The field of human–computer interaction is constantly evolving and facing new challenges. In this study, we propose an experimental method for designing e-commerce user interfaces with varying levels of aesthetics and usability while maintaining a similar level of user experience. The method is based on the Deming Cycle and Nielsen’s framework for design principles. Four e-commerce websites were designed with low/high levels of aesthetics and usability. Based on 160 surveys, the experimental results demonstrated that it is possible to design user interfaces with varying levels of aesthetics and usability while maintaining a similar level of user design perception. Our findings suggest that usability is more crucial than aesthetics in enhancing user experience, which aligns with previous studies. We also emphasize considering aesthetics and usability in UI design and propose the principle “What You Design Is What You Get” (WYDISWYG) as a foundation for future research. Among the evaluated websites, Website1 (the best design) achieved the highest UI quality, with users perceiving it positively at an impressive rate of almost 0.91 percent. In contrast, Website4 (the worst design) had the lowest UI quality, receiving a perception score of only 0.38 percent. The websites designed with a combination of aesthetics and usability, Website2 and Website3, garnered different perception values of 0.79 and 0.51, respectively. While this study has some limitations, such as the subjective selection of features and the focus on e-commerce websites only, it provides a starting point for further investigation into the selection of design principles, consideration of other website domains, and clarification of users’ perception of UI elements to align with Nielsen’s principles.

Website hierarchy is a central principle for organizing information in websites with implications for user orientation on the Web. Employing websites for children as case studies, this paper proposes a conceptualization of website hierarchy developed by adapting a tool from systemic functional linguistics to the analysis of websites. This new conceptualization draws on the strengths and reconciles the differences of existing ones in order to reflect the fluidity of websites as hypermedia texts on the WWW and the role that the interaction between content organization, webpage and navigation design plays in revealing a website's hierarchical organization and thereby orienting users within it.

In many cases, temporary websites may be simple, accessible solutions for knowledge management and dissemination of information. However, such sites may become outdated as the funding ends, but yet in many cases, still publicly available through the Internet. The issue of website sustainability is a relevant topic for all organizations that have websites. Website lifecycle, knowledge management, and website sustainability issues are discussed through a theoretical-based literature review. These issues are then summarized and used as lessons learned for the case study approach of this paper. The aim is to identify a solution to address a website’s life and longevity, post project. A practical case study assessment of the issue of project website sustainability is needed to address the website’s longevity—post project—as creation is often made through temporary endeavors. Recommendations for future project websites are made as the outcomes and results of this study and are expressed in the form of suggested practices for project website sustainability in future projects.

Academic websites play a crucial role in supporting learning activities and academic growth in the digital age. These websites are created and maintained by academic institutions to provide resources, services, and information to the academic community. Academic websites aim to promote the institution, facilitate communication, and disseminate educational content. However, as these websites develop in complexity and draw more visitors, it is crucial to guarantee their efficient operation and satisfying user experience. For academic websites to operate and be reliable, top-notch software development and thorough software testing are required. The performance testing of academic websites using Apache JMeter and the Web Server Stress Tool is the main topic of this study. This study's conclusions are intended to improve software quality and performance for academic website managers and developers. Gathering data, establishing the test environment, planning and creating the test, carrying it out, and evaluating the system in light of the test results are all steps in the performance testing process. The website operates well under heavy traffic, according to the findings of the performance testing done with Apache JMeter. However, the Web Server Stress Tool shows that the website's performance is insufficient under significant user loads. This test gives information about the website's functionality and any potential problems, which can then be used to determine whether speed improvements are required.

Today, with the growth of internet usage, sports users can easily interact with other fans or sports organisations. As a result, the website's quality has improved over time. However, there was a dearth evidence demonstrating the website quality related to users' satisfaction. Therefore, the study aimed to identify the most preferred factor of the quality of websites among the website users, identify the most preferred factor of user satisfaction towards the quality of websites, and investigate the relationship between the sports club website's quality and users' satisfaction. Two hundred forty-eight respondents (78.2% were male) from Melaka United Soccer Association fans were involved. The results showed a complementary relationship (C.R.) was the most preferred factor for quality websites and trust was the primary factor of users' satisfaction. Furthermore, there was a relationship between the usefulness of information to users' satisfaction (inertia, trust and satisfaction), ease of use to trust and satisfaction, and a relationship between entertainment and inertia. The results from the research will become a guide to the website administrator to improve the quality, which will increase user satisfaction.

