Describing library collections by location is nothing new. In the mid-nineteenth century, Luther Farnham published A Glance at Private Libraries, about libraries in the Boston area of the United States. Reginald Arthur Rye produced his highly praised Students’ Guide to the Libraries of London in England just over fifty years later. That we, no less than our forebears, value such discovery tools collocating collections is evident from their continued publication, whether in print or, more recently, electronic form. National, annual library directories still produced include The American Library Directory. In Britain, the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP)’s Libraries and Information Services in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland, a list of libraries by sector with contact details, remains available.

Background: Care costs rise towards the end of life. International comparison of service use, costs and care experiences can inform quality and improve access. Aim: The aim of this study was to compare health and social care costs, quality and their drivers in the last 3 months of life for older adults across countries. Null hypothesis: no difference between countries. Design: Mortality follow-back survey. Costs were calculated from carers’ reported service use and unit costs. Setting: Palliative care services in England (London), Ireland (Dublin) and the United States (New York, San Francisco). Participants: Informal carers of decedents who had received palliative care participated in the study. Results: A total of 767 questionnaires were returned: 245 in England, 282 in Ireland and 240 in the United States. Mean care costs per person with cancer/non-cancer were US$37,250/US$37,376 (the United States), US$29,065/US$29,411 (Ireland), US$15,347/US$16,631 (England) and differed significantly ( F = 25.79/14.27, p < 0.000). Cost distributions differed and were most homogeneous in England. In all countries, hospital care accounted for > 80% of total care costs; community care 6%–16%, palliative care 1%–15%; 10% of decedents used ~30% of total care costs. Being a high-cost user was associated with older age (>80 years), facing financial difficulties and poor experiences of home care, but not with having cancer or multimorbidity. Palliative care services consistently had the highest satisfaction. Conclusion: Poverty and poor home care drove high costs, suggesting that improving community palliative care may improve care value, especially as palliative care expenditure was low. Major diagnostic variables were not cost drivers. Care costs in the United States were high and highly variable, suggesting that high-cost low-value care may be prevalent.

This article traces the development and expansion of early computer systems for analyzing views at three state-owned agencies in the United States and Great Britain: the US Forest Service, the Central Electricity Generating Board of England and Wales, and the Greater London Authority. Following the technology over four decades, from 1968 to 2012, the article traces assumptions incorporated into initial programs and propagated through to the present. These programs were designed to address questions about visual environments and proximities by numerical calculations alone, without the need for field observations. Each historical episode provides unique insights into the role of abstraction and calculation in the production of landscapes and the built environment, and shows how computer-generated view data became an important currency in planning control, not primarily for aesthetic but for financial and political reasons.

ABSTRACT The main purpose of this research is to explore potential environmental impacts of a worst case discharge (WCD) from an offshore commercial wind farm electric service platform (ESP) in the Northeast United States. Wind farms in the continental United States are a growing industry as an energy alternative to traditional oil, coal, and natural gas energy sources. While many offshore wind farms already exist in Europe and around the world, the Cape Wind Project in New England received the first federally approved lease for an offshore wind energy production facility in the United States. While offshore wind energy is a green source of energy, wind driven energy has its own set of environmental risks, including the risks of an oil spill. A systematic review of scholarly journals, federal government websites and other academic resources was conducted to identify previous spills in the Northeast with the closest match in volume and location to the Cape Wind Project. The oil spills from the barge North Cape in 1996 near Point Judith, Rhode Island and from the barge Florida in Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts, in 1996, had the most similarities to a potential WCD spill from the Cape Wind Project. Both of these spills adversely impacted the environment, and provide useful information that can be used for the planning efforts surrounding a WCD event from the Cape Wind Project.

No-show is a thorny issue within the social scope. It not only affects the sustainability of service system operation but also causes heavy irretrievable losses. To maintain and develop the sustainability of service, this paper adopts bibliometric technology to reflect the current status and future prospects about no-show research. And we strive to explore and summarize appointment scheduling methods for no-show problems. The bibliometric analysis was carried out from various aspects including research areas, countries/regions, institutions, journals, authors and author keywords based on papers harvested from Web of Science Core Collection database. The total 1197 papers show that the United States is in a leading position in this field, followed by England and Canada. University of London is the most productive institution with the highest total citations and H-Index. BMC Health Services Research ranks first as the most productive journal, followed by European Journal of Operational Research and Production and Operations Management. Through the analysis of hot articles, we can conclude that how to reduce the impact of no-shows on the sustainability of service systems has become the main research direction. In addition to appointment scheduling, other effective methods are also mentioned. Further study on these methods will be a major research direction in the future.

