Streszczenie:

In this dissertation, I analyzing the invagination of slavery and madness as constitutive of the political, medical, economic, legal and literary institutions of the United States. In my introduction, I discuss my previous project concerning all black mental institutions that emerged in the American South after Reconstruction. My first chapter, "Haunting Asylums: Madness, Slavery and the Archive," addresses my difficulties with the fragmented records of the racially segregated mental asylums and how figurations of the ghost or the inhuman failed to provide me with a salvific moment. In Chapter 2, "Compounds of Madness and Race: Governing Species, Disease and Sexuality in the Early Republic," I map the epistemic ground of race, mind and nation in the Revolutionary-era United States. My third chapter, "Worse than Useless, Too Much Sense: Enslaved Insanity in Plantations, Courtrooms and Asylums" is the culmination of previous two, where I trace the admission and treatment records of a sixteen-year-old slave interned in a mental asylum to the discourses and institutions surrounding the internal slave trade. I conclude by discussing two deaths separated by two centuries but connected by the violent conjunction of antiblackness and madness.

Streszczenie:
Over the past 30 years there has been an increase in socioeconomic inequities between Black and White persons in the United States. Some research suggests that political ideology, which in turn impacts political competition levels, may at least partially explain these disparities, though the body of academic literature in this area is sparse. Little is known about how Black political ideology is formed by perceptions of inequality. The purpose of this study was to examine the phenomenon of Black political ideology, political competition, and socioeconomic status to determine how political competition relates to social inequities between Blacks and Whites. The theoretical framework of the study was Lockean social contract theory. The overarching question guiding this study explored how competition could better defend natural rights to reduce social disparities and the obligations of government to equally protect, similarly to the protections of government historically extended to Whites. Multiple and multivariate regression models were developed using data from the 2010 General Social Survey, the 2010 American Community Survey, and the presidential election results of 2008. Results showed no significant relationship between Black beliefs of inequality with Black political ideology and that high political competition rates might contribute to the increasing Black/White socioeconomic gaps. Contrary to economic competition models developed through Locke's social contract, there was no evidence that political competition reduces socioeconomic inequities between Blacks and Whites. The implications for positive social change include education of policy makers that higher political competition rates in their states contribute to lower socioeconomic outcomes for Blacks.

In recent years, there has been substantial interest in understanding urban systems at the national and global scales: what are the economic and social ties that link cities together, and what is the network structure formed by such ties? At the same time, human capital accumulation is increasingly seen as a, primary driver of regional economic growth. Domestic migration patterns have the potential to illuminate the social and economic connections among cities, while also highlighting economically significant flows of human capital. In this thesis I examine the US city system through the lens of gross migration flows, taking advantage of unusually complete data on county-to-county migration compiled annually by the IRS. I compare the observed flows to those predicted by the radiation model. Finding most notably that there are far more long-distance migrants than would be predicted based on the spatial distribution of population alone. I then use reciprocal migration patterns to construct a migration network connecting metro areas in the United States. I utilize current-flow centrality measures to identify the most prominent nodes in this weighted network. Additionally, I use repeated applications of the Louvain community detection algorithm to identify reasonably robust communities within the migration network. These exhibit a striking degree of spatial contiguity.

Streszczenie:
Pluralism, the dominant theory in citizen involvement in the United States Forest Service since the 1950s, has prolonged the process of determining the public interest by promoting the use of appeals and lawsuits. The advent of more collaborative public involvement strategies in the past fifteen years offers the opportunity to assess whether participatory democracy offers a better paradigm for determining the public interest. This research focused on four cases of reported successful collaboration in Region One of the Forest Service and involved in-person interviews with 17 Forest Service officials and 24 citizen and interest group leaders. The researcher translated pluralist and participatory democracy paradigms into characteristic human actions and behavior in the setting of Forest Service public involvement, then analyzed reported actions and behaviors accordingly. Interviewees were asked to choose between two contrasting descriptions of group culture to characterize interactions with the Forest Service, one drawn from the rational choice model in the pluralist paradigm, the other from collaborative literature in the participatory democracy paradigm. Collaboration was rejected as a term for analysis because it lacked specific definition among both Forest Service and public interviewees. Instead, the researcher analyzed the cases using characteristics of participatory democracy drawn from civic republican theorists that also encompassed the characteristics contained in textbook descriptions of collaboration. Two of the cases had all characteristics and provided empirical examples of participatory democracy at work. Another of the cases used stakeholder negotiation that contained some of the aspects of participatory democracy, but lacked the characteristics of being voluntary and of fostering a sense of community. The last case used informed consent and was found to be a combination of participatory culture and synoptic administration. Based on these cases, the researcher concluded that public involvement that uses a participatory democracy paradigm has the potential to increase public trust in the Forest Service and to minimize appeals and lawsuits by creating strong diverse support for Forest Service decisions. The research also examined characteristics of the leadership in the cases and found trust and integrity to be essential to creating a participatory democracy paradigm.

