Streszczenie:
Abstract Problem Formal Volunteers in volunteer based organizations drop out at a fast pace due to many reasons like lack of interest what they are doing, conflict among volunteers, lack of motivation, job dissatisfaction due to prolonged volunteering etc.  which is causing to improper functioning of these organizations and reaches a point where these volunteer based organizations find it difficult to function properly. The author in this study tries to address this particular issue of this drop out of formal volunteers. Purpose The purpose of this study is to explore the factors which helps in the retention of formal volunteers in a volunteer based organization for a longer period. Method The research in this paper is done in a qualitative way with primary data collected in the form of participant observation and open interview in two voluntary organizations. The collected data is analyzed in content analysis. The secondary data is collected in the form of necessary documents provided by the participating organizations. Results Many factors were found to influence retention of volunteers namely Job satisfaction, Motivation, Public Service Motivation, Organizational Commitment, Mission Attachment, Work load, Relationship with Coworkers, Justice of Organization, Flexible Timing, Training & Orientation.  Conclusions Recommendations to improve retention is mentioned and a future model is also proposed. The result obtained from this research can be generalized to other form of small scale volunteer organizations where the major employees are formal volunteers.

Streszczenie:
This paper examines factors affecting volunteer labor supply with two specific goals: (1) a reassessment of the model and empirical process outlined by Paul Menchik and Burton Weisbrod using a larger data set from a more recent time period; and (2) an exploration of how volunteer labor supply is affected by liability exposure of volunteers, a factor which Menchik and Weisbrod did not address.Data from a nationwide 1992 poll on volunteering conducted by the Gallup Organization and Independent Sector is applied to the quantitative approach which Menchik and Weisbrod used on data from 1977. Tobit regression analysis finds significance in some variables in the Menchik and Weisbrod model -- including variables relating to gender, offspring, education, religiosity, and parental attitudes to giving. Volunteer liability exposure has been a subject of debate in the U.S. Congress and other public policy arenas, and the Volunteer Liability Protection Act became law in 1997. The volunteer liability factor is measured in two ways -- using the variability of certain legal protections for line volunteers among state laws and using per capita tort filings per state as a "litigousness index." The "litigousness index" variable demonstrated value in predicting volunteer labor supply, which suggests that potential volunteers respond to a more generalized rather than activity-specific threat of lawsuits. Individuals' information searches probably do not go as far as to examine legal provisions affecting their specific activities.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
Volunteers have been present in healthcare settings for centuries, however there is little empirical evidence supporting the impact that volunteers make on hospital performance. Since the 1990s, hospitals in the United States have had a great deal of pressure to produce high quality care at minimum expense. With the pressures of managed care and accrediting agencies, the benefits of using volunteers in a hospital setting are multiplied. Furthermore, as the population of the United States grows and the aging population creates more healthcare needs, the need for volunteers in hospitals may increase. This study utilized multiple regression analysis to explore the belief that the volunteer workforce is cost effective and can greatly enhance quality in a hospital setting. Hospitals throughout the state of Florida were invited to participate in the study by completing a brief questionnaire about their volunteer programs. Performance indicators of profit margin, volunteer cost savings, and patient satisfaction scores were analyzed using American Hospital Association and Agency for Health Care Administration data sets along with data obtained from the questionnaire. Results indicate that the use of volunteers offer significant cost savings to hospitals. Furthermore, the assignment of volunteers in patient settings can enhance a hospital's patient satisfaction scores. It also suggests that there is a need to further explore the impact of volunteers on other performance measures. Future research opportunities and policy recommendations are suggested.

