Streszczenie:
This paper investigates the reflection of “visual turn”in semiotic research, the relationship between visual history and semiotics. The aim of the research is to investigate the relationship between visual history and semiotics and to reflect this relationship in scholarly research. The English-language works of such famous researchers and cultural theorists as Ferdinand de Saussure, Michel Foucault, Algirdas Julius Greimas, Jean Francois Lyotard, Jacques Lacan, Ludwig Wittgenstein, Jacques Derrida Jacques Derrida, Umberto Eco, Mi-chael Halliday, Charles Peirce, Noam Chomsky, and others were analyzed in this paper. History does not speak for itself, so the work of аhistorian is always interpretive. The appeal to the visual here is not a turn away from other ways, other meanings of making history. The visual is seen here as a special form of knowledge, requiring its own ways of apprehending it. This engagement with the visual will undoubtedly have a significant impact on our understanding of archives and historiography in general but does not claim to privilege the visual domain as offering a special kind of access to the past

AbstractIn this article we explore the relationship between semiotic analysis of images and quantitative analysis of vast image corpora, in particular the work produced by Lev Manovich and the Cultural Analytics Lab, called “Media Visualization.” Media Visualization has been chosen as corpus because of its metavisual operation (images are visualized and analyzed by images) and its innovating way of conceiving analysis: by visual instruments. In this paper semiotics is used as an approach to Media Visualization and taken as an object of study as well, especially visual semiotics. In this sense, a comparison between visual semiotics (close reading of small corpora) and quantitative analyses of images (distant reading of vast collections) are conducted from a semiotic point of view. Post-Greimassian semiotics guides this study with respect to the issue of the image-within-an-image and metavisual visualization; Peircean semiotics is employed to explain and develop the notion of diagram.

This study employs semiotic theory to explore the visual symbols and their meanings in contemporary Chinese art. By analyzing the visual symbols of specific artworks through case studies and interpreting their meanings centered around Roland Barthes's theory of myth, the research delves into the association between art and semiotics in various artistic forms including two-dimensional, three-dimensional, and digital visual symbols. Focusing on works created after the 1979 'Star Art Exhibition', it provides a nuanced understanding of the semiotics and visual symbols in contemporary Chinese art, demonstrating semiotics as a valuable framework for in-depth analysis. The findings reveal that through semiotic analysis, contemporary Chinese art can be seen as a 'text' with profound socio-cultural meanings, enhancing our comprehension of the intricate interplay and deeper significations between contemporary art and signs.

The article deals with the problem of visuality in the context of space from the point of view of visual semiotics. The choice of the problem determined the methodology, which is based on a semiotic approach. Visual semiotics uses induction as the main tool: analyzing individual elements of space, i.e. signs, it moves to the generalization of the results at the level of semiotics as a whole. The author believes that visual images captured in various architectural structures play an important role in shaping the social structure, the space of everyday communication, and the interaction practices of observing subjects. The purpose of the article is to characterize the basic principles of visual semiotics which reflect the theoretical understanding of urban architecture as a sign system. It is established that the main theoretical principles of visual semiotics in relation to space consist in the following provisions: first, visual artifacts which flood the city space are facts of communication, since they have a linguistic orientation and are perceived as signs. Secondly, the main property for a visual message is capacity – in a short period of time, the subject is able to perceive a much larger amount of information than from the text. And third, it is established that reading and generating new interpretations of urban space occur through everyday practices, during which the surrounding visual space is appropriated and personalized.

The main objective of the study of semiotic theory provides a framework for understanding how humans use signs to make sense of their environment. Semiotic theory holds that signs do not convey meaning that is inherent in the object being represented. Semiotics is a method of studying communication that focuses on all types of communication rather than just spoken or written language. Semiotics, also known as Sign, is any object that can communicate meaning to a sign interpreter. The meaning could be intentional or accidental. The sign may also convey feelings that are reflected on the mind by any of these senses, such as visual, tactile, auditory, imaginary, and others. Signs and sign processes, symbolism, metaphor, indication, designation, and communication are all relevant subjects to explore as well as investigate the systems of nonverbal communication. The logical dimension of visuals as semiotics will be the focus of this paper.

