The “IDEAS” section for this month focuses on patterning using geometric figures. The sequentially planned activities help students discover the attributes—segments and angles—of various figures and how the figures can be combined to make a pattern; they then apply this information to the everyday world in such activities as making quilts and tessellations (tiling patterns). With the teacher's guidance, students develop the language needed to talk about their discoveries (definitions of less familiar terms are furnished in the Glossary): thus they will be able to communicate mathematically about geometric figures and patterning. The parent-child activity reinforces the school activity. Parents are invited to help students look for patterns in their community and share their findings with their child's class.

The “IDEAS” section for this month focuses on connections between mathematics and environmental concerns. The activities were designed to make students aware of various materials that people ordinarily use and discard, to increase their knowledge of the numbers of materials that people use, and to make plans to use marerials more conservatively. Plans may include reducing materials used, reusing materials, or recycling them. Each activity includes gathering, graphing, and interpreting data, thus extending opportunities for communicating, reasoning, and problem solving. Each activity features ideas to share with classmates or family members. These activities' investigative approaches are recommended in the Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics (NCTM 1989). Discussing the environment connects school life to everyday life. Most students want to make a difference in saving the earth, and the activities in “IDEAS” can help them get a start or extend their efforts in this appealing and important area.

Streszczenie:
The nitrogen and sulfur cycles are of growing significance in the scientific fields due to their biological processes. Both cycles have positive metabolic outcomes when in normal concentrations and conditions, however excessive intake of the inorganic anions each have fatal consequences. Concentrations of either nitrate and/or nitrite or sulfide beyond normal levels in results in toxicity, and which may result in death. Therefore, a simple, time sensitive and accurate method for the determination and quantitation of nitrite and/or nitrate and sulfide is required in the field of post-mortem toxicology, to aid in cause of death investigations. Unfortunately, several suicide cases are related to the excessive intake of nitrate and nitrite by overdose of the anions by medicine or curing salts and deaths involving car exhaust fumes also have high nitrite/nitrate levels in the deceased’s system. Due to the short half-life of nitrate in blood samples, nitrate is often required to be detected and quantitated after being converted to nitrite. With sulfide poisonings, sulfide is difficult to isolate and quantitate, so detection methods look for the metabolite thiosulfate in blood and urine samples. To the best of the authors knowledge, no recent papers have been published reviewing and comparing the methods applicable to human biological fluids since 2005. This review provides background on nitrate/nitrite and sulfide roles in biological systems, consequences of excess intake, and the current methodologies available for detection and quantitation of these anions. It was found that chromatographic methods, specifically gas chromatography mass-spectrometry and liquid chromatography mass-spectrometry, were most commonly used in forensic labs for the detection and quantitation of each anion.

Streszczenie:
The plethora of potential homemade explosive (HME) formulations combined with the fact they often exhibit large critical diameters make them expensive to characterize with traditional large-scale tests. A relatively new method for small-scale characterization was investigated using non-ideal explosive charges consisting of ammonium nitrate (AN) and various fuels. This optical characterization technique utilizes the rate of reaction wave velocity decay in the failing detonations of sub-critical diameter charges as a metric for the shock sensitivity of an explosive. The conditions for detonation initiation and failure have long been used to investigate shock sensitivity (critical diameter, gap tests, run-to-detonation experiments); however, the failure regime still remains largely unexplored. The utility of this small-scale characterization technique lies in its ability to determine the relative shock sensitivity of explosive with minimal material and tests while simultaneously providing transient velocity data for potential use in modeling efforts. In this work, high speed imaging was used and analyzed to determine rates of reaction wave velocity decay in the AN-fuel samples. Among the fuels tested with AN were diesel (ANFO), nitromethane (ANNM), and aluminum (ANAl). It was found that nitromethane was the most effective at sensitizing the AN of the systems considered. In both ANNM and ANAl, maximum shock sensitivity occurred at fuel percentages below stoichiometric mixtures. This was speculated to be due to the competing effects of stoichiometry and hot spot criticality. Sensitivity results were compared to run-to-failure distances and published critical diameter trends and showed good agreement.

