Streszczenie:
Transient wave processes in viscoelastic structures built from functionally graded material (FGM) still remain almost unexplored. In this article, the problem of the propagation of nonstationary longitudinal waves in an infinite viscoelastic layer of a FGM with plane–parallel boundaries is considered. The physical and mechanical parameters of the FGM depend continuously on the transverse coordinate, while the wave process propagates along the same coordinate. The viscoelastic properties of the material are taken into account employing the linear integral Boltzmann–Volterra relations. The viscoelastic layer of the FGM is replaced by a piecewise-homogeneous layer consisting of a large number of sub-layers (a package of homogeneous layers), thus approximating the continuous inhomogeneity of the FGM. A solution of a non-stationary dynamic problem for a piecewise-homogeneous layer is constructed and, using a specific example, the convergence of the results with an increase in the number of sub-layers in the approximating piecewise-homogeneous layer is shown. Furthermore, the problem of the propagation of nonstationary longitudinal waves in the cross section of an infinitely long viscoelastic hollow FGM cylinder, whose material properties continuously change along the radius, is also considered. The cylinder composed of the FGM is replaced by a piecewise-homogeneous one, consisting of a large number of coaxial layers, for which the solution of the non-stationary dynamic problem is constructed. For both the layer and the cylinder composed of a viscoelastic FGM, the results of calculating the characteristic parameters of the wave processes for the various initial data are presented. The influence of the viscosity and inhomogeneity of the material on the dynamic processes is demonstrated.

A five-layer cantilever beam consisting of an elastic core, two symmetric viscoelastic layers, and two elastic constraining layers is considered. The viscoelastic effects are incorporated in the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. If the contraction and extension of the constraining layers is neglecterd a fourth order differential equation of motion is received. Inclusion of contraction and extension of the constraining layers results in a more accurate sixth order differential equation. Appropriate boundary conditions are derived. Laplace transforms are used extensively. Both the analytical solution and the numerical results are presented.

Streszczenie:
The reduction of noise and vibration is a major requirement for performance of any vibratory system. Passive damping technology using viscoelastic materials is classically used to control vibrations. Viscoelastic material among the damping materials is widely used to dissipate the structural vibration energy. Three-layer sandwich beams, made of two elastic outer layers and a viscoelastic layer sandwiched between them, are considered as damping structural elements. This paper presents the effect of thickness of constrained damping material on modal loss factor of vibrating structures. Measurements are performed on sandwich beam structure. In order to understand the effectiveness of the sandwich structures, the dynamics of beam with constrained viscoelastic layers are investigated. Comparisons of the experimental and the Numerical results confirm that the damping levels and the natural frequencies of damped structures are well corroborated.

Streszczenie:
Solutions have been obtained for the harmonic vibrations of five-layer plates by means of a finite element method. This method is an extension of a previously developed analysis for three-layer plates. The five-layer plates contain two constrained viscoelastic layers which provide the damping. The degenerate case when the thickness of the middle elastic layer becomes zero and the plate is reduced to a four-layer one has also been included in the solution procedure. Moreover, the method allows for the study of both torsional and transverse vibrations of five (or four)-layer beams treated as vibrating plates with a large aspect ratio. As in the case of three-layer plates, triangular finite elements are used to allow for a greater variety of shapes. In the analysis damping is introduced by replacing the real moduli of the viscoelastic material by complex equivalent moduli which account for the phase difference between strain and stress. The present method allows for the non-linear stress-strain behaviour of the viscoelastic layers, the effects of the rotatory inertia and the extension within the viscoelastic layers. The finite element computations have been verified by comparison with experimental results for four-layer and five-layer beams in transverse and torsional vibrations and a five-layer square plate in transverse vibration.

