We conducted a phylogeographic analysis of the genus Gephyrocharaxin Venezuela to evaluate geomorphologic evidence for the formation of the country's main watersheds and to establish a biogeographical hypothesis of possible diversification mechanisms of the Neotropical freshwater fish fauna. We assayed eight enzyme systems and general proteins to estimate genetic variability (H, P), intraspecific structuring in several Gephyrocharax valencia and G. venezuelae populations (FIS, FIT, and FST), and a phylogenetic approach for the three species of Gephyrocharax in Venezuela, using Corynopoma riisei as the external group. Fourteen presumptive lociindicate that populations of the three species of Gephyrocharaxanalyzed show a clear genetic inter-specific differentiation, determined by four loci with fixed alleles (GPI-B*,IDH*, ME-1*, and ME-2*). The resulting cladogram shows two major clades: a monophyletic group consisting of Gephyrocharax n. sp. and G. venezuelae(restricted to the northwest of the country) and a group formed exclusively by G. valencia (distributed along the largest geographic range). Speciation of the Venezuelan lineages of the genus Gephyrocharaxcould be explained by the origin and course movements of the present Orinoco River together with geomorphologic processes that have occurred in northern Venezuela since the Miocene.

Este trabajo tuvo como objetivo analizar el proceso histórico de la identidad urbana y arquitectónica en Valencia – Venezuela, en el período de 1941 a 1958. Para ello se hizo un abordaje metodológico desde la perspectiva cualitativa, perfilándose desde el punto de vista del estado del arte, como descriptiva y explicativa, basándose en el método de investigación histórica y la hermenéutica para el análisis de la información recabada a través del arqueo heurístico de diversas fuentes. Con base en lo anterior, se procedió a conceptualizar la identidad arquitectónica de los espacios urbanos en Valencia en el periodo de 1941 a 1958. Los hallazgos encontrados permitieron establecer consideraciones finales que estiman que los cambios económicos, políticos y sociales acaecidos en Venezuela en el periodo de 1941 a 1958, llevan a una transformación urbana y arquitectónica en Valencia, marcada por una identidad propia, signada por valores, tradiciones y costumbres que persisten a pesar del avance de la modernidad. No obstante, destaca la arquitectura como muestra de esa identidad propia.

AbstractAstronomical observations have been documented in pre-Hispanic cultures. However, little is known about the astronomical heritage of pre-Hispanic societies in Venezuela, since there are no evidence of an ancestral material culture as other regions of Meso and South America, and these native Venezuelan groups lacked a written, alphabetic or ideographic language. There are innumerable petroglyph deposits in almost all regions of Venezuela, especially near Lake Valencia (Carabobo state) and those of the Andean foothills (Barinas state). By means of computerized simulation and archaeoastronomy techniques, the occurrence of a total solar eclipse is verified: in July 1, 577 at the Vigirima site; and another total solar eclipse at noon on May 16, 1398 at the Bum Bum site. It is concluded that the contemplation of the total eclipses of the Sun, must lead to the need for communication and recording, and lacking any type of writing, they drew the phenomenon, using the techniques and means at their disposal: engraving on rocks.

Since their launch in 2006, the communal councils have been heralded as a significant step toward the establishment of a radical, participatory democracy in Venezuela. Ethnographic fieldwork carried out in a working-class barrio in Valencia, Venezuela’s third-largest city, shows that local residents perceive and make use of the communal councils in a variety of ways. Older women in particular have become central players in community political life as a result of the reforms, although the burdens they take on arguably reproduce patterns of gendered inequality. Some residents express suspicion of new community leaders, accusing them of corruption, and there are conflicting views of what participatory democracy actually means in practical terms. The communal councils should be understood as contested spaces, the ambiguities and conflicts within them reflecting broader tensions within the Bolivarian project as a whole. Desde su lanzamiento en 2006, los consejos comunales han sido aclamados como un paso importante hacia el establecimiento de una democracia radical y participativa en Venezuela. Trabajo de campo etnográfico en un vecindario de clase trabajadora en Valencia, la tercera ciudad más grande de Venezuela, demuestra que los residentes locales perciben y hacen uso de los consejos comunitarios de muy diversas maneras. Refería la disputa a la mujer de un tal don Juan de Ochoa, quien para entonces profesaba como notario público en la ciudad de Valencia y a quien la Real Audiencia, diez años había sido erigida en la ciudad de Caracas, le había provisto el uso del tapete y estar “en posesión de ello como persona blanca”3. De Ochoa, “el Notario Ochoa”, poco es lo que se conoce. La documentación capitular del archivo del concejo municipal de Valencia de las postrimerías del siglo XVIII y los inicios del XIX, apenas lo registra escuetamente como “el Notario Ochoa”4. El chigüiro es autóctono del continente americano; en Colombia se encuentran dos especies: Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris, con distribución en los Llanos Orientales de Colombia y Amazonas colombiano (también distribuido en Argentina, Paraguay, Ecuador, Venezuela, Brasil, Perú, Bolivia, las Guyanas); e Hydrochoerus isthmius, que habita al norte de Colombia, Panamá y Venezuela, aislada por los Andes de Mérida y la Serranía del Perijá. Este estudio buscó conocer el área de acción de H. isthmius, en paisajes ganaderos de Córdoba, al noroccidente de Colombia. Durante el período de marzo y mayo de 2007, dentro de predios ganaderos del municipio de Valencia, departamento de Córdoba, Colombia, se realizaron trabajos de seguimiento a individuos de dos grupos de una población de chigüiros. Se utilizó la técnica de radio-seguimiento usando cuatro animales previamente radio-marcados. Se encontró que el área de acción de H. isthmius en paisajes de ganadería extensiva de Valencia, presenta una mayor área de acción durante la época seca (1,93±0,88 ha), comparada con la época de lluvias (0,47±0,32 ha) en contraste con áreas de acción descritos en otros trabajos de H. hydrochaeris con reportes de áreas de uso que varían desde 5,5±10,8 ha hasta 44 (10-56) ha, H. isthmius presenta áreas de acción más pequeños (1,20±1,0 ha).