E-government uses information technology to change government relations with citizens, the private sector, and other institutions. The importance of identifying e-government performance cannot be separated from the use of the website. Thus, assessing the website quality is very important as it helps determine the quality of e-government services and improve service processes. In almost two years of implementing e-government in West Sumatra, there has been no evaluation of the provincial and district/city government websites, which are the primary tools for implementing e-government today. In the Covid-19 pandemic period, the website's role has become more critical as a means for the public to get the latest information regarding developments in handling the pandemic. This study focuses on assessing and evaluating the level of maturity (maturity assessment) of the provincial and district/city government websites in implementing e-government and its relationship in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. Forty websites were assessed for their e-government maturity in this study. The website consists of 19 district/city websites, one provincial webpage, and 20 websites for handling Covid-19 for each district/city and province. The maturity assessment was measured using the United Nations (UN) e-government maturity model. This study found that government websites are still at stage 1 and stage 2 maturity models. Meanwhile, the Covid-19 handling website is on stage1. It is hoped that the government in West Sumatra will pay more attention to improving e-government through websites in the current pandemic era.

With the growing importance of communicating with the public via the web, many industries have used web analytics to provide information that organizations can use to better achieve their goals. Although the importance of health care websites has also grown, the health care industry has been slower to adopt the use of web analytics. Web analytics are the measurement, collection, analysis, and reporting of internet data used to measure direct user interaction. Our objective is to provide generalized methods for using web analytics as key performance metrics to evaluate websites and outline actionable recommendations for improvement. By deconstructing web analytic categories such as engagement, users, acquisition, content, and platform, we describe how web analytics are used to evaluate websites and how improvements can be made using this information. Engagement is how a user interacts with a website. It can be evaluated using the daily active users to monthly active users (DAU/MAU) ratio, bounce rate, pages viewed, and time on site. Poor engagement indicates potential problems with website usability. Users pertains to demographic information regarding the users interacting with a website. This data can help administrators understand who is engaging with their website. Acquisition refers to the overall website traffic and the method of traffic, which allows administrators to see how people are accessing their website. This information helps websites expand their methods of attracting users. Content refers to the overall relevancy, accuracy, and trustworthiness of a website’s content. If a website has poor content, it will likely experience difficulty with user engagement. Finally, platform refers to the technical aspects of how people access a website. It includes both the internet browsers and devices used. By providing detailed descriptions of these categories, we have identified how web administrators can use web analytics to systematically assess their websites. We have also provided generalized recommendations for actionable improvements. By introducing the potential of web analytics to augment usability and the conversion rate, we hope to assist health care organizations in better communicating with the public and therefore accomplishing the goals of their websites.

There are several Web Content Management Systems (WCMS) available that are used by web developers in order to develop and manage a website. In addition, over the last years, companies have invested in Search Engine Optimization (SEO) techniques by applying the factors used by search engines, such as Google, in order to rank amongst the first results in Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs). On-page factors such as the implementation of keywords in the title tags and the website loading time are amongst the criteria that are taken into consideration and are directly affected by the website’s technology and WCMS. Following a relevant literature review, the authors conducted research amongst 6682 websites in order to identify whether and which WCMS is used by SEO experts’ websites that appear in the top search results. Findings indicated that custom made websites that do not rely on widely used WCMSs appear more frequently at the top of search results, while the Drupal CMS appears quite high, despite it being used by a small number of websites across the web.