Streszczenie:
It is estimated that by 2025 the Asian population in the United States will be over 40 million; it will represent nearly 10% of the total U.S. population. Currently Chinese immigrants are the largest Asian group and constitute 22.6% of all Asian immigrants. With the Chinese immigrant population growing steadily, the Chinese elderly population will increase in the future. Historically, "Hsiao" (filial piety in English), rooted in Confucianism, teaches Chinese people to pay respect to living parents and provides rules for culturally defined intergenerational relationships and family caregiving, and putting family needs above individual interests. Among the Chinese, family caregiving is perceived as a duty, obligation, responsibility, and cultural virtue. The purpose of the study was to test a theoretical model specifying how factors including subjective beliefs of traditional filial obligation, subjective feelings about role requirements, perceived burdens, perceived rewards and use of coping affect Chinese caregivers' health in the United States. The aim of this study was to understand how caregivers' cultural background and the appraisal of family caregiving affect caregivers' well-being. Data from 137 caregivers were used to describe sample profile and for model testing. The original model failed to explain the data adequately. Two revised models were developed. Results suggest that data fit better with physical health, as indicated by CFI = .91 and the χ²/df ratio = 2.9, than mental health model, as indicated by CFI = .90 and the χ²/df ratio = 3.5. Findings suggest caregivers' beliefs of traditional filial obligation is a primary predictor for caregivers' physical health. Caregivers' subjective beliefs of traditional filial obligation affect caregivers' physical health not only directly but also indirectly. Implications for nursing research, practice, education and theory construction, and policy making were addressed. Limitations and recommendations for research design and interpretation of model fit were described. Further studies are needed to compare differences in cultural influences among different ethnic groups, identify effective coping style and test the effect of intervention caregivers' health.

Seney, Bruce Everett. "Portraying the Canada-United States relationship in social studies texts". Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1986. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/26606.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
The relationship between Canada and the United States is the focus of many accounts in Canadian social studies textbooks. A variety of topics highlighting different themes of the relationship are exhibited in numerous secondary school textbooks. However, it is postulated the accounts of Canada's relations with the United States are singular thematic in format and nation-centric in approach. The study develops a framework of analysis that first, enables a binary decision of the overall prevalence of a singular thematic format or a multiplictic approach pertaining to textbooks. The term multiplictic refers to the multiplicity of points of view about a topic of study. The approach presents a number of different themes that helps explain the complexity of the relationship. A multiplictic method would utilize diverse viewpoints about issues representative of the relationship. A second feature of the framework is that it provides a more detailed assessment of the perspective evident in five issue areas central to the relationship. To assess each issue area as being nation-centric or multiplictic, three determinants are used to interpret how the Canada-United States relationship is portrayed. The determinants used to analyse the single or multiple themes are: the existence of a nation-centric perspective; the usage of rhetoric describing the relationship; and the preponderance of singular thematic judgments. Profiles of five issue areas that represent the Canada-United States relationship are evaluated in fifteen Canadian social studies textbooks. The five issue areas are: cultural issues, defence issues, environmental issues, foreign ownership issues, and trade issues. Results of the study indicate that fifty-two of the fifty-seven profiles analysed have a tendency of being singular thematic and nation-centric in perspective. Also, nine of the fifteen textbooks examined show a tendency to be negative in their description of the Canada-United States relationship. These findings suggest that portrayals of the Canada-United States relationship in textbooks fosters an autarkist mentality. Such a perception of Canada's relationship with the United States would appear to focus on Canadian survival in a global context instead of enhancing student understanding of internationally-oriented issues. The exploratory study reveals an underlying trend in textbooks concerned with the Canada-United States relationship that is significant to a variety of audiences including scholars and educators interested in the study and teaching of Canadian-American relations and publishers responsible for developing appropriate classroom materials.