Kyneswood, Benjamin Paul. "How young volunteers learn in practice from established volunteers : an examination of volunteer learning in community radio in the UK". Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2017. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/7809/.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
In this thesis I examined the learning in practice of fourteen young volunteers at four community radio stations in the UK. I queried what learning in practice as a volunteer constituted by examining how the participants accessed support and knowledge from established members, and how practice defined their volunteering and learning. Using an interpretivist methodology applied to private blogs and group interviews, participants recorded their perspectives for between six and nine months. Communities of Practice theory (Lave & Wenger, 1991) was applied to understand how the participants developed their learning relationship with established members. Analysis reveals that established members legitimised participant practice through three phases; an initial phase of broadcasting training where participants began at the periphery of the membership; a second phase of broadcast reviews that sought to develop their relationship with members; and a third phase of non broadcast activities to establish their membership. The relationship between the participants and established members meant the phases were not linear. Participants creatively constructed their broadcasts by developing a fragile, embryonic network of active citizenship (Kenny et al., 2015) to generate community content. In doing so not all participants wanted to establish themselves as members and engage in non-broadcast activities, and drew distinctions between broadcast practice on the periphery and the community development practice of established members. My original contribution to the literature is that by examining volunteering as a learning practice the hidden pressures and conflicts in relationship between newcomers and established members are revealed. I argue that becoming an established member of a voluntary organisation may not be for everyone, but that this does necessarily mean a loss of committed practice to the organisation. Initial volunteering opportunities that are exploratory and creative can establish commitment. I therefore link commitment to practice as a volunteer, rather than as a biographic strategy as suggested elsewhere in the literature.

Andrews, Jane. "Disabled volunteers : an analysis of the experiences of wheelchair-users who volunteer". Thesis, Aston University, 2006. http://publications.aston.ac.uk/10794/.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
Following grounded-theory methodology, this thesis provides an analysis of the volunteering experiences of 47 wheelchair-users. It challenges the traditional image of volunteering which tends to conceptualise non-disabled people as the instigators of voluntary action (the helpers) and disabled people as the recipients of volunteerism (the helped). It also begins to fill a notable gap in academic knowledge about the volunteering experiences of disabled people. The literature review showed that contemporary conceptualisations of disability were unsuitable for this thesis. Thus, an organising framework is proposed which acknowledges that disabled peoples’ experiences may be influenced by medically and socially constructed factors – or by a combination of both acting simultaneously (medical-social factors). Having conceptualised disability for the purposes of the study, the thesis then provides an account of the research methodology used. This is followed by a presentation of research findings. An analysis of the volunteers’ demographic, epidemiological and background characteristics is provided and their perceptions of the benefits of, and barriers to, volunteering highlighted. This is followed by an analysis of their volunteering experiences. Theory is developed in order to explain the volunteers’ experiences from the approach outlined within the organising framework. The final part of the thesis adopts a reflexive approach to contextualise the research processes from the writer’s own perspective as a disabled person conducting research into the lived experiences of other disabled people. The thesis concludes by highlighting the implications of the study for future social research.

Streszczenie:
Understanding volunteer motivation has been widely recognized by both researchers and administrators as a valuable component of program development. Thus, it is important to explore the motivational needs that contribute to Virginia adult 4-H volunteerism. This quantitative research study was designed to fill a gap in the current volunteer literature regarding our understanding of the motivational needs of Virginia adult 4-H volunteers. The following research questions guided this study:
  1. What are the motivations of Virginia adult 4-H volunteers and how are these volunteers distributed in terms of their primary motivational need (power, achievement, or affiliation)?
  2. What is the relationship between motivational needs (power, achievement, and affiliation) and volunteer satisfaction as self-reported by Virginia adult 4-H volunteers?
  3. To what extent are Virginia adult 4-H volunteers motivated to volunteer for Virginia 4-H?
  4. To what extent do motivational needs (power, achievement, and affiliation) differ in urban and rural Virginia adult 4-H volunteers?
  5. What are the most prevalent youth experiences influencing adult 4-H volunteerism in Virginia 4-H?
Data were collected from 296 Virginia 4-H volunteers via a 20-item questionnaire utilizing McClellandâ s Trichotomy of Needs Theory. The results showed that the top three motives for volunteering with Virginia 4-H were within the achievement and power subscales and included to teach and lead others, to improve the community, and to have an influence on how young people learn and grow. Further, a significant positive relationship was revealed between motivational needs (achievement, affiliation, and power) and satisfaction level. Results also indicated that the majority of Virginia adult 4-H volunteers described their current motivational level as â motivated.â Additionally, no significant differences were found between the motivational needs of urban and rural Virginia adult 4-H volunteers and 4-H involvement was the most prevalent youth experience that influenced the decision to volunteer for 4-H. Based on the results of this study, implications and recommendations for practice and further research were suggested.

