Pełny tekst źródłaIn this thesis, we explore the static and dynamical properties of equilibrium polymers, polymers systems being able to cut and recombine themselves, in three and two dimensions. We confirmed recents results about Flory's ideality hypothesis in dense regime in three dimensions and mesured the effects of of this correction on equilibirum polymers. We also studied the dynamic of scission et recombination et showed the existence of the predicted regime of controled diffusion. In the two dimensional systems, we show measure ment of critical exponents predicted in recent theories

Pełny tekst źródłaThis thesis is part of the CPER BRAMSS project, one of its objectives was to develop an surface's retrieval method applied to the female bust. Therefore the work has aimed at the design, development and implementation of a three-dimensional measuring machine adapted to living objects.Among the large number of existing methods of three-dimensional measurements, attention was paid to the stereo matching as well as the use of structured light. Matching in stereovision is to find homologous pixels in two images of the same scene, taken from two different points of view. One way to achieve the mapping is to use correlation measurements. The algorithms used come up against certain difficulties: the changing light, noises, distortions, occlusions, low textured areas and large homogeneous areas. The use of structured light allow essentially the adding of information in homogeneous areas in this work. Developing this approach, an original method of reconstruction based on the exploitation of a particular pattern projected on the surface has been designed. A matching based on a comparison of the signatures of specific points in the pattern was implemented. This method allows a single sparse reconstruction acquisition step and simplifies the handling of the point cloud when transforming it in a surface mesh

Pełny tekst źródłaIn the beginning, we find Death walking around the world, completing her unappreciated task by herself. By the end, she has the help of her servant on Earth, the one the Bretons call l’Ankou. Between these two stories, there is a whole world – trivial, beautiful or ugly, but real – inhabited by people whose main similarity is that they can, and one day will, die. I have tried to write short stories that explore the lives of these people who Death observes, touches or even, sometimes, forgets. The essay that accompanies my creation attempts to address the challenges awaiting someone who wants to write about death, which we always look at with living eyes. Along with discussing my own stories, I also study death’s subtle presence in the work of Jules Supervielle and Roch Carrier. It is their way of writing that I seek to examine in the reflective portion of my project.

Pełny tekst źródłaAutomating the detection and identification of animals is a task that has an interest in many biological research fields and in the development of electronic security systems. The author present a detection and identification system based on computer stereo vision to achieve this task. A number of criteria are being used to identify the animals, but the emphasis is on the harmonic analysis of the animal real time reconstructed 3D shape. The result of the analysis is compared with others stored in an evolutive knowledge base.

Pełny tekst źródłaWithin the animal kingdom social insects fascinate humans. Especially ants, which are capable of adapting to various environments and taking advantage of their biotopes. Observing practices that we would have thought to be exclusive to humans – such as farming (of mushrooms) or breeding (of aphids) – spurs the will to understand by which mean ants operate. It turns out that ants achieve certain tasks in different ways than humans. For instance, to find the shortest path to a food source, or the best nest to migrate to; the colony can make a collective decision, decentralized and without the need of direct comparisons by individuals. My work has consisted of the elaboration and use of new methods to study ants. Two complementary objectives have been chosen to drive the work: implementation of a biohybrid system and assessing the means of and limits to controlling the behaviour of ants. The first objective consists of asking ourselves what will happen if we connected an ant colony with a computer For this I have designed apparatus that permit interaction between those two entities. It involved giving sight to the computer into what the colony was doing, then providing ways for the computer to act on the colony. To do so, I designed and tried out tools to monitor the activity of colonies as well as modular environments which ants can inhabit. I designed an embedded system that records and analyses activity of ant colonies on a micro-computer. I designed and 3D printed modules of various sizes that can be assembled together to form a structurally varied environment. For the computer to be able to act upon ant behaviour, I chose to endow it with the capability of modifying environmental conditions, at particular temperatures. Once the system was built, I conducted experiments to assess how local changes of temperature affect ant behaviour. This characterisation of behaviour under temperature changes sheds light on the relation of ants with their environment. This permitted the exploration of questions of control of behaviour of ants by a machine. The use of temperature having proved its capacity to modulate the local occupancy density, I then have been able to show that it was possible to confine an ant in a set location. Finally, I implemented a closed feedback loop system, in which the temperature used to confine the ant is dependent on the ant activity in real time. This last experiment shed light on the complexity of the dynamic relation between ants and their environments and opened new perspectives for future investigations. During this research, many tools were developed. Functional prototypes of moduary environments have demonstrated the relevance of using 3D printers for the study of ants. The various tools for monitoring, recording and processing video data provide new and innovative experimental possibilities and can be used for other studies, especially over long periods of time. Temperature control devices have as well been designed using rapid prototyping tools, making them accessible, scalable and reproducible in an open source approach

