Streszczenie:
The amount of information available on the web is growing constantly. As a result, theproblem of retrieving any desired information is getting more difficult by the day. Toalleviate this problem, several techniques are currently being used, both for locatingpages of interest and for extracting meaningful information from the retrieved pages.Information extraction (IE) is one such technology that is used for summarizingunrestricted natural language text into a structured set of facts. IE is already being appliedwithin several domains such as news transcripts, insurance information, and weatherreports. Various approaches to IE have been taken and a number of significant resultshave been reported. In this thesis, we describe the application of IE techniques to the domain of universityweb pages. This domain is broader than previously evaluated domains and has a varietyof idiosyncratic problems to address. We present an analysis of the domain of universityweb pages and the consequences of having them input to IE systems. We then presentUniversityIE, a system that can search a web site, extract relevant pages, and processthem for information such as admission requirements or general information. TheUniversityIE system, developed as part of this research, contributes three IE methods anda web-crawling heuristic that worked relatively well and predictably over a test set ofuniversity web sites. We designed UniversityIE as a generic framework for plugging in and executing IEmethods over pages acquired from the web. We also integrated in the system a genericweb crawler (built at the University of Kentucky) and ported to Java and integrated anexternal word lexicon (WordNet) and a syntax parser (Link Grammar Parser).

The main purpose of the present study was to examine the effect of perceived social support, psychological distress, prior help-seeking experience, and gender on attitudes toward seeking psychological help of university students. In addition to the main purpose
gender, faculty, living arrangement, and year of study differences in attitudes toward seeking psychological help and students&rsquo
knowledge about the psychological counseling services of the METU Health and Guidance Center were investigated. The sample consisted of 417 (223 female, 194 male) undergraduate students of Middle East Technical University. The data was gathered using the scale of Attitudes Toward Seeking Psychological Help-Shortened (ASPH-S), the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS), General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12) and a demographic information form. It was found that nearly half of the participants (47%) had knowledge about the psychological counseling services of the METU Health and Guidance Center. Friends were the most frequently stated sources of help (59%) in times of need for personal problems. Females had more positive attitudes toward seeking psychological help than males. Students of the Faculty of the Arts and Sciences, and students of the Faculty of the Education were found to have more favorable attitudes than of the Faculty of Engineering students. Finally, hierarchical regression analysis showed that perceived social support, prior help-seeking experience, and gender significantly predicted attitudes toward seeking psychological help. However, psychological distress was not associated with help-seeking attitudes.

My thesis in this work is that the universities could be active agents of development, intervening successfully on a local problematic area by networking with public and private actors in order to generate two specific factors of development: social and human capital. I set this idea in the context of the literature on higher education and the debates on innovative and active social functions for the contemporary university. This is the focus of Chapter 1. In Chapter 2 I approach the problem on a deeper level, in its organizational terms: I analyse the public-private partnerships as instruments for the universities to self-assign and re-interpret their local engagement for the creation of human and social capitals. The hypothesis presented in the first two chapters are tested in Chapter 3 on my case study: the Boston University-Chelsea Partnership, a unique example of the day-by-day management of a public district (the Chelsea public schools, MA) by a private university (the Boston University).
This thesis primarily focuses on university licensing. To understand the social impact of the university licensing strategies, we examine the link between the degree of exclusivity of licenses and the various characteristics of the licensed inventions. The theoretical and empirical findings of our research suggest that the practices of university technology transfer offices (TTOs) may not always be optimal, underlying the fact that there may still be room for the improvement. We also suggest that, when the innovations are sequential, universities might introduce alternative open source licensing (OSL) strategies. Furthermore, we expand our study by examining the dynamic interactions between various formal and informal channels of transfer. Our longitudinal qualitative methodology suggests that, dynamic interaction creates a strong cumulative effect with respect to the research valorization activity and reinforces the collective dimension of valorization

Streszczenie:
The present research examines the conflicted position of university museums as part of an overarching institutional structure - the university -, but yet are also characterized, as a result of a wide range of uniquely museological traits, as peculiar institutions in their own right. The objective is to understand what university and university museums enunciate about their institutional rationality. The notion of territory and territorial action offer the possibility to develop a flexible but tight research frame for analyzing the relationship between both institutions. The research explores a case study: the relationship between the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM, National Autonomous University of Mexico} and the Museo Universitario Arte Contemporánea (MUAC, Contemporary Art University Museum). The thesis is divided in 7 chapters and 2 appendices. Chapter one is the introduction, chapter two presents a panorama of research field about university museums, chapter three looks towards Mexican context, and how university has been a key agent to the develepment of museological context in Mexico, chapter four delivers the theoretical framework that has being used, chapter five addresses MUAC origins, chapter six delivers the core analysis of the study case, chapter seven presents key findings and conclusions; appendix 1 offers an example of discourse analysis, and appendix 2 delivers the transcriptions of the interviews held with MUAC's staff.