Higher education has undergone significant change as universities have sought to respond to government reforms in a period of globalisation. One major reform that globalisation has introduced is the reduction in state funding for higher education. Universities have turned to other resources to provide funding and one of these is the recruitment of international students. The focus of this thesis is on contrasting the internationalisation policies of two nations, Australia and the United States, by analysing published policies, statistics and carrying out interviews on two campuses. Two universities, one in Australia and the other in the United States, served as case studies to examine the strategies used to implement these policies. Approximately 100 participants were interviewed, including administrators and faculty members, international and domestic students. Each university featured internationalisation as a goal in its mission statement. By integrating intercultural and global dimensions into the teaching, research and service functions of a university, internationalisation encompasses a multitude of activities that provide an educational experience. While administrators generally stated that the implementation of strategic plans to achieve international goals had been successful, many faculty members, domestic and international students were of the view that international goals were yet to be realised. These contrasting discourses revealed that each university was falling short of achieving its internationalisation goals. Faculty members and domestic and international students expressed dissatisfaction about cultural insensitivity, lack of adequate services that offered housing and emotional/social support, and language barriers. At the same time, each university was achieving some of its internationalisation goals. In conclusion, strategies are suggested that might improve the implementation of internationalisation at both universities.

Streszczenie:

Foster care efficacy in the United States is examined in an analytical review of the literature. The question researched was whether or not the foster care placement system in the United States is conducive to the developmental needs of children with high risk factors. Participants included populations of children in foster care, foster parents, and children who had matured out of foster care, throughout the United States. The relating topics of the data analysis within the literature review are: developmental theory, stability, outcomes, continuing education, and foster parent training. Research suggests that many children in foster care, or children who are entering foster care settings, are diagnosed with a psychiatric illness. Support and emotional stability within a foster home for children was shown to have a significant correlation as to if there would be positive future outcomes. The KEEP program, (Keeping Foster Parents Trained and Supported), was found to be effective in correlation with not how often it is used, but with how well the caregiver understands how to implement the intervention. Further research into the impact of continuing training of foster parents after initial licensing, and the impact foster homes lacking in foster parent support pertaining to schoolwork, extracurricular activities and long-term educational goals , is suggested.

Wilderness preservation and access to nature has been used as a method of reinforcing racial hierarchy and promoting and advancing White agendas. Environmental heroes like John Muir promoted racist viewpoints toward others through a vision of wilderness that was exclusive and inaccessible. National Parks and other wilderness areas displaced the original inhabitants of the land now are representative of nature as a place of exclusion. In order to have success with their environmental goals, White environmentalists need to recognize and account for the racism, imperialism, and nationalism, both intentional and unintentional, that has harmed their movement.

Jadallah, Dina. "United States Economic Aid: Imperfect Hegemony in Egypt". Diss., The University of Arizona, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/314671.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
Even though aid is a cornerstone of the Egyptian-American relationship, there is little research about economic aid's role in achieving US objectives, especially in producing policy alignment that would normalize Israel. Likewise, an under-studied derivative question is how the stipulation to maintain peace with Israel affected the (1) economic and structural processes of aligning Egypt with the American vision of `market-democracy' and (2) Egyptian critical assessments of the (non-military) effects associated with alignment into the American orbit? I argue that a reforming and democratizing narrative was used to transform Egypt into a stable "market-democracy" whose prosperity entailed pursuit of a "warm" peace. The transformation depended upon a dual strategy, combining the targeting of "natural allies" among a complicit elite as well as on privatization to align businesses, territories, civil organizations, and institutions or segments therein with American interests. The strategy's success in achieving alignment was also its weakness. Dependence on an autocratic elite for the implementation of reforms had the counter-effects of facilitating corruption and of reducing regime incentives to expand its constituencies of support beyond direct beneficiaries of the neoliberal privatizing changes. Instead of debate and engagement with opposing views to build new alliances, the strategy superseded and avoided sites of opposition. Therefore, contrary to the original aim of aid provision, the peace remained cold while its normalization dimensions became discursive triggers used as prisms with which to judge aid, the neoliberal reformist agenda, as well as normalization. The new partnerships provoked the production of competing conceptualizations of the proper relationship between the state and its citizens, conveyed in legal and constitutional re-definitions and re-distributions of rights and duties, as well as in divergent nationalist visions for Egypt's future. These competing ideas ranged between a nationalism that is globalizing, free-market, US- and regime-supported and another vision that is traditional, historically-informed, and socio-culturally-sensitive. Normalization's connection with aid had the counter-theoretical effect of reducing aid's ability to engender Gramscian hegemony. The US strategy of targeting allies and of privatization to effect normalization could not overcome extant socio-political forces whose discourses charged that aid produced anything but subordination (taba'iyya) - which differed significantly from promises of "peace, stability, and growth". Ultimately, even "reforming and democratizing" aid efforts could not disguise the subordinating effects of market and political alignment, and thus were not sufficient to elicit a new "common sense."