Pełny tekst źródłaAll life on earth has adapted to an environment where there is a small, persistent, radiation background interacting with cells. Unlike evaluating the clearly harmful effects of high radiation doses, understanding the effects of this low persistent radiation dose on living systems is incredibly difficult. We have attempted to study whether background radiation is an important factor in evolution by conducting identical evolution experiments with Escherichia coli in the Clermont-Ferrand Particle Physics Laboratory and the Modane Underground Laboratory. Despite a 7.3 fold difference in the rate of interactions between the radiation background and cells between the two environments, no significant difference was found in the competitive fitness of the cell populations grown at each location. Using simulations, we showed that the rate at which ionising radiation interacts with cells is one hundred times less frequent than E. coli’s mutation rate in our experimental conditions, supporting the contention that natural radiation has no strong evolutionary effect. To further support this conclusion, we developed a mechanistic simulation for DNA damage as part of the Geant4-DNA project. Using this application, we irradiated a model of an E. coli genome, showing that for electron irradiation > 10 keV, the double strand break yield can be reasonably estimated to be between 0.006 – 0.010 DSB Gy-1 Mbp-1, depending upon the modelling of radical scavenging. This is in agreement with experimental data, further highlighting the small role natural ionising radation plays as a cause of mutations

Pełny tekst źródłaThe present research follows George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead’s reception in the American press between 1967 and 1971. The analysis of the film’s media career shows how it progressively becomes consolidated as a public phenomenon, cult film and a work of art. The aim of the investigation is to understand by what means a film qualified by its first national review in Variety as an “orgy of sadism” becomes worthy of projection at New York’s Museum of Modern Art and the object of numerous interpretations, initiated by European critics in 1970. Night will be interpreted as a barely disguised metaphor of interior and exterior conflicts that shook the United States in the late Sixties (racial tensions, weakening of the traditional patriarchy, Vietnam War). Beyond the immediacy of its violent imagery of cannibalism, its content will be seen as socially and politically subversive. In the end, this little horror film made by some Pittsburgh-based amateurs will be integrated into United States’ cultural heritage, i.e. the national memory. This indicates that (film) critics do more than just inform their readership about new cultural releases. A journalist’s job consisting of spreading information to anonymous audiences is also an operation of mediation. By presenting Night of the Living Dead as a mirror of the American society, the critics take up the imaginary as a source for reflection on the commonly shared world. By doing so, they enable a national collectivity of a democratic society characterized by mass communication to see itself and to have control on its own history and actions

Pełny tekst źródłaThe three volumes of this work, including eleven chapters bibliography, tables, graphs and maps, analyze the impact of the slave trade on the Portuguese colonial system in the south Atlantic and the influence of this kind of trade on the Brazilian state after the independence of the country in nineteenth twenty-two. The first volume, including four chapters, studies the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. One after another, are noted the political and economic motives of the Portuguese slave trade, the rising of the slaves markets in Africa, the social and political obstacles limiting the constitution of Indian slave markets in Brazil. Also are examined the dutch-portuguese wars in view of the control of the slaves markets in Africa. In the second volume, three chapters investigate the basis of the "pax lusitana" in the south Atlantic, the problems created by the gold rush in Brazil and the reforms made by the administration of the marquis of Pombal, mainly on the employment of the Indian coerced labor after the expulsion of the Jesuits. The third volume contains four chapters, centered on the consequences of the Brazilian independence in the Portuguese possessions in Africa and the organization of the labor market in Brazil itself. In short, the importance of the slave trade shows that this trade is much more that a part of the exchanges built between the north and the south. It obliges to distinguish the Brazilian slave system in the new world and compel a non-territorial interpretation of the Brazilian nation born in the nineteenth century

Pełny tekst źródłaThis doctoral thesis aims to study the issue of the people who went missing at the end of the Algerian War, namely from the cease-fire of 19 march until the end of 1962. As we were not able to restrict our investigation to this period alone, we expanded our study to the consequences of the disappearances. This approach, which follows the tragic event from its outset to its recognition by the authorities and society, including its impact to date, is in three parts. The first part, « searching for the disappeared » (chapters 1-3), revisits the search by the relevant authorities for the missing individual or their remains, and the relegation of the « search for the disappeared » to an object of scientific research. The misuse of language linked to the multiple meanings of the word « disappeared », statistical escalation and the political and memorial uses of the issue are also highlighted in order to understand the reasons behind this agonizing mystery. The second part presents the procedures used, such as abductions and arbitrary arrests, to « make people disappear » (chapters 4-6). The different perpetrators, targets and motives of these abuses are also examined. Finally, the third part « living with disappearance » (chapters 7-9) focuses largely on the economical and psychological repercussions for families and loved ones, which includes financial problems, rumors and the impossibility of mourning due to the uncertainty of the fate of « those who are neither dead nor alive »