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to identify the relationship between semiotics theory and communication theory and focus on how semiotics could act as a useful tool to play a big role in the development of communication competencies of library professionals in the contemporary information system. Design/ Methodology/ Approach: The study is fundamentally analytical and qualitative in nature. The analysis of semiotic theory and communication theory is done one by one. In this paper, we use the semiotics theory approach in library services and propose an illustrative library classification list based on Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) for the development of an effective communication competency as well as improve the visual literacy skills of library professionals. Findings: After the study, we find out that the semiotic theory is a general and unrestricted model of sign whereas communication theory is also a general and unrestricted model of communication which is useful for every field of study including the LIS field. Semiotics theory and Communication theory both are very similar and Semiotics build a strong communication competency and improve the visual literacy skills of library professionals. Practical implications: This study will be helpful for library professionals to develop their competencies according to the needs of the hour. Users will be more beneficial and attracted to the library than the formal mode of communication. Those people who cannot communicate in an unknown language and are unable to articulate language can also communicate easily through the visual mode of communication with the help of semiotics. Originality: This paper is the first to combine the theories of communication and semiotics within the context of the competency development of library professionals.

AbstractThis paper focuses on the main features and evolution of the so-called “debate on iconism,” in which Eco was deeply involved. This discussion (one of the most important in general and visual semiotics) began at the end of the 1960s and dealt with the problem of reality and image perception. It was characterized by the contrast between the supporters of visual language “naturality” and those of its “conventionality.” In La Struttura assente (1968) and Trattato di semiotica generale (1975, A Theory of Semiotics), Eco elaborated a moderate conventionalist theory. More than 20 years later, in Kant e l’ornitorinco (1997, Kant and the Platypus), he focused his attention on the link between reality and visual language. The article aims to understand what has really changed in Eco’s theory and how far the reflections in Kant e l’ornitorinco were already implied in his first ideas. Besides, the article underlines the importance of perceptive modalities theory, Eco’s most recent contribution to visual semiotics.

As a special type of multimodal text, picture books for children are highly valued in the creation of meaning by the integrative use of verbal and visual semiotic resources. Informed by Painter and Martin’s framework of visual narratives, this paper primarily deals with the interpersonal meanings encoded and expressed by the two semiotics (image and verbiage) within the Chinese picture books. It aims to analyse the visual and verbal choices available for writers to establish engagement between various participants. In the hope of investigating the collaboration and interplay of verbal and visual semiotics to construe interpersonal meanings, it examines the attitudinal meanings inscribed or invoked in picture books, exploring the ways in which visual and verbal resources are co-instantiated to encode attitudinal convergence and also divergence.

AbstractThe evaluation of visual aspects of law has had a profound influence in the last decade in specific fields of legal sciences (i. e., criminology, studies of legal evidence), focusing on the extent to which visual evidence (visual patterns, images, diagrams, and symbols) underpin what and how we can perceive different types of legal evidence, and how the difference in perception affects the manipulation of visual evidence in practice. Taking the recent development in the field of legal evidence seriously, we could claim that the visual communication in law is above all a means of communicating and understanding different types of visual evidence. In general terms, visual exhibits (symbols, images, graphs, photographs, etc.) have the potential to convey more complex meanings and often represent concepts that are challenging to articulate explicitly in more conventional verbal forms of evidence, due to their complexity or lack of specificity. The purpose of this paper is to define the nature and properties of visual aids from a semiotic perspective Visual semiotics offers exceptionally thorough analytical tools for the detailed and nuanced study of visual legal evidence in the courts. In the final part of the paper we’ll illustrate the application of semiotic analysis for evaluating the rules of evidence in the Estonian legal system.