The air transportation system in the United States is in a state of constant change and adaptation. Greatly affected by rapid changes in the industry are the large commercial airports that handle the greater proportion of passenger traffic. To increase capacity, maintain adequate levels of safety and security, and provide increased convenience and comfort to passengers, these airports need to invest heavily in capital programs, whose prices continue to escalate rapidly. The funding of capital programs for airports in the United States is closely associated with their operating revenue structures. Therefore, this thesis develops a framework for understanding these operating revenue structures. The high concentration of the air traffic in the United States suggests that a large portion of investment in airport infrastructure will be destined to few large facilities. Hence the primary area of concern of this study is the largest commercial airports in the United States Part I examines the financial data of the airports at the aggregate level to create a consolidated financial profile of these facilities. The consolidated operating revenue is analyzed to identify the most important line items. Special consideration is given to the alternative cost recovery methodologies - residual, compensatory and hybrid - used by airport operators to set their aeronautical fees. The objective of this exercise is to identify the main drivers and factors that shape the revenue structure of large commercial airports. In addition, by synthesizing scattered operational and financial data, the research highlights the impact of airport operations and business practices on the airports' revenues. Part Il contains the case studies of three airports. Each case is evaluated within the basic framework used to analyze the system at an aggregate level in Part 1. However, the evaluation of the case studies also emphasizes the unique characteristics of each case. The case studies include Logan International Airport in Boston (BOS), Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), and Baltimore/Washington International Airport (BWI).

Streszczenie:
Previous studies in child language socialization have adopted the approach of studying how children become competent members of their social groups through the use of language. This study began as an attempt to study child language socialization within selected Tucson U.S. Mexican households within this prevailing paradigm. During the course of fieldwork, it was found that the complexities of Borderlands structural and hegemonic relationships could not be adequately addressed within a theoretical assumption of homeostatic and monosemic communities. The ambiguities of "Mexican-ness" do not provide a consensually agreed upon or collectively implicit framework for language socialization. Instead, fluid domains are contested and negotiated as language socialization is construed as a constitutive process of "selfhood" for the child. Rather than replicating and reproducing previously transmitted information, certain parents and caregivers were found to actively engage in constructing an ethos for their own childhood experiences. Multivocality within multiple interactive spheres was identified as parents and caregivers often alternated between symbolic resistance and opposition, and accomodation. Additionally, an affective base for language socialization is postulated. An "emotion of minority status" that is structurally constituted and embedded within regional hegemonic relations is presented as a formative backdrop for children in this population. The essential methodology involved lengthy ethnographic observations coupled with audiocassette recordings of naturally occurring speech. Caregivers were supplied with tape recorders and cassettes and were asked to record interaction within the households, specifically at mealtime, bed time and homework sessions. In-depth open-ended interviews were taped with parents, and in some cases, grandparents, regarding their own perceptions of child-rearing, language habits, and value orientations. Extensive household histories, detailing residential, labor and family history, were also collected.

This paper explores the meaning of condoms for six sexually active, college-educated women. Analysis of ethnographic interviews addresses four facets of their experiences with condoms. This report discusses (1) the condom in relation to the (female) body, and (2) condom use as a conjunction of doing sex and gender identity. Informant-generated topics are (3) the learning and sharing of condom knowledge, and (4) the mention of condoms in life stories. To contextualize these highly individual experiences, the author initially presents popular and historical meanings of condoms. After a brief review of condoms in historical discourses of birth control and sexually-transmitted diseases, condom meanings in current AIDS-inspired research are presented. The conclusion suggests how this qualitative data could inform sexual health education and condom promotion campaigns.