Streszczenie:
Tourism is a fast growing phenomenon. As every person has a different motivation to travel new and alternative forms of tourism are continuously developing. Depending on form of tourism and the tourist’s motivation to take on a certain trip, the experience has a smaller or bigger impression on the individual. This study examines what influences volunteer trips can have on identities, focusing on volunteers in the organization WWOOF, World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms. To understand the development of identities, theories about identity work have been researched. The material derives from a participant observation and 14 semi-structured interviews that mainly were conducted in Oregon, USA. The analysis of the results reveals four main themes for how the individuals’ identities have changed and what factors that have caused this change. These themes are perceived change, cultural exchange, significance of place, and differences between WWOOFers and other tourists. The study shows that travels, in this case volunteer trips, affect individuals in many ways.
World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms.

This thesis investigates how volunteers are organized at visitor attractions. It focuses on museums and art museums; non-profit institutions that manage large volunteer programs. The study addresses five important issues : 1/ in what context do museums and art museums operate; 2/ why people are motivated to volunteer for these institutions; 3/ what is the extent to which the institution interacts with its external environment and how this affects organizing routines of volunteers; 4/ what is the relationship between volunteer motivation, interest dissatisfaction and value commitments; and 5/ how this understanding can result in the better management of volunteers. Two attractions in New South Wales and one in the Australian Capital Territory were investigated. The author collected data on field activities of volunteer managers and coordinators, and administered a questionnaire to the total population of volunteers in these three attractions. The thesis contributes to a more holistic understanding of volunteers that offers a critical theoretical extension to tourism, institutional and neo-institutional literature.

Streszczenie:
This study focused on the Australian health sector, examining the factors that influence the intention of volunteers to leave their employing organizations. There is a general scarcity of research concerning volunteer work, and understanding health sector volunteers is particularly important due to the significance of their contribution in Australia. In exploring volunteer work, this study has utilized a variant of the Mathieu and Zajac (1990) model of organizational commitment. In the health sector much of the work performed by volunteers is very similar to that done by paid employees. In addition, in the Australian health sector volunteers and paid employees often work alongside one another. The methodology integrated quantitative and qualitative data in order to generate a broad understanding of the factors influencing volunteer intention to leave an organization. Using the Mathieu and Zajac model variant, a hypothesis was developed and investigated. Quantitative data was gathered through the Job Characteristics Index (JCI), General Job Satisfaction Survey, and Organizational Commitment Questionnaire (OCQ). In light of the quantitative findings not supporting the initial hypothesis of job characteristics being antecedent to intention to leave as mediated by job satisfaction and organizational commitment, a grounded theory approach was used to explore the antecedent factors. Qualitative data was gathered through open-ended questions in the survey and interviews. The following relationships were discovered and explored: motivation and job characteristics impacted upon the meaningfulness of volunteer work and upon organizational commitment, which had a covarying relationship with job satisfaction. The job characteristics of task identity, feedback and friendship opportunities were correlated with organizational commitment. In essence, the factors of motivation (recognized as altruism) and meaningfulness of work that volunteers do in the Australian health sector determine how the job characteristics and other factors will influence the decision to leave an organization. The study discusses key findings and presents recommendations for relating to effective management of volunteers in the health sector. As a secondary outcome, the study demonstrates the value of judiciously using models and measures normally associated with paid employment in understanding volunteer activity. It is anticipated that these outcomes will inform future research within the volunteer sector.