Streszczenie:
Visual identity systems allow a visual object to stand for, and provide suggestive expression of, a host. The primary graphic element in a visual identity system is the logo. In three sections, this article explores inportant semiotic mechanisms by which logos perform the work of identifying. The first section points to the difference between basic visual differentiation (boundary coherence) and affective/cognitive reference (semantic coherence). It makes a distinction between two kinds of reference that occur simultaneously in logos: (1) an immediate referencing of the host entity (the entity for which identification is sought), and (2), indirect, reference that is often metaphoric in character. The second section offers a four-part classification scheme for logos based upon a Peircean icon/index/symbol division with the addition of an axis of syntactical detail. A “hidden” class of logo is predicted by this Peircean framework; examples are identified and this class is named “gesturegraphs”. It is argued that this four-part classification scheme is both semiotically necessary and sufficient. Any further classes of logos can be considered subclasses within the four semiotic factors proposed. These classes are not judged to be discrete, but rather to afford blended and combinatorial situations. The rhetorical tropes of metonym and metaphor are discussed in terms of their value to the pictographic mode of logo design. Finally, in the third section of the article, genre is defined as the coherence of stylistic features in relation to the sector of the host’s activity. Two case studies are given as examples of how genre influences the semantical context of logos.

AbstractIn this paper, the basic concepts of Peircean semiotics are derived from visual experience by the process of conceptual embodiment. We begin with embodiment of the universal Categories of Being that are accessible to thought or the universal Categories of Thought, which Charles S. Peirce defined and termed Firstness, Secondness, and Thirdness. On this basis, we demonstrate conceptual embodiments of the Peircean typologies of dyadic relations, triadic relations and representations. The phenomenology of visual perception is modeled as a triadic typology of embodied mental processes which we term detection, localization and identification. Based upon the pioneering work of Lakoff and Johnson, we examine the role of visual embodiment in concept formation as inferred from linguistic expressions. We conclude that certain fundamental physical and relational concepts may be regarded as the embodied interpretants of visual signs.

This article adopts a semiotic (and edusemiotic) perspective that abolishes all binary divisions in favour of the process of semiosis that ensures a continuous translation of signs into other signs via the dynamic relations formed by the human mind, cultural artefacts, and events in real life. The mind, in edusemiotics, partakes of unconscious ideas in the form of mental images. As for culture, the field of communication phenomena calls for, according to Yuri Lotman, the identification of specific semiotic systems representing their ‘languages’, including non-verbal signs such as images, pictures, and other art forms that function as cultural texts. The methodology of bricolage (conceptualized in educational research by Joe Kincheloe) combines hermeneutics with narratology, and ‘reading’ images becomes imperative for advancing critical pedagogy. The article examines and interprets selected images, including those belonging to the low end of popular culture, and connects them with the exemplarily significant event at the level of socio-cultural reality. The paradoxical self-referential ‘logic’ is the prerogative of semiotic reason that constantly reflects on – thus bringing to cognition and transforming – our often unconscious assumptions, beliefs and habits thus contributing to the construction of subjectivity that uses critical reason informed by signs, which include the bricolage of images.

Abstract Multimodality is a term widely discussed by linguistics and semiotics. It means the combination of different semiotic modes, for example, language and music in a communicative artifact or event (Leeuwen, 2005). In this research, the researcher examines multimodal advertising for cigarette products. The cigarette products named is Djarum 76 and Sampoerna Kretek. This research is intended to 1) how semiotic systems in Djarum 76 and Sampoerna Kretek advertisements express meaning? 2) What is the generic structure placed in both advertisements? 3) What are the differences between semiotic systems in Djarum 76 and Sampoerna Kretek cigarette’s audiovisual advertisements? This research used the descriptive qualitative method. Analysis in this research using the semiotics approach focused on multimodal systems that include linguistic, visual, audio, and gestural aspects. Linguistic analysis using Systemic Functional Linguistic by (Halliday, 2004), visual, audio, and gestural analysis using Anstey and Bull (2010) theories, and Choeng (2004) formulation of generic structure potential for print advertisement. It required a general comprehension of social semiotics to obtain a deeply understanding to visual grammar. The differences between social semiotics and general semiotics expressed to accomplish its purpose. The concern of visual grammar is the relationship between ‘drawn participants’ and social life. Visual grammar can be positioned as a contemporary approach to visual texts meaning-making. The theory used in this research was the multimodal semiotics theory by Kress and Leewuen (2011) in their book entitled Multimodal Discourse Analysis. The method applied in this research was a descriptive qualitative method. Based on data analysis, it was found that cosmetic advertisements have various multimodal semiotics such as verbal, visual, gestural, and audio. Verbal elements in the form of speech and writing which are dominated by declarative sentences. Visual elements refer to female figures in advertisements and other things with certain color. Gesture elements include smiling facial expressions, sparkling eyes, touching skin, and other movements. Audio elements come from bee sound effects, traditional Javanese music sounds, and so on. Meanwhile, the meanings of beauty conveyed through the multimodal semiotic elements refer to the meaning of physical beauty such as olive skin, white skin like jicama fruit, thick and beautiful hair, stormy hair, and graceful attitude.

