Streszczenie:
One of the latest technologies to garner attention from the food world is the Web site Kickstarter, and it has already affected the restaurant industry in a number of ways. The Web site is a crowd-funding platform for “creative projects” in multiple disciplines–several restaurant owners have already used Kickstarter to raise capital toward opening and sustaining restaurants. The Kickstarter team's definition for a “creative project” is vague at best, and patterns have already emerged that raise questions about whether restaurants are an appropriate type of project to harness this platform. So far, three patterns have taken shape: the neighborhood restaurant, the philanthropic restaurant, and the experimental spot, as evidenced by Colonie in Brooklyn, Mission Chinese Food and Commonwealth in San Francisco, and What Happens When in New York, respectively. While restaurants use many creative elements, they also are businesses at the core. Thus, the best restaurant-oriented candidates for Kickstarter are those who aim to go beyond the conventional expectations of what a restaurant should provide. Ideally they will use Kickstarter's crowd-sourced funds to bring more to the community than what the charge for on the plate.

According to one prominent account of intellectual humility, it consists primarily of a disposition to “own” one’s intellectual limitations. This account has been criticized for neglecting the interpersonal dimensions of intellectual humility. We expect intellectually humble persons to be respectful and generous with their interlocutors and to avoid being haughty or domineering. I defend the limitations-owning account against this objection. I do so in two ways: first, by arguing that some of the interpersonal qualities associated with intellectual humility are qualities expressive of virtues other than intellectual humility; and second, by arguing that, when properly described, the kind of limitations-owning characteristic of intellectual humility in fact is robustly interpersonal. The result is a considerably broader and richer notion of the limitations the owning of which is characteristic of intellectual humility.

There are resources in Heidegger’s work for identifying and mitigating pervasive modes of misrecognition that are characteristic of modern society, and, by identifying them, we become capable of attending to “supplementary” aspects of authenticity: terms of identity should apply to all in the same way, and, because these terms are a product of all, they are the responsibility of each individual. The first section analyses Being-guilty, Dasein-with, and Being-with to emphasise Dasein’s dependence on others, arguing that the dynamic of recognition characteristic of Dasein implies a responsibility for recognising the other adequately. The second identifies common modes of misrecognition, arguing that these modes imply a shared responsibility for the contexts of recognition in which we participate. The third turns to Sartre’s work, arguing that our interpersonal relations offer resources for correcting our inadequate ways of recognizing one another and for recognizing the fundamental place of communication in the realization of human freedom.

AbstractThis essay attempts to clarify the distinction between property and sovereignty, and to bring out the importance of that distinction to a liberal nationalism. Beginning with common intuitions about what distinguishes our rights to our possessions from the state's rightful governance over us, it proceeds to explore some historical sources of these intuitions, and the importance of a sharp distinction between ownership and governance to the rise of liberalism. From here, the essay moves into an exploration of group ownership, and the ways in which group ownership can in practice turn into an illiberal kind of sovereignty The point is to shed new light on problems that nationalist states — states purporting to represent or foster a particular group identity — characteristically face. Examples of these problems, from the Israel/Palestine conflict, are put forth in the conclusion.

Recently, as the level of public awareness about cultural heritage has improved, the need for more effective cultural heritage education programs is increasing. In this study, we analyzed all cases of cultural heritage 3D puzzle experiential education, which has recently been in the limelight in the face of the COVID-19 situation. Based on the results, a new way of undertaking cultural heritage education programs was attempted by operating a 3D puzzle experience and education program at Jeongeup Museong Seowon for in Jeongeup City elementary school students. The educational effects of the 3D puzzle experience are (1) a sense of achievement felt by participating students, (2) increased pride in the local cultural heritage felt by family members and the local community by owning the finished product. In addition, appropriate lectures and experiential education by professional instructors was appropriately arranged in consideration of the level of the students, and it was confirmed that the effect of the class is doubled when the students adopt the method of directly exploring the cultural heritage or watching related videos.

