Streszczenie:
Increasingly stringent emissions and fuel economy standards have long remained a source of challenges for research in automobile engine technology development towards the more thermally efficient and less polluting engine. Spark ignition (SI) engines have lower part-load efficiency when compared with the diesel engines. The greatest opportunity for improving SI engine efficiency is by way of higher compression ratio, variable valve timing, low friction, reducing throttling losses, boosting, and down-sizing. Variable compression ratio (VCR) technology has long been recognized as a method for improving the fuel economy of SI engines. In order to vary the compression ratio, some method of varying the geometric compression ratio through changing the clearance volume is required. There are several ways of doing this; various patents have been filed and designs presented, including modification of the compression ratio by moving the cylinder head, variation of combustion chamber volume using a secondary piston or valve, variation of piston deck height, modification of connecting rod geometry, moving the crankpin within the crankshaft, and moving the crankshaft axis. The potential of these technologies needs to be evaluated by a trade-off between cost and consumption benefit. This paper reviews the geometric approaches and solutions used to achieve VCR, considers the results of prior research, and forecasts what benefits, if any, a VCR would bring to present engine design.

Type synthesis of two-degrees-of-freedom (DOF) planar mechanisms has been carried out using graph theory to determine the possible kinematic structures of variable compression ratio (VCR) engine mechanisms with two to three independent loops, and has resulted in the structures of 87 mechanisms satisfying search specification. By applying evaluation criteria to the enumerated mechanisms, the kinematic structures of three mechanisms are selected as suitable VCR engine mechanisms and verified by analysis results. In this research, VCR engine mechanisms with revolute joints and only one prismatic joint are enumerated, and the basic method to determine the VCR engine mechanisms with higher pairs is discussed. The procedure used in this research can be utilized to determine the kinematic structures of desired mechanisms and the results can be used as an atlas of two-DOF adjustable slider-crank mechanisms.

Abstract Petroleum is non-renewable supply of energy and also the diminution of natural fuel resources, leads to explore for various fuels for cars. The critical search for various fuels for compression ignition engines has been paying interest on fuels obtained from hydrogen and linseed oil plays a significant role in alternate fuel for C.I Engines. The aim of this research effort is to appraise the property of Linseed oil and Hydrogen as dual blend recital on a variable Compression ratio diesel engine. This really provides the discharge individualism of linseed oil amalgamated with gas and its blends with diesel and are taken up for study. Vertical, 4-stroke, water cooled VCR engine with Linseed oil blends for a extensive series of engine load conditions such as Diesel, B10, B20, B40 along with 5lpm, 10lpm and 15lpm of hydrogen were performed. The brake thermal competence of B20 is found nearly closer to diesel fuel with minimum vibrations and less emissions of CO, hydro carbons HC and slight increase in NOx when compared to fossil fuels. During the experiments, vibrations, performance uniqueness of the test engine was analysed and compared with the precise VCR diesel vibrations, fuel performance. The results obtained by using Python module and the best suited code is derived and found that the combined increase of compression ratio and injecting timing increases the brake thermal efficiency and reduces specific fuel consumption. This module helps and reduces each load variations and performances compared tp experimental. Diesel (25%) saved, will greatly meet the demand of fuel in automobiles.

Streszczenie:
In the in-line four-cylinder engine, it is well known that the shaking force is due to the vertical second harmonic acceleration components of the pistons. This paper proposes a kinematic conceptual design method to determine the kinematic structure of a feasible in-line four-cylinder variable compression ratio (VCR) engine and its dimensions that would yield a lower vertical second harmonic acceleration at joints. Through type and dimensional synthesis, candidate VCR engine mechanisms are chosen and their dimensions satisfying design specifications are determined. Based on the analysis of the vertical second harmonic acceleration components at the joints, a feasible mechanism for an in-line four-cylinder VCR engine is selected. Then, the method finds the dimensions that yield a nearly minimized sum of the vertical second harmonic acceleration at each joint by adjusting the link lengths within specified tolerances. For validation, the result is compared with that of a constrained optimization using MATLAB. The proposed method would be useful at the conceptual design stage of multi-link multi-cylinder VCR and variable-stroke engine mechanisms where the second harmonic acceleration is an important design factor in the automotive industrial applications.

