Innovation in platform industries, including mobile telecommunications, has a great impact on societies and economies; hence a migration from an existing platform to the subsequent one should be progressed under careful forecasting, weighed scenarios and strategies that encompass a broad view. This thesis analyzes why mobile network operators are struggling to move from the second generation (2G) and its derivatives to the third generation (3G) technologies and proposes migration strategies, which allow them to sustain their competitive advantage. First, a migration model is proposed as a reinforcing loop model composed of two dynamics, "Platform Migration" caused by a shortage of network capacity, and "Service Innovation" triggered by a decline in ARPU (Average Revenue Per User). Platform migration is an implementation process for new platform technologies and can be categorized into Revolution-type and Evolution-type. After these two schemes have been evaluated through case studies, Collaboration-type migration, an enhanced Evolution-type, is proposed for future, technically diversified situations. Service Innovation is a process for creating new profitable services to give further revenue growth. Empirical analysis clarifies that mental breakthrough management is a common approach in the mobile industry and proposes that a mixture of corporate, partner and market initiatives be adopted for diversified customer preference. This thesis then proposes the following strategies for future successful migration: first, mobile network operators should drive the migration cycle powerfully, concentrating on successive service innovation dynamics for their revenue growth and the next platform migration. Second, they should choose migration schemes carefully according to their level of technology leadership, value chain leadership and investment capability. Finally, service platform should be considered for realization of innovative services with Partnership Dynamics.

In this context, this work takes a step towards the 6G vision by proposing a next generation communication platform, which aims to extend the rigid coverage area of fixed deployment networks by considering virtual mobile small cells (MSC) that are created on demand. Relying on emerging computing paradigms such as NFV (Network Function Virtualization) and SDN (Software Defined Networking), these cells can harness radio and networking capability locally reducing protocol signalling latency and overhead. These MSCs constitute an intelligent pool of networking resources that can collaborate to form a wireless network of MSCs providing a communication platform for localized, ubiquitous and reliable connectivity. The technology enablers for implementing the MSC concept are also addressed in terms of virtualization, lightweight wireless security, and energy efficient RF. The benefits of the MSC architecture towards reliable and efficient cell-offloading are demonstrated as a use-case.

With the emerging of online social networks along with the worldwide diffusion of smartphones, context awareness has become an essential concept in the field of mobile computing. Recent efforts and relevant research regarding mobile social networks aim at connecting people in smart environments considering not only their social behavior but also their context. In this perspective, this work presents a novel Mobile Social Network (MSN) model called Spontaneous Social Network (SSN). The main scientific contribution of the SSN model is the possibility of creating social communities based on a combination of multiple contexts, including location, profile and data obtained from external online social networks. In the literature, we found several works that lack on the community grouping approach, on the aspect that they are either limited to a specific location, or do not fully support virtual social interactions. We develop a mobile application called Dino, to provide a glimpse of what an SSN based application would be. To evaluate our model we perform two experiments using the developed mobile client. First, we present hypothetical scenarios based on possible real-world SSN applications to measure users’ perceived sense of community. The scenarios described are (1) music concert (2) sport event (3) shopping mall (4) conference or workshop (5) school or university. Second, we ask users to consider their real interests to assess our formed groups regarding their relevance and measure precision and recall of the groups’ suggestions. We compute average values of 0.72 and 0.83 for precision and recall, respectively. The experiments’ results to assess the proposed scenarios ascertain average values of agreement of 84% for sense of community, 80% for sense of belonging, 90% for social usefulness, 92% for member loyalty, and 81% for communities’ ephemerality. Therefore, our evaluation depict that dynamic virtual communities formed by a SSN model based application would beneficially improve a social-aware virtual environment.

It has been blighted by extremes to the extent that in 2008 the Zimbabwe economy had one of the highest hyperinflation rate in the world. Pettinger sums up the hyperinflation journey of Zimbabwe as having begun in the 1990s shortly after the disastrous land reform. This is where private farms were grabbed from landowners and re-allocated to mostly peasant farmers who had no technical know-how in farming. It was also a time when the country was involved in an unbudgeted and unsolicited second Congo civil war necessitating that the Government increase salaries to cater for soldiers and other officials assigned to the Congo. Earlier on the government had buckled under pressure from former war liberators (war veterans) and paid out unbudgeted bonuses.