Streszczenie:
Abstract Human trafficking is a worldwide crisis, and agencies rely on volunteers to help serve its victims. Past researchers have suggested that motivation to volunteer is multifaceted and that volunteer turnover hinders accomplishing mission objectives. The research question was to examine if there were any differentiating motivations of antitrafficking volunteers from the current literature. This study was a qualitative case study of an antitrafficking religion-sponsored agency in the United States. Self-determination theory guided the research consisting of 7 agency volunteers. Candidates met the established criteria of minimum age and duration of service. The interpretive phenomenological analysis process helped to assess individual data separately and then collectively with participants adding clarification and member checking through follow-up e-mails. The analysis process produced themes about relating to others, work competency, autonomy, sense of obligation, religious motivations, personal satisfaction, recognition, and agency leadership styles as motivators. Their religious affiliation with the agency produced a strong emphasis on spiritual motivations. An element of egocentric motivations emerged as differences from the current volunteering literature. The egocentric motivations emerged from the participant's view that God was watching and their actions brought God's favor to them. Agency leaders need to focus on helping potential and current volunteers feel important as contributors to the spiritual wellbeing of themselves and others. This finding was a key aspect of recruitment and retention of volunteers, who could help this underserved population and thus promote positive social change.

Streszczenie:
Volunteering has been found to play an important role in the lives of older adults. The general beneficial effects of volunteering have been widely established. However an investigation on the specific effect volunteering can have on older adults' perceptions of their abilities has yet to be established. It is important to investigate whether volunteering in later life is positively associated with one's perception of oneself or one's self-efficacy. Individuals with high levels of self-efficacy tend to believe they are more capable of handling stressful situations and are less likely to feel helpless and dependent and thus feel more confident of their ability to function independently. The present study investigates self-efficacy and depression among 87 older volunteers and 84 older non-volunteers. The present study contrasts volunteers and non-volunteers on self-efficacy, depression, age and years of education as the hypothesised dimensions along which volunteers differ from non-volunteers. It is further hypothesised that self-efficacy and depression will be the two factors that best discriminate between volunteers and non-volunteers. The results of the present study support the hypothesis. It found that self-efficacy, depression and age discriminated between volunteers and non-volunteers and that self-efficacy and depression were the two factors that accounted for most of the difference. The results of the present study highlights the importance volunteering may have in fostering self-efficacy in older people. The present study, though exploratory in nature has a number of important implications for promoting independent functioning in later life and improving the quality of life of older people.

Streszczenie:
Motivation is a key factor influencing an individual to become a volunteer. This study examines the motivation Czech volunteers to work on development projects, based on data obtained from the survey and scientific articles. The survey was conducted on 80 Czech volunteers from various Czech NGOs, 40 out of 80 were volunteers working for Kintari organization in Indonesia. The main motivation for volunteering were divided into five sections according to orientation; altruism, culture, philanthropy, traveling and socializing. Differences were identified among respondents when Kintari volunteers chose culture and travel, which is closely related to their length of stay, while volunteers from other Czech NGOs selected altruism and philanthropy. Subsequently, based on the test of factor analysis (FA) was created a domains consisting of the items questionnaire. In the statistical measurements and indicators were using factor analysis which was deemed appropriate, and Cronbach's alpha coefficient, which verified the estimate of the level of internal consistency and Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin measurement to determine the suitability of the selected data. The calculation used t-test for socio-demographic attributes excluded the thesis that females are more altruistically motivated than males. Respondents confirmed altruistic and egoistic gain experience from volunteering, including the development of communication skills, stress management, development of empathic skills, understanding of the local community, opportunities to participate in social events, work in a multicultural team and the ability to be part of social groups. Kintari volunteers cause on the project preferentially associate with opportunities to experience the culture and travel, while other volunteers from the Czech NGOs travelled mainly due to work and own education, which is closely related to the fact that they had more previous experience from other projects. The general rule confirmed that a shorter stay affects more altruism, socialization and desire to travel. As an area of weakness, Kintari volunteers market communication and cooperation with the management organization (missing feedback), and insufficient provision of educational aids.