AbstractModern and ancient historians have long been willing to engage in the comparative analysis of ancient and modern slave-owning societies, yet archaeologists of both the Greek and Roman worlds have been far less willing to do the same. To the extent that they study slavery at all, they do so almost entirely within Graeco-Roman spatial and temporal confines. Taking Roman slavery as its starting point, this contribution attempts to remove some of the hurdles that archaeologists have placed in the way of a comparative analysis of slavery, and offers some suggestions for new ways forward.

Streszczenie:
Land is essential for every human activity on earth as it is the source of all material wealth. In order to regulate the ownership, use and development of land and land resources, nations over the world have instituted land ownership systems aimed at consistent balancing of the interests of the government, the land owning class and the landless class. This paper examines the parallel nature of statutory and customary land ownership in Cameroon, how it has evolved over the years until 1974 when a single land law, otherwise known as the 1974 Land Ordinance, which were established to harmonize and regulate land ownership in the country. The paper further contends that the present land ownership system in Cameroon as found in the ordinance is advocating inclinations with excessive state control of land ownership, use and development. In connection with our above objectives, we adopted an in-depth content analysis, which is based on primary and secondary sources of data collection imperative to the study. The paper concludes that such land system cannot effectively support the indigenes and development initiatives as it creates too much bureaucracy in land transactions, land registration and land titling. It recommends an urgent balance between the statutory and customary land ownership to facilitate access to land with ease for various purposes.

This thesis critically explores the issue of access to biological resources and Indigenous knowledge Historically, biological resources collected and documented, and knowledge associated with their use, have been considered the 'common heritage of mankind' The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) changed this understanding to tights of states over biological resources, but also gave rise to issues of equity and justice, especially with regard to Indigenous Nations encapsulated within First World states-so-called 'Fourth World Nations', A central concern of Fourth World Peoples is their marginalisation within access negotiations, despite their claims of connate (birth) rights to r esou.r ces and knowledge they identify as their own. Increasing global Indigenous activism over their concerns, has in turn raised an increasingly important policy gap that is becoming recognised in fora and processes with regard to access to biological resources. My thesis addresses this policy gap. I explore some of the complex historical, political and cultural dimensions that led to the emergence and resilience of this policy problem The failure to address the concerns of Indigenous peoples, and Fourth World Nations in particular, is more important and problematic now because of contemporary biotechnological developments and the emergence of bioprospecting. Bioprospecthg refers to the practice of appropriating biological resources, and Indigenous knowledge of those resources, and incorporating them into biopharmaceutical processes. Literature on bioprospecting as a problematic issue for Third World States has been emerging steadily over the last decade under the impact of the commercialisation of biodiversity, which has become big business for biopha.rmaceutical companies. The unique interests and experiences of Fourth World Nations are not recognised within this literature as significantly different to that of the Third World, and of their encapsulating states.. This study has addressed this significant gap by utilising and developing an analytical approach that uses Fourth World theory, synthesised with elements of Foucault's analytics of power. When combined, these two theoretical approaches provide a new and rich under standing of how dominant 'ways of knowing' and 'ways of owning' have been privileged, while other knowledge and ownership systems have been, and continue to be, marginalised, Eoucault's understanding of discursive power as having the capability to be either, or both, dominant and resistant is important to my analysis, as it accommodates the Fourth World as a discursive site of resistance to dominant power. I posit that richer insights are gained through the development and application of this theoretical framework to the issue of fair and equitable access to biological resources, than other approaches offer. I demonstrate the framework's utility by applying it to a case study on bioprospecting in Australia. Important findings have emerged while tracking the activities of Fourth World peoples on the international stage, and their attempts to challenge dominant power/knowledge structures within political institutions For example, participation at the international level has enabled Fomth World peoples to apply pressure on their encapsulating states to accommodate their interests. This has been furthered through forming alliances with, for example, environmentalists, and through the adoption of the language of effective participation within international fora.. Overall, however, the study found that the participation of Eourth World peoples within international, central state and local state policy processes is not always empowering in challenging dominant interests Instead, the more accurate impression is that at this stage of the discursive policy terrain, it may only create an illusion of participation that actually serves to entrench their disempowerment. This places pressule on policy processes to address and resolve this access issue equitably if social turbulence is to subside, justice be served, and certainty provided for all.

