<p>Volunteering is popular with all generations, from youngto old. Many people try to find opportunities for being a volunteerand find the right match for their talents, interests and time. In literature volunteering is generally considered as an alturiscticactivity and is intended to promote goodness and to contribute to improving human quality of life. In return, this activity can produce a feeling of self-worth and respect. There is no financial gain involved for the individual. Volunteering is also renowned for skill development, socialization, and fun. Volunteering may have positive benefits for the volunteer as well as for the person or community served. United Nations Volunteers (UNV) describes volunteerism as a powerful means of engaging people in tackling development challenges and it can transform the pace and nature of development. Volunteerism benefits both society at large and the individual volunteer by strengthening trust, solidarity and reciprocity among citizens, and by purposefully creating opportunities for participation. UNV recognizes volunteerism in its diversity as well as the values that sustain it: free will, commitment, engagement and solidarity.</p>

The relationships among beliefs about volunteerism, volunteering intention, volunteering behavior, and purpose in life were examined in this study. A total of 5,946 participants completed a series of scales, including the Revised Personal Functions of Volunteerism Scale, Volunteering Intention Scale, and Purpose in Life Scale. The results showed that participants whose purpose in life had different levels also had varied prosocial beliefs about volunteerism, volunteering intention, and volunteering behavior. Purpose in life was associated more strongly with prosocial value function than with other types of beliefs (except understanding function). When different beliefs are grouped, the correlation between purpose in life and other-serving beliefs was higher than that between purpose in life and self-serving beliefs. Purpose in life was also associated with volunteering intention and behavior. Path analyses showed that purpose in life predicted volunteering behavior via beliefs and intention. While other-serving beliefs predicted volunteering behavior directly, self-serving beliefs did not have such direct effect.

Abstract There has been a lack of studies exploring volunteerism from the life span perspective. This study aims to examine the relationship between personality and volunteerism among the oldest old population, using three types of volunteerism: “ever volunteered,” “last volunteered,” and “currently volunteering.” “Ever volunteered” assesses whether individuals ever volunteered in their life. “Last volunteered” examines when an individual last volunteered. “Currently volunteering” explores whether an individual is currently volunteering. By comparing the three volunteerism measures, this study took a life span view of volunteerism. Data of 208 oldest old adults, octogenarians (34.1%) and centenarians (65.9%), from the Georgia Centenarian Study were included in this study. The majority of the sample had volunteered sometime during their lifetime (88.9%), many of them still volunteered when they were in their 80s and 90s (40.4%), and the majority of the sample indicated that they were not currently volunteering (78.8%). Multiple regression analyses indicated that competence (a facet of conscientiousness) significantly predicted “ever volunteered,” and extraversion significantly predicted “last volunteered.” In other words, oldest old adults with high competence levels were more likely to have volunteering experiences in their life. Also, those with high levels of extraversion were likely to have more recent volunteering experiences. None of five personality traits significantly predicted “currently volunteering.” This study sheds light on the importance of different types of volunteerism which enables us to better understand the relationship between volunteerism and personality. We recommend future research to test the link between different types of volunteerism and well-being outcomes.

Determining the factors influencing environmental volunteering provide valuable input on how to retain and sustain environmental volunteerism among students. Previous research shows that volunteerism is attributed to many factors, such as motivation for personal development, social norms, well-being, and the environment. However, there is a lack of research on the value orientation of environmental volunteering, specifically environmental values and intentions linked to environmental volunteering behaviour. Comparing values orientation in environmental volunteering between genders can provide comprehensive guidelines for the intervention strategy to foster environmental volunteering participation among students. Therefore, this study examined university students' values orientation and intention to sustain their participation in environmental volunteering. There are four (4) subconstructs for values orientation, i.e., egoistic, biospheric, altruistic, and religious values. Random sampling was used, and a survey was conducted among 356 university students with experience in environmental volunteering. Descriptive analysis was employed to analyse the level of values orientation and intention to sustain their involvement in environmental volunteering. The t-test was conducted to determine the differences in levels of values orientation and intention to sustain environmental volunteering based on gender. The results indicate that values orientation and intention among the respondents are high, and there is a significant difference in biospheric values orientation based on gender. Thus, this research makes a valuable contribution in understanding issues affecting University students’ participation in environmental volunteering. This study highlights the role of tertiary level environmental education in promoting environmental volunteering among students, as a part of the environmental conservation effort and to maximize students’ individual growth.