This project focuses on the Incident Management System (IMS) and how it was used to manage the Oklahoma City, World Trade Center, and Lafayette, IN terrorism incidents. The Incident Management System is used by emergency response agencies to manage the scene of a disaster and consists of eight management components which are: Modular Organization, Integrated Communications, Common Terminology, Unified Command Structure, Consolidated Action Plans, Manageable Span of Control, Designated Incident Facilities, and Comprehensive Resource Management. Through journal articles and interviews, this project assesses observations that occurred during the response phase of each terrorism incident. These observations are then categorized under each of the IMS components to determine whether unique, or more complex procedures occurred with terrorism, as compared to other types of emergency disasters. This study further explores why the IMS is important to communities, and why a community's comprehensive plan should include goals and risk management studies that affect a community's ability to effectively respond to a terrorism incident.

The primary purpose of the study was to determine if a parenting program would affect the reading achievement scores of single-parent children. Secondary purposes were to determine if male and female students were affected differently and if middle school students were affected differently than elementary students.Ninety-three students from a rural school district in northern Shelby County, Indiana, were identified to participate in the program. Forty-seven experimental children, were instructed in the parenting program twenty-one weeks, twenty-five minutes, two times a week. Forty-seven control students remained in the classroom.Multivariate analysis of covariance was done to test the null hypotheses. The criterion for rejecting or retaining the null hypothesis was set at the .05 level of probability.Data collected from the pre- and post-test reading scores of the Comprehensive Test of Basic Skills, the Piers-Harris Self-Concept Scale, the Martinek-Zaichkowsky Self-Conce t Scale for Children, and the Behavioral Characteristics of Single-Parent Children Checklist were analyzed. Findings were:1. There was not a significant difference between experimental and control groups or gender;however, the following differences did exist:a. The experimental group scored higher in reading than the control group, with the exception of the lower grade control females, who scored higher than the experimental lower grade females.b. The females of both groups had higher gain scores than the males.2. There was a significant difference at the .05 level in reading for the variable grade with lower grade students making larger positive gains than the upper grade students.3. There were significant differences in self-concept between the control and experimental groups in the area of anxiety, school status, happiness and athletics.a. The lower grade experimental, upper grade control, and male students (of both groups) were less anxious.b. The lower grade students felt better about school and were happier than the upper grade students.c. The second grade control group felt more confident about ability in athletics than the experimental group.4. The teachers perceived the experimental students as needing less discipline, having higher general achievement and better reading comprehension. Conclusions based on the findings were: 1. The group or the gender did not make a significant difference:a. However, the upper grade experimental group did perform better than the upper grade control group.b. The lower control females performed better than the lower grade experimental females, but the lower grade experimental males out performed the lower grade males in comprehension.2. The lower grade students performed significantly better than the upper grade students in reading vocabulary and comprehension.3. The lower grade experimental students, the upper grade control students and the male students were significantly less anxious.4. The lower grade students felt significantly better about school than the upper grade students.5. Teachers perceptions of experimental students were higher in classroom behavior, general achievement, and reading comprehension.

There is a lack of research regarding nutrition knowledge, behaviors, and perceptions among Jews in the United States. This knowledge gap may contribute to nutritional or other health-related problems in this cohort. The purpose of this study was to investigate knowledge, behavior, and perceptions of nutrition among Jewish men and women in the United States using a mixed methods approach. Quantitative analysis demonstrated relationships between nutrition knowledge and religious affiliation (Orthodox, Conservative, and Reform), average frequency intake of protein by religious affiliation, and average frequency intake of protein by kosher status. Qualitative interview themes revealed the cultural and ritual aspects of Judaism influence on food choices and behaviors, the multitude of factors that influence food choice such as peer pressure, preconceived notions of food, and the healthiness of food, and further enlightened how the media negatively portrays body image for both Jewish men and women.