Streszczenie:
The Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) is a not-for-profit organization that depends heavily on volunteers. As one of many such organizations, the YMCA must continually strive to find the best methods of recruiting and retaining volunteers. Although the field of psychology has done considerable research on what motivates people to engage in helping behavior and Volunteerism, there has been little applied research in this area. There appeared to be a lack of applicable research that would assist YMCA staff in their recruitment and development of volunteers. This present research focused on helping to fill that gap. The purpose of this study was twofold: 1) to determine what factors initially motivate people to volunteer for a YMCA and 2) to determine what factors motivate YMCA volunteers to continue that work. With the aid of a panel of experts, a survey instrument was developed for serve as the data gathering tool. A total of 720 surveys were sent to YMCAs to distribution to volunteers over two different periods of time. The first period, November 1992, 120 surveys were sent to three YMCAs in Kentucky and Tennessee. The second period, September 1995, 600 surveys were distributed to 20 YMCAs in Ohio and Michigan. The volunteers completed a survey providing demographic data on the volunteers, the type of volunteer service they provided, and factors motivating them to volunteer. One hundred and twenty six responses were collected from volunteers representing ten of the selected YMCAs throughout the test region. The data collected from these surveys were analyzed using statistical software. The most frequent participants were males between the ages of 35 to 40 and were married with 2.3 children ranging in age from six months to 14 years. The volunteer was employed and worked 41 or more hours per week. For those respondents who had been volunteering for the YMCA for 15 or more years, the strongest motivating factor was the same as those who had volunteered for less than one year: the individual respondent liked helping people. The second most motivating factor was the same for both groups: caring and concern for others. Based on the findings of the study the researcher recommended the following: YMCA's needing volunteers should ask people to volunteer; YMCA's should emphasize that the volunteer work will help others, improve the community, and is an expression of caring and concern for others; YMCA's should design volunteer positions such that the volunteer is helping others, feels needed and is able to fulfill the position during his/her leisure time. In addition, further research needs to be conducted involving a larger volunteer sample.

The purpose of this study was to examine the primary motives of golf volunteers at the Professional Golf Association (PGA) Championship and Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Solheim Cup event. The current study consisted of eight hundred and seventy seven participants (N=877) which included 470 volunteers from the PGA Championship and 407 volunteers from the Solheim Cup. Participants completed a demographic questionnaire and the Sport Volunteer Motivation Scale prior to serving as a volunteer for the respective golf event. Descriptive statistics revealed purposive motives was the most highly endorsed motive for PGA Championship and Solheim Cup volunteers. External motives proved to be endorsed the least among the participants. The demographic makeup of the volunteer population consisted of 56.3% males and 43.7% females. Respondents ages ranged from 18 to 84 years old, with a mean age of 55.5 years old. In regards to ethnicity, the volunteers were predominantly Caucasian (96.2%) and the majority (75.1%) reported a household income over $75,000. A series of 2 X 2 MANOVA's revealed significant differences by gender, women scored significantly higher than men on purposive, egoistic, external, and leisure motives. Significant differences were found for household income as those with an income of less than $75,000 had higher motives for material, external, leisure, and egoistic factors. Significant differences were also found for age as those younger than 56 years old had higher motives for material, leisure, and egoistic factors. A 2 X 5 MANOVA revealed a significant effect for highest degree earned, for the egoistic motive, volunteers who received a Bachelor's, Associate's, or High School/GED degrees were significantly greater than those volunteers who received a Doctoral degree. Solheim Cup volunteers had significantly higher motives than PGA Championship volunteers for all five factors. The results of the present study indicated the demographic makeup of the volunteer population needs to be examined in relationship to volunteer motivation as volunteers have different motives which must be considered for giving their time, effort, and energy to a respective sport event. Recommendations for future research examining sport event volunteer motives are also discussed.

