Streszczenie:
Computer-assisted guidance and information systems have recently gained increased popularity among counselors and students. However, there has been little objective research performed on them. The result has been that counselors are often uncertain about the appropriate usage of these instruments. A popular computer-assisted information system which has received little study is the Virginia VIEW Career Search. The Career Search is an accessing strategy designed to lead the users to access occupational and/or educational information from the Virginia VIEW microfiche. The Career Search was adapted from the Michigan Structured Occupational Search, which was developed using the Department of Labor's (DOL) occupational classification system and the Ohio Vocational Interest Survey's weighting of the DOL's data-people-things classification. The purpose of this study was to clarify the appropriate usage of the Virginia VIEW Career Search. The study sought information concerning how the Career Search is being used in public schools in Virginia by assessing user satisfaction and determining whether the search does lead the users to access occupational and educational information. Finally, user satisfaction ratings and the results of the Career Search and the Ohio Vocational Interest Survey II (OVIS II) were compared. The sample consisted of 624 Virginia secondary school students whose school districts use both the Career Search and the OVIS II in their counseling programs. The students completed the Career Search, the OVIS II, and the Student Questionnaire. The Student Questionnaire includes a revision of Zener & Schnuelle's 1972 Feedback Sheet, which had been revised to include a questionnaire which assesses whether users seek occupational/educational information after taking the Career Search. A portion of the Feedback Sheet collected ratings so that satisfaction for the Career Search and OVIS II could be compared. Finally, the results of the Career Search and the OVIS II were compared. The results of the study indicated that users do access career information after taking the Career Search. One of the most utilized sources of career information is the Virginia VIEW microfiche occupational files. Users were generally satisfied with the Career Search, and felt that it helped them gain insight concerning appropriate careers for themselves, and was a good use of their time. Data was insufficient to make a comparison of the levels of user satisfaction for the Career Search and the OVIS II. The comparison of the results of the two instruments yielded limited data as well. However, approximately fifty percent of the subjects had matched results for the first OVIS II scale on their OVIS II Student Report and one or more occupational titles (viewscripts) generated from using the Career Search.

Streszczenie:
This case study aimed to gain a holistic understanding of career guidance as implemented in a university in Guangdong province. The purpose of the research was to investigate (a) the identifiable content and approaches used in career guidance, (b) contextual factors inside and outside the university that influence career guidance, (c) how the people involved perceive the effect of career guidance on enhancing students' career competencies, (d) problems in delivering and receiving career guidance, and (e) how career guidance can be strengthened and improved. Qualitative data were collected between 2010 and 2012, using multiple methods including individual interviews, focus groups, observations, and documentary study. A total of 13 individual interviews and 5 focus group sessions were completed. The researcher collected information related to perceptions of university students, graduates, administrators, career practitioners, student tutors and teachers involved in the career guidance service. Evidence was also obtained from curriculum designs, reports, surveys, web pages, and documents produced by the school, faculties and student association. The researcher also conducted 17 participant and non-participant observations during relevant career activities. The data analysis involved coding, categorization, concept mapping, and theme generation. The themes that emerged were triangulated using data from the various sources. The findings reveal that a system has been built to provide career guidance through three separate channels. The Career Center is formally in charge of all career affairs; but currently ‘employment management’ is its main duty. Various career activities (conducted by students) are provided by the Students' Career Development Association (SCDA), which is supported by the Career Center. Also, in each faculty, career guidance related to specific majors is implemented. Contextual factors that influence career guidance can be summarized under four aspects: national policies and university support; management systems; political tradition of a centralization system; and various resources. The findings suggest that career guidance does enhance students’ career competencies, particularly in areas of self-understanding, career-related knowledge and skills, and in career-relevant networking. A variety of problems have existed in the university in relation to career guidance, including the lack of a comprehensive service, insufficient resources, a lack of credibility, uneven quality of career guidance, and a lack of professional training for the personnel involved. Many suggestions have been put forward by students and teachers for strategies to improve career guidance. In particular, it is believed that the Career Center, the faculties, and SCDA have to increase their coordination and cooperation at all levels, by a better integration of resources. The data analyzed in this study provide a unique picture of the implementation and content of career guidance with Chinese characteristics. In addition, factors influencing career guidance and its service delivery are identified and discussed within a Chinese context, taking socio-political factors into account. While the results provide evidence for an operational model of career guidance in a university, they also expand current theories of career guidance in China as a whole. Implications for practical solution of problems and for improvement of existing services are discussed in detail.