The large Former Soviet Union (FSU) immigration of the 1990s, accounting for approximately 15% of the Jewish population in Israel today, plays a significant role in shaping Israeli society. Volunteering, as part of social citizenship and normative culture, is an important element of acculturation among immigrants. The present study compares volunteering attitudes and motivations among Generation 1.5 FSU immigrants in their third decade in Israel to native-born Israelis (NBIs): 576 participants, 50.2% NBIs and 49.8% FSUs. Generation 1.5 FSU immigrants exhibited less favorable attitudes toward volunteerism than NBIs. FSUs also rated career motivations for volunteerism significantly higher than NBIs, and values significantly lower than NBIs. Significant differences were found between motivations for volunteering among each cohort, separately, as well. In the context of mass immigration, re-socialization regarding volunteering among Generation 1.5 FSU immigrants living 2–3 decades in Israel appears relatively weak, possibly attributable to FSU policy and culture in opposition to independent volunteerism.

Previous studies offer evidence that U.S. public and private high schools differentially influence volunteerism in adolescence. However, these studies are typically cross-sectional and only consider whether the individual volunteered or not. We address patterns of volunteering from adolescence into adulthood and the kind of volunteering activity in which individuals engage. We also theorize that distinctive civic values within public and private schools together with their respective organizational ties to other civic organizations channel students into particular volunteering activities. Relying on a longitudinal, nationally representative sample of U.S. adolescents, we track volunteering from adolescence into young adulthood and identify the types of volunteering activities in which respondents engage. Results demonstrate that the likelihood of volunteering changes through the life course, and students from different schooling backgrounds systematically sort into specific volunteering activities as our theories predict.

Given that volunteers perform a diverse range of behaviors aimed at helping distinct causes, a more nuanced understanding of how types of volunteer behaviors are similar and different would enrich both basic and applied perspectives on volunteerism. We created and validated an inventory of individuals’ interests in eight different types of volunteering: administrative volunteering, helping animals, interpersonal helping (autonomy or dependency), donating, physical volunteering (built or natural environments), and political volunteering. Grouping these eight types of positions into two general categories (interpersonal and skills-based volunteer positions), we also examined convergent and discriminant validity, linking interest in these positions to constructs from the volunteerism literature (i.e., prosocial personality, volunteer motivations, and volunteer satisfaction). This research demonstrates that volunteer behaviors can be classified into types, certain individuals are interested in different types of volunteer behaviors, and volunteers engaged in behaviors that match their interests express greater volunteer satisfaction.

Background: Participating in volunteering activities during students’ higher education experience is becoming more commonplace. Studies have noted that volunteering has a positive impact on the academic performance of undergraduate medical students. However, the majority of these studies rely on self-reported data like surveys, interviews, and journals. In this study, we leverage actual institutional data to examine the relationship between volunteering and academic performance among medical students in the pre-clinical phases of the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) program. The current study also explores the factors that might influence the studied relationship. Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted in the College of Medicine at the Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Three years of volunteering records for three cohorts of undergraduate medical students enrolled in the MBBS program between 2016 – 2018 were reviewed and analyzed to complete this study. In addition, the correlation between the Annual Grade Point Average (AGPA) and volunteering was studied, and the regression coefficients for the two variables were observed across the three cohorts in each study year. Results: Analysis of 153 undergraduate medical students' volunteering records revealed a significant positive relationship between the AGPA and the number of volunteering in year two. The correlation was insignificant in year one, year three, and across the three cohorts. Conclusions: The association between academic performance and volunteering among undergraduate medical students appeared to be positive. However, this relationship differs across the pre-clinical study years in medical school and is likely influenced by factors that impact students’ motivation towards volunteering. Therefore, having the volunteerism program embedded in curriculum planning is an aspect to be explored to enhance medical students’ learning and professional development through volunteerism.