Streszczenie:
The thesis consists of five papers: three deal with the efficiency of higher education institutions (HEI) and two with entrepreneurship among university graduates. The efficiency of HEIs is analyzed at three different levels: units of one university, universities of one country and universities of a group of European countries. Using data envelopment analysis (DEA) the first paper compares technical efficiency among university units at the Royal Institute of Technology (Stockholm). An interesting result is that there seems to be a complementary relationship between efficiency of resource utilization in teaching and in research. The second paper applies stochastic frontier analysis (SFA) to estimate the cost efficiency of Swedish higher education institutions. According to the estimates, half of the Swedish HEIs have an above average efficiency of 85 percent. The efficiency differences are mainly influenced by the source of funding, HEI size, the number of students per faculty as well as faculty and student compositions. The third paper analyses the cost efficiency of universities among a set of public higher education institutions from six European countries by means of stochastic frontier techniques. The results suggest small variation in the mean economic efficiency of higher education institutions from UK, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Switzerland, implying that the efficiency differences are not explained by country effects. Instead the variations in efficiency are related to organizational differences. The two essays on entrepreneurship among university graduates are based on a unique dataset encompassing individual level data on all employees registered in the Swedish labor market. The first paper explores the differences in entrepreneurial choice of graduates from different universities. The main finding from this paper is that the entrepreneurial choice of graduates from internationally ranked Swedish universities systematically differs from others with the difference varying by the area of education. The second paper on entrepreneurship aims at explaining the high interest in entrepreneurship among arts graduates and finds that the need for self-expression is among the main motivations for their high interest in entrepreneurship.

Streszczenie:

According to a report published in 2015, the National Center for Education estimated that over 20 million students were forecasted to enroll in higher education in the 2016–17 school year, situating American universities as major institutional food retailers. Over the past two decades, corporate food providers have increasingly sought long-term public and private university contracts as a means to expand their reach into lucrative campus food landscapes (foodscapes), replacing in-house services with cheaper, more “efficient, and “productive” dining strategies. Companies such as Sodexo, Aramark, and Bon Appetit control the foodscapes of many university campuses across the United States, creating food environments dominated by corporate interests.

However, at the same time these corporate food service providers have colonized university food terrains, a growing movement of consumers concerned with ethical food sourcing have driven students across the United States to seek alternatives to dominant food sourcing strategies on their campuses. In a context of increased corporate control over their university foodscapes, student across the US have launched campaigns aiming to develop and establish student food cooperatives (SFCs), organizations seeking to assert the availability of sustainable, ethical, and healthy food options on campus in addition to pushing for more student decision-making power within their university food environments (Marsden, 2000).

It is within this context that my thesis aims to explore if and how student food cooperatives are creating new spaces for food sovereignty and if they are democratizing the control over their university food systems through campus based food initiatives.

Richardson, Tina. "The unseen university : a schizocartography of the Redbrick University campus". Thesis, University of Leeds, 2014. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/6916/.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
This thesis examines the tensions between the discourse of Higher Education (HE) in Britain and how the university is physically manifest. Using Bill Readings’s concept of “excellence” from The University in Ruins (1996), it critiques the corporate oriented contemporary university in an attempt to challenge its neoliberal rhetoric. The narratives and processes that support the concept of the corporatised university – whether they appear in the form of its relationship with industry, in the performative measures applied to teaching or in the situating of the student as consumer – will be examined by using the University of Leeds campus. Using archived documents, historical information and psychogeographical methodology, a poststructuralist analysis is provided of the Redbrick University campus based on its origins in the Civic University model of HE. As well as including spatial theorists from the field of urban theory and postmodern geography, the main poststructuralist thrust will be from Félix Guattari – the schizoanalysis he carried out in the institution of psychiatry and his work on molecular revolutions. The methodology will include analysis in the form of urban walking and theories about walking practices, which will include the work of the Situationist International (1957-1972). The outcome of the project appears takes the form of a discourse analysis and semiology of university representations. This thesis offers a supplementary social history of the campus and a critique of university urban development. It provides a view of the campus that is other to the typical one, demonstrating that it can be a place where people challenge conventional routes and express their desire to be creative in response to university space. This schizocartography reveals the hidden university campus and suggests that there are minoritorian politics in operation that challenge dominant discourses and how they appear spatially.