Para lograr esto se definió comoobjetivos específicos diagnosticar la cultura organizacional de la empresa yexaminar la cultura organizacional existente. La metodología empleada es unenfoque cuantitativo con diseño de campo, no experimental. Se aplicó uncuestionario a diez trabajadores de C.M., C.A. de quince ítems con respuestasde tipo policotómicas. Los resultados analizados en base a las bases teóricasconsultadas, permitieron evidenciar de manera concluyente que la empresapresenta debilidades en su cultura organizacional.Palabras clave: Estrategias, valores, cultura organizacional ABSTRACT The objective of this study is to evaluate the organizational culture of thecompany C.M., C.A. located in Valencia, Carabobo state, Venezuela that allowslaying the foundations to recommend strategies aimed at improving theclimate and performance of the organization. This article examines the Venezuelan government’s efforts to establish a ‘communal state’ through the eyes of working-class chavista activists in the city of Valencia. It argues that the attempt to incorporate grassroots community organisations into a state-managed model of popular democracy produces a series of ‘utopian disjunctures’ for the actors involved. These disjunctures, the article contends, stem from conflicting political temporalities within the chavista project, as long-term aspirations of radical democracy clash with more short-term demands to obtain state resources and consolidate the government’s power. The case highlights the tensions generated by efforts to reconcile radical democratic experiments with left-nationalist electoral politics.

Realizó sus Cursos de Posgrado y de Doctorado en la Universidad de Barcelona (1957-1964), obteniendo el título de Doctor en Ciencias Biológicas (Sobresaliente Cum Laude).

La variabilidad y el cambio climático están teniendo fuertes repercusiones sobre diferentes variables meteorológicas; induciendo cambios en el patrón de precipitación que afecta directamente la disponibilidad hídrica en los agroecosistemas. Es por esta razón que el objetivo de este trabajo fue analizar la variabilidad interanual de la lluvia tropical y su influencia en la agricultura de secano de la cuenca del Lago de Valencia en Venezuela. Para esto se utilizaron los datos mensuales y anuales de precipitación (1969-1999) de ocho estaciones climatológicas. Posteriormente, se calcularon los estadísticos descriptivos básicos, se describió la evolución de la precipitación y por último, se calculó del rango percentil P90%-P10% como indicador de la variación de la amplitud de la serie. Los resultados establecen que existen cambios en el régimen interanual de la precipitación y, tras analizar las tendencias en la precipitación anual en las localidades Yuma Caserío, Colonia El Trompillo, Agua Blanca y Las Dos Bocas, existe reducción generalizada en la lluvia, estos cambios, afectarían negativamente la generación y la disponibilidad de humedad en las localidades agrícolas, las cuales dependen fuertemente del agua de lluvia. La vocación agrícola en las tierras bajas de la cuenca del lago de Valencia, la hace muy vulnerable a los episodios secos persistentes, donde los cultivos de secano como sorgo industrial, maíz, hortalizas, frutas (musáceas) y cítricos merman sus rendimientos durante la ausencia prolongada de lluvias, lo que afecta al sector agrícola de la región.

Odontostilbe pulchra, previously considered species inquirenda in Cheirodontinae and doubtfully assigned from the río Orinoco basin, is redescribed with the rediscovery of two syntypes. Originally described to the Island of Trinidad, O. pulchra is widespread in Venezuela, the río Orinoco basin, in smaller coastal drainages of northern South America, in the Lake Valencia system, and río Essequibo basin. A punctual occurrence in the upper rio Negro, near southernmost headwaters of the río Orinoco, extends its distribution to the Amazon basin. Additionally, two new species of Odontostilbe from the río Orinoco basin are described.