This study aimed to assess changes in the productive activities of Afro Colombian rural women due to the expansion of oil palm plantation in their territories. This expansion is a result of global dynamics of territorialization of capital in rural areas through the purchase and ownership of lands by private investors in order to install large monocrop plantations, infrastructure projects and/or mineral exploration. For which investors have been supported by national governments through the readjustment of agricultural policies that allow them to interfere in local territories. Latin American countries, including Colombia, have not been exempt from global dynamics. This country has increased areas of palm oil plantation to serve exportation purposes during the last two decades, which has led to transformation in the means of living of rural and ethnic communities, due to the physical and symbolic occupation of their territories and the appropriation of their resources, including land and water, from which communities derive their sustenance. These transformations are presented differently on rural women, because of the patriarchal-capitalist and discriminatory societies in which they live, where their voice and recognition to both productive and reproductive aspects are made invisible, as well as their rights to the ownership of the productive assets. Situations that leave them in a more vulnerable condition of impoverishment and dependence. We carried out a qualitative study in the municipality Maríalabaja which is located in Northern Colombia. This town used to produce large quantity and variety of food before 1998 when the setting-up of oil palm plantation started. In addition, the majority of its population considers themselves farmers and has suffered the Colombian internal armed conflict. We aimed to describe the activities carried out by women belonging to farmers' organizations before and after the setting-up of oil palm plantation, and to assess transformations experienced by them in their means of living, ways of resistance and challenges they currently face to remain in the territory.

Modernity arrived in Japan, as elsewhere, through new forms of ownership. In A Fictional Commons, Michael K. Bourdaghs explores how the literary and theoretical works of Natsume Sōseki (1867–1916), widely celebrated as Japan's greatest modern novelist, exploited the contradictions and ambiguities that haunted this new system. Many of his works feature narratives about inheritance, thievery, and the struggle to obtain or preserve material wealth while also imagining alternative ways of owning and sharing. For Sōseki, literature was a means for thinking through—and beyond—private property. Bourdaghs puts Sōseki into dialogue with thinkers from his own era (including William James and Mizuno Rentarō, author of Japan’s first copyright law) and discusses how his work anticipates such theorists as Karatani Kōjin and Franco Moretti. As Bourdaghs shows, Sōseki both appropriated and rejected concepts of ownership and subjectivity in ways that theorized literature as a critical response to the emergence of global capitalism.

This chapter explores the Don Newcombe's lawsuit against Coors Brewing Company Newcombe played in the Negro baseball leagues until 1949, when the Brooklyn Dodgers signed him after Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in 1947. He had a stellar career, winning the Most Valuable Player award, the Cy Young Award, and the Rookie of the Year award. However, his career in Major League Baseball was cut short in 1960, in part because of a continuing battle with alcohol. Eventually, Newcombe acknowledged his problem, and, as a recovering alcoholic, he served as a spokesman for the National Institute on Drug and Alcohol Abuse. As an anti-alcohol advocate, Newcombe was shocked when he discovered an advertisement for Killian's Irish Red Beer (a brand produced by Coors Brewing) that featured a drawing of an old-time baseball game in which the pitcher was a recognizable version of Newcombe. He sued Coors for a violation of his right of publicity but lost in the federal district court. Despite that decision, the Ninth Circuit of the U.S. Court of Appeals agreed with Newcombe and overturned the lower court, establishing that celebrity athletes had the right to choose how their image was used in advertising and allowing them to disassociate themselves from products they found distasteful.