Abstract The world is facing two serious problems: energy crises and pollution. The daily increase in industrialization and the number of automobiles is the reason for these two problems. This work focus on to analyse the performance characteristics and emission parameters of the diesel engine for the blend of calophyllum inophyllum (Honne oil) Biodiesel blend (B10, B20 and B30) and Also find out how they affect the performance of the I.C Engine. While testing, the compression ratio of the engine was in the range of 15 to 18. Then speed of the engine is constant (1500 rpm). In conventional diesel engines and exhaust gases such as carbon monoxide (CO), oxides of nitrogen (Nox), hydrocarbons (HC) has been reduced. Considering that, by using this hybrid system, the thermal performance and the emission system must be investigated.

Variable compression ratio (VCR) technology has long been recognized as a method for improving the engine performance, efficiency, and fuel economy of automobiles, with reduced emissions. In this paper, a novel hydraulic continuous VCR system based on the principle of an adjustable hydraulic volume is introduced. The continuous variable compression ratio of the VCR system is realized by the hydraulic system controlling the rotation of the eccentric pin to change the positions of the top dead center (TDC) and the bottom dead center (BDC). The construction of the mathematical model and simulation model of the VCR system is also presented in this paper. The piston motion characteristics, flow characteristics, and pressure characteristics of the hydraulic system of the VCR system at different engine speeds and adjustment quantities are studied by simulation in this paper. The simulation results show that the VCR system has a fast response and good dynamic characteristics, and can achieve continuous adjustment of the compression ratio.

Streszczenie:
Facing the future, whether working alone or with electric motors, a new type of variable compression ratio (VCR) engine that can achieve a high thermal efficiency under heavy load conditions is necessary. Hence, we propose a dual shaft control variable compression ratio (DSC-VCR) engine based on a gear-driven eccentric sleeve. With the improved position of gears, DSC-VCR allows for double larger gears to share the load, and the engine can operate with a larger eccentric size and a narrower adjustment range compared to other similar mechanisms. This helps to reduce the difficulty of chamber shape design, avoid collisions between valves and piston, and above all, makes the engine operate with a larger overexpansion ratio (OER, the ratio of expansion stroke and compression stroke) under all conditions to improve engine efficiency. Based on a 1.5 T four-cylinder engine, the OER can be increased to over 1.16 with the eccentric size of 6.5 mm. According to the theoretical thermal efficiency calculation while considering turbocharging, the per millimeter increase of eccentric size improves the theoretical efficiency by 0.0025–0.006. The predictive simulation presented that the reduction of residual gas helps to increase the compression ratio (CR) from 9.5 to 10.1 under a full load condition. Larger OERs and CRs help to reduce brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) by 6%–8%. In the case of a 75% load, about 3.51% of efficiency increase was realized. All of these prove that DSC-VCR is a high-efficiency potential mechanism for the future.

Increasingly stringent emission and fuel economy standards brings opportunities and research in automobile engine technology development to make it more efficient and less polluting. There are various performance improvement strategies adopted by different researchers in order to get maximum power from the minimum quantity of fuel alongside substantial reduction in exhaust gas emission. The techniques such as CRDI (Common Rail Direct Injection), VVT (Variable valve timing) and such more are commercially viable and successfully incorporated in vehicles. Along the similar track, this paper highlights the importance of variable compression ratio diesel engine, method of achieving the variable compression ratio (VCR) as per load and speed conditions. Variable compression ratio (VCR) technology is one of the method for improving the automobile engine performance, efficiency, fuel economy with reduced emission for range of fuels. The basis of the VCR engine is to operate at different compression ratio, by altering the combustion chamber volume, as per need of most suitable operating conditions. Apart from this, the fuel injection location needs to be varied as per load and speed conditions. The synchronization of both VCR and variable fuel injector location (VFIL) becomes important. Knowing this fact, the study for the diesel Comet engine (3.7 kW@2100 RPM) is undertaken for variable clearance volume accompanied with VIPL. The work consists of design and development of mechanism consisting of auxiliary cylinder and auxiliary piston which will operate in and out of combustion chamber as per load and speed conditions. The detailed drawings and complete experimentation will be carried out to judge the improvement of performance of diesel engine with modification of variable clearance volume concept. The performance parameters consist of brake power, brake thermal efficiency and brake specific fuel consumption under various load conditions.