AbstractThis chapter studies the exchanges of ideas and experiences related to public information within the Nordic region and beyond. As an empirical case, the analytical focus centres on the Swedish Board of Public Information (Nämnden för samhällsinformation, 1971–1981) and traces the various contacts—through seminars, study visits, conferences, and so on—that the agency initiated and was part of during the 1970s. By examining the archival material through the concepts of epistemic community and circulation of knowledge, the analysis shows how issues of public information attracted various actors—which represented different social sectors (bureaucracy, advertising industry, academia, etc.) and different interests—that met across national borders in attempts to address challenges of communicating societal important information to citizens.

AbstractDespite the presence of various social safety net programs, Indian households are not resilient to daily risks and exogenous shocks. To understand the incommensurate success of Indian social welfare programs in improving resilience, we focus on key elements of the policymaking process—ideas, interests, and institutions—in this chapter. We deliberate upon the ideas which motivate social welfare programs, the institutions responsible for delivering welfare benefits, and the political interests which shape program design and effectiveness in the country. Building upon arguments around policymaking process and the implementational hurdles, we highlight the importance of citizen-state social contract, local institutions, subnational politics, civil society activism, and state capacity in shaping the focus, form, and scope of social welfare policies.

Streszczenie:
Abstract BEETHOVEN’S musical style was inevitably founded in the musical language of the time and shaped by the influences of a great variety of music from Bach and even Gregorian chant to works by such contemporaries as Clementi and Cherubini. But from these influences and within this language he created his own highly personal style, easily recognizable because many of his most original and characteristic musical ideas recur in several works. As he grew older and built up an increasingly large fund of original ideas that could be reused, his distinctive style became even more pronounced. The term ‘musical idea’ in this context is very broad, ranging from short motifs to overall structures; it can encompass harmonic progressions, individual chords, key relationships, methods of development, rhythms, textures, types of contrast, and combinations of these or other elements. The idea may be reused in a quite different way and in a different context, and it may be modified so much that it is almost unrecognizable, so that it is difficult to tell in borderline cases whether there is any real relationship or not. And some ideas are so basic and commonplace that their reuse is not confined mainly to Beethoven; here too there are borderline cases. With these few caveats in mind, let us examine the various ways in which ideas from his earlier works reappeared in later ones, and how far back in his output such ideas can be traced.

Design studios are concourses for ideas. They are spatial arenas for learning and discovery that assemble and allow the formation of new knowledge and transcend existing comprehension. To enable it, students should be encouraged to constantly experiment, speculate, reimagine, critique and contribute within the agendas of the design studio whilst consistently engaged with the wider world of ideas, issues and concerns beyond studio walls. As educators and practitioner- academics, how can we curate learning environments that perform as design studio ‘think-tanks’ that simultaneously addresses the speculative ambitions of the studio (and studio leader) whilst engaging with the practicalities of the real-world brief of the client and as well as the aspirations of various partners, collaborators and stakeholders? The ‘Learning Frontiers: RMIT Urban High School’ project is a series of research-led industry partnered studios – is used here as a point of reflection to unpack specific design studio pedagogical attributes and behaviours that developed whilst leading the project. The studios simultaneously explored two primary threads of investigations; ‘typological procedural experiments’ as a design practice and experimental propositions for high school learning environments.