Little research has investigated different religious dimensions, for example, public and private religiosity, in contribution to participation in different voluntary services and specific secular volunteering domains, and whether these dimensions have different effects on voluntary services and volunteering domains. Furthermore, this research has tested whether public religiosity is a mediator and/or a suppressor of the effects of private religiosity on volunteering. Of a representative sample of general adults, the current study found that public and private dimensions of religiosity significantly predicted more participation in different voluntary services and specific secular volunteering domains and public religiosity had stronger effects than did private religiosity. Irrespective of the dimension, religiosity was more strongly related to some voluntary services and volunteering domains than to others. Importantly, the effects of private religiosity on secular volunteering are significantly mediated and suppressed by public religiosity, but the reverse is not true. Implications for volunteerism for nonprofit organizations are briefly discussed.

AbstractVolunteering is perceived as important for creating social capital and civil society, and therefore has become a fundamental part of social policies across most Western countries. In this article, we examine the involvement of governments, corporations and educational institutes in encouraging volunteering, and pinpoint their role in developing volunteering circles. Based on essential concepts presented here (volunteerability and recruitability), we develop the third-party model, and show how third parties get involved. We identify new ways in which these parties can enhance volunteering, and discuss their impact on volunteerability and recruitability. The potential negative impacts of volunteerism and ways in which these can be ameliorated are also acknowledged. Finally, issues that arise due to such involvement are also discussed, thereby offering an important contribution to social policy research in the area of volunteerism.

Volunteering is commonly observed from the standpoint of the service recipient, and the effect it has on a volunteer’s growth and development is often overlooked. Though quantitative studies, mixed method research, and surveys have explored the impact of volunteerism, very few look into its connection with healthy youth development. Furthermore, it has not received the academic attention it deserves in Sri Lanka, given that the country is globally ranked 1st in volunteer engagement. This qualitative study sought a psychosocial approach to explore and gain insight into the effects of volunteerism on the personal and social development of volunteers. Data collection was done through semi-structured interviews conducted with 6 (young adult) participants (4 females, 2 males), with at least 2 years of experience volunteering at an educational or psychosocial setting. The data were analysed through interpretative phenomenological analysis, which took a hermeneutical stance to explore the lived experiences of volunteers. The analysis revealed 2 superordinate themes: The first, a “journey of growth,” emphasized the development through exposure to different realities and the discovering of career-related interests. The second, “acceptance, support, and validation,” illustrated the importance of sociocultural influences on volunteerism. The findings of the study provided insight into multiple implications including the role of supervisors and volunteer organizations in facilitating a healthy volunteering experience, the significance of sociocultural beliefs and philosophical drives in volunteerism, and the possibility of using volunteering as a standardized youth development program.

Researchers used articles published in 2010-2020 in ScienceDirect, PubMed, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. Articles were searched using OR and AND. The keywords and MeSH used were “Volunteering OR Volunteerism OR volunteers AND Health OR Care OR Nursing” in the title, abstract, and keyword articles. Inclusion criteria were full articles in English. Rodger’s evolutionary concept analysis was implemented in this study with six steps. Results: This study used 39 eligible articles analyzed by providing codes of each article and then classified them in attributes, antecedents, and consequences of concept. Five attributes of volunteering, namely, giving help freely, as long-term planned, as giving a benefit to another individual, group, or organization, as working at a formal organization, and as a long-life activity were found. Antecedents of volunteering include motivation, social demographic, and philanthropic behavior. The consequences of volunteering were consequences for volunteers, patients, and the health care system. Conclusion: Volunteering is a complex concept and many surrogate concepts have similar definitions. The attributes are still debatable and need to be explored. Also, the consequences of volunteering are still rarely discussed in a particular health care system context. Further studies need to analyze the measurement of volunteering development based on the nursing theory framework and explore the consequences of volunteering in the health care system related to the nursing care context.

Research demonstrates that volunteering provides many benefits for individuals and communities. However, research has not adequately addressed the potential significance of volunteering as a mechanism for low-income individuals to improve their own lives and support their communities. To account for the benefits volunteering could generate, research must shift from an emphasis on what low-income volunteers lack to an approach that uncovers the strengths and wealth present among low-income volunteers and their communities. The purpose of this article is to present a theoretically informed asset-based framework for analyzing volunteerism research. Through an examination of four nonfinancial assets—social capital, human capital, cultural capital, and political capital—we illustrate how an asset-based approach offers an opportunity to explore the ways low-income individuals could build and leverage assets through volunteering. Implications for future research that frames volunteering as an asset-building strategy are considered.