Pełny tekst źródłaDespite the substantial increase in the percentage of the globe surface covered by mobile communications, there are issues that have hampered the implementation and development of cellular networks in regions where the market and economic power are still under development. Many of these issues are of economic and financial nature. It is curiously a contradictory fact, since mobile communications on several occasions proved to be a great ally for the growth and economic development of this type of regions. Therefore, in situations such as these, where the development or installation of cellular networks is blocked or conditioned by economic and financial factors, the adoption of infrastructure or service sharing methods can facilitate the implementation and expansion of cellular networks in these regions. The work developed in this dissertation seeks to identify and study the most common methods of cellular network sharing. Through the use of a numerical tool, the effects and techno-economic benefits that each sharing method will bring to the operators interested in entering markets with these characteristics will be analyzed.

This study is aimed at exploring the key factors of successful management for physical and virtual network forms of mobile communication industry and comparing their differences. First of all, through the collection of secondary data, the factors influencing the business strategy of mobile communication industry are extracted from the collected literature; and in-depth interview of case studies as the basis for revising key success factors for this study, Mobile Network Operator, MNO and Mobile Virtual Network Operator, MVNO are designed to be reference indicators of key success factors. According to their nature, reference indicators are categorized to six major dimensions: 1. market opportunities, 2. policy act, 3. marketing channel, 4. financial management, 5. enterprise integration, 6. product value. Take business management cadres as research subject to conduct questionnaires and then adopt GM(0,N) model for weight analysis. As the result shown, among key success factors of MNO, “getting up with the latest status of competitors” is most valued, followed by “prompt reaction to competitors’ strategic activities”, thirdly “resources integration capabilities”, fourthly “clarity of government policies”, fifthly “grasping the development of technology” and the sixth is “timing of the launch of service products” and “fair and rational regulatory orders.” As for key success factors of MVNO, “the integrity of regulatory orders” is most valued, followed by “applicability of cross-industry regulations”, thirdly “clarity of government policies”, fourthly “launching the service products leading competitors”, fifthly “prompt reaction to competitors’ strategic activities” and the sixth is “grasping the change of customers need.” To explore the differences of key success factors between MNO and MVNO, it is mainly based on the different business modes between them. What MVNO management needs is flexibility, while MNO management requires economies of scale. Customer resources they pursued are not identical. Finally, this study also analyzes the relationship between success factors in the mobile communication industry and expects that the result will help the mobile communication operators to conduct more effective integration and planning, expand the management performance of business entity and improve operational efficiency to achieve the purpose of sustainable operation.

Abstract In response to the global trend towards telecommunications liberalization, Taiwan’s competent authority for telecommunications policies recently implemented “Speed up Hi-quality Broadband Network Infrastructure” and “Quality Service is the Core of Competition”. The island’s telecommunications authority not only announced the 5 bidding winners for 3G (Third Generation) licenses in February 2002, but also planned to open up the service to MVNOs (Mobile Virtual Network Operators) in December 2003. How the strategies to open the market to MVNOs have influenced telecommunications marketing is of great importance for practical applications and academic research. We assesses the key factors in leading to a win-win situation for both MVNOs and MNOs (Mobile Network Operators) in Taiwan by analyzing the latest trends in MVNOs’ development. This study investigates the trends followed by MVNOs in the last three years and analyzes the strategies that can contribute to the success of Taiwan’s telecommunications industry and marketing. We apply the method and concept of PATTERN (Planning Assistance Through Technical Evaluation of Relevance Number) to establish a relevant system for researching the key successful factors of the strategies in reaching a win-win situation both MVNOs and MNO in Taiwan. We also use the fuzzy MCDM (Multi-Criteria Decision Making) method for analyzing the different preferences of decision groups in the criteria weights and rank the alternatives in a fuzzy environment to provide a strategy scheme. These results can assist telecommunications operators, 3G license owners, potential MVNOs, and equipment manufacturers when working out business plans.

A Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) is a telecommunications operator who does not own a radio frequency license to operate a mobile telecommunication network but acting like a Mobile Network Operator (MNO). MVNO operators do not own infrastructures such as base stations or a network backbone. Instead, they lease mobile network resources or wholesale airtime minutes from an MNO partner and then resell the mobile services to consumers using their own branding and marketing channels. MVNOs have lower startup costs and can provide consumers more service varieties. This research was based on the Technology Acceptance Model. The objective was to find out how Network Quality, Relative Advantages, Service Convenience, Reference Groups, and Service Price influence consumers’ adaptation behaviors of the MVNO service. This research used the questionnaire survey method and targeted at consumers who have heard about or used the MVNO services. There were a total of 285 valid surveys received. The Descriptive Statistics, Reliability Analysis, Correlation Analysis, Collinearity and Regression Analysis were used to analyze consumers’ adaptation of the MVNO service. The results showed that Network Quality, Relative Advantages, Service Convenience, and Reference Groups all have a strong positive influence on the Perceived Usefulness and Perceived Ease of Use of the MVNO service. In addition, the Perceived Usefulness and Perceived Ease of Use both have a strong positive influence on the consumer attitudes and behaviors; consumer attitudes have a positive influence on their behaviors; Service Price has a strong influence on the consumer attitudes, but it is independent from the consumer behaviors.

The Mobile Ad Hoc Network (MANET) is an infrastructureless mobile wireless network. The mobile hosts in the MANET communicate each other with a proposed routing algorithm. The architecture of the communication between the MANET and Internet is seldom discussed in the recent. This thesis proposed a system architecture to manage the communications between the MANET and Internet. The Mobile IP is designed to access the mobile hosts in the MANET. We constructed the virtual backbone to manage the MANET by the clustering. The virtual backbone reduces the cost of the routing table and control messages. The simulation programs show that our proposal outperforms the CGSR, AODV, and DSDV in the cost of the routing table, the stability of the virtual backbone, and the transmission performance.

Nowadays, hotspots are being largely deployed by WISPs (Wireless Internet Service Providers) as a ubiquitous means of offering Internet access to their customers. However, sparse of spectrum and costly infrastructure, it requires more flexible bandwidth management than before. In order to alleviate the burden of cost incurred by service providers, this thesis introduces a simple concept of bandwidth sharing in a wireless environment. As in the case of MVNO, wireless networks will also develop “virtual operator” to run their business. The facility band operator can unite all of its virtual operators to share bandwidth by different market segment. It proposes a dynamic programming algorithm to obtain the optimal solution by forecasting bandwidth demand in advance. The research will simulate the three virtual operators’ behavior in an IEEE 802.11g environment. These simulations are conducted in different market segments and analyze the performance of the bandwidth sharing algorithm. The results show that the bandwidth sharing model for virtual network operators can not only provide higher bandwidth utilization and QoS but also earn more profit for all virtual operators. In addition, the model can help operators to alleviate the unexpected increase in bandwidth demand. As a conclusion, the model provides an optimal bandwidth sharing algorithm and the rental management procedure for operators in the future wireless environment.

This paper considers the problem of deploying a mobile sensor network in an unknown environment. A mobile sensor network is a distributed collection of nodes, each of which has sensing, computation, communication and locomotion capabilities. Previous work on mobile sensor deployment is based on a round by round process, where sensors move iteratively until the maximum coverage is reached. Although these solutions can deploy mobile sensors in a distributed way, the mobile sensors may move in a zig-zag way and waste a lot of energy compared to moving directly to the final location. We propose a clustered virtual force algorithm (CVFA) as an energy efficiency deployment strategy to enhance the coverage after an initial random placement of sensors. The virtual forces are constructed such that each node is attracted or repelled by other nodes, thereby forcing the network to spread itself throughout the environment. The approach is both distributed and scalable. The major concept of CVFA is to decrease unnecessary excessive movements through efficient communications. Because of the movement is much more expensive than communication and computation in terms of energy. In CVFA, more global information of k-hop neighbors can be acquired by the inter-cluster communications. Hence, mobile sensors can calculate their target locations, move logically, and update new logical locations through inter-cluster communications. Actual movement only occurs when sensors determine their final locations. Simulation results show that CVFA can significantly reduce the energy consumption compared to previous work, while maintaining similar coverage.