Streszczenie:
The 'university' has been around for centuries, and yet the majority of British Universities have yet to reach their 50th birthdays. The higher education sector has been through extensive change over a relatively short period of time, and will continue to do so as the future requires it. This thesis briefly maps the residual and dominant models of the university before examining the emergent model and drawing out a future model. While much of the history is based in Britain, the emergent and future models draw on examples from all around the world. Essentially the future model of the university will have three core elements. It will be corporate, global, and virtual. Each of these is examined in detail in the thesis, and thought is also given to the potential impact of these developments on academics within universities and potential future students. The models presented here may cause concern and some resistance in the higher education community. It is hoped that they will stimulate debate and action regarding the future, rather than encouraging people to stand their ground and defend the dominant or residual models. The emergent model is already upon us. The future model is there for us to shape.

Odendal, Marta W. "Students' university choice". Thesis, University of Stirling, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/23039.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
This thesis addresses UK students’ university choice using discrete choice methods and micro-data obtained from Higher Education Statistical Agency for graduates between 2006 and 2010. The thesis consists of three chapters with each addressing a different aspect of students’ choice. The studies are intended to provide policy-makers and other decision-makers with valuable information that will help them to implement strategies and policies for better higher education. Some work in the literature has been dedicated to students’ university choice. This thesis explores this body of work and builds on it, extends it and improves what is previously known in the literature. The aim of the first chapter is to investigate what affects students’ university choice. It contributes to the literature by establishing the best method to do so. Two models are used: the standard conditional logit and conditional logit with, what is called in this paper, alternative specific constants. Conditional logit with alternative specific constants improves on conditional logit twofold: it deals with unobserved university characteristics and improves the model fit. The results show that the probability of attending a university decreases with an increase in tuition fees and distance between students’ home and the university, and decreases in students’ socio-economic status. The second chapter further investigates the importance of distance on students’ university choice and it contributes to the literature by calculating the willingness to pay of students for distance to university. The chosen models are estimated for different socio-economic group of students separately. This methodology allows for meaningful comparison between socio-economic groups and produces more reliable estimates due to the fact that it accommodates for different unobserved characteristics of universities for different groups of students. The results show that students with the highest socio-economic status are not affected or have a positive utility of distance. The willingness to pay of other socio-economic groups are mixed and depend on the university characteristics used in the model. The third chapter focuses on students’ attitudes towards costs and benefits of university degree by calculating the discount rate of future income using marginal utility of graduate income and tuition fees. In addition, the chapter shows how use of consideration sets of universities for each student improves the model fit. The results show that students have a normal discount rate around 1% without consideration sets. The discount rate becomes negative in all models apart from one, when consideration sets are used.