This dissertation consists of three essays that empirically address aspects of three common questions posed in the Mexican immigration literature: What characteristics define migrants from Mexico? How does US border-enforcement policy affect migrant behavior? What role does foreign direct investment (FDI) into Mexico play in altering incentives for migration to the United States? The first essay (Chapter II) examines selection patterns of Mexican migrants based on migration frequency. Studies of Mexican migrant selection have largely ignored its temporary and repeated nature. In particular, the literature has not appropriately distinguished between migrants that travel to the United States only once and those who migrate multiple times. I model the selection process of repeat migrants in two stages: selection into initial migration and selection into repeat migration. Allowing for unobservable differences between non-migrants, single-episode migrants and repeat migrants, I find negative selection of repeat migrants relative to non-migrants and no significant differences between the unobservable attributes of repeat and single-episode migrants. The second essay (Chapter III) addresses how border enforcement influences migrant behavior. Increases in border enforcement during the 1990s were distributed non-uniformly along the border, targeting regions believed to experience episodes of high volumes of illegal border crossings. I examine how geographic and time-series variation in annual border enforcement influences US destination choices for undocumented Mexican migrants. While increased enforcement diverts migrants to alternative crossing locations, I show that their final destinations tend to be robust to border enforcement. Thus, in terms of policy, there may be benefits to coordination in enforcement efforts across sectors. The third essay (Chapter IV) addresses the claim that Mexico-bound FDI reduces immigration to the United States by increasing employment opportunities and raising Mexican wages. I use annual, state-level FDI from 1994 to 2004 to examine how FDI flows influence US-migration propensity. FDI flows reduce the probability of migration to the United States and increase the probability of an employment change in Mexico for non-migrants. Further, FDI is found to increase the likelihood of employment changes for household heads in Mexican states bordering the United States, but not the likelihood of employment in interior states.

In number of formerly industrial urban centers in the Midwest, networks of private and public stakeholders are working to cultivate clusters of water-related technology innovation. Advocates of these cluster-based strategies strive to increase local and regional competitiveness by building links among relevant companies and local institutions, while also upgrading the conditions of the business environment that raise productivity and innovation. This study examines the trajectory of two water technology cluster initiatives from their initiation in the mid-to-late 2000s to the present: The Water Council, based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Confluence, based in Cincinnati, Ohio. Despite the central importance of geographic concentration and infrastructure inputs to the economic rationale behind clustering, processes of spatial planning and urban development have generally received limited attention in the study of cluster programs. In these two cases, I trace how abstract visions of cluster dynamics were translated into interventions through the planning and regulatory mechanisms-and their associated politics-governing the built environment in each location. Using interviews and qualitative analysis of planning and administrative documents, I find that each cluster development program evolved in relation to the land and infrastructure assets accessible to key institutional partners. In Milwaukee, the process of identifying cluster priorities among levels of state and regional institutions produced a regionally driven initiative closely tied to redevelopment powers at the level of the City of Milwaukee. The result was that the cluster program developed toward an eco-industrial park and innovation district model that supported quality of life and attraction goals for both city and industry leaders. In Cincinnati, water innovation efforts were not translated into land redevelopment planning yet ultimately found a niche in the needs of regional utilities. The resulting strategy and set of spatial interventions evolved toward a network of test beds and sites along water bodies impacted by contamination, a geography corresponding to the assets of regional utilities and environmental resource management entities.

The purpose of the study was to give a description of the curricula and methods used in the home schools of home educators and to evaluate by means of case studies the effects of home education upon those included in the study.Chapter I presented an overview of the background and significance for the study and five research questions which were addressed by the study. The questions were:1. Will students being educated in the home be able to obtain academic achievement at comparable levels with those students being educated in the public school? 2. Will students being educated in the home be able to show at least one years' gain in academic achievement when scores of the previous year are compared with scores from the current year?3. What curricula and methods are being used in the home education of the children included in the study?4. What attitudes and values motivated the parents in the study to home educate their children?5. What legal actions, if any, did the parents included in the study face as a result of their choice to home educate?Chapter II provided a review of related literature. Reviewed were: compulsory attendance laws, related court decisions, and research related to home education.Chapter III presented the plan of organization and procedures used in gathering, reporting, and summarizing the data.Chapter IV contained the data collected from the four home educators. The data were presented in narrative form and in tables for each family case study.Chapter V presented a summary of the case studies, answers to research questions, observations, and recommendations. The data provided the following answers to the five research questions:1. Forty percent of the home educated students scored equal to the median national score.2. Students showed inconsistencies in average gains for the year.3. Three of the four families used curriculum materials commercially prepared for home educators.4. The parent educators appeared motivated by socialization concerns and desires for values training.5. Legal action was taken against one of the four families in the study.

Mentorship in the workplace is a critical component of leader development that benefits both the individual and organization. While the United States Army’s mentorship program takes an informal approach to initiating mentoring connections, active mentorship is an expectation of all leaders. Women in the army remain underrepresented in the senior ranks, creating a situation that may lead to more limited opportunities for the female-to-female interactions that would result in a diverse mentoring experience. This qualitative case study explored the mentoring experiences of a purposive sample of interviews with 10 women officers assigned to Brigade Combat Teams while stationed at Fort Hood, Texas. Results were analyzed using two cycles of inductive coding and pattern-matching techniques. The six themes that emerged provide insight into the conditions and mechanisms that may create more effective professional mentoring relationships for military leaders.