Abstract Due to age-related declines, older adults often experience difficulties using the Internet and navigating websites, even among websites specifically designed for them. Subsequently, the National Institute on Aging (NIA) and National Library of Medicine (NLM; 2001) published guidelines to promote website usability among a later life population. Applying quantitative content analysis, this study examined the accessibility of senior resource websites based on NIA and NLM recommendations. Specifically, the relation between the type of organization sponsoring the websites (i.e., governmental, non-profit, or private) and overall accessibility and the relation between the number of resource categories (e.g., housing, financial, etc.) and overall accessibility were investigated. Font size, organization of presented information, and the color and contrast on the websites were coded to determine how they contribute to overall accessibility. Using a sample of the 100 most-searched senior resource websites, a one-way ANOVA indicated that the type of site on overall accessibility was not significant, F(2, 97) = 2.29, p = .11, η2 = .04. The multiple regression model showed that font size (β = .30, p < .001), organization of information (β = .38, p < .001), and color and contrast (β = .45, p < .001) were significant predictors of overall website accessibility and explained 62% of the variance, F(3, 96) = 51.18, p < .001. The findings suggest that various NIA guidelines differentially contribute to a website’s accessibility, and further attention should be paid to cognitive aspects of resource websites.

This research aims to find out the factors that affect loyalty among consumers of online travel websites. The variables in this study were selected after profound research on the literature review and review of the customers' feedback who were using the Booking.com website. Models of antecedents were tested such as price, convenience, experience, and interaction in predicting consumer satisfaction and the impact on brand loyalty among online travel website customers. Data was collected from 420 users of an online travel website (Booking.com) and analysed through the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). The findings show that all constructs influence consumer satisfaction toward online travel websites and consequently influence customer brand loyalty. The research results will create awareness for entrepreneurs, organisations, researchers, and the public to improve marketing strategies and enhance customer retention and brand loyalty. Websites need to consistently deliver high-quality packages and services to stay on top of trends and build trust with customers by providing good service. Live customer service is one of the most significant implications since interaction with the website significantly affects customer satisfaction. As such, websites need to be available in real-time for the customers to enhance brand loyalty. The research outcomes can be beneficial to enhance the reputation of the website and generate more revenue.

Purpose – This study aims to investigate pharmaceutical company-sponsored disease information websites that are created and operated by pharmaceutical companies. Without clear indication of the site ownership, these websites look like non-advertising health information websites. Consumers’ responses to pharmaceutical company-sponsored disease information websites were examined in comparison to their responses to typical direct-to-consumer (DTC) drug brand websites. Design/methodology/approach – A field experiment was conducted with a representative sample of US adults. Study subjects were randomly assigned to one of three live websites: pharmaceutical company-sponsored disease information website; DTC brand website with a high level of trust cues; and DTC brand website with a low level of trust cues. After viewing the assigned websites, participants completed an online questionnaire. The questionnaire included measurements for perceived website trust, attitude toward the website, intention to use information, perceived importance of prescription drug information, perceived health, prescription drug use, disposition to trust, prior experience with the website and demographic information. Findings – The pharmaceutical company-sponsored disease information website generated higher website trust and more positive attitude and information use intention than the DTC drug brand websites. The results suggest that company-sponsored disease information websites may present some ethical issues related to website identity information transparency, which seems to inhibit consumers’ persuasion knowledge activation and proper coping responses. Because such websites look like non-advertising health information websites, consumers tend to evaluate them more positively and place higher trust in them than typical DTC drug brand websites with clear advertiser identification. Originality/value – This is the first study examining pharmaceutical company-sponsored disease information websites, a relatively new form of covert DTC online advertising with potential ethical concerns due to the site identity transparency issues. This study’s findings suggest that consumers are likely to be more trusting and receptive of information presented in websites taking the form of a non-advertising health information website than in DTC brand websites.

The paper investigates the mechanisms through which companies can gain additional competitive advantages through using a corporate website. We identified statistically significant relationship between financial performance and aggregated metrics of the corporate website based on sample of 1240 European and 1056 Russian companies. The study is implemented in two stages: (1) applying the principal component analysis to conceptualize website metrics and (2) evaluating a regression model with a dummy variable to analyze the relationship between the characteristics of corporate websites and the financial performance of companies. Principal Component Analysis identified two components that reflect the visibility and authority of corporate websites. Regression analysis showed a statistically significant relationship between these characteristics and the company’s revenue. Moreover, for Russian companies we observe that visibility of the company’s website has the highest positive effect on the revenue. On contrary, for European companies’ website’s authority provides the highest increase in its revenue.