Hoye, Katherine. "University Intellectual Property Policies And University-Industry Technology Transfer In Canada". Thesis, University of Waterloo, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10012/2855.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
This research investigates the relationship between those incentives for faculty support of university-industry technology transfer that are governed by university intellectual property policies and technology transfer outcomes at Canadian universities.
Empirical research, chiefly conducted in the United States, has explored the link between the incentives that are governed by IP policies and various outcomes and found that financial incentives are correlated with a variety of outcomes. This research extends the literature by exploring the same underlying relationship, in Canada, where IP policies also determine ownership and control of the development of the IP; some universities retain control over the development and other universities let the ownership and control vest with the inventors.
The research question was pursued by conducting three studies, each of which provided a different perspective. The first study seeks to explain cross-institutional patterns in the numbers of patents held by Canadian universities using variables that represent the financial incentives and control offered to faculty inventors by the universities' policies. The second study investigated the impact of a policy change at the University of Toronto, using interrupted time series analysis techniques. The third study investigated the experiences of faculty inventors at the University of Waterloo through indepth interviews and thematic analysis of the resulting qualitative data.
The first, cross-sectional study failed to generate statistically significant results. In the second, longitudinal study, the change from a "university-owns" to an "inventor-owns" policy appeared to have significantly and substantially increased the number of invention disclosures submitted to the University of Toronto by its faculty members. The third, qualitative study suggests that faculty members interpret the incentives governed by intellectual property policies and that this interpretation is shaped by group norms, academic leadership, university culture and the inventors' experiences with technology transfer support organizations. Therefore, Studies 2 and 3 indicate that university intellectual property policies are effective levers with which to stimulate university-industry technology transfer and thus deserve further study. The importance of university factors in Study 3 implies that intellectual property policies must fit with their organizational contexts in order to be productive.
This research also has important policy implications. Many governments have been attempting to emulate the American Bayh-Dole Act by introducing or changing national regulations affecting university IP policies. This research suggests that these national regulations may actually depress researcher support for technology transfer and thus the amount of activity at those institutions that would benefit from an alternate policy. In effect, standardization of university IP policies through national regulations may deprive university administrators of an effective lever for encouraging technology transfer on their campuses. This inference will be the focus of further research which will broaden the work documented in this dissertation by exploring the relationship between university IP policies, university-industry technology transfer, and university factors, including culture, across a wider range of universities.

Academic freedom finds a consecration in the freedom of science, protected by the German Constitution. The freedom of science ensures to the individual exercising research and teaching , a space free from any interference by the public authorities. The German university tradition is marked by the Humboldtian principles of the early nineteenth century, including the principle of unity of research and education. Wilhelm von Humboldt, founder of the University of Berlin in 1810, insists on the importance of the practice of freedom with regard to personal autonomy .The "university law" in France makes it difficult to maintain guarantees benefiting the scientist, the group of academics or the institution as a whole. Streszczenie:
It has recently become rather common for life science faculty to own a private company related to university research, an extreme form of entrepreneurial activity. Yet our understanding of how this changes the experiences of the entrepreneurial scientists and administrators is limited. This thesis, based primarily on in-depth interviews with three entrepreneurial biotechnology faculty, their graduate students and employees, their department heads, and university-level administrators, reveals how scientists and administrators are responding to conflicts and others' perceptions of conflict arising from their entrepreneurial activity. The faculty and administrators organize these conflicts into five categories: issues which they consider to be genuine conflicts but do not act upon; issues which they consider to be genuine conflicts and do act upon; issues which they do not consider to pose genuine conflicts but which they act upon because others perceive those issues to be conflicts; issues which they consider to be conflicts but which none of the principals expect to be experienced at their particular university; and issues which they do not consider to raise genuine conflicts whether experienced at their university or elsewhere. This thesis also shows how entrepreneurial faculty are incorporating business into their teaching and are altering their interactions with academic peers and graduate students all due to their entrepreneurial activity.

The aim of this essay is to study how the University Church is represented in student newspapers. By conducting an inductive thematic analysis on sixteen articles chosen from newspapers distributed by the student union at three Swedish universities, the main purpose of the study is to further understand the role and function of the University Church in a contemporary Swedish context. Three themes emerging from the initial step of the thematic analysis were chosen for further analysis: (1) a secularized church?, (2) provocation and (3) reasons to seek out the University Church. The themes were then highlighted by two theoretical perspectives: Mark Chaves’ theory of internal secularization and a theoretical framework developed by Anders Bäckström with the aim to explain the role of the church as a welfare agent in Sweden. The study shows that the University Church is portrayed as both an ambiguous and complex organization. On one hand, the material shows that the University Church is expected to serve as one student welfare provider among several others on campus. On the other hand, the University Church is blamed for enforcing the dominating Christian hegemony and thus excluding students belonging to other faith traditions. On a macro level, the study shows that the University Church’s intentions do not always correlate with the expected role of the church expressed by critics. Consequently, the University Church seems to struggle with finding its role, much like the Church of Sweden has done since the disestablishment in 2000. On a meso level, secularization of religious authorities was noticeable in the material as university chaplains are depicted spending a majority of their time on providing student welfare. However, no general decrease in the religiosity of the overall church organization could be confirmed in the study. In conclusion, the study shows that the potential secularized nature of the University Church is not necessarily perceived as negative by students. Instead, the University Church has the potential to become a hybrid institution, bridging the gap between the religious and the secular sphere at Swedish universities.

