Streszczenie:
Purpose The purpose of this study is to improve the utilization of walk-in tutors at the University of Dayton. Design/methodology/approach This paper discusses the application of mixed methods participatory action research with the use of the lean six sigma (LSS) define-measure-analyze-improve-control (DMAIC) methodology combined with discrete event simulation to improve the tutoring processes at the University of Dayton. Findings The impact of these improvements provided a great balance between tutor utilization and student wait time, and as a result, an increase in pay was negotiated for tutors. Additionally, two schools within the University, Engineering and Business, have seen the value of the tutoring for their students and have provided additional financial support for tutoring services. Specifically, these schools now have dedicated by-appointment tutors for their students. Originality/value Incorporating simulation within the LSS methodology provides a “prototype” simulation of the potential solutions prior to changing the process in the real world. This approach can minimize the risk of implementing solutions that are costly or ineffective. The improvement of increased tutor pay helped to demonstrate the university’s commitment to tutors and tutoring. Through continuous improvement efforts, the tutoring department has tripled the number of courses that they support through these enhanced relationships, improved utilization and the overall culture and work environment. The LSS methodology and tools combined with discrete event simulation can be used as a guide for improving other repetitive processes within the university.

This article is dedicated to the use of the project method in musical and regional studies of the university students. The research was based on years of experience of teachers and students of the Federal State Budgetary Educational Institution of Higher Education "Vologda State University". Specifically, two types of student projects carried out in the course of studying the discipline "Musical culture of the Vologda region" were analysed: firstly, group projects related to the search for materials about musical life in periodicals of previous years, and secondly, individual projects based on verbal history methods. On the one hand, students’ projects are aimed at the development of the necessary professional competencies, and on the other hand, they contribute to the gradual filling of substantial gaps in the musical history of Vologda. Similarities are identified between the project method and the concept of learning by doing where each student is positioned as an active and creative subject of study. In addition, this research highlights a significant educational potential of music and local history work.

In 2014, the Marian Library at the University of Dayton completed a long overdue revision of its collection development policy. The new document more clearly defined the scope of the library’s collections, and was intended to guide new acquisition decisions. However, this new document had the unexpected benefit of providing a framework for deselection projects that enabled preservation and improved access to the collections. This paper will discuss and analyze two of these projects, and demonstrate how the revised collection development policy laid the foundation for successful deselection outcomes. In the first case study, legacy collections of genre-based ephemera were heavily weeded to remove photocopies, internet printouts, duplicates, and other out-of-scope materials. Both the challenges and benefits of weeding legacy reference files will be discussed. The second case study will examine a comprehensive review of the library’s inactive periodical holdings, consisting of over five hundred titles that were largely uncatalogued. Removing titles outside of the library’s collection scope transformed the collection into a manageable project for the cataloging staff to tackle. This formerly hidden collection, including rare periodicals not found elsewhere in the United States, is now in the process of being cataloged. Both projects transformed local practices and improved utilization of the library’s limited resources in staffing, time, space, and funding. Faced with legacy practices that compromised physical and intellectual control of materials, librarians leveraged a well-defined collection development policy to undertake two successful deselection projects. The policy was used to justify and guide deselection, ultimately improving both preservation and access.

After the fall of east orientated political system and coming of the pluralistic system in the Yugoslav federation, the nationalisms that claimed to dominate Yugoslavia, such as Serbian, Croatian and Slovenian nationalism came to the surface, which also led to the overthrow of Yugoslavia. Following the abolition of Kosovo's limited autonomy of 1974, in March 1989, the Milosevic Serb regime during the 1990s imposed violent measures in all Kosovo institutions by removing Albanian workers from their jobs. Thus, Kosovo, Albanians were expelled collectively from the education process in the Albanian language, and left school and university facilities. Efforts to reach an agreement between Albanians and Serbian representatives for education during 1992 were unsuccessful. In these difficult contexts, the parallel education system of Kosovo Albanians was organized. In these difficult circumstances, students and Albanian students continued learning outside school facilities. After ignoring the Kosovo problem in the peace agreement reached in Dayton for Bosnia, the dissatisfaction with the peace policy led by Dr. Ibrahim Rugova grew all over Kosovo. In these circumstances, professors and students with vision began to talk about the organization of peaceful protests against the Serbian regime. After a long process, a new student movement took place at the University of Prishtina, which marks the beginning of the great protest on 1 October 1997. In this paper, we analyse the attitudes of international diplomacy with a special emphasis on the West in relation to this movement following the 1 October 1997 peace protests in Kosovo.