Streszczenie:
The essay in question brings images that were created during the development process of this author's thesis, made to compose the electronic game from the doctoral/PhD research in Arts. It is the result of readings and exercises on Aby Warburg's reflections on the survival of images through their anachrony and their intuitive interrelationships (pathosformeln), strongly influenced by his Atlas Mnemosine project, where he collects several and different images of various eras and organizes them on Boards, in them Warburg assumes them as elements that talk about some themes (in this case, his Boards spoke of the Renaissance, a constant theme in his research), this "talking about" capability is considered by the historian/theorist similar to a text, rather than words, images, Instead of grammar, aesthetics, the requirements for interpreting the Boards should be another, deeper, it demands more boldness and context. So, understanding Warburg's reflections as a method of reading and interpreting images in their contexts, I started to organize images that I photograph from my daily life, or that I encounter with different media, and which, intuitively, I realized have a common essence: my (Amazonian) region, I started to redraw them using an hatch technique, sometimes putting them on maps or reinforcing some feature that could refer to old cartographic drawings with the intention of, as a kind of cartographer of a contemporary Amazon, reframing stereotypes, paying attention to the local-global relations to which the region ends up being subjected by its inhabitants and other individuals around the world. Those drawings are build in a aesthetic-intuitive interrelationship with each other, based on the Amazon region in a collection of improbable images in the face of the forest-and-river stereotype, without ignoring such, being just a starting point for reflection on a proposed conversation by the images. Can an urban image be related to the Forest? Was it a good or bad relationship? Whatever is the relationship, would it be good or bad for whom? What do we have from the forest in the urban and vice versa? Where is the conflict and where is the symbiosis? Images, unlike texts, are better at instigating questions; where some may see confusion before the "freedom of interpretation" which the images propose to us, others, better equipped (or simply audacious), see in this freedom the opportunity for construction of deep knowledge, more linked to feeling (pathos) it’s not just “read” something from the image, but “feel it” instead. The process of capturing, curating, drawing and presenting the images carries a large number of reflections for the author of this work and hopes that other reflections may emerge from those who face such images, allowing not only the free interpretation of the individual works, but also the order in which they present themselves, thus exploring a greater potential of questions, feelings and interpretations. Thus, the author hopes that this experiment will be an exercise in interpretation similar to what he expects to see in the game he develops in his research.

Streszczenie:
In this paper, radiative transfer and time-dependent transport of radiation energy in participating media are modeled using a first-order spherical harmonics method (P1) and radiation diffusion. Partial differential equations for P1 and radiation diffusion are discretized by a variational form of the equations using support operators. Choices made in the discretization result in a symmetric positive definite (SPD) system of linear equations. Modeling multidimensional domains with complex geometries requires a very large system of linear equations with 10s of millions of elements. The computational domain is decomposed into a large number of subdomains that are solved on separate processors resulting in a massively parallel application. The linear system of equations is solved with a preconditioned conjugate gradient method. Various preconditioning techniques are compared in this study. Simple preconditioning techniques include: diagonal scaling, Symmetric Successive Over Relaxation (SSOR), and block Jacobi with SSOR as the block solver. Also, a two-grid multigrid-V-cycle method with aggressive coarsening is explored for use in the problems presented. Results show that depending on the test problem, simple preconditioners are effective, but the more complicated preconditioners such as an algebraic multigrid or the geometric multigrid are most efficient, particularly for larger problems and longer simulations. Optimal preconditioning varies depending on the problem and on how the physical processes evolve in time. For the insitu preconditioning techniques—SSOR and block Jacobi—a fuzzy controller can determine the optimal reconditioning process. Discussions of the current knowledge-based controller, an optimization search algorithm, are presented. Discussions of how this search algorithm can be incorporated into the development of data-driven controller incorporating clustering and subsequent construction of the fuzzy model from partitions are also discussed.

<p>The problems concerning the design, construction and use of buildings in a city environment or even other, less dense, environments, constitute a complex scenario in which various different disciplines are called to give their contribution: energy efficiency, reduction of the footprint, comfort, affordability and new living standards all play a key role in the design of new housing solutions. In the present paper, a new design idea is presented for the construction of buildings, capable of guaranteeing a high level of comfort for the users while safeguarding the surrounding territory. The proposed system, named GEODE, consists of a 120m diameter spherical steel or concrete structure with internal cores acting as shear-resistant elements. The shell contains five decks supported by mega-beams, on which 5-story high buildings can be erected, following design guidelines that have as a primary objective the preservation of high livability conditions. Among the defining characteristics of the system are its enhanced performance with respect to buildings of equal volume but different shape and the possibility of building the spherical shell using two different structural materials. These are distinctive features, which allow for the construction of small self-sufficient cities that synergically interact with their surrounding environment. In the present paper, an initial feasibility study is presented while the performance of different possible structural solutions, i.e. using R.C. or steel elements, are compared.</p>

Various graphical and iterative methods for the optimization of Heat Exchanger Networks (HENs) have been provided. This paper proposes a new alternative approach, based on two ideas. The first is that the optimum solution must be where the efficiencies of the individual heat exchangers are high, and the second idea is that in a heat exchanger network, it is desirable to maximize entropy generation as a result of heat transfer, and minimize entropy generation due to other effects, such as stream mixing. These two ideas provide a simple process for optimizing a network of four heat exchangers, and the concept can potentially be extended to larger systems.