Streszczenie:
A High percentage of fuel consumption worldwide is in internal combustion engines which has led environmental organizations and authorities to put further pressure on the engine industries to reduce CO2 emissions and enhance engine efficiency. However, historically, the effect of the compression ratio on increasing thermal efficiency of the engine is well known, hence; numerous technical solutions have been proposed to implement a variable compression ratio concept. A new first-class engineering solution to use a hydraulic piston was initially patented by BICERA (British Internal Combustion Engine Research Association) , then improved by Continental and Daimler Benz. A Hydraulic variable compression ratio piston is a hydraulically actuated piston that provides a practical method of obtaining a variable compression ratio piston. In this literature, a hydraulic variable compression ratio piston for a Volvo D13 diesel engine was designed, analyzed, modeled and discussed. This analysis was accomplished by first performing kinematic and dynamic analyses for the piston motion and acceleration based on the crank-slider mechanism. Following this the oil flow characteristics were defined in every mechanical element transferring the oil in its journey from the engine pump to the piston. Moreover, two different designs were proposed in an attempt to predict the compression ratio by modeling the hydraulic, dynamic and engine execution simultaneously. Additionally, stress on the piston was analyzed using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to assure piston sustainment and rigidity against the harsh combustion chamber environment. In conclusion, the best design was successfully selected and finalized to reach a wide compression ratio range under a boosted inlet pressure based on the selected design, dimensions, check valves and relief valves.

In this thesis was used various methods for testing. Namely Engle-Granger test of cointegration, the correlation analysis, Granger causality test and VAR-GARCH model for testing volatility spilloves between markets. Empirical results show that effect of commodity to shares is different for each group of commodities. The most evident effect appears at the impact of industrial and precious metals on mining companies and the effect of oil prices on the shares of the oil companies. In contrast, the prices of gas and agricultural commodities did not influence the prices of those commodities shares significantly.

The present paper studies the relationship among feed prices, producer prices and consumer prices of meat: beef, pork, poultry and lamb. The literature indicates that there are many factors which affect agricultural commodity prices but the feed prices are the main. This is why feed has a principal role in the production of meat and will affect producer and consumer prices. The data consists of 279 monthly observations extending from January 1990 to January 2013. Using Johansen cointegration tests, Granger causality tests and impulse response functions, the empirical findings confirm that feed prices, consumer prices and producer prices are interdependent.

Streszczenie:
Two types of variable compression ratio engine are considered: i) a continuously variable compression ratio (VCR) device that optimises engine efficiency at all loads, and ii) a VCR device that allows the engine to operate at one of two discrete compression ratios. The simulated engine configuration uses late intake valve closing (LIVC). A maximum geometric compression ratio (GCR) of 17:1 is adopted in the simulations resulting in a constant effective compression ratio of 10.2:1 in all configurations. Reduction from full load is achieved in the simulation with LIVC until the maximum GCR is reached after which lower loads are achieved through throttling. In the two-position VCR engine simulation, the full load range is achieved through throttling in combination with LIVC. At part load, in combination with LIVC, the VCR devices increase the geometric compression ratio to return the effective compression ratio to that for full load in each case. Fuel consumption for the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) is assessed via numerical simulation for a representative vehicle. The simulations indicate that the increase in net fuel consumption over a driving cycle is effectively no different for the two-position VCR engine relative to a continuously variable CR and this justifies further research into two-position VCR technology. Net fuel consumption can also be improved by the use of a limited acceleration that maintains the engine in the reduced compression stroke configuration. An acceleration rate with a driver feedback mechanism is proposed which, in combination with a two-position VCR engine, shows potential for significant reduction in fuel consumption of greater than 15% relative to the full compression, fixed CR configuration for the NEDC.