South Asian same-sex attracted women in the United States experience discrimination and marginalization that puts them at an increased risk for mental health issues. Research shows their rates of counseling and psychotherapy use are low due to perceptions of stigma, lack of knowledge, and concerns about culturally insensitive treatment plans. Mental health providers lack the literature needed to inform culturally sensitive treatment plans to address these concerning gaps in services, and an extensive literature review found no studies on the lived experiences of this population. Guided by feminist theory, this research study examined how discrimination, oppression, and marginalization mold women’s lived experiences; this knowledge aims to serve as a means to advocate for social and political change for this population. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to understand the lived experiences of this population. An emergent hand coding analysis, using experiential anecdotes, of data collected from interviews of 10 participants generated 10 major themes and 25 subthemes of experiences. Themes included importance of cultural values; familial relationships; marital life plan; intersectionality; and discrimination from gender disparity, patriarchal hierarchy, and sexual modesty. The study contributes to social change initiatives by providing culturally and contextually practical information to mental health professionals, counselor educators, and educational institutions that provide services to this population.

Expatriation from Japanese companies has been considered mainly for men. This research focuses on gradually increasing Japanese expatriate women’s experiences in the United States. Using structuration theory (Giddens, 1984) and doing gender (West & Zimmerman, 1987), gender practices and (re)production of gendered structure at Japanese organizations in the United States are illustrated. It is exploratory research without prior research focusing on the subjects. Literature review, therefore, covers three relevant areas: women in workplace in Japan, Japanese expatriates in the United States, and women in international assignments from western countries. This research employs qualitative research method to understand the social world of Japanese expatriate women in the United States. Twenty participants are gathered through convenience and snowballing sample techniques. Findings are in two areas: private and organizational spheres. Gender plays a significant role in both areas. Organizations are officially gender free, but it is time to face that women are disadvantaged because of their gender. Particularly, most of participants reproduce gendered practice that expatriation is for men or women who can work like men. Therefore, an expatriate woman with a child and another with trailing husband in the United States face challenges. Japanese companies should acknowledge that organizational system do not reflect women’s perspectives at expatriatism. Japanese expatriate women should also take an active role in networking and mentoring for greater participation of women in international assignments in the future.

The following essays are two explorations of the role of culture in colonial Hawai‘i and in the American metropole in racializing and dominating Native Hawaiians in terms of a larger history of race-based oppression and romanticization in the US. The first essay draws from Werner Sollors’ Ethnic Modernism, in which he argues that the aesthetic movement of modernism, which has been historically white-washed by scholars, had strong ties to the influx of immigrants and the growing popularity of jazz music and other forms of African American cultural expression in the early twentieth century. The second essay, written for “Politics of Representation” with Professors Danielle Moretti-Langholtz and Jennifer Khan, reflects on the utility of a Museum Studies framework for analyzing U.S. American representations of Pacific Islanders in public displays and in mass culture. I argue that existing analyses of American World’s Fairs and mass print culture typically overlook their pedagogical functions, and that the museum studies framework might offer a more nuanced view of the cultural work done by these technologies of representation to reinforce or even transform how Americans thought about racialized peoples.

This study utilizes data from a national-level survey conducted by the Aspen Institute to examine the strategy of microenterprise assistance and microcredit provision in the United States. Four program groups are analyzed: training programs that do not offer loans, lending programs that serve primarily low income individuals, lending programs that serve primarily minorities, and lending programs that report unusually large average loan sizes. Within each of these groups, this study identifies significant subgroups that are making specific contributions to the strategy or employing it in unusual ways. The data confirm a diversification of the field that provides strong evidence against data aggregation and universal performance measures for microenterprise programs. The study concludes that there is a place for microenterprise programs in economic and community development in the US, but that the strategy may have a different role to play than originally anticipated. Policy implications and avenues for future micro- and macro-level research are discussed.

