Streszczenie:
The article aims to sum up the reflections concerning visual culture and the visual aspect of life that have appeared in Polish sociology over the last twenty years as well as to analyse the area associated today with visual sociology. The authors give a short review of the history of Polish visual sociology, indicating at the beginning the most essential scientific and didactic events in this field. Further on, they analyse the ways of understanding the notion “visual sociology” (and its cognate notions). They present the use of photography in anthropology and in social research, and give a critical analysis of the studies and representation of visual culture at the beginning of the 20th century. This leads them to the designation of two scopes of the contemporary notion of visual sociology: a more narrow (methodological) one and a broader one (which they call: “the sociology of visual culture”). In all, this analysis shows the ways in which the term “visual sociology” (and its cognate terms) has been gradually adopted, developed and re-defined in Poland.

Streszczenie:
This article reports on the incorporation of visual material as a tool for learning sociology and discusses a poster assignment introduced as a means of assessment in an academic context committed to innovative learning strategies and to teaching and learning enhancement. The article draws on an evaluation of using the poster assignment to assess student learning and argues that visual images can provide valid and insightful ways of 'telling about society' which challenge the reliance on text as a means of teaching and learning sociology. The article explores the context in which visual materials are used in teaching and learning sociology and their impact on and significance for assessment and learning.

Streszczenie:
In this article, I discuss a queer method for uniting visual sociology, digital sociology, and constructivist grounded theory to conduct innovative research into how lesbian couples experience the transition to first-time parenthood, based on my longitudinal doctoral research in sociology. I first attend to the complex and unexpected unfolding of the research design, which evolved with the needs of the population to move from adapted photovoice interviews to the use of textual–visual online pregnancy journal data in a process emblematic of queer methodology. I then consider the contributions that visual data can make to the study of reproduction, especially where marginalized populations are concerned, by using my data to demonstrate how visuals create what is possible, rework oppressive versions of time, and challenge controlling images imposed on reproducing bodies. I argue here not just for the significance of images but for the significance of taking seriously the products and processes that communities find meaningful, and for evolving our research methods and methodologies to centralize marginalized ways of existing, knowing, and archiving experiences of reproduction and family life.

Streszczenie:
One way to comprehend social reality is to watch animation films and animation series that broadcast gender models. In connection with the changes taking place in modern ideas about gender, it will be relevant to study gender roles that function in modern animation cinema. The purpose of the article is to study the theoretical and methodological approaches of visual sociology, used in the study of gender, for further selection of the most optimal methods in the study of gender models broadcast in modern animation cinema. Based on the system-analytical method, an overview of the degree of development of the problems of visual analysis of gender is made; the definitions of the concept of "gender" are considered. The authors believe that the most relevant will be the understanding of gender as a system of sociocultural norms constructed by society, which represent a number of characteristics and can be fixed by the methods of visual sociology. The main approaches of visual sociology are systematized: psychoanalytic, socio-critical, deconstructionist, hermeneutic, semiotic, (post)structuralist and discursive. The most correct methods of visual analysis in the study of gender (video surveillance, photo and video interviews, content analysis) have been substantiated. The authors conclude that for a qualitative analysis of gender problems in animated cinema, it is necessary to use classical methods of visual sociology in combination with additional methods of sociology (hermeneutic analysis, semiotic interpretation, focus groups).

Streszczenie:
The concept of practice occurs frequently in current research about the visual. However, the term remains problematic as it cannot always clarify the complexity of the topic. Following an initial discussion of the subject area and central questions of a sociology of visual communication, I proceed to show that visual practices are embedded in many different social structures that condition forms of practice. This aspect is reflected on theoretically with reference to the concept of artifacts outlined by Herbert Simons in Sciences of the Artificial. As Simons does not seek to establish any connection to sociology, his thoughts must first be developed for the discipline. This is achieved, inter alia, by taking up the structural concepts of Giddens and Luhmann. Having established this background, the notion of practice is reconsidered in relation to the structures of social realities and to a concept of the sociology of visual communication. In the discussion, methodological and methodical conclusions are drawn from these conceptual considerations, which are important for the further development of the analysis of the visual.
