arbeit wird neuronale Signalübertragung in dem Fall untersucht, dass eine solche Näherung nicht mehr gerechtfertigt ist, d.h. wenn der synaptische Hintergrund durch einen stochastischen Prozess beschrieben werden muss, der nicht weiß, nicht Gauß’sch, oder weder weiß noch Gauß’sch ist. This thesis is concerned with the effect of non-white or non-Gaussian synaptic noise on the information transmission properties of single neurons. Synaptic noise subsumes the massive input that a cell receives from thousands of other neurons. In the framework of stochastic neuron models, this input is described by a stochastic process with suitably chosen statistics. If the overall arrival rate of presynaptic action potentials is high and constant in time and if each individual incoming spike has only a small effect on the dynamics of the cell, the massive synaptic input can be modeled as a Gaussian process. For mathematical tractability, one often assumes that furthermore, the input is devoid of temporal structure, i.e. that it is well described by a Gaussian white noise. This is the so-called diffusion approximation (DA). The present thesis explores neuronal signal transmission when the conditions that underlie the DA are no longer met, i.e. when one must describe the synaptic background activity by a stochastic process that is not white, not Gaussian, or neither. We explore three distinct scenarios by means of simulations and analytical calculations: First, we study a cell that receives not one but two signals, additionally filtered by synaptic short-term plasticity (STP), so that the background has to be described by a colored noise. The second scenario deals with synaptic weights that cannot be considered small; here, the effective noise is no longer Gaussian and the shot-noise nature of the input has to be taken into account. Finally, we study the effect of a presynaptic population that does not fire at a rate which is constant in time but instead undergoes transitions between states of high and low activity, so-called up and down states.

In this research, a horror game level was created using ”Unreal Engine 4” (Epic games, 2017) where white noise and processed noises was used as ambiences in order to see how it affects the perceived emotions amongst the participants. A pre-study was conducted in order to choose the stimuli for the main experiment and to test attributes. A pilot test was conducted to test the game level to find out any flaws. In the main experiment twenty participants took part in playing the finalized game level and answering a questionnaire. The results showed a change in the emotional quality depending on the noise being present, but it’s unclear if this is caused by the filtering of the noises alone or the filtering of the noises combined with other factors. A post hoc test was also conducted where a valence and arousal chart was created by letting the participants pin point the emotional attributes used in the experiments.

Between the 1960s and 1990s, Thomas Pynchon and Don DeLillo both registered and attempted to influence the development of a mode of cultural perception organized around computer technologies that we can call a "cyberspatial paradigm." This cyberspatial worldview involves a dual ontology in which experienced reality is generated by a fundamentally different, hidden one. This way of organizing experience parallels the structure of cyberspace, in which a hidden set of data gives rise to a world that is experienced spatially. This dissertation examines the responses Pynchon and DeLillo mount to their shared perception that American culture is beginning to be organized around this paradigm. Their responses are particularly clear in The Crying of Lot 49 and White Noise and the dissertation focuses on those texts. While sharing many similarities in the way in which they respond to the cultural paradigm of cyberspace, Pynchon and DeLillo primarily differ in the degree to which they sense the interactive potential in the cyberspatial paradigm. Pynchon sees American culture as setting the stage for meaningful collaboration between individuals. This interactive potential in Pynchon's novels involves a search for a way out of the system of simulation and control, which raises the possibility of intervening in the creation of experienced reality in a way that--since it is fundamentally cooperative in nature--skirts the hegemonic demands of a dominant, totalitarian culture. However, this collaboration comes at the cost of the individual. The collaboration of individuals dissolves into a totalitarian demand for obedience. DeLillo, on the other hand, doesn't see escape from the system of simulation and control as a viable possibility. Neither does he see collaboration along the fringes of society as possible in a culture that has become so adept at absorbing the fringe into the mainstream of corporate profitability. The task for his characters, then, is to find a way to live within the constraints of simulated, virtual reality. In the process, his characters create themselves as individuals, carving out a small pocket of space in which they can create their own universe without giving in to the demands of the system. The two authors represent opposing impulses that are connected in a cyclical way: Pynchon's impulse creates a collaborative space, but, since this space is inevitably taken over by powerful others, it results in the dissolution of the individual that originally made this collaborative space possible. DeLillo's impulse starts from the end point of the Pynchonian one: the individual has become nothing more that what the marketing departments of corporate America has said it is. By going deeper into this unsettling reality, DeLillo demonstrates how the individual can re-emerge under these circumstances, thereby creating the sorts of individuals capable of engaging in Pynchonian collaboration.