Findings – A majority of volunteering decisions are made without thoughtful reflection, based on convenience in an effort to reduce personal hardship, and influenced heavily by institutional and organizational structures. Originality/value – These results call into question the notion that volunteering-related choices are deeply personal, purposeful and/or reflective decisions. Moreover, the findings begin to explain why volunteerism continues to be dogged by labels such as “ineffective”, “inefficient” or “lacking in value” when benchmarked against expectations.

Volunteering can play an important role in active aging. The resource theory of volunteering posits that volunteerism depends on human, social, and cultural capital. Benefits of volunteering have been documented at the micro-, meso-, and macrolevels, positively affecting individual older people as well as their local communities and society at large. Taking a process-oriented theoretical approach, this study focused on the mesolevel factor of the environment with the purpose of determining the relationship between perceived neighborhood safety and volunteerism over the course of a decade and the extent to which this relationship differs by gender and race. Longitudinal data from the Health and Retirement Study in the United States of America between 2008 and 2018 were used ( N = 72,319 adults 60 years and older). Generalized estimating equations (GEE) with robust standard errors were employed while controlling for a number of covariates. A third of the sample volunteered in the past year (33%). The probability of volunteering among older adults who rated their perceived neighborhood safety as excellent was greater compared with those who rated their perceived neighborhood safety as fair/poor after controlling for all other model covariates (ME: 0.03, 95% CI: 0.02, 0.05). Among males rating their perceived neighborhood safety as excellent, the probability of volunteering was higher (ME: 0.04, 95% CI: 0.02, 0.07). Among females, the probability of volunteering was higher among those who perceived their neighborhood safety to be excellent (ME: 0.03, 95% CI: 0.01, 0.05) or very good (ME: 0.02, 95% CI: 0.00, 0.04). White respondents who rated their neighborhood safety as excellent (ME: 0.05, 95% CI: 0.03, 0.07) or very good (ME: 0.04, 95% CI: 0.02, 0.06) had a higher probability of volunteerism. Results were not significant among Black respondents and those who described their race as “other.” This study’s process-oriented theoretical approach indicates that initiatives aimed at improving neighborhood safety and older adults’ perceptions of neighborhood safety could increase social capital and lead older adults to engage in more volunteering, providing benefits at micro-, meso-, and macrolevels—to older individuals, their local communities, and society at large.

Initial motives for volunteering showed a weaker than expected relationship with volunteerism. Motives were, however, correlated with role identity and perceived expectations in an interpretable and theoretically coherent manner. The results provided preliminary support for a conceptual framework that integrates the functional and identity approaches to understanding long-term volunteers.

In this article, we analyze two predictions about baby boomers that have contributed to the current policy paradigm: that the boomers will reinvent retirement, and that they have the potential to engage in higher levels of formal volunteering than previous generations. Empirical evidence from various studies and surveys do not support this paradigm. In fact, the data lead to the conclusion that baby boomers are neither initiating the reinvention of retirement, nor are they the initiators of a surge in volunteerism. Instead, they are part of an ongoing evolution of retirement and volunteerism begun by their parents’ generation. We propose several assumptions to construct an alternative policy paradigm: Baby boomers need to be recognized as a diverse age cohort whose engagement is multi-faceted. Volunteer recruitment and oversight require creative approaches which focus on the communal and membership aspects of volunteering rather than focusing on volunteering as unpaid “work.”