Americans wrote fiercely during their civil war. War surprised, devastated, and opened up imagination, taking hold of Americans’ words as well as their homes and families. The personal diary—wildly ragged yet rooted in day following day—was one place Americans wrote their war. Diaries, then, have become one of the best-known, most-used sources for exploring the life of the mind in a war-torn place and time. Delving into several familiar wartime diaries kept by women of the southern slave-owning class, Steven Stowe recaptures their motivations to keep the days close even as war tore apart the brutal system of slavery that had benefited them. Whether the diarists recorded thoughts about themselves, their opinions about men, or their observations about slavery, race, and warfare, Stowe shows how these women, by writing the immediate moment, found meaning in a changing world. In studying the inner lives of these unsympathetic characters, Stowe also explores the importance—and the limits—of historical empathy as a condition for knowing the past. He demonstrates how the plain, first-draft text of a diary can offer new ways to make sense of the world in which these Confederate women lived.

This book shows how the divine was an active participant in the economic spheres of the ancient Mediterranean world. Gods and goddesses were represented as owning goods, holding accounts, and producing wealth. The book argues that early Christ-followers also used financial language to articulate and imagine their relationship to the divine. It takes seriously the overlapping of themes such as poverty, labor, social status, suffering, cosmology, and eschatology in material evidence from the ancient Mediterranean and early Christian texts. The book begins with an overview of theo-economics, which is an intertwined theological and economic logic in which divine and human beings regularly enter into transactions with one another. It then moves on to discuss some of the contexts in which the gods and humans transacted in antiquity. The book examines the theo-economics of Philippians 1, with some consideration of Philippians 4, and moves on to evaluate Philippians 2–3. The book concludes that by taking seriously the ways in which persons in antiquity understood themselves to be participating in transactions with the divine, one can begin to break down some of the scholarly categories that separate theology from economics.

AbstractThe pandemic has hit the tourism industry in various ways. P2P accommodation (P2PA) is one of most disrupted sectors. Different types of P2PA hosts are confronting different levels of challenges. From an angle of social equity, the study adopted a resilience model to examine the resilience of P2PA hosts’ business during the first COVID outbreak in Florida, USA. Statistical results show P2PA hosts’ business resilience negatively associates with their housing liability and hosting experience. Social superiority in owning more assets can be a defect in coping with COVID crisis. P2PA operators need to maintain an appropriate level of financial flexibility when faced with the threat of COVID outbreaks. We suggest the government and industrial organizations to distinguish the types of P2PA operators when carrying out rescue plans for the industry.

AbstractResolving to share one’s narrative may empower a person to own and appreciate their personal experiences and encourage fellow marginalized community members to become empowered by owning their own narratives. Respecting people, hearing their stories, and inviting them to share their stories with people with similar lived experiences can become both a reflector of, and contributor to, community empowerment. In this paper, we present a narrative from a woman experiencing major depressive disorder and Type 2 Diabetes. Her personal reflection describes how she came to understand her lived experience and the ways in which social factors impacted her health, and how this understanding contributed to her ongoing healing process. Her work as a Certified Peer Specialist illustrates the ability of her narrative to empower other marginalized community members and inform health interventions. Rather than imposing solutions without community engagement, public health interventions should resonate with the values and voices of community members and stakeholders. When both speaker empowerment and listening are taken into account, public health can avoid harm, maximize positive outcomes, and treat storytellers fairly, as autonomous partners in their own health and the health of their community.

This chapter examines whether and how malign motives can convert the otherwise innocent exercise of a property right into a civil wrong. As a doctrinal matter, courts have been willing to grant that motives do indeed matter in certain cases. Tracking a distinction drawn within the theory of rights proper between specificationism and generalism, this chapter imagines two ways of making sense of this phenomenon: one might liken property rights to a lattice wherein they are defined permanently at the outset to exclude badly motivated conduct, or one might instead analogize them to a blanket in which holes can be cut around badly motivated acts piecemeal. The chapter opts for the second conceptualization because it meshes better with property’s in rem aspect—they “cover” all cases, one might say—and the organic way property rights evolve. Motives rarely alter property rights, but by factoring in the owner’s incivility as well as victims’ interests and broader social interests, exceptional cases come into focus that illuminate the structure of property rights.