The rapid expansion of university places in Hong Kong between the late 1980s and the middle of 1990s has brought about a number of changes to the local higher education scene. Primary among these changes is the increased choice of university education for students. Along with the widened choice, new consumer groups and a more competitive market environment are created. Consequently higher educational institutions have to place more emphasis on promoting and marketing their own programmes and courses. It appears that a wide array of student recruitment activities take place without a systematic analysis of the factors affecting student university choice. The lack of local research on university choice suggests that researching into this area to examine students' decision-making process would be worthwhile. This study presents the findings of a questionnaire survey of 1,684 first-year undergraduate entrants to a university in Hong Kong. Two sets of data were collected: first, the importance of twenty-eight identified factors in affecting student university choice; second, the students' rating of the University on these factors. The study aims to identify the influential factors in student university choice, and measure the strengths and weaknesses of the surveyed University against these factors.

Streszczenie:
It is still unresolved whether individuals with dyslexia suffer non-verbal auditory processing deficits that may explain their phonological problems. Many studies have shown that dyslexic individuals are poor at discriminating pure tones, and this deficit has been attributed to impaired rapid auditory processing. In order to investigate the temporal properties of auditory processing in dyslexia, I have therefore studied the pure tone discrimination abilities of dyslexics, and then analysed the effects of varying interstimulus interval, the amount of frequency difference, and the effect of adding distractor tones during the interstimulus interval. In an investigation of dyslexic individuals’ ability to remember sequences of tones or digits (tonal and digit recognition memory), Rose and Rosner (2005) found that their results were affected by the education their subjects had received. The university educated dyslexics showed little tone discrimination deficit, whereas the dyslexic participants who never attended university showed greater deficits. Therefore, another aim of this thesis was to further study these findings and to identify any auditory processing compensatory mechanisms used by dyslexics who have received higher education. In eight different auditory tasks, the majority of which I programmed, I found strong evidence of non-verbal auditory processing deficits in dyslexic individuals. The comparison of university and non-university groups showed that educational differences had clear effects on many of their abilities, and should not be underestimated. The results showed that: • In general, dyslexics had poorer auditory frequency discrimination than controls. • Dyslexics who did not attend university had lower performance on almost all the auditory tests than the university dyslexic or control groups. • Unexpectedly, university educated dyslexics were less distracted by interrupting tones during frequency discrimination than university educated controls. • In a tone sequence memory task, the university educated dyslexics compensated in their performance to a level not much below that of the university educated controls, and above the controls who did not go to university. • The frequency recognition tasks positively correlated with literacy abilities, and were independent of general intelligence. The strongest correlations were in the non-university dyslexic group. The implications of these results are that not only do dyslexic individuals suffer from a low level, non-linguistic, auditory processing deficit, but those who do not get to university are less able to compensate for these difficulties. It is impossible to say if the higher performance in university educated dyslexics was due to compensation, or if their presence at university was due to a lack of these deficits in the first place. Nevertheless, since university educated dyslexics were better at resisting distractions this may underlie their ability to compensate. These findings could facilitate the creation of new teaching methods to support the development of dyslexics’ compensatory skills and new non-linguistic diagnostic aids. These would help with identifying dyslexia in second languages and enable earlier testing and identification, before reading failure exerts its inevitable negative effects on children’s self-confidence, happiness and future academic potential.

A Universidade J.F. ABSTRACT: The present thesis aims to analyse how social and policy issues influence access conditions to private universities in Japan. The case study is the strategy adopted to explore the implementation policy under social, political and academic factors in Japanese context. J.F. Oberlin University was the case chosen to achieve this goal. Those factors were at completely different level although with enormous influences in Japanese higher education access, moreover they were dramatically connected and clearly associate with that context. Japanese society, history, economy, tradition and develop have been always significant influences in Japanese higher education context. The two main factors at policy level were the deregulation process from central governmental control to local, regional and institutional power under Nakasone cabinet and afterward the privatization of public institutions and increase autonomy of private institutions under Koizumi cabinet. Social changes were represented by the decreasing high school graduate population, the wide variety of the new applicants and the lack of trust in tertiary education. Both stage demanded to policy-makers and institutions leaders to face serious problems at national level. The academic concern was dealt by the institutions with wide freedom and strong responsibility. The large Japanese system (basically private institution) faces a strong competition to attract enough and well qualify students. Therefore, institutions need to achieve their best admission policy procedures in order to assure, simultaneously, quality and a successful enrolment for its existence and a booming future. Nevertheless, in order to develop a success admission process, institutions have to consider several hurdles and facilitate. The specific and unique character of each institution would be an extremely important factor to characterize and distinguish them. In the tough competition process institutions need to improve and increase their prestige. The efficiency to measure the wide variety rank of student skills, motivations and backgrounds is an important process in order to build up a future and successful institution.