Improved energy efficiency in rental housing is important from the perspectives of environmental, economic, and social policy, but upgrades to such buildings lag those of owner-occupied properties. With myriad reasons to improve the efficiency of this sector, this thesis seeks to better understand the barriers and strategies to achieve this goal. This research was inspired by recent partnerships among municipalities, community-based organizations, and utilities in Massachusetts, which create a new medium to serve the rental sector. Upon investigation of the policies of five jurisdictions throughout the United States, this thesis finds that well designed policies may 1) establish a minimum standard of energy efficiency in rental properties, 2) enable energy efficiency program administrators to focus attention beyond basic measures to deeper retrofits, and 3) facilitate the valuation of energy efficiency in housing markets. Additionally, this research presents a cross-cutting analysis of policy options, highlights key elements, and offers suggestions to complement existing efforts in Massachusetts, such as these partnerships, to improve the energy efficiency of rental properties.

Streszczenie:
To better understand the ground motion and associated seismic hazard of earthquakes in the central and eastern United States (CEUS), this dissertation focuses on the source parameters and wave propagation characteristics of both tectonic earthquakes and induced earthquakes in the CEUS. The infrequent occurrence of significant earthquakes in the CEUS limits the necessary observations needed to understand earthquake processes and to reduce uncertainty in seismic-hazard maps. The well-recored aftershock sequence of the 2011 Mineral, Virginia, earthquake offers a rare opportunity to improve our understanding of earthquake processes and earthquake hazard in this populous region of the United States. Moreover, the rapid increase of seismicity in the CEUS since 2009 that has been linked to wastewater injection has raised concern regarding the potential hazard. In this dissertation, I first present a detailed study of the aftershock sequence of the 2011 Mw 5.7 Mineral, Virginia earthquake. It involves the hypocenter locations of ~3000 earthquakes, ~400 focal mechanism solutions, statistics of the aftershock sequence, and the Coulomb stress modeling that explains the triggering mechnanism of those aftershocks. Second, I examine the S-wave attenuation at critical short hypocentral distances (< 60 km) using the aftershock data. The observed S-wave amplitudes decay as a function of hypocenter distance R according to R^-1.3 - R^-1.5, which is substantially steeper than R^-1 for a homogeneous whole space. Finally, I propose and apply a stable multi-window coda spectral ratio method to estimate corner frequencies and Brune-type stress drops for the 2011 Mineral, Virginia mainshock and aftershocks, as well as induced earthquakes in Oklahoma. The goal of this comparative study is to find out whether or not there are systematical differences in source parameters between tectonic earthquakes and induced earthquakes in the CEUS. I found generally much higher stress drops for the Mineral, Virginia sequence. However, the stress drops for those induced earthquakes in Oklahoma exhibit large varation among individual earthquake sequences, with the large mainshocks having high stress drops (20-30 MPa, Brune-type) except for the 2011 Mw 5.6 Prague, Oklahoma earthquake. And spatially varying stress drops indicates strong fault heterogeneity, which in the case of induced earthquakes may be influenced by the injection of fluids into the subsurface.

Streszczenie:
Fifteen curbside recycling programs in the United States, from communities representing a variety of economic, geographic and political situations, were reviewed in this study. Case studies were analyzed and discussed with respect to four areas of interest to program planners: administration, operations, promotion and evaluation. No objective rating of the programs was attempted, but approaches were reviewed with respect to their ability to satisfy the goals of the programs. Comparisons of participation rates, waste diversion rates, and costs were used cautiously because of the inconsistencies in how the data were developed from program to program. Administrative approaches found in the case studies included: (a) complete ownership of the collection and processing system by municipalities; (b) contracted service by private waste management firms; (c) contracted or subsidized service by non-profit organizations; and (d) combinations of municipal, private, and non-profit services. Operational systems were examined with respect to the effectiveness of the service in stimulating participation, given the practical, political, and budgetary constraints. Variables of operation are closely related and include: (a) which materials are collected; (b) the degree of materials separation required; (c) the type of collection vehicle(s) used; (d) collection frequency and coincidence with garbage collection; (e) the provision of in home containers; and (t) the extent of post-collection materials processing. Four categories of promotional techniques used in curbside recycling programs were discussed: (a) publicity and education; (b) personal contact; (c) economic incentives; and (d) ordinances mandating source-separation. The impacts of these techniques on participation in the case study programs were discussed. Techniques for evaluating the efficacy of curbside recycling programs were also discussed. Participation rates, waste diversion rates, and cost were reviewed with respect to current usage and recommendations were made for increasing their usefulness as indicators of the success of programs or program elements.