Standing watch over San Francisco Bay, Ring Mountain lies just a short stretch north of the Golden Gate Bridge. The mountain rises from the Tiburon Peninsula, lined with exclusive residential communities and one of San Francisco’s most desirable suburbs. The slopes of Ring Mountain are exclusive in another sense as well: Here lives the world’s sole population of the Tiburon mariposa lily (Calochortus tiburonemis). Found in the open grasslands near the summit of the mountain, this attractive flower grows only on an unusual rock type known as serpentine for its slick, scalelike, blue-green appearance. A product of California’s restless geology, these rock formations also support several other rare plant species, including the Tiburon paintbrush (Castilleja affinis ssp. Neglecta) and Tiburon jewelflower (Streptanthus niger). While serpentine occurs elsewhere in California and beyond, the Tiburon mariposa lily does not. The view from atop Ring Mountain, a spectacular vista of water, mountains, and skyscrapers, would fetch top dollar for residential development. Bulldozers may well have overrun this unique piece of real estate if The Nature Conservancy had not purchased and managed it as a nature preserve. In buying the land on Ring Mountain, the Conservancy also bought the earth’s entire population of the Tiburon mariposa lily. This created a weighty responsibility, but it also freed the organization to take any action necessary to ensure the survival of this flower and Ring Mountain’s other rare species. Ownership offers the most direct and absolute way to offer conservation to those plants and animals inhabiting a piece of land. On the other hand, land ownership also conveys rights that allow management of property in ways not nearly so beneficial to our native species. Of the four basic strategies for biodiversity conservation discussed in the previous chapter, three relate directly to land: owning and managing land; regulating land use; and influencing land use through nonregulatory means. If we are to understand not only the current condition of species and ecosystems in the United States but also the opportunities and challenges for their long-term protection, we must also understand how the underlying natural patterns relate to the patterns of land ownership and management that have been laid atop them.

In 2019, with more than three quarters of Americans and Britons and two thirds of Chinese citizens owning and using a smartphone, smartphone technology and its applications are shifting the ways we think about and interact with death, such as relates to holding funerals, mourning losses, and planning for dying. Last, the chapter examines the ways in which COVID-19 has fast-forwarded both the adoption and utilization of digital tools in deathspaces.

Investors owning General Bank shares had no direct way of monitoring the secret and opaque strategies conducted by the bank. Indeed, the bank itself did not always assess properly its risks and costs. Only after having launched these innovative products did it try to devise ways of counting them and measuring their costs. The previous eight chapters have illuminated the ways in which women of color—diasporic subjects, immigrants, Black American women—are produced and reproduced continually as neocolonial subjects. Although the analysis is centered on Muslim women as a racialized category in and of itself, the dynamics are a representation of ways in which non-white women are treated through a series of policies, laws, and amendments in the name of a liberal order that emerges from a colonial, slave-owning past, even when that order has claimed to cut ties with that past. To challenge that continual suspicion directed toward neocolonial subjects, women of color must aspire to certain cultural comportments. They are expected to aspire to the prevailing norms of the modern moment—to be modern. In order to see these expectations, one must listen to the silences: to what is not said as well as to what is said.

For decades, schools of architecture have included hands-on education in their curricula in the form of design-build studios; often these studio experiences are guided by a social mission and employ participatory methods. In other cases, university community design centers provide opportunities for students to engage with community members on real-world projects. My own academic experience (which was far from unusual) involved the former, beginning with a summer studio focused on asset-based community development and participatory engagement framed within a design-build experience that launched me on a career-long path. Being confronted with a profession that conducts business as usual while academia is grooming a generation of socially responsible architects is jarring for new graduates . Today’s professionals approaching mid-career are unsatisfied with outdated business models that do not address contemporary concerns about social impact. Barriers to participatory engagement in practice include hourly billing that discourages clients from commissioning non-mandatory stakeholder engagement, as well as a culture of pro-bono work that ultimately accelerates burnout and devalues professional services. New ways of thinking require new ways of doing business. Today’s practitioners are seeking more sustainable methods of integrating the participatory strategies they employed in academia into contemporary practice. Drawing on extensive research conducted on the history of community design during my Master of Architecture, and using illustrations from my own path—from a student during the post-Katrina era to owning a community design practice—I propose strategies for challenging current models of practice. Specifically, I demonstrate how my current work with private landowners and nonprofit economic development groups incorporates participatory methods learned during my academic experience, borrowing from an interdisciplinary range of sources, including anthropology, sociology, and planning, as well as others who are disrupting the status quo of delivering creative services.