Cuestiones como la planificación de una tutoría online, qué tipo de funciones y competencias debe dominar, el uso de herramientas sincrónicas y asincrónicas, o el desarrollo de diferentes estrategias, serán algunas de las cuestiones abordadas. Para finalizar se expone la cuestión sobre los mecanismos de formación disponibles que le permitan adquirir la formación necesaria e imprescindible para formar parte de un proceso de formación online, más concretamente, ser un e-tutor.AbstractIn this article some of the ideas are picked up expressed in the report offered in "Eduweb 2005: Virtualizando la Educación", taken place in Valencia (Venezuela), and that they rotate around those aspects that the virtual tutor should keep in mind if it is part of a formation process through the net. Questions as the planning of an online tutorship, what type of functions and skills should dominate, the use of synchronous and asynchronous tools, or the development of different strategies, they will be some of the approached questions. To be concluded it exposes the question on the available formation mechanisms that allow him to acquire the necessary and indispensable formation to be part of a process of online formation, more concretely, to be an e-tutor.

El presente estudio describe la experiencia en la implementación del modelo andragógico aula invertida en la asignatura “Histotecnología III” del Departamento de Ciencias Morfológicas y Forenses de la Facultad de Ciencias de la Salud-Universidad de Carabobo, para el desarrollo de competencias y atención personalizada de los estudiantes de la carrera técnica en Histotecnología. Mediante un nivel descriptivo y un diseño explicativo secuencial, se obtuvo una aceptación de la implementación de la estrategia de aprendizaje enfocada en el estudiante, mediante la revisión del material previo a la clase presencial. No obstante, los estudiantes presentaron dificultades para el acceso y revisión de los recursos, siendo necesario reforzar los contenidos teóricos al inicio de la clase presencial, por ende la atención personalizada permitió desarrollar las competencias acorde a las capacidades de cada estudiante, las cuales se vieron aplicadas a lo largo del semestre tanto en las actividades de consolidación durante el componente teórico como el componente práctico. Por último, se sugiere la constancia durante todo el proceso, para sacar de la zona de confort a los estudiantes que han crecido bajo el modelo tradicional enfocado en la enseñanza.

AbstractThe Astronomical Society of the University of Carabobo (SAUC) is an activity of permanent scientific dissemination, which uses Astronomy as a tool for the scientific enculturation of the local population and non-formal teaching of Science and Technology. The SAUC base their Learning activities through the Bachelard epistemology and Morin pedagogy. Furthermore the focus of the dissemination and popularization of Astronomy must focus on knowledge for life and on overcoming epistemic obstacles between knowledge expert and knowledge taught. The SAUC’s activities are focused on holding Master Class, seminars, astronomy courses for amateurs; development of multimedia materials and the national astronomical ephemeris. The qualitative evaluation, after two decades of activities of the SAUC allows us to conclude that astronomy can affect as a motivating axis for cultural appropriation and scientific enculturation by broad sectors of the local community, regardless of age, gender, race, socio-economic activity, or ideological-cultural diversity.

Maintaining or increasing SOC concentration is fundamental for reducing the effects of global warming and increasing soil productivity. In this paper, a method based on Landsat 8 OLI products was developed for qualitatively monitoring in the Lake Valencia basin (Venezuela) the dynamic of SOC concentration between the years 2013 to 2018. The developed method uses the Green (B3), NIR (B5) and SW1 (B6) bands of Landsat 8 OLI sensor for detecting changes in the spectral signatures of bare soils that indicate possible variations in their concentrations of SOC. It was found that for the study period, the Lake Valencia basin soils do not present spectral features of significant variation in SOC concentration. An area of 8.61Km2 (0.3% of the study area) was identified as a zone with a possible reduction of SOC concentration. In case of insufficient data for developing remote sensing based predictive models, the proposed method allows qualitatively monitoring and categorizing the dynamic of SOC concentration and identifying areas with spectral features of a possible variation in SOC concentration.

El objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar el estado actual de los operadores de transporte en el Área Metropolitana de Valencia, Venezuela, demostrando como este sector ha quedado desasistido, llevándolos al abandono del servicio por la falta de políticas públicas y una débil gestión de apoyo gubernamental de los entes competentes. En Venezuela los problemas de transporte son de carácter estructural y vienen agudizándose progresivamente, hasta evidenciar actualmente niveles inaceptables. Las quejas de los usuarios del transporte público en el ámbito nacional acusan el deterioro físico y operacional de un sistema obsoleto que no logra acoplarse a la demanda de los ciudadanos. El abandono por parte de los prestadores del servicio producto de una galopante inﬂación, una tasa de decrecimiento del parque automotor envejecido, falta de combustible, de dinero efectivo, a lo que se le agregan las restricciones forzadas por la pandemia entre otros, agudiza el problema de accesibilidad de la población de satisfacer las necesidades básicas a los bienes y servicios, ya que la movilidad representa una necesidad y uno de los derechos fundamentales del individuo. Esta investigación fue desarrollada bajo la modalidad no experimental, fundamentalmente de tipo cualitativo y nivel evaluativo, descriptivo y explicativo. Los resultados evidencian una signiﬁcativa disminución en la oferta de transporte público que alcanza un 61,07% en el AMV.

In July 2003, noticeable deformations of leaves were observed on a local variety of Capsicum chinense, also called ‘Aji dulce’, from a pepper plantation located in Venezuela, (Monagas State). ‘Aji dulce’ is a basic ingredient of the Venezuelan gastronomy with an estimated cultivated area of 2,000 ha. The seeds of this local pepper are obtained by the growers who reproduce and multiply their own seeds every year. Seeds of affected plants were sent to our laboratory, and a group of approximately 100 seeds was sown in a controlled greenhouse that belongs to the Polytechnic University of Valencia, Spain. Three months later, obvious curling and bubbling developed on the leaves of the plants. Extracts of symptomatic plants tested negative for Tomato mosaic virus (ToMV), Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV), Pepper mild mottle virus (PMMV), and Tobacco etch virus (TEV) by double-antibody sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (DAS-ELISA) with policlonal antibodies specific to each virus (Loewe Biochemica GMBH, Sauerlach, Germany; Phyto-Diagnostics, INRA, France). Total RNA was isolated from 0.5 g of original seed sent from Venezuela and from 25 samples of leaves of plants grown in the greenhouse with an RNeasy Plant Mini Kit (Qiagen Sciences, Germantown, Maryland). The RNA isolated was used in reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) with specific primers for Tobacco mild green mosaic virus (TMGMV) (1) predicted to amplify a 530 bp of the coat protein region. From all samples, a RT-PCR product of the expected size was obtained and then sequenced. BLAST analysis of one sequence (GenBank Accession No. DQ460731) showed high levels of identity with TMGMV isolates, with more than 99% nucleotide identity with the DSMZ PV-112 isolate (GenBank Accession No. AJ429096). The symptomatology observed on pepper plants, the TMGMV RT-PCR assay, and the consensus of sequenced regions with TMGMV lead us to conclude that TMGMV was the causal agent of the diseased C. chinense plants. Although TMGMV has a wide plant host range occurring worldwide (1), to our knowledge, this is not only the first time TMGMV has been detected in Venezuela, but also the first report of TMGMV in C. chinense in Venezuela and the first reliable probe of the TMGMV seed transmission. Introducción: La hendidura labio-palatina es un defecto congénito, donde existe la separación del labio superior y fisura del maxilar, por la fusión incompleta de los procesos maxilares y naso-medial del embrión, que conduce a múltiples alteraciones. Objetivo: Determinar la prevalencia de hendidura labio-palatina en pacientes que acuden a la Asociación Valenciana, para la atención interdisciplinaria de pacientes con alteraciones cráneo-faciales, Valencia-Carabobo/Venezuela, en el período 2016-2017. Materiales y métodos: Se realizó una investigación de campo, descriptiva, con el apoyo de historias clínicas. Con una población de 93 pacientes y una muestra pertinente de 45 pacientes; plasmando la información en gráficos y cuadros por frecuencia y % simple. Resultados: La hendidura labio-palatina bilateral, se presenta con mayor frecuencia que la unilateral, puede ser derecha e izquierda; todas predominantes en el sexo masculino y en edades de 0- a 9 años. Conclusión: Esta alteración acarrea problemas estéticos, alimenticios, auditivos, respiratorios y foniátricos, que deben ser abordados por un grupo multidisciplinario. Cada vez su prevalencia es alta, lo que conlleva a crear instituciones especializadas, con carácter resolutivo, para dar respuestas rápidas, a las diferentes malformaciones cráneo-faciales.

The Fundación John Boulton was established in 1950 as a privately funded institution sponsored by the Casas Boulton of Caracas, Valencia, and Maracaibo. For many years, the Fundación functioned in the Villa Espalmador in El Paraíso, but it has recently moved to new quarters in Torre El Chorro, Avenida Universidad, in the center of Caracas. Founded to facilitate research on the history and culture of Venezuela, the Fundación has assembled a strong collection covering the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Moreover, the collection is constantly being augmented by purchases, exchanges, and donations of additional material. The material available in the Fundación is found in the library, in the various archives, and in two museums.