Streszczenie:
Most sport event organisations rely heavily on the assistance of volunteers to prepare for and stage sport events. The significance of the contribution of sport event volunteers highlights the importance of having good recruitment and management strategies in place for sport event management. As volunteer work is most effective when properly managed, it is important to understand the motivations and characteristics of volunteers and maintain good relationships between volunteers and their organisations in order to increase volunteer satisfaction and intention to continue. Attempts to understand the intricacies regarding sport event volunteerism have received much attention from many published studies. This thesis provides a systematic quantitative review of published articles in English language academic journals on the ‘motivation of sport event volunteers’ and ‘volunteer management in events’. The review examines the nature of the research, methods, key concepts, theories used, and types of research questions formulated in studies associated with the ‘motivation of sport event volunteers’ and ‘volunteer management in events’. Published studies on these topics were geographically concentrated in several countries and have been the focus of increasing research attention in recent years. The majority of the published research was limited by the lack of a clear theoretical framework and most studies used survey methods to collect data from volunteers at mega-sport events. The studies regarding volunteer management frequently utilised volunteer motivation to investigate the influence of motivation on volunteer management practice. By conducting a systematic review, this thesis identified the current status of the literature and the research gaps. It developed a better understanding of approaches that have been adopted to investigate what this thesis sought to find, and highlighted the importance and contributions of this thesis. By addressing these research gaps through a systematic review, on the basis of incentives approach of Knoke and Prensky (1984) and sport fan involvement approach grounded in social identity theory, the first empirical study conducted for this thesis was able to identify specific sport event volunteer motivations and to segment sport event volunteers based on their motivations using exploratory factor analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis on standardised variables. Chi-square tests were then undertaken to explore relationships with other variables. This study investigated the distinct features of four motivation-based volunteer sub-groups (i.e. sport & community enthusiasts, altruists, material benefits seekers, and career & relationship seekers) in terms of their socio-demographics, volunteering-related experiences, and the type of sport event at which they volunteered. The results identified that levels and factors of motivation were different amongst the four volunteer sub-groups and were related to each characteristic of volunteers in the groups. Event organisers might be able to use this understanding of different motivational groups to develop more effective volunteer management strategies. The second empirical study in this thesis investigated sport event volunteer motivation and three psychological contract (PC) types (transactional, relational, and ideological) with regard to the relationship between PC fulfilment, satisfaction and future behavioural intention based on PC theory. By conducting exploratory factor analysis, hierarchical cluster analysis on standardised raw variables, Chi-square tests, frequency analysis, ANOVA test, paired t-tests, correlation analysis and regression analysis, four motivation-based volunteer sub-groups were compared regarding expectations and experiences of PC types, as well as overall satisfaction and intention to continue volunteering. PC fulfilment was investigated to find the impact of PC fulfilment on satisfaction and future behavioural intention. Amongst these volunteer sub-groups, ideological PC tended to be considered as the most important PC type, but different motivations were associated with different PC preferences. Volunteers who had different motivations had varying experiences of PC types, overall satisfaction and intention to continue volunteering. Two operational definitions of PC were investigated: PCFe (PC fulfilment by experience) and PCFg (PC fulfilment by gap). The former simply used the post event ratings of volunteers’ experiences of the fulfilment of the psychological contract, while the latter was based on the gap score between pre-event expectations of PC fulfilment and post-event experiences. PCFe (PC fulfilment by experience) was strongly related to overall satisfaction and future behavioural intention, and was found to be a better predictor of volunteer satisfaction than PCFg (PC fulfilment by gap). This thesis contributed to the theoretical body of knowledge in volunteer management by strengthening understanding of issues relating to volunteer motivation and psychological contract as applied to sport event volunteerism. Also, practical implications were provided for the relevant organisations, volunteer coordinators, managers and staff in the sport event industry to develop more advanced volunteer management strategies. This thesis identified five research limitations (e.g. not being able to collect data from all volunteers included in the sampling frame of this thesis, consideration of other possible motivation items, little evidence of PC breach, issue of Common Method Variance and lack of qualitative research methods), and future research directions were suggested based on these research limitations. Taking this research into account, an understanding of volunteer motivations and PC types can improve the effective management of sport event volunteers and increase volunteer satisfaction and intention to continue volunteering. Ultimately, the efforts of sport event organisers and managers to develop advanced volunteer management strategies will contribute to the hosting of successful sport events.