Pełny tekst źródłaFluorescent imaging allows one to monitor spatio-temporal fluorescent events occurring in cells, tissue or living animals and defined in time and space. The development of its use for detecting cancerous cells lies in part in the advancement of probes designed to target and detect. The first axis of my thesis work therefore concerns the evolution of fluorescent probes for the diagnosis of cancer cells in vivo. The second axis will evolve around the study of the transfer of therapeutic molecules in vitro and in vivo to tumoral cells via electropermeabilization. Firstly, the main objective is to develop a "smart molecule" for detecting cancer cells in living organisms by non-invasive fluorescent imaging. Our strategy is based on the use of branched organic molecules called dendrimers, which among their multiple functions allow targeting and detection. In collaboration with Dr. Majoral's team, we attempted to bind several tumour markers to various fluorescent dyes, in order to increase their specificity for B16F10 cancer cells and their signal to noise ratio for detection in vivo. Unfortunately, the chemical nature of dendrimers did not allow us to obtain a functional molecule. Indeed, as they are only soluble in the presence of a high quantity of organic solvent, we encountered a number of problems, due to the denaturing of the biological probes (antibodies) during the binding reaction. In parallel, a variety of non functional dendrimers (cationic, anionic, neutral and fluorescent) were tested on cells in order to determine the most viable candidate for use in vivo. However, we identified problems with the stability of the fluorescence and the toxicity. To solve these issues, with the assistance of a team of chemists, we developed dendrimers bearing polyethylene glycol to enable their dissolution in aqueous environments and make them biocompatible. As these are not cytotoxic, this approach will allow us to elaborate a dendrimer that is functional in an aqueous environment. .

To spare hypothetical category-specific naming cortical areas for living/ non-living objects and famous faces 50 and 51 brain mappings studies were respectively performed with direct electrocortical stimulation during awake surgery for tumors removal. I. No single region showed a statistical significant difference of selective interference sites between the two categories. In the whole left hemisphere a statistical significant antero-posterior gradient for non-living objects was observed. II. A statistical significant representation in the three left frontal areas and in the left temporal pole for famous faces was demonstrated. A certain segregation of different semantic naming categories at the cortical level is verifiable and can be explained by evolutionary pressures like for non-living objects in the left parietal gyri near the somato-sensory cortex

Pełny tekst źródłaThis study of the mono-alu society (solomon islands) is based on data from the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries, especially on an ethnographic manuscript by the british anthropologist g. C. Wheeler. The analysis of the social structure, myths, rituals, exchanges and mono-alu language reveals a fundamental structure based on the hierarchical opposition between two distinct forms of the notion of nitu (which can be glossed as "ancestor"). This basic distinction accounts for an opposition between two series of vernacular notions which this society uses to think, describe, understand and act upon the universe as well as the society thus, the rituals, including the life-cycle rituals can be described along some basic principles which organise and account for spatio temporal movements. Some of the key notions of this society are actuated by a permanent rhythmic movement, which often takes the shape of a loop and which is related both to the notion of nitu and to this spatio temporal conceptualisation. The study of the internal exchanges of the mono-alu society was the foundation for a study of the relationships between this society and some buin (bougainville island) societies. These exchanges and the making of traditional shell money are interrelated with rituals as well as raids. This, in turn opens up new perspectives for the understanding of the relationships with choiseul island and between several societies of the north western solomons

Pełny tekst źródłaFrom 1750 to 1822, the Luxembourg gallery receives three painting exhibitions, focused on the perfectibility and perfection of the French school. By exhibiting first old masters, then old and modem ones, and finally living artists exclusively, masterpieces from the "Cabinet du roi" (1750-1779), the Senate gallery (1803-1815), and the Museum of living artists (1818-1822) define the notion of French school and how to consider its progress. 'Me Medici cycle by Rubens, in the west wing, is the moral ancestor of these museums. At the same time, the French school is focused on Nicolas Poussin, who is a standard even in the catalogs from the Museum of living artists. A vast literature - catalogs, Letters, Visits - is committed to the exhibitions of the Luxembourg, which attests to their advertising and success written by contemporaries, it links the exhibition to their the attention. Invented in the age of the Enlightenment and legitimized by the French Revolution, "museum" and "modernity" are attached to Luxembourg museums : posterity is being built at present, and paintings exhibited in the Museum of living artists - David, Vien, Girodet - may be at the Louvre after the death of the artists, along with their ancestors' paintings - Raphael, Carracci, Veronese, Lesueur. These exhibitions, coupled with the study of the French School's Special Museum in Versailles, and the sertes entitled Ports de France by Joseph Vernet, help retrace a chronology of exhibitions in both old and modern masters, thus retracing the invention of the Luxembourg