Winn, Victor. "Career awareness for grade nine learners with regard to engineering trade career choices at previously disadvantaged academic schools". Thesis, Peninsula Technikon, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.11838/1909.

Streszczenie:
Thesis (MTech (Education))--Peninsula Technikon, Cape Town, 2003
Currently in South Africa most learners attend academic schools that offer general subjects such as History, Geography, Biology, Accountancy and so on. There are considerably fewer technical schools that can absorb those individuals who want to pursue an engineering trade career path. Academic schools are not equipped to provide for learners who want to pursue engineering trade careers. These learners either fall by the wayside by leaving school prematurely, or they continue at the school through to matric with subjects that are not linked to engineering careers. This study attempts to determine the knowledge, understanding, attitude and perception of the learners, parents, educators, principal, and the WCED with regard to this problem. It is intended through this study to make recommendations that will lead to meaningful interventions in an attempt to rectify the current situation. The findings indicate that learners do not have an understanding of engineering careers and are more inclined to choose the more traditional careers such as teacher, doctor, lawyer, nurse etc. Because their career options are limited, many learners are unsure of what careers to choose while others end up choosing careers that are not suited for them. The parents are not knowledgeable enough and do not possess the necessary skills to assist their children with their career choices. Teachers at academic schools themselves had an academic education. As a result they are not aware of engineering careers and are not empowered to advise the learners. The principal, who is also an academic, has to consider the implication of making learners aware of engineering careers, because this could lead to an exodus of students from the school. He is under pressure from the WCED to maintain the required teacher - student ratios. The findings indicate that the WCED has initiated various programs around careers, but nothing specific with regard to career awareness. It is evident that these programs have not filtered through to this school. The methodology for this research incorporated a multi-method approach with both quantitative and qualitative instruments used. Questionnaires were directed at learners, educators and the parents. Focus group sessions were conducted with the learners and educators and interviews were directed at the principal and the WCED official. The study concludes with recommendations drawn from international models.

Streszczenie:
This study documents and analyses Aboriginal post-secondary students' perceptions of selected influences on their career development and planning. Six areas are examined: 1) parental influence; 2) teacher influence; 3) peer influence; 4) ethnic and gender expectations; 5) academic self-efficacy; and 6) the role of negative social events. A questionnaire based on the Career Interest Inventory (Fisher & Stafford, 1999) was administered to 150 undergraduate students. Three factors were significant for this population: 1) positive influence in the form of support from parents, teachers, peers, and students' academic experiences and self-efficacy; 2) negative social events in the context of having friends in trouble with the law, addictions, teen pregnancy, indifference to schooling, dropping out of high school, and deaths of friends; and 3) ethnic and gender expectations emanating from parents and teachers. Based on these findings, directions for further research, and implications for counselors and educators, are outlined.

Streszczenie:
The human resource is constantly cited as an organisation's greatest asset. In a rapidly changing technological environment this is most applicable to the Information Technology (IT) function. Organisations are experiencing IT human resource problems such as low satisfaction, early plateauing, high turnover, burnout, limited advancement potential, nominal corporate commitment, supervisory aversion, poor organisational culture, and exceptional compensation. These problems are directly related to the IT professional's career. There is a lack of information and awareness surrounding IT careers to deal effectively with these problems. The research aims to create increased awareness of IT careers and the inherent problems through the development of a career management model. The research aims to identify the factors that influence IT careers, provide career management with a means to measure compatibility of the factors, and suggest solutions to incompatibility. The solving of this problem will be of mutual benefit to both organisations and individuals as they seek to better manage IT careers. After reviewing research literature relating to career anchors, IT job types, IT skills portfolios, and career dynamics a model for Effective IT Career Management (EITCM) has been constructed. The model represents the dynamic interactions between individual, organisational, and dependent factors. The model examines the compatibility of these interacting factors by measuring the levels of relevant career variables. The model suggests appropriate career management techniques to increase the compatibility of the interacting factors. An empirical study was designed and launched online to provide data that would confirm the seven Critical Success Factors (CSF) relating to the proposed model. The responses from the members of the Computer Society of South Africa (CSSA) allowed the seven hypotheses derived from the CSFs to be tested. The results of the empirical study were positive but required modification to five of the CSFs before they could be confirmed. The EITCM model was modified to reflect the improved CSFs. An awareness of career influencing factors combined with active career management is advantageous to both IT professionals and their organisations.