Pełny tekst źródłaUniversal Service Obligations (USOs) have been used, for over a decade, as a regulatory mechanism to bridge the digital divide in South Africa. For USOs to be effective and efficient in bridging the digital divide, it requires close coordination between various impacted and interested stakeholders, such as mobile network operators (MNOs), the ICT regulatory authority (the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa), and the Universal Service and Access Agency of South Africa in order to extend the number of beneficiaries of the USOs. Furthermore, this requires stakeholders to understand the full impact, as well as the costs and benefits (financial and non financial) before imposing the USOs. The evidence from this research confirms that there was no monitoring and evaluation of USOs for MNOs during their implementation. More importantly, the Regulatory Impact Assessment (as a regulatory tool) was never used by ICASA in respect of the USOs initiative. This led to the failure of the initiative in achieving most of its objectives. Such failure can be attributed to lack of understanding by ICASA of the general impact of imposing the USOs upon MNOs, given that no impact assessment was done before such imposition. Recommendations arising from the research include the need for a shared vision on the USOs initiative, the need for clearly identified and defined roles for all stakeholders with an interest in the initiative, the need for a properly analysed and know ICT access gap, the need to balance the use of market and non market mechanisms in respect of USOs, the to ensure a proper funding mechanisms for USOs, and the need to identify effective regulatory governance in respect of USOs.

In the digital convergence era, telecommunication technology and new application services are changing steadily. It also changes the way telecommunication network constructed and dominant profit model from voice to 4G mobile internet service. The next event is the chance and challenge that the coming 5G network will bring. This thesis makes an analysis of the 5G network on the business model of Taiwan mobile operators. In between these analyses, by the ambition matrix, it shows that the investment to build a 5G network and create new service market should be designed and considered at the same time. By the 10 types of innovation, from the operators’ point of view, the telecommunication services covered all types of innovation including technology, network implementation, services, and channels. While in the initial stage of constructing 5G network, the most important innovation area are profit model and network to connect with other partners to create values. By the strategy profile analysis methodology and in response to the IoT, big data market demand, to approach new service market, it is recommended to adopt the Partner Service Provider model, cross different industry sectors collaboration and build a 5G network ecosystem. Facing the different new service models and different competitor profiles, the urgent task for the telecommunication operators is transformation、cross industry sectors collaboration、establishing close partner relationship and to create new service market and new profit model in the future 5G network.