Previous findings have suggested that auditive white noise benefits cognitive performance under certain circumstances. The primary purpose of the present pilot study was to explore the effects of visual white noise on verbal episodic memory performance in a normal participant population. Performance was assessed by an immediate free recall test. A secondary purpose was to explore whether participants` eye blink rates and/or temporal processing alters in different noise conditions. The findings of the present study suggest that visual white noise does not affect recall performance among normal participants. However, partially different memory systems and/or memorizing techniques might be used in different noise conditions. Furthermore, noise was not found to affect participants` blink rates or temporal processing.

The Indian Creek seismic reflection profile located in White County, Illinois is a crooked seismic line with four 90 degree bends in the line, but otherwise it is generally straight. Data acquisition geometry-related noise is present on shot records as well as final stacked records. The purpose of this thesis is to process the Indian Creek seismic data using industry standard seismic reflection processing software in various attempts to reduce the noise associated with the profile geometry. Methods applied were based on three different data acquisition binning geometries and five different line geometry acquisition scenarios selected from the complete 120 channel dataset. Binning geometries used include crooked-line, curved slalom-line and straight line processing of the data. The acquisition geometry-related scenarios used to produce final stacked records include: 1.) Elimination of very high fold cmp data 2.) Careful selection of velocity function locations 3.) Variation of the number of velocity functions 4.) Reduction of the number of channels used 5.) Use of individual sides of the split spread array Results from these processing scenarios are presented in the thesis. ii The original stacked record produced by a professional data processing company was used for quality control and comparisons to the stacked records produced for this thesis. The stacked records compared were created using the straight slalom line binning method, which produced the best results of the three binning geometries used for this thesis. The stacked records produced compared favorably with the professionally processed records, however additional process experimentation was done for this thesis. The survey profile was interpreted using a synthetic seismogram based on a sonic log and drill hole geology data from a well adjacent to the survey line. An older seismic profile located approximately one mile north of the Indian Creek profile and an associated synthetic seismogram was also used for the geological interpretation. Five major reflectors were identified on the Indian Creek reflection records, they include: the Golconda Formation, The Barlow Limestone, The New Albany Shale, the Knox Supergroup, and the Eau Claire Formation. In one area on the western part of the thesis record a subtle localized geological structure is interpreted to be a fault. It was not clearly observed on the professionally processed record, probably due to the use of too few velocity functions, resulting in a lack of resolution of the structure. One of the important conclusions of this thesis is that in areas where small and subtle structures may exist, it is necessary to use more velocity function to resolve such features.

Several characteristics of the Rayleigh fading channel are examined. A digital Rayleigh fading simulator is used to generate the (fading) signal envelope from which various statistics are derived. Based on the simulation results, a simple model is proposed in order to estimate the block error rate of a block of N data bits transmitted over the Rayleigh fading channel in the presence of additive white Gaussian noise. This model gives an average estimation error of about 4 % over the range of blocksizes N = 63, 127, 255, 511, 1023, 2047 (bits), average signal-to-noise ratios 70 = 5 to 35 (dB) and fading frequencies f[sub D] = 10 to 90 (Hz) corresponding to vehicle speeds of 8 to 71 MPH at a radio carrier frequency of 850 MHz. A second somewhat more complex model for estimating the block error rate is found to yield a lower average estimation error of 2.4 % over the same set of simulated data. The probability distributions of the fade rate and the fade duration are also examined. Empirical models are derived for the estimation of the probability mass function of the fade rate and the probability density function of the fade duration. These empirical models allow fairly accurate estimates without the need for cosdy and time-consuming simulations. The probability of m-bit errors in an N-bit block is an important parameter in the design of error-correcting codes for use on the mobile radio channel. However, such probabilities are difficult to determine without performing extensive simulation or field trials. An approach to estimate them empirically is proposed.

Abstract The paintings in White Noise are a response to temporal lighting conditions that occur at night. A discussion of sensory affect demonstrates how perception is inextricably connected to the body’s sensory capabilities such as sound and touch. By examining Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s theory of phenomenology and looking at Gestalt Psychology based experiments it is made clear that seeing whole and complete forms in the world is a product of embodied perceptual experience. I recall early experiences of being affected by light describing the optical illusion of the afterimage and then move into the everyday perceptions that inform my current painting practice. The painting studio process is examined as a beacon from which to reconcile the affecting nuances of observed lighting at night. I discuss the importance of allowing trial, error and patience to take place while making paintings to in turn seek out optimal colour relationships and shape interaction. By developing a specific painting vocabulary that responds to the colour, texture and sound associated with perceptual experiences I reconcile through the abstract process of painting how affecting experiences can be re-presented and reinvented onto the canvas.

This is the direct result of a shift in proprietorship from individual to joint ventures in ownership of built form. Joint ventures in ownership, in turn, allow for an increase in the scale of built form, or 'bigness,' which dislodges or shifts the fundamental architectural volume or unit. This new unit appears on frontage roads across the nation, and Houston's own 'feeder' roads are a prime example of this changing space of American cities.