Pełny tekst źródłaHuman metapneumovirus (hMPV) is a major pathogen responsible of acute respiratory tract infections, such as bronchiolitis or pneumonia, affecting especially infants, under five years old, elderly individuals and immunocompromised adults. Identified since 2001, this virus and its pathogenesis still remain largely unknown and no licensed vaccines or specific antivirals against hMPV are currently available. In this context, my research project was built over two main subjects: (i) The study of the fusion F glycoprotein which is the major antigenic protein of hMPV and is responsible of viral entry into host cell. By its crucial role for the virus, the F protein has already been characterized in several structural and/or functional studies. Thus, it has been described that the hMPV F protein induces membrane fusion autonomously, resulting in variable cytopathic effects in vitro, in a strain-dependent manner. However, as the determinants of the hMPV fusogenic activity are not well characterized yet, we focused on identification of some of these, located in heptad repeats domains of the protein. (ii) The evaluation of hMPV SH and G gene deletion for viral attenuation. Liveattenuated hMPV vaccine candidates for infants’ immunization has been constructed thank to this deletion approach at the beginning of hMPV vaccine development efforts. Despite encouraging results, these candidates have not been further characterized and the importance of the viral background has not been evaluated

Pełny tekst źródłaThis thesis explores the ideas about grief and mourning in early modern England. Focusing on a body of printed texts including both normative discourses and occasional writings, it aims at describing and explaining the most common and widespread cultural constructs. Parallel to the theological valuing of feeling and suffering, the increasing place of grief in the ethos of funeral poetry and the erosion of the values of classical and humanist consolation signal deep changes in the patterns of behaviour available to the bereaved and their consolers. In the context of the penetration of Protestantism and the emergence of a baroque culture, theologians, moralists and poets emphasize the ethical and social meaning of grief and sorrow. The reaffirmation of the relationship between the living and the dead, defined as a community of brotherhood and love, also influences the representations of memory. As preachers rediscover and redefine the theory of funeral praise, they rely on both rhetorical patterns and theological doctrines to rewrite the lives of the deceased, which are made to conform to the Protestant ideal of godliness

Pełny tekst źródłaIn the Bamileke chiefdoms, the patrimonialization has been translated for severaldecades by the opening of museums. They have the particularity of preserving collectionsfrom the local communities who are the holders. Museum pieces are regularly taken out to be used in social life. This staging of heritage involves at least two groups of actors: on the one hand, the royal servants in charge of customary management, and on the other, the employees of the museum institutions. The ambivalent status of the objects raises questions about the relevance of conservation choices, insofar as they are modelled on the Western model. If it is accepted that the perception of heritage varies from one culture to another, it is also conceivable that the modes of preservation are plural. Based on the study of situated projects, the thesis explores alternative management and preservation approaches that bring together community knowledge and museum management standards. The proposed solutions take intoaccount local realities, chiefdoms' expectations and the types of objects to be preserved. This research is based on the hypothesis that any museum enterprise takes on meaning according to the cultural context and is necessarily part of a political action. The thesis defends the absence of a universal museography and shows that the preservation and valorisation of heritage depend largely on the society in which they are embedded

Pełny tekst źródłaLiving anionic polymerization technique was used to prepare dendronised polymers made of a polystyrene backbone and carbosilane dendrons. The monomers, namely 3,5-bis(3-triallylsilanyl-propyloxy)styrene (G1bis) and 3,4,5-tris(3-triallylsilanyl-propyloxy)styrene (G1tris), are fitted with respectively two and three allyl-terminated carbosilane dendrons of first generation. The best results were obtained in polar conditions (THF) at low temperature (-78°C). Polymers with monomodal masses distributions and low polydispersity have been produced. Steric effects brought by the dendrons result in a slow polymerization rate, leading to an apparent saturation of the degree of polymerisation. As a matter of fact, the highest molar mass polymers could only be obtained from the less sterically hindered monomer (G1bis). By increasing the temperature or by using 1,2-dimethoxyethane as solvent, we achieved to prepare polymers of increased molar masses, but having a slightly enlarged polydispersity. Finally, anionic block copolymerisation of G1bis with styrene demonstrated the living character of the polymerisation of G1bis. The allyl groups located at the dendron branch ends were used in a second step to functionalize the surface of the macromolecule. Perfluorinated chains were introduced using radical addition of thiols, whereas siloxane chains were grafted via an hydrosilylation reaction. The efficiency of these reactions were such that 5 or 6 chains could be grafted per monomer unit. This surface functionalisation led to polymers of remarkable properties, in term of solubility, thermal behaviour and structural organisation. For instance, a liquid crystal supramolecular organisation was found for the dendronised polymers when hyperfunctionalised with siloxane chains