The pear, Pyrus L., originated in prehistoric times. Records of its cultivation date back 3000 years both in Europe, with the ancient Romans and Greeks, and in Asia, with the Chinese. Pear culture was significant in France and England by the 16th century. The European golden age of pear improvement occurred from the 17th through the 19th centuries. The pear genetic resource collection for the United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, National Plant Germplasm System is maintained at Corvallis, Ore. This collection preserves more than 2000 diverse pear accessions, represents 26 species, and includes more than 410 heirloom cultivars. At least 10 of the cultivars have obscure origins from the ancient Roman, Greek, or Chinese cultures. Another dozen are at least 400 years old, and more than 250 were introduced during the European golden age. Another 120 “antique” cultivars of the collection were introduced during the first half of the 1900s. The “big four” economically important Pyrus communis L. cultivars in the United States, `Bartlett', which originated in 1777; `Anjou', late 1700s; `Bosc', 1807; and `Comice', 1845; are also represented. Origin and background information for these heirloom clones is web accessible through the Germplasm Resource Information Network (GRIN) database. Although many ancient pear genotypes have been lost, the Repository staff continues to search for significant heirloom cultivars that are not yet represented. Besides having direct value in crop improvement, these plants are a significant part of our human heritage. Their preservation is a sacred trust.

ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of the variables on the level of trust, the level of service quality, the level of religiosity, and the level of corporate image on customer loyalty in Bank Syariah Indonesia (BSI), a new bank resulting from the merger of three state-owned banks, namely BRI Syariah, BNI Syariah, and Mandiri Syariah. The study uses quantitative approaches with causality description techniques. The analysis technique used is Partial Least Square-Structural Equation Modeling (SEM-PLS) with a sample of 405 BSI customers. The results showed that the level of trust and religiosity had a positive effect on post-merger BSI customer loyalty. In addition, the level of service quality has no effect on customer loyalty after the merger. Meanwhile, the level of the corporate image did not moderate the effect of the level of trust, service quality, and religiosity on BSI customer loyalty after the merger. However, as a predictor, the level of the corporate image has a direct effect on post-merger BSI customer loyalty. The findings show that trust, religiosity, and corporate image play a very important role in growing BSI's customer loyalty. Therefore, BSI should consider developing a strategy to increase customer loyalty. Keywords: Customer Loyalty, Trust, Service Quality, Religiosity, Corporate Image ABSTRAK: Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisis pengaruh variabel tingkat kepercayaan, tingkat kualitas layanan, tingkat religiusitas, dan tingkat citra perusahaan terhadap loyalitas nasabah Bank Syariah Indonesia (BSI), bank baru hasil merger dari tiga bank BUMN, yaitu BRI Syariah, BNI Syariah, dan Mandiri Syariah. Penelitian ini menggunakan metodependekatan kuantitatif dengan teknik deskripsi kausalitas. Teknik analisis yang digunakan adalah Partial Least Square-Structural Equation Modeling (SEM-PLS) dengan sampel sebanyak 405 nasabah BSI. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa tingkat kepercayaan dan tingkat religiusitas berpengaruh positif terhadap loyalitas nasabah BSI pasca merger. Selain itu, tingkat kualitas layanan tidak berpengaruh terhadap loyalitas pelanggan setelah merger. Sedangkan tingkat citra perusahaan tidak memoderasi pengaruh tingkat kepercayaan, tingkat kualitas layanan, dan tingkat religiusitas terhadap loyalitas nasabah BSI setelah merger. Namun sebagai prediktor, tingkat citra perusahaan berpengaruh langsung terhadap loyalitas nasabah BSI pasca merger. Temuan menunjukkan bahwa kepercayaan, religiusitas, dan citra perusahaan memainkan peran yang sangat penting dalam menumbuhkan loyalitas pelanggan BSI . Oleh karena itu, BSI dapat mempertimbangkan aspek-aspek tersebut untuk menyusun strategi meningkatkan loyalitas nasabahnya. AbstractThe development of databases to track the outcomes of children with cardiovascular disease has been ongoing for much of the last two decades, paralleled by the rise of databases in the intensive care unit. While the breadth of data available in national, regional and local databases has grown exponentially, the ability to identify meaningful measurements of outcomes for patients with cardiovascular disease is still in its early stages.In the United States of America, the Virtual Pediatric Intensive Care Unit Performance System (VPS) is a clinically based database system for the paediatric intensive care unit that provides standardized high quality, comparative data to its participants [https://portal.myvps.org/]. All participants collect information on multiple parameters: (1) patients and their stay in the hospital, (2) diagnoses, (3) interventions, (4) discharge, (5) various measures of outcome, (6) organ donation, and (7) paediatric severity of illness scores. Because of the standards of quality within the database, through customizable interfaces, the database can also be used for several applications: (1) administrative purposes, such as assessing the utilization of resources and strategic planning, (2) multi-institutional research studies, and (3) additional internal projects of quality improvement or research.In the United Kingdom, The Paediatric Intensive Care Audit Network is a database established in 2002 to record details of the treatment of all critically ill children in paediatric intensive care units of the National Health Service in England, Wales and Scotland. The Paediatric Intensive Care Audit Network was designed to develop and maintain a secure and confidential high quality clinical database of pediatric intensive care activity in order to meet the following objectives: (1) identify best clinical practice, (2) monitor supply and demand, (3) monitor and review outcomes of treatment episodes, (4) facilitate strategic healthcare planning, (5) quantify resource requirements, and (6) study the epidemiology of critical illness in children.Two distinct physiologic risk adjustment methodologies are the Pediatric Risk of Mortality Scoring System (PRISM), and the Paediatric Index of Mortality Scoring System 2 (PIM 2). Both Pediatric Risk of Mortality (PRISM 2) and Pediatric Risk of Mortality (PRISM 3) are comprised of clinical variables that include physiological and laboratory measurements that are weighted on a logistic scale. The raw Pediatric Risk of Mortality (PRISM) score provides quantitative measures of severity of illness. The Pediatric Risk of Mortality (PRISM) score when used in a logistic regression model provides a probability of the predicted risk of mortality. This predicted risk of mortality can then be used along with the rates of observed mortality to provide a quantitative measurement of the Standardized Mortality Ratio (SMR). Similar to the Pediatric Risk of Mortality (PRISM) scoring system, the Paediatric Index of Mortality (PIM) score is comprised of physiological and laboratory values and provides a quantitative measurement to estimate the probability of death using a logistic regression model.The primary use of national and international databases of patients with congenital cardiac disease should be to improve the quality of care for these patients. The utilization of common nomenclature and datasets by the various regional subspecialty databases will facilitate the eventual linking of these databases and the creation of a comprehensive database that spans conventional geographic and subspecialty boundaries.

