Streszczenie:
Frederick Douglass (1818–95) was not the only fugitive from American slavery to visit Scotland before the Civil War, but he was the best known and his impact was far-reaching. In 1846 his stunning oratory drew enthusiastic crowds from Ayr to Aberdeen who came to hear him promote his new autobiography and deliver the abolitionist message. Although the main part of the book is framed by accounts of the racist discrimination Douglass faced on both his outward and return sea voyages, it does not offer a chronological narrative of his speaking engagements in Scotland. Rather, each of the three central chapters focus on a different set of encounters with notable Scots in order to demonstrate the vital role they played in the transformation of Douglass from a subordinate envoy of a white-run abolitionist society to an independent antislavery campaigner in his own right. In particular, they prompted far-reaching changes in his styles of speaking and writing, in his choice of heroes and how he identified with them, and in the new fervour with which he attempted to control the way he was represented verbally and pictorially. Situated at the intersection of biography, history and literature, it applies literary techniques of close reading to materials normally treated as historical documents, such as letters and newspaper reports, in order to draw out the subtleties of Douglass's changing attitudes, ideas and affiliations.

Streszczenie:
Using case records of prosecutions at the Scottish High Court of Justiciary between 1918 and 1930, this book takes a quantitative and qualitative approach to understand sexual violence in Scotland at this time. Analysing legal records alongside victim and witness testimonies, Louise Heren analyses who committed sexual violence against whom, where and how and, to an extent, looks to uncover the victims’ voice. Assessing how the courts responded, Sex and Violence in 1920s Scotland reveals that, despite pejorative views of working-class female behaviour, the successful conversion of prosecutions to convictions was greater than what is seen in modern sexual assault cases. In a society adjusting to post-conflict stresses, there were fears expressed in middle-class circles that those most affected by the First World War might react with violence. However, the High Court archives suggest otherwise. Cases of incest, rape and sexual assault appears to have been endemic, an opportunistic crime against older victims yet often pre-meditated against the youngest; selfish crimes that suggest toxic masculinity among some working-class men. The book concludes with the ultimate question: why did these men perpetrate sexual violence?

Streszczenie:
The aim of this chapter is to set out what we know of the tensions within Scots law, between law and Scottish society, and between Scots and English law during the last two and a half centuries of Stewart rule. It seeks to explain the distinctive aspects of Scots law and its context by exploring some of the many historical areas that a combination of law and literature can illuminate. The intention is to help readers familiar only with England to break down assumptions about what was normal, natural, or even normative, by drawing comparisons between countries whose fortunes slowly converged, but whose society, politics, religion, culture, and law remained quite different.

Streszczenie:
Politics in Scotland has changed massively in recent decades. Since 1999, there has been a devolved Parliament and Government. Scotland is of interest, not because of some essential difference from England but as a European nation, with its own history and society, within the larger union of the United Kingdom. Devolution, once a contested issue, is now broadly accepted. Since devolution, the party system and voting patterns have changed. Scotland’s capacity to make its own public policy has grown. The constitutional issue was not resolved in the Independence Referendum of 2014 and has entered a new phase with Brexit.