It is shown that, if $a,\,b\in\mathbb{C}$ such that $a^2+b^2=0$, then $g_{ab}(\varphi\circ\theta_{t})(x)$ is a martingale with respect to the filtration $\calF_{t}$, where $\calF_{t}$ is the Borel field generated by $\{B(s)~; ~0\leq s\leq t\}$, $g_{ab}$ the Fourier-Gauss transforms defined by $g_{ab}\varphi(x)=\int_{S^{*}}\varphi(ay+bx)\mu(dy)$, for any entire function $\varphi$ of exponential growth of order two, and $\theta_{t}$ is an operator defined by $$\theta_{t}x(s)=1_{(-\infty,t]}(s)x(s).$$ for all $x\in L^{2}(\r)$. Let $\{ ~e_{j}:1\leq j\leq n \}$ be complete orthonormal set of $L^{2}(\r^{1})$ , and ${\calF}_{n} =$$\sigma$ \{$(x,e_{j})$ : $1\leq j\leq n$\} ($(x,e_{j})=\int_{\r}e_{j}(t)dB(t)$) and $P_{n}$ the orthogonal projection of $L^{2}(\r^{1})$ onto the space spanned by $\{~e_{j}: 1\leq j \leq n \}$. It is shown that $g_{ab}(\varphi\circ P_{n})$ is martingale with respect to $\calF_{n}$, if and only if $a^{2}+b^{2}=0$. Further, we extend the concept of martingale to generalized white noise functions. As applications, we give some examples for verifying our theorem .

In this paper it is show that the conditional expectation of a white noise functional $\varphi$ given the the Brownian motion $B(t)$ is represented by $$E[\varphi|\mathcal{B}_{t}]=\int_{S^*} \varphi[\Theta_tx+(1-\Theta_t)y] \mu(dy)\ ,$$ where $\Theta_t$ is the Heaviside function $$\Theta_t(s)\equiv \left\{ \begin{array}{ll} \mbox{I}& ,s\leq t ,\cr 0 &,s>t. \end{array}\right.$$ and $\Theta_t$ is the Heaviside operator defined by $\Theta_{t}x(s)=\Theta_{t}(s)x(s)$. Note that the Brownian motion $B(t)$ can be represented by $$B_{t}(x)=\left\{ \begin{array}{rr} \langle x,1_{[0,t]}\rangle & , t\geq 0, x\in S^*(\mathbb{R}^1) ;\cr -\langle x,1_{[t,0]}\rangle & , t< 0, x\in S^*(\mathbb{R}^1). \end{array}\right.$$ If $\{e_{j}:1\leq j\leq n \}$ be an orthonormal set in $L^2(\mathbb{R}^1)$ and $\mathcal{B}_{n}=\sigma \{\langle x,e_{j}\rangle:1\leq j \leq n\}$ and if $P_{n}$ denotes the orthogonal projection of $L^2(\mathbb{R}^1)$ onto the space spanned by $\{e_{j}:1\leq j\leq n \}$, then it is shown that conditional expectation enjoy the integral representation $$E[\varphi|\mathcal{B}_{n}]=\int_{S^*}\varphi[P_{n}x+(1-P_{n})y]\mu(dy)$$ Using the above integral representation we are able to investigate the regularity properties of the conditional expectation and compute the conditional expectation easily. Moreover, we can extend the concept of conditional expectation to generalized white noise functionals. As applications, we give some examples.

Indigenous content on commercial Australian television is rare and Indigenous content makers rarely produce the content we see. This research examines systemic racism in the production of commercial Australian television drama and recognizes the platform of commercial television as a powerful cultural resource which continues to perpetuate a cultural terra nullius – a denial of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander presence. The exegesis and documentary appropriate the site of commercial television drama production for a larger enquiry into the ‘great silence’ of Australia’s post-colonizing present. The research utilizes Foucault’s theories on power and knowledge, and Australian studies on Whiteness and Identity, as theoretical contexts to examine the lack of representation of Indigenous Australians in our mainstream field of vision. Taking this theoretical examination a step further, the research interviews leading Indigenous and non-Indigenous producers, directors, writers, casting agents, casting directors and media commentators to understand the processes, in commercial television drama production, which are either inclusive or exclusive of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander content. These filmed and edited interviews comprise the documentary White Noise and contribute primary research into commercial television drama production and the systemic barriers to inclusion. The research found a convergence of multiple creative components have prevented, and continue to prevent, access to commercial television screens by Indigenous content makers. The Systems Model of Creativity (Csikszentmihalyi 1999) provides a theoretical mechanism to unpack the convergence of these creative components by mapping the domain, the field and the individual agents working inside the industry. Through the lens of commercial television drama, the research examines how a creative framework can explain the means by which inequalities are produced, reproduced and perhaps even mitigated.