Streszczenie:
Improvement in the thermal efficiency of automobile engines is being demanded as a means to reducing carbon dioxide emissions, which are considered to be the main cause of global warming. Improving thermal efficiency by means of higher compression ratios is known. But, in the case of gasoline engines, there is a limit for high compression ratios caused by knocking under high load conditions. Therefore, various variable compression ratio (VCR) mechanisms have been devised. However, in previous attempts, structural issues have arisen, whereby structural weight has increased, thereby necessitating excessive power at the time of operation. Previous attempts have also necessitated the makeup of an exclusive engine design, which therefore has not been practically utilized. In this study, a double piston method was devised. This mechanism enables the remodeling of a VCR engine through the replacement of only the piston system without changing the dimensions of the engine. In addition, this mechanism operates by piston inertial force. Therefore, it does not need excessive power and enables a lightweight, power-saving engine. In this paper, the basic characteristics of the prototype VCR engine are described based on the experimental results obtained in tests conducted with the engine.

<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">This study introduces the working principle of the two-stage variable compression ratio system, the layout and method of the VCR hydraulic system test. Based on the research and analysis of VCR hydraulic system test, the results shows the average pressure, degree of pressure fluctuation of the VCR conrod supply oil and the temperature of conrod journal are all strongly and positively related to engine speed. The maximum oil pressure fluctuation amplitude at VCR conrod bearing appears at 5500r/min. The temperature at VCR conrod bearing is mainly dominated by the friction between bearing and crankshaft, and its maximum value appears at 6000r/min; Meanwhile, the main contribution of engine load to the temperature is to increase temperature of the whole circle of conrod journal, and also reducing temperature difference of the whole circle. In addition, the state change of VCR hydraulic system under different conditions can reflect the state of engine compression ratio. The results of overall test show that oil pressure fluctuation of the VCR hydraulic system is in normal range, the system has good function and can meet the oil demand of each sub-component under steady and dynamic conditions.</div></div>

Streszczenie:
Variable valve timing (VVT) and variable compression ratio (VCR) are two technologies to obtain fuel economy benefit. On the other hand, there is a tradeoff among fuel economy, engine performance and emission levels. Advantages of two technologies vary a lot on different engine operating regions. Recently some experiments are conducted on a Port Fuel Injection (PFI) engine in a city drive cycle to investigate the fuel economy impact from VVT, VCR and the technology integration. The testing results show clearly that the synergy of two technologies has further improved the fuel economy, while suitable operating regions need to be determined where the maximal benefit can be achieved. A typical 1.8L four-cylinder gasoline engine is used for experiments using VVT and VCR technologies for fuel economy improvement. The objective is to create a synergy scheme for the optimal fuel economy performance. The supercharged testing engine with VVT and VCR can implement similar performance to that of a larger replacement engine. The fuel economy optimization problem is simply converted into searching for the lowest engine power output region with respect to the same fuel economy improvement level. These optimal points are useful to determine potential best fuel economy operating regions whether VVT and VCR should be implemented individually or combined together.

Streszczenie:
It is desired to optimize a spark ignition PFI (port fuel injected) engine for various regimes within the operating ranges of a vehicle. The goal of this work is to identify the set of technologies that complement each other and offer the optimum performance and fuel economy. For an ideal powertrain system, the engine should be optimized for best fuel economy during the typical drive cycles and best performance during high load acceleration. A typical PFI 1.8L four-cylinder engine is baselined at cycle representative speed/load points. The engine is supercharged and intercooled to later quantify the efficiency benefits from replacing a larger engine with a smaller boosted engine that offers similar performance. Then the effects of different operating regimes and the effect of different proposed technologies are studied. The fuel economy enablers considered include variable valve timing (VVT) and variable compression ratios (VCR). The effects of VVT was studied to see which valve event scenarios afford the best operating efficiency and fuel economy during part load operation. VVT can also be a source of performance improvement if implemented appropriately. VCR operation is studied to see if the efficiency gains from VCR are additive with VVT or if they overlap to some degree. Typically, the fuel efficiency potential of a production engine is limited by spark knock. The engine studied here uses the geometrical and virtual compression ratio reductions offered by the VVT and VCR systems to give knock limit relief and allows the knock-limited BMEP curve to be pushed up. The results showed that the fuel economy gain with the above mentioned technologies is somewhat additive throughout the typical driving cycle but is highly dependent on proper optimization of the many system variables.