Streszczenie:
This paper highlights the importance of considering the piezoelectric constraining layer voltage (or electric field) limits when evaluating the effectiveness of an active constrained layer damping treatment in attenuating resonant vibration. It is seen that, when position feedback is used, intermediate viscoelastic layer stiffness values are always optimal, and maximum allowable control gains and possible vibration attenuation progressively decrease with increasing excitation force levels. On the other hand, with velocity feedback, the optimal viscoelastic layer stiffness is dependent on the excitation level. For low excitation force amplitudes, stiff viscoelastic layers are most effective, with large velocity feedback gains producing substantial vibration attenuation without exceeding piezoelectric layer voltage limits. However, for higher excitation force levels, stiff viscoelastic layers result in excess voltages even at very small velocity feedback gains, and are unable to provide any vibration attenuation. In such a case, intermediate viscoelastic layer stiffness values are preferable, and maximum velocity feedback gains and possible vibration attenuation progressively decrease with increasing excitation level, as in the case of position feedback. For both position and velocity feedback, when excitation forces are beyond a certain level the allowable control gains are so limited that no additional damping is obtained beyond that already available through the passive treatment.

Streszczenie:
Surface acoustic wave sensors have the advantage of fast response, low-cost, and wireless interfacing capability and they have been used in the medical analysis, material characterization, and other application fields that immerse the device under a liquid environment. The theoretical analysis of the single guided layer shear horizontal acoustic wave based on the perturbation theory has seen developments that span the past 20 years. However, multiple guided layer systems under a liquid environment have not been thoroughly analyzed by existing theoretical models. A dispersion equation previously derived from a system of three rigidly coupled elastic mass layers is extended and developed in this study with multiple guided layers to analyze how the liquid layer’s properties affect the device’s sensitivity. The combination of the multiple layers to optimize the sensitivity of an acoustic wave sensor is investigated in this study. The Maxwell model of viscoelasticity is applied to represent the liquid layer. A thorough analysis of the complex velocity due to the variations of the liquid layer’s properties and thickness is derived and discussed to optimize multilayer Surface acoustic wave (SAW) sensor design. Numerical simulation of the sensitivity with a liquid layer on top of two guided layers is investigated in this study as well. The parametric investigation was conducted by varying the thicknesses for the liquid layer and the guided layers. The effect of the liquid layer viscosity on the sensitivity of the design is also presented in this study. The two guided layer device can achieve higher sensitivity than the single guided layer counterpart in a liquid environment by optimizing the second guided layer thickness. This perturbation analysis is valuable for Love wave sensor optimization to detect the liquid biological samples and analytes.

Streszczenie:
Doutoramento em Engenharia Mecânica
Viscoelastic treatments are one of the most efficient treatments, as far as passive damping is concerned, particularly in the case of thin and light structures. In this type of treatment, part of the strain energy generated in the viscoelastic material is dissipated to the surroundings, in the form of heat. A layer of viscoelastic material is applied to a structure in an unconstrained or constrained configuration, the latter proving to be the most efficient arrangement. This is due to the fact that the relative movement of both the host and constraining layers cause the viscoelastic material to be subjected to a relatively high strain energy. There are studies, however, that claim that the partial application of the viscoelastic material is just as efficient, in terms of economic costs or any other form of treatment application costs. The application of patches of material in specific and selected areas of the structure, thus minimising the extension of damping material, results in an equally efficient treatment. Since the damping mechanism of a viscoelastic material is based on the dissipation of part of the strain energy, the efficiency of the partial treatment can be correlated to the modal strain energy of the structure. Even though the results obtained with this approach in various studies are considered very satisfactory, an optimisation procedure is deemed necessary. In order to obtain optimum solutions, however, time consuming numerical simulations are required. The optimisation process to use the minimum amount of viscoelastic material is based on an evolutionary geometry re-design and calculation of the modal damping, making this procedure computationally costly. To avert this disadvantage, this study uses adaptive layerwise finite elements and applies Genetic Algorithms in the optimisation process.

The effects of a composite overwrapped gun barrel with viscoelastic damping layers are investigated. Interlaminar stresses and constrained layer damping effects are described. The Modal Strain Energy method is developed for measuring the extent to which the barrel is damped. The equations of motion used in the finite element analysis are derived. The transient solution process is outlined. Decisions for selected parameters are discussed. The results of the finite element analyses are presented using the program written in FORTRAN. The static solution is solved with a constant internal pressure resulting in a calculated loss factor from the Modal Strain Energy Method. The transient solution is solved using the Newmark-Beta method and a variable internal pressure. The analyses conclude that strategically placed viscoelastic layers dissipate strain energy more effectively than a thick single viscoelastic layer. The optimal angle for maximizing the coefficient of mutual influence in a composite cylinder is not necessarily the optimal angle when viscoelastic layers are introduced between layers.