Today, the increasing demand for health systems with the developing technology has made technology an indispensable part of the health sector. Mobile health applications are widely used in health services to support health outcomes, improve public health, promote a healthy life in society, and reduce chronic diseases. Many digital applications that have become widespread in the health sector both provide convenience for health professionals in the health management process and provide instant access to data for health service recipients. In this study, information is given about the most popular mobile health applications in Turkey and in the leading countries in the field of mobile health: England, the United States, Canada, Australia, Denmark, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Finland, France, and Germany. Comparisons of applications were made, and areas of mobile health applications that were lacking were emphasized.

This chapter moves between the United States and England to analyze the antislavery moving panoramas exhibited by three black men—James Presley Ball, William Wells Brown, and Henry Box Brown. Following the moving panoramas of slavery that they toured to exhibit the horrors of enslavement and fund antislavery campaigns, this chapter situates the medium of the moving panorama as another popular media form that black activists used to advance their cause. As the visual medium regained popularity in England and the United States for its landscape views, these black men centered the experiences of enslaved people in their repurposed panoramas for the thousands of men, women, and children who viewed them. The reception of these popular panoramas demonstrated the educational and inspirational components of these works. Each of these three moving panorama purveyors implemented different business strategies to attract attendees and convince them of the authenticity and veracity of their antislavery works. Like the African American producers of other visual media, they drew on an established network of activists as they toured towns and cities in the service of the abolitionist cause. Records from these African American exhibitors, advertisements, and attendees reveal the complex process of encouraging viewer expectations, fashioning visual experiences, and interpreting the displayed information. Activists knew that the freedom of millions was at stake.

Abstract This chapter focuses on the role played by Anglicans in shaping the culture of Remembrance in Great Britain, the Dominions, and the United States in the formative years after the First World War. In doing so, it highlights the defining role of the King James Bible and the 1662 Book of Common Prayer in the idiom of Remembrance, questioning assumptions as to its innately ‘secular’ quality. It also illustrates Anglican influence on the work of the Imperial War Graves Commission and how this was accompanied by the phenomenon of post-war Anglican ‘pilgrimage’ to the battlefields of 1914 to 1918. Besides considering the significance of the practical demands and iconography of Remembrance and memorialization, it also examines the political overtones of Anglican-sponsored Remembrance, especially its quest for social harmony and its affirmation of loyalty to the Empire. The chapter explores the inter-war multiplication of regimental chapels in the cathedrals and major churches of England and Wales, their place in the vaunted regimental system of the British Army, and their potency as symbols of Anglican identification with the service and sacrifice of local communities. The chapter concludes with a consideration of how these tendencies persisted after 1945, especially with the creation of the Battle of Britain Memorial Chapel in Westminster Abbey and in the imperatives which drove the transformation of St Clement Danes in London into the Central Church of the Royal Air Force in the 1950s.