Website usability has received decent empirical attention in recent academic literature. However, there are various website characteristics that might still influence the usability of websites. In this empirical exploration, we propose three such characteristics: speed with which websites respond to customer requests (i.e., website agility); the capability of websites to restore its operations in the face of a disruption (i.e., website resilience) and the capability of websites to retain the interests of customers and keep them engaged interactively (i.e., website attractiveness) as enablers of website usability based on dynamic capability extension of resource-based view. Further, we argue that website usability will influence electronic word of mouth (e-WOM) for those websites. We also explore if there is any influence of website agility and resilience on website attractiveness. Using customers as target respondents who have used websites mainly for travel and tourism purposes, we test for the proposed relationships through collecting survey data based on face-to-face interview. Partial least squares analysis of 285 survey responses suggests website agility attractiveness and resilience to be dominant enablers for website usability and website usability positively influences e-WOM.

Phishing attack is a cybercrime that can lead to severe financial losses for Internet users and entrepreneurs. Typically, phishers are fond of using fuzzy techniques during the creation of a website. They confuse the victim by imitating the appearance and content of a legitimate website. In addition, many websites are vulnerable to phishing attacks, including financial institutions, social networks, e-commerce, and airline websites. This paper is an extension of our previous work that leverages the favicon with Google image search to reveal the identity of a website. Our identity retrieval technique involves an effective mathematical model that can be used to assist in retrieving the right identity from the many entries of the search results. In this paper, we introduced an enhanced version of the favicon-based phishing attack detection with the introduction of the Domain Name Amplification feature and incorporation of addition features. Additional features are very useful when the website being examined does not have a favicon. We have collected a total of 5,000 phishing websites from PhishTank and 5,000 legitimate websites from Alexa to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. From the experimental results, we achieved a 96.93% true positive rate with only a 4.13% false positive rate.

AbstractThe research identifies and evaluates the content and readability of Websites of all radiotherapy departments that provide a Website. As more patients are being referred for radiotherapy treatment each year, the information needs of the public on this subject is growing. Fifty-two per cent of radiotherapy departments within the United Kingdom (UK) and Ireland were identified as providing a Website. These Websites were evaluated, over a period of 2 weeks, using an adapted Website evaluation tool. Five criteria – content, authority, navigation, design and technical aspects – were identified as important aspects of a Website. For each criterion a number of statements were listed and using a Likert scale were marked. Flesch–Kincaid readability tests were used to analyse the readability level of the Websites. Data analysis resulted in the ranking of the Websites. Evaluation scores varied greatly and the readability tests showed 92% of the Websites were written at a level too high for the public. This shows the varying quality of radiotherapy department Websites with scores ranging from 48 to 115, and the varying readability level of these Websites. The research makes suggestions for the improvement of radiotherapy department Websites including the provision of a dedicated Website team within the department, educated in Website design.

Properly edited and presented description of service or product offer can decide about efficiency of a website. Difficult texts full of professional expressions and without subtitles can be unclear for many customers. The same applies to descriptions of rural tourism offers. The aim of the paper was to evaluate perceptual accessibility of the offers published on the websites of the objects of rural tourism. The offers placed on 515 websites were analysed. The surveys were conducted in qualitative terms. A representative sample of a 180-200-word text was collected from every website and then analysed by means of Jasnopis and Logios internet applications. The surveys were also carried out in quantitative terms. The quantitative analysis included measurements of content ratio to the website’s code performed by means of three internet applications. The results were standardized with use of zero unitarization and then the relation between the quantity of published texts and their perceptual accessibility was examined. In conclusion, it was revealed that the offers located on the websites of rural tourism objects are written in more difficult but accessible language. However, at the same time, the significant number of websites presented small amounts of content which in the longer term can affect negatively their efficiency