The research article presented here mainly focuses on the influence of pre and post-injection (split in to three injections) technique that was used to improve the ethanol fuel combustion in compression ignition mode (CI), with and without zirconia surface coating. Combustion simulation results and experimental results were investigated and compared with different experimental conditions. This research was used (95% Ethanol +5% water) as a fuel in a four stroke single cylinder variable compression ratio (VCR) engine. The VCR engine was used to optimize compression ratio (28.8:1) and conducted various experiments. Performance and exhaust emissions of NOx, CO and HC were compared with ethanol fuel split injection mode, single injection mode and diesel fuel mode. Brake thermal efficiency of pre and post injection mode was better than direct injection (DI) ethanol mode. The VCR engine operating with ethanol fuel split injection mode showed peak brake thermal efficiency (BTE) of 29%, which is nearly operating range in the baseline diesel engine. Ethanol fuel was mixed with 3% castorene R40 (lubrication oil) oil by volume due to fully soluble in alcohol fuels. It was used both air and liquid cooled engines running on methanol and ethanol fuel. Pre and post ethanol injection mode was 54.4 % reduction of Oxides of nitrogen (NOx) compared with single injection mode of operation. In comparison of diesel mode operation with zirconia coating was 3.8% increased than without coating.

Streszczenie:
Abstract Potential fuel consumption (FC) improvements of a parallel hybrid, light-duty, compressed natural gas (CNG) truck are numerically predicted using the combined benefits of a variable valve timing (VVT) and variable compression ratio (VCR) engine. A CNG hybrid electric vehicle (CNG-HEV) simulation model is developed in commercial software based on conventional delivery trucks in the Japanese market. The hybrid powertrain model includes a pre-transmission e-motor, high voltage battery, and production-typed 3.0 L CNG engine. Power splitting between e-motor and engine is controlled by a rule-based control strategy. Under the JE05 drive-cycle, engine maps such as torque, fuel and flow rate, and engine friction were measured under different intake valve timings in the 4-cylinder, twin-turbocharged spark-ignition engine with customized pistons to reach a compression ratio (CR) of 17. For VCR operations, the performance maps were recorded under CR14, CR15, and CR17 using standard valve timings. Simulated FC of the CNG-HEV under the JE05 driving cycle is improved by 10.9% and 15.7% using standard and optimal intake valve timings, respectively, against a conventional powertrain vehicle. By combining optimal VVT/VCR engine operations with a selected battery sizing, the predicted FC of the CNG-HEV could be achieved up to 18.2% against the conventional powertrain.

Streszczenie:
The Army’s modernization priorities include the development of augmented reality and virtual reality (AR/VR) simulations for enabling the regiment and increasing soldier readiness. The use of AR/VR technology at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) is also growing in the realm of military and civil works program missions. The ERDC Coastal and Hydraulics Laboratory (CHL) has developed a ship simulator to evaluate bay channels across the world; however, the current simulator has little to no physical realism in nearshore coastal regions (Figure 1). Thus, the ERDC team is researching opportunities to advance ship simulation to deliver the Ship Simulator of the Future (SSoF). The SSoF will be equipped with a VR mode and will more accurately resolve nearshore wave phenomena by ingesting precalculated output from a Boussinesq-type wave model. This initial prototype of the SSoF application is intended for research and development purposes; however, the technologies employed will be applicable to other disciplines and project scopes, including the Synthetic Training Environment (STE) and ship and coastal structure design in future versions.