The article is devoted to the description of opportunities for developing a foreign language communicative competence to establish international cooperation in the field of volunteering using the methods of teaching English for Specific Purposes (ESP). The relevance of the topic is determined by dissemination of ideas of volunteerism around the world. The programmes for the development of social policy in Russia state the need to establish international cooperation on volunteerism issues; there are plans for organizing some events with international participation. They require a high level of proficiency in English for communication in the field of volunteering. The purpose of the article is to substantiate the methodology of teaching English for establishing cooperation on volunteering from a theoretical point of view. The current policy of activating international volunteering is analysed, the possibilities of using the ESP concept as a method of short-term specialized teaching of English on a specific topic are discussed, and an approximate thematic planning of a language training course for participation in international volunteer projects is presented. The following methods are used to conduct the research: the analysis of Acts on volunteering at the international and Russian levels, an overview of the websites of Russian volunteer projects and foreign volunteer organizations, the analysis of scientific literature on the methods of teaching English, including ESP. The results of the study confirm the need to develop a foreign language communicative competence for establishing a professional and productive international cooperation on volunteering. An approximate thematic planning of English language classes within the framework of the ESP concept to establish such cooperation is proposed.

Abstract Family caregiving has been linked to an increased risk of poor mental health, poor physical health, and higher rates of perceived social isolation among caregivers. Despite the connection between caregiving and negative outcomes, or perhaps because of this connection, caregivers seek out and enjoy other life roles and activities including formal volunteerism. To explore the connection between informal caregiving and volunteering and establish the representative prevalence of formal volunteering among caregivers, descriptive and multivariate logistic regression analyses were carried out with data from 1,745 caregivers in the National Study of Caregiving (NSOC) (2017). Utilizing social capital theory four models were constructed with salient demographic characteristics associated with volunteering (model 1), caregiving context (model 2), caregiver physical and mental health (model 3), along with participation in informal and formal social networks (model 4). About a quarter of the sample participated in volunteering (26%). The average age was 60.5 years (SD = 14.3) and more than half consisted of female caregivers (67.11%). Non-Hispanic Whites (62.9%) were the majority of the sample, followed by non-Hispanic Blacks (28%), Hispanic (6.5%), and caregivers in other racial/ethic groups (2.6%). Gender, educational achievement, caregiving for a spouse, coresiding with care recipient, caregiving for multiple care recipients, quality of relationship with care recipient, caregiver psychological well-being, having emotional/physical support, attending religious services, and group activity participation were all significant indicators for caregiver volunteerism. Findings support the importance of both human and social capital in volunteering among caregivers.

Previous studies used chronological age to examine the relationship between aging and volunteerism. In the current study, we examined the influence of subjective life expectancy (SLE) on volunteering based on the socioemotional selectivity theory emphasizing that older adults focus on very close relationships. Data of 11,203 older adults, 55 to 74 years old ( M = 65.0, SD = 5.6), from five waves (2006–2014) of the Health and Retirement Study were included. Growth curve modeling results showed that older adults with higher SLE scores at baseline not only spent more time volunteering but also showed a slower decrease in volunteering over time. Furthermore, changes in older adults’ SLE were associated with a change in volunteering. The findings may show the relative importance of close relationships and social activities for older adults and contribute to demystifying the differences shown in the volunteer participation among older adults.

Studies indicate that the benefits of volunteering may extend to biological risk factors in disease development including chronic inflammation, though the pathway through which volunteer activity predicts chronic inflammation remains unclear. The current project focuses on the link between volunteering and C-reactive protein (CRP) as a measure of chronic inflammation, while paying a particular attention to sleep quality as a pathway. Using panel data from the National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project ( N = 1,124), the present study examined whether sleep quality operates indirectly linking volunteer activity and CRP (indirect pathway), compensates for the lack of volunteerism (moderation-compensation), or regulates the benefits of volunteering on CRP (moderation-regulation). The findings suggest sleep quality as a compensatory pathway, in that sufficient sleep buffers the inflammatory effect of lack of volunteerism. The findings show that helping others may be beneficial for the helpers in terms of chronic inflammation and sleep quality as interconnected health outcomes.

Volunteering activities are positive experiences that attract volunteers to spend their free time to benefit society while increasing the volunteers’ job satisfaction and self-esteem (Chang et al., 2012). However, research on the motives of sport volunteers and the impact of volunteerism on the self-esteem of sport volunteers in Malaysia is scarce, and the present study was aimed at contributing to the filling of this knowledge gap. The purpose of this study is to determine the motives Malaysian volunteers assign for serving as volunteering for SUKMA Games. A total of 376 Malaysian volunteers for the SUKMA Games in Perak in 2018 participated in the study. A Volunteer Functions Inventory (VFI) and Rosenberg’s Self-Esteem Scale (RSES) were administered to 376 Malaysian SUKMA Games volunteers. Data were collected, collated, analysed and interpreted to ascertain the main findings of the SUKMA Games volunteers’ motives and their influence on their self-esteem levels. This study showed that Malaysian volunteers had several motives for volunteering with the highest motive identified as understanding. There was also a significant positive relationship between motive for volunteering and self-esteem level among SUKMA Games volunteers. Overall, all Malaysians volunteered because they had a high motive for volunteering. Volunteering also improved the self-esteem levels of Malaysian sport volunteers.