In the present-day digital landscape, websites have increasingly relied on digital marketing practices, notably search engine optimization (SEO), as a vital component in promoting sustainable growth. The traffic a website receives directly determines its development and success. As such, website owners frequently engage the services of SEO experts to enhance their website’s visibility and increase traffic. These specialists employ premium SEO audit tools that crawl the website’s source code to identify structural changes necessary to comply with specific ranking criteria, commonly called SEO factors. Working collaboratively with developers, SEO specialists implement technical changes to the source code and await the results. The cost of purchasing premium SEO audit tools or hiring an SEO specialist typically ranges in the thousands of dollars per year. Against this backdrop, this research endeavors to provide an open-source Python-based Machine Learning SEO software tool to the general public, catering to the needs of both website owners and SEO specialists. The tool analyzes the top-ranking websites for a given search term, assessing their on-page and off-page SEO strategies, and provides recommendations to enhance a website’s performance to surpass its competition. The tool yields remarkable results, boosting average daily organic traffic from 10 to 143 visitors.

Abstract. The online presence of ideological groups has enabled the dissemination of group beliefs and ideas through a variety of new media outlets. Websites have offered a way for these groups to share aspects of their ideology and to create a sense of shared identity. While ideological groups have been of interest for decades, little empirical research has examined their online presence. The aims of this study were to compare nonviolent and violent ideological group websites with each other and with nonideological websites with respect to social categorization, moral disengagement, and website credibility, and to examine the relationships of psychological processes to website credibility. A content analysis approach was used to rate 105 websites (violent = 32, nonviolent = 36; nonideological = 37) for aspects of social categorization, outgrouping, moral disengagement, content features of credibility, and structural features of credibility. Violent ideological group websites manifest a greater degree of social categorization, outgrouping, and moral disengagement than nonviolent ideological and nonideological websites. Regression analysis shows that these three variables negatively predict content and structural website credibility for nonviolent ideological groups but do not significantly predict website credibility for violent groups or nonideological groups. Potential limitations include small sample, use of raters (vs. normative website visitors) to evaluate websites, inclusion of only English-language websites, limited number of psychological processes examined and the potential need for more specific website categories. Social identity processes on websites vary for different types of groups and impact perceived credibility of such groups in online environments.

Phishing poses a significant threat to the financial and privacy security of internet users and often serves as the starting point for cyberattacks. Many machine-learning-based methods for detecting phishing websites rely on URL analysis, offering simplicity and efficiency. However, these approaches are not always effective due to the following reasons: (1) highly concealed phishing websites may employ tactics such as masquerading URL addresses to deceive machine learning models, and (2) phishing attackers frequently change their phishing website URLs to evade detection. In this study, we propose a robust, multi-view Transformer model with an expert-mixture mechanism for accurate phishing website detection utilizing website URLs, attributes, content, and behavioral information. Specifically, we first adapted a pretrained language model for URL representation learning by applying adversarial post-training learning in order to extract semantic information from URLs. Next, we captured the attribute, content, and behavioral features of the websites and encoded them as vectors, which, alongside the URL embeddings, constitute the website’s multi-view information. Subsequently, we introduced a mixture-of-experts mechanism into the Transformer network to learn knowledge from different views and adaptively fuse information from various views. The proposed method outperforms state-of-the-art approaches in evaluations of real phishing websites, demonstrating greater performance with less label dependency. Furthermore, we show the superior robustness and enhanced adaptability of the proposed method to unseen samples and data drift in more challenging experimental settings.

Purpose Website benchmarking theory and the website analysis method (WAM) are benchmark tested across non-commercial tropical tourism websites. The paper aims to discuss this issue. Design/methodology/approach The abridged WAM benchmarks 280 tropical tourism websites from four continental areas (Africa, Asia, Oceania, and The Americas) and presence or absence of website components objectively rank-scores. Across locations significant website benchmark score differences are determined. In all, 20 of these websites are ranked by an eight expert focus group. These experts also seek-out the existence of allocated common website components. Findings The abridged WAM approach is suitable for benchmarking tropical tourism websites. Website benchmarking scores at-level are determined. At the website, domain, and function levels significant continental area differences exist. Experts cross-check the study. They find it easier to rank websites with fewer components, and show split decisions when determining the existence of common website components. Research limitations/implications This study’s abridged version of WAM uses publicly viewable components to show significant differences across website scores, and identifies some missing components for possible future inclusion on the website, and it also supports the WAM benchmarking theory approach. Practical implications Website managers/owners can apply WAM (or an abridged WAM) to benchmark their websites. WAM is theoretically supported and it systematically allows comparison against the universal set of components and/or against competitor websites. A full or abridged WAM approach to website benchmarking is preferable to subjective or survey-based approaches. Originality/value This study successfully applies the Cassidy and Hamilton (2016) theory and approach to practical website benchmarking.