The paper examines the schooling of foreign students, holders of the scholarships awarded by the Ministry of Education of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes/Yugoslavia, at the University of Belgrade between the two World Wars. The first competitions were opened mid 1920s, with those countries which aided the schooling of Yugoslav students at their respective universities being eligible to apply. During the 1930s student exchange continued, in an apparently more extensive and organized manner, only to be extended at the end of the period under review to include countries with which the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, in accordance with the change of foreign policy orientation, established close political and economic relations. Thus, in the beginning, students from France, Great Britain, Czechoslovakia and Poland came to study in Belgrade, whereas, during the years before World War II, students also came from Turkey, Germany and Italy. Scholarship holders most often worked on developing their knowledge of Serbo-Croatian-Slovenian, studied literature and Yugoslav culture in general. Many of them chose to study history, whether as part of their undergraduate or specialist studies. They are the particular focus of this study. The paper is based on unpublished archival sources, periodicals and relevant historiographic literature.

AbstractUsing the example of the contacts between The Netherlands and the university theologian and educationalist from Heidelberg, F. H. C. Schwarz (1766-1837), this article demonstrates that intensive personal academic exchange existed already in the early 19th century: It included the reading of scientific literature in foreign languages, book reviews in special periodicals, translation projects, visits across borders, membership of academic societies, scholarships for foreign students and sometimes even offers of chairmanships to scientists of other nations. Even though international research projects were not known at the time, academic contacts did exist and were mostly achieved through correspondence – despite the limitations – as well as travel.

This chapter draws upon nine months of qualitative, netographic (Kozinets, 2010) research conducted both online and in face-to-face contexts on college student use of Facebook and explores the impact this online platform has on students by studying behaviors, experiences, and perspectives of undergraduate students at the University of Dayton in Dayton, Ohio. The primary question guiding this research is: How do college students use Facebook to fulfill social needs in the creation and maintenance of community while attending college? The data consists of an analysis of transcribed interviews, email communications, and the interactive content of student Facebook users’ Facebook walls. The results indicate that students use Facebook to undertake particular tasks and toward particular ends. These include, but are not limited to: fostering and maintaining community, nurturing relationships, making public statements and protecting privacy, establishing a personal identity, building social capital, establishing cultural competency, coping, and critiquing their peers and campus.

Study abroad experiences can and should be inherently two-fold. Before, during, and after the study abroad commitment, students experience and live both their curricular content as well as their culturally diverse experiences. In the Department of Teacher Education at the University of Dayton, our mission is to engage students in experiences that will support their ability to be reflective practitioners in a diverse society. This chapter will describe the development of a study abroad program designed to assist preservice teachers in developing and utilizing these skills and dispositions in a global setting. The study abroad experience required courses from both teacher education and general education content. An overarching goal of our program was to facilitate students' ability to utilize a multicultural lens both in their study abroad experience and throughout their lives. This chapter will describe how three professors integrated cross-curricular projects grounded in children's and young adult literature, historical literacy, and understanding diverse populations.

This chapter discusses changes in the legal profession in the second half of the nineteenth century, covering the rise of the law school, the literature of the law, and legal periodicals and casebooks. No state in the nineteenth century made a law degree, or a college degree, a prerequisite for admission to the bar. Many lawyers, however, even in the 1850s, did go to college, and more and more students who could afford it chose law school as well. Indeed, by 1900 it was quite clear that the law schools would come to dominate legal education. After the Civil War, an increasing number of law schools formed some sort of tie with a college or university. More than three-quarters of the schools open and running in the 1890s were of this type.

In the late 1960s, LIFE magazine was one of the most widely read and influential periodicals in the world. Renowned for its photojournalism, the general-interest magazine covered all aspects of American life. The November 21, 1969, edition was no exception. It included a review of what would be The Beatles’ final studio album, a profile of Ohio State University head football coach Woody Hayes, and an advertisement for a commemorative book on that summer’s moon landing. It also featured an article on a little-known University of Chicago psychiatrist, Dr. Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, and her groundbreaking work with terminally ill patients. In an era when public discourse about death and dying was almost non-existent and when many physicians believed that a patient was better off not knowing his or her prognosis, Kübler-Ross was encouraging candid and open conversations with people about their impending deaths. Her innovative approach and courage to challenge the status quo drew the interest of LIFE editor Loudon Wainwright. His captivating story introducing Kübler-Ross and her new book, On Death and Dying, would forever change the national conversation about end-of-life and grief. The article described Kübler-Ross’s seminar teaching clinicians about the experiences of terminally ill patients. Physicians, nurses, chaplains, and medical students watched through a one-way mirror as she interviewed a twenty-two-year-old woman who had been diagnosed just two weeks earlier with leukemia, which at that time was almost always fatal. Large black-and-white pictures of the patient showed a vibrant and beautiful young woman with long hair and a wide smile. She looked nothing like someone close to death, which in some ways was the point. She talked about her diagnosis and understanding that leukemia would almost certainly kill her. Her willingness to openly discuss the prospect of her own death must have been astounding to those observing the interview. Kübler-Ross theorized that people facing their own mortality proceed through five stages prior to their death. In the first stage, the person is unable or unwilling to accept that he or she is going to die (Denial).