Subjects in this study were 5,523 respondents from a survey which was sent to households throughout the United States. The purpose of this study was to examine two basic components of career orientation: career indecision and career insight. Correlational analyses found relationships between career indecision and average job tenure, industry leaving intentions, industry staying intentions, and job satisfaction. Correlational analyses found relationships between career insight, industry staying intentions and job satisfaction. Multiple regression analyses were run using both career indecision and career insight as independent variables found that they had useful levels of incremental validity in predicting industry leaving intentions and job satisfaction. Potential uses of the two-dimensional career indecision - career insight model are discussed.

Lev, Julian. "Self-monitoring processes and Holland's theory of vocational choice". Virtual Press, 1989. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/720300.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between self-monitoring and the constructs of the Holland vocational theory. Two hundred thirty nine subjects from two schools in the Pacific Northwest, a small university and a vocational school, completed the Vocational Preference Inventory (VPI; Holland, 1985a), My Vocational Situation (Holland, Daiger, Power, 1980a), the revised Self-Monitoring Scale (SMS; Snyder & Gangestad, 1986) and a demographic questionnaire that included the Occupational Alternatives Question.A regression analysis tested hypotheses about the relationship between the Enterprising and Social subscales of the VPI and self-monitoring for both sexes. A 2x2 MANOVA investigated sex by self-monitoring differences on three measures of congruent vocational decision-making. Three 2x2 ANOVAs on sex by self-monitoring investigated differences on measures of consistency and definition of vocational personality and stability of choice. Factor analyses were performed for two self-monitoring groups to test the extent to which the groups' responses to the VPI conform to Holland's theory. Results for men indicated that high self-monitors tended to prefer Enterprising occupations and low self-monitors preferred Realistic occupations. No significant relationships were found for women between the VPI and SMS. Low self-monitors scored significantly higher on one measure of congruence, between college major and first vocational choice. High self-monitors scored significantly higher on consistency and their responses to the VPI conformed more with the Holland theory. There were no other significant differences found between groups. No sex differences were found in these analyses. These results suggest that high self-monitors have more information about vocational roles and that they use this information to make vocational decisions. A further suggestion is that low self-monitors make decisions on the basis of their attitudes and tend to act more consistently on those decisions. It is argued that the two groups have different decision-making processes with highs seeking information about a job's task demands and lows considering internal responses in order to make vocational decisions.