Without the ability to get new ideas, an organization stagnates, declines and is eventually eliminated by competitors who have new ideas. Every day, regular employees - those who do office work, make products and serve customers - see a lot of issues and opportunities and come up with ideas on how they can be addressed. As a rule, there is a notion that management must think and employees do. Most employees have a lot of ideas and want to talk about them and see them applied. When the ideas of the employees are applied, they feel involved and appreciated, and the respect of the management for the employees will increase. Thus, the employees will receive more information, training sessions, authority, financial rewards. Ideas can come from the employees of different departments, groups and levels of experience. Too often, ideas are left unsaid or unrecognized. To accelerate business results, a tool is needed to streamline operations and maintain a sustainable innovation initiative. The paper aims to present in a world of technology and social networks the benefits brought by various IT solutions designed to help companies to collect, develop, classify ideas and create new ways of transmitting and developing ideas to customers and third interested parties. Also, within the paper are aspects related to the efforts of the company in the financial and organizational plan in order to effectively use such a tool. Ideas management software has elements in common with other types of software, such as knowledge management software, even the project planning software and the project management software. Most idea management systems suitable for the SMEs' use are cloud-based. It is the best option for most of the SMEs, except for those with very specific IT integration requirements.

Abstract Obtaining and analyzing customer and product information from various sources has become a top priority for major competitive companies who are striving to keep up with the digital and technological progress. Therefore, the need for creating a crowdsourcing platform to collect ideas from different stakeholders has become a major component of a company’s digital transformation strategy. However, these platforms suffer from problems that are related to the voluminous and vast amount of data. Different large sets of data are being spurred in these platforms as time goes by that render them unbeneficial. The aim of this paper is to propose a solution on how to discover the most promising ideas to match them to the strategic decisions of a business regarding resource allocation and product development (PD) roadmap. The paper introduces a 2-stage filtering process that includes a prediction model using a Random Forest Classifier that predicts ideas most likely to be implemented and a resource allocation optimization model based on Integer Linear Programming that produces an optimal release plan for the predicted ideas. The model was tested using real data on an idea crowdsourcing platform that remains unnamed in the paper due to confidentiality. Our prediction model has proved to be 92% accurate in predicting promising ideas and our release planning optimization problem results were found out to be 85% accurate in producing an optimal release plan for ideas.

This rapid literature review explores how to maintain essential state functions and basic service delivery during escalating conflict situations. It draws on literature and ideas from various overlapping agendas including development and humanitarian nexus; development, humanitarian and peacebuilding nexus (the “triple nexus”); fragile states; state-building; conflict sensitivity; resilience; and conflict prevention and early warning. There has been an extensive exploration of these ideas over the past decades: as the international development agenda has increasingly focussed on the needs of fragile and conflict-affected contexts (FCAS); as violent conflicts have become more complex and protracted; as the global share of poverty has become increasingly concentrated in FCAS highlighting the need to combine humanitarian crisis strategies with longer-term development strategies; as threats emanating from FCAS increasingly affect countries beyond those states and regions e.g. through serious and organised crime (SOC) networks, migration, terrorism, etc; and as global trends like climate change and demographic shifts create new stresses, opportunities, and risks.

The limited participation of Iraqi women in community decision-making in Kirkuk and Diyala is the result of various intertwined factors. This study explores emerging opportunities for social transformation in the context of sedimented layers of male privilege and the questioning of restrictive gender norms in the two governorates. With this report, Oxfam and its partners aim to dismantle barriers to women’s active participation, which is currently constrained by stereotypes and restrictive ideas about gender. Among the promising pathways for change are awareness-raising activities with male allies, alongside other longer-term efforts advancing transformative change in attitudes, practices, and behaviors.