Streszczenie:
Although intercultural scholars examine the differences in cultural values, beliefs, and attitudes between the U.S. and China, few specifically have studied cultural differences between U.S. and Chinese university classrooms. This study examines behavioral differences exhibited by U.S. teachers in U.S. university classrooms and Chinese teachers in Chinese university classrooms. This research addresses three areas of significance. First, Chinese students studying in the U.S. who read this thesis may be better able to cope with the U.S. educational system and communicate more effectively with both U.S. students and teachers. Second, this research may help U.S. university teachers to better understand the Chinese culture and Chinese students. Third, this research may increase U.S. teachers' awareness of and sensitivity to the increasingly multicultural classroom environment in the U.S. Three male university teachers in the U.S. and three male university teachers in China were observed and videotaped in this study. The data analysis was guided by categories establish by Gudykunst (1988), Hofstede (1986), and Lieberman (1993) as behavioral indicators of cultural styles. Several interesting findings occurred among overall descriptive observation and qualitative accounts of observations. First, a powerful trend of behavioral differences exhibited in the classroom by U.S. university teachers and Chinese university teachers was found. The findings in this search strongly support findings by Gudykunst (1988), Hofstede (1986), and Lieberman (1993) that U.S. university teachers exhibited far more individualist/direct communication styles and small power distance/personal communication styles than Chinese teachers, while Chinese teachers exhibited more collectivist/indirect communication styles and large power distance/contextual communication styles than U.S. teachers. Second, the results of this research provide valuable insights for both U.S. university teachers and Chinese university teachers; that is, culture reflects teachers' and students' values, assumptions, and behaviors. U.S. culture reflects values, assumptions, and behaviors, such as individualism, direct communication styles, small power distance, and personal communication styles. However, Chinese culture reflects collectivism, indirect communication styles, large power distance, and contextual communication styles.

That is why spaces and cleaning plays a big role in student study results in university. Therefore the cleaning in Malmö University plays a big role in the work of Malmö University Facility Service to create a high quality study environment. Today the cleaning is performed by two contractors, one is an external actor and the other one i part of the Malmö University organization. The purpose of the study is to evaluate the student’s perception of differences in quality of the cleaning operators at Malmö University with the basis of the report Utvärdering av lokalvårdsorganisationen. The evaluation is to be seen as an quality parameter and complement to the existing evaluation of the difference in cost in contracting the two cleaningoperators in the report. The collected information from the study is based on a survey and interview with students in the four university buildings Niagara, Gäddan, Orkanen and Hälsa & Samhälle at Malmö University. The result in this study shows that the cleaning at the Malmö University premises is perceived as both important to the students and to be of an high and even quality today. However the students are mistaking many of the building qualities like age and condition for the technical quality of the performed cleaning that is performed. The small differences thatcan be noted is perceived quality of the cleaning relates to the condition and character of the building rather than the quality in performance of the cleaning operator. The perceived quality of the premises and the effect on study result thereby has a stronger connection between new and airy spaces rather than to higher cost for cleaning operation.

This study argues that the provision of library services in Kenyan public universities is characterised by extremely inadequate resources in terms of funds, information materials, equipment and staff. Private university libraries experience these problems albeit to a lesser degree. Although there is widespread opinion among students, lecturers as well as university administrators that university libraries play a critical role in the teaching, research, and learning activities, there is also awareness that university libraries in Kenya, especially those in public universities are not effectively providing services which has limited their role in research and learning in the university. Finally, modern information and communication technology is being incorporated in the management of university libraries in Kenya. However, this trend has been hindered by first, lack of funds to purchase equipment such as computers and set up networks, secondly by lack of skilled personnel in information technology, and finally by poor telecommunications infrastructure in the country. There is therefore need for adoption of strategic planning in all areas of library management and to remain viable sources of information, university libraries in Kenya have to make use modern information and communication technology. This will enable university libraries to facilitate better access to local and global information for example through electronic and internet media.