This article contributes to the research program of “visual turn” in International Relations (IR). It specifically engages Ronald Bleiker's methodological proposal which is rooted in assemblage thinking and calls for a comprehensive and pluralistic understanding of the relationship between visuality and politics. In this framework, semiotics should play a prominent role in attending to the role of images in (co)constituting the international politics. However, we show that Bleiker’s conceptualization of semiotics and its concepts is rather vague. The text therefore discusses how we can approach semiotics in a more rigorous way, and how the concepts of 'symbolism' and 'symbolic signs' can be understood from a semiotic perspective inspired mostly by work of Charles S. Peirce. The text thus offers theoretically sophisticated answer to Bleiker’s call for semiotically informed visual analysis. We illustrate our arguments by discussing scholarship on the politics of jihadist videos.

The paper attempts to define the term semiotics of photography. Approach to the theme was started from the concept of semiotics. Since the 60s of the last century, "semiotics", which studies the characters, has begun to affect changes in the humanities and natural sciences. After Ferdinand de Saussure, the study of signs focused on humans need labeling, especially on the logic of "communication" and disclosure "codes" that form the background of diverse cultural phenomena. Semiotics provides to understand in a different way, by language and framework, the link between the image and society. It is also a method that can be used to expose photos, studying mass media, literary texts and systematically analyze a number of other features of the popular culture. In the modern, technologically developed world, man is exposed to photos more than ever (billboards, advertisements, magazines, art photography... ). Visual impact, as the most convincing form of attracting attention, affects the formation of opinions and attitudes, encouraging consumption and serves in many other commercial or political purposes. Therefore, semiotics, science which studies signs and their meanings, is becoming more important scientific discipline in explaining sociosemiotic aspects of society. In the paper is analized the photo in a different context using semiotics to understand it. Assuming that the symbolism of the publicly engaged photos exposed to the public differs from those intended for the specialized or limited audience, will be attempted to prove that the former is expected to influence with emotions, more shocking attempt to attract attention, and the later let observers themselves to decode picture.

This article presents an analysis of the soundscapes in two rural communities in northwestern Papua New Guinea where the endangered languages Srenge and Walman are spoken. These languages have no written tradition and therefore are not publicly displayed in signage. In the last few years, the discipline of linguistic landscape studies has fostered the study of aspects of the visual semiotics of public signs together with aspects of other semiotic modalities including interactional semiotics and auditory semiotics. By discussing the sounds of instruments, conch shells, place names, recitations, and messenger birds in areas where Srenge, Walman, and other languages are spoken, the aim is twofold. The first goal is to fill a gap in the study of semiotic systems that play a role in linguistic landscapes by focusing on a rural area and on auditory semiotics. The second goal is to document anthropological knowledge in an area that is extremely rich culturally and linguistically but where language attrition and cultural loss have been greatly accelerated in the last few decades.