Relevance of the topic. The 21st century is widely regarded as the age of technology. Nowadays, no one can imagine their life without browsing various websites. As Gonzalez et al. (2015) state, websites are a dominant place for users to obtain information. Many professional sports organisations use their websites to develop relationships with their fans by providing them with news and results (Alonso-Dos-Santos, Moreno, Ríos, & Alguacil, 2017). Sports websites are especially useful for sports enthusiasts, as sports is a very globalised activity and it is physically impossible to be at all desired events. Fans are not only more engaged and interested in their favourite teams but also in their websites, thus performing a kind of news distribution function for the club (Lewis, 2013). The problem. The widespread use of information technology in various felds has made research on the adoption or rejection of these technologies an important factor in every organisation (Mohammadi & Isanejad, 2018). The rapid change and development of websites mean that users’ perception of their quality is also changing. Therefore, it is important to track the constantly changing user expectations and their engagement. A newer and more up-to-date study can help organisations to further improve their websites, thus competing with other organisations in their market. The aim of the study is to investigate user perception of quality in sports websites. The subject of the study is user perception of quality in sports websites. Research methodology. A survey was used to investigate user perception of quality in sports websites. Respondents were given an anonymous online survey. The object of the study was user perception of quality in sports websites. The study was based on the WebQual questionnaire of Gonzalez et al. (2015). The purpose of the study is to investigate user perception of quality in sports websites. The data were collected in February and March 2023. A total of 303 respondents participated in the study. Results and conclusion. A comparison of the distribution of respondents according to which website they would prefer shows that all analysed categories reflect a trend. In all four question categories, the better-rated website was X website and when respondents were asked to choose between these websites, the vast majority (69.31%) would prefer X website, while 30.69% of respondents would choose Y website. This result means that among these competing basketball websites, X website seems to be more attractive and high-quality for most users. The results of the study allowed to understand what quality criteria affect the opinion and choice of sports websites by users. Comparing the results obtained with other previous studies, it was observed that individual categories or subcategories can not only influence the choice of a website but can also interact with each other, thus affecting each other. An analysis of the survey results showed that the accuracy of information, security, website understandability, security and website attractiveness are the main features that positively affect the user and help websites gain a competitive advantage over other websites in the same feld or market. Keywords: sports website, user perception of quality, engagement.

Background: Review of the recent literature suggests substantial use of the Internet by patients seeking health care information despite questionable accuracy and readability of information presented on some websites. The purpose of our study was to assess the accuracy, quality, and readability of online information regarding trigger finger. Methods: Three terms (“trigger finger”, “stenosing tenosynovitis”, and “finger locking”) were used to query three Internet search engines to evaluate websites regarding information about trigger finger. Three hand surgery fellows independently assessed website accuracy and quality using standardized scoring criteria. The Fleisch-Kincaid reading grade level score was used to assess website readability. Website authorship and commercial association were also noted. Results: Sixty-nine unique websites were assessed. Internet information obtained using the search term “stenosing tenosynovitis” was written at a significantly higher reading level than information found using “finger locking” or “trigger finger”. Website quality and accuracy were both significantly better in websites authored by physicians compared to websites authored by non-physicians. However, website accuracy was significantly poorer in websites featuring commercial association. Additionally, websites presenting information written below the 8th grade reading level demonstrated poorer accuracy. Conclusions: Search term has a significant effect on the readability of online information regarding trigger finger. Despite the terminology used in searches, most websites are largely inaccurate and may not be easily understandable by the general population. This demonstrates a substantial barrier to accessing accurate health care information and may impact patient outcomes. Hand surgeons should direct patients towards websites presenting accurate information with easily readable content.