Non-profit organizations come in many shapes and sizes and in some cases, encompass a significant portion of community organizations. Since these agencies are largely sustained by the work of volunteers, it is a worthy subject to examine. The diversity and complexity of non-profits available among communities presents a need for volunteers’ to be skilled, trained, and experienced in an array of arenas. Non-profit organizations depend on volunteers and allow these entities to reach a larger population than exclusively with the limited staff members available (Fisher & Cole, 1993). This notion suggested the topic of motivation and retention of volunteers among community non-profits for the focus of this study to help organizations effectively deliver their mission. More specifically, this investigation centered on people who are considered high-functioning by the administrators with whom they work through the process of interviews. Non-profit organizations located in Denver, Colorado were selected to participate. The administrators of the chosen agencies were contacted and asked to identify volunteers in their program they classify as high-functioning. Once this list was identified, these individuals were contacted and asked to participate in an interview. This study focused on high-functioning volunteers for data collection because it was anticipated their characteristics and viewpoints will aid in the understanding of motivation and retention factors for anyone working with and supervising volunteers in the 21st century. The findings from the study provide a diverse assessment of the topic of volunteer motivation and retention. The data collected suggests that adult volunteers have varying needs and the importance for volunteer administrators to take these differences into consideration in their management and programming efforts.

Streszczenie:
There has been little research conducted related to how school-based agricultural (SBAE) teachers perceive the utilization of volunteers in the classroom. The United States is facing a shortage of SBAE teachers, and with turnover rates that are not sustainable, solutions for support and reduction of the SBAE teachers’ workload must be sought with diligence. There is potential for volunteers to reduce some of the responsibilities that the SBAE teacher is faced with. The purposes of this study are to determine the demographic characteristics of the volunteers being utilized and of the SBAE teachers, determine the perceived benefits, barriers and beliefs SBAE teachers hold towards volunteer utilization, and determine if there is a relationship between these perceptions teachers hold and their choices in the utilization of volunteers. The research questions guiding this study were: 1. What are the demographic characteristics of SBAE teachers and programs in the United States? 2. What is the current utilization of volunteers in SBAE programs in the United States? 3. What are the perceptions and beliefs of SBAE teachers regarding volunteer utilization within SBAE programs in the United States? 4. What are the intentions of volunteer utilization among SBAE teachers in the United States? 5. What is the relationship between volunteer utilization and selected teacher/program characteristics and perceptions of SBAE teachers? The total population of this study was all of the SBAE teachers in the United States. A simple random sample of this population was be taken (n=500), provided by the National FFA Association based on the 2017-2018 membership (N = 11,000). This descriptive study utilized survey research to accomplish the purpose, assessing the current utilization of volunteers, and the perceptions that SBAE teacher hold. Study participants were identified as SBAE teachers who held a part or full-time assignment to teach agriculture. Descriptive statistics were utilized to determine the demographic information of the volunteers utilized, the SBAE teachers, and program characteristics. These statistics were reported with frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations. Regression analysis was conducted to determine if any relationships existed between the program and teacher characteristics, and between the program and volunteer utilization.

Streszczenie:
To effectively provide services to citizens, local governments have had to be creative. One approach has been the creation of volunteer programs to meet demands and expanding needs. Volunteer programs hold promise for creating meaningful engagement opportunities for citizens. However, limited organizational capacity, inadequate volunteer management practices, and difficulties in maintaining volunteer retention are concerns plaguing local government volunteer programs. Volunteer programs are often structured around a set of best practices thought to be necessary for ensuring the retention of volunteers. To apply best practices across the board would suggest that local government volunteer programs are similar in organizational structure, budget size, amount of citizen engagement, accountability concerns, and that they adopt similar bureaucratic procedures. Using human relations and bureaucratic theories as theoretical frameworks, four research questions are asked and answered: 1) What are the managerial and political challenges in volunteer management and retention for local government volunteer coordinators?, 2) What challenges are local governments' volunteer coordinators facing in using volunteer management practices?, 3) What strategies are helpful in retaining volunteers in local government volunteerism?, and 4) What challenges do local government volunteer coordinators face in engaging citizens? Data collection for this qualitative study was conducted using online surveys and telephone semi-structured interviews. The findings suggest that creating meaningful work for volunteers and coordinating this work with local government managers was an important "best practices" challenge. Although local government volunteer programs also have a mission of engaging citizens, the practices actually used may directly conflict with their mission. Many volunteer management practices are supporting organizational goals rather than supporting the needs of volunteers. The study findings suggest that the best practices used by local governments are not given equal weight and "one size does not fit all." Instead, local governments must prioritize their practices carefully.