All universities have the capacity to embrace, embed or ignore sustainable development. Looking across the sector and reflecting on the past seven years and my own institutional experiences, the key finding is that change for campus and curriculum-based sustainability is clearly possible but unpredictable. For many years my own institution (University of Bradford) struggled to make progress in a number of key aspects of `campus greening¿ including recycling, green build, energy management, green travel, fair trade etc. It employed its first environmental manager as recently as 2003. Up until 2007, education for sustainable development (ESD) was largely found in one small academic department. Now, as this paper describes, it is a central feature of the learning and teaching strategy for the university and an overall institutional objective.

The University Square Development Proposal (USDP) explores the redevelopment of the underutilized University Square site (the Site) in the City of San Luis Obispo (the City.) The Sites proximity to California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly), a university with significant student housing needs, makes it an ideal location for student housing. The City has also expressed interest in the Site, having identified it in the General Plan Land Use and Circulation Element (LUCE) update as a “Special Planning Area”. The LUCE proposes a new mixed-use typology on the Site that may include a mixture of multi-family housing, retail services, entertainment, and recreation. The USDP is an early take on redevelopment of the Site, and provides a development option that accommodates both the objectives of Cal Poly, by providing student housing, and the City, by proposing a mixed-use development typology. To this end, the USDP includes a site assessment, project program, design vision, and financial analysis. The USDP concludes with project evaluations and lessons learned.

This dissertation examines the impact of board of director characteristics and policies on nonprofit performance. Using data collected through a survey of nonprofit colleges and universities, I provide evidence that specific board member characteristics and board monitoring policies are vital in shaping both the financial and nonfinancial success of nonprofit institutions of higher education. Related to board characteristics, results indicate that bigger boards with more major donors are consistently associated with better performing organizations, confirming my board contribution hypothesis. These results are in addition to noteworthy relationships between nonprofit success and the number of meetings held by an organization as well as the impact of recruiting board members who serve on other nonprofit boards. In terms of board monitoring, findings confirm regulatory and advisory recommendations that the use of a conflict of interest policy, disclosure of business relationships, nominating and compensation committees are important aspects of board development in addition to longer board terms. These relationships confirm all three monitoring hypotheses, suggesting that board disclosures, organization, and independence all have an important impact on success when it is measured as organizational efficiency, one of the most studied and relied upon measures of performance in the nonprofit sector. This work makes important, initial forays into the relationships between board of director qualities and nonprofit performance. Although limited by the relatively small sample of colleges and universities, given the lack of public data available related to nonprofit boards, this study is unique in the ability to analyze nonprofit boards with both financial and nonfinancial performance measures.

The research focuses on an auto-ethnographic case study of the creation of a new university specialising in creativity in Singapore between 2003 and 2005. The author is the President and CEO of that institution and the Vice Chancellor designate of the University of the Arts Singapore (UARTS@). Through the personal application of knowledge and documentary research, the context for the study is explored, together with the conceptual framework within which it will operate. Some of the social, economic and political issues are described, as they relate to the Singapore Education System, drawing direct comparison with the two systems from which that system originated: the United Kingdom and to some degree, Australia. The case study is centred on the evolution of a private institution, but one that is in receipt of public funding, operating directly under the supervision of the Ministry of Education in Singapore. During the period of the study, the institution transits from a polytechnic towards a full university status and the study observes the extent to which the development impacts on the Singapore Higher Education System and how it responds to two major Singapore government objectives: • The Global Schoolhouse Initiative • The Creative Industries Development The case study illustrates a number of specific challenges facing many existing universities as they attempt to reposition themselves in response to mission convergence.

The study aims to examine the factors that influenced the international students when selecting Karlstad University as an institution. The study also contains a secondary aim which is to examine how the international students evaluate their experiences in Karlstad. Further the study is built upon four research questions, where the three first research questions can be referred to the main aim whereas the fourh research question can be referred to the secondary aim. The main aim is by the research questions divided into a three step process, the factor that influnced the international students to study abroad, to study in Sweden and to study at Karlstad University. The fourth research question which concerns the secondary aim is about how the international students evaluate their stay in Karlstad.