The official website of any organisation provides authentic information about it. The current study is a novel attempt to explore international library association websites and assess those websites based on web content evaluation and webometric parameters. Several library websites have been analysed by researchers. However, the same has not been attempted regarding the library association website at the international level. International library associations indexed by American Library association’s website were taken as the sample. Data were collected using a link analysis tool from https://moz.com/ which helps in determining Domain Authority, Page Authority, in-links, and out-links; Google was used for the links. Official websites of the library associations were visited for the website evaluation with a well-structured checklist having 19 criteria. International Association of Law Libraries is found to have the highest simple web impact factor and external web impact factor. In contrast, the Association of Jewish Libraries has the highest internal web impact factor. All the websites examined in this study are hosted under the .org domain. The study revealed that 7 out of 8 (87.5 %) international library association websites’ Domain Authority and Page Authority is below 50. Essential information like customer service, currency, and FAQ are not available on the websites. The results of this study will help the library associations in re-structuring and better maintenance of their website.

Background Companies use brand websites as a promotional tool to engage consumers on the web, which can increase product use. Given that some products are harmful to the health of consumers, it is important for marketing associated with these products to be subject to public health surveillance. However, terms of service (TOS) governing the use of brand website content may impede such important research. Objective The aim of this study is to explore the TOS for brand websites with public health significance to assess possible legal and ethical challenges for conducting research on consumer product websites. Methods Using Statista, we purposefully constructed a sample of 15 leading American tobacco, alcohol, psychiatric pharmaceutical, fast-food, and gun brands that have associated websites. We developed and implemented a structured coding system for the TOS on these websites and coded for the presence versus absence of different types of restriction that might impact the ability to conduct research. Results All TOS stated that by accessing the website, users agreed to abide by the TOS (15/15, 100%). A total of 11 out of 15 (73%) websites had age restrictions in their TOS. All alcohol brand websites (5/15, 33%) required users to enter their age or date of birth before viewing website content. Both websites for tobacco brands (2/15, 13%) further required that users register and verify their age and identity to access any website content and agree that they use tobacco products. Only one website (1/15, 7%) allowed users to display, download, copy, distribute, and translate the website content as long as it was for personal and not commercial use. A total of 33% (5/15) of TOS unconditionally prohibited or put substantial restrictions on all of these activities and/or failed to specify if they were allowed or prohibited. Moreover, 87% (13/15) of TOS indicated that website access could be restricted at any time. A total of 73% (11/15) of websites specified that violating TOS could result in deleting user content from the website, revoking access by having the user’s Internet Protocol address blocked, terminating log-in credentials, or enforcing legal action resulting in civil or criminal penalties. Conclusions TOS create complications for public health surveillance related to e-marketing on brand websites. Recent court opinions have reduced the risk of federal criminal charges for violating TOS on public websites, but this risk remains unclear for private websites. The public health community needs to establish standards to guide and protect researchers from the possibility of legal repercussions related to such efforts.

Background Most patients use the internet to search for health information. While there is a vast repository of searchable information online, much of the content is unregulated and therefore potentially incorrect, conflicting, or confusing. Abortion information online is particularly prone to being inaccurate as antichoice websites publish purposefully misleading information in formats that appear as neutral resources. To understand how antichoice websites appear neutral, we need to understand the specific website features of antichoice websites that impart an impression of trustworthiness. Objective We sought to identify the characteristics of false or misleading abortion websites that make these websites appear trustworthy to the public. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional study using Amazon’s Mechanical Turk platform. We used validated questionnaires to ask participants to rate 11 antichoice websites and one neutral website identified by experts, focusing on website content, creators, and design. We collected sociodemographic data and participant views on abortion. We used a composite measure of “mean overall trust” as our primary outcome. Using correlation matrices, we determined which website characteristics were most associated with mean overall trust. Finally, we used linear regression to identify participant characteristics associated with overall trust. Results Our analytic sample included 498 participants aged from 22 to 70 years, and 50.1% (247/493) identified as female. Across 11 antichoice websites, creator confidence (“I believe that the creators of this website are honest and trustworthy”) had the highest correlation coefficient (strongest relationship) with mean overall trust (coefficient=0.70). Professional appearance (coefficient=0.59), look and feel (coefficient=0.59), perception that the information is created by experts (coefficient=0.59), association with a trustworthy organization (coefficient=0.58), valued features and functionalities (coefficient=0.54), and interactive capabilities (coefficient=0.52) all demonstrated strong relationships with mean overall trust. At the individual level, prochoice leaning was associated with higher overall trust of the neutral website (B=−0.43, 95% CI −0.87 to 0.01) and lower mean overall trust of the antichoice websites (B=0.52, 95% CI 0.05 to 0.99). Conclusions The mean overall trust of antichoice websites is most associated with design characteristics and perceived trustworthiness of website creators. Those who believe that access to abortion should be limited are more likely to have higher mean overall trust for antichoice websites.