Market-based pipeline projects are initiated by the pipeline-owning company and require focused attempts to secure a customer or develop a market for the product transportation. The development of Market-based pipeline investments in the international arena has fundamental differences from projects sponsored by consumer or pipeline user needs, government endeavors or producers desiring to sell their product. Whereas these User-driven projects were the traditional way of developing projects in the past, current global political and economical trends are forcing private pipeline companies to develop new ways of creating business opportunities: the development of Market-based Pipeline Projects. A proactive strategy for developing energy transmission businesses (i.e. market-based projects) involves finding sufficient energy users and linking them with pipeline infrastructure to viable supplies of natural gas. These Market-based business opportunities are uniquely developed and require strong corporate vision and support before it can be successfully implemented. This paper will provide an insight to the challenges, risks and uncertainties to be faced when developing Market-based pipeline projects. The discussion focuses on the project development phase of the project, from the moment the business opportunity viability has been confirmed to the time when the decision is made to proceed with large capital commitments. The paper includes a description of the pipeline project development process and a review of the variables influencing important steps and decisions prior to commencement of project implementation and hence capital investments. While the content of this paper is mostly applicable to all types of pipeline projects, the discussion will focus on natural gas transmission pipelines.

The lubrication mechanism is proposed due to forming hydration layer among these nano-sheets with plenty of bond water molecules. The excellent lubrication property has obvious application for the fabrication of glossy pill coated by such kind of mucilage, which would prevent pill lodging in people’s throat, especially for children.

Abstract In the case of internal grinding of a deep hole, the inner surface of the hole was ground by a slender grinding wheel that has a high aspect ratio. A slender grinding wheel is bent by the normal grinding force during the grinding process. Therefore, the form accuracy of the ground workpiece is decreased especially when the aspect ratio of a wheel is high. In our previous study, it was confirmed that the biggest factor that generated the form error of the workpiece was the elastic deformation owning to the normal grinding force. To reduce the form error of the ground workpiece, it is effective to expand the spark-out duration. However, the expansion of the spark-out duration leads to the low productivity. In this study, the form of the grinding wheel was modified by a diamond dresser to improve the form accuracy of the workpiece without expanding the spark-out duration. The modified form of a wheel was determined to compensate the form error of the workpiece generated by the elastic deformation of the grinding wheel. Thorough several grinding experiment, it was confirmed that the form accuracy of the ground workpiece was successfully improved by modifying the form of a slender grinding wheel without expanding the spark-out duration.

Abstract Motorcycles have been a mode of transportation since 1894, when the first batch of motorcycles were manufactured for consumer use by Hildebrand & Wolfmüller. Motorcycles provide a fast and cost effective, specifically fuel economy, way to commute. They are also used in recreational settings such as motocross and performance racing activities. Over the years, there have been many different design generations for the various manufactures and custom shops. The customer demand for motorcycles is always increasing as well. However, the biggest drawback to someone owning and operating a motorcycle has always been safety concerns. One of these safety concerns is the motorcycle falling over and being damaged while being parked. Fall overs occur for a multitude number of reasons, the most common occurrences due to being parked on an uneven level or someone pushing the motorcycle over. Current safety devices to prevent this from occurring are crash bars and center stands. However, these devices are either not applicable to all motorcycle makes and models or do not appeal to the motorcycles look per the owner’s discretion. A “no fall over” automated mechanical kickstand would solve both of these problems and, at the same time, prevent fall over accidents.