This thesis aimed to develop an Experimental Medicine Model for the assessment of the potential efficacy and psychiatric safety of novel anti-obesity drugs. Chapter 1 provides a general introduction. In Chapter 2, a Universal Eating Monitor (UEM) detected the satiety enhancing effects of an appetite suppressant drug (meta-chlorophenylpiperazine – mCPP) and the P1vital® Oxford Emotional Test Battery (ETB) suggested an absence of psychiatric side-effects. In Chapter 3, UEM measures of eating behaviour were similar whether or not the participants were aware of the UEM. Chapter 4 presents two studies providing evidence that 1) repeated use of the ETB is feasible and 2) performance on the ETB is not affected by satiety. In Chapter 5, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was used to identify a profile of natural satiety. In Chapter 6, mCPP reduced brain activity to high calorie food images. It also reduced consumption of a palatable cookie snack but not a pasta meal. Analysis of individual differences to the drug showed that brain activity predicted anorectic response. Chapter 7 concludes that the Experimental Medicine Model may be valuable for the development of efficacious and safe appetite suppressant drugs, providing data to inform go/no go decisions in early phase clinical trials.

Experts believe that draft would require a larger number of accessions, since draftees and draft-motivated volunteers are more likely to leave military service than volunteers at their first opportunity. This thesis presents evidence on this issue. We are able to compare retention behaviour and service lengths of draftees and volunteers in the same cohort by using data files consisting of enlistees during lottery draft years.

Streszczenie:
The purpose of this research was to examine the dimensionality and targets of the commitment of volunteers (including committee members, coaches, officials, and volunteers in various other roles) in junior sport organisations, and the links between commitment and behavioural outcomes, specifically, intention to stand down from a volunteer role, intention to cease volunteering for the club or centre, and self-assessed performance. A sequential explanatory mixed methods design consisting of a quantitative (two studies) and a qualitative phase (one study) was employed. Drawing on Meyer and Herscovitch’s (2001) general commitment model, the quantitative studies assessed commitment to three organisational targets: the organisation (defined as the centre or the club), the team of volunteers, and the volunteer role. Participants were recruited from Little Athletics centres in New South Wales (Metropolitan Region) for the first study. Survey instruments were distributed to volunteers during a regional championship with 27 participating centres. One hundred and nine surveys were completed and returned. The data were subjected to reliability analyses and then analysed with techniques such as correlations, t-tests and ANOVAs. This study found that volunteers had distinctive affective commitments to the three targets assessed. The second study, building on the findings of the first one, refined the survey measures and also examined intention to stand down from the volunteer role, intention to cease volunteering for the club or centre, and self-assessed performance. Participants were recruited from Little Athletics centres in Queensland. Survey instruments were mailed to all 120 centres. Two hundred and four surveys from participants representing 52 centres were completed and returned. The data were analysed with Partial Least Squares modeling (PLS), stepwise regression, and logistic regression. This study found that volunteers held distinctive affective and normative commitments to the three targets, and that each target was related to a behavioural outcome. Specifically, organisational commitment and commitment to the role were related to self-assessed performance, commitment to the role was related to intention to stand down from the volunteer role, and commitment to the team of volunteers was related to intention to cease volunteering for the centre or club. The study also showed that committee members had a stronger commitment than volunteers in other roles, and that volunteers without children (or without children currently enrolled in the volunteers’ respective centres) had a stronger commitment than volunteers with children. Volunteers with more experience, particularly those with four or more seasons of experience, had significantly stronger commitment than volunteers with less experience...