Microgels are solvent swollen, cross-linked polymer macromolecules of micro or nanoscale dimensions. In this work, microgels are used as versatile building blocks in layer-by-layer assemblies to form thin coatings. While conceptually simple materials, these microgel-based films actually possess extremely complex behavior as evidenced by two particular areas. First, microgel films have self-healing properties, allowing them to rapidly recover from damage in the presence of solvent. The healing step requires rearrangement of film components, demonstrating the dynamic and mobile nature of the films. Second, fibroblasts display complex behavior on microgel films arising from the properties of the coating. A chemical crosslinking treatment of the film affects the film network structure in a concentration-dependent manner. These network changes result in altered mechanical properties that are the primary controlling factor in determining cell behavior at the interface. These data suggest that fibroblasts are not solely controlled by the film elasticity, but rather by the viscoelasticity, and there is a viscoelastic range that results in maximal cell spreading.

Streszczenie:
AbstractA first integral approach, derived in an analogous fashion to Maxwell’s use of potential fields, is employed to investigate the flow characteristics, with a view to minimising friction, of shear-driven fluid motion between rigid surfaces in parallel alignment as a model for a lubricated joint, whether naturally occurring or engineered replacement. For a viscous bilayer arrangement comprised of immiscible liquids, it is shown how the flow and the shear stress along the separating interface is influenced by the mean thickness of the layers and the ratio of their respective viscosities. Considered in addition, is how the method can be extended for application to the more challenging problem of when one, or both, of the layers is a viscoelastic material.

Streszczenie:
Mechanisms associated with interaction of the wheel and the rail in the vertical and horizontal direction are investigated. The noise-generating characteristics and the calculation model of wheels are studied theoretically. An improved railway wheel added with viscoelastic constrained damping layers has been researched out theoretically and experimentally. Design equations and graphs are developed for the geometrical parameter of viscoelastic constrained damping layers used in wheels. Using existing theory, the procedures are developed for predicting the structure loss factor of structural composites with different numbers of constrained damping layers. The structure loss factor of wheels attached with symmetrical three constrained layers is optimally calculated using MATLAB. A number of experiments with pulse excitations in the laboratory are carried out from the number of constrained damping layers, the material of constrained layers, as well as the position added to the wheel. From the experiments, steel is chosen as the material of constrained layer, and rubber with high loss factor and wide temperature range is chosen as the material of elastic layer. Both materials are experimentally measured. The theoretical predictions of the noise reduction effect is compared with the experimental measurements. The results shown that the wheel noise is obviously reduced.

Streszczenie:
In this study, a simple theory for estimating the warpage of chip size packaging (CSP) during a manufacturing process is presented. A single-sided CSP which is composed of IC, a resin and a substrate is modeled for an analysis as a three-layered material. Especially, the resin and the substrate have different thermo-viscoelastic properties. When the layered body is perfectly bonded, its warpage is caused by the difference of the thermal expansion coefficient in each layer when temperature varies. The warpage of CSP for a various thicknesses of the IC and the substrate is investigated. Finally, the warpage calculated using the theory is compared with the result in experiment, and both results are well agreed with each other. Then, it is shown that the simple theoretical analysis is valid. After that, this program is extended to be able to analyze the warpage in a CoC (Chip on Chip), and the result of the analysis is then presented.

Streszczenie:
Abstract When a laminated sandwich beam consisting of alternating elastic and viscoelastic layers bends in the plane normal to its plane of lamination, the relatively compliant viscoelastic layers are sheared between the adjoining elastic layers and energy is dissipated. This mechanism, known as constrained-layer or shear damping, is a proven method for damping flexural vibration, but only in the plane normal to the plane of lamination. For vibration parallel to the plane of lamination, the elastic layers need not deflect together, and the viscoelastic layers are sheared when adjoining elastic layers undergo different deflections. This mechanism of damping is discussed herein. In this paper, we study the vibration of a symmetrically laminated five-layer sandwich beam in its plane of lamination. Taking the viscoelastic material to have frequency-independent hysteretic damping, we derive a boundary-value problem governing steady harmonic motion of the sandwich beam and then obtain its discretized counterpart. For the particular case of a beam with simply supported elastic layers, we obtain the resonant frequencies and loss factors of the composite beam, and study their dependence on geometric and material properties.