In the paper, three kinds of specimens including two GMT which have glass fiber weight percent 40 and 20 wt% respectively and a LFT (normal long fiber reinforced thermoplastics PP) which has glass fiber 40wt% were fabricated and tensile tested. The mean fiber length of GMT and LFT were 6.67 and 1.37 mm, respectively. For tensile test, it was observed that the modulus of 40GMT and 40LFT were similar. However, it was found that 40GMT specimens have better tensile strength than 40LFT specimens. In the case of different glass fiber content, 40GMT had more than two times higher value than 20GMT in both tensile modulus and tensile strength. Referring to the effect of hole on the tensile property of GMT and LFT, it was found that the notched tensile strength of both GMT and LFT decrease when W/d equal to 2.0. On the other hand, for W/d equal to 2.5 and 3.0 have no effect to tensile strength.

Abstract In the last decades, an unprecedented decrease in fertility and mortality rates in industrialized countries yielded a general ageing of the population. Such phenomenon affected the everyday life of individuals as well as organizations, either government or private, to the point that they are nowadays seeking the solution to the increasing demand of health care, housing, care-giving, and social security. In this scenario, this piece of research aims to fulfil a design task, specifically oriented towards the field of assistance machines. The functionalities which should be guaranteed are mainly two: to follow and monitor reduced mobility subjects, to maintain a constant view contact with its targets, and to accomplish such duties in a non-structured and possibly peopled environment. In particular, the paper analyses the dynamics of Paquitop, a novel over-actuated mobile platform, aiming for a proper design strategy for its suspensions system. The main peculiarity of the robot is that of owning an innovative architecture expressly conceived to enhance the performance offered by the present-day solutions for omni-directional planar motions. Given its purpose, the robot architecture was thought for guaranteeing an effective fulfilment of its primary tasks. This arises a set of uncharted challenges, under both mechanical and control points of view.

As an energy absorption member, fiber-reinforced composites (FRPs) are more favorable because they are light in weight and possess better energy absorption capabilities as compared to their metal counterparts. However, the energy absorbing mechanisms of FRP are complicated owning to the multi-micro fractures. Therefore, in this study, the designs of FRP tubes were carried out with considerations directed at the energy absorbing mechanisms. Two methods based on the design of the energy absorbed by bending of the fronds (Ubend) and the energy absorbed by fiber fractures (Uff) are concentrated. Here the bending behavior of frond can be considered as the bending beam by an external force. And it is found that Ubend is affected directly by the inertia moment I, which is affect by the geometry. Therefore, FRP tubes were fabricated to have a geometry combined with a bigger I. Additional, in order to get more fiber fractures to get an increased Uff, the design of bending stress, σ, was carried out. FRP tubes bending towards one side only rather than two sides are proposed to get bending fronds with a double thicker thickness, which in turn led to high stresses, many fiber fractures and high energy absorption.

The major US household travel surveys do not ask the right questions to understand mobility in Walkable Neighborhoods. Yet few subjects can be more important for sustainability and real economic growth based on all things of value, including sustainability, affordability, and quality of life. Walkable Neighborhoods are a system of land use, transportation, and transportation pricing. They are areas with attractive walking distances of residential and local business land uses of sufficient density to support enough business and transit, with mobility comparable to suburbia and without owning an auto. Mobility is defined as the travel time typically spent to reach destinations outside the home, not trips among other destinations that are not related to the home base. A home round trip returns home the same day, a way of defining routine trips based on the home location. Trip times and purposes, taken together, constitute travel time budgets and add up to total travel time in the course of a day. Furthermore, for Walkable Neighborhoods, the analysis focuses on the trips most important for daily mobility. Mismeasurement consists of including trips that are not real trips to destinations outside the home, totaling 48 percent of trips. It includes purposes that are not short trips functional for walk times and mixing of different trips into single purposes, resulting in even less useful data. The surveys do not separate home round trips from other major trip types such as work round trips and overnight trips. The major household surveys collect vast amounts of information without insight into the data needed for neighborhood sustainability. The methodology of statistics gets in the way of using statistics for the deeper insights we need. Household travel surveys need to be reframed to provide the information needed to understand and improve Walkable Neighborhoods. This research makes progress on the issue, but mismeasurement prevents a better understanding of the issue.