Streszczenie:
Thesis (MA)--University of Stellenbosch, 2001.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In the light of the political dispensation and the subsequent changes in Education, it has become imperative to offer every learner the best possible opportunities with regard to the curriculum. This would imply that every learner has to be equipped with skills and values which would enable him / her to enter the Labour market with confidence in order to realise his / her potential and to become a useful member of society. It should also be kept in mind that learners would be able to exit from the schooling system at an earlier stage, as education is compulsory only to the level of grade nine. This presupposes that learners will have to receive information on different types of school, subject choices and further training as early as grade seven. Research also proves that interest is the most important factor in the choice of a career. Previously, the Kodus was the only standardised measuring instrument used to determine fields of interest of learners in grade seven, and it was only standardised in relation to white learners. The need for a measuring instrument, which will include all race groups (white, black and coloured) seems to be a pressing one at the moment. The purpose of the investigation was to standardise the MB-IOon learners in grade seven. In the process, special attention had to be devoted to cross-cultural factors, gender, interest in different occupations as well as the permanence and stability of this interest. The investigation was conducted in two phases. Firstly, 710 learners from 10 different schools (urban / rural) were tested. Afterward, English and Afrikaans glossary were compiled to accommodate black learners whose mother tongue was not English, and to make provision for regional variants of Afrikaans. Secondly, an experimental group, consisting of 1923 learners from 26 schools (urban / rural), was tested; during this process the new glossary were used. The results of the experimental group were then processed statistically. From the investigation the following become evident: • an analysis of the fields and items indicates that there are 14 items in four fields with an unacceptably low reliability - an inspection of content indicated that this could be attributed mainly to a lack of knowledge of the meanings of words, poor word comprehension, a lack of exposure and the general unfamiliarity of the activity. • that there are no significant differences in the ten fields of interest between white, coloured and black learners; such differences do, however, exist between the sexes. • That an investigation of validity confirmed that the MB-lO indeed measures levels of interest. On the basis of the result of the investigation and statistical analysis, the compilation of separate norms for boys and girls in grade seven went ahead. According to Meyer (1998) it is not desirable to change a questionnaire which is generally reliable, as it will not necessarily lead to an improvement. In the light of this we recommend that the MB-lO be used unmodified for grade sevens, as well as the glossary. In the case of the 14 "problem items", learners must be referred back to the glossary specifically in order to check the meanings of words.
Hierdie eksperimentele groep se resultate is toe statisties verwerk.

Dissertation submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree Master of Technology: Business Administration in the Faculty of Business at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology 2013
The shift in the employability skills required by employers has meant that, over and above their qualifications, graduates now need to have a set of specific skills that will enable them to be productive in the workplace. The basis for this study stems from the hypothesis that the intense competition for employment among graduates has meant that prospective employers now have a say in the attributes that are needed for potential employment. It is now no longer adequate for graduates to have a qualification, but to have, over and above the degree, specific employability skills that will enable them to be productive in the workplace. This study investigates the employability skills of analytical chemistry graduates at a university of technology for potential employers in the Western Cape. This was determined through a mixed-method approach, using both qualitative and quantitative research, and conducted amongst employers of analytical chemistry graduates in the chemical, cosmetic, petrochemical and pharmaceutical industries. In order to investigate the relevance of the employability skills, the following questions were asked: a. What skills are employers of new analytical chemistry graduates looking for in potential employees? b. What are the skills that past and current employers of analytical chemistry students, and graduates from the university of technology under investigation, have identified as important in these students and graduates? c. Is there congruence between the skills required by potential employers and those demonstrated by analytical chemistry graduates from the university of technology under investigation? This study was the basis for a potential further investigation into the development of a curriculum that will enable students to acquire the skills required by industry.

Thesis (DTech (Tourism and Hospitality Management))--Cape Technikon, 2003.
Many scholars in the social sciences, especially in the Hospitality industry have seen many changes over the years, based on research conducted in the workplace. Skills seem to be a popular research agenda. The literature is rich on how changes have occurred overtime in the hospitality industry workplace. With such a competitive environment this industry is functioning, it is important that entry level employees or current employees in the workplace possess a variety of non-technical skills. Once attained, these employees, will benefit the Hospitality industry, as happy clients / guests, will return, which will create a profitable workplace. It is vitally important that tertiary institutions pay specific attention to students and graduates, that they obtain non-technical skills, via co-operative education programmes, with a focus on the real employment world outside of education. This will equip them to find a job that could be satisfying and rewarding. Industry on the other hand should identify important non-technical skills and conduct on the job training, inducing such skills. The researcher found that the need for willingness to adapt and eagerness to learn was a consistent theme. The non-technical skills of communication, teamwork, initiative, problem solving and decision making were also highly valued. Respondents were dissatisfied with the quality of entry-level employees beginning their careers, especially graduates who lack non-technical skills. A need was seen for a long-term view of preparation of young people for work, beginning with parents and guardians, who should lay the foundations. Alongside them, educators should be fostering good attitudes and a love for learning, as well as lecturing verbal, numerical and other specific skills. Successful co-operative education programmes often could involve three key role-players, that of employers (managers / supervisors), students / graduates in this context and the tertiary institution they are studying at Technikon’s providing vocationally orientated co-operative education programmes, therefore need to continually examine what skills employers (managers / supervisors) consider to be important with regard to the skills required by students, entering the workplace. This research study revealed that there is a gap between the skills that students acquire in their formal studies and what employers (managers / supervisors) require. If this need is not recognised, the programmes, institution and students will suffer. The study is aimed at making a contribution towards co-operative education programmes in Hospitality and Tourism at technikons by identifying what non-technical skills the Border Technikon is not addressing. It was found that the skills not being adequately addressed fall in the non-technical skills category. The study identifies the non-technical skills required by employers (managers / supervisors) of Border Technikon Hospitality and Tourism students undertaking experiential learning.