Abstract Dynamic transient responses of plates with free damping layers are studied in order to evaluate free layer damping treatment performances. The effects of forcing frequencies and temperatures on free-layer viscoelastic damping treatment of plates are investigated analytically. Young’s modulus ratio of structures to viscoelastic damping materials and the damping layer thickness effects on the damping ability are also explored.

Adipose tissue plays an important role in the load transfer between different tissue structures like skin and muscle. Though a plethora of papers can be found on properties of these surrounding tissue layers, only few papers addressed the properties of the adipose layer with its specific morphology. As a result, a thorough constitutive model describing the mechanical behavior of adipose tissue is lacking. This seems odd, because numerical models including the subcutaneous adipose tissue are needed in a wide field of applications such as skin device contact, needle insertion procedures, and understanding deep tissue injuries.

Abstract Recent work on corner singularities in viscoelastic flows has shown that, in contrast to the Newtonian case, sharp boundary layers occur near the wall. These boundary layers can be viewed as a special instance of a more general phenomenon, which also occurs in other high Weissenberg number flows. This lecture reviews the derivation of boundary layer equations and their application, in particular to corner flow.

Streszczenie:
Abstract A new class of structural damping treatments is introduced. This class is the Electro-Magnetic Damping Treatment (EMDT) which relies in its operation on a viscoelastic damping layer sandwiched between two magnetic layers. Interaction between the magnets generates magnetic forces that enhance the compressional damping mechanism of the viscoelastic layer. With proper tuning of the magnetic forces, in response to the structural vibration, undesirable resonances and catastrophic failures can be avoided. The fundamentals and the underlying phenomena associated with the EMDT are investigated theoretically and experimentally. A finite element model is developed to describe the interaction between the dynamics of flexible beams, the viscoelastic damping layer and the magnetic layers. The validity of the developed finite element model is checked experimentally using aluminum beams treated with EMDT patches. The beam/EMDT system is subjected to sinusoidal excitations and its multi-mode response is monitored when the magnetic layers are activated or not. Several control strategies are considered to activate the magnetic layers including simple PD controllers. The performance of the uncontrolled and controlled system is determined at various operating conditions. Comparisons with conventional Passive Constrained Layer Damping (PCLD) treatments emphasize the potential of the EMDT treatment as an effective means for controlling structural vibrations.

Streszczenie:
To make a prediction for seismic signal propagation, one needs to specify physical properties and subsurface ground structure of the site. This information is frequently unknown or estimated with significant uncertainty. This paper describes a methodology for probabilistic seismic ensemble prediction for vertically stratified soils and short ranges with no in situ site characterization. Instead of specifying viscoelastic site properties, the methodology operates with probability distribution functions of these properties taking into account analytical and empirical relationships among viscoelastic variables. This yields ensemble realizations of signal arrivals at specified locations where statistical properties of the signals can be estimated. Such ensemble predictions can be useful for preliminary site characterization, for military applications, and risk analysis for remote or inaccessible locations for which no data can be acquired. Comparison with experiments revealed that measured signals are not always within the predicted ranges of variability. Variance-based global sensitivity analysis has shown that the most significant parameters for signal amplitude predictions in the developed stochastic model are the uncertainty in the shear quality factor and the Poisson ratio above the water table depth.

The study reports on circumferential guided wave inspection potential and propagation in a tar coated pipe. A computer code based on a matrix technique was developed to calculate the circumferential guided wave dispersion curves and wave structures in a viscoelastic multi-layered pipe. Experiments utilizing the SwRI Magnetostrictive ILI inspection technique were conducted under different coating conditions. There was a favorable agreement with theory. This study provides an insight into attenuation effect, ways to improve propagation distance, and a baseline for further studies on wave scattering, defect classification and sizing.