This research presents an intersection between the field of InformationScience and Semiotics, through a correlation between information representation and plastic semiotics, since both areas present concerns in relation to language and representation. The objective of this research, of qualitative approach, exploratory character and applied nature, is to analyze the theoretical foundations of plastic semiotics and discuss the possibility of establishing relations between information representation and these semiotic foundations in order to contribute to the theoretical and epistemological bases of Information Organization. Through bibliographic research procedures, in the Google Scholar, Periódicos Capes, Dialnet and BRAPCIdatabases, as well as consultations in specialized books on the theme, the results are elaborated using the content analysis method. As results, an analysis of comics is presented, as a practical and applied example of how such theory can contribute to the representation of visual and/or syncretic objects. It is concluded that plastic semiotics has much to contribute to the field of Information Science, especially in the thematic representation for document interpretation, by analyzing the visual aspects identifying signs and meanings present in the works, making it possible to direct the technical reading, identification and description of the content, important steps in indexing.

AbstractIn this paper, the dyadic concept of zero sign in general linguistics is transformed into a triadic concept of zero sign in visual semiotics. A formal duality relation is defined between two types of visual zero sign. It is argued that the common experience of failure to perceive visual zero signs may be due to either inattention of the interpreter or camouflage of the object of the sign. We conclude that dual zero signs act as detectors in visual semiotics.

The purpose of the research is to carry out a comparative analysis of the concepts of semiotics of cinema by Roland Barthes and Yurii Lotman in the context of their understanding of the nature of film language, since understanding and methods of studying of contemporary digital audiovisual art are the topic of current interest in contemporary art history. The research methodology. The contemporary study of digital audiovisual art, as a rule, takes place within the context of interdisciplinary work, therefore, one of the methodological principles of such work is structural and semiotic approach. Today, this methodological approach to study the audiovisual art is the most developed in the semiotics of cinema, therefore the visual semiotics is viewed through the semiotics of cinema. The scientific novelty of the research. For the first time a comparative analysis of Yurii Lotman’s and Roland Barthes’s semiotics of cinema within the framework of the structural and semiotic approach was carried out. The potential of this methodological approach in the study of audiovisual art has been revealed. Conclusions. The article highlights the special aspects of understanding and application of semiotic concepts by the mentioned authors based on the cinematographic material. Thus, Roland Barthes thought that problems in a semiotic study of the cinema occur when a linguistic approach is applied, and Yurii Lotman believed such study to be completely acceptable. This resulted in a different understanding by these scientists of the nature of film language, its minimal meaningful unit, the role of syntagmatics and paradigmatics in the film narration. Different perceptions of the nature of film language and its components are an important basis for the study of contemporary digital audiovisual arts. The main difficulty of semiotics of cinema is the issue of non discrete iconic (analogue) sign in the study of cinema within the framework of the structural and semiotic approach. This problem can be solved based on the legacy of semiotics of cinema of R. Barthes and Yu. Lotman. Another important characteristic of the structural and semiotic approach is its ability to be combined with other methodological approaches in the interdisciplinary study of digital audiovisual art

Semiotics is emerged a major theoretical and analytical approach in the media-driven era of 21st century. In the history of human evolution, use and analysis of signs to communicate have the utmost importance. Before verbal and written linguistic discourse, the use of signs remains in human communication. Semiotics is thought to be a structural and linguistic approach but as Saussure has asserted that semiotics is broad, inclusive and comprehensive in nature and scope, while linguistics is a part of it. Modern media is scientifically and technologically more enhanced and inclusive of various signs through technological gadgets. McLuhan regards ‘media is message’. Like language in literature, various audio-visual and graphic signs are employed for effective expression in media texts. Language is a ‘sign system’ of human communication which is mainly androcentric and needs to be challenged and explored through a feminist perspective. The idea is to study semiotics in feminist context i.e. to be regarded as ‘feminist semiotics. The emergence of the feministic approach changed perception in every field of life and brought various possible interpretations. As the signs employed in media texts mainly androcentric, the feminist semiotics attempts to expose and deconstruct them. Advertisements especially, consumer ads either in print or in electronic media are published having the notion of ‘art for market’s sake’ or ‘art for profit’s sake’ which need to be considered and analyzed as ‘media text’. In this research article, efforts are made to explore and blend feminist contextual approach with semiotics to analyze advertising texts. There is a multitude of audio-visual and electronic driven gadgets in the present digital world therefore, it needs to be interpreted from feminist semiotic perspective.

