Pełny tekst źródłaENGLISH ABSTRACT: The cinematic communication process starts with the creative enunciation by the filmmaker and ends with the viewer's subjective perception of the film. This thesis represents a theoretical and experiential investigation of this process and entails critical and self-reflexive discussions of stylistic approaches to filmic representation. The focus of this representation falls on on-screen violence. This study is a practice-led process, and therefore the fields of research are applied to my own work, namely the filmmaking process of a feature film entitled Preek. The research was prompted by my need to take an academic stance on the filmmaking process, instead of a mere practical one, and to form an intellectual awareness of the filmmaker and viewer dynamic. As a practicing filmmaker interested in the mimetic quality of film representations, it was necessary for me to form a conscious apprehension of how a film may be understood as a reflection on reality on the one hand, and an expression formulated through the filmmakers creative decisions on the other. The representation of violence in film was investigated by the way of critical readings of selected films, framed by both contemporary and classical film theory. Through contemporary film theory, I investigated the viewer's perception and identification with the film's diegesis, and particularly with its characters. The „classic‟ film theories of the realists and formalists allowed me to discern two stylistic approaches to the representation of violence in film, and to explore the emotional affect and cathartic release these approaches may elicit from viewers. These discussions were then applied to my own film Preek, in order to critically understand the relationship between filmmaker and viewer. The research and the application thereof, indicated that the stylistic approach to the representation of violence and its intensity in a film, unveils the filmmaker's motivation for communicating through the film medium. The arguments showed that I represented the violence in Preek in such a way that it may result in a traumatic affect on the viewer rather than an appreciation of its aesthetic value, and that this affect is the result of an engagement with the film's diegesis, due to the viewer's own identificatory participation. The research concluded that the viewer's subjective identification with the film forms a triangular relationship and communication between filmmaker, film and viewer.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die kinematiese kommunikasieproses begin met die kreatiewe uitdrukking van die filmmaker, en eindig met die kyker se subjektiewe waarneming van die film. Hierdie tesis verteenwoordig 'n teoretiese en ervaringsgerigte ondersoek van die kinematiese kommunikasieproses, en behels kritiese en self-reflektiewe argumente van stilistiese benaderings tot filmiese uitbeelding. Die fokus van hierdie uitbeelding is op geweld gerig. Die navorsing is 'n prakties-georiënteerde studie en daarom word die navorsing op my eie werk toegepas, naamlik die filmmaak-proses van die vollengte film, Preek. Die navorsing was aangespoor deur my behoefte daaraan om die filmmaak-proses vanuit 'n akademiese oogpunt te benader, in pleks daarvan om 'n suiwer praktiese posisie teenoor die filmmaak-proses in te neem. Vervolgens is die navorsing aangespoor deur my behoefte daaraan om intellektuele bewustheid oor die dinamika tussen die filmmaker en kyker te skep. As 'n praktiserende filmmaker wat geïnteresseerd is in die mimetiese eienskap van film-uitbeeldings, was dit vir my belangrik om 'n duidelike begrip te ontwikkel van die manier waarop film verstaan kan word, eertstens as 'n weerspieëling van realiteit, en tweedens as ‟n uitdrukking wat deur die kreatiewe besluite van die filmmaker gevorm is. Die verteenwoordiging van geweld in films is ondersoek deur middel van die kritiese beskouing van uitgesoekte films wat deur beide kontemporêre en klassieke film-teorie gevorm is. Ek het deur kontemporêre film teorie die kyker se waarneming en vereenselwiging met die film se diegesis en veral die film se karakters, ondersoek. Die klasieke film teorieë van die realiste en formaliste het my in staat gestel om tussen twee stilistiese benaderings tot die uitbeelding van geweld in film te onderskei, en om die emosionele effek en katartiese vrystelling wat hierdie benaderings by die kyker kan ontlok, te verken. Hierdie besprekings is gevolglik toegepas op my film, Preek, ten einde 'n kritiese begrip van die verhouding tussen filmmaker en kyker te vorm. Die navorsing en die toepassing daarvan het getoon dat die stilistiese benadering tot die uitbeelding van geweld, asook die intensiteit daarvan in film, die filmmaker se motivering tot kommunikasie deur die film-medium ontbloot. Pełny tekst źródłaThis thesis deals with my master’s degree project "Suspense" with the Swedish title “Oviss väntan". The project resulted in a video installation consisting of animated loops displayed on screens with headphones and a sound-shower at Bildmuseet in Umeå, Sweden in May 2021. My essay begins with a presentation of myself and my background as an animator. I describe my artistic practice, how I work and what I have been influenced by. This is followed by a presentation of the project itself, where I discuss important parts of the project, such as themes and atmosphere, materials, form and visualization. This essay will be completed before the exhibition at Bildmuseet. Therefore, the images in the essay will focus more on the process than on the finished work. "Suspense" is based on the idea that all fictional characters exist in real life. The characters live together in a fictional house where they are waiting to be used. The film portrays this house, where the characters are housed in the different rooms, with a variation in materials and animation techniques. The film conveys a mood of waiting but also of longing. I believe that these themes have been enhanced by the current pandemic. A suspense we do not know when it will end - if it even ends. Another of my themes is loneliness. This loneliness that can exist in an apartment even though only walls and floors separates us from others. The characters in the film will move in loops. Through these loops, along with music, sounds and voices, the film moves forward. The rhythm and its feeling will create a form, with a non-narrative structure. A moving painting.