Abstract In this paper we review two student design projects executed under a geographically distributed protocol. Our pilot design project occurred at the University of Dayton between the 5th and 14th of July, 2000. We assembled a small group of students into a distributed design team and assigned a rudimentary project via an audio chat session. Most team members were prohibited from face-to-face interaction during the ten-day period. To communicate and share data, they were required to use either the set of collaborative tools installed on each member’s personal computer or a telephone. The second project occurred from January to May 2001, involving students from Ohio University, Ohio Northern University and the University of Dayton. There were no artificial restrictions on the interactions amongst the team members as in the pilot project. However, the distance between the students made collaborating in a distributed fashion a necessity. This paper presents an overview of the design projects and the collaborative tools used, observations about our experiences executing design under this protocol, and future directions for this work.

Once developed, the engineering and business students will continue to work with the community and Grupo Fenix to establish a micro-business for the manufacture and distribution of the device. Although this project will address a particular technical need, the infrastructure and unique partnerships that are being developed and optimized through its facilitation will serve as a model for other projects and programs that will be shared within the University of Dayton and with other universities.

It is common for engineers but rare for engineering students to be asked to work on projects with people whose expertise is in other fields. In an effort to address this shortcoming at the University of Dayton, an interdisciplinary mechatronics class was developed. This lab based course with equal numbers of electrical engineering and mechanical engineering seniors focused on designing, building and controlling electromechanical systems. This paper covers the development of the course and the challenges posed in teaching such a course. The course is centered on the concept of building an autonomous system by integrating a well designed mechanism with a well designed electrical controller. Particular emphasis is placed on the challenge of covering material which is basic and familiar to one set of students while being novel and challenging to another set of students. Additional discussion is included on encouraging cross-disciplinary communication, preventing asymmetrical workloads and stimulating innovation.

Streszczenie:
For any mechanical design project in an industrial setting, computer-aided design (CAD) functions as the cornerstone. Mechanical CAD systems serves as the focal point during conceptualization, design iterations, finalizing design details drawing creation and manufacturing. In most engineering technology programs, CAD, and solid modeling are offered as required courses. However, those courses often stand as “islands” of information. In the university setting, CAD is poorly integrated into the many design problems presented in courses throughout the curriculum. Frequently, students do not gain the experience of using solid models to drive their designs. Too often, their first experience of this real-world design process is “on the job”. Thus, our students are not fully prepared for industrial practice, which is contrary to the mission of engineering technology programs. This paper will present the results of a study that reviewed utilization of solid modeling throughout many baccalaureate mechanical engineering technology (MET) programs. Further, it will present some of the implementation strategies of solid modeling in upper-level, MET courses at the University of Dayton.

The National Library of Romania shares digital resources, providing access to knowledge and cultural heritage, through three online platforms. These are: a) The Traditional Virtual Catalog for the books published before 1993. It is the virtual image of the traditional catalog which is organized alphabetically by author name in the appropriate folders physical drawers. 1,600,000 sheets are structured in 1600 folders, and a folder contains on average 1,000 sheets scanned catalog. Book-to-Book Platform, a crowd-cataloguing tool, provides both search and retrieval of bibliographic information in virtual catalog of books traditionally published before 1993 and the possibility to learn and contribute voluntarily in the development of the catalog by creating associated metadata catalog sheets scanned. Book-to-Book is a collaborative project.Through specialized internships and specialized seminars in National Library of Romania, students from Faculty of Letters are better prepared for integration in labor market, achieving skills and abilities, a good level of professional preparation The platform and database was designed by the students from the Techical University Bucuresti. Accessible at http://bookathon.bibnat.ro/ b) The Online Catalog. The online catalog web component is offered determined by the integrated library system, Aleph and contains bibliographic informations about documents in the library collections since 1993: books, periodicals, multimedia documents, periodical articles culture. In the online catalog, defined by logical databases, The doctoral theses Referential, which provides access to online content thereof (by digitizing paper or archiving electronic content of CD attached by author) and digital library for blind (project Sound of pages) that disabled users have access to requested digitized works. Accessible http://alephnew.bibnat.ro:8991/F . c) The National Digital Library Started in 2009, it was conducted on dedicated library software, Digitool. It is comprised of digital collections created by digitizing special collections of documents in the National Library of Romania, organized by themes or after events. Currently includes the following collections: Historical Archive, Incunabula, Old Romanian books and bibliophile, Potographs of personalities, romanian illustrated postcards, picture postcards, manuscripts, old maps, musical scores, albums with engravings, exlibris, japanese prints, drawings Romanian etc. These collections are the result of research on copyright of items. The metadata and the thumbnails of the digital collections was harvested via OAI-PMH protocol and published in Europeana, keeping the source of the original URL and a digital objects, after a careful analysis of the metadata and a data migration process. Accessible at http://digitool.bibnat.ro/R . Databases have grown steadily and have become e-learning tools for some categories of users. The systems provide open resources, learning and navigating tutorials and contribute to the knowledgeable and creative society.