AbstractPosters present in the community have a special meaning in informing a message. However, posters are only limited to media. The essential thing in a poster is the message that is reported through verbal and visual signs. This paper attempts to reveal the marking system presented in a public service advertisement poster 'smoke rise_asapa' by Aji Windu Viatra. The characters shown in this poster represent the saturation and adverse effects caused by the haze disaster that occurs every year in Indonesia, especially in the city of Palembang, one of the cities most severely affected by this disaster. In this poster work, verbal signs or visual signs are pretty interesting to be dissected and analyzed with the semiotic communication approach in Ferdinand De Saussure's style. As a scientific discipline, semiotics is a method of study (decoding) and creation (encoding). As a method of creating (encoding), semiotics has a strong influence on art, one of which is visual communication design. Representatively a sign presented has specific rules and procedures that must be obeyed so that the character can communicate and is easy to understand.

The paper discusses the complex genre of tourist booklet as a fixed type of multimodal text that serves in a communicative situation of promoting a tourist product. This genre is a semiotically complex phenomenon, which conveys information through different semiotic systems. The methodological issues are posed as to a perspective model of genre analysis that would take into account the multimodal nature of genres. The author points to major hindrances that an analyst faces when doing multimodal analysis. The study focuses on discovering mechanisms of the interplay between verbal and visual components on semantic and formal levels, as well as showing how the elements of multimodal analysis can be targeted at various genre parameters. The booklets (85 items) for the study were collected in 2007–2019 in Australia, Great Britain, Germany, Poland, Russia and other countries. Methodologically, the paper draws on speech genre theory, semiotics, critical discourse analysis, and multimodal analysis. The claims are advanced that the tourist booklet has both obligatory and optional features, the visual component being obligatory. It is revealed that the colours of visuals can have factual and modal meanings embedded in them; photos convey precedent meanings; while using different semiotic codes, visual and verbal elements join the convergence relations and, thus, provide for genre coherence. The complex genre includes intertextual links between genres in its structure. These links may be of cross-code nature, since they are established between the elements of different semiotic systems, verbal and non-verbal. The conclusion is drawn that a consistent analytical model for multimodal genres has to be designed.

The article explores the ways in which the Greimasian method of semiotics can be applied to the analysis of contemporary Lithuanian poetry texts, specifically visual poetry. Bearing in mind the nature of visual poetry, I consider a semiotic approach, which allows explaining the strategies of meaning making in visual poetry. The methodological question goes back to the origins of Algirdas Julius Greimas’ semiotics, in particular the works of Louis Hjelmslev. I draw attention that based on Hjelmslev’s approach, it is important not only to treat any unit of meaning as a certain relationship between the plane of content and the plane of expression, but in the case of visual poetry, also to supplement it with a more detailed description of Hjelmslev’s levels of language (form–substance–purport) and their interrelations. It calls attention to the plane of expression, which has a special status in visual poetry. I argue that one of the most important conditions for the emergence of signification in visual poetry is the phenomenon of unstable correlation, which is a semiotic relationship between the plane of expression and the plane of content that appears as a process of production of reciprocal presupposition, which, in turn, is dependent on the focus point of reader’s gaze. In the first part of the article, in which I address theoretical considerations regarding all the above-mentioned topics, I examine how the model of structural linguistics can assist in complementing the semiotic analysis of visual poetry. In the second part, I analyze two works by contemporary Lithuanian visual poets using the proposed model of meaning creation: “PASTAZENKLAS ISLEISTAS KREPSINIO CEMPIJONATUJ” (“A POSTALSTAMP ISSUED FOR THE FOOTBALL CHEMPIONSHIP”) by Gytis Norvilas (2006) and “om rekonstrukcija I“ (“om reconstruction I”) by Donaldas Apanavičius from his three-poem cycle (1999). The analysis reveals the points of unstable correlation and various reading possibilities.