Licensed assisted access (LAA) is the new technology of radio access network (RAN) in 3rd generation partnership project (3GPP) release 13. In addition to accessing licensed band, LAA can also access unlicensed band to increase higher throughput through carrier aggregation. In fact, the demand for spectrum will obviously increase in the future because of 5th generation mobile networks (5G) system such as virtual reality (VR) or the internet of things (IoT). Besides, the phenomenon where people stay in-doors about 80% of the day is another reason. Therefore, combining licensed band and unlicensed band is one of the important ways to satisfy the demand in indoor environ-ment. If every mobile network operator (MNO) wants to fast and widely build high per-formance 5G RAN in indoor, the space will be wasted for same purposes and the oper-ator expense will be expensive. Thus, the concept of micro operator (μO) is proposed. μO will negotiate with the manager of area and build RAN. Then, MNOs can provide services to its subscribers through renting RAN from μO. After that, not only MNOs can reduce its capital expenditure (CAPEX) and operator expense (OPEX) but also μO can get profit from this market. In fact, there is some research about coordination of RAN and spectrum among multiple MNOs by coordinator or μO in indoor environment. However, whether μO will deal with MNOs for renting RAN and how μO coordinate unlicensed band among multiple MNOs have not been discussed. How μO coordinate LAA RAN and spectrum including licensed band unlicensed band among multiple MNOs to provide different quality of service (QoS) for MNOs’ subscribers will be discussed. This research will focus on the incentives and conditions of transaction between MNO and μO and how μO effectively uses unlicensed band. The problem is as following: I. What are the incentives and conditions in which one MNO rents LAA from μO? The challenges lie in the analysis of revenue, cost, permission fee, etc. of LAA for MNO and μO according to the number of subscribers and service scenario. II. How does μO coordinate LAA and unlicensed band between two MNOs? The challenges lie in the rules of allocation on unlicensed band to increase efficiency and fairness. This thesis discusses whether MNO will build LAA network itself or rent LAA net-work from μO according to number of MNO’s subscribers and quantity of spectrum which MNO has. Moreover, to build micro operator opportunity analysis (MOOpA), cost of LAA network, fee of different QoS, heterogeneous spectrum allocation, etc. are considered by paper survey. MOOpA includes MNO transaction module, μO transaction module, media access control of LAA simulator (LAA simulator), etc. to solve the ques-tions in this thesis. In the aspect of cost, CAPEX and OPEX of building one small cell whose lifetime is 10-year are considered. In the aspect of MNO’s revenue, subscribers are divided into two types of QoS by 3GPP corresponding to different fee: Guaranteed bit rate (GBR) and Non-GBR. This thesis follows the rules in 3GPP and implement het-erogeneous spectrum allocation module. In this module, licensed band will be firstly allocated to GBR subscribers because GBR subscribers should be guaranteed with strict Qos. On the other hands, unlicensed band will be firstly allocated to Non-GBR sub-scribers although Non-GBR appropriately use both licensed and unlicensed band, as Non-GBR subscribers only should be guaranteed with loose Qos. To guarantee Qos of every subscriber including guaranteed maximum delay and minimum throughput, pro-portional fair scheduler module, defined by Basukala (2007), is used in LAA simulator to prevent subscribers from “starvation”. Finally, this research uses LAA simulator to evaluate MNO’s revenue in the scenarios of different QoS demands with limited spec-trum MNO having according to quantity of spectrum, number of subscribers, Qos types, fee, cost, etc. Furthermore, we discuss whether μO will deal with MNOs and how much renting RAN is. To coordinate unlicensed band between two MNOs, priority-oriented unlicensed band allocation algorithm module (POUBA) is the new design in the LAA simulator to allocate unlicensed band to MNOs. By the feature of that spectrum can be split equally to N resource blocks (RB), RBs are allocated to MNOs one by one according to the value of MNO’s priority. The value of MNO’s priority has two features as followed: (1) To avoid having idle spectrum, the more remained licensed band, the value of that li-censed band minus the part GBR subscribers use is, the less the value of MNO’s priority is. (2) The more RBs MNO has got, the less the value of MNO’s priority is. Compared with method of equalization where every MNO gets equal quantity of RBs, POUBA can satisfy greater number of Non-GBR subscribers in the scenarios where supply can or cannot meet demand. Eventually, Micro operator coordination of licensed assisted access system is im-plemented in this thesis. The system includes POUBA, graphical user interface (GUI) web of allocation management, database of management, interface ready for setting throughput command on unlicensed band in Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) LAA small cell, etc. Proof of concept of for the feasibility of micro operator co-ordination of licensed assisted access in indoor environment is the goal.

When knowledge and digital economy have been coming in the twenty-first century, most enterprises protect the transmission of internal information using virtual private networks. However, transactions through wireless transmission anytime and anywhere have been paid much attention by enterprises. In this thesis, we focus on how to design secure and efficient schemes suitable for mobile virtual private networks subject to many restrictions of functions in mobile environments. Traditional digital signature schemes often consider single signature. Nevertheless, we must think about the relationship between an individual and groups in the real electronic commerce. Consequently, this study integrates the elliptic curve cryptosystems (ECC), group-oriented signature, self-certified public key cryptosystems and group-oriented authenticated encryption scheme so that the transmission of packets in mobile virtual private networks can be more secure. Also, we can develop further a secure environment of mobile group-oriented electronic commerce based on our proposed security schemes. Based on ECC, the proposed security schemes can possess fewer bits achieving the same security degree as other public key cryptosystems, and the key space needed can be also greatly reduced. Thus, ECC is very fit for applying in resource-limited mobile virtual private networks. As to the computing complexity and communication cost, they are also substantially decreased. Moreover, the proposed group-oriented authenticated encryption scheme can transform authenticated encryption message into a general digital signature with message recovery without requiring extra computing cost. Hence, in this thesis our proposed schemes are quite suitable for mobile virtual private networks in practical applications.