Young people are an asset to Pakistan, and they can play a vital role in the country&#39;s social and economic development. Non-formal education to promote volunteering activity in Pakistan can endorse the professional and social integration of the young labor force by preparing them with the labor&#39;s contemporary skills. The current study is an attempt to explore the situation in Pakistan and identify: (a) if non-formal education plays a role in youth&#39;s engagement in volunteering activity; (b) why young people volunteer; (c) what they can learn through volunteering; (d) the significant barriers which can prevent them from volunteering even after getting the training and opportunities to volunteer. Data was collected using purposive sampling from 4 different nonprofit organizations (NPOs), with city offices in three major cities of Pakistan. NPOs, on their end, collected the data form the youth volunteers working with them randomly using an online survey. The research findings revealed that non-formal education plays a significant role in ensuring young people&#39;s engagement in volunteering activity. The findings and recommendations from the study can guide youth initiatives and policies in Pakistan to include systematic and consistent non-formal education programs to promote youth volunteerism in Pakistan.

The article raises the issues of the development of the volunteer movement. In the framework of the presented sociological study, conducted in march – october 2020 by a group of scientists of the Yaroslavl state pedagogical university named after K. D. Ushinsky, the attitude of the residents of Yaroslavl to volunteerism and their understanding of this activity is studied. The authors made an attempt to identify the motives that may encourage the population to participate in volunteerism, and the main reasons for the low level of volunteerism in the region. The authors found that a significant part of the city's residents have no experience of volunteering. There is such an experience mainly among schoolchildren, students and working youth. At the same time, the majority of respondents, regardless of age and gender characteristics, positively assesses volunteer activity and considers it extremely relevant at the present time. Minors, regardless of gender, are also convinced of the demand for volunteering, but do not know how to become a volunteer. The same trend with regard to volunteering is observed among working youth, employees and people over 50 years of age. At the same time, the survey showed the reluctance of the majority of residents, regardless of age and gender, to engage in volunteer activities. It was found that the main reason for refusing to participate in volunteering is the lack of interest in this type of activity, and the motivation for it, according to the majority of respondents, is the need to help people. According to the results of the study, it is obvious that this need is primarily possessed by women. Based on the results obtained, recommendations are made and measures are proposed to improve the effectiveness of state policy in the development of the volunteer movement.

The authors reveal a vision of the development of the Ukrainian volunteer movement under conditions of armed Russian aggression. The research focus is on identifying the main trends of institutionalization and the dynamics of the development of Ukrainian volunteerism based on the use of modern digital, network, information and communication technologies. Two «waves» of activation of the Ukrainian volunteer movement related to the active phase of the armed conflict in Donbas (2014-2016) and the full-scale invasion that began on February 24, 2022 are analyzed. Two areas for providing volunteer aid to key target groups have been identified and substantiated, namely the Ukrainian military and the Armed Forces of Ukraine strengthen the country’s defense capabilities, and citizens affected by the armed aggression. Such a structure is used as an end-to-end analytical scheme in the study of various aspects of Ukrainian volunteering under conditions of both surges in the armed conflict (2014-2016 and 2022). The authors determine the specifics of the processes of institutionalization and platformization of Ukrainian volunteering, as well as the main integrated digital platforms of international volunteering to help Ukraine. New global and local challenges, problems and opportunities for the development of the Ukrainian volunteer movement to preserve the country’s human potential and strengthen the national, economic, social, and food security of the state are also revealed. The role, significance, opportunities, main tools and functionality of using the potential of information, communication, digital, network technologies in volunteering are shown. It is substantiated that the powerful potential of Ukrainian volunteerism, together with international volunteerism and charity aimed at helping Ukraine, is the basis for the country’s post-war recovery. It also contributes to the formation and strengthening of the culture of peace and security at the interstate level, stimulates the formation of a renewed system of European collective security and international cooperation.