The enquiry has been made with help of a questionnaire, which 98 of the international students at Karlstad University answered. The study showed that factors that influenced the international students to study abroad was to gain better understanding of the foreign language and the foreign culture. The students were also influenced by the student life and the life experiences that they would gain by studying abroad. They also stated that the value of their resume would be higher because of these studies. Factors that influenced the students to study in Sweden was i.a the factor of knowledge and awareness. A majority found the knowledge of Sweden, the reputations of the institution quality, the awareness of the quality of the education as influencing factors. The students also found it easy to obtain information about Sweden, which is very good since this factor is a great contribution to knowledge and awareness. The answers showed that a small majority of the students were influenced by low fees and by recommendations from authorized representatives. The students were influenced by low crime and low racial discrimination factors, such as factors of clean environment and an exiting place to live in. The influencing factors of studying at Karlstad University were the reputation for quality, the reputation of institution staff, the broad range of courses and programs and the the good facilities. However many of the students stated that they choose Karlstad University because of the agreements between Karlstad University and the home University. As the students were asked to evaluate their stay in Karlstad, they seemd to be satisfied with the quality of education, the facilities, the student accomodations, the students life and Karlstad as a city.

Aim: The aim of the study is to investigate the impact of national culture on female’s career advancement and different barriers that females may confront in University of Gävle and GuizhouUniversity   Method: Both qualitative and quantitative methods are employed in the current study. Qualitative data is collected by sixteen interviews including ten participants from University of Gävle and six participants from GuizhouUniversity. And the quantitative data is collected by one hundred questionnaires in the two universities.   Result and Conclusions: The study finds out that Hofstede’s six cultural dimensions: power distance, collectivism vs. individualism, uncertainty avoidance, masculinity vs. femininity, long-term orientation vs. short-term orientation and indulgence vs. restraint could affect female’s career advancement in varying degree in which power distance and masculinity vs. femininity differentiate the two universities to a large extent. Moreover, the study shows gender stereotyping, lack of networking, and lack of mentorship are most obvious barriers for female’s career advancement while the impact of glass ceiling, opportunities and self-confidence is relatively.   Suggestion for further studies: Future studies could take more cultural models into consideration. Bigger samples in two countries should be collected to view a whole picture of female’s situation in Swedish and Chinese tertiary education field.   Contribution of the thesis: The model of relationship between national culture and female’s career advancement provides a framework for the further studies relating to female’s under-representation in tertiary field. Barriers identified by the authors remind the universities to improve their organizational management.

Article 21 of the University Act states that faculty evaluation at university level should cover teaching, research, guidance provision, service provision, etc. Based on the principle of university autonomy, the Ministry of Education allows individual universities to set their own rules for faculty evaluation, and to decide which methods should be used, what items and content should be covered, what weightings should be employed, etc.; this has created a situation where there is considerable variation in the standards applied to faculty evaluation. The implementation of faculty evaluation can lead to changes in the campus environment, and can be seen as constituting a threat to faculty members; the results of faculty evaluation also affect the way universities manage their faculty “manpower.” This study seeks to determine whether faculty evaluation is in fact able to reflect faculty achievements and performance and create real benefits for universities. The goal of the present study is to undertake empirical analysis of the S university actual results obtained in faculty evaluation, so as to gauge how effective faculty evaluation is in reality. It is anticipated that the results obtained in this analysis can provide a useful reference for improving faculty evaluation; a number of suggestions are made as to how such improvement could be carried out. The study makes use of the independent samples t-test and one-way ANOVA analysis. The first step is to analyze the relationship between faculty members’ personal background and their faculty evaluation results and weighting. The study then proceeds to explore, from the faculty members’ perspective, the impact of the individual dimensional weightings and special evaluation indicators on faculty members’ evaluation results. The following conclusions are reached: 1. Faculty member background variables (including gender, age, department, and years of service) have a significant impact on faculty members’ evaluation results. 2. Faculty member background variables (including gender, age, department, and years of service) have a significant impact on the dimensional weightings in faculty evaluation. 3. The distribution of the four dimensional weightings (teaching, research, administrative service, and guidance provision) is correlated with the evaluation results. 4. The special evaluation indicators relating to university performance, including “teaching performance feedback,” “receipt of teaching awards,” “simultaneous holding of administrative posts,” “undergoing training in teaching methods,” “publications,” “taking on of special projects,” “provision of specialist services,” etc., are correlated with the results obtained in the individual dimensions of faculty evaluation.