Abstract Introduction: As modern medicine has decreased mortality rates of children with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD), patients with SCD are living into adulthood and transitioning to adult care. However transition for these patients has proven to be a vulnerable time. Thus, it is important to prepare youth adequately for chronic care transition through expectations, knowledge, skills, efficacy, and support. The advancement of the Internet has provided patients a primary source to search and gather health-related knowledge. Internet usage is almost ubiquitous among American youth with 92% of them accessing the Internet regularly. Previous studies have shown a wide spectrum in the quality of information available on the Internet. Yet, to the best of our knowledge, a systematic review of online health information regarding transition of patients with SCD has not been conducted. Methods: Data were collected in December 2017 and January 2018 using the 5 search engines that have been identified as being most commonly utilized. Keywords were selected to represent phrases that people may use while searching for information on the Internet regarding SCD transition. Combinations of the keywords were used in the searches, and the first 20 links for each search term were considered in our study. Incognito window was used so that previous searches did not influence the results from the search engines. Websites that met the required inclusion/ exclusion criteria were included in this study. Websites were divided as SCD transition or non-SCD transition specific websites based on whether they mentioned sickle cell disease or not. Websites were classified as academic/educational institution, health department, hospital/private clinician, professional body, or other (includes Wiki, WebMD, and etc). Flesch Reading Ease (FRE) Score was used to evaluate website readability. A novel 12-item transition-specific content tool was produced to evaluate website content. Website quality was evaluated by assessing for the presence or absence of the HONcode certification and using the EQIP tool. A high quality website was defined as having an EQIP Score ≥ 75% in this study. Website quality and content was scored by two research assistants employed in the General Pediatrics department at Northwell Health. Statistical analysis was performed using Excel and online tools. A p-value <0.05 was the criterion for statistical significance. Results: Using the combination of keywords decided, 9522 websites were identified using the selected search engines. Of the 9522 websites, 157 eligible websites met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed. 92 websites were SCD specific links and 65 websites were non-SCD specific links. 27 websites had a HONCode certification issued to them. Only 1 non-SCD website and 26 SCD specific websites had HONCode certifications. The average EQIP score was 59.0 ± 3.0. The average EQIP score for SCD specific websites was 56.9 ± 5.2 and was 61.1 ± 5.0 for non-SCD specific websites. Based on the cutoff value of an EQIP score ≥ 75%, 6 SCD specific websites and 13 non-SCD specific websites are of high quality. The interrater reliability in EQIP ratings was good (Pearson correlation: 0.660). The average FRE score was 49.0 ± 4.0. The average FRE score was 51.9 ± 13.7 for SCD specific websites and 46.1 ± 15.8 for non-SCD specific websites. The average website content score was 28.6 ± 10.7. The average website content score was 21.0 ± 7.1 for SCD specific websites and 36.1 ± 10.2 for non-SCD specific websites. The results of the two tailed t-test indicated that FRE scores between HONCode certified and non-HONCode certified websites were significant for among SCD websites as well as among combined SCD and non-SCD websites (p < 0.05). All identified websites will also be reviewed by two physicians who specialize in caring for young adults with chronic illnesses. Analyses from their review will be conducted prior to the conference. Conclusion: Although seeking health care information online is very common, the overall quality of information about sickle cell disease transition on the Internet is poor. Steps should be taken to make changes that will allow for adequate online healthcare information regarding sickle cell disease transition. By doing this, youth going through transition will be prepared by having competent expectations, knowledge, skills, efficacy, and support available on the Internet.