Introduction. Volunteering is an effective tool for the development of society and a powerful personal development resource. However, ignoring the value content of volunteering in the mass organisation of volunteer youth associations reduces its ability to achieve social, economic, cultural and other altruistic goals. The formal approach to volunteering fails to meet either the public interest or the needs and expectations of young people. Participation in volunteering under the influence of external factors in case of unformed or controversial intrinsic motivation for this activity causes dissatisfaction with the work and termination of activities.Aim. On the basis of the value of volunteerism, the aim of the present publication is to identify and analyse the motivation for student volunteering.Methodology and research methods. The leading method of empirical research was the questionnaire survey among the members of volunteer organisations: schoolchildren, students of secondary specialised educational institutions and university students. The questionnaire was based on the theory of the motives of volunteering and their classification. The sample (N = 207) was formed using stratified random sampling. The quantitative research strategy included such tools as drawing up a portrait of a volunteer based on projective questions, using the method of unfinished sentences, the method of direct ranking of motives. The materials were processed in the programme Vortex 10.Results and scientific novelty. The study of the activity of volunteer associations existing on the basis of educational institutions indicates that such activity has become a compulsory type of extra-school work of students, which is veiled under volunteerism. Such “volunteering” is managed mainly through administration and is complied with the tasks of the educational institution. A typology of volunteering motives was formed, reflecting the subjective perceptions of young people. Comparison of the typology obtained with the declared motivation showed their consistency. When analysing the individual structure of motives, a predominance of focus on one’s own requests, rather than on social problems, was recorded. According to respondents’ answers, an “ideal type” of a volunteer is focused exclusively on altruistic values. An “ideal” leader of a volunteer organisation is characterised only as a manager. The key contradiction of youth volunteering is formed between its value essence as a free voluntary activity for the benefit of society and the predominance of egoistic motives for participation in it. The shift of emphasis in the motivation of young students to attitudes towards volunteering as a resource for personal development contributes to the growth of contradictions in real practice. The result of formalism, regulation and distortions in the reasons for volunteering is a disappointment in it. More than a third of volunteers leave volunteer associations due to loss or initial lack of internal motivation.Practical significance consists in scientific justification for the need to rethink and change the methods of volunteer management, taking into account its value components. The existing contradictions in the motivation of volunteers initiate the search for new approaches to the organisation of their selfless, socially significant work.

"There are many theories that explain why humans display prosocial behaviors towards their fellows. Such prosocial behaviors manifest differently with respect to the culture where they occur. Over time, some prosocial behaviors have been formalized into volunteer work, which often happens in an association or a non-profit organization. In this qualitative research, we seek to grasp volunteering in its developmental phase, and present how volunteers, volunteers coordinators, and human resources experts conceptualize volunteering. We used a semi-structured interview guide to question 15 volunteers, 10 volunteers’ coordinators, and 10 human resources experts. Findings indicate that volunteering is a learning opportunity, where people can develop their skills while helping others. "

Streszczenie:
Purpose – The purpose of this study is to both understand the motives for volunteering in local government (a strong/structured context) and determine how such motivation and other demographics interact with organisational contexts to influence volunteering outcomes. Design/methodology/approach – The study adopts a functional approach to volunteerism. The Volunteer Functions Inventory is modified to better assess the motivations of elected local government volunteers. The responses of 152 Maltese local councillors were used to answer four research questions empirically. Findings – Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses supported the introduction of a seventh VFI dimension, namely the political function. The study provides evidence that local councillors who received greater amounts of functionally relevant benefits reported more satisfaction and a stronger intention to continue volunteering in local government. The aggregated effect of multiple motives as well as other person-based determinants (marital status and education) produced a significant impact on volunteering outcomes in this strong/structured situational context of this public sector environment. Originality/value – This study contributes to a better understanding and assessment of the motivations of elected local government volunteers. It addresses practical recommendations for sustaining civil society, while acknowledging the potential and contribution of volunteers with various demographic characteristics.