The material, a film to market gaming console Playstation 2, is being analyzed through a visual analysis, combined with a film- and narrative analysis. The thesis resulted in the finding that the creators have, with the help of narrative, film technical methods such as picture and sound, as well as prior knowledge of commercials, tried to form a specific audience’s expectations with the purpose of selling a gaming console.

Pełny tekst źródłaDet huvudsakliga syftet med denna uppsatts är att undersöka huruvida individer medkompetens inom film och foto kan identifiera digitalt bearbetat material. Studienkommer med hjälp av en enkät skapa en statistiks bild av ett stickprov. Deltagarna ienkäten är en utvald demografi bestående av nuvarande studenter vid HögskolanDalarna (inom filmproduktion) och även examinerade studenter. Dessa individer delasgenom enkäten upp i olika grupper baserad på deras kompetens inom film och foto.Själva enkäten består av två tester där deltagare bes skilja på ett material som är filmatmed ett diffuserande kamerafilter (Tiffen pro mist) och ett material som behandlatsdigitalt för att återskapa samma effekt. Vad diffusion är och hur det påverkar bildenkommer också utvecklas i texten. Totalt har 36 individer deltagit i studien, resultatetvisar inte något definitivt svar i frågeställningen för någon av kompetensgrupperna.Detta tyder på att det i fallet för diffusion inte nödvändigtvis finns en särskilt starkfördel med att använda ett analogt kamerafilter. Det som dock kan fastställas är att enhögre kompetens inom film och foto innebär en övergripande generell kunskap omkamerafilter och den digitala processen.

Starting from anachronism as an important topic in history writing and memory discourses, this work intends to deal with some film practices with a strong will if reflection about time and chronologies. Starting from a specific practice as the essay film, analyzed from an aesthetical point of view, a topic comes out about the links between cinema and times, between a multiplicity of image forms and an anachronic time questioning forms, histories, interpretations, links and relationships. If Jean-Luc Godard's Histoire(s) du cinéma (1988-97) questions the sense of cinema itself, his plurality in a dense, complex network, Wim Wender's Tokyo-Ga (1983) interrogates some links between past cinema and more actual film forms, between a memory of cinema and the difficult search for the image's present, actual time. With Sans soleil (1982) and Level Five (1996), Chris Marker crosses cinema, images and their transformations with the complex links between past, present and future, in a context in which time can be presented according to the images forms. In some of this essays, Alexander Kluge gives strategie importance to images of every sort but also to the relationship between the images we produce and our history. All the analyzed films develop some theoretical questions about gaze's practices : every image is the sign of a complexe relationship between history and our starting from history, in accordance with a plural practice of the image

Pełny tekst źródłaThis bachelor thesis examines the construction of a narrative in a fictional film. The purpose is to acquire knowledge of what a narrative in a fictional film consist of and what it affects. Through the sign of semiotics, we get an understanding of how everything can get a significance and then be used to communicate something to the user. The concept of multimodality has then been used to understand how signs work in an interplay with each other. We examine the narrative by making our own fictional film that we then analyse to get a better understanding of the importance of the signs we used and how the narrative was influenced by our choices. We will present the results we achieved, the types of adversities we encountered and other discussions about the outcome.

Pełny tekst źródłaThe overall aim of this dissertation is to investigate how students engage with visual representations as a signifying practice in an educational context. This question is scrutinized through two young girls’ three video films and interviews with the producers. The study is guided by an interest in what these young students communicate with their films, how this is done and how they relate to the cultural and social world in their representation. The title, Ambiguous Images, alludes to the signifying work with film, images and words done by the two girls. The films raise topics such as sexuality, equality and gender which set their mark on the situation of young females, both in school and in their leisure time. The result shows that moving images fulfil the function of negotiating the significations as well as making it possible for the girls to create their own alternative representations. Each film contributes an alternative discourse, in contrast to dominant texts that apply to the constitution of the cultural and social context they address. The study demonstrates that learning is a process of selection, adaptation and transformation motivated by the interests of the pupils and the context of learning. Other important issues are also raised concerning the students’ possibilities to participate in and influence the school subject in question. This involves both the opportunity of engagement with a multiplicity of modes and the possibility to adopt their own voice and view of the world. Both the methodological and the theoretical approach in the dissertation have multimodal and social-semiotic perspectives, which are combined with a design approach. These combinations are united in a presentation of representation and communication as a social process of sign-making.