Streszczenie:
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of program type and selected predictor variables on the vocational placement and feelings of self-esteem of disabled male workers. It was predicted that: (1) a physical capacity assessment program (PCA), designed by the investigator, would result in a higher rate of successful vocational placement than conventional placement techniques, in a shorter period of time and with a better vocational match; (2) increased measures of self-esteem would be experienced by the PCA group and at a more significant level than conventional vocational programs; (3) there would not be a significant interaction between the vocational placement variables and the independent variables of age, degree of disability and injury type; and (4) there would not be a significant effect of selected moderator variables between groups on the vocational placement variables. Fifty disabled workers were randomly selected from the active caseloads of the Vocational Rehabilitation Department of the Workers' Compensation Board of British Columbia for participation in the study. Their average age was 33.32 years, and their average length of time on wage loss was 245 days. All subjects were injured as the result of an industrial accident, were no longer undergoing medical treatment, had been cleared for a return to work but were suffering from a residual disability that prevented them from returning to the work force. Subjects were randomly assigned to one of two treatment conditions involving vocational counselling with job search training (JS) and vocational counselling with physical capacity assessment (PCA). Following completion of the program, subjects began job search activities and were monitored for a period of 6 months or until successful vocational placement was achieved. Data analyses showed that: there was a significant main effect between groups for success in vocational placement with PCA placing more subjects than job search; there were no significant differences between groups on measures of self-esteem following completion of the programs; there was a significant interaction effect of age, degree of disability and type of injury with success in vocational placement and; there was a significant interaction effect of several moderator variables including marital status and length of time on wage loss with success in vocational placement and time to vocational placement. The results tend to support the use of physical capacity assessment for the guantification of individual capacity to perform work. Further, the results suggest that the use of PCA information in the identification and selection of appropriate vocational alternatives can significantly enhance the success of vocational placement disabled workers. Recommendations were made for future research.