This report focuses more on benefits of migration to the country of origin in relation to human capital, skills and knowledge transfer, and the transmission of ideas, norms and practices. While relying on studies from around the world in varying sectors, the report draws in large part on research on Africa and highlights specific research from the health sector. While there are various case studies on potential benefits that can be gained from diaspora contributions and return migration, there is a lack of systematic evidence, which is noted in the literature. There is also limited empirical evidence to confirm the impact of the transmission of norms and practices as these effects can be difficult to capture.

The purpose of this report is to map, conceptually and empirically, the diverse elements that constitute rightwing extremism. The aim is to offer readers a guide to this complexity and an appreciation for the numerous ideas, actors, and outcomes associated with RWE. The report is divided into two parts. The first focuses on the conceptual issues associated with RWE while the second explores how this complexity plays out in practice by examining various ways in which RWE has framed and reacted to Islam. This case study was selected as it illustrates the intricacies of varied and evolving RWE responses and because Islam and Muslims are often a major target of RWE violence and hostility. In Part 1 we caution against describing RWE as a single movement or an ideology given that those associated with RWE, overall, lack the common bonds that bind members of a movement together. We explore the substance of this complexity and summarize the key features on a schema focusing on actors, ideas, and outcomes associated with RWE. In Part 2 we illustrate, with reference to this conceptual complexity, how a plethora of mainly European RWE approaches to Islam underscores the pluralism of ideas and interpretations within RWE. This ideological plurality steers its proponents in divergent directions and results in varied outcomes. Not only do right-wing extremists, including those inspired by white supremacism, nationalism, and cultural nativism, adopt divergent positions on the issue, their approach ranges widely from co-optation and inspiration to non-engagement and outright hostility. These divergent positions, in turn, differ depending on local contexts, frames of reference, core beliefs, and individuals’ interpretations of each of these factors. This heterogeneity has important implications for practitioners, policymakers and those who study RWE movements. Importantly, perceptions of threat are not constant or consistent across RWE movements. Varied threat perceptions can, in turn, produce different types of violence and extremism, with a diverse and inconsistent list of potential targets for violent acts, potential allies, and perceived constituents among RWE actors.

The current practise of cost-benefit analysis inWestern countries consists of a collection of various incompatible ideas and methodologies to obtain replicable numbers for the costs and benefits of major public spending plans. This paper describes the main elements of the dominant methodology, which combines consumer and producer surplus, price-taking, government-inputs-as-outputs, hedonic pricing of externalities, and the issue-specific use of partial or general equilibrium thinking. The paper then discusses how that methodology can be augmented and partially replaced by looking at how prospective policies would change the total number of WELLBYs (life satisfaction-adjusted years of life) of the population. The ability of the WELLBY methodology to address complex externalities is illustrated by the Easterlin Discount, which is a proposed reduction factor of 75% on all estimates of private consumption benefits to offset the envy caused in others.

The purpose of the article is to analyze the topic of objectivity of knowledge, as a sociocultural problem, involving consideration of the relationship of various forms of skepticism with the sociocultural context. Research methods are philosophical and general logical. Research results. Pyrrhonian skepticism reflects the personal, socio-political and economic crisis of the Hellenistic era. The complete and consistent development of the views of extreme skeptics in practice turns into an apology for force or chaos. The time of M. Streszczenie:
This paper uses data from the Argentine House of Representatives to study the relationship between legislative effort and political success, as measured by reelection, becoming a leader of the House, and moving to higher political positions. It is found that more effort is associated with a higher probability of being reelected, and also that for those legislators that are reelected, higher effort is positively associated with acquiring leadership positions in the House. This happens in a context of fairly high legislative turnover and in a political context in which career paths of legislators are largely dictated by provincial party leaders. Interestingly, it is found that higher legislative effort is associated with a lower probability of improving politically outside Congress. These findings suggest the presence of various alternative career paths for Argentine politicians, and some degree of sorting. The paper concludes with some speculation on these politician types and with ideas for further research.
