Streszczenie:
The chapter addresses the question in how far herem texts have inspired and shaped war and violent behaviour in the real world. It briefly reviews passages in Ambrose and Augustine that arguably constitute patristic antecedents to later violent readings. This review is followed by a detailed treatment of the reception of herem texts during the medieval crusades, which draws on crusading chronicles, songs, poems, epics, and sermons; then by briefer sections on the medieval inquisition, the Spanish conquest of the New World, the ‘Christian holy war’ in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century authors, and colonial wars in North America. The chapter demonstrates that the OT generally and herem texts specifically provided narratives, categories, and labels by which Christians understood themselves and their ‘enemies’. Herem texts were sometimes used to justify massacres ex post facto; at the same time, it cannot be demonstrated that they shaped the planning or execution of mass slaughters.

Streszczenie:
This chapter explores the links commonly made between psychiatric disorder and individual violence. To this end it: first, looks at the evidence concerning the relationship between psychiatric disorder and violent behaviour, examining a range of empirical data, including the issue of whether it is possible to predict violence in those with mental illness; second, it draws on a range of ideas to explore how we can best understand the continuing, often exaggerated, assumptions of a close link between the two; and third and finally, it considers the implications of both the empirical data and the explanatory ideas for mental health policy.

Streszczenie:
This chapter discusses the politics, incidence, assessment, and management of challenging, hostile, and violent behaviour from the perspective of practising community outreach with people with more severe and enduring mental health problems. As a way of establishing risk factors, data are presented on incidence of hostility in both community and inpatient settings along with the research evidence on associations between severe mental illnesses, such as psychosis, substance misuse, and violence. Methods and frameworks for risk assessment are presented and critiqued. Risk management techniques with individuals are demonstrated and illustrated through case studies. Community team training, policies, procedures, support, and supervision are presented as examples of best practice.