Streszczenie:
This study had a dual objective. The first was to determine which factors influenced the career choice of girls and the second whether• their• actual choices coincided with their aptitudes. Socialization has a direct influence on the identification of girls with their careers. From an early age their behaviour is in line with the traditional roles (femininity, attractiveness, etc.) which society holds up to them. This is also true about occupations regarded as being suitable for girls. Girls therefore tend to choose their careers from a limited sphere. The style of parents' upbringing of their children also has an influence on the development of a girl's sex role identity, and therefore her career orientation. The peer group, especially male friends, has a tremendous influence during adolescence on the formation of a girl's sex role identity and career orientation. Pressure from the peer group tends to make girls feel that popularity and attractiveness are more important than academic achievement and high professional aspirations. It also appears that teachers do not play a significant role in the career orientation of girls. The influence of television on the career orientation of girls can be traced back to the influence on the patterns of interest of television viewers. It emerges that television programmes represent sex roles in a stereotyped manner. Through that, patterns of interest in the fields of "Social work" and "Practical-female" (19-Field Interest Questionnaire) are reinforced. School counsellors do not have a big influence on the career choices of girls. Boys and girls both regard the aspects of interest highly in making a choice of career. Girls tend, however, to give high credence to the rendering of service and to welfare. Boys tend to look more strongly at good income and good opportunities for promotion. The training of girls is directed more at the development of aptitudes in a field in the Humanities, in secretarial and clerking positions. The result of this is that girls mostly follow a domestic, caring and administrative course of study. The career values of girls and their self-image have a negative influence on their career orientation. This leads to the situation that fear of success inhibits them from developing their full professional potential. Other factors, such as manpower shortages, economic and political conditions, the improvement of the level of education and professional knowledge separately or in conjunction, have an influence on girls' career preferences and expectations. For the purposes of this study the Senior Aptitude Test, professional profiles identified with the aid of the Senior Aptitude Test and a questionnaire were used. Three aspects are covered by the questionnaire: * Field of study * Career expectations * Choice of career All the Afrikaans-speaking matriculants of four Afrikaans-medium high schools in a particular metropolitan area participated in the project. The data were statistically processed with an SAS computer programme. Fields of study and aptitudes of the study group do not correlate. Most respondents' strongest aptitudes are in the Humanities, while they are in fact following courses in the field of Economics. Most respondents are of the opinion that there are adequate work opportunities for white girls in the RSA, but feel that career counselling did not make adequate provision for girls. The study group are of the opinion that girls can do traditionally male jobs. There is a fair amount of uncertainty, however, about the professional future of white girls in a changing RSA. Professional training is thus regarded as being very important. More than half of the group (67,2%) expert to marry and still to have a career. Most of the respondents (176 out of 277) have made a fin3l career choice. The reason why the rest have not made career choices could largely be attributed to too little knowledge about careers. Five careers, viz. secretarial, teaching, nursing, social work and clerking, represent the largest percentage (35,4%) of the study group's career choices. The study group mainly made their choices on their own volition, and most parents are satisfied with their daughters' choices of career. Training is essential for most careers, mainly at universities and technikons. Too little knowledge of careers and financial considerations gave rise to the fact that some respondents (71 out of 277) planned to study later. In the consideration of the results of the investigation, the following conclusions could be reached: The process of socialization still holds up the caring role, service and femininity to girls as the ideal. In that way girls' aptitudes in the fields of the Humanities and in medicine are reinforced. In spite of that, the greatest percentage of girls followed a commercial course. The conclusion that is reached is that they feel "safe" in this field of study, because the traditional expectation is that they will go and work as a typist or a secretary. Girls therefore choose a field of study in Standard seven which is not in line with their aptitudes. It emerges that girls do not receive adequate counselling in Standard seven, and that being a secretary or a teacher is still held up to them by die Guidance teacher. The career choices of the study group therefore correlate with their fields of study, but not with their aptitudes. The conclusion that can be reached is that a large percentage of the study group would seem to have made an unrealistic choice of career, probably because they did this from a limited professional awareness. This can probably be ascribed to the traditional values and roles held for girls. Other conclusions which emerge from this study: * The respondents are not properly informed about the changes occurring in the RSA. * The study group dispose of too little information about professional training, although they seem to be aware of its importance. * Girls want to move away from the traditional sex role of wife and mother, and want to reconcile career and marriage. * Most respondents do not dispose of adequate self- knowledge to come to a realistic choice of career without some supportive action. * The female work force in South Africa is very valuable and an important source of executive and highly qualified manpower which should not be neglected. The place which women fill in the career world and its implications should enjoy special attention in school guidance. It is especially necessary that girls be made aware of their career potential but also of career options and problems. A school guidance teacher should take note of the fact that girls' career orientation is different from that of boys, and should adjust the counselling programme accordingly. One cannot, therefore, have the same programme for boys and girls. If it should be accepted that the role of woman in the business world is important, it is essential that career and course guidance in school be improved on an ongoing basis. Such improvement can only take place if the process of career counselling makes provision for the dynamic as well as the scientific dimensions of career choice and career development of girls in particular. The career orientation of girls is a lifelong process. It goes much further than mere career counselling. It is comprehensive, encompassing the girl in her totality. It also points to co-ordinated planning by all persons and institutions involved. It is only in this way that the optimal utilization of available manpower in its full implications can be attained.
